I like them both. They have their pros and cons, but I don't have a problem with either if they are implemented correctly

There's a place for both but I like open with a bit of structure like God of War

Too open and the pacing and story beats often become a mess

More linear and structured please... The fully open world balance is a really hard thing to get right and often ends up feeling too empty for me. I guess the Zelda games are a good example; I really didn't care for BotW because of how wide open and barren it seemed. I prefer having my games designed with a solid, natural flow of progression and narrative in mind... Doing it that way most likely saves a lot of dev time as well.

I like open linear because is a bit of the best of both worlds, linear enough to give you some focused experience with hand crafted enviroments but open enough to not feel like a corridor.

Lately, I'm thorn too.

I usually prefer full open world, but I'm having a hard time finishing Horizon. Feels like an Ubisoft game, and I think I'm tired of that formula.

On the other hand, I loved God of War, but the world felt cramped, like it was Jormungandr's potty. It wasn't convincing as a huge Nordic world.

It's not a surprise that the best game of all time, Super Metroid, is open linear!

There's certainly a low supply of "wide-linear" games because fully open-world is the trend right now, but too many AAA fully open-world games try to cram everything in there when all those elements don't exactly mesh together. BOTW is one of the best ones because it cuts out a lot of stuff.

I think FFXV could have been better if it wasn't so linear because the open world was kind of neat. That game had a weird structure.
