"That last sentence was a joke, but I am serious about begrudgingly not using this slur because I can get punished for it"

i really need to make sure my kids dont get into dumb shit like watching streamers

Does he think people should feel sorry for him because he can't broadcast hate speech because it might hurt his bottom line? He seems like a fucking idiot who is completely disconnected from reality.

There are plenty of streamers who aren't hateful human garbage. I've never even heard of this guy before.

Somebody should start looking into the potential for a curated streaming platform that's targeted toward kids.

Well it looks like he understand why he shouldn't say it but just doesn't really care. I don't see the point in getting upset over someone who knows there a jerk its kind of self-defeating. On the other hand drawing attention to it by making a big post basically saying "fuck you I'm not stopping because you told me to, I just don't wanna loose money" is childish and egotistical as hell, I would almost call it pathetic.

Moe is and has always been trash. Don't let this guy fool you. He's probably only doing this to grow his following with people who think tossing that word around is OK.

I don't know the guy or how old he is, also that last part is terrible. But I can somehow relate to the "I grew up with it" part. As a teenager I used similar words in my own language when I was among friends without even remotely understanding how harmful my words could be. I had to grow up, reflect and actively stop myself from using the word to overcome that habit. Same for terms like "retarded", I still have friends who use it as a slur while I was luckily able to stop that behaviour very early.

Nevertheless, his excuse is still bad. Because it doesn't sound as if he realizes that it doesn't matter too much if he doesn't intend to harm anybody. He thinks it's enough to just tell people it's not meant like that. He should have added that he realized his mistake and not just stop it because he is afraid of getting banned...

People who are unable to learn and have no perspective shouldn't be rambling on twitter lol. Though that's like 80% of twitter.

Even as a queer person, a lot of the reactions to this guy's tweets strike me as incredibly naive.

We're not going to get most bigots to actually care about us. If they're no longer overtly racist/sexist/homophobic, it's because they want to avoid the negative consequences in being so, not because their sense of morality has changed. This guy is a little more transparent about it than others, but make no mistake that many people still think like him, even some who claim to be our 'allies'.

As long as this curtails their harmful actions in the future, I'm not gonna waste my energy getting upset about something the majority of people already do anyway.

S1 - User Banned (1 Week): Downplaying the use of hateful pejoratives as something only minorities care about
Some people are not built to live in society.

I'd argue the majority of society doesn't care about trivial things like this. They all have their own lives and responsibilities. Too much going on in their world to worry about some gamer/streamer feeling he shouldn't use a word that only a small handful of society are offended over.

Thoughts.

1. He's gonna stop using the word. That's good. I'm glad.

2. The reason is really shitty. You shouldn't use it because it's offensive, not because of money.

I think we're all too aware at this point that common decency is lost on society at large.

That's depressing, and more than a little defeatist.

You can label me whatever the fuck you want. As a minority, I've dealt with far worse so I really couldn't give two shits about people calling me defeatist.

I have to choose my battles wisely, lest I go insane. I'm a pragmatist, not an idealist.

I am intimately familiar with the personal decision to choose your battles with regard to similar issues, but that should not extend outward. Projecting that 'pragmatism' onto others and calling them "extremely naive" for the crime of speaking out against homophobia? Come on.

As some additional context on this guy he was a pro CS player until he got banned for cheating and was a big part of the CSGO gambling phase. Doesnt seem like a great guy....

Logged in to say something to this effect. I recall seeing some screenshots of him and one of the gambling site owners. Lots of back and forth about timing "big wins" on stream and getting reimbursed under the table later on after losses (these screenshots could have been a fabrication, I have no way of knowing). It's funny because shortly after all that gambling business, they had him as talent and commentating some pro-matches. People didn't seem to pay too much attention to him then, we'll see what people think now.

The CSGO e-celeb community has been at odds over language use in the past. There was one time Dazed said some not nice stuff and pretty much the entire NA competitive community that plays S rank with him had something to say about his word choice. I think it was finally sgares that said something along the lines of "you have to consider yourself beyond the reach of your twitch audience." Don't see too much of Dazed these days though I don't think really.

It's trivial depending on who you are. Hate speech is harmful to its victims. But from the privilege oozing out of your post, i understand it doesn't affect you. And because of positions like yours, bigotry carries on.

"Because it might hurt my income"

How can anybody be this much of an idiot? You have a golden opportunity to generate good PR, but no, double down on the homophobia.

Actually, no, I was responding to the claim of me be defeatist when I brought up pragmatism.

