Lucifer I heard has been performing super well for Netflix, topping charts for four weeks in a row. Why is Netflix so eager to end all of their shows lately?

Is it possible the company isn't worried about retaining users? Keeping an old show might keep current users on, but it is less likely to attract new people? So they might think that constantly adding new shows is more likely to get new subscribers, and active users won't cancel because they'll just move on the the next thing. That's the best logic I can come up with, but it seems kind of shaky.

Isn't Jake Adelstein kinda a fraud?
Possibly. Lots of criticism of various bits of his writing and reporting. He weaved a compelling yarn in that book but he's been accused of fabricating a lot, and making wild allegations about people that went nowhere when investigated.

Even treating this as a work of fiction, I think Ansel Elgort, perpetual babyface, is really miscast.

oh right I almost forgot about this, remember when I mentioned that the streaming wars have already gotten weird in the Nordics?
Morena Baccarin ("Homeland," "Deadpool") is set to star in "Home Invasion," a science-fiction comedy series produced by NENT Group's Brain Academy ("Conspiracy of Silence").

The six-part English language series will also star Johan Glans ("Swedish Dicks") and John Noble ("Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"). "Home Invasion" will premiere across the Nordics in 2020 exclusively on NENT Group's
ambitious streaming service, "Viaplay."
Don Bitters ("House of Cards") will direct and create the visual effects for "Home Invasion." It's executive produced by Melanie DiPietro at Brain Academy.

"Home Invasion" will center on a normal family made up of aliens sent to invade Earth. The series tells the story of two burglars who breaks into a house who find themselves face to face with an absurd close encounter.
They're still weird.

on one hand, cool they are giving it a final season, on the other, as far as its public, Lucifer is huge for Netflix, so they save the show to now cancel it? What exactly are they looking for I wonder? Stranger Things level hits for every show?

Maybe the cast and crew contractually get huge salary bumps after S5?

Also, they may just have some internal metrics that indicate audiences won't stay with a show after a certain number of seasons. S1-5 as a complete package with a proper ending might be the value sweet spot they were looking for. Plus, by virtue of being a network show, also has a higher episode count than a comparable "Netflix Original" after 5 seasons.

I'd say the internal metrics say ending at Season 5 will be good.

It could be awful, but look at something like The Leftovers, which could definitely be described as Misery porn, for at least the first season.

And that'd be correct!

Finally we're getting some (potential) details. And it also seems like the reason why the initial announcement about tiers and the like was confusing was that they actually hadn't worked it out yet.
edit: they added some more potential details in that Variety article:

I wouldn't mind paying $16-17 per month if it really has HBO, Cinemax, original series, and tons of movies. That's a really good value.

(I hope they have a robust classic movie section - Warner Bros. is one of the oldest movie studios so my expectations are high.)

The article mentions that pay TV people with HBO would get the Warner SVOD service included. Since I currently have cable + HBO, it sounds like I might get the service w/out an additional cost. Which would be great, although I'm not sure how much longer I plan to keep HBO after I catch up on the past season of True Detective.

It's low-key (... ok; very low-key) one of the best shows that has come out of the UK over the last five years. The premise is good, but it's the execution that is just brilliant. It's just this very down to earth (sorrynosorry), contemplative comedy that feels like a breath of fresh air in just how low the stakes are. And it has Toby Jones, that's always a big plus.
You'd think a show about guys trying to find artifacts in a field would be boring, but as an excuse to get some of these characters together, it just works. lol

The Palme d'Or winning director "Dheepan" will direct some episodes of the fifth and final season of "The Bureau," along with the series creator Eric Rochant, Jérôme Salle, Thomas Bidegain, Anna Novion, Samuel Collardey and Mathieu Kassovitz, who is also the star of "The Bureau."
HOLY FUCK.
Kassovitz (finally) going behind the camera is incredibly nice, but getting a surprise Audiard? I'm not sure I can put into words how psyched that makes me.
There's going out with a bang and then there's this.
If you're not watching this, you're missing out.

in news that aren't motherfucking Jacques Audiard is doing episodes of The Bureau (and thus kinda not worth paying attention to):
AMC Networks has acquired the rights to Mona Awad's (13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl) anticipated forthcoming novel Bunny to develop as a television series.

