2018-19 Season TV Cancellations/Pilots: Perfectionist Horseman commits perjury, held In Contempt

I can't say I'll miss it - after 3 seasons they've failed to endow the show with any real sense of identity or purpose. It's basically "generic white comedian guy trying to make it in comedy", which has been done to death by this point. Here's hoping they replace it with something more unique.
Yep. Another mediocre HBO "comedy" gone won't bother me at all.
One very interesting fact from the articles I linked a couple of days ago. 40% of HBO customers ONLY watch the licensed movies. Considering they're presumably going to lose all but the Warner's movies over the next 3-4 years that's quite the threat to "the HBO way".
Thursday night's ratings. Superstore came back a little stronger from its last episode all the way back in December. A.P. Bio came back okay--in line with about how it did last year--but it was the least watched show on NBC last night, and that includes that rerun of SVU:
No reason is given. He just says HBO didn't want them to make any more episodes. It's basically a moment to joke with Conan.
He mentions a potential movie to be in the cards, but I bet that will not happen.
Ouch @ NBC's lineup. Now they're in a weird position with AP Bio. Like...did they expect it to grow? Does it do gangbusters on streaming or something?
I usually lurk the thread, but came upon a depressing cancellation story about one my favorite recent sci-fi shows, "Dark Matter". Someone in the show's subreddit a made thread asking why the show got canned and the creator gave rundown of what happened.

I always wondered why the show got cancelled because it seemed pretty popular by SyFy standards, but for it to go out like that is frustrating to see.

It irritates me too. Especially because I had a five season plan going in complete with character and story arcs (which is why we were always able to set-up and pay off so much as the show went along). But, since you asked, this is what went down...
When we were first pitching the show, the pilot script went to Syfy's Acquisition division in New York. They picked up the show. But as it turns out, the script had also been sent to Syfy's Originals division in L.A. - who hated it and passed. And when they found out that the Acquisitions department in NY had picked up a project they had passed on, I heard they were decidedly Unhappy.
Then the show premiered and outperformed most of their originals. Which, from what I heard, really didn't sit well with Syfy L.A.
Fast-forward three years later and our point person in New York left to go to Netflix. As a result, we didn't have a champion in our corner anymore. Even though we were the network's third-most watched show, I heard that not one executive stepped up for us. And, well, Syfy L.A. were never really fans - so we were cancelled. Without so much as a press release or a thank you. We went back at them and asked for the opportunity to offer fans a conclusion, even simply in the form of a two hour movie. They never even answered the email.

JustAnotherMike We enjoyed Dark Matter a lot too. It's much better than SyFy's Killjoys which is still going. I had read at the time that Dark Matter had the problem of not being one of SyFy's own shows, which means higher costs, more restrictions on distribution rights, etc., which is why Killjoys is still running and Dark Matter isn't.
Anyway, The Expanse and Altered Carbon crush both shows, and SyFy's 12 Monkeys was also better, and going back a few years the BSG remake too. If you haven't tried those, check them out.

Wow... that sounds really shitty. It sounds like the show was doing fine for them. I'm confused why it would be canned after so long when it was proven to be a good show for them. Was it too expensive or was the LA team really that unhappy with it that they took their first chance to toss it.
Probably some of both. It might have been 3rd most watched, but that doesn't need it was the 3rd best money maker.

Yea, I've watched all those except for 12 monkeys. I usually picked up Syfy shows when they hit netflix, but switched to live viewing when I got PS Vue a couple of years ago.
I figured money played a part in it, but based on what the guy said egos may have been bruised. I couldn't even tell you what was #1 or #2 was show around that time. I'm guessing The Magicians was one of them.

Yeah, another show to toss into the pile of "shows ending in 2019" hill. This one had it's run, for sure.

That sounds good and completely unexciting at the same time. I've never heard of the concept, but I feel like I've heard it 1000 times. Am I the only one with that vibe?

Yeesh @ that Dark Matter story. Joseph Mallozzi has really gotten the short end of the stick a few times in the decade since Stargate SG-1 ended. Atlantis cancelled with a planned TV movie he wrote but never got to film, Universe cancelled unceremoniously, and now this.

A great show, but clearly not worth the headache for Showtime.
Damn so many shows I watch are ending this year. I never knew life could be this wonderful.
I watched the first episode and it's like a D-tier the Magicians lol. Will give it more of a chance before I give up though.
Hope they can match the first season. Definitely looks promising, hopefully I can get a free month and binge it.
Not just that, but it's also been really boring and unfunny this season.
It was quite a bit better than Crashing, but this is another one that I won't miss much. 2 seasons is enough for the type of stories Shaw was interested in telling with these characters. (and obviously the bts stuff was a mess)
That just leaves Kidding, Our Cartoon President (why), and Black Monday as their remaining half hours.

It looks like Marti Noxon and Gillian Flynn are mulling another season of Sharp Objects, presumably without Amy Adams, even though it was a miniseries that ended perfectly and really doesn't need another season:
