Chicago
Alright, let's do this thing. I'm a Chicagoan, so let me go into this just saying that I've got my own pizza biases coming into this discussion. In about a month, I'm taking my British wife to NYC for her first time. While there, I want to try the best of the best the Big Apple has to offer when it comes to pizza. Despite my love of Chicago Deep Dish, I'm going into this with an open heart and an open mind. Those giant ass grease slices that people fold up and shove in their mouths look great. However, it's always confusing where to go for a great slice, with Ray's Pizza, Famous Ray's, Original Ray's, Famous Original Ray's, Original Famous Ray's, and Sbarros.

So, New Yorkers (or frequent visitors), where do you suggest people go for a great slice of NY-style pizza? I want to share a slice of the best you have to offer with my immigrant wife. Let's do this.

When I was in New York the most disappointing pizza I had was Ray's. Don't @ me.

Juliana's pizza was heavenly. Roberta's Bee Sting pizza was also amazing, it's honey and chili on a Neapolitan pizza.

The best thing about these types of conversations is that in NY it comes down to 'a slice', like i'm not gonna devour an entire fuckin pizza. Pizzas by the slice are always warmed-over, burnt, rubbery, greasy. Gimme an entire pizza and then I'll judge.

I liked Archie's and Roberta's, both in Brooklyn. They are fancier than your average slice though.

I like Best Pizza in Williamsburg for a quick slice.

Apparently the best pizza is any dollar slice you can find that isn't surrounded with tourists. I tried it once, I was impressed.

prince street pizza always has a line out the door on the weekend, not sure if that's an indicator of quality or that it's just a tourist trap.

joe's pizza on carmine st. is similarly popular.

Found this pretty interesting, thoughts?

His top three are:
  • Best Pizza
  • New Park Pizza
  • Scarr's Pizza

B-Dubs

That's some catch, that catch-22

John's is pretty good, as is Joe's. There's like 12 of each, so take your pick.

Literally just go to any corner/neighborhood pizzeria. The "real" NYC slice isn't about waiting on lines.

If you want a sit down place and have a pie then I would say Grimaldi's, but again it's awful this time of year with the lines. Best bet is to go on a rainy day.

Real answers:

Joe's on Carmine
John's of Bleeker
L&B Spumoni Gardens
Difarra

Joe's is a simple take out round slice spot. It's my favorite in the city. There are a few locations now, but the one on Carmine is the best.

John's is a sit down restaurant, round pie. They don't do slices, and there will be a line. It's down the street from Joe's. Worth the wait for a table.

L&B is in a tough spot to get to, but has amazing square slices and delicious spumoni. Fun environment too. It's an adventure but fun if you're going to Coney Island or something nearby.

Difarra is the biggest pain but the best slice. Tough to get to, there is always a line, and they make pizzas one at a time so service is slow. But it's probably the most delicious of the 4 I listed.

Di Fara, but it's not consistent. You can walk away disappointed, or it's the most sublime slice. Their squares are pretty consistent though. I've been favoring those for awhile now. They're like a half-way between a grandma and a sicilian.

L&B if you want a sicilian. There's nothing better.

Singas, and not that bullshit franchise stuff either. I am talking about going down to 83rs and Whitney over in Elmhurst and getting it from the motherland. Or Elmhurst famous over on 43rd avenue between 74th and 75th street. Of course I may be a bit biased because I grew up on em before they became franchises, and J have nostalgia for their 90s era. Otherwise for something less biases, Corona Pizza and then some Lemon Ice King. Oh sweet baby jesus.

Shhh. NYC is only Brooklyn and Manhattan. They do not need to know about Broadway being a tour of the world.

Artichoke's for a good, deep gimmick slice that might remind you of Chicago pizza

Joe's Pizza on 14th & 3rd (?)

