If he does the right thing in the end, even for shitty "didn't actually learn" reasons who cares? It's still a win and one less person using hateful speech. I'm not telling yall to go support this guy and watch his twitch stream, but ffs if he's doing the right thing then don't try and tear him apart for "not getting it".

Stop letting perfect be the enemy of good
Openly claiming that you can use that slur in a non-hateful way and that it's your favourite word is far from good.

I'd accept good. This? This isn't good.

Is this related to that "Destiny" guy who got banned yesterday for saying F-word on stream? Apparently he got 1 month ban.

I wouldn't call those tweets "good". My bar is not that low.

That's not even the word that people used to use as the equivalent to "stupid". That's a sketchy explanation. I can't even wrap my head around any of this. How could using that word get you through anything? It wasn't even a joke, he's just embarrassed at how stupid he is.

There's nothing good about someone admitting that not only he used a homophobic slur his whole life but that apparently it's his favorite word. And he didn't learn shit, he is just saying he is not gonna use it on stream because that can get him into trouble.

Because he's not doing it because he wants to stop, he's doing it because otherwise he'll get banned. So he's not doing the right thing and just not getting it.

No, this isn't good my god.

He wants to continue using the term. Because he doesn't see the harm it causes (because he's either ignorant or just doesn't care).

He won't because it would affect him, not because it affects others. It's a lack of basic empathy for victims of homophobia and it stinks.

Making stupid jokes of it just seals the deal. He's trash, and shouldn't be applauded for acting in self interest on a matter of basic human dignity.

"I'm going to stop using this hateful speech" is what we want right? Or would you rather he continue to use the term?

Someone not using the term for any reason is better then them using the term for any reason. Knowing that his reasoning is shit is an excuse not to support his work, but at least it's a small step in the right direction.
Why are we not allowed to criticise his belief that the slur can be used in a non hateful way?

Why are we not allowed to criticise the fact that it's his favourite word?

User Banned (2 Weeks): Downplaying the use of hateful pejoratives, account still in the junior phase.
Most streamers don't use it for the same reasons. Some people don't say it because they just don't use the word period, but others use it privately amongst friends and don't use it on stream because they don't want their channels banned. He even said that he never meant anything ill by it in the tweet and that its a word he grew up with. Anyway, unlike some, I'm not gonna magically pretend like I've never used it either. It just depends on the people you're around and what you all mean by it IMO. Context is important here. I'm black and I have white friends that have used the n-word around me for example, but it's okay with me because contextually I understand it's not meant to offend. So like I said, context is key here and we should be looking for that in tweets and uses of words.

In his follow-up tweet he said that part was added as a joke:

So he's not sorry and a huge bigoted asshole?

Who knew.

Or how about we don't say these words that are clearly slurs no matter the context, and shame anyone that does so.

I'm not pretending anything, I don't use homophobic slurs because it's fucking abhorrent.

Using it before realising the impact of the word is one thing. Wanting to continue knowing the hate behind the word and then doing so for financial reasons rather than human decency is disgusting.

Stop normalising hate speech.

If you use racial or homophobic or transphobic slurs, you're a flaming garbage bag of a person. Full stop, no context necessary.

Please stop making it sound like slurs and hate speech is normal and should be tolerated.

It shouldn't. I've never used slurs in my normal speech, even around friends that do, and it wasn't fucking difficult.

It's fine that you're personally cool with it. But the people that aren't shouldn't have to put up with it just because you don't care.

I think we all grew up with "fa**ot" being used as another form of "stupid".

But, most of us grew out of it and stopped using it once it came clear that it was a homophobic slur. The fact that he's only going to stop using it after being told he might be banned for it means he's kinda a shitty person.

I have never heard someone use that word to describe something or someone as stupid. I grew up in the 80's and 90's and that word was always a derogatory word for gay, there were a couple of derogatory words that were used back then to describe someone as stupid but never the F word.

So I'm in the middle, I like some guys but mostly woman. I'm married to a woman for about 10 years now but I've had boyfriends in the past. For me it depends on the person, not their gender.

Anyway, my clique of friends didn't know this when I was young and some of them used slurs. It often hurt quite a bit but I kept quiet as I didn't want even more embarrassment.
Think twice before using them even in front of close friends.

The huge majority of black people don't like the n-word though , and especially anyone not black using it....so don't normalize it.

Must be talking about the food, it's tough when you're hungry. Must've got him through tough times.

Faggots are a traditional dish in the UK, especially South and Mid Wales and the Midlands of England. It is made from meat off-cuts and offal, especially pork.Wikipedia

Just in case no one knows this, he's obviously a trash dude.

Is there something about being a streamer and a shitty person? It seems like a lot are.
Confirmation bias on your part because you're on gaming forums and read about video game culture.

Think of it this way -- remember that roughly half of american voters chose Trump, even though only a microscopic percent of those are video game streamers.

The gaming community is pretty bigoted in general, mix that with the ego you get from streaming and it's not hard to see how a lot of them couldn't care less about others.

They believe they aren't bigots, and are incapable of seeing otherwise. To them, the very idea that they might be in the wrong doesn't indicate a problem with them, but rather a problem with whoever is accusing them, as they're so used to being lavished with praise, or at least not confronted. See this guys "not built for the Internet" tweet. There can't be any issues with him, so it must be the people criticising him who have the issues.

Or you and your friends can use a nice variety of words that exist which doesn't offend people. Just a thought.

I grew up with that word as a form of saying "stupid".

Here's the thing - changing the words you use is surprisingly easy! Even for teenagers!

I grew up thinking "spasti" is just a form of saying stupid till my mother heard me use it and calmy explained that it's a slur used against people with spastic cerebral palsy. I was 11. I never used the word again.

That dude is over 30 and at no point in his life did it occur to him that saying faggot as a word for stupid might not be the best idea? Uh huh.

I lol'd pretty hard. What an absurd twist on reclaiming a hateful word. I'm gay and I don't even say the world—biracial too and I've not interest in reclaiming the N word either.

Can't "get you through" shit unless this is his thinly veiled coming out.

Look, it's great that you don't have any issues with slurs targeting the minority you belong to. That doesn't mean that it should be acceptable, even among your friends. The normalization of slurs against minorities is the first step to marginalizing them, because it transforms the spaces where these slurs are being used into places where the targeted minorities are not welcome.
It doesn't matter if it's the intention to actually marginalize that minority with that slur or not. If you say it, especially if it happens regularly, you are creating an atmosphere in which people will feel encouraged to say it, themselves, which then attracts bigotry to be expressed openly.

Because, in the end, whether you say the n-word or "faggot" as a joke, or because you don't know better, or because you actually believe that blacks and gays are subhuman - it makes no difference when it comes down to it, as you are still saying it.
