First it was we'll listen to developers.

Then it became clear they were not interested and just tried to ignore it or put a spin on things and say they do cross play, just not with consoles.

Things got worse, now Fortnite is giving players an ultimatum if they ever played on PlayStation Network. Stay with the approved parties or start over somewhere else.

Now things are beginning to take shape on whether developers should do cross play at all because Sony doesn't want to work with Xbox One or Switch. Since Sony is such a big player it's hard to push back and it's just easier not to fight.

Good job Sony, for the players.

"Sony is a business!"

"Wow another thread/post like this!?"

"Stop complaining your ENTITLED!"

"Microsoft started it!"

I wonder if people will now demand PC + XBOX crossplay for this game when it comes out.
I hope they do.
Because if they dont it will be clear that the issue and all this hivemind has nothing to do with crossplay.
So its your time my fellows crossplay supporters instead of whining about Sony policies go for Bethesda.
PC + XBOX crossplay for Fallout 76 is in Bethesda and MS hands its time for you guys show that you really care about crossplay .
Im waiting for a 100 pages thread with people demanding Bethesda and MS position in this situation.

So, we will get PC&PS4 and PC&Xbox.

I don't see Sony changing their stance while they are in the lead. Allowing cross-console play is giving their competition a free gift. Vast majority of gamers will not care.

I don't see why things should go on as status quo. Developers need to start sending a message and that message should be we want cross play, if you do not want to be part of the overall cross play WE want to provide then you can just play with your own players. That would end the comments of nobody cares about cross play, Sony doesn't need Xbox One or Switch players and so on. There is no need to continue giving in and splitting the pc into two camps because of Sony.

I am really confused by some of the Sony console warriors or fanboys that seem to care more about their favored company "winning" on the business side than what is best for gamers. Cross play simply provides a way for friends and family to play some of their favorite games together even if they invested in a different piece of plastic, which should be seen as a good thing by all gamers. This very issue has caused my boys on Xbox to not be able to play with their cousin on PS4 with some games.

As always, I love the corporate apologism in display on Sony's behalf in a cross play thread.

Good on you, Todd, for calling Sony out on this. Hopefully they will buckle sooner rather than later.

I am seeing this sentiment pop up in a lot of cross-play threads lately. Why don't you name or challenge these so called apologists rather than throwing blanket statements?

They will eventually buckle but not because it's good for Sony but rather because the bad press is not good for Sony. Whoever the market leader is next gen, I bet they will pull away from cross play.

I hope they do, market leader or not. It's my dream to stop having to choose between which platform to get something on. No more divided friends haha

Developers of these online service games have pretty valid reasons for desiring cross-play and cross-progression (ideally, their games are platform-agnostic services on which their players can freely choose to play with one another and bring their progress and investments to wherever they choose to play), before we even talk about what the gamers want.
I really, really don't understand those of you who are only willing to imagine Sony's perspective on this matter. Some are even willing to note that these developers definitely are not 'victims' of Sony's cross-play policies (because of the connotations that come with that word), despite them not being able to achieve a vision for their games that is otherwise well within their grasp, because those developers make money regardless... but Sony's bottom line is also somehow a concern to you.

Exactly nothing. You have literally no idea how difficult it would be for them to implement such a system. This is also the fallout teams first foray into multiplayer period so this entire thing is going to be a big learning experience as it is. I can only imagine that having to address separate ecosystems in their own bubbles and divide server ecosystems for them would be even more of a pain.

Neither do you.

Bethesda isn't a start-up company.

Yes, this would be a much better response than just saying "Sony did it, go after them."

Can't blame them when Sony themselves haven't been wanting to work with them that much either. And honestly, for people mentioning, I put the PS3 issue on Sony more than Bethesda. Is Bethesda's engine great when it comes to optimization, memory management, etc? No, it's not. But when you have to essentially redo a whole part of the engine to completely fix a problem because a console is purposely designed to be hard to develop for, then yes, I'll blame Sony. They were working on another expansion, but had to cancel it because they had to shift resources to fixing the issue with the PS3 instead. That "fix" also practically broke the PC version. They should have outsourced it or something, but the BGS then wouldn't do that.

At least Sony learned from that with the PS4, so I'll give them credit with that.

Thing is, Cross-play isn't just pro-consumer but it's pro-developer too. Blocking cross-play just makes more work for a developer when they could instead be working on more productive things.

I love Sony's games, but sometimes I'll never understand their decisions (business-wise it's good and bad, not just good as Sony might think). Then again, all console manufactures can be like that.

I totally agree with all of this, actually.

Sony is the reason why they'd have to code it twice, instead of having just one player pool. Double the groups to manage, double the chance of problems, double the support. That's why the cross benefit analysis doesn't work.

Yikes still trying to come up with excuses for Sony... smh. I'm glad Todd took a stand and spoke his mind.

Because no one on PS4 will be annoyed about cross-play if they did that, but will be with Bethesda taking their game away. It would completely overshadow all the cross-play stuff.

The game is clearly not designed to be cross-play either, no game is, as it's not something you need to design something around, which is way all it takes is a flip of a switch in some cases (and why Sony's stance is extra pathetic). So that excuse wouldn't help, Bethesda would just be getting shit on by the massive PS4 userbase.

A game that is a persistent world that receives the same updates could be. So why give concessions to your overall goal of having everyone play in the same universe because one party doesn't want to? Would it not be easier for a developer to have everyone lumped together anyways?

they the only console with such a huge installbase and its in their good right to not share it with the 2 loosers.

"Loosers" lmao. Are you serious or blatantly trolling?

Minecraft Xbox One has a higher install base than PS4 by itself and now with the Better Together update it is combined with Switch, PC, Andriod and iOS. Makes the PS4 userbase look like a spec of sand. What do you say to that?

I'm sure the user in question can answer for himself.

Nah, it was addressed accordingly. You singled him out when it seems to be a common consensus across multiple threads. Now why did you do that?

Like it's easy to see why a developer might be apprehensive to let controller users play with mouse & keyboard users in a first-person shooter. Or the fact that handling different cross-play ecosystems (PS4/PC and XB/PC) in a server-based MMO would put strain on their matchmaking. One XB player in the server means only XB and PC players could play in that server and vice versa.

And I have the right to criticize them for that as a consumer and a PS4 console owner and because i'm not a Sony employee.

true but in the end all you can do is vote with your wallet and not buy a ps5 if you care about cross play more than anything else the platform offers. just talking about it for 150 pages like in that one other thread wont change shit.
