Updated | A 2-year-old child killed his 1-year-old brother in an accidental shooting after finding his parents' loaded 9 mm pistol left out in their bedroom on Monday afternoon in Mobile, Alabama. That tragedy marked the 123 child under the age of 11 killed or wounded in gunfire since January 1, according to GunViolenceArchive.org, which tracks shootings. It was also the second fatal shooting of a child shooting of that day.

Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste told reporters outside the children's home Monday afternoon that the siblings were together in their parents bedroom when the toddler apparently discovered the handgun. Their mother had just walked out to an in-law unit in the rear of the home to let the boys' grandmother know she was about to leave.

Horrifying. No words really. The kid is blameless, who the fuck leaves a loaded gun lying around with tiny unsupervised children. My heart goes out to all involved though, I don't know how any of them recover from something like this.

Jeez America is fucked...123 children killed by guns this year alone. This country is becoming a sad joke. It's barbaric.

Parents should be charged for murder. They want guns, they should take the responsibility and punishment as well.

So tired of news like this. I wish this country would get their act together and ban handguns and assault rifles for most civilians. Need something to defend your house? Get a regular shotgun, and get licensed to use it and have it locked up. Hand guns are way too prone to accidents like this, and have no use but to kill other humans.

How irresponsible must one be in order to leave their gun in a place where a toddler can get it. That thing should be locked away and unloaded.

I feel bad for that kid when he grows up, learning he killed someone and he won't even remember doing it. Keeping guns out of the hands of children it seems so obvious. Yet so many people dont even thing to make sure to do that.

Too much of this country simply does not respect firearms.

People leave loaded firearms around the house without a second thought. If your weapon is out of it's case, the location of that weapon needs to be an ever persistent thought.

This wouldn't have happened if that 1 year old had a gun to defend himself. /s

In all seriousness though what a tragedy. Such a senseless death and for what? Because the parents couldn't handle responsible gun ownership. And that's the thing...the gun should have been locked up and out of reach, but that doesn't really help the keeping a weapon for defense argument then. You'd never get to it by time you need it.

People are better off without guns altogether.

Even for pro-gunners, this should be considered a crime, right? You cannot leave unattended a gun, specially one already loaded.

So how many gun shootings were done by the "good guys" to "prevent" death, compared to the number of gun accidents? Are they still using that argument?

Parents should be charged for murder. They want guns, they should take the responsibility and punishment as well.

100% the parents fault and they should be in jail and their remaining child should be taken away/cared for by someone who's not a complete idiot.

Who TF leaves a loaded gun out where children can get to it? Or leaves a loaded gun out at all.

Ugh. Can you imagine having to deal with this as their parent? How could you possibly live with yourself? Assuming you're not a deadbeat piece of garbage human being.

Parents should absolutely be charged for this.

If you're going to do something absolutely moronic, pay for your actions.

123? Fucking hell, ban guns already.
That's ridiculous.

All my firearms are secured and are never left unattended, regardless of whether there is a child at the house or not. Unfortunately, there are too many cases where a parent or relative left a loaded, unsecured firearm in places a child can access. You can, depending on the state of course, charge the parents with child endangerment or more.
