Maybe they thought it was gonna be like gym subscriptions but sedentary > active lifestyle was their downfall. )

Moviepass always seemed like a weird way to do things to me, I'm not american so when I learned that it wasn't normal in america to have a subscription service for cinemas I was kind of surprised to be honest.

As others have said before, in the UK we've had them in one form or another for over a decade now, I have a cineworld subscription, I pay £17.99 a month and I can see any number of movies I want, they don't even limit you to one a day or one a week like what seems to be the case with the ones now appearing in the US. A few years ago I would go to the movies every Monday with a friend who also had a pass and we'd see 2-3 movies in one day, one after the other. We can even book online in advance without needing to be anywhere near the place.

The only restriction they had for watching movies was that you couldn't get tickets for more than one movie that was showing at the same time that day, Like I couldn't get tickets for a movie starting at 1pm and then one that also started at 1:20pm as clearly I couldn't see both at the same time.

Plus my pass gets me 25% off the food and drinks in the Cinema, as well as 10-25% off at restaurants nearby as well.

Hopefully the US can start having subscriptions become more of a normal thing for movie theaters because whenever I go and stay with my girlfriend in America it always sucks how much we spend on going to see films compared to when I am in the UK.

They'll do some crazy stuff before the end to keep it afloat a little longer.

I saw their movie American Animals. Doing my part

I mean, you got Joe Bob idiot on the internet when this all started who was like "how they gonna make money?! they are nuts!", but hey what does he know. Apparently everyone but Moviepass understood math better than them.

Everyone come to my restaurant. For a mere $9.99 a month*, you can eat any dish ever made by a person. If the meal doesn't meet with your approval, it's on us.

*Restaurant only open for one day. May be funded with drug money.

Yeah I live within 10 minutes of 2 cinemas - one's a multiplex (where I have my unlimited card) and the other covers all my art-house needs, which I go to maybe once a month. I guess I spend about £300 a year on movie tickets (unlimited sub + art-house tickets) but I see like 120 movies a year so it works out damn cheap (about £2.50 a ticket).

I fucking hate you

I hope you get a popcorn kernel stuck in your teeth

l just subbed to synamia 3 tickets for 15$/month and it feels like I won the lottery compared to the prices we pay here in Canada lol

I'm sure it was a fun ride for their customers. Did they really bank on people only seeing 1 move or less per month? Even if they sold data it wouldn't make much sense. Like I'm paying 10/month and can see a movie a day, I'll pretty much watch anything if I've got a free day and bored enough.

I'm honestly surprised no one will even buy their corpse for $18M.

There's so much money out there and these guys can't find anyone?

I switched over to Sinemia. So far they've been great.

To be fair, I only watched ~2 movies a month when I was on Moviepass anyway. This does mean Sinemia is saving me money over MoviePass, and I can order tickets in advance.

They likely expected to get more partnerships and companies tossing money at them after they became so big with subscribers, instead everyone kinda just snubbed them and rightfully so.

Also they likely didn't think it was gonna go so bad, that like many subscription services, you get people who sub and never use the service, so it makes up for those who do use the service.

I think the cost of going out to the movies has risen so much along with a decline in interesting movies that people were forced to be more selective about the films they went to see versus the films they were willing to wait to hit streaming services / digital / disc and MoviePass interpreted that as people really didn't care about going to the movies and wouldn't use the service that often but it would be cheap enough that they'd keep the subscription running "just in case". Instead, people really are interested in and enjoy going to the movies but the cost per movie outing is outrageous and this solved that issue for many people.

I honestly haven't been to a movie theater in 7-8 years and this would have gotten me back in the theater but I never signed up for it because of the negativity surrounding it here at ERA.

Either that or they thought someone would buy them before they had to figure out their own system. I think the subscription model will be a thing but not before people stop going to the movies again. There's not even an AMC theater in my state so I've gained nothing from this currently.

Good take. I skipped movie pass because it was doomed from the start didn't seem worth the hassle of jumping in to. But I signed up for the AMC pass and have already seen more movies in a week than I did in the 3 months prior. Not only that, it paid for itself on the first ticket (Dolby Cinema ticket is $23 + booking fee in LA). Movie pass and now AMC are dramatically underestimating how much people with 2 hours to kill will take advantage of seeing a free movie.

What's really amazing to me is all the people who think they were smart for not signing up. All the reasons it was a bad business plan are also the reasons that signing up was a good move.

I'm fine with it dying. Got my money's worth and Costco will refund me :).

Or at least half or something. Then I'll sign up for the awesome looking AMC plan.

Shame, honestly would've been open to paying $20 / month since 1 movie already goes break-even for me

It's unfortunate but not surprising with the way they are set up these days. I've been subscribed to Moviepass since 2015, and as soon as the price dropped I knew it was only a matter of time. Definitely fun while it lasted, especially this past year with the cheaper price.

I should probably get around to watching Incredible 2 sooner rather than later, now.

I'd move on to the AMC plan after MoviePass folds, but the nearest one is over 30 minutes away with no traffic and it's a dump. Rainy day movies at my elementary school looked and sounded better.

I thought their pivot was trying to get tickets at discount from theatres and money from studios. They were testing the effects of locking MP subscribers from certain movies for a weekend to see if it affected ticket sales. Guess they thought MP would prop up less popular movies and they'd have some leverage but nope. Oddly enough they've been making the app awesome to use despite burning through money. E-tickets on MP are ultra convenient lol. Just pick your seat in the morning and Bam no more issues with getting shitty seats for popular movies.

Plus AMC just raised their normal ticket price to $16.50 here. Ridiculous but thanks MP.

I'm running Moviepass' pockets until they die. It was absolutely a too good to be true deal. I'll end up doing the math on how much money I've saved by using the subscription when it's all said and done, but until that time I hope they do all they can to stick around.

Just the amount of Regal points I have banked from using MP in tandem with the Crown Rewards will have me seeing films well into the end of the year. It's ridiculous.

I saw 9 movies using it in June and I'm going to see Sicario 2 tonight, so I feel pretty good.

Is Regal going to start competing with their own service?

I signed on expecting it to burn bright for a short period. At least it seems AMC is trying to match the service, and maybe Regal can jump on.

Hope it lasts a couple more months at least, I'll enjoy it while I can. Probably not gonna sign up for the AMC one, I don't have any of those theaters close by.

Edit: Anyone tried Sinema? The 2 movie per month plan looks pretty good, would still save me money.