I reallly need to get to Difarra and L & B but I'm almost never in Brooklyn, and when I am neither of these places are convenient

Ah, we're gonna be hitting up Greenwich Village, so Joe's on Carmine's will be one of the places I hit for sure since I'll be in that area. I'll definitely grab a $1 slice somewhere too just to see (just like I'll be getting a NY dog off of a cart vendor). I'll go for a third pizza based off some of the other suggestions in this thread too. Still undecided on where.

14th is really good too. I used to live on 16th and 1st so I was at the 14th Street location all the time.

The one in Williamsburg is kinda disappointing.

So I went to NYC for the first time this year and I asked my brother and sis-in law who lived in Manhattan for 10 years what pizza should I get. Both told me I could find boutique stuff but just to skip it all and eat a Rays. I ate at a few Ray's locations and shit was good as fuck!

Broadway? Isn't that where all the theaters are?
*Wink wink*
No but seriously,I see so many new yorkers here but its all brooklyn and manhattan as you say. What the fuck guys, I was born and raised in Queens and sometimes I feel like because Manhattan was a weekend thing like I'm some kinda of outsider.

Sbarro is the wrong answer from here on out. Please don't give false testimony about it being in the tops in NYC for pizza.

Dude, pretty sure the motherland closed shop a while ago. I liked Singas growing up, but since the store closed it hasn't been the same. I'm actually best friends with one of the former owners of the 75th street store, we both agree it hasn't been the same, but thats because hes not cooking the pizza. I'd open a shop with him in a minute if he was really committed.

RedNalgene posted a good list, Joe's is the easiest in and out spot, pretty consistent too.

The best NYC pizza is Champion Pizza. Pound for pound it is literally the camp.

Location on 14th Street and 5th Avenue has the most space. If you want a heavenly artery killing combination go to the location on Cleveland Place then go right next door to Eileen's Cheesecake for an immaculate desert.

I've lived in NYC my entire life and have had pizza from all over this damn city. Amazing pizza has been had but I always get extremely irritated when people suggest that any local pizza shop is better than any chain alternative. No, this god damn isn't true. To even think that just because you're a "local joint" that your pizza is automatically good is dumb. Domino's is better than a lot of local crap, but pizza from one of the many great spots blows it out of the water. Please stop automatically suggesting that any local pizza shop is good. This is bullshit.

As for suggestions, I am awful at remembering the names of places I visit so I can't even point you to an actual location. My favorite spots are in the LES, around Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and near Coney Island. Never remember the names though.

Edit: Reading this thread reminded me of two of them that I do remember now: Grimaldi's and Juliana's. Both are BANG BANG.

I liked Paulie Gees in Greenpoint back when I used to live in the area

Here's a tip - the original Grimaldis in Dumbo is not owned by the Grimaldi family anymore. It was sold a while back and is now not as good, and is packed with tourists all the time. Juliana's right next to it is run by the original family and the pizza is amazing. Tourists go to Grimaldis, insiders go to Julianas.

Around my neighborhood, Pizza Palace over at Washington Heights/Inwood. Grew up on that pizza. Still one of my favs.

You can also check out Grimaldi's around Brooklyn Bridge. Another good pizza shop is Koronet Pizza by Columbia University...love ordering some Jumbo slices.

LOL. Dominoes stepped their game up tremendously when the US gov bailed them out with a new farmer/cheese connect within the last decade. Before that, any local joint was probably better than their old formula. They are a great choice too.

Yup, Julianas is the shit. I'd say its the best sit-down restaurant for pizza and my # 2.

Honestly, any random pizza joint will prob have a serviceable slice, but my choices for the best pizza in New York are di fara, roberta's, Pauline gee's, or l&b Spumoni gardens

As a non New Yorker Im confused. Isnt Sbarro new york style pizza? I dont know Ive only tried them at shopping malls.
yeah but its like getting a burger from McDonalds as opposed to all the other options. I loved Sbarro's in my youth but have only had it once after moving to NYC over a decade ago. Its good but there's better.
