Friend update: So he finished Life Is Strange aaaaaaaand he loved it! :D Picked the Bay ending, which I was surprised about, I was about 80% sure that he'd go for Bae.

But yeah, his response was "Fuck you, but also I'm gonna need more of this", so I'm definitely glad I recommended it to them. But mostly relieved, honestly.

I thought people here might find these to be good reads about The Awesome Adventures Of Captain Spirit.

The first is Holly Green's review at Paste

Which is linked in the other piece, from Patrick Klepek at Waypoint.

If I get to play as a minority character with super powers I'm just gonna telekentically throw footballs at that one girl from LiS1

Just to be completely honest about how I'm feeling, I think all the leaks make the game sound like trash and I highly doubt it'll be gay. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I don't care if LiS2 will be gay or not as long as the story and characters are good. If CS is an indication, well... I'm a little upset. I won't buy it on day one, i'll wait and see.

i was a bit more generous and reserved in how i put it in my post in the captain spirit OT but i'm with you tbh

Basically. I've been saying this since they announced the game but I strongly feel the decision to make LIS an anthology series (with the only connecting theme being "kids with superpowers set to indie music") is a grave mistake. Square Enix presumably thinks so too, which is why they went behind Dontnod's back to authorize another Arcadia Bay game because they know that's what people want.

I'm open to LIS2 being great and I'd love it if there were gay characters present, but I can't pretend I'm optimistic about either of those.
I've always supected the first game was a lightning-in-a-bottle case.

I'm not even against it being an anthology series - I am 100% down with them leaving Arcadia Bay. Between BtS and the comic, I think we'll have gotten all the story we need from those characters. I just think what made the first LiS (and Before the Storm, for that matter) special is not "indie folk music and dead parents and supernatural stuff and murder mysteries" (although, tbf, I am 100% down with the soundtrack choices), and I worry those are what's going to be the connecting tissue, when the actual thing I'm here for is "crying about the gay girls"

I just want more Chloe :(

I gotta admit, I'm not all that interested in playing as younger characters, so if that's the direction LiS2 is taking I will be a little disappointed. I was really hoping for characters in their 20s because I want the game to go even darker than LiS1. There's only so many places they can go with children characters.

As for future games, I was glad that BtS didn't fill in all the blanks between that and LiS1 and tell us everything, but now I really want a game that takes place between BtS and LiS1 where you play as Rachel and Chloe is the NPC again. Then we'll get to see the relationship for her eyes, and how she becomes the Rachel we read about in LiS1. That'll never happen though.

I feel like if they do a direct sequel to Life is Strange, it'd have to take Max out of the equation and focus more on Chloe. Max's arc feels pretty well closed, but Chloe's feels like there's still room for another story. The only problem is that it'd make half of the ending non-canon.

Also, as for the leaks
There's no way we're playing as little kids the whole game. It's absolutely going to feature a time jump

Are all these posts about non gay characters in LiS2 and everything just speculation or based on actual leaks? If it's the latter then that should definitely be in spoiler tags.

I finished Episode 5 a few days ago.

I don't think there's a "correct" answer. It's a knife to the heart either way.
I didn't really like the nightmare sequence either. I get that it's supposed to show you everything Max has been through and all but it just took me out of the game as well.

To me the game is about consequences. Throughout the game Max rewinds time with impunity, the storm is the consequences of messing around with time.

If you choose to go back in time and let Chloe die it just rings hollow to me. None of the events in the game actually happen and Max is the only one who will remember all the events and possibilities with Chloe.

To me the game is about their friendship. Max is willing to do anything to save Chloe in the game. That ending choice to me is the acceptance of the consequences.

As for what happens to them? There's an upcoming comic book that will cover that. I guess it's left up to the player's imagination.

BTS shines a new light on Chloe as well. I should replay Life is Strange again after experiencing the prequel.
Put more thoughts about the game during these two days. I definitely agree with what you said about consequences and friendships. There is seldom a perfect ending in this world, and sacrifices have to be made, whatever if the sacrifices are ourselves or others. Like Chloe and Max at the "sacrifice town" ending, they are sad but has to move on. While the choices are reasonable and suit to reality, the resulting endings are still disheartening to watch.

