I'm really curious to see how it's going to go down with his opponent Walker Stapleton, who seems to be aiming squarely towards the Trump crowd, a man my state never voted for in neither the primaries or general. Still you never know.

I would like to think Polis is a shoe in, but you never know. Best to never count out the Republicans... *gulp*

If we were to make a short statement that encompasses all the elections that will take place in November and what will most likely happen, are we happy or sad, or something like "Shut the fuck up and vote, we don't know!"

Whaaaat I had no idea! That's awesome. Just based on my time in Colorado and the friends I have there it seems like things have moved left enough that a gubernatorial candidate being openly gay shouldn't doom their campaign. I'll be cheering for Polis.

Also, zer0blivion looks like Ocasio-Cortez pulled off the upset. What blows my mind is that she's 28. Super impressive.

What I wonder about "millennial" (barf) candidates is - will our generation's use of social media come back to bite political candidates? Or will we start to accept that probably everyone posted dumb drunk photos at age 18 and it doesn't actually matter?

Wait who's the first openly gay governor? Vox is saying Polis would be the first one.

And always treat Republicans seriously in elections. Until we win the fight, don't count them out!

Polis Vs Kennedy was also an extremely tough choice. But Polis major push for climate regulations won in the end.

He is the first openly gay candidate to win his party's nomination for governor in Colorado history. Only one state has had an openly gay governor.

Source

However, I may have misread that and maybe it's saying that only one of the candidates in these primaries (across all states) is openly gay?

No, Jim McGreevey was openly gay (briefly) as the governor of NJ. He had to resign due to a scandal with his lover.

Oh, and Oklahoma exceeded 40% turnout tonight and cast more votes than in the 2014 general election.

Reminder - the Families Belong Together March is tomorrow. Can you give a few hours to speak up for those that have no voice?

Find a local march and get more info here:

I'll be there along with a few friends. Anyone got any good sign ideas?

18 weeks to go until the midterms. Let's make the most of it.

Primary Elections in July
Tuesday, July 17 - Primary run-offs in Alabama and North Carolina
Tuesday, July 24 -Primary run-off in Georgia. Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Sec. of State Brian Kemp are facing off in a runoff for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.

Primary registration deadlines in July
July 9 - Michigan, Washington State
July 11 - Missouri
July 12 - Hawaii
July 17 - Kansas
July 22 - Alaska
July 24 - Minnesota
July 25 - Wisconsin
July 30 - Arizona, Florida

July is a great time to get involved
There aren't a lot of primary elections in July, making it the "slow" season before things pick up heading into the fall. With less elections to keep track of, July is the perfect time to get involved in campaigns, in causes, and in making sure those around you are going to vote in the fall. Here are some questions to ponder:
  1. Is your registration up to date? Whether the primary is upcoming or has come and gone, it's always a good idea to make sure you're prepared to vote in the next election. Use the state-by-state resources in the second post or a website like Vote411 to find deadlines and registration instructions for your state.
  2. Are your friends and family registered to vote? If we all motivate five friends or family members to vote this fall it will completely change the course of the election. There are a lot of folks out there who want to vote, but haven't put in the time to register, find their polling location, or check what's on the ballot this fall. Use resources like Vote411, Ballotpedia, or VoterPal to help them get registered and ready to vote.
  3. Are there any nearby campaigns or causes you can get involved with? Nearly any candidate or cause you can think of would love and appreciate your help over the next few months. You can phonebank for a local candidate, volunteer in a nearby swing district, and give money to / work for organizationswho are fighting for a good cause.
  4. Have you called your representatives recently? Phone calls won't magically transform our government overnight, but in pivotal situations there is no doubt that constituent pressure makes a difference. Constituent pressure killed the ACA repeal last year, just brought California's Net Neutrality law back from the dead, and could make a big difference in the Senate's upcoming Supreme Court nomination battle. Use 5calls.org to find contact info for your representatives and scripts you can use.

Just 13 weeks to go until the mid-term elections!

Upcoming primary elections
Tuesday, August 7th
Primaries in Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, and Washington.
Special election in Ohio House District 12 - a district that Trump won handily, but is now locked in a very close special election contest. If Democrat Danny O'Conner pulls of a victory (or even comes close) it'll be yet another warning sign for Republicans heading into the fall.

