My neighbors just loudly and suddenly reminded me about the fireworks days coming up.

JjwJAfq.jpg

If you live in a populated neighborhood, consider trying to find a place more secluded when it comes to setting off your backyard fireworks. A lot of veterans suffer from PTSD and fireworks especially when people are not expecting them, like on the Saturday before the 4th, can trigger their PTSD. If you know any vets in your neighborhood give them a heads up before you set them off so that they can at least anticipate the noise. A little consideration goes a long way.

On a similar note, I live in a community that has taken in a lot of refugees in recent years and fireworks can be quite frightening to those coming from war torn areas. If you are in a similar neighborhood keep both groups in mind.

Homemade fireworks aren't allowed here yet some people still feel the need to test them every night in the last two weeks leading up to the 4th.

Nice thread. Unfortunately many people still don't give a shit sadly. I hate firework noise as a grouchy person lol. It's the bane of my existence every year.

The reason I make a thread every year is that one of my old neighbors is a vet. During fireworks he'd always lock himself in his car and sit in the garage with the radio blasting while crying. He had to go to a nursing home last year, I hope they give him headphones or something.

Well, that's depressing.

My cousin is like this as well. But even long before that, I never got the appeal of fireworks or firecrackers, especially living in a dry area where careless people start fires with them.

My dog is cowering in a corner right now. Thankfully, my newborn doesn't seem phased yet.

I feel so bad for the vets out there.

I was picking my son up from a friend's and someone let off fireworks and their dog went ape-shit. Poor thing was scared out of her mind. Took a good long time to get her calmed down.

My local reddit community was making lots of "lol triggered!" jokes about fireworks and plane flyovers because there were warnings about them happening. When I brought up it's an issue with veterans because of PTSD I was told it's because SJWs pretend to be outraged and they weren't REAL complaints. Apparently even though real veterans do have an issue the only people saying they had an issue must be SJWs.

I live in a very liberal place but at that point the subreddit was dominated by shitty people emboldened by both GG and the 2016 election.

I've got hyperacusis, which means my sound tolerance has collapsed and loud sounds, or even sounds that most people consider normal volume, can damage my ears. As such, I appreciate this thread. I can handle fireworks in the distance with ear protection, but right outside they're just too loud.

My neighborhood goes crazy with illegal fireworks every year. In fact, every month that leads up to a big firework holiday, you will hear them. They already started a few weeks ago. Just heard another bang just now. Halloween is another big one, go off all month or two.

Didn't even think about PTSD, I just tend to find big dogs that get scared and wander out (cause stupid owners just leave them in their backyards and prob aren't even home), and of course animal control isn't around until the morning -_-

I feel bad for my dog.

However it's the Fourth of July time and people celebrate with fireworks. It usually only lasts a few days.

Another thing to remember, although not as important as vets, is people who don't work regular 9-5 schedules. I go to work at 11:30 pm which means part of my sleeping time is always disturbed by fireworks, it really makes the couple of weeks around the 4th of July absolute hell. I'd be ok with it if people just did fireworks on the 4th, one day can be dealt with. But it is everday for several hours every evening for a 2 week period. A few years ago I had a neighbour who would set off tons of fireworks for a solid 5 hours every single day over the 3 weeks leading up to the holiday. I think he must have spent several thousand dollars on the stuff, they aren't cheap.

There are noise ordinances saying you can't make a lot of noise after 11 pm, presumably because thats when most people will be sleeping. Problem a large part of the country works at night and the law doesn't really help us at all.

Even with noise ordinances in place, 10pm here, the cops don't do shit about it the first week of July. Have been told to deal with it myself when idiots were trying to set the neighborhood on fire at 2 am last year and trying to talk to drunken idiots with fireworks does nothing.

As an ex-soldier with PTSD, I have the same issue every November (I live in the UK). I have also grown to loathe balloons.

And here i thought this was going to be a thread about fireworks scaring the living shit out of our poor poor dogs (fireworks stress them so much!). Living in Mexico something like a vet with PTSD would've never come across in my mind.

What is an illegal firework shooting? What makes it illegal as opposed to a legal one? Do you need a permit to light up fireworks in your backyard in the US or something?

They sell legal ones all over. They are just little poppers or sparklers in a can. The illegal ones are loud, the ones used in firework shows (which are illegal for normal people to use, but people "know a guy" I guess). People try and set them off at schools and parks, but people are dumb and blow their limbs off sometimes or set trees on fire. In my local area, it's heavily monitored, because a former mayor's house burnt down from fireworks. So yeah, it's a fire thing.

In certain cities like mine you can only shoot fireworks off in certain zones, theyre usually parks or just empty land, I live in a apartment complex and you have people shooting fireworks off at the roofs of our parking garages.

Consumer fireworks are fucking stupid. Just loud and obnoxious and not even impressive unless you're like 5.

Depends on the city and state.

Here in my part of Alabama there is almost no restrictions(you can buy/shoot nearly professional grade stuff yourself) but when I used to spend my summer in Long Island New York it was completely illegal and they weren't even sold there.

Years ago, people gathered in the culdesac for fireworks

Guy sets off a firework that was clearly supposed to be launched in the air. Huge explosion. All the car alarms went off.

Nobody was hurt, but everyone kinda stood there looking stupid lol.

Yep I've had that experience as well. Someone once suggested saying that there was a large fight happening since cops would be more likely to show up for that, but that seems like a good way to get someone shot.

I realized over the years that people are selfish and dont give a fuck. They will fire off any fireworks until 4am, whether the fireworks are considered illegal, you have work/pets/children, or just want to enjoy your life quietly.

In some sense it's like drunk driving, people will keep doing it despite it being a nuisance or dangwe to others, and sometimes people lose parts of their bodies due to fireworks.

The week of July 4 has always been like this, give the party animals their week I say. It's hot out in most of the country this week, and people will be out late in general. Tons of folks on vaca. I wager vast vast majority of people like (or at worst politely tolerate) shiny things popping in the sky, even at 1am from 3 houses down from you in a random subdivision.

It's unfortunate all the ailments that make loud noises uncomfortable for some as well as folks trying to sleep, but I feel the onus is on them to actively avoid best they can, and let the rest of us have some fun. Close your windows, wear earplugs, deal with it; most of it is over by next weekend.

I hate fireworks.

I've never understood what makes people revel in them. Loud noises and bright lights. Simple pleasures for simple minds.

I live in Taiwan. Chinese New Year means everyone sets off a megaton of fireworks for about 3 weeks straight every year, and at any other local festival or holiday if possible. Everyone. Including children, women, and the elderly. Cops will stop their cars to watch, then drive off in search of another show.

How about you drive out away from residential areas if your fireworks are so important. And no, it isn't always just a week. Where I live this shit goes on for 2-3 weeks before the holiday. Its just people like you being rude amd inconsiderate, but that seems to be the norm these days.

It's also the day of the year with the most dogs running away from home.

As someone who has had two babies in the past few years, and a dog - fuck fireworks.

Yea not happening in DC. Basically neighborhoods all go crazy and can do whatever until midnight or so. Being on a rooftop can be impressive since you see so much stuff going off in every direction. Can be just as fun as the main show on the mall due to the amount of stuff you can see at once. It can be a little scary due to the unpredictability of it all though.

Last year I saw a lot being shot out of some apartment buildings across the street along with a huge amount being let off next to a firework stand near a metro station.

The ones going off in dumpsters that feel like they shake structures are the most annoying. Can even hear these in the day sometimes and they make you jump.

My dog shakes so much I think she's going to have a heart attack. Probably only a matter of time as she ages.

So yeah, wish people would just follow the law around here.