Overall it is an awesome story. I will play BTS LiS2 prequel (or demo?) later. Look forward to LiS 2.

Yup, its just fan theory! I think people are assuming Cassidy, which appears in the files as an AI buddy/"Chloe" alongside the younger brother and a dog, might be a possible love interest

The leaks about the story being about two young kid brothers make me think that the gayness will be in the side characters, and that the main characters' sexuality won't be heavily explored-unless the game timeskips to them being young adults, which I think is very possible.

But Life is Strange is not an IP about gays characters.
Again:
"Life is Strange is an entire universe of storytelling founded upon relatable characters facing real world issues, but always with "a twist of the strange" and we have many more stories we want to tell."

I don't see how you can have one and not the other. Especially after playing Farewell.

Even Rachel feels like a Max substitute for Chloe in the end.

I can't help but feel that DontNod caught lightning in a bottle with Max and Chloe. Not to doubt them but I can't help but wonder what the odds are they can do that again in LiS2. It's a tall order. Playing Captain Spirit I keep expecting to see Chloe jump out from behind a snowbank.

If LiS2 somehow doesn't do as well as it's predec you know where they're going in LiS3.

But Life is Strange is not an IP about gays characters.

Ultimately it's whatever resonates with fans the most.

Developers and publishers like S-E have sales expectations and targets.

Yeah if you're expecting a series where everything is "...and then they're gay", I think you've totally misunderstood what the game is about and what the series clearly will be.

What drew me to Life is Strange isn't that there were choices for the main characters to be gay, or even any focus on romance (Max didn't have much of that in my own playthrough). What they're doing with LiS2 as an anthology series is what I wanted the most, and what they're keeping seems to be the core of what made me enjoy LiS in the first place.

They moved the series to Beaver Creek because everyone's gay in Arcadia Bay (there should be music emojis here but I can't copy it over)

but utilmately you do not create a story for the fans. You create what you want.
It's the same with music.

You're absolutely correct but it's a business.

And there's been cases of bands going in a different musical direction only to alienate fans and go right back to what made them successful.

I'm not saying I agree with this but fans now have expectations and DontNod has to meet them.

Without looking at leaks/spoilers and just going on what's being said in here, I do trust in Dontnod but it would be a disappointment if there wasn't any sort of LGBT representation considering the first game and Before the Storm.

They moved the series to Beaver Creek because everyone's gay in Arcadia Bay (there should be music emojis here but I can't copy it over)
I mean, going from the name, I would've thought Beaver Creek was infinitely gayer.

You can always oversimplify something to its base elements like this, but it doesn't fully or accurately represent the themes LiS1 dealt with. The game also delved into things like bullying, mental health, suicide, drug use, euthanasia, past traumas, predatory behavior, etc., and on a more positive note: friendship, love, reconnecting after having grown apart, and a person doing ones part to help those around them. It's a game about "gay girls doing gay stuff" about as much as it's a game about Pompidou. Max and Chloe's relationship is a strong and complex character bond, so if they can convey that once more (regardless of orientation or relationship, it could be about two siblings if they wanna go that way), I will be there once more. I think the heart of LiS is strong characters and powerful themes, so when some of the more hardcore LiS fans are worried or thinking of skipping the game because it isn't gay, that's disconcerting to hear.

It's wonderful if Max and Chloe's tender moments resonated with y'all, but give LiS2's new protags a chance is all I'm saying. You may uncover elements of them that resonate with you on a different level than with the previous game's main characters.
Max's arc feels pretty well closed, but Chloe's feels like there's still room for another story.
Chloe's arc is well closed in the ending much of the fandom opts to reject. All Bae fans did is subtract from her agency and not let her make her own decision in the end, and artificially prolong her life. I don't think there's much of a story to be told beyond there, outside of fanservice.

I strongly disagree. In the end Chloe left the decision up to Max because she trusted her and the Bae ending is the most thematically interesting. Letting Chloe die is just cynical.

