Celeste and Kirby are duking it out for my affection, and Smash is waiting 'round the corner to defeat them both.

The only game that I can fully recommend is Monster Hunter World. Amazing SOLO game from start to end. Best boss fights, AI and animations in the industry.

I have not played Celeste and hollow knight yet. But the rest I have played have been only okay.

Fortnite easily

Followed by the 1st half or so of God Of War that I played. Even that was just pretty decent. Not a good year for me so far with games. Nothing I care for.

I've been focusing on my huge backlog mostly and haven't invested considerable time in games released this year, other than Sea of Thieves and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. All the positive comments about Celeste might push me to buy it before the Steam sale is over. Also I'm really looking forward to Yakuza 0 (PC) and Read Dead Redemption 2, I'll get those two day one.

Haven't played Celeste, SotC, or God of War yet, but they're on my list. Nothing else I've played this year so far (of the stuff that released this year) seems particularly noteworthy.

Since Hollow Knight originally came out last year, I'd probably retroactively tie it with BotW. It's that good. Hits the Metroidvania sweet spot.

Nothing new has really grabbed me this year so far. Dark Souls Remastered is probably the best game I've played this year.

Yakuza 6. I did think the combat was a step down from 0, but it looks like they are fixing that in Kiwami 2. I had some problems with the story like the interactions with Haruka and Kiryu felt so underwhelming, especially for this being the final entry with Kiryu and the ending just made that feel so much worse.

Used the first half of 2018 to catch up on titles that I have not played before. Some shout outs go to:

Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
I absolutely love this game, far more than I initially expected. Very in-depth with its combat and upgrade system. The humour is quite decent too, Ubisoft managed to make the Rabbids more tolerable for me as well.

Bayonetta 1/2 Switch
These games are amazing. Was blown away by smooth these played on the Switch undocked, especially the sequel. The action was a blast to learn more about, and love the charm and wit Bayonetta and cast bring to the story.

DK Tropical Freeze
In one word: Challenging.
But the right type of difficulty I like in some of my platformers. Retro went into creativity overboard and it showed in every world. Absolutely stunning as well.

Celeste. Haven't played a lot of games from 2018. Mostly just playing stuff from 2017 and earlier.

Nothing new from this year has pleased me. Dark Souls, Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 have come to new platforms, and I've replayed them there, and yeah, they're still incredible, but no 'real' 2018 releases have done anything for me so far. I haven't bought Detroit or Lumines yet though, and there are still a few games in the second half that I have high hopes for.

God of War for sure. I was rather sceptical going into the game, new camera angle and all. They really pulled it off though, probably my GOTY unless something really surprises me during the last part of the year.

God of War: amazing level designs and some breath taking seceneries. Wish there are more huge set pieces just like in III, the few it has are awesome.

Monster Hunter World: Could never get into the series until World. All the QoL improvements made the difference for me.

Ni No Kuni II: Not joking. It's a great game to just play and unwind. If you leave your game critics hats off, you could have fun with the game.

Yakuza 6: probably tied with 0 as the best in the series. Combat is more fluid, graphic is prettier, and Onomichi is a very charming town.

Detroit: the character interactions are what made the game.

You got me covered, except i have not played Ni No Kuni II yet but I suspect once I do it will be up there. Same with Moss!

After Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey this year is very disappointing to me so far, if i had a PS4 perhaps i would have enjoyed GOW and Detroit, but i'm not really into those heavy story driven games anymore, i rather something with good gameplay and deeper mechanics instead, i liked Bayonetta 2 which i played for the first time, and i'm gonna play soon Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Crash Trilogy and Wolfenstein 2 on Switch which looks fun, but this year i've mostly been enjoying online games as a service like Rocket League and Rainbow Six Siege

It's got to be Celeste. Frankly one of the best games I've ever played.

I don't think I played anything from 2018 besides God of War and Sea of Thieves. GoW is absolutely incredible and SoT is fine.

God of War for me with Monster Hunter world being a close second.

I've still got a few games to get through atm though (Celeste, Hollow Knight and Yakuza 6).

The two games I've mostly been playing are a late-2017 game, Xenoblade 2, and then Detroit: Become Human.

Both are probably in some of my top games of all time.

I really need to evaluate my "best of all time" someday, because there's a lot in there now lol.

Pretty subpar year so far, but Celeste is excellent, as is the full release of Subnautica.

Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
I absolutely love this game, far more than I initially expected. Very in-depth with its combat and upgrade system. The humour is quite decent too, Ubisoft managed to make the Rabbids more tolerable for me as well.

Now this is a great game from 2017 I've been catching up on as well. I just can't believe how well-refined it is. I was always positive on it, even going back to the original leak, but I didn't expect them to deliver such a complete package of great graphics, music and gameplay.

Disappointing year so far overall. That said, a few standouts:

God of War - 8.7/10
Detroit - 8.3/10
Far Cry 5 - 7.8/10
Daaamn bruh, look at you with the decimals!

Anyway, on topic, definitely these games (going to use the 100 point scale in honor of VanCityGamer).

Monster Hunter World - 8.6
God Of War - 9.1
Hollow Knight 8.498112

Great so far, I could ask for another 2017 but that would be greedy!

Top tier

God of War, Hollow Knight and Celeste

Mid tier

Ni no Kuni II and Yakuza 6

Bottom tier

Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2

My Game of the Year so far is God of War, and seeing as I have had very little resonance with the old(er) games, it just took me by complete surprise with how brilliantly crafted the whole experience is, and with lots of memorable moments along the way too.

Returning home after seeing the credits roll is just about the best tease for a sequel I can imagine!

Granted, I haven't finished Ni no Kuni II or Yakuza 6 yet however, they both felt like 'more of the same' to me, not in a bad way though. I shall go back to them when summer turns to autumn.

As for Sea of Thieves, paying £50 for arguably the shallowest game I have played in years and being fooled by certain members on here whom continuously claimed that the beta was a small fraction of the game, when the beta was more or less the same as the final game really bummed me out...

And whilst I stumble upon glitches and 'unusual moments' in the odd game or two, what I cannot abide by are buggy games that are released fully well knowing that they're buggy. And its implementation of motion blur is the worse I have ever seen in any game.

I'd argue that Microsoft don't need to buy anymore developers, rather that they need to spend their money on a far better QA department.

Sea of Thieves is probably going to be my GotY until Horizon 4 and then Red Dead.

SoT does things in a game I have never experienced before and it has brought a joy back to multiplayer that I haven't felt in years and years.

There is nothing else like it on the marketplace, nothing. Now just keep those brilliant updates coming!

I haven't played many new games. Most of my time has been spent on Xenoblade 2 and the SNES Classic.
So, my 2018 ranking so far:

1. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
2. Dragon Ball FighterZ
...
That's it!

Hopefully Ocotpath Traveller will join that list soon.

God of War and Monster Hunter World.

God of War surprised me even then. I had faith the game would be great, but nowhere near the likes of what I played.

Monster Hunter World. The best MH to date. I just wish it has more endgame contents though. I'm taking a break from the game now but will gladly be back once a proper expansion drops.