Saturday, August 11th
Hawaii Primary.

Upcoming primary registration deadlines
August 6th - Wyoming
August 9th - Connecticut (online registration deadline)
August 11th - Delaware
August 12th - Rhode Island
August 14th - Vermont
August 15th - Massachusetts

August is a big month - things are heating up!
Most of the remaining high-stakes primaries are in the month of August, as well as a very interesting special election in Ohio House District 12. Over the next few weeks the focus of the thread will shift from the primaries to the general election, but the same pointers on how to get involved still apply:
  1. Is your registration up to date? Whether the primary is upcoming or has come and gone, it's always a good idea to make sure you're prepared to vote in the next election. Use the state-by-state resources in the second post or a website like Vote411 to find deadlines and registration instructions for your state.

Use 5calls.org to find contact info for your representatives and scripts you can use. This is especially effective for any lawmakers that are up for re-election this fall!

Courtesy Jen Hoffman, here's some good news from the past week:
National
  • Ruling: DACA must be fully reinstated.
  • Ruling: A lawsuit that demonstrates the discriminatory agenda of a census citizenship question may proceed.
  • 4 Homeland Security Advisory Council Members resign in protest of the president's family separation policy, calling it kidnapping and morally repugnant.
  • Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein reported actions the Department of Justice has taken to combat security issues related to U.S. elections.
  • Ruling: The president cannot cut off grants to Philadelphia because of sanctuary policy.
  • A federal judge will appoint a special monitor to oversee conditions in which immigrant children are being held in the Rio Grande Valley.
  • Bipartisan House Appropriations Committee voted to block DHS from using funds to prevent people fleeing domestic and gang violence from being eligible for asylum.
  • Federal judge allowed a lawsuit against the current administration's decision to add a citizenship question on the 2020 census to continue.
  • Polls show overwhelming nationwide bipartisan support for automatic voter registration and restoration of voting rights to formerly incarcerated people.

Primaries tonight in Vermont, Connecticut, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. If you're following along, FiveThirtyEight has a great preview of what to look for tonight.

In more general get involved news, I've been gradually reaching out to friends who I'm less than 100% certain would turn out to vote about the midterms and the response, overall, has been positive.
  • First, I assembled a list (by scrolling through my phone contacts, mostly) of folks I know who are neither 0% voters nor 100% voters. Turns out most people I know fall into this category.
  • I've been reaching out one by one through texts, phone calls, or conversations (depending on what makes sense for our relationship). I spent all kinds of time bouncing ideas back and forth with a friend about what kind of template message to use, but after all of that work I found the best success rate in just going simple. I just ask - "Is your voter registration up to date? You can check here:" and then providing a link to their state's voter website (pulled from the list in the OP). With a simple message like this, somewhere around 95% of folks respond. When I was leading off with three paragraphs of information ("are you voting? Here's why it's important! Here are the issues in your state!") the response rate was further towards 80%. Instead of running people over with that stuff right off the bat, I just tell them at the end that if they have any questions about why it's important to vote / who's on the ballot / politics in general, they are more than welcome to reach out. A few friends have done so.
  • Thus far I've been surprised how many people are tuned in this year - even young-ish people like me who haven't necessarily paid much attention to politics before. Still, at least five folks I talked to weren't super tuned in and are now in the process of preparing to vote (mostly they hadn't updated their registration in a while or needed to apply of absentee). If just a few of them turn out, then I'll feel like I did what I could to make a difference.
Has anyone else been reaching out to potential voters or otherwise getting involved? If so, I'd love to hear what you've been doing and how it's been working out.

Voted in Wisconsin. We'll see what happens
What's your read on the Governor's race over there? Seems like a crowded field on the Dem side.

Also, I didn't realize (until I read the FiveThirtyEight preview) that Randy Bryce has had so many weird controversies this year and now has a serious primary challenger. He was a social media hit last year but I guess that doesn't always translate to a strong campaign.
Not sure if that's your district or not, but I'm curious to see what happens there.

