I chuckled to myself while reading the recent Final Fantasy XII thread, because I remember how some folks reacted to it upon release.

Final Fantasy XIII was met with a far more visceral reaction. I dislike the game for the same reasons as many, but I wonder if there will ever be a time when it is appreciated for what it is.

What are some of FFXIII's redeeming qualities?

If you learned to appreciate the game over time, what changed your mind from your initial impressions around release?

Would you have enjoyed the game more if it wasn't called Final Fantasy?

there's worse games but it's Exhibit A if you want to get into "what went wrong with Final Fantasy". time will probably never treat it kindly

I enjoyed 13 way more than 12. I found it fun to play which was not the case with 12 at all.. where you aren't really even playing it and the story while not great didn't just completely disappear halfway through.

Also Lightning rules.

I played it around the time XIII-2 was released and honestly I didn't hate it. I liked the combat system and it was the first HD Final Fantasy game. I like some things about it more than XV (more diverse cast and better combat system).

maybe, maybe not. FF13 was garbage to me. 12 was always good, just different. 13 was straight ass though. I gave it a shot recently and it was just a mess.

I found XIII to be a better game than XII and I barely played it lmao. Hated XII battle system, so if XII was able to get fans a decade down the line. Then yeah even XIII will end up having a following.

I enjoyed FFXIII, with XIII-2 being my favorite. The lore of the world is interesting but the execution is off. Some of the characters are grating notably Hope and Snow. Caius is at least top 5 FF antagonists. The combat is great especially in XIII-2 and Lightning Returns. It really all comes down to the execution of the story and how everything flowed in the first game which I feel is the result of a lot of behind-the-scenes struggles and how lost the internal SE dev teams seemed to be during the PS3/X360 era.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the whole series also has an amazing soundtrack.

XIII-2 is the better game and people barely acknowledge it, so you may be waiting for a while.
Why would anyone who didn't like XIII, bother with its direct sequel?

It doesn't matter that it might be a better game, SE made the choice to shackle XIII-2 to the XIII brand, and that's where it will stay.

Final Fantasy was originally about how each new instalment is new and fresh. By making a direct sequel, you are forcing the sequel to be judged by the quality of its predecessor.

I've absolutely loved every FF until 13. I couldn't do it. I tried many many times. I'd play 10 minutes here and there but the game is junk.

The story was lackluster, the game play was abysmal. Literally no redeeming qualities.

There will never come a time where I look back and love it. It turned me off the franchise to the point where there is nothing in this world that would get me to come back short of a return to older style and them dropping this "action" play style the series has adopted.

I have always loved FFXIIi

Hilarious when people quote me in XV threads and act like my opinion has changed retroactively

Nope. I loved this game since day one.

A really creative world and setting. Great characters. Interesting premise. Fantastic soundtrack. Fun battle system. Great art design that was a breath of fresh air in the ps3 gen.

BUT the game has huge flaws. The writing is poor and the level/world design is broken. FFX is linear but does it so much better.

I could overlook the above two but for loads of people they are basic things that should have been great. And that is why XIII may never be as appreciated. If the characters, battle system and setting didnt click for you there is less else that redeems it

With XII there is a lot more that can redeem thay game from its flaws.

Actually I didn't mind the limitations of FFXIII that much.
The story was there and the characters (almost all of them) were not bad imo.

Of course it was not even close to PS1 era levels but it wasn't bad.
The soundtrack, of course, was also on point as expected.

I think people think a bit better of FFXIII now at the expense of FFXV, which had a very poor story.
And yes, FFXIII was a good video game, it just wasn't a very good FF.

About FFXii, people think better of it now because they improved it with the release of the Zodiac version and also because a worse game was released (FFXIII).
The same basically happened with FFXIII and FFXV.

FFXIII-2 was also not bad but I really didn't like FFXIII-3.
If I had to pick one, the original FFXIII would be my picck by far, the sequels didn't match it sadly, at least in the story department.

Sure, once the kids who grew up on 13 get older. Doesn't matter what the quality is like. Nostalgia always wins.

Personally I was more entertained by 13 than I ever was by 12.
But that's not saying much considering theyre the 2 worst main FF games.

13-2 is legit underrated though. Fun game.

Agreed! XIII-2 is better in just about every way.

XIII has a wonderful soundtrack and I did enjoy the battle system, but everything around it is not enjoyable to me. The way characters are constantly separated and paradigms reset, you don't any freedom with the combat system or party building until near the end of the game. The story and characters are not written well enough, Vanille and Lightning literally never talk to each other.

The combat system (aside from the whole failure when party leader dies thing) and music of XIII are definitely its strongest qualities IMO. They are the reason a pushed through the 10 chapters of prologue to where the game opened up to being final fantasy.

