Apple Nabs J.J. Abrams Limited Series Starring Jennifer Garner In 'Alias' Reunion
In a competitive situation, Apple has given a straight-to-series order to the one-hour limited drama starring and executive produced by Garner and executive produced by Abrams via his Bad Robot Productions banner.

Based on the 2017 memoir of the same name by Amy Silverstein, the story showcases the power of friendship and the resilience of the human spirit as it follows an extraordinary group of women who supported Silverstein as she waited for a second life-saving heart transplant.

Also, the fine print notes that this doesn't include non-English language or English dubbed shows.

But it does seem to include non-English shows made by English productions (at least in the case of HBO's My Brilliant Friend being included, according to a tweet by FX's John Solberg).
Ah, interesting. I've only seen the slides and I'm working off of those. I think there's a full report floating around somewhere.

Haven't been able to find the full report yet, unfortunately. But it's super fascinating every year how pay cable is the smallest sliver of content but gets so much buzz. Good ratio of acclaim in those numbers!

Midgar, With Love

Just one step closer to All Access' official rebranding to Trekflix.

Game of Thrones is my favorite show currently airing, but I can't exactly act surprised by its success. I'm happy to see so much Westworld on there, though, considering so many fans disliked the 2018 season but I liked it just fine.

Needs more The Expanse, but whatevs. Amazon has saved the best sci-fi show of the 2010s; life remains worth living.

This might be the worst PR line in the history of PR:

LOL. It's certainly up there.

I have heard that after Homecoming (Julia Roberts show, not Spidey) and The Romanoffs failed to set the world of social media alight or prompt any fevered discussions around the watercooler (that's still a thing?), Amazon are now telling producers and anyone else coming in to pitch that they are no longer interested in "small shows".

Presumably this means Amazon are now only interested in 'big swings' as Bezos searches for the three or four GOT sized hits he thinks he needs to win the streaming wars. Even with Jennifer Salke in charge I believe there's still a feeling that they haven't fully transitioned out of the baffling Roy Price regime yet and that Prime is still in a rebuilding mode.

Given that Amazon is prepping to become a one stop shop for everything Lord of The Ring on television, just as CBS Access is going to the home of everything Trek, it'll be interesting to see just how many chances Prime will be willing to take on new material moving forward with this 'AAA' strategy.

Will Bezos let Prime be a little more than a on stop shop for well known IPs like Disney+ or WarnerMedia's platform or could they still try and eek out something like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, every once and a while?

I think Amazon's strategy is short-sighted. The whole reason they hired Salke is because she was able to spot hits from "small shows", e.g. "This is Us." While its good they're throwing money, hand over fist, at big budget "swings", by ignoring the entire market of small shows, you're basically ceding that ground to Netflix, FX, and Disney. Yes, "GoT" is the big-budget behemoth for HBO, but there's also "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Girls" and alternative programming that allows for more diversity in content. By chasing the GoT dragon, you let Netflix corner the market on unique & creative dramas. For every "The End of the Fucking World", there's a "Gypsy". For every "Ozark", there was a "Seven Seconds." By throwing your hands up at the failure of two Price-era shows, you've done this:

Though, I can understand why, financially, it makes sense to stop making "small shows". Prime is like a hobby for Amazon: since it'll never compete with media companies directly, it doesn't have to worry about things like content libraries since they won't really affect the bottom line. However, for Prime Video itself, right now, it doesn't have the backlog to withstand something like Disney, Time Warner, NBCUniversal et al. pulling their backlog for their own proprietary services. It needs small shows to prepare for the time that comes.

Amazon has enough money to not only compete with HBO on the big-budget TV show front but also enough to compete with the FXes and Netflixes of the world. And if it wants to get serious about streaming domination, it needs to realize how important small shows can be towards filling out a depleting catalog.

Behind CBS's Secret $9.5 Million Settlement With the Actress Eliza Dushku
In March 2017, Eliza Dushku, an actress known for her work on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," signed on to play a major role in three episodes of the CBS prime-time drama "Bull," and there were plans to make her a full-time cast member.

Her time on the set began promisingly. The show's star, Michael Weatherly — a mainstay of CBS's prime-time lineup for 15 years — seemed friendly. And a producer and writer on "Bull," Glenn Gordon Caron, told Ms. Dushku she would be more than a love interest.

