Before we jump to nuclear disaster, there's a lot of stuff to go wrong on a submarine. A fire could be started by anything from bad batteries to the kitchen.

That's tough. So many things can go wrong in a sub, and a pick of water, fire, and the nuclear core?

Emergency surfacing/blow failure?

Edit - looks like it was contained to a compartment maybe?

The sub is back at a port according to the article.

That's sad for the sailors and their families.

Glad it wasn't a Lovecraft situation.

(I would be terrified to be in a sub. Sea monsters are real.)

Glad it wasn't a repeat of the Kursk submarine disaster, at least. May they rest in peace.

Is this why Pence was suddenly called back the White House this morning?

"Today we are escorting the crew of a research deep-water apparatus, who died while performing a combat mission in the cold waters of the Barents Sea. 14 dead, 14 lives. At the cost of their lives, they saved the lives of their comrades, saved the ship, did not allow a planetary catastrophe, "said one of the high-ranking military at the closed funeral of submariners, reports the Open Media correspondent from the mourning event.

Errr.

off course I'm. :P
Just saying that I think it would be bigger news, but guess I might be in the minority on this.

I heard about it yesterday on the news. I think every time people hear "nuclear", they enter a state of panic that is not always justified. As for this case, I'm not an expert, so I don't know. Sad thing what happened to these men. These machines of destruction should ideally not exist anyway.

A nuclear sub being sunk isn't nearly as big as Chernobyl.

There are currently over 8 nuclear subs that are laying on the bottom of the ocean with the reactors in them.

The cooling of the water and dilution of the ocean makes it fairly benign, they aren't going to go critical and what leaks out will be highly diluted by the ocean.

People at the beach better watch out, they might accidentally swallow gamma particles in the water.

RIP to the sailors, I can't think of many worse ways to go.

Came here to post this like WTF why is this not bigger news?

Seriously This could have been Chernobyl x 10 on sea.
Insane.
I suspect the PR team wanted something that sounded better than "These 14 unfortunate souls died in vain on a poorly made ship meant to maintain the illusion that Russia is more than a failed state."

Reading that article, does Russia suffer from an unusually high amount of accidental military deaths?

RIP to the sailors. Being on a submarine is one of the most dangerous and hardest jobs there is and I have tremendous respect for those that put their lives on the line in that way.
