it's why i haven't played Nier automata, or Monster Hunter World, or about a billion other things

"Crafting" in actiony games -- think Far Cry, Last of Us, Evil Within. Who actually enjoys this?

So much this.

Action packed linear foucused games DO NOT need crafting or durability based weapons.
It takes away from the experience. If i wan't RPG elements i'll play an RPG. Simple as that.
Games like Evil Within would be even more fun if the weapons were more streamlined instead of forcing you into a crafting hub.

Because of my giant backlog I will always look for those petty reasons to stop playing/buying games.
The last one was the new Hitman games, even though am a stealth fan, I just can't get over Agent 47 "egg" look :/

I'm not usually one to shy away from bad graphics, but if a game looks like it's from the Atari 2600 age, stick figure pixel art games, or games that look like they were hand drawn by a bored kid in detention , forget about me even trying it. There is just something about those styles that I cannot get into no matter how good the game is.

I don't think I have skipped a game or completely dropped a game because of any "petty" reason. I only do that if the game is not for me in general.

But I have waited to buy/play/get through a lot of games due to very petty reasons.

I got Assassin's Creed 3 on release, played it all the way through (why!?) and I was so disappointed in the game and myself that I completely stopped buying Assassin's Creed games. A series that was one of the first I played in HD (the excitement and amazement is hard to forget) and considered a fav during that generation. It didn't matter how much praise Black Flag got or even AC: Origins. The series was DEAD for me. I only got back to it just recently by easing myself into it via the pretty bad games in the Chronicles series and then moving up towards the more usual formula with Liberation. That sounds strange but I just couldn't jump into Black Flag immediately. It was too close to 3. Now Black Flag is next up and I am looking forward to it.

After Mass Effect 3 and the ending (plus a bunch of other plot points) that still makes me boil with rage I couldn't even go back to playing the game in the series that I had previously held so high. My hate for ME3 killed my love for ME1 for years. Again, very recently got back to it thanks to a mod that sort of makes the ending of 3 good enough.

Many others have mentioned the fanbase of certain games or just highly praised games. That is one of my reasons too. I try these games after a couple of years anyway but usually end up thinking they are just... pretty standard. Not seeing anything special and sometimes not even thinking they are very good at all compared to other games in the genre. I am not a person that hype games or expect games to be something special, with a couple exceptions because no one is perfect. I usually just take games for what they are, shut off the critical part of my brain and enjoy the experience. But with some games it's just impossible to miss the loud chanting that this is the most perfect game ever, and that can do a huge disservice to the game.

I'm not sure if mine counts as petty or irrational but I absolutely hate the Smash series for an incredibly personal reason:

I have a... difficult relationship with my brother. Throughout my childhood he would pin me down and beat me up, often giving me black eyes. This wasn't playful sibling rivalry, this was abuse. Yes, at times I may have egged him on, but even to this day, he is prone to violence at the slightest inconvenience.

He also is a "professional" Smash player. Not one anybody has heard of, but someone who does a lot of regional tournaments. He would often force me to play smash "seriously", when all I wanted to play is the mini games or with items, and assault me if I refused.

As a result, today I resent Smash. I know it's not fair, and that if I played it the way it was designed (party game not serious fighting game), I probably would enjoy it, but still, Smash makes my blood boil.

I never played A Hat in Time because of the Jontron thing. I know he's only a very small cameo and he was put in before his public controversial statements, but there's still a sad association. Despite the inevitable backlash and negative press from the Youtube community, nothing but respect for the Yooka Laylee team for not shying away from their morals

Pretentiousness and "artsy" factor. The people that champion games as art the most tend to only champion the more abstract or the games that try to emulate movies. Inside, TLOU, etc.

Very few appreciate the art of design and mechanics. Self proclaimed "artistic" games are mediocre bullshit like 50% of the time and only get praise because they're like half as compelling as the latest Planet of The Apes movie or something.

Also modern Japanese games with UI sensibility that's stuck in the early-to-mid 2000's.

These two:
Longevity and multiple choices. That's why I won't probably play The Witcher 3 ever. And Persona 5.