I remember trying to temper my expectations and downplay my disappointment because everyone said that the game got amazing at Gran Pulse. That was a fucking lie. Traded it in right after that.

It's always been appreciated to me.

XIII is a great game. Flawed but still great. Amazing battle system, one of the best soundtracks of all time and I quite enjoy the characters. I'll take XIII over the unfinished XV with its poor battle system any single day.

I also like XIII more than XII, tho i'm not a great fan of either.

XIII has the best combat in the series imo, though they're terribly paced and it's hard to not get burned halfway.

The battle corridor model in XIII would be better in shorter games. Maybe a new IP to explore this idea would be fun.

FF13 is trash now and then. The only good thing about it is the battle system. Yes I didn't care much for the soundtrack.

12 on the other hand was always good.

Incredible soundtrack.

No, it's just a bad game. One long corridor with terrible writing and characters. The script is trash.

I played the entire game start to finish in less than a week and never started playing audiobooks/podcasts because the battle theme was so tight.

I love XIII and I like it alot more than 12. The combat is deep enough if you really want to, amazing cutscenes, voice acting, great female Lead and the soundtrack is amazing.

I feel like all final fantasy games are shit and great at the same time. One of the reasons I like them all I guess. They all have that final fantasy charm in their own way. I really enjoyed xiii for the most part. The whole "combat is one button, game is a corridor" argument is bs.

FFXIII was good, but definitely flawed as hell. It's the first game last gen that visually impressed me, so it has that going for it at least.

If anything I think people will find 13 less and less good over time, it's so mediocre in even its strong areas.

I like XIII a lot but I get why people don't like it. Granted some people are fairly hyperbolic regarding it.
It has a fantastic battle system and lovely soundtrack. I personally like the world and story quite a bit.

It is the only Final Fantasy game I dropped because it was just not fun. If I had to say anything good about it, the music and visuals we're pretty good. But everything else was a big disappointment for me.

Its a mainline final fantasy game so it will get more recognition than it deserves based on popularity alone.

i like FFXIII from the start, love the combat and don't mind about the linearity

then again i never hate FF games, even FFXV that seem to be hated by majority of ERA, i also like it as well, i like the adventures feeling and relationships among Noctis and his friends

I enjoyed it at the time, especially once it opens up at the end (lol) and I can understand why the linear nature may be too much to bear.

XIII-2 is a fantastic game and I'll go to the grave defending that one.

I appreciate the great soundtrack, and the battle system was fun to just mash through while rocking out to the awesome battle theme.
I actually think i'm in the very small minority of people who enjoyed XIII and didn't like XIII-2.

13 got more hate than it deserved. The worst part of it is that all of a sudden 12 became this classic that everyone loved on release in people's minds. I was getting out of college when 12 released and it was divisive as all hell. A lot of 13's story is nonsense but it had a lot more good characters than the hate train would admit and the story remains coherent for the first 70% of the game lol.

Obviously I'm not saying it's an all time great, but it ended up being a good game overall. It sucks that it takes until Chapter 9(of fucking 13) to finally get full control, and even then I think some of the Crystarium is locked until Ch. 10. Whoever decided to make players suffer through Sazh/Vanille as COM/RAV....possibly the 2 slowest attackers in the game guaranteeing that you won't be able to stagger easily....never actually played that shit. There are better ways to force a mixed party than holding it all back for 15 hours.

I don't think people will ever come around on XIII like they have on XII, but it did do a lot that was good.

-Amazing graphics.
-Creative environments.
-Some of Tetsuya Nomura's best character designs.
-Pretty fun battle system.
-An actually great character in Sazh.
-Fantastic soundtrack.
-Beautiful UI.

The lackluster writing, dissonance between codex entries and main plot, lack of towns and so on will always be a black mark on the game, but I think people may see it in a softer light when they have tempered expectations, because there's still quite a bit to like about it.

Same. Did not like XIII 2.

Lightning Returns is very unique though

I'm a big fan of XIII. It certainly has shortcomings, but I enjoyed the characters, was able to mostly make sense of the story, and I really enjoyed the combat system (particularly in XIII-2 where they gave you a little more control). I would re-buy and re-play in a heart beat if they brought the games to PS4. I liked XIII better than 2 or Lightning Returns, but I did overall enjoy all three.

I appreciate it.

Fantastic battle system, good music, Chapter 11.

Severely underrated game. I understand some people being disappointed in it, but it certainly isn't "worst game of all time" or "a complete joke of a game" like some people make it out to be. Reminds me of Star Wars fans trashing Episode VIII too harshly.