The naivete is a different issue altogether. It's this idea that this guy is some exception compared to most people who have denounced hateful/bigoted rhetoric, as if they've had some come to Jesus moment when really it's simply a matter of learning to avoid negative consequences. If you think most of our society has become more tolerant because people actually care about us and not because of the consequences of being intolerant, then you are naive.

Having said that, I'm not against people calling him out, I'm just saying that it's not worth my personal time and energy if in the end, his actions are going to change.

Most streamers don't use it for the same reasons. Some people don't say it because they just don't use the word period, but others use it privately amongst friends and don't use it on stream because they don't want their channels banned. He even said that he never meant anything ill by it in the tweet and that its a word he grew up with. Anyway, unlike some, I'm not gonna magically pretend like I've never used it either. It just depends on the people you're around and what you all mean by it IMO. Context is important here. I'm black and I have white friends that have used the n-word around me for example, but it's okay with me because contextually I understand it's not meant to offend. So like I said, context is key here and we should be looking for that in tweets and uses of words.

What you accept using the n word is your business. As a white person I'm not going to tell you what should or should not offend you about that word.

I went to high school from 1996-2000 at an old boy's high school in Boston. All people did was call each other fags. It was awful. You can also see this in the media at the time (that has since moved on to using words like pussy in the same context).

If we're talking about context, I'm pretty sure this isn't among friends if it's on a stream or something.

Why do you reply with such a mad/aggressive tone?

I'm not the one you replied to, but it's clear to me the other poster is someone who's against racism or bigotry. Don't know why you'd get mad at people like that, lol

Fucking hell. Every day I discover another "internet personality" that I loathe. It makes me want to stop looking, but I guess being disgusted is better than being ignorant. This read like a *wink* to other bigots that the ole leftist agenda was shutting down his free speech. These fucking white guys on the internet use every opportunity to try to make it about their precious snowflake privilege.

Having said that, I'm not against people calling him out, I'm just saying that it's not worth my personal time and energy if in the end, his actions aren't going to change.

Calling attention to this typo because it potentially changes what you were trying to say, buddy!

EDIT: I can't read.

This is partly the audience fault not just in gaming but in the popularity contests of the world in general.

People as the audience reward manic people who are uninhibited because they are exciting. That's just what happens. They are actors and politicians and other things and now YT or other personalities too.

Then some of them are dicks and tbh people should not be surprised. Lots of normal non-celebrity folk are dicks too.

I think he should definitely be criticized but audiences in general around the world should stop placing so much emphasis on celebrity and personalities on their favourite black rectangle eye feeding system.

That's not a typo. He's saying that it's not worth an argument if the guy is going to stop because that's the most you can expect.

Ya got a source, my man?

Boogie's post on neogaf (don't think I'm allowed to link to the site)
When I speak here at neogaf I'll use this lingo. I'll communicate using the same language and memes as you do. When I post on reddit I'll do the same. When I post on 4chan I'll do the same. The term "Conspiracyfag" means something terrible to you here and I accept that. On 4chan it only means "A member of this forum that is good at figuring out hidden agendas" and nothing more. To imply otherwise is lunacy to me, but then again I understand the forum. If you don't post there I don't expect anyone to get it, and that's fine. I choose my words carefully and I'm glad to defend it when necessary. It should be obvious to anyone that I'd sooner cut out my own tongue than use that word against another human being as an actual slur.

This strikes me as a flimsy excuse. It's obvious you weren't attacking anyone but that doesn't change the fact that, regardless of context, culture, or anything, the word is still a slur. It reminds me of grade school when everyone would say "that's gay" as a way of saying "that's dumb". We were too young and stupid to truly mean anything nasty by it, but that doesn't mean it wasn't contributing to a culture of hate. Don't claim you're an advocate of tolerance and then make exceptions, Boogie.

If that word is a slur then every person who smokes in england is a monster. Or wait, is that considered fair context? If so why isn't my use of it?

I agree that words use power and I'd never use that word in jest anywhere else, not in a video or on twitter or most likely my personal life.

but if I were in england and I wanted to bum a smoke you'd bet your ass I'd ask for a fag and be entirely without remorse.

Trump's doing pretty well for himself these days.

I mean... yeah. Trump just got a massive SC win and the Overton window has shifted pretty damn far.

It's undeniable that social media has changed how people interact and this guy is a pretty good representation of the majority. The people on social media and video sites that agree with this guy outnumber those that think it's unacceptable 10 to 1. This is the new reality; the new normal where everything is a joke regardless of how repugnant. They've successfully turned humorous apathy into counter-culture and are getting rewarded for it. If that's not winning in society, I don't know what is. It's not a good thing, it's just the unfortunate reality.
