‘A Nice Guy, Everybody Loved Him’ With San Diego synagogue shooter, media once again normalize white male violence

Via FAIR:
After opening fire at worshipers celebrating the Jewish holiday of Passover at the Poway Synagogue near San Diego, California, 19-year-old John T. Earnest was arrested. Earnest killed one woman and injured three other worshippers before his semi-automatic weapon jammed and he fled the scene, calling 911 himself to report the shooting.

The shooter published an open letter online explaining that his actions were designed to defend the United States and preserve his race from “cultural Marxism,” an idea drawn from the Nazi term “cultural Bolshevism” and propagated by the likes of neo-Nazi mass murderer Anders Breivik and far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Earnest claimed to have been radicalized on online forums, and inspired by Christchurch shooter Brenton Tarrant and the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting of October 2018. He also took credit for a March 2019 arson attack at a nearby mosque as well.

Yet much of the media have taken pains to present him in a relatively positive light. In a widely republished article, the Associated Press(CBS, 4/30/19) presented him as a lover of music who was “a nice guy…. Everybody loved him,” according to one source, who said of his family, “They are outstanding. Some of the finest people I’ve ever met.”

The article insisted that he “counted Jews and black people among his friends,” as though to claim the Hitler-idolizing attacker of a mosque and a synagogue might not be a racist. It took pains to present him as a musical genius whose performances “drew audiences to their feet…. Crowds would be cheering his name.”

The original headline on the AP piece, reprinted by many outlets (e.g., MSN, 4/30/19) informed us Earnest was a “Star Scholar and Athlete.” Meanwhile, USA Today‘s headline (4/28/19) read, “California Synagogue Shooting: Suspect Known as Quiet, Smart While Authorities Question if He Was Hateful.”
Even though they want to take away your rights and want you dead, just remember they're only human. Just like you and me

That they've twisted the narrative to a confused young white man is somehow completely insane yet expected.

It's disgusting how they always manage to depict the hateful white terrorist who murders innocent people as the real victim.

The media has always been racist. Remember back during Katrina there was a picture that showed two different headlines, one was of a white couple that said they "Found supplies" while the other was a black guy that said he "Had stolen supplies". The media in general will always trip over themselves to make excuses for white people.

White men really playing the game on Easy mode.

I think the media really likes “hiding in plain sight” narratives like this because it seems ominous.
I think it's the opposite - it's reassuring to them. Headlines like this mean it's always something external to the young white men that triggers this change/danger. Now they can run in place trying to figure out what influenced him to go down the wrong path. Focus on everything else other than your own child.

Looting was the term used for the black man.

It really is such bullshit. As though people who commit violence are only obviously unhinged and rude. Not every mass murderer cleans his gun while defecating in people’s homes and discussing the list of people they’re eager to slaughter.

Some fuckin' people just can't say anything bad about horrible white people. It's like, if you confront them about it, they'd probably say, "No, uh, we called them out for being the horrible murderers they were!" then you look into their eyes and shout, "Then SAY IT!, muthafucker!", they'd be stuttering and trembling trying to get the cold truth out of their lips, but eventually resort to, "B-but, they were WHITE, so they can't all be bad people. There's some good in 'em...."

Fucks like them ain't no friend of anybody but white supremacy. They might not being marchin in the streets in white sheets, but they sure as HELL helpin' the cause and narrative.

The point is not that white people should be described as “terrorists,” “thugs” or other racialized words, but to underline the racial biases inherent in mainstream reporting, where corporate media promote sympathy for white mass killers while stoking suspicion, mistrust, or even hatred for black victims of violence.
I'd be pretty fine with white people who use violence and the fear of violence to promote political agendas being labelled as terrorists, honestly.

Fully agreed. This person isn't something to be pitied, he's something to be demonized.
Beyond the individual... How about we demonize racist, white supremacist, right wing, white culture?

Lol racist uncle.
Lol trumpist dad.
Lol grandpa watches fox news.

It's time to hold white culture accountable. This applies to everyone who gives a pass to racist friends and relatives.

It is, since that's what got us here. We've got some tools to do so, but do we have everything we need for it to work? Confronting people about their "politics" almost never works.

That's not at all intended to be a counterpoint to your statement. As someone with a few people in his life that are on the right (not alt-right, they're cut out, but definitely white culture), the challenge is getting it to stick.

Maybe it's not about just confronting and then letting it slide. Sometimes lines have to be drawn.

Aren't these just testimonies of poeple that knew him and not actually the articles painting him in a positive light? Because that always happens regardless of race. These sociopaths know how to fake being nice.

Imagine getting sympathy for being a mass murderer.
My grandma is like that, every time there's a big shooting she always says something like "the shooter is a victim here too, it could've been you if people treated you like monster".

Of course, if the shooter is Muslim she starts ranting about the "fucking sirios" and how they should ban that religion.

As long as you treat them as tragic victims who just snapped one day you label this as something that isn't preventable and therefore doesn't need to have action taken to fix it. It's such bullshit

I remember seeing a headline about the Christchurch shooter describing how he was an "angelic boy". Absolutely disgusting.

White guy - everyone loved him
Black guy - he smoked weed once
Hell, sometimes it goes like this:

White guy (that went on a killing spree) --- Once lend a wrench to his neighbor ---> "He was such a kind and thoughtful individual. Would lend you the shirt off his back if you needed it!"

Black guy (innocent and minding his own business --- Stubbed his toe and shouted "Mother FUCKER!" out of pain ---> "Has an angry and violent streak. Totally a thug!"

It's disgusting they do this.

Yes. Because only white people live in plain sight. Oh right. Only white sight counts.
I guess that's the de facto message it sends. The news media definitely provides a white-centric view.

It seemingly makes for a good story to paint violent murderers as integrated in their community but hiding in plain sight they are radicalized.
A Muslim terrorist isn't going to be hiding in plain sight to white people. Some large percentage of white people are likely to assume that any given Muslim is probably at the very least sympathetic to the terrorist cause.

Pretty sure the murderer answered that question himself when he started shooting people, and published an essay on the people he hated and why.

A black man got shot in his own home because a cop was drunk and went to the wrong door. They searched the victim's house for weed. Only in america

I cannot make this up but an attorney I knew lost his sister in this shooting, she was the one victim.

He's a huge Trump supporter and I thought that surely SURELY this may at least have him question his allegiance to him.

Cue yesterday when he released a Op-Ed he wrote for Breitbart DEFENDING TRUMP!

There's no getting through to these people. Just absolutely no way.

It infuriates me to no end when they do this like fuck right off with that rancid bullshit. Present them as the vile shit stains they are instead of being some kind of sympathetic figure, it’s just so fucked up that the media does this almost every single time.

Wierd, I don't remember ISIS guys being so nice and kind. Maybe they didn't like music, that must be the reason.
