Yeah, the people on the first page saying they look happy and not malnourished must not have realized their 20-30 years old, not 10.
I know not every religious person is like this but it seems like every story like this involves religion. Basically, fuck religion.
early on in this thread people brought up the Fritzl case, and that wasn't religiously motivated I don't think, the guy was just fucking evil
I'm sure there are really dumb people who DON'T do things like these because they are afraid of God. I'm choosing to stay optimistic and not generalize.

My girldfriend's a psychologist, and had to look after a kid who was 10/11 but looked about 5 because trauma had stunted his development so badly.
The mother apparently ran off to marry Turpin when she was 16, he's been an engineer at a defense contractor but likely indicates that he kept the kids inside out of religious reasons. (He at least said they had that many because God told them to.)
I sincerely didn't mean to generalize. I have friends who I consider best friends who are religious. I just feel like every time something of this nature happens religion is involved to some extent. But honestly this situation is terrible and horrific across the board regardless of motivations and I don't wanna seem to derail discussion when the only concern should be those involved, I apologize.

In trying to figure out how long these conditions have been going on it would seem it was happening in fort worth, tx as well. So bare minimum 4 years but obviously probably longer, I almost don't wanna know.
I'm sure this is a nightmare for all of the children, but I'd imagine it will be especially traumatic for the youngest ones. They may not yet be aware that their lives were seriously abnormal, and may be wondering why their older sibling ruined their family and got them taken from their parents. I really hope there is not resentment on top of all of the other emotional and psychological trauma they're dealing with.
Just saw in Jornal Nacional (biggest brazilian news) that the parents pleaded Not Guilty. Fucking assholes monsters, even after everything, they still think they did nothing wrong. They deserve everything that happens from now. Hope they suffer so much rotting in prison.
If I were a betting man I'd say they are already planning on representing themselves.

Some of the details makes me think that it was a cult they created, and they were probably just going to keep going had they not be exposed.
I know people get emotional and just say things that don't make sense sometimes, but it's hard to tell for sure with horrible incidents like this. A maternal aunt claimed she wanted to Skype with the family for "over 20 years" - that would mean before Skype was even around, but she could've just been having an emotional breakdown

My guess is that it's easier to start a cult with people who have no choice to, then to try to recruit to start one.
