Best of Show: Resident Evil 2
I'm really surprised! RE2 looks amazing, but didn't expect this.

I wasn't sure, but I assumed the absence of Cyberpunk was due to ineligibility.
Yes, they weren't playable, so they were only eligible for commendations.

They won two commendations, one for graphics, and one for innovation.

Three of Sony's awards were also commendations. Two were for graphics (TLOU 2 and Ghost of Tsushima) and one was for sound design (TLOU 2).

The genre split between action, action/adv, and RPG is getting tougher every year. It's something we think about for Game Awards too. So many games in those genre categories, but the delineation is tough.
Right, and Anthem is a great example of this.

Action makes a lot of sense, since most of the open world seems to be about shooting things in a shooter like fashion, which was what the demo largely focused on to boot.

However, obviously it's also an RPG statistically speaking, and BioWare purports the town elements make it much more so as well.

Then of course, if there are more action/adventure elements they didn't show in the demo, it could arguably go there instead, but based on what was shown, Action made the most sense to me as well.

That's huge for Capcom and RE2! Game is going to be great!

Also more Anthem love. Seems like everyone who has actually played it loves it.

Resident Evil 2 getting Best in Show seems well-deserved. I'm personally most hyped for Smash, but RE2 is right behind it, and it's clear a ton of heart went into what is a very ambitious reimagining.

REmake2 deserved it.

I'll definitely excuse DMC5 not getting any shine, since it wasn't actually playable.

Generally Action games are games where you overwhelmingly only have combat, whereas Action/Adventure games include a heavier focus on non-combat elements.

Mind, I'm not sure they always get the buckets right, but historically Action games were mainly things like shooters where you run through 12 levels shooting everyone you see, and Action/Adventure might have you sneaking around, picking up items, talking to people, platforming, that kind of thing.

How is Spider Man an Action/Adventure game while Anthem is an Action game? Presumably Anthem will be the one that leans way more into RPG elements (loot/leveling system, dialogue trees, class system, etc). Maybe it's just a matter of what category each game submits itself for.

RE2 did look great, and I love me a good remake, but I'm not quite sure how to feel about a remake winning Best In Show. In fairness, the critics have had time with these games that I haven't, but it does strike me as odd.

I still do not really get the idea of commendations.

First require hands on playability.

Then not doing that för graphics and sound, but still count winning those categories as high as the hands on categories...

Edit: Have checked the history of commendations
Only Rage 2010 won both ordinary award and a commendation. Often there have been no winners of these special prices, suddenly this year there are five!

Deserved win for the best game shown at E3! Resident Evil 2 is going to be the best RE game since RE4. I cannot wait.

Resi 2 deserves it. Now that's how you execute a remake.

Happy for Dreams getting some recognition too. Winning best original game bodes well for the final product.

I really can't disagree with any of those. Spider-Man wouldn't be my console choice but the game does look great.

It's more of a reimagining than remake. They build totally new game from nothing. It looks amazing from all of the gameplay videos. It totally deserves be game of the E3 imo.

This made me look up the Xbox Adaptive Controller. That's one of the coolest things I've seen in a while.

Can somebody give me a good explanation of what defines an Indie game?

Ori and the Will of the Wisps won best indie game, but it has the support of Microsoft Studios behind it. Does this mean that as long as an independent studio develops a game, it doesn't matter who else is involved? If so, does that make Spider-man an indie game? I need answers!

It's a genre instead of an independent game at this point.

So much for Sony having a terrible E3...

Console warrior nonsense. They had a fantastic lineup of games at E3, arguably the best.

The problem is that for those watching from home, it was overshadowed with their mindbogglingly terrible presentation. It was so awkward and poorly thought out, that it honestly took a lot of the wind out of the conference.

If Dreams hadn't won best Original Game I would've been shocked. I'm very curious how that game is going to turn out.

Those awards are complete trash. I agree that RE2 it's the best but everything else it's money out front from the publisher's.

So much for Sony having a terrible E3...

They didn't have a terrible E3, they just had a horrendously ill-conceived presser that seemed dead-set to sabotage the excellent line-up of games that featured during it.

- Don't prioritise the audience attending over the millions watching via internet.
- Don't include stage gimmicks.
- Don't have musical performances.
- Don't have a running time of 50 minutes (seriously, all the games announced in the days prior could've easily been at that conference).
- And most important of all, don't ever EVER have Sid Shuman appear at any point.
