So on the consoles itself you shouldn't set them to Full (Xbox) or High (PS4) even if you have a 4K HDR set? Can't those sets display all those levels of brightness?

no, even HDR is still mastered at rgb limited black level, hell even dolby vision its no more that 4:2:2 chroma.

specially for HDR you should set your PS4 to RGB limited as the PS4(and Xbox) outputs HDR in YUV422 due to limitations of the HDMI 2.0 standart, and YUV always operate in Limited/low levels.

I'd wait. The LG Holographic sets in 2025 are going to be incredible.

People have to understand that oled display perfect blacks, the pixels are turned off complety, this in a well lit to bright room can be counterproductive.

the most offender to a OLED its any kind of reflection, its absurdly the amount of detail and brightness than reflexion kills in a oled panel, that why you have to raise the light to nearly max in order to make it a little decent.

I agree. If most of or tv viewing is in a brightly lit room, LCD is a no brainier. My living room is very bright, and bright most of the day, and the tv is on a lot. I wanted something bigger, so 75" Sony 850D fit the bill, it's bright, and can maintain that brightness. And during the day that tv looks fantastic, at night it's pretty terrible lol.

For my light controlled office / game room / man cave replacement (RIP projector w/100" screen man cave), OLED was a no brainier once I got past the burn in fear lol.

Dam I'm definitely inclined to get the new TCL 6 series for my second set up!

The 6 series is pretty damn great for what youre spending. I was very impressed with it's local dimming performance, wasn't expecting it to perform that well for a $600 tv.

Ha ha. Please don't do that to me. Nice avatar btw. I've been jonesing to play FF8 again after downloading the piano collection of iTunes. Probably the most hyped I will ever be for a game. It came out on my 13th birthday and I remember getting home from soccer practice and it was sitting right by the garage.

So on Netflix, movies or shows like Lost in Space that are Dolby Vision trigger the B7 into DV mode, but shows like Planet Earth 2 that are HDR do not trigger an HDR mode, why is that, is that not really HDR? Only asking because I set up a DV preset and it's nice that it is enabled automatically, and with Planet Earth 2 HDR I have to change the setting to Cinema manually every time.

TCL must be loving this exposure via WaPo. Samsung not so much.

https://youtu.be/O4Hufmj4TfY

If I wanted a lower end TV, I'd probably pick the TCL over the Samsung for price and being a FALD set, but I feel like that video is a bit misleading if you're doing more than just watch movies on the tv. Q6FN supports 120hz at 1080p and even 1440p. The set also has VRR which can be a nice addition so mentioning these would have been nice to further explain the price difference maybe.

Yep, first "serious" rpg I ever played. Easily the most memorable of my childhood . Everyone else's VII is my VIII cuz I was Lttp on FF. I still love it.

All HDR content on Netflix is Dolby Vision if your TV supports it. Planet Earth 2 isn't HDR at all, just 4K.

Fuck. I just saw the lg C8 at Costco. I will have that tv before last of us pt 2/ff7r come out.

The C8 is a fantastic TV! I WAS really enjoying it for almost a month...........until it refused to ever turn on again lol. Thank goodness for Costco. They have the best return policy out of any place I've ever shopped.

Got it from Costco.com bc they didn't have it instore yet, took it back to my local Costco customer service counter and a new C8 on the way! I barely touched the settings for calibration on it and it was ace! Looking forward to my NEXT one. X1X and PS4PRO looked fantastic on this set.

They have 2 yr Costco warranty included, then the extended 3 yr warranty is $100.......but they subtract $100 off your purchase price so 5 yr warranty LITERALLY free. Love BestBuy but they wanted $500 for 5 yr warranty

I honestly don't know but I'm guessing based on my 1st return and history with them that it wouldn't be a problem at all. They gave 0 sh1ts about me bringing in a $2200 TV, no questions no nothing. They just apologized and wanted to make sure I was happy. I've been a member since 2002 and hardly ever return anything there which I've heard matters also. How much stuff you buy compared to return.

Costco uses Square Trade and they do not cover burn-in.
If that's correct I think the first 2 years of the Costco warranty DOES before the 3 year square trade warranty kicks in. I honestly think if that DID happen, you could complain and they'd take care of it. Even though last 3 years through Square, still purchased from Costco.

Had a friend with a Trager Grill. Had it for over 6 years, it broke. Costco took it back and gave him full purchase price from 6 years ago lol.

Costco will only cover what the LG warranty covers and LG won't cover burn-in. I guess if something happens in the first 2 years you could try and get Costco to take care of it.

And it doesn't surprise me they took that grill back. On anything not electronic it's pretty much an unlimited return policy. TV's, though, only 90 days.

Hi, I'm having a problem with my TV's HDR and I don't know where to ask.
My TV is a Samsung HU8500 with the kit SEK3500 wich is HDR compatible.
When I set the HDR option ON, the image looks washed out and the characters from the interface's text looks like fragmented.
Here are some examples in Shadow of the Colossus:

So...the SEK3500 is a breakout box replacement kit for Samsung TVs, and it supposedly gives HDMI 2 + HDR? I can't find exact specs on it. Well, if you want HDR you need to make sure the cable going from your console to the box is HDMI 2.0 18Gbps ready. Beyond that this looks like it might be an RGB limited/full issue? Have you tried tweaking that?