The best serialised show is ending. They brought out the big guns from behind The Bureau for it.Playwright Megan Mostyn-Brown is attached to write the pilot as part of her overall deal with AMC. Bunny will be released June 11 by Viking, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
The novel tells the story of Samantha Heather Mackey, who couldn't be more of an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England's Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people, Samantha is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort—a clique of unbearably twee yet menacing rich girls who call each other "Bunny." When Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies' fabled "Smut Salon," everything suddenly changes and she finds herself inexplicably drawn to their front door—ditching her only friend, Ava, in the process. As Samantha plunges deeper and deeper into the sinister yet saccharine world of the Bunny cult and starts to take part in their ritualistic off-campus "Workshop," the edges of reality begin to blur, and her friendships with Ava and the Bunnies are brought into deadly collision.

Fantastic. Have they announced if
Malotru is alive or dead for sure? I took it as dead, but it could be whatever they want really.

From the announcement:
Mathieu Kassovitz is listed amongst the cast as well, but not in what capacity. So maybe he's not dead, or maybe he's playing a corpse in the first episode. 🤷‍♂️

Okay, so somehow I missed this. But when I fixed the article link so it linked directly to the Variety article:
A U.S. remake of "The Bureau" titled "The Department" is currently in development, with Peter Landesman ("Mark Felt") attached to write and direct.
I think this is news?
Oh well, can't wait for it to disappoint!

Looks like NOS4A2 performed well - 2nd biggest scripted cable premiere of 2019 behind History Channel's Project Blue Book. I'm halfway through the season and think it's pretty solid thus far. The first season only covers the first 1/3 of the book, so hopefully they get to cover the whole thing (pretty likely considering AMC's track record, as well as the fact that they're already ending 3 series this year and also own NOS4A2).

If you're not watching this, you're missing out.

I still need to watch seasons 3 and 4...

That sounds kinda interesting, but also vaguely similar to Dietland. I hope this ends up better than that did.

Might be good, probably not though.

Dammit! This was one of the best things on HBO. It couldn't have cost much to produce and there are all sorts of topics they could have covered in future seasons, so I just assumed it would be around for a few more years. Especially since HBO is supposed to be increasing production on originals. Bleh.

Yeah, the premise could work for say the CIA, but I'm sceptical that it will be handled as elegantly as the original. Speaking of remakes and France though, have we talked about the really weird French Fleabag remake?

Because we need to talk about the really weird French Fleabag remake.
(it's apparently not a straight up trainwreck at least)

I liked what I watched of it, but man it got like zero traction in the media compared to the other Daily Show alumni (Last Week Tonight, Full Frontal) shows

'The Red Line' Canceled By CBS After One Season

Lee Daniels Promises "You Ain't Seen The Last" Of 'Star' & "Closure" For Fans Of Canceled Fox Drama
A week ago, Lee Daniels admitted a revival of Star "ain't happening," but today the co-creator of the now canceled music drama offered hope to fans pounding Fox for pink slipping the series.

"We will have something with some closure," Daniels announced on social media Friday afternoon for the Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, and Brittany O'Grady-led series that got axed after three seasons in early May.

"You ain't seen the last of Star, the hype savvy Oscar nominee added from what looked to be the busy set of the pilot of his Good People comedy. "We will have something that will make you happy."

No.

NO.

WHY?!?

Ah well, The Good Place is one of the best shows on TV but if they wanna go out by their own terms than I guess I'll accept it.

A rare time I've been happy to see new news in the thread. More shows should have a planned end (after all, stories are supposed to have ends just like they're supposed to have beginnings) on their own terms, and I'm glad they stuck to it

I still enjoy the show quite a bit but there's only so much you can do with the premise and they've definitely started to approach that point. Glad it's going out on its own terms.

The upcoming fourth season of "The Good Place" will be the final one, according to creator Michael Schur:

Aaaw. Boo. I really liked my Jay-Z title.
~~still haven't watched the show despite it being readily available to me on Netflix~~
I know right? It's a weird show to adapt, but hey France kinda needs a show like Fleabag and if that means redoing it all in French then go right ahead.

I watched the first few episodes of this show over the last few days (been marathoning Bob's Burgers for the first time but needed something a little bit different) and I'm really enjoying it so far.
