Man, seems like US Netflix has a bunch more good stuff than mine, no Eyes of my Mother, The VVitch The Wailing to be found here, all those are fantastic. Eyes of my Mother in particular is... very unsettling, hard to forget that movie.

From what I see on mine, I'd recommend:

Hush
Sinister
Creep I & II
The Invitation (more of a thriller, still great)
You're Next

Netflix Belgium is piss poor for horror, bah

Kill List.

It's on Prime in the UK, so hopefully US too. It's up there as one of my favourite films of the last ten years alongside The Witch. Deeply unsettling, I watch it every now and again and every time I'm still thinking about it a few days later.

I really liked The Ritual. Annihalation certainly isn't pure horror, but I liked that even more. It has a creepy atmosphere throughout as well as a truly terrifying scene.

Ravenous (2017) is a top five ever zombie movie IMO.

Les Affamés will be available March 2, 2018, on Netflix in markets around the world, with the exceptions of Canada, Latin America and Eastern Europe. It will be available to Canadian Netflix members starting next year.

Thanks Netflix and whoever okayed this. Movie set in Quebec, but Canadians have to wait a year!

There's a recent new Iranian horror film on Netflix called Under The Shadow. Its unnerving and scary at times. Has a few jumpscares too if you can withstand them but like well made Iranian films, the "horror" in the movie can be ascribed to the society at large as metaphor. The movie takes place soon after the Iranian Revolution and when Iraq and Iran are in a bitter war.

I just wanted to thank everyone who suggested The Endless. What a great movie.

So based on Era's recommendations, here's an update:

1. The Wailing: Some good atmosphere and really good acting, but some random goofy parts hurt it a bit (the guy getting struck by lightning) as well as the looming frustration of "Just talk it out. Just. Talk!"

2. Resolution: Despite some decent bromance, I found this a really boring movie with little payoff. Is Endless any better? It honestly felt like a waste of time.

3. Hereditary was great, and a real rare breed. I find myself shifting uncontrollably in my seat in the theater. It's exactly the kind of unsettling tone and existential dread I'm looking for.

I have already seen Babadok, It Follows, and Let Me In. You can stop recommending those.

I recently watched Oculus and found it to be pretty creepy. Same director as Hush and Gerald's Game. Bonus if you like Karen Gillan.

Both great movies, but wouldn't really call them horror. Going into these films expecting that may make them disappointing to the OP.

The Invitation is a film that I feel incapable of getting. Even if people want to call it a "thriller" instead of a horror, I genuinely did not find anything tense, anxious, or spooky about it.

Not trying to sound like some badass either - I fucking found House of the Devil properly creepy when I first saw it, and basically nothing happens in that film for the first 2/3rds.

Did anyone see Cargo? Is it good?

Yeah I was incredibly disappointed by The Invitation considering how much people had been playing it up.

V/H/S 2 is on Netflix. While it's super hit or miss, Gareth Evans's piece on there is pretty fun. Maybe more fun than "scary" as far as horror films go, though.

They also have XX on there if you're looking for a horror film anthology by female directors. I only found one of the shorts to be entertaining though.

Before I Wake isn't really scary (or meant to be, I think), but it's a well done drama with a slight horror bent to it. Jacob Tremblay and Tom Jane are good in it.

Cargo is not horror. It's an okay zombie movie. It has characters doing incredibly dumb ass things so it's a very frustrating watch.

Also whats with the hate on The Invitation? The movie is absolutely splendid. The conceit is really simple and it was just fun to watch it all unfold. Also I wouldn't label it horror either. Art house thriller perhaps.

Have you seen any Korean horror or action movies before? Tonal shifts like that is par for the course

There's a recent TV show on Netflix called 'Anjaan' that is kind of like an Indian X-Files (a man detective is paired up with a woman detective to investigate strange events) except this is more about ghosts than about aliens. Here it's switched so the man is the skeptic and the woman is the one who 'wants to believe'.

I only checked it out because I'm of Indian descent and sometimes get curious what the state of horror output from India is. Usually they're pretty bad, but this show I actually enjoyed quite a bit. It's less dramatic than those Bollywood style things, more down to earth. To be honest, I enjoyed the show much more than many of the other X-Files wannabees that have sprung up over the years on US television. It just feels like it comes from a more honest place somehow.

