Nintendo have much more to gain from an alliance with MS and justifiably barrel rolling Sony for trying to exclude MS from crossplay when the point of it is that everybody play together, than they do from hypocritically having Sony join them on cross play and excluding MS.
Oh, please explain what is this "much more to gain from an alliance with MS" you are speaking of. You act like Microsoft and Nintendo are best bros now. Exchanging technology and inside secrets and shit.

It's quite easy for Sony to get in: Put cross-play (and maybe cross-progression?) as a PS+ feature.
They might grab a good number of new subscribers if crossplay is that important for the Fortnite people.

I already addressed this...

I'm pretty sure they already have enough online players with Ms and PC to keep servers booked for the next half decade.

Obviously you don't know Nintendo very well. The point of crossplay is so that everybody could play together, they are not going to join a Sony scheme to exclude MS when it makes them look like hypocrites. This a company that takes the moral high ground.

Nintendo is a company just like any other, they are not this morally bound company you've built up in your head. If they were we'd still have free online this generation and they wouldn't screw over youtubers giving them free advertising.

Hey nobody is saying Nintendo is not out to make money like anyone else.... but in terms of PR they try to keep it more squeaky clean than Mickey Mouse.

They wouldn't be caught dead in Sony''s labyrinth trying to shut out MS after releasing ads with them about how everybody should play together.

There is no "alliance" - crossplay is the work of the developers making it happen. MS/Nintendo's involvement at the corporate level is largely the non-enforcement of a lock, not actual work done on their part besides receiving the PR payoff. MS/Nintendo are simply more receptive to enabling this because a) both developers and customers want it and b) they themselves are currently beneficiaries of a larger pool of players while their own base of customers is generally smaller than PC/PS4.

Where is this bad PR coming from? If there's new articles popping up saying Fortnite has PS4 and Switch crossplay, you think everyone is gonna get upset at Nintendo because Microsoft isn't included? Like its Nintendo's job to look out for Microsoft now. No one is gonna get mad at Nintendo if that happens.

No, that didn't at all explain how Nintendo has "much more to gain from an alliance with MS".
Sure it did... not only are they major software partners with MS, but MS provides them with a distinct PR advantage as MS is open to playing with everyone.

If Sony is not open to playing with MS, whom Nintendo just released an add campaign with, than Nintendo will in turn reject Sony for trying to exclude them. The point of crossplay is not to exclude anyone.

Sony will look like absolute morons if they try to get Nintendo on board without MS and get rejected. Like getting shot down after asking for a date in front of your entire class back in high school.

Now that I think about it I guess one way would be to make Nintendo and Xbox users pay for Playstation plus so that they can play with the Playstation userbase. So in that way Sony still gets some money out of them by enabling cross play lol

If they are going to do it theres no how...they just should do it.
But in my opnion they simple shouldn´t.
After seeing Todd Howard´s declaration I got a lil bit worried if this is really going to happen.
Imagine what a bless playing a game like Fallout with all the perfomance issues Bethesda can deliver on consoles agaisnt someone playing over 60FPS with M+K and posibly hackers.
No thanks.

Oh god the outrage if that happened XD.
Only way I see it happening haha
Enabling cross play will just end up hurting the PS4 sales. PS4 has the biggest userbase so odds are your friends have a ps4 over a Switch or Xbox. So if you want to play with your friends you gotta buy a ps4, but by enabling it people will just pick up a switch or Xbox instead. In the long run it might hurt the ps5 sales, but I don't think many people care about the issue in real life. And I don't see it hurting the ps5 sales if there is still no cross play.

If they actually announced that, they would essentially be revealing that PS+ and equivalent services are a racket that is charged to a captive audience. But I'm sure some people would somehow do the mental gymnastics that Sony should be paid for doing literally nothing besides witholding access to a server they don't even maintain.

In a market with crossplay enabled by default you would have actual competition on the quality and provision of services between different platforms. Seeing as "competition" is so often bleated out as a justification for discrete closed off platforms I don't know why anyone here would object. Sony, MS and anyone else could absolutely continue to maintain their own friend networks and keep using that as a draw - crossplay doesn't prohibit any of that.

It should be just do it and forget about it, but it will be some sort of next-gen advancement that they'll try to milk in some way. (like PSN name changes)

PS4 and PC crossplay, sure. But for other consoles, in my opinion, they shouldn't. If they allow this, people would probably complain about exclusive games being anti-consumer since it's not available for other platforms.

