... I still can't get over how Americans like to eat Corn dogs, Mac and Cheese and drink Dr Pepper.

In my first week of High School in the United States I was served Corn dogs and Mac and Cheese and was the most disgusting shit I had ever eaten and then I went and tried Dr Pepper and almost threw up.

For reference I never new Corn dogs were a thing, I had only seen Mac and Cheese on Movies and Dr Pepper wasn't available in Venezuela when I lived there.

Those were my main culture shocks

You can go anywhere new and not be accustomed to the food. I've gone places where I was not used to certain food quirks either. With some things you have to grow up with it.

I can agree to the corn dog issue - I never liked them and I never quite "got" the idea of eating any type of hot dogs, to be frank (pun intended).
Macaroni and Cheese is probably my favorite thing ever, though. Though I'm a snob about it and expect decent cheeses to be used (not something like Velveta or "American Cheese") and pasta made fresh.

Reminds me of the video where an American offers two kids a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and they gave a look of disgust. Then turned around and ate roasted tarantula like it was fine dining. It's about what you're raised on.

20 years ago I moved to America and was heartbroken to found out that this delicious looking thing:

tasted like dookie.

I didn't even know what "corn dog" was, so I had to Google it, and it looks disgusting indeed.

A corn dog is just a deep fried arepa with meat in the middle

I used to love Dr. Pepper, as well, but I kind of stopped drinking it when I discovered Dr. Pepper Cherry. I have to say that Dr. Pepper is perhaps the only soda I've ever had for which the "Diet" variety tastes as good as the original. That said, I really don't think soda very often anymore, as I prefer flavored water and unsweetened almond milk.

I'm not even american, but on behalf of their school cafeterias I'm so sorry they gave you a Mac and Cheese so awful that made you think it's disgusting...

I had some Mac & Cheese balls in London once and I'd kill to be able to taste them again :(

I'm sure every culture has their own form of garbage food.

Dr Pepper is meh, corn dogs are meh, and mac & cheese is straight up trash despite what anyone tells me. Blue box or homemade, it's still noodles and cheese slopped together in unholy unison.

Also, I don't understand why mac and cheese would be so strange. It's such a basic dish. It's noodles and cheese, unless you had a bunch of different stuff added to it.

Quality Mac n' Cheese is amazing. Annie's Shells, homemade from scratch, etc is heaven on earth. Lots of industrial grade Mac n' Cheese like Velveeta or Kraft and stuf you get at schools, fast food places, etc is fucking gross.

Dr. Pepper and Corn Dogs are always gross and should be outlawed.

Corn dogs are gross because the flavor of the stick permeates the hot dog so after the first couple of bites it just tastes like you're eating wood shavings.

I was born in the US and grew up eating like trash, but I got healthier and healthier as an adult. Well I went over to a friend from back in the day's house for dinner last week, and it was so bad that afterwards I threw up worse than I have in ages. Thank god I already left his house lol, I didn't want to insult him or his wife, but god damn it was bad. This same friend was raised primarily eating at 7-11...

So for folks who never went to school in the U.S. (not OP, obviously), in pretty much any public school, the lunches served are bottom-barrel in terms of quality. It's meant to be purchased in bulk, preserved for a LONG time to maintain cost efficiency, and look/weigh identical so that it can be priced correctly. It's all mega-processed.

The insane thing is that a lot of high schools will actually *simultaneously* contract out to fast food companies to set up a presence for kids who can afford to drop $7 a day on lunch. My high school courtyard had Papa John's, Subway, and Dunkin *FUCKING* Donuts. The state of nutrition in U.S. schools are absolutely atrocious.

I will brook no slight against culinary masterpiece Corn Dog, it is perhaps best food? Succulent corn cake swaddling fine pork product, splendid and comforting meal or hors doeuvre

Not liking corn dogs is one thing. Not likeing mac and cheese is staunchly anti-American.

21 years ago I moved from Venezuela to the states. I FUCKING LOVE CORN DOGS AND MAC AND CHEESE AND DOCTOR PEPPER.

It's not a decent replacement for ready access to empanadas and Cocosettes and tequeños and Frescolita... but I make do.

Fuck now I'm just hungry for Venezuelan cuisine though.

Good Mac & Cheese is fantastic. I enjoy a good corndog but mustard makes me want to puke. I used to love Dr. Pepper, but now its all about water and the occasional diet soda.

I haven't eaten a corn dog in iike...20 years. I also don't get the appeal. It's trash tier food.

There are also different tiers of mac and cheese. There's the basic velveeta/kraft processed garbage which is gross and I'm guessing is what you had. Then there's mac and cheese made with high quality gruyere/cheddar/whatever other awesome cheese. Mix that with some bacon, some panko bread crumbs, maybe a little truffle oil. Bake it so the tops are a bit crispy/brown. That's where it's at.

My buddy's wedding reception actually had a mac and cheese bar and it was amazing.

I remember when I was a kid some UK food brand advertised on TV that they were bringing Corn Dogs to the UK. Everyone in my circle of stupid kids was excited.

They were foul and disgusting and withdrawn from sale immediately.

That being said, I can't imagine mass-produced frozen and then oven-baked corn-dogs are the best version of the US classic so I'll reserve judgement.
