Why Did the Rhode Island Democratic Party Endorse an Alt-Right Supporter Over a Progressive Incumbent?

Some angry Democrats have been circulating screenshots from a Twitter user also named Michael Earnheart, who closely resembles the picture on Michael Earnheart's Facebook page. In one exchange on May 26, whose authenticity was verified by Slate, Earnheart wrote on Twitter that undocumented immigrants are "self-entitled lawbreakers and thieves," in response to a tweet from the Washington Post's Radley Balko criticizing the Trump administration's child-separation policy. In this thread, Earnheart also alleged that many liberal and left opponents of the Trump administration's immigration policies "don't believe in God."

An archived version of Earnheart's Twitter page accessible on the Wayback Machine also features retweets of posts by Roseanne Barr, Donald Trump Jr., Pizzagate conspiracy theorist Mike Cernovich, and alt-right journalist Laura Loomer. Earnheart also made Islamophobic comments over a retweet of a post by alt-right figure Gavin McInnes about "Muslim pedophiles." "We are normalizing grooming gangs and creating and lending legitimacy to rape culture by allowing these garbage human beings to live in civilized society," he wrote. "Is the UK government actually stupid?"

Public records show that a Michael Earnheart, of the same age and location, registered as a Republican in 2014 and voted as one in the 2016 election.

Walsh told Slate that the state party's endorsement is "punishment" for her opposition to the positions of Rhode Island's House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, a pro-life Democrat who had an A+ rating from the NRA in 2016. "This is all very expected with the way our political machine is run in Rhode Island," she said. "It only took two years to piss off the speaker this thoroughly. I'm pretty impressed with myself."

Not a good look for the RI Democratic Party. How much weight does their endorsement carry? Is Walsh likely to lose her seat?

Being more afraid of the left than ultra right is incredibly stupid.
It makes perfect sense if you see what corporate democrats really are. They're after money.

Justice democrats and real progressives are coming to take away the gravy train. No corporate donations. That is the scariest thing in the world to these people. They literally are fine with unnecessary war, not doing anything about climate change, and people dying bankrupt with no health care as long as they keep getting money.

People should be expecting this by now from the democratic party. They need to be pushed out.

Rhode Island is effectively a one-party state so you see this more than other places because the Big Tent has to be all-encompassing.

Rhode Island is a mess politically. Most people here are too lazy and/or unconcerned with politics and those who do have some drive are viewed with suspicion and fear. For being surrounded by strongly liberal leaning states, Rhode Island would be the first to go RED.

Rhode Island is Southeastern Massachusetts without Boston. Except there is more mob presence.

Some establishment Democrats would rather sink aboard a luxury cruise ship then paddle away on a progressive life boat.

It also doesn't help that only Dems win in most races so everyone runs as one. Even if they don't belong in the party. Combine that with the fact that the state was run by the mob for years and people here almost expect their politicians to be crooks to the point where politicians will wear it like a badge of honor (look up Buddy Cianci), and you have a really bad mix. That being said, at least it is a blue state for the most part.

I don't see the controversy. If the speaker is an anti-choice gun nut this Earnhart dude should fit right in.

Maaan fuck this dude. Not super familiar with RI politics, any chance the other Dem in the primary pushes this guy out?

Respectfully, the JD are bad. Root for better reformers, like the DSA.

Not completely familiar with RI politics, but I feel that *this* is a perfect situation to push for better standards. +82 dem seat should be as progressive as it gets, and there's no harm by "in-fighting". In fact, it looks more like an infiltration if they're pushing what is essentially an alt-right dud. Give em the boot.

So this dude that was apparently driven to vote for trump due to dislike of Hillary registered as a republican when he first registered with the state in 2014.

I think the reaction to the actions and stances of Dems like Manchin can be overblown, but this is a case where those on the left have every reason to be pissed. This is corruption that's exploiting a very blue place and ignoring the political shifts happening right now.

Yup, this is utterly ridiculous. Machine politics are horrible.
