Just heard Arrow cancellation, guess I have to watch the last 3 seasons now...urghhh.

Thread title should've been "You have failed CW TV".

Judd Apatow announces that "Crashing" is basically cancelled.

I can't say I'll miss it - after 3 seasons they've failed to endow the show with any real sense of identity or purpose. It's basically "generic white comedian guy trying to make it in comedy", which has been done to death by this point. Here's hoping they replace it with something more unique.

Yep. Another mediocre HBO "comedy" gone won't bother me at all.

I've been saying for ages they needed to get with the times. Nevermind controlling the actual interface building in house (which the article states they're only now finally doing) but having 4k content, a service that doesn't constantly freeze or stutter, etc. It's an elegant layout but the actual product doesn't make it through half the time. I rewatched Band of Brothers last month and it was blurry lo-res through half the episodes. Meanwhile on my same connection I can stream UHD on Vudu or 4K through Netflix without a hitch

All this is separate from their actual creative content which I still hold in very high esteem. Hopefully AT&T doesn't rock the boat too much there

One very interesting fact from the articles I linked a couple of days ago. 40% of HBO customers ONLY watch the licensed movies. Considering they're presumably going to lose all but the Warner's movies over the next 3-4 years that's quite the threat to "the HBO way".

Thursday night's ratings. Superstore came back a little stronger from its last episode all the way back in December. A.P. Bio came back okay--in line with about how it did last year--but it was the least watched show on NBC last night, and that includes that rerun of SVU:

Ouch @ NBC's lineup. Now they're in a weird position with AP Bio. Like...did they expect it to grow? Does it do gangbusters on streaming or something?

I usually lurk the thread, but came upon a depressing cancellation story about one my favorite recent sci-fi shows, "Dark Matter". Someone in the show's subreddit a made thread asking why the show got canned and the creator gave rundown of what happened.

It irritates me too. Especially because I had a five season plan going in complete with character and story arcs (which is why we were always able to set-up and pay off so much as the show went along). But, since you asked, this is what went down...

When we were first pitching the show, the pilot script went to Syfy's Acquisition division in New York. They picked up the show. But as it turns out, the script had also been sent to Syfy's Originals division in L.A. - who hated it and passed. And when they found out that the Acquisitions department in NY had picked up a project they had passed on, I heard they were decidedly Unhappy.

Then the show premiered and outperformed most of their originals. Which, from what I heard, really didn't sit well with Syfy L.A.

Fast-forward three years later and our point person in New York left to go to Netflix. As a result, we didn't have a champion in our corner anymore. Even though we were the network's third-most watched show, I heard that not one executive stepped up for us. And, well, Syfy L.A. were never really fans - so we were cancelled. Without so much as a press release or a thank you. We went back at them and asked for the opportunity to offer fans a conclusion, even simply in the form of a two hour movie. They never even answered the email.

I always wondered why the show got cancelled because it seemed pretty popular by SyFy standards, but for it to go out like that is frustrating to see.

JustAnotherMike We enjoyed Dark Matter a lot too. It's much better than SyFy's Killjoys which is still going. I had read at the time that Dark Matter had the problem of not being one of SyFy's own shows, which means higher costs, more restrictions on distribution rights, etc., which is why Killjoys is still running and Dark Matter isn't.

Anyway, The Expanse and Altered Carbon crush both shows, and SyFy's 12 Monkeys was also better, and going back a few years the BSG remake too. If you haven't tried those, check them out.

Wow... that sounds really shitty. It sounds like the show was doing fine for them. I'm confused why it would be canned after so long when it was proven to be a good show for them. Was it too expensive or was the LA team really that unhappy with it that they took their first chance to toss it.

Probably some of both. It might have been 3rd most watched, but that doesn't need it was the 3rd best money maker.

Yea, I've watched all those except for 12 monkeys. I usually picked up Syfy shows when they hit netflix, but switched to live viewing when I got PS Vue a couple of years ago.

I figured money played a part in it, but based on what the guy said egos may have been bruised. I couldn't even tell you what was #1 or #2 was show around that time. I'm guessing The Magicians was one of them.

Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman's Quibi, that totally won't fail like every other mobile first OTT, Orders Series Based on Snapchat's Rise
The project is based on Frat Boy Genius, a feature film screenplay by Elissa Karasik, whose dark, funny take on the story behind the social-media platform landed at No. 1 on the 2018 Black List. Like a Social Network 2.0, the script, as the title suggests, presents a deeply unflattering portrayal of Evan Spiegel, the app's 28-year-old founder.

'Port Of Earth': Amazon & Skybound Developing Top Cow's Gritty Sci-Fi Epic
Skybound Entertainment is developing the sci-fi property Port of Earth — based on the namesake comic book series launched in 2017 by creator Zack Kaplan, Top Cow Productions, and Image Comics — for television with Amazon Studios.

Written by Kaplan with art by Andrea Mutti (Rebels, Batman Eternal), the gritty sci-fi series Port of Earth, tells the story of an alien alliance called The Consortium who have come to Earth with a business proposition: open Earth as a spaceport for our customers to use and receive advanced technology upgrades in exchange.

When rogue aliens break the Port restrictions and wreak havoc in different cities, however, the terms of the deal begin to change. Soon it is up to the Earth Security Agents to send them back to the Port of Earth. With The Consortium representing thousands of alien planets the series delves into political issues of exploitation, occupation, espionage, duplicity, technology, and leverage, all in a gritty sci-fi setting.

That all sounds wildly unprofessional.

anyone check out The Order yet? I'm a sucker for supernatural bullshit, but the trailer looked pretty schlocky.

Yeesh @ that Dark Matter story. Joseph Mallozzi has really gotten the short end of the stick a few times in the decade since Stargate SG-1 ended. Atlantis cancelled with a planned TV movie he wrote but never got to film, Universe cancelled unceremoniously, and now this.

'SMILF' Canceled at Showtime Amid Probe Into Creator Frankie Shaw's Alleged Misconduct

Amid producer ABC Studios' investigation into the SMILF creator and star's alleged on-set misconduct, Showtime has opted to not renew the Golden Globe-nominated comedy for a third season.

"After weighing a variety of factors, Showtime has decided that SMILF will not move forward for a third season. The remainder of the second season will continue to air as scheduled on Showtime through its series finale on March 31. We remain extremely proud of the two seasons of SMILF, and thank Frankie Shaw for her singular voice and unique creation, as well as the dozens of writers, producers, actors, directors and crew members both in Los Angeles and on location in Boston, who contributed to this exceptional series," Showtime said in a statement.

ABC Studios, which produced SMILF and had star and creator Shaw under an overall deal, has suspended that pact. "Frankie Shaw's overall deal with ABC Studios has been suspended without pay while we review our options," an ABC Studios spokesperson said in a statement.
I guess Shaw's insufficient 'apologies' during the publicity tour for S2 weren't enough.

Honestly, if Speechless ends this season, it would be a good time to do so. It would be tough to do a new season with JJ out on his own in college.

No reason is given. He just says HBO didn't want them to make any more episodes. It's basically a moment to joke with Conan.

He mentions a potential movie to be in the cards, but I bet that will not happen.
All the news reports are just citing the Conan interview... lol

Also I thought the thread title would be more punny...

It was quite a bit better than Crashing, but this is another one that I won't miss much. 2 seasons is enough for the type of stories Shaw was interested in telling with these characters. (and obviously the bts stuff was a mess)

That just leaves Kidding, Our Cartoon President (why), and Black Monday as their remaining half hours.

Damn so many shows I watch are ending this year. I never knew life could be this wonderful.

It's so freeing!

It looks like Marti Noxon and Gillian Flynn are mulling another season of Sharp Objects, presumably without Amy Adams, even though it was a miniseries that ended perfectly and really doesn't need another season:

"Maybe there will be a sequel. Maybe we'll get to find out [more about Adora and Camille's sister]," said Noxon. "Gillian and I have thoughts on it."

She later said during the audience Q&A that she initially saw the adaptation of Sharp Objects as an ongoing series that not just focused on Camille, but the people and town of Wind Gap, and then it later became a limited series.

per Deadline

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Much like our present ever-living hellscape that is real life; just let things end dammit.