Single player games with forced online elements are always annoying, and in general I'm sick to the back teeth of Marvel, Star Wars and LOTRs, so anything in those IPs automatically loses points

In the first case, I never could muster enough energy to try The Witcher or Mass Effect. In the second case, I avoid games that emphasize playing online like Destiny and Anthem.

I'll also add realism. If a game has a realistic art style, or is set in a realistic setting, it's an instant turn off. Case in point: I love Sly Cooper and Infamous, but I'm really not excited at all for Ghosts of Tsushima, and I love FPS games like Resistance and Doom, but have never even touched Call of Duty or Battlefield.

Any pixel games that borrow from the Superbrothers style with the elongated and spindly characters.

ss2.png

It isn't because its pixel art or simple art as that can look great as a thousand older games can testify, as well as modern titles like Stardew Valley, Terraria, Starbound etc, or pseudo-pixel style like the figures in the Shadowrun games recalling the original Syndicate. However, something about this particular style rubs me the wrong way whether it's straight pixel style or something like Kentucky Route Zero.

Oh! I have an even more petty reason that I was just now reminded of, and it has actually stopped me from buying games I might have bought otherwise.

This is not about this game in particular, but all the games that have this. This just happened to be the latest example.

This game has positive Steam reviews but it doesn't matter. The difference between the official promo art and the game is just too big. Bye game.

Funny when the RDR2 pre-orders went live and I saw 3 different over priced editions and a 4th super duper one that didn't have the game included my interest dropped to practically nil. RDR is possibly my favourite game ever. This is the first time that the shitty pre-order culture has gotten to me. I feel disappointed in Rockstar lol Somehow I thought they'd say to Take 2 no we won't have 4 different editions with pre-order tat as the carrot. I still don't know if I'm buying it. My hype actually fell. Incredible really never had that happen before.

Also, any game that attracts "waifu" discussion is an instant no.

You nailed it OP. I can add to this list:

1) Ridiculous character designs. Especially oversexualized ones. Not touching Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for that reason.
2) Vast open world games that promise "hundreds of hours" of content in their promo material. If I see a game advertise that as a selling point, I'm out. I'm not interested in wasting time on low quality filler content.
3) Generic war/tactical shooters. Miss me with that Call of Duty/Battlefield/The Division stuff.

When Persona 5 came out in Japan and it was confirmed that you couldn't be gay again (not to even mention the gross stereotype characters), it killed my hype pretty hard tbh. Slipped from a day one purchase to something I didn't pick up for about 5 or 6 months. Still ended up enjoying it quite a bit overall, but yeah... There's honestly just no excuse for a franchise that's all about breaking free of society's oppressive expectations to keep saying "except for that one." Especially when it already got it right in Persona 2, two decades ago.

very irrational, but i really hate the gamey grappling hook mechanic. i think it is just dumb. there are games where i can live with it, e.g. tomb raider or zelda. but there are games where it is the final reason to stop playing, best example is mirror edge catalyst.

Horror games where your flashlight requires batteries and you have to babysit it. Utterly distracting from the experience.

Classic horror games like Silent Hill 2 had infinite use flashlights and nobody cried over it breaking immersion.

-Games with underage Anime girls in lingerie. Don't give me that "but shes 1000 years old" BS.

-Games advertised as being difficult. The fan base around these kinds of games also give an air of superiority complex douchebaggery. A younger me would have more than welcomed these challenging games.

-Flash web browser looking games. Yea, it's gonna be a no for me dawg.

Weak typography in general - but especially in HD remakes of SD games, that all seem to have weird issues.

What the hell is going on with the tracking and kerning in something like this? "Y ou" etc.

And the atrocious-looking, unbalanced white space in the speech balloons of The World Ends With You Final Remix. (cf. much better looking original)

Even better when it turns out to be an RPGMaker re-skin turning up in your steam queue as the tags have been loaded with catch-all and the 'overwhelmingly positive' rating is based on roughly three to for reviews that are are chin strokingly positive.

I don't think I really have any reason I'd call "petty". Most of the turn-offs are about art style, setting, or music, or being on a handheld, which have a strong impact on my enjoyment (or lack thereof) of a game, so I don't consider dismissing a game for, say, having annoying music, or being in a boring setting, to be a petty reason, though some people might call that petty.

A game being popular turnes me off

I'm always a big supporter of having playable female protagonists in games, was very supportive of the whole BFV thing as well, but I have to be honest here, I find it kinda hard to get fully immersed when playing as a female, I can still have fun of course but it just kind of created a bit of distance between me and the character I'm playing. Not that I'm bothered by it though, having a playable female protagonists is still something I'm very supportive of.

I also can't get immersed when playing as a left handed character, one of the biggest reason why I don't use Sword & Shield and Charge Blade in Monster Hunter is because those weapons are left hand only, and I'm right handed :P

I know, I am very picky when it comes to immersion.

I'm sorry your brother had that impact on your life. :(

Anime games generally turn me off, which is weird because I watch anime. It might just be the fact that the JRPGs I've played all have some of the worst writing and voice acting I've ever witnessed.

Character animations which once started can not be canceled, this really hurts the gameplay and to me personally, it feels as if I'm disconnected from the game. Example - The evil within had a animation for its health pack, which once started would take 2-3 second to complete, your character can not move during this time and is a siting duck (Especially worse during the harder levels of the game).

Fully-committed animations are necessary for some genres. The problem with TEW is that the animations are just too long for just about everything. Opening doors, climbing up a ledge, using a health kit, opening a container, throwing an object, etc.

Hollow Knight fans that act like SotN and Super Metroid are archaic and gloat as if this game is not only better than BotW but the second coming of Jesus.

Anytime there's a game that comes out and does shit like this, shitting on other games and fans being absolutely obnoxious I am immediately turned off.

Another one, the one is very very specific. I find the fans obsession with Callie and Marie disturbing as fuck. People citing their age as some kind of defense is up there with the 1000 year old dragon bullshit. I could never enjoy Splatoon because of it.

Cinematic stuff,i just either get lost and start thinking about how much better this book or this movie told that kind of story and get bored or I just quit the game. I just don't have the patience for it. especially those "action" scenes where you just walk and shit while listening to some person. I tolerated it in Half Life 2 because it is my favorite game of all time, even then when i replay it,I just get bored at those scenes.

Weapon durability. BoTW does so much interesting and crazy shit mechanically... couldn't get through it because I fucking hated the weapon durability that much.

"Crafting" in actiony games -- think Far Cry, Last of Us, Evil Within. Who actually enjoys this?

I can relate to both of these but only if done improperly.

In the attempts I have tried to play the new Zelda, I can't get my mind around getting the master sword and then having it break in a few hits. I'm not sure that is actually going to happen but the thought puts me off big time.

Crafting also needs to have a purpose other than simplifying the loot tables for the developers.

A game that does both of these correct however is Minecraft/Minetest. It makes sense that the tools break and they are easy to make. You also have to discover recipes and whatnot.

I'm going to have to disagree, just look at dead space 2's intro.

Look how much control the player has, even though this sequence could have just been a cutscene.

Dead Space has fully-committed animations too. Your melee attacks, hit reactions, reload animations, etc, are all fully-committed.

Also, that example you provided isn't an especially good one. That whole sequence is a glorified cutscene. The only thing you can do is run and if you don't, you die. That said, it doesn't really have anything to do with what we're talking about. We're talking about specific in-game interactions with fully-committed animations that are too long. TEW has plenty of those, Dead Space does not. In Dead Space, there's no animation for opening doors, picking up items or using medkits.

The treatment given to the game's music in a remake/remaster can be a dealbreaker to me.

I'm never going to repurchase Super Meat Boy if a version doesn't have the game's original soundtrack.

An excess of classic games references, especially in indie games, will also sour me on a game pretty quickly. It's one of the reasons why it took me quite some time to appreciate Super Meat Boy. We get it guys, you played the NES when you were kids. So did I. I don't need you to put "I am Error", "It's dangerous to go alone" and similar references in every game though, nor do I need continuous visual and aural nods to Megaman, Castlevania etc. Do your own damn thing.
