It doesn't work like that.

For one, you don't have to kill every single guard. Not even close.

For two, a mansion full of guards and nobles is counted towards the same total as a few gang members and plague victims. It's just an arbitrary numerical limit. The game doesn't care who dies or how. It's just X-1 deaths=good, X+1 deaths=bad.

The cities in question are already littered with corpses. They're in the middle of plagues and revolutions.

"I was totally fine with the literal piles of plague bodies and murder victims, but then I heard about a handful of city watchmen getting eaten by rats and that was just too much. Life is meaningless! I'm going to be evil now!"

Plus, like I said, often the game is straight up telling me that I'd be saving more lives by killing particular people since the world is apparently somehow populated by like 40% serial killers.

No the game is telling you that there's consequences to seizing the throne by killing your guards and citizens with the powers of a forbidden dark god.

Also everything in gaming is an arbitrary numerical limit. It's all either 0 or 1 in the end.

I know. My problem is:

a) Those consequences make no damn sense. Same guards get eaten by rats in a city where people are getting eaten by rats all the time. Some gang members who were already in the middle of a gang war got stabbed. Oh dear, now Emily is evil. Because consequences yo.

b) It penalizes using the fun abilities and mechanics. "Here are fun toys. Do not use them."

Sure. Some games just maintain the illusion better. Dishonored is not one of those games.

I'm playing this now. Having a great time so far, and I've loved every Dishonored game up to this point. This version feels designed to play more aggressively. Lurk feels less hesitant to be who she is.

I mean, Lost Legacy had great leading women characters too.

Anyway, I really enjoyed my time with Dishonored 2, it's one of the most satisfying games that I've ever played. Prey was also phenomenal (probably enjoyed it more than Dishonored), and I'm looking forward to playing DotO at some point.
Don't get me wrong, I'm playing through lost legacy now and it's awesome too. Better paced than uncharted 4 in my opinion and the female leads are cool too. It's just sad to see these games not get the shine they deserve.

Just last weekend I finished a month-long run of replaying all of the Dishonored games, in both Low and High Chaos (and for the first time in High Chaos). That includes the DLC and for both Emily and Corvo in Dishonored 2. I ran through Death of the Outsider in New Game+, which I had never done before.

It cannot be overstated how great this franchise is. Yeah, I understand some of the complaints about High Chaos, but I actually do like the Chaos system much more than Death's implementation. Though Death allows for more experimentation without the fear of unintended consequences

The one thing I never really delved into when playing this games the first go 'round was how they can be speedran. I even incorporated this into my subsequent runs, after getting the Low Chaos and ghost/no kill runs. In Dishonored 2 I would halve the time it took it for me to beat the game the first time (ghost/no kill) and then halve it again when I played as Emily. I halved the time in Death of the Outsider on my New Game+ run, as well.

The story, the level design, the characters, and the gameplay are all top tier in the Dishonored franchise. And, yeah, I'm gushing about the series as a whole, but Death of the Outsider is a fantastic exclamation point to the series. Billy Lurk is a fantastic character and I love how she plays differently than Corvo, who plays differently than Emily, who plays differently than Billy.

I'm going to spoiler tag this, and it's something I never experienced in Dishonored 2 until after I started up this replay Death of the Outsider and was completely confused why Billy Lurk's appearance was different.

Knocking out Artemis Stilton in Dishonored 2 changes Billy Lurk's appearance and causes Artemis to be an ally for the remainder of the game. I was super surprised to have knocked him out, gone back into the past mansion, time travel, and then come across a maid where there should've been a soldier. I was tickled pink seeing the Stilton mansion in good order and all of the wonderful things the NPCs had to say about Artemis.

The amount of attention to detail, in the world, characters, and lore elevates the franchise even further, in my eyes. Yeah, I love this series.

I didn't forget about it, I bought it day one because I love this series and I'd be damned if I didn't support one of my favorite characters in the series

Bank Heist and the Oraculum are the best levels in the game, crazy how above and beyond Arkane is in Level Design compared to other game developers. Truly Nintendo is the only company that can rival them

Arkane is one of the best developers when it comes to creat a mind blowing levels designs with crazy amount of details to bring them to life with very enjoyable gameplay mechanics.

I hope their next big games come next year... either new IP or Prey 2 or Dishonored 3, anything these awesome guys maked have my full 60$ and attention day 1.

I only ever played the Dishonored 2 demo (PS4) and ended up not buying it due it having some really wonky ass guard behavior and audio issues. I always play with headphones and the audio was all over the place. A guard right in front of me sounding like he was in the next room over and weird stuff like that.

Wonky guard behavior as in it seemed completely random whether they could spot me or not and I wasn't even remotely sure why/when/how when it happened.

I had beaten Dishonored 1 twice before and really, really like that game but the demo version at least of 2 felt totally off.

