I just got this email...

Hi [REDACTED],

You contributed a review on Netflix within the last year. We wanted to let you know that this feature will be retired on 30th July due to declining usage.

We appreciate you taking time to write a review. All of your reviews will be available at netflix.com/reviews until 30th July.

Honestly, probably for the best. User reviews are hard to be taken seriously for me unless you know the reviewers have actually seen or used something.

And if Netflix did that I wouldn't really know since they're so out of the way in the first place

So they take away rankings so I get fed awful movies on my dash and now this lol. Getting close to unsubbing. Might just do temp subs if any future Marvel show catches my eye or something.

The Last Jedi hits Netflix and suddenly they're removing user reviews?

Good. User reviews are rubbish, no matter what the platform is (looking at you, Steam).

Netflix is the fucking pits at making stuff apparent to users. Had no idea this existed, have to rely on fucking wikipedia to know when the Netflix Originals are out every month.

I feel like this was partially motivated by idiots leaving The Last Jedi, 1 star reviews as soon as it popped up on Netflix.

Can't say I ever cared about this. I thought the reviews were done away with long ago.

I used to review movies when I received DVDs / Blu-Rays but we cut that out years ago. Honestly had forgotten it was even a thing.

I checked review regularly. It was only viewable on the website version. I logged on the website regularly just to check.

This sucks

I always discover what I'll watch and how it was received outside of Netflix then I just use the site to search for it, so this doesn't bother me in the least.

Nothing of value was lost... I hope they focus on content discovery based on the current thumbs up/down system.

Getting recommended random netflix originals that have nothing to do with what I watched is pretty damn dumb.

Didn't even know there were user reviews. Only thing is I see is the thumbs up or down that you rate lol which are pretty much useless.

I use user reviews to vet the quality of stand up specials and documentaries -- both can be really hit or miss on Netflix. It makes sense for the company to move away from reviews considering the interests of the production companies they do business with.

That was the star rating system that was replaced with the thumbs up/down. They are now removing actual written reviews.
They're three clicks deep, under a tab that doesn't necessarily indicate it has reviews, and only on the website AFAIK so it makes sense few people knew about it much less took advantage of it.

Honestly, if the only time most people even think about these systems is in the context of review bombing... why not remove them, I guess?

I've never met a content licensor that was happy about the possibility of negative customer reviews.

I doubt this has anything to do with whether people used those reviews or not. Between removing them and moving to a thumbs up system I think its fair to say Netflix is trying to put a more positive spin on their content overall.