It is my district. I don't think the controversies have hurt Bryce's chances.
In terms of Republican candidates, the front runner looks like Kevin Adam Steen as I see his signs all around town. Thankfully nobody is talking about Nehlan.
I'm not sure what's going on with the governor's race. I do know that Scott Walker is not that popular.

I suspect Paul Ryan retiring was bad for his fundraising. Negative enthusiasm is a very real effect in politics. (see also: people hating Ted Cruz translating into Beto donations)

I haven't kept up with it, but here's FiveThirtyEight's overview:
But since last summer, Bryce has endured bad headline after bad headline: about his nine arrests, including one for driving under the influence; about his delinquent child-support payments and personal debts; and about his views on labor unions and the GOP tax-cut bill. His Democratic opponent, Janesville School Board member Cathy Myers, has seized on the controversies (although she herself was accused of a conflict of interest in 2015) and hasn't shied away from contrasting her gender with Bryce's indelicate tweets about women. Her strategy may be paying off: Myers has raised $1.3 million — no Iron Stache haul, but a hefty sum for an ordinary congressional race — and she ran even with Bryce in a poll of the Democratic primarysponsored by a conservative super PAC.

That's probably true. A lot of the initial excitement (from my read, at least) was that he was the anti-Paul Ryan in almost every way. I guess it's hard to keep that momentum going without Paul Ryan there to serve as a foil.

Color me mildly surprised that it looks like Phil Scott is going to survive the GOP primary in Vermont. I thought the whole gun-control thing was definitely a poison pill with a GOP primary electorate, but I guess I don't know Vermont super well.

He sure did! It'll be interesting to see if he can pull the focus of his campaign back to local / district issues, after having been a nationwide social media star of sorts. It certainly would be nice to see Ryan's district flip, even if Ryan is stepping down.

I'm off the bed for the night, but first a quick plug - if you care enough to follow along with stuff like this, please consider taking a look around the thread for ideas on how to keep the momentum going through the fall elections. Voting, giving, volunteering, reaching out to those around you - it all makes a big difference.

I'm planning to reach out to some more friends tomorrow about whether their registrations are up to date.

Not surprised Randy Bryce won. Man's been campaigning his ass off. I'll be voting for him in November.
His GOP opponent is Bryan Steil, a clone of Paul Ryan that worked as his aide. Thaaaat won't play well with WI-1 people.

I've been extremely busy the past few weeks starting a new job, but I will have an eye tomorrow night on the Florida and Arizona primaries, which are really the two biggest remaining primaries. Some interesting races to follow:
  • In their gubernatorial primaries, will Floridians nominate establishment favorites (Putnam for the R's, Graham for the D's) or go with more "outsider" figures? I put outsider in quotes because Ron DeSantis, who's leading for the GOP primary, isn't actually an outsider, but likes to pretend he is as he's busy doing his whole "I'M JUST LIKE TRUMP" schtick.
  • While the Democratic primary is all but decided in Arizona's Senate race, the GOP primary will be interesting to watch. Will the establishment candidate (Martha McSally) lose to "CHEMTRAIL KELLY" or the ludicrously racist Joe Arpaio? (the answer is maybe and probably not, respectively).
I'm interested to see whether DeSantis wins, and what effect that has on the race (some polling had him trailing Democratic candidates that Putnam led). I'm also interested to see what Arpaio's vote share is, like what percentage of primary voters are willing to vote for someone who isn't even pretending not to hate non-white people?

The thread will undergo a bit of a shift after the big primaries are over toward gearing up for the general election, so stay tuned and let's make a difference!

Man,
I'm a fucking idiot.. thought voting closed at 8 so I actually didn't vote on this crucially important election.
Fortunately, the candidates I would have voted for are all winning by substantial margins.

And DeSantis is winning in the Republic governor race, which is awesome since it is virtually impossible to untie him from Trump.
I'm confident we will (finally) get a Dem governor but I'm really worried Bill Nelson loses his seat.

Glad to see Andrew Gillum doing so well! I would hope everyone gets a chance to read his profile on the issues affecting Florida. I was going to vote for Gwen Graham because she was polling higher than the repugs but definitely Gillum was my guy.