Two questions:

1. Does 'Death of the Outsider' suffer from the same issues?
2. Were these issues ever patched in Dishonored 2? I'd still like to pick it up actually.

If I liked Dishonored but bounced off Dishonored 2, is there any chance I'd like this? It sounds good but me bouncing off of both Prey and Dishonored 2 has me concerned.

What didn't you like about 2? I found that it improved on 1 in just about every aspect.

I don't know if this a function of decaying game ability, or less patience for failure, or functional changes in the game, but I found the game far harder to navigate than the first game. In the very first real mission, I'd either get lost in some of the more vertical areas or I'd get overwhelmed by enemies and couldn't deal with all of them.

My sense is that 2 might be a little bit more vertical in design and more dense in enemies than 1 and that's what's causing me to bounce off so hard but I don't know for sure either way. I got farther in Prey, but not by much.

Its good but the last level in Death of the Outsider is pure dogshit, its by far one of the worst Dishonored levels ever made.

I admit it wasn't great. Especially compared to the previous two which were A+ tier. Those Envisioned were scary as hell, though!
...Or they would have been if you couldn't just save scum. >.>

I would say the DLC is pretty good overall but the last level puts such a bad taste in my mouth that I havent had the slightest desire to revisit it. I still dont think I ever ended up beating the final level because it was so annoying and linear.

It's a rather good expansion, but not up to the level of the first two games. It drags some and the mission structure isn't as good as it was in those. Still well worth playing and rather good, though.

b) If you're killing a bunch of people and gleefully using lethal powers.. how is being given more canon fodder to use your fun powers on considered punishment or penalization?

First off, it's not just guards. The game counts all kills the same. Killing gang members and literal serial killers is somehow just as "chaotic" as killing guards.

Guards are already dying like flies. Everyone is dying. There's been a coup. There are gang wars. There's swarms of rats eating people. There's a fucking plague. They're dumping literal train loads of corpses.

"Casualty report for the week?"
"23 city watchmen, 5 officers, 311 commoners, 12 nobility, sir."
"Carry on."

"Casualty report for the week?

28 city watchmen, 9 officers, 328 commoners, 19 nobility, sir."
"OH MY GOD! NOW I'M ON EDGE!"

And Corvo murders a bunch of people, having a butcher for a father influences how his daughter the new Empress turns out.
The game doesn't work like that though. You can murder a bunch of people and everything is fine. Then you murder one more and oh no now everything is evil!

Kill 30 people: Emily is an innocent little angel.
Kill 31 people: Emily is an evil tyrant.

(Or whatever the exact numbers are.)

b) If you're killing a bunch of people and gleefully using lethal powers.. how is being given more canon fodder to use your fun powers on considered punishment or penalization?
It isn't. Being handed the evil ending is.

So they fixed the PC performance for this ulbut didn't go back and put the optimizations into the base game?

The Dishonerd 2 series was excellent. Great Game play tons of options. Made you feel like a magic stealth ninja. How you played effected Emily's dialogue. Great female character that was not defined by her gender but by her actions. This board will break their necks pointing out how bad a design is,or how sexualized someone is, but they rarely celebrate when things are done well. This game is an example on top of being a great game.

Then Arkane does it again with Billie Lurk, the most rare unicorn of all video game protagonists, a black woman. DotO tones down some of the OPness of Emily which allows for more vantage point planning. (Domino could completely wreck a room and it was obvious they had to design around it.) Then they got Rosario Dawson to voice her. Man I'm really reminiscing over these two games.

When people crow about single player games I always point to This game series and Prey. Both excellent games that nobody bought. But I guess they aren't third person action games with gritty story lines or exclusives so people didn't pay attention.

Dishonered, amazing gameplay, AND Rosario Dawson. That's how they got me and I'm glad they did. Totally worth the money.

Dishonored is one of those games that I love when Im playing it, but soon as I stop for a day or so, I completely forget it exists, and I have no idea why.

This goes for both 1 and 2.

For those playing on PS4, it's currently 33% off on PSN (NA):
https://store.playstation.com/en-ca/product/UP1003-CUSA08793_00-BLKHRT0000000000
($27 CAD, I'm guessing $20 USD)

Also the Dishonored Complete Collection is 60% OFF, including the Dishonored Definitive Edition, Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider. It ends up being 31 USD (in the Mexico PS Store, but we always get the US prices IIRC)
https://store.playstation.com/es-mx/product/UP1003-CUSA08793_00-DOTOCOMPLETEBUND

I never finished the first Dishonored on PS3, since it died before I could, but now I'm thinking of getting it with the Complete Collection. But it's 96 GB in size!

Wow with PSPlus this thing is $44 Canadian (Probably $40 USD) and for everything Dishonored that's a fantastic buy.

Good timing, I just bought this and finished the first mission. Not much to say except it feels like more Dishonored 2, which is fine by me since it was so much better than the first game.