Ok, I think I've got it. However, is it alright if I just have one HDMI coming out from my receiver into either HDMI 2 or 3? I will have the PS4P and XboneX plugged into the receiver. Also, I cannot for the life of me find a complete owner's manual for the Sony X900F. Their website just has a dinky little setup guide and a help document.

Yeah, sure, use HDMI 3 to your receiver as that will give you ARC and then connect your devices to the receiver, provided that receiver supports HDR and 18Gbps HDMI (HDMI 2.0a or b). The manual is really easy to find, but it's called "Reference Guide". Make sure both your receiver and the input port on the TV setting are both to "Enhanced HDMI" which is what you need for the full 18Gbps bandwidth.

Lastly, what are the issues I'm seeing with brightness between HDR and SDR? Let's say I'm playing Forza 7 that supports HDR and I have it at the max brightness which is beneficial for HDR, then I switch to a game without HDR, are you saying I have to manually go into the TV settings and change the brightness since it will be too bright for SDR? And by brightness are we talking about backlight intensity or actually black level (brightness setting)?

As mentioned the X900F saves HDR and non HDR per input separately. So you can tune SDR and HDR each. RTINGS suggests setting brightness based on your room lighting - more room lighting, more brightness.

People are talking about backlight. Pumping up the brightness setting to max on a TV would end with a horrible image.

Yeah Costco is great for buying TVs. I work in the hearing aid center and walked by on my break and sat there for 5 minutes staring at it. What games did you play on it and what was the most impressive?

Ok so I need to make sure both my receiver and TV have the enhanced HDMI setting turned on then the game systems and also my Apple TV 4K I'm guessing will automatically detect the right settings?
It's the term for Sony TVs, but I just checked and it looks like Denon uses the same name.

On the TV you'd go to: Settings -> External Inputs -> HDMI Signal Format
There you can switch it from Standard to Enhanced for any of the HDMI ports.

It looks like Denon receivers have this too, so yes it looks like you'd change to enhanced hdmi on there too:
http://manuals.denon.com/AVRS730H/NA/EN/RQIFSYsvvlcemq.php

Yup, after turning that on, when you run the detection in the video options the device should be able to tell properly what your TV is capable of and therefore enable all of the options, then you may have to choose the best option from those settings.
For example, for the Pro that should enable you to be able to choose 2160p RGB from the list, which may have been grayed out before.

Edit: I saw you got another msg earlier from someone so you may have already done this. :)

...are you sure this is correct? I'm not seeing any downsides to setting my TV to HDMI 2.0a (manual setting) and PS4/Xbox to full range RGB. With 10-bit specified on Xbox. Detail is great, no crush.

So I've already been a big proponent of HDR and DV, but I kind of felt like DV was a bit dim since HDR is so in your face.

However tonight watching A Quiet Place on Vudu in 4k with DV, I finally get it. The darks are supposed to be really dark and everything else almost like an accent

So is the 05.30.25 firmware update for the B6 OLED confirmed to be the one which has the "fix" for HDR Game Brightness, and I believe the Dolby Vision elevated blacks issue? It's listed on their site, but the notes say "Fix that volume is changed to be zero by Peel Remote App during watching TV".

Why the hell do Sony TVs have only 2 full bandwidth HDMI inputs when pretty much none of the other manufacturers are like this? What the hell is with that? It's ridiculous

Dolby Vision fix is there for sure. I'm reading reports that HDR Game is also slightly brighter.

Fucking Apple. Mission Impossible Collection is $50 regular price on iTunes. Tuesday they drop the price to $40 when the 4K versions hit so I buy it. Today, I wake up and it dropped again to $30. Of course, there's no price protection on this shit either.

I updated yesterday and it does look brighter. Why does the update note only mentions the volume fix and doesn't say anything about hdr ?

I'm just now seeing this. Holy crap this is dumb. They only give you 2 and 1 is the audio return channel. I guess having an HDMI switch is a must for Sony TVs.

I mean, I kinda get the "how many 4K devices are people really going to have?" idea behind it. I have 4, but I feel like I'm the exception, not the rule. Also, I think they probably make assumptions about the level of models that have some full bandwidth versus all; e.g. my Sony OLED customer will have more 4K devices than my Sony X750 customer etc.

That being said A) people are going to acquire more 4K devices, not less, so if you're planning to own the set for a long time, that's a bummer and B) I can't imagine there actually being a significant cost savings there? But I hardly know what the BOM is for the sets, so that's just a guess.

Regarding the Sony HDMI limitations:

It is my understanding that full bandwidth HDMI is only required for 4K gaming consoles. UHD Blue Ray player will work just fine with the other HDMI inputs.

As for one being the ARC channel, that sucks. But if you are using ARC you are likely using a sound bar or receiver that does HDMI switching.

I got this from one of the Q&A sections of a Rtings review for one of these TVs. I'll try to look it up and post the link here.

I still agree that it is an unnecessary limitation though.

I was of the impression that it is required for 4K HDR, not just from consoles. So if you have two HDR-capable consoles and a dedicated 4K HDR blu-ray player you will need a splitter. That stinks

Yeah, 12 bit color and 4:4:4 requires to much bandwidth. Although, I believe when mastered DV use ICtCp color model for streaming, Netflix, Vudu, and ITunes.
