2022 Video Game Awards Season - Tracking and Discussion Thread (New!: Categories and Genre Winners added)

Another year, another award season. Last year was a very spread out year with many games having a shot at the title. The overall winner ended being the co-op darling It Takes Two by Hazelight; taking the lead with just 84 awards total.

This year will pit the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Elden Ring against the highly anticipated and also critically acclaimed sequel of 2018's overall GOTY, God of War Ragnarok. Other potential candidates include the indies darlings such Neon White and Sam Barlow's Immortality, Nintendo's big threequels such as Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Bayonetta 3 and PS Studios' Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7. There's also some potential late candidates such Obsidian's Pentiment and The Callisto Protocol. Will we have surprise winners or the usual title match between the 2 top rated games?

In previous years we have used both GOTYblog; the pioneer of the GOTY tallies/rules (as far as we can tell) and gameawards.net; which took on the mantle post 2019, they later added new rules to legitimize the tallies and went as far as to the tallies for previous years, increasing the total for many games. Unfortunately due to various reasons including inactivity, these sites are not longer being used as source for GOTY tallies.

Instead we are tackling this year's GOTY tally on our own with the help from various ERA users and other onlookers. It must be said that previous sites were already using these threads as a source for any findings, so we are confident that we'll be able to make it work as well and as fair as they would have.

In the meantime, User a0mineda1k1 has created a GOTY tracking site (work in progress) which is in process of backing up previous years from the previous sites and will update this year's tally based on the findings on this thread.

Until further notice, the rules for eligibility will remain mostly the same from those created by GOTYBlog and gameawards.net. Of course, if there's any rules worth questioning or changing, feel free to bring them up for discussion.

Lastly feel free to help out in finding and posting any awards you find. A lot of sites come and go and it will definitely help keep the tallies as accurate as possible. I have a feeling a lot of them will be counted for this year for two obvious candidates.

Any console, PC, handheld or mobile video game is included, provided that it is named the overall Game of the Year (GOTY) from an eligible media outlet.

"Expansions"/DLC, whether standalone or add-ons, to otherwise eligible titles are included.
All "Remake" versions are included from 2019 onward.
Votes awarded to non-remastered or non-remade "ports" (i.e. a game re-released on new platforms in largely the same state) will be counted toward the totals in the year of the title's initial U.S. release date.
To be eligible, the awarded title needs to have been released in the country of the media outlet. For media outlet critics, the title needs to have been released for review to critics before the publication of the award. For "readers' choice" votes, the title needs to have been released to the public before voting begins.

"Media outlets" include websites, magazines, newspapers, radio and TV broadcasts, podcasts, industry ceremonies, and online entertainment companies.

Media Outlets must be active for more than a year and consistently produce gaming related articles, videos or content.
- Award results from the outlets may be announced on any platform, including social media.
- If a previously ineligible outlet provides more than a year of content, both their current and previous winners will be eligible as long as they still meet the required criteria below.
Outlets with ties of toxic behavior, discriminatory articles or considered as a bad influence to the gaming community are not eligible.
Outlets that are suspected to have AI created content are not eligible.
Outlets that appears to be predominantly operated by a single individual/staff member will be not be eligible.
- There must be more than 1 working staff who consistently contribute to the outlet, specifically the outlet's gaming related content.
At least two staff members need to be part of the award selection process.
- If the Outlet's winner is posted by an individual rather than multiple staff members, it can still be eligible as long as they indicate that it is not a personal/individual list.
Student-operated newspapers are counted provided that they are from a college or university and they regularly write content for the majority of the year and they meet all of the other criteria.
User community sites that allow free-email or anonymous registration are not eligible.
Outlets with an overly restrictive scope—focusing on a particular region, genre, or concept to the exclusion of most games—are not eligible.
To avoid platform bias, votes from media outlets that are exclusively focused on a single platform or family of platforms (PlayStation, Xbox, PC, etc.) are not eligible.

