The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, usually a staunch ally of the Republican party, is launching a campaign against President Donald Trump's recent trade tariff policies, Reuters reported Monday. With state-by-state analysis, the business lobbying giant argues the new tariffs risk a global trade war that will harm Americans.

"The administration is threatening to undermine the economic progress it worked so hard to achieve," said Chamber President Tom Donohue in a statement to Reuters. "We should seek free and fair trade, but this is just not the way to do it."

The chamber's three million members applauded Trump's business tax cuts in December, but the organization has distanced itself from the president since his call for new tariffs against China, Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. With data from the U.S. Department of Commerce and government agencies in the countries hit by the new tariffs, the chamber hopes to show the president that his trade war will hurt Americans—particularly those in states historically loyal to Trump.

Note that this is a business organization that is separate from the Department of Commerce. They are usually aligned with Republican politicians.

For fun, see how much of your states exports are affected:

Cali is pretty hurt but I was surprised how much stuff a lot of states sell to China.

Good. Every little bit helps.

Can't wait to see Trump attack a republican institution and call them left leaning losers or whatever lame ass nickname he comes up with.

This is going to be an interesting test. Does Trump still respect his peers in the industry, or has the Presidency made him think he's above these guys and he can treat them the same way he treats smaller contractors that he's stiffed, bullied or abused over the decades?

Can't wait to see Trump attack a republican institution and call them left leaning losers or whatever lame ass nickname he comes up with.

It would be hilarious if this pushes Trump supporters to embrace communism and socialism. "Only left leaning libtards are in it to make a profit! Real Americans let the government control capitalism and regulate corporate activities! I love communism and always have!"

considering that Alabama's economy is so much smaller than California and New York's 3.6 billion coming to the state i live in seems like a pretty heavy blow

Iowa almost $1 billion affected! Holy crap. That state went from being a decent purple/sometimes blue state to deep red in the past few election cycles. I hope this wakes some people up to the fact that the GOP is terrible and this administration is directly affecting their bottom lines.

I actually love how many of the reddest states are getting hit the worst. If this causes even a 1 or 2% movement in the polls, that could be monumental.

Wake up, your president hates and despises you. White, black, brown, straight, gay and anything else. if you aren't the .1% and in the business of actively praising him, you mean less than nothing to him.

That is not factoring in the potential of Trump issuing a 25% tariff on all auto imports and 10% tariff on 200 billion dollars worth of Chinese exports plus the retaliatory tariffs. Those tariffs are likely to come as well. The tariffs might not destroy the national economy, but it will severely harm local economies and negatively impact growth. Some companies are already saying that the tariffs are wiping out their tax cut gains.

I think probably a ton of people don't realize that the U.S. chamber of commerce is not a government agency. Not much of a "deep state" situation happening here. Just a lobbying group being peeved that their products are being affected.

Holy crap, I did not realize Washington sends about $4B of soybeans to China. That's 2/3rds of the entire $6B impact being forecasted.

"But if it weren't for the obstructionist Democrats stopping us from making progress, everything would have worked out fine!"

And like 40% (number is straight out of my arse) of people will buy that line.
Just needs to scrape off enough people in the right states to make the difference in outcomes. Trump's electoral victory was wide but the numbers were narrow.

A lot of people forget about eastern Washington, it's pretty much Idaho politically and economically.

Wait, I thought Trump voters were trying to avoid economic anxiety?

I think they may just be racist and stupid.

What economic progress did the Trump work so hard to achieve? Literally what has he done outside of pass those tax cuts that benefit predominantly rich/wealthy people to deserve such applause?

It's going to be fascinating to see whether a sense of self-preservation combined with being able to connect the dots makes some of the Trump supporters able to recover, or whether they are simply too racist and/or stupid to realize that voting Democrat could change this. If xenophobia is actually a stronger impulse than self-preservation, then it's basically confirmed that millions of Americans are suicidal fanatics.

$3.9 Billion from Texas.

Gonna enjoy seeing Beto win this November.

He probably won't, but he might. If he does, it won't be because Republicans were hit by tariffs and now want to vote for Beto. $3.9B is 1.4% of Texas' total exports, which is a big deal but also not enough to hit the small people hard, and that's who's voting for Trump in Texas.

It is less about what he has actually done and more about what people perceive. Some will give Trump credit even if he doesn't do anything just based on the fact that the economy is doing good. The other side is that since Trump is a businessman he must know what he is doing even if his actions goes against basic economics.

Simply put, people are really partisan and ignorant. The ones that know better just use Trump to push their agenda, or sometimes they go against him if he starts to hurt their own interests. That is why you see many business-minded GOP members being really against his trade policies.

Sucks for the poor who are affected in the red states, but then again those same poor fools usual vote against their own interest.

The problem that the business wing of the GOP has is this: Support for free trade and lower barriers is an economic metric for its supporters. Opposition to it, however, is not actually an economic concern for those opposed- it's a social one. The first group understand trade isn't zero sum. The latter sees business as zero-sum. The business wing has the first view, the actual base of the GOP the second.

Pretty much all of the border states are getting hit hard compared to their GDP... but over 10 billions between Washington and California alone means that it's far less targeted than a lot of people imply.

The next few years and the recession/depression that follows is going to be rough.

I've never, in my 35 years living in Canada, seen so many people dedicated to buying Canadian, or at the very least, not buying American. I'm not saying that what Trump is doing isn't going to hurt Canada in the long run, it will, but so long as it also cuts deep for Americans, there is some semblance of hope that these policies will get turned around once Trump and his yes-men are all in jail.

I think it's also important to not underestimate the impact trump's policies are having with regards to travel and hospitality industries in the US. I've gone down there every year from 2004-2016, at least once a year, and since trump took office, not a fucking chance. I can't imagine how hard places like Nevada, Florida, Arizona, etc, are going to get hit over the next couple years due to Canadians choosing to spend those winters somewhere in Canada....though we'll see, that's going to be a tough sell for some of the older people here.