Oh I see, I assume there's always gonna be an option to toggle it off (or at least there should be) so I wouldn't worry too much.

I doubt its going to be in 90% of the games anyway. Once sony says theyre allowing it people will just go back to not caring.

You realize Minecraft is one of the biggest ongoing evergreen games on Switch and 3DS right?

Plus nintendo probably uses windows environment on their pc to develop games. Its an unprecedented partnership.

They don't have to "get in".

They are the market leader, I'm not against crossplay but I don't care about it. It makes no odds to me and I'm not really bothered because there are already millions of people for me to play with on any system.

Aside from that the comments in here are straight out of a Looney bin. Like if you keep repeating the same stuff that it's somehow gonna materialise, it isn't.

Sony is in a pickle, Sony are worried, Sony is in a tough position, Sony screwed up

For a community that "cares" about the gamers so much you aren't half worried about how a multi million dollar giant at the top of its games is worrying about something pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Stop acting like you give a shit about gamers out there, your just using this as a stick to beat a company with because...well fuck knows. The cross progression thing fair enough, the cross play thing...get outta here, you don't care. Go play some video games.

The only reason I think Sony might cave on this issue is because its kinda silly to begin with. The general consensus is Sony has the better games, so if gamers are no longer beholden to the platform of their friends, there is a good argument that more gamers will choose Sony.

Being they are by far the frontrunner, the network effect obviously works in their favor. But given they arguably have the stronger platform this generation, I feel like whatever impact crossplay has is unlikely to show up on their balance sheet. Seems more like they are afraid of rocking the boat, and just want to keep the good times rolling. VS a genuine fear that it would be bad for business.

Crossplay doesn't prohibit Sony or anyone else maintaining friend networks exclusively among their own users, or maintaining party chat exclusively to PS users, etc. It just adds more to the pool for general matchmaking unless the developer goes out of their way to add a social layer of their own. It would have no impact on hypothetical future PS4 sales because they still have a large pool of PS4 players they can use to entice customers. Also - if customers don't actually care about it as you said, then why would it hurt PS4 sales in the first place?

If it becomes a widely accepted standard they will absolutely lose sales next generation though, because both developers and customers are publicly agitating about it.

They could straight up stop being cunts about it and just let it happen? They are blocking it on purpose out of spite from the previous generation, our only hope is next gen the tables turn.

Console + PC crossplay doesn't work for all games. Like I said about FFXI, PC gets a clear advantage in some situations. Even in Paragon, where Epic stopped making ranged characters because they were just better for PC players, or PS4 players that used mouse/keyboard. In paragon PS4 you could see who was on PC or PS4, the PC players didn't get this information since it would make it easy to tell who should be a main target for easy kills I suppose.

Street Fighter V works very well since the controller most fighting game players use are arcade sticks, I'm actually at a disadvantage since I use a Steam Controller, but I'm getting better and better with it!

The main reason why Sony doesn't want it is because they don't want everyone to have access. They want the consumers that want it to have it, not give it to them and others that didn't care to on a silver platter. That's what I think.

You are wrong though.

They dont want anybody to have access to crossplay, since they want gamers to be locked forever into the PS4 ecosystem.

All that talk about protecting people or kids is just PR bullshit, and if you are any indication it works.

Mock all you want.

I see a gamepass play anywhere type service being streamed to a Nintendo device from MS in the near future. MS already said they want the service on different companies devices and Nintendo needs it. They're probably deliberating it over their many lunch dates that Spencer was talking about given they work across the street from each other.

Ok, I will take the invitation and say you are one cup short of a tea set mate
Microsoft built a new Xbox One X to move the bar forward.
Why would he put a choke collar on devs all of the sudden?
There is a reason why the new DOA, Black Ops, DMC and various other games are not coming out on switch.
Microsoft allowed crossplay with Rocket League and that did not lead to any unprecedented relationships.
Enjoy the crossplay, absolutely enjoy it but come on now.

Sony is full of salty sony fanboys
I think you need to look up the whole meaning of salty....it is not Sony complaining ....
And at least NeoGaf had the sense to ban the whole fanboy finger wagging.

So...let me understand this correctly....
Sony...are blocking this feature JUST out of spite for a generation that they won .....
Am I reading this correctly?

Sony can do it by just saying yes. At the same time they should keep updating and improving the console and the ecosystem with pro-consumer #4theplayers features and policies in an effort to really make it the best place to play. They should incentivize people to play on their platforms with positive, not negative reinforcements. It's the hard way, but it's also the right way.