Only overall GOTY awards are eligible. Individual genre, platform and technical achievement awards do not count toward a title's total GOTY awards.
- An outlet's 'overall GOTY' is the single title to which they give their highest award of the year, except in the case of a tie/draw vote.
If a tie occurs, then all winners will be counted.
- The number of titles awarded needs to be fewer than the number of staff on the voting team. For example, an outlet with three voting staff members cannot simply name each of their separate, personal favorites as the three different winners and call that a draw; if those three staff members have two titles tie as the result of a points system however, those two titles would be eligible. A maximum of three titles will be accepted as a points-based draw.
"Best of the year" lists are counted as a media outlet's overall GOTY if the top choice is clearly communicated and the site does not have a separate formal GOTY award selection.
Inherently excluding any category of games from the GOTY awards, including indie titles, means that the main award is not actually an "overall" award, as it is not open to nominating games overall but only a certain subset of them.
- A site can separately recognize any categories that they wish ("best AAA games," "best indies," etc), and they do not need to nominate all types of games every year, but their highest award needs to at least, in principle, be open to games from all categories.
- If a site has strict rules, such as excluding DLCs and Remakes, they will be counted just as long as it within reason.
Retrospective awards are only accepted for years that the media outlet actually existed, produced regular content for more than half of the year, and did not originally give out an award for the year in question.
- "Retrospective" refers to any awards not given during the original year or subsequent year of the award title (for example, giving an award for 2016 in 2018 or later.)

GameAwards.net will have two important guidelines changes for this season onward--potentially controversial, but they're ones that I've wanted to see implemented for years now, and I think they have solid reasoning underpinning them.

(1) If a media outlet's award appears to have been posted by an individual (rather than multiple members of staff), it will not be counted. At least two staff members need to be part of the award selection process.

This will mainly affect newspapers and their digital equivalents, but there are a non-trivial number of websites that only have single individuals selecting winners as well.

Rationale: One guy from the Los Angeles Times or Toledo Blade who likely didn't play all of the top games of the year shouldn't get to have their sole opinion counted as equivalent to multi-member teams from other outlets who have to engage in discussions and votes to reach a consensus.
There has always been a rule against one-person sites being included (for the obvious reason that it would be impossible to track the opinions of every person who says what their favorite game is on their personal blog), but there was a loophole in the rules where a site would have one person posting the vast majority of the articles, and a couple of their friends dropping in haphazardly, technically making the site eligible, even when those other people don't get any say in the GOTY article. That loophole is now closed.

(2) Outlets posting awards and/or having an eligibility cutoff before November 15th for the current year will not be counted.

Fewer than ten sites should be affected by this rule.

Rationale: It's accepted industry standard for dozens of popular sites to not include the last few weeks of December (TGAs, Golden Joysticks, Premios Xataka, Brazil Game Awards, GameSpot, etc), but a handful of sites have been pushing their awards earlier and earlier, and having 2-3 entire months of the year not included is stretching the year too thin. Trusted Reviews posted their awards Nov 14, 2019; then Oct 6, 2020; back one week to Oct 14, 2021; and now Sept 29 this year (they also only included three games from 2022, which is a different discussion). This rule also helps formalize a standard against sites with very unusual qualifying periods like Develop:Star Awards, that did their most recent conference in July, and Japan Game Awards, that goes from April to March, both of which eliminate half of the year from contention.

Basically, I see GoW:R winning every category (including developer) except the Main Game of the Year one which could be Elden Ring.

I feel that is the safest way most of these award schemes will go about to appease both the rabid fanbases of these franchises. Give all the craft awards to Ragnarok, but give the GOTY to Eldern Ring.

I expect Elden Ring dominate US outlets the big ones because of the new flavor , with Ragnarok winning more in EU and minor sites. I think Elden Ring will win more but not as much as folks expect early this year, closer to RDR2/GoW2018 split.

I never expected a list where I've played the top five games. Good job at Paste Magazine as always. Also good to see a longer list that features lesser known games in addition to the usual suspects. Only Paste Magazine, Slant Magazine and Polygon do that every year, and they are my most valued GotY lists.

Most outlets only produce a list though. Not even IGN bother to create different categories.

Yeah, Horizon should def be on there somewhere, I think GoW was past their eligibility date if it's not listed?

It's a purely fan voted award and Sonic/Genshin are voting.

Starfield (Bethesda has won overall GOTY 3 times with Fallout 4 in 2nd place behind Witcher 3)

Final Fantasy XVI (Square's most awarded game is FF7 Remake which was #5 in 2020)

Resident Evil 4 (2023) (RE2 Remake was the 2nd overall winner in 2019)

Spider-Man 2 (Predecessor came in 3rd place in 2018 behind GOW and RDR2)