The show isn't perfect by any means, but it gets better as the episodes go along and the mythos builds (as well as getting accustomed to the characters, and I suppose the actors settling into their roles). Mostly, each episode is separate case/investigation, but there is also an ongoing story arc, again like the X-Files.

Creep is really 'creepy', the ending will haunt you. So well done and really unsetting.

I laughed at seeing Tau mentioned in the first few posts. I watched it after rewatching the original Saw, thinking it'd be a sci-fi equivalent. The only thing Tau was was a waste of time. I've never wanted my time back more after seeing a movie.

The Ritual felt uninspired but it had some neat elements to it. I'd say it was average, teetering on slightly above average.

The Void was really cool visually, and, for a time, thematically. I just wish there would have been a better payoff for everything. It didn't deliver for me.

We Are Still Here was really enjoyable. Slow burn, but it's a neat little package and wraps itself up nicely. Highly recommended. Not wholly original, but the way it plays out is great.

Krampus (with Adam Scott) is a nice twist. It was really enjoyable, especially since I'm a sucker for Christmas-themed stuff. A Christmas-time horror movie? Yes, please.

I'll give Hush a big shout-out as well. Really good pacing and doesn't beat around the bush, or try to be anything bigger than what is shown. I liked it a lot.

I'll peruse the thread and look for recommendations, because I've been wanting to watch more horror as well.

This isn't on Netflix, but Hounds of Love is an Australian horror/thriller from 2017. My fiancee and I watched it, feeling very hesitant going in because it felt like it might be a bit too torture porn-ish (we just watched The Eyes of My Mother, which was basically trash--we hated it). It does veer into that territory but also undermines it in a way and is a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. It centers around a man and his wife, who abduct young high school girls, assault them together, and then murder them.

Yes, we read that description and were kinda like "I don't really want to go there" but we enjoyed it more than we expected. It handles the relationship between the wife in the couple (who is basically psychologically and emotionally, abused by her husband, likely coerced by him into this behavior) and the victim in an interesting way. It's extremely damning of violent misogyny and toxic male behavior/relationship). There is the caveat of being prepared for some tough scenes. If you are worried about any triggering content, then:
there is a scene when the victim is almost assaulted when she's tied up in bed but she ends up, um, defecating and stalling in time for someone to arrive.

When the victim IS assaulted, it's behind closed doors. You don't see or hear anything. It makes it easier to sit through but we also appreciated the filmmakers not wanting to go there.

Ugh, I keep blindly watching movies on netflix thinking they should be good but they disappoint.

Just watched 'The Open House'. Up until the very end bit, the movie seems to be preparing something good for you.. Then it seemingly gives up and offers absolutely no payoff. It makes no sense. It's horrible.

So lately I've seen:

This is how it ends- starts swell enough, then you realize the main dude can't carry the film and it leaves you on a flat fart of an ending.

Extinction- this is a trash movie. A couple neat ideas in an overly long movie that could be edited down to a 22 minute twilight zone or outer limits.

Cargo- not awful, but not great. Sort of flounders all over the place and lots of 'oh come on' moments.

The Mansion- fucking trash. I somehow made it up until the guy shows up and got his legs chopped off, but really the beheaded dog and the guy hanging from the dick did it in. This is a crappy 'scary movie' knockoff. Just terrible.

Tusk- I was actually enjoying this up until it got too bizarre and disgusting. It was selling itself somewhat well as a real horror movie despite the comedy, so when things immediately escalated to.. You know.. I was really put off. Some funny stuff but it didn't mix well with the grotesque nature of how things quickly turned. Yuck.

Movies I actually liked well enough:

Tau (not brilliant but it was fine), and The Ritual, which really surprised me.

I had a much higher opinion on netflix originals before I stumbled into this pile of crappy movies. I might start checking themoviedb or imdb scores before starting whatever's next..

I didn't try it until after this thread started, but Shudder seems to have almost no real turkeys in its lineup. It's cheap, too.