There's some good fanfiction that explores the implications and aftermath of the Bae ending and shows there is still plenty of thematic depth to be explored.

Here's something interesting. Someone is doing some research using Life is Strange to study peoples perceptions of gender/queer representation in the media. A thread got made about it with details and a link to follow to sign up to be interviewed about it:

https://www.resetera.com/threads/life-is-strange-research-project-gender-queer-representation.52094/

Thanks for posting this here.

Here's a direct link to the tweet for those that might be interested.

Chloe is actually a colleague of mine at Player Research but she's still finishing up her Gender & Media Studies MSc.

Some of the more interesting LiS 2 leak info. Some of this might have been posted in here already but I just wanted to compile it all:
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/lifeisstra...s_2_info_extracted_from_captain_spirit_files/

First of all, yes the neighbor boys at the end are definitely the main protagonists of LiS 2.Their names are Sean and Daniel, Sean being the older one.
https://imgur.com/a/BEQ0mnS

We likely play as Sean.
https://imgur.com/T8quMR3
https://imgur.com/NlFitay

It looks to involve the two of them running away and being on the road together.

Save importing from LiS and Captain Spirit is a thing. Can also take a questionnaire to fill in your choices if you don't have a save on the same platform.

My thoughts on the leaks above:

Some of this I'm interested in, some of it I don't think sounds that interesting. I'll wait to see how Dontnod presents it when they are ready to show it off, but it seems to be very different from the first game.

Also no, I'm not just disinterested because of the lack of LGBTQ themes in the leaks, I've seen people insinuating this in the thread and that is not why I'm not currently interested in it. I just think it sounds extremely different from the first game, like a totally new direction considering it's going to be a game about having telekinesis and being on the road with your little brother, and that's just not something that immediately interests me the way "high school student with time-rewind powers" did. I was much more into the chill small-town vibes of the first game, even when things started to get darker in the later episodes. This is going to presumably be out in the woods and visiting different locations and that's a totally different vibe than chilling in a small hometown. The power being telekinesis is not really that exciting to me because I don't see how that can be used as well as time-travel was narratively in the first game, but I'm no writer and we don't have a lot of context about the power yet so I'll wait to judge that fully until we learn more.

Honestly, if it weren't for the idea of them going to Arcadia Bay in a post-ending of our choice from the first game (which I just saw today), I really wouldn't be that in to the story setup from everything I've read in these leaks. I'm totally going to play the game still, I just am currently not very excited and have very low expectations for it compared to how I feel about the first game and how I thought I was going to feel about an LiS 2, even knowing that it was going to have new characters and a new setting.

So yeah, maybe I was a bit harsh when I said it "sounds like trash" last night, but it helped to get the point across about how I've been feeling about the leaks after reading them.

We might be playing as both. Their are files that indicate this, also their was an earlier leak the matches these information that says we are playing both. Also they seem to be going to Mexico.

It seems like that newspaper article about a man being killed by a cop is about the brother's father.

Anybody else got a little put off that Chris' Dad had the same voice-actor as Frank? Felt weird to me. Guess I played too much LiS.

I also always get confused when I hear a game protagonist voiced by Ashly.

I haven't read fanfiction for this, so I won't speak on that, but there ain't nothing cynical about embracing Chloe's selfless maturation, her ultimate acceptance to sacrifice herself to save her mom, David, Kate, Frank, and everyone else in Arcadia Bay. Her arc is beautiful that way.

If I had to guess:

Max and Chloe/Warren appear briefly in some sort of cameo as a final send-off from Dontnod -- remember that BTS was developed by Deck Nine, and Dontnod may want their own opportunity to say goodbye to their characters. It's probably something like Sean and Daniel are at a bus station buying a ticket and Max and Chloe are nearby buying a ticket to California or something. I'd be (very pleasantly) surprised if Max and Chloe actually play a major role in the game.

Yeah this is pretty much what I was thinking. At the very least it could be like an audio recording that we can find as an easter egg somewhere, but if I had to bet I'd say it's probably a short cameo scene.
