Question: A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is very inexpensive, so the barrier to entry feels low, but on the other hand the content of the service still feels rather weak. How will you enhance the service going forward?
Furukawa: The number of subscribers for Nintendo Switch Online has increased steadily since the service was launched last September, and it has now surpassed 10 million accounts. Nintendo Switch Online provides users the ability to play Nintendo Switch games over the internet, both competitively and cooperatively. It also provides services such as Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online, Save Data Cloud Backup, and smartphone application services such as online lobbies and voice chat. In addition, we provided TETRIS 99 as a special offer to Nintendo Switch Online members this February, and then in May, began selling Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers that allow users to purchase two Nintendo Switch download titles at a discount. We recognize that making the Nintendo Switch Online service attractive to users is extremely important, and will continue to make the content of the service even more appealing going forward.

This is why companies charge online memberships.

I hope they increase the offerings and improve infrastructure soon.

man it's crazy to me how the app basically ended up being worthless, maybe now with all this money coming in from subs they can make an actual online service?

i really hope they do more stuff like tetris 99, and hopefully launch snesflix in september. i don't play online much (although i guess i will use the online a lot in mario maker 2), for me it's the extra stuff that could make the service really appealing.
the voucher system seems neat too but for some reason they're only running it until the end of july, seems like something that should be available all year round.

I feel like it's a moot point considering they gave away a year of NSO from Twitch, though there's no official numbers on how many people took advantage of that.

We've been happy subscribers. No interest in Tetris though. Hopefully the SNES gets added by year's end.

Good for Nintendo !

To put a context to that number, there were 10.8m PS+ subscribers when PS4 shipped 19.9m PS4 (18.5m sold-through)

Adding in other retro titles, like SNES and N64 games, deeper sales for NSO members, as well as more stuff like Tetris 99 would go a long way to making the service actually worth it. I personally don't really care much for most of the benefits you get from these online subscriptions as they rarely interest me and I find the idea of having to pay to use a critical feature in a game to be pretty shitty but at least MS and Sony do something more with their service to worth it for their fans, albeit they also charge 3 times more

I wonder what Nintendo's going to do with all that money?

If all of those are yearly subscribers (which is impossible) then they gained 200m.

it is not that much, at least compared to how much money their competitors are making.

honestly? the implementation of NSO was Nintendo's crucial mistake with the Switch platform, and i think it is a big reason why many popular multiplayers titles didn't make the jump to the system up to this point (like Overwatch, CoD, PUBG etc...).

also, the value proposition is very weak even for this little money. there is no reason why they are not adding SNES and 64 games already when the system is in its strongest selling years. what is the point if they are released when people move away from the system? they can also charge more money when they add those.

There was already subscribers from PS3 and Vita.

Last figures for PSN Plus were something like 35m subscribers on a userbase of >90m so the ratio is probably roughly similar.

So Nintendo get about 200m dollars a year and for that we get a few NES ROMs and the ability to use our own internet to connect to other people

Is Nintendo just sitting on huge updates that they haven't fully tested / released yet for their online service or is this literally it? No app functionality for Mario Maker 2 is such a missed opportunity. No SNES games. No themes.

Maybe they charged too little for the service. Not much incentive to put a ton of resources into it.

200m is an obscene amount for what their online infrastructure must look like currently... isn't most of their games Peer2peer? It's a total joke.

Nintendo launched NSO way after the systems release date. PS+ also launched before PS4 released and already had base from PS3/Vita. A better relation would be the number of new subscribers that were added upon PS4's release

i assume if they have something big they'll reveal it in september to get the people who subbed for a year when NSO launched to re-sub.

It's a lot of money but not enough to make them dump their entire back catalog on to the service to entice subs. No doubt they will raise the price as they add features.

Nice, I hope they add more than just NES games to the library. Not gonna lie, vastly disappointed in the way that aspect is being treated. I expected them to add more systems by now since we are 2 and half years in. Where is SNES, Gameboy, GBA?

As much as I disliked the Wii U at least it was a decent way to play their classic games. It's a shame because the portable nature of the Switch makes it the best possible place to play these type of games... If they were on the system.

accounts might be the key word, i really doubt there is 10 million active subs, it's really not worth paying for Smash's online at the moment for me anyway. many of my friends it was the same deal, subbed for smash, online was laggy & they didn't keep up the sub.

$1.67 a month, that's literally next to nothing.

it's clear that in nintendo's view, "their entire back catalog" is worth WAY more than just 20 bucks a year.

For sure and they'd be right. They would be dumping money down the drain putting SNES, GB, N64, etc games on a service that's less than $2 a month. My guess is with each system comes an additional upcharge on the online service.

NSO launched less than a year ago tho, retro games being offered to subscribers wasn't a thing when the system launched.
I know but I am looking at this from the perspective of someone who expected VC on the console. Sure, NSO hasn't been out that long but I have been waiting for their classic games plan since I bought the thing at launch. If this is their answer then I am disappointed with the wait and I am even more disappointed at how slow the output is.

Maybe even less considering the Family Plans, my sister and I don't pay for it since we're on someone else's plan.

Yeah, it will probably be less, but even so considering they have been given probably over 100m for basically a few NES ROMs it's still taking money for nothing

And it's probably going to increase in terms of subs as the years go on, so give it 5 years and it will probably be a billion dollars and they'll have maybe added some SNES games

Either way you look at it, it's a joke

I'd imagine most would have an account on the system and there's well over 30 million Switch's sold. Not to mention, this is within the context of their online subscription and $20 a year isn't really asking much from most folk so, even if you're not really playing online, a lot of folk just went with it, myself included

People want SNES games, but I really want GBA games next. I could see them launching such a service with Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald.

i assume many people didn't pay 20 bucks anyway. there's the twitch/amazong prime deal, and with a family plan you can get it for way cheaper. i personally got it with 7 other people and paid 4 bucks for a whole year.

True, 3 months for my group of friends seemed to be the popular choice, anecdotal of course.

I have it for cloud saves, and vouchers. SNES games would be nice though so I can have essentially the entire FF collection
