Perhaps, but it wouldn't do us much good in the long run. It could help to make the U.S. worried about Chinese influence and counter them with more investment in Mexico, which isn't far from what the Mexican government is doing in the NAFTA negotiations, probably.
It would take years and decades for Mexico to stop depending on the U.S. for exports and imports and even then, there's not other feasible partner to replace them with. The most Mexico can do is diversify their trade partners, like maybe 20% European Union, then another 15% Asia, 15% South America? and then 40% U.S. and Canada (with Canada representing a small part of that).
A big chunk of our "trade" with the U.S. is simply all of the economic activity that happens along the border, between Mexicans and U.S. citizens living there or remittances from Mexicans in the U.S.
If the man wasn't so stupid, I would say he was going out of his way to target his people

Do those farmers know China buys their pork? Or do they just assume it's all Americans that are buying it? Do they even know their pork may be purchased by other countries?

You have it backwards. They’d add the tariff to pork imported from the United States.
Sadly, it seems more like propaganda. Start a trade war and when others react point the fingers at their reaction and drum applause by the base. Creating an enemy more vicious that presided before.
You can't just demand immediate payment on bonds. There's a fixed schedule on interest payments and when it will be payed back.
Nah should be cheaper for us since there should be a surplus since they won't sell as much in China. We'll win the people selling the pork'll lose.

Add this to the drop in agricultural workers due to the crackdown on immigration, people are going to get an Econ 101 lesson on supply & demand and how prices fluctuate due to it. Trump is shooting himself in the foot with these tariffs, and both his base and administration, has no ability to critically think long-term about his actions
Well, it's not as cut and dry, since the Chinese likes to import what you consider waste products: organs, ear, snout, feet. You're right that the pig farmers will lose the most from this though.
That's not how this works. They're not going to flood the market with pork to drive the price down on their own. They cut back production, which means less labor, which means fewer jobs.
Wait, I know US don't eat those parts but they just let it go to waste? I actually though that they will be turned into meat paste or something.
Also just realised that prices will likily drop for others countries due to oversupply, guess I will have cheaper bacon soon.

none of that stuff goes to waste but china was buying in big numbers which allowed them to raise prices. if china drops out they will have to lower the prices and make less money off of each pig now.

Granted, the parts hit hardest are the redder parts of the state, so this is still just, but man, this won't help the budget crisis.
Getting in a trade war against the country that also is directly responsible for financing and investing and paying those workers to make that shit can also go wrong for them. What I don't get is how anyone is thinking the US as still the de facto largest world economy and with the largest corporations would lose in a trade war with China. Apple can go and get Vietnam and India and Mexico to make iPhones. Can China survive without US direct investment etc. Can they survive countries like Japan and South Korea who can't risk losing the US market abandoning China. For a lot of countries China is a bigger trade partner than the US. But that is why this is a lose lose scenario. Both China and the US will create trade war and recession but China is far more vulnerable here especially if the US plays some shenanigans with their dollar which China holds a lot of as foreign reserves.

Chinese tariffs are just going to be more effective than Trump's because they are carefully weighed out and are designed to hit Trump where it hurts politically. This is something that Trump's administration is incapable of doing so while both sides are going to hurt, it's going to be more painful for one of them.
Nothing works the way it's posited in this post. China has had expensive labor over tons of other countries in the region for a long time now. The reason the production stays there is because either the supply chain is there or that's where a huge portion of the end customers or both.
