Marvel's first black superhero film Black Panther made a strong debut in China, taking in more than $63 million this weekend and helping it cross the billion-dollar mark globally. And while the film filled seats in China, it didn't exactly bring in rave reviews from Chinese audiences—in fact, online reviews hint at subtle racism and discomfort with the all-black cast.

Some moviegoers disliked Black Pantherbecause they felt Marvel was trying too hard to be politically correct (link in Chinese). While many reviewers on Douban stopped short of leaving overtly racist comments about the film, many discussed their discomfort of being surrounded by so much blackness.

Another reviewer who came into the theater late made a similar observation: "When I entered the theater, a bunch of black people was fighting in the night… I've never been in a theater so dark that I couldn't find my seat."

I can't help to think of the corner store scene in "Don't be a menace in south central while drinking your juice in the hood"

The opening night fight scene was a pretty terrible setpiece, putting aside the reviewer's shameful racism. At least in our theater, you couldn't see anything happening.

Having read the "most helpful" reviews on IMDb, I'm not surprised that this is a thing anywhere. Why is it that so many people have a problem with this?! Can't they just see past this racial biology bullshit and enjoy it for what it is?!

The movie was way too dark though. Specifically the jungle scene and the casino scene. Could barely tell what was going on when they started fighting.

Not sure if my theatre was fucked, or it was a combination of black costumes and low lighting.

Every other scene was fine though.

Not in the least bit surprised...have a feeling that it won't have the legs in China versus other MCU films...

Expected. This is one of the reasons so many thought the movie would be "risky" to make. They knew exactly which countries and regions wouldnt take kindly to the cast and overall feel of the movie.

I'm surprised they didn't add a token Chinese actor.

Yikes, that's pretty bad :/

It was a cool scene but was dark as fuck, I was at the Alamo Drafthouse and had problems eating my salad lol

I think I had a similar experience, particularly with the jungle scene. Was pretty disorienting.

This movie made a shit-ton of money in China. Has overall positive reviews. So a number of racially intensive comments online are now the whole of "Chinese moviegoers?"

Yes, there's something to the racist comments but extending this out to "chinese moviegoers" is a bit, idk racist in its own right

It made $63 million, I think we can filter out the 'comedic' hot takes just as easily from overseas as we do here.

Yeah it made $66 million and debuted at the top of the box office. Considering China also has its own film industry, that's fine. I'm sure other countries react to blackness with disgust as well because of the Anglo imperialist agenda. Don't lose the plot

A stark difference compared to the "What do Chinese People think of Black Panther" video that is in the "What do Koreans think of Black Panther" thread. Unfortunately this doesn't feel like a big surprise that there are people who feel this way and make those comments

I saw the movie in Korea, and from what I've seen Koreans really enjoyed the movie. Was honestly expecting this thread to be about this, that first scene was literally too black, it was just not good.
