im headed on a cross country road trip and I was going to get done 2ds games to play along the way
I'm for sure getting Zelda a link in time, but I was thinking of getting another game in addition
I've never played ocrania of time so I have no nostalgia for it
I've never played a proper dragon quest game only dragon quest builders which I loved. I was planning on making dq11 my first full fledged DQ title but dq8 had some really good reviews, one thing that scares me is the 80 hour play time.
I also don't okay many jrpgs, only ones I beat was skies of Arcadia and one random one on Saturn, I did really enjoy Chrono trigger though
I'm buying the games this afternoon btw

Tough one. I hate some dungeons in OOT 3d and loved every second of Dragon Quest VIII, but both are amazing. DQ is long, but every hour is fun.

There is no bad choice;)

I'm more partial to Dragon Quest 8. OoT is still on a pedestal even today and likely won't live up to the hype. But that Yangus guy?

I had Nostalgia feelings for OoT, but i couldn't finish it on the 3DS because, especially in contrast to ALBW, it's age kinda shows. (that's what you meant with 'a Link in Time'? Or do you mean A Link to the Past?)

Sure, it looks super neat, but it lacks many quality of life features and polish - which ALBW kinda oozes.

Which is not me saying you should pick DQ over it. I'd get something entirely different altogether. I just personally wouldn't play both Zelda games at the same time.

Ocarina of Time 100%.

Still far more accessible than most DQ games and an absolute treat if it's your first time with it.
3DS version cleans up a lot of the presentation and adds some QOL improvements - the only things I'd say have aged the title.
It may not be as fresh if you've played Pre-BOTW 3D Zeldas but there's a lot to it I don't think has been replicated since.

It's gotta be Ocarina of Time. My one tip for enjoying that is to have a guide handy, because frankly the game has several points where you might get frustrated by slightly obtuse design and gating, which can ruin the flow. I mean it's absolutely beatable without a guide and you should only consult one if you find yourself at a loss as to what you need to do next. Fantastic game and the 3DS version is the definitive one.

I found Dragon Quest to be an absolute slog for the one hour I managed to put up with it. But them again, I pretty much can't stand JRPGs except Xenoblade Chronicles 1.

I would say DQVIII is pretty much on a pedestal as well, atleast in internet forums like this. It's an okay game that people treats like top tier stuff.

OoT is a better option because OP probably likes Zelda-likes more and a road trip would require confort gaming i think. DQVIII would be better to play at home since he's not a jrpg vet and need to tackle the game with more care.

OOT is great, but since you're already getting Link Between Worlds (that's what you meant, right?), it's better to get DQ8 to go alongside it, for variety's sake.

Also, since you're going on a road trip, DQ8 is better for that. OOT requires more concentration, so it's the kind of game where it's best to play it in a peaceful environment in long sessions. DQ8 has a lot of sections you can play with your mind halfway elsewhere.

Dragon Quest 8 ist not only the best Dragon Quest game ever made, but also better than ANY Zelda game ever made.
Also, you already have a Zelda game at hand with A Link Between Worlds.

So your choice should be obvious.

I would say dq8 just because it is the longer game and will last the road trip. OOT is actually a pretty short game.

As someone who loves Skies of Arcadia like you, I know what it feels like to not have much drive to finish most other JRPGs. I have only beaten one Dragon Quest myself, but the whole series is very easy to appreciate if you are a fan of Skies of Arcadia I think.

Makes more sense to play Dragon Quest VIII when you already have another Zelda game you intend to play on the hardware. DQVIII will also make it clear to you if DQXI is something you want to get in on right away later this year too.

As others mentioned, do not focus too hard on the games! Enjoy your trip too.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I decided to go with Ocrania of time
Hopefully I made the right choice

Also I'm moving to the Deep south ain't gonna be much to look at imo unless you like Confederate flags (I'm generalizing, last time I went to South Carolina I only saw 1 huge one)