Then came a series of comments that made Ms. Dushku uncomfortable. In front of the cast and crew, Mr. Weatherly remarked on her appearance, and made a rape joke and a comment about a threesome. Shortly after Ms. Dushku confronted the star about his behavior, she was written off the show. She believed her time on "Bull" came to a sudden end as a result of retaliation.
After considering a lawsuit, Ms. Dushku entered into mediation with CBS. Mark Engstrom, the chief compliance officer at CBS, participated, along with Bettina B. Plevan, a partner at the law firm Proskauer Rose, who was serving as outside counsel for the company.

Mr. Engstrom handed over outtakes from "Bull" in the belief that they would help the network's cause, because they showed Ms. Dushku cursing on the set, investigators wrote in the draft of their report.

The strategy backfired. The outtakes were a "gold mine" for Ms. Dushku, the lawyers wrote, because they "actually captured some of the harassment on film."

Although the investigators praised Mr. Engstrom for his "tremendous institutional knowledge" and described him as a "smart and very capable lawyer," they said the company's failure to recognize the instances of harassment caught on tape was a symptom of larger problems at CBS

Meh. Small shows will always find a way. Plus, seeing as how Amazon is one of the very few places that can actually afford all these mega budget sci-fi/fantasy series, I say bring it on.

I'm happy with Amazon's transition to big genre shows. It's the right call. Everywhere else makes small shows, so being one of the few places that can afford a ton of big shows, investing in that makes a lot of sense to me.

I still haven't had time for Hill House or Sabrina. Really hope I can get around to them during the Christmas holiday.

Thursday night's ratings. The schedule should show that there was a rerun of The Good Place last night, so pretend there's an "R" next to it:

Amazon won't give up. They're too big and investing too much money. They will make it work. They may scale back a bit and produce less after this deluge if a lot of it doesn't fly, but they won't give up.

Apple Makes Peanuts Deal; DHX Media To Produce New Series, Specials & Shorts With Classic Characters For Streamer
Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang are coming to Apple. In a competitive situation, the streaming service has landed a deal with DHX Media to produce new Peanuts content.

Working closely with its subsidiary Peanuts Worldwide, DHX Media will develop and produce original programs, including new series, specials and shorts based on the beloved characters created by Charles M. Schultz.

One of the projects under the deal is original short-form STEM content that will be exclusive to Apple, featuring astronaut Snoopy. Peanuts Worldwide and NASA recently signed a Space Act Agreement, designed to inspire a passion for space exploration and STEM among the next generation of students.

I agree with that. They have a mountain of shows incoming, by mid-next year they should start having a lot of them starting to arrive. Some of them will definitely miss, but Amazon seems in it to stay for the long haul.

Now this is awesome.

Is homecoming any good? I hate Julia Roberts but hearing the story is suspenseful?

I'm likely stronger about it than others will be, but I loved it! It's very suspenseful, thoughtful, and full of incredible performances and amazing shots. It's a really well-told season, and half hour episodes, which is always welcome!

Kevin Reilly Named Head Of Content & Strategy For WarnerMedia's New Streaming Service
Kevin Reilly, President of TBS and TNT and Chief Creative Officer for Turner Entertainment, is expanding his role at WarnerMedia to also oversee creative for the company's upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming platform.

Reilly, who will keep his current Turner responsibilities, has been named President TBS, TNT and Chief Creative Officer Turner and Direct-to-Consumer. He is being tasked with charting the creative identity of the WarnerMedia direct-to-consumer platform. Reilly and his team will identify the non-HBO original, library and licensed content that will go on the platform.
So maybe in the near future we'll get actual info on what the WarnerOTT actually is. And it does seem that the explanation for the chaotic messaging around the service that made it seem they were making it up as they went along... is that they were making it up as they went along.

I'm slightly surprised that Reilly is keeping his position as head of TNT/tbs as well as this new streaming platform. I'm assuming that this means WarnerMedia's SVOD platform will take the 'second window' on all TNT and tbs' original content so I suppose that it makes sense that they have someone able to co-ordinate all that into one cohesive product.

I had heard that an Adult Swim app (much like Boomerang, a mix of original content and library) was in the offing but I wouldn't be surprised if that is now intended to become part of this new platform's higher tier. All in all WarnerMedia have plenty of big brands that they can utilise to make this new platform work (Adult Swim as mentioned and a dedicated Cartoon Network app too to name but two) but they have to hit the ground running as they won't have the luxury afforded to a Hulu or Amazon Prime and get a few years to find their feet.
