Ya know what's funny though. Google generates more revenue through the google play store (through the 30% cut they take from IAP) than Nintendo generates through games software.
And that's on store which piracy is not stopped, it's probably mind blowing how much Apple made on app store.

They're welcome to try, I just hope they don't buy out a bunch of good studios to make exclusives. That would be a shitty move.

I'll believe it when I see it. Just like Amazon was supposedly going to be a big player and pretty much hasn't done anything

Hmm.. i'm not sold on this. Most other big companies i'd be a bit more open to, but Google has a habit of starting up new projects then abandoning them. I'm not sure i'd trust them enough to invest long-term into gaming.

It's going to really suck if Amazon bought Double Helix just to trap them in development limbo.

They released some F2P game in 2014, then had Breakaway cancelled. This is what I would worry about if Google started nabbing studios :/

Pretty sad that Double Helix finally have a hit with KI get acquired and now they seem to be back to making shovelware

Reminds me of the early rumblings around Amazon Game Studios.

Alphabet/Google has a hard enough time keeping things alive that do well. I have zero faith that anything they do in this arena becomes a product that people can buy, whether a set-top box or a game.

Google has the resources to create such things.

My guess is anything they do will be based in Android, they'd have the UI infrastructure in place which links to your Google Profile across all their services. Having big youtube implementation to help promote the service with large creators.

They'd also probably leverage mobile dominance to entice big third party developers to their platform, assuming this is a streaming subscription service.

But this also raises lots of questions,

For Example, Controls, Google needs their own dedicated controller, but what would they do for phones? Will they have devs try implementing touch controls in AAA games or have a controller like attachments?

Then the original content and talent. Google will convince many big publishers to port their multi-plat games over. But will that be enough? Maybe, if the service is steps above the competition in usability. But assuming all services are on equal footing.

It will be the original content that sets these apart. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have a huge advantage here. Not only having big established franchises but also big talented studios all working under them.

This infrastructure didn't come cheap, and took many, many, many years building up trust and relationships with talented devs.

Google, Amazon, Apple will have to really open up their checkbooks here. They can all afford studios but it's the "talent", those senior level developers that are scarce and don't come cheap, and a lot of times value creative freedom. And most of that talent is already under established big umbrellas.

It's be interested to see how newcomers to this space address this issue. Will the board of these companies approve such a huge investment into an unproven endeavor?

Whatever the case, it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
This is a good damn post. I would add that I think that Google and Apple have the finances and assets to get into the gaming industry. I think they can hand out some cheques to gaming "talent" without even thinking about it.

I'm not sure about how Amazon is doing financially (compared to Apple and Google) but I'm sure it's still gangbusters. I think their branding would be better solely for the fact that they own Twitch, but I don't know how much that would matter in the grand scheme of things.

People blowing this off should be absolutely terrified at the prospect of a company with Google money getting into the studio acquisition business.

I eagerly anticipate the unveiling, the massive slew of thinkpieces about how Google is going to dominate this market and everybody else better buckle up, the thing releases to tepid actual reviews and even more lukewarm sales, and Google quietly abandoning it in 3-5 years.
3-5 years.... more like 2-3 :P. No doubt there could be a huge initial push and then as you say, it would completely fizzle out once Google gets bored. Now, I can see them trying to make Android TV/Google Home/whatever a better platform for games already in the Play Store.

i know it was said when MS jumped in, but "good luck with that". the big 3 are pretty homogenous, and you need a very specific kind of investment to make it

If they can make an Android box with beefy CPU/GPU (in line with current consoles) that'll be a hell of an emulator box.

I mean Google's been in the acquisition business for decades and none of their dozens of hardware projects has really lifted off.

The only wild card Yeti has is a dedicated global leader in the form of Phil Harrison.

But they need to build an entire internal culture that lives and breathes gaming, something that Amazon has spent years and hundreds of millions failing to do. I'm staying skeptical.

Yeah the company that can barely execute anything for shit is gonna do this. Hard to take it seriously. Will just be a side project that goes nowhere before they ditch it eventually.

Makes me wonder if rumblings of this prompted the MS CEO to invest more in gaming.

In any case, after seeing all of Amazon's efforts fizzle out, and given the history of Google trying and dropping so many things so quickly, I don't have a lot of hope that Google can make it in the gaming industry.

asking him where he thought the nascent PlayStation console's main competition would come from. Microsoft? Nintendo?

"No, Bernie, you are wrong," he said. "It is Google. And I will kill them."

I don't think people here understood the weight of a Google assault on the game industry.

Google can definitely upset the market and create a new player but it's how serious they are about it. Google has entered multiple new industries before, creating new products only to eventually back out when they didn't think it was worth their time any more. With Google, it's a wait and see approach to whether they are a serious player.

Whenever streaming becomes a thing I can see Google and Amazon getting into the gaming platform business. Until then it will be hard for them to attract developers to develop for their proprietary hardware.

I am terrified for the fate of developers letting themselves get acquired by a company who doesn't yet have a product in the market and has a reputation for shuttering/shuffling even successful products, but they made their own bed when they cashed in

User Warned: Platform-warring.
I'm in favor of anyone replacing Microsoft at this point. It can't get much worse than XB1 for me so I say go for it Google. If anyone is getting knocked out of the market, it will be the newcomer or MS.

Google recently updated the YouTube App on AppleTV to be nothing more than a website. It does not follow any UI conventions known to man, especially the ones set out by TVOS. I have no confidence in Googles ability beyond their back end processes.

Google could afford ridiculous specs at a low price to consumers and also pay big bucks to developers. If they are smart they could actually pull it off imo.

It's nice to see a new face trying to crack into the console business, but I for one am not interested in a google console. They can run every other aspect of my life, just leave my games alone.

Google "Welcome to the Google Games keynote. We are pleased to announce a set top box game streaming service....."

I can see them making a -mostly- third-party games console with a few exclusives, and a good streaming service. If anyone has the bandwidth, infrastructure, and expertise to deliver a good streaming service that is google. Streaming is going to be the future of this industry, at least in big cities.

Having not been checking message boards in the time Microsoft was coming into the fold, were people this pessimistic about them stepping into the console space at that time?

I don't see any reason Google can't eventually do what Microsoft has done. It'll be tough sledding, of course, but I guess time will tell.

Yep. I think it's too early to tell either way.

Streaming games. Buying tons of developers. Siphoning developers from other studios.

This is my nightmare. Google please stop.

I think quality exclusives would be enough to entice some people to at least give a Google console a shot.

I think it would take GTA or Elder Scrolls level acquisitions to entice enough people. No new IP can do it without a brand behind it. Even Halo had its PC release back in the day to spread out, and Xbox Live was the unique hook other consoles couldn't compete on.

Even if Google drops an exclusive game that's good, it'd have to be genre-defining to draw enough people. If it's (for example) a great RPG, there are still plenty of those out there.

This is probably just their next Android TV box like the Nexus Q/Player.

That said, as much as I like Google, it always feels like they half-ass their new hardware stuff constantly so I don't know if I'd really get this.
