Rather disappointed but not surprised by the dehumanising language used about the man. Clearly, his actions are fucking horrible and he needs to be accountable to them. But I've seen too many people who this forum would gladly label monsters who were the products of horrible life circumstances outside their own control, and unnoticed by the system until it was far too late

You're a horrible person to even go there. Shame on you. Shame on you. Especially when its perpetrated by racism and hate.

what you're doing right now, is an extension of this thought bubble

Thank god for cameras and camera phones spreading. Growing up as a minority we would go around with others and commiserate over this kind of random and senseless act of hate.

With utter incredulity whites and christians would ask us what the whole story was.... that surely something was done to provoke these kinds of violent outbursts.

No.

It just happens.

People are just that shitty to minorities.

Please tell us more about how the attacker is the victim.

( Don't. I don't actually care about what you think. I think people who use things like this to prop themselves up as you have offer nothing to the conversation. )

Not really, as those issues are much more specific to the US.

Racism is a much bigger issue than most Australians care to admit, but racism in general, and this kind of attack specifically, aren't "Australian" issues.

I've lived in Australia for half a decade (pre and post 9/11) and I don't agree at all.

Islamophobia and racism (not just to brown folks, but Asians as well) has always been a thing there, and I feel like it's only gotten worse. After everything that's happened in the past year it's time to start taking this seriously.

EDIT: and if people take issue with how I framed my post, deal with it. It's been a tough year for Muslims in general so of course I'm fucking angry.

An Australian going into any thread about racist violence in America and posting "America eh? You guys really need to get your shit together and stop with this racist bullshit" wouldn't be well received because it's entirely unhelpful bullshit that's needlessly adversarial.

American here, disagree. If you tell me my country has a racism or gun violence problem and that we need to get our shit together, I'm going to agree with you because that's objective reality.

Conversely a European coming into a thread about racism and claiming it's a uniquely American problem would piss me off because that's NOT objective reality.

When I say racism in general, and this kind of attack specifically, aren't "Australian" issues, I mean that that aren't uniquely Australian issues, not that they aren't issues in Australia.

I do think things have gotten / are getting worse, and a huge part of that is influence from the American right. So much of the modern arguments and rhetoric spouted here is imported directly from the US.

An Australian claiming it's a uniquely American problem should also piss you off because it's not objective reality. We have our own issue with black face, for example, and the common defense is ignorance, that it's an American thing. That's bullshit, we've always consumed so much American media that claiming ignorance is laughable.

I was also thinking of Europeans claiming the continent is less racist than America, yet defending things like zwarte piet.

I am shocked but not surprised
Hey remember ~10 years ago when there was the series of beatings of international students and australian media asked the question "Is australia racist" and the answer was from white guys going "No of course not"

nothing has fucking changed

Quite concerned about the mother and child. It's good to know physical harm was minimised to an extent by the actions of her friends and community members, but the mental stress for herself and her child would be significant. Similarly being a victim of racism and feeling unsafe in your own community is a horrible feeling.

Also concerned about the unborn baby. There's obvious fears on whether the baby suffered injuries in the womb, but other factors, such as high stress in the mother can contribute to developmental complications. Really hope her healthcare professionals continue to monitor the situation closely

He made this choice on his own. Plenty of people can come out of shitty circumstances in their lives without, y'know, beating a pregnant woman on the ground. Can they come out troubled? Certainly. Broken? Possibly. But there's a big fucking step before you hit the line this motherfucker crossed.

No one here owes him an outstretched hand, especially when the victim's own safety is still in question. Because you can bet your fucking ass the people that champion this action against muslim women will have no problem continuing to come at her.

I just can't bring myself to watch that video. Dude is being dehumanized and called a monster because he did something inhuman & monstrous. Hateful enough to consider himself a superior being yet just so cowardly that he can only target the most vulnerable like a pregnant women. Scum like him have lost the ability to be sympathized with. I'm not in the mood to hear about his supposedly tough life or speculate on it when not only are men like him come from all walks but also because "tough" circumstances can only be used to excuse so much. He chose to lose control on someone who had nothing to do with him. There are people who've been through unimaginable hardship who still don't grow up to be bigots who lash out in violence against those they see as inferior. The only person deserving of sympathy/concern is the victim and the community who have to live wondering if they or those they love might be next. Because this guy squandered any he might have been entitled to.

What is the point in posting about this, is it just outrage porn?
If you want to fix the world, you need to see how bad it is. There's an entire running topic on this board about incidents of bigoted harassment and police brutality against black people that's still going because those stories need to be spread lest they be buried and ignored for people to claim that racism is over. It's not porn because it isn't indulgent. I don't know who gets off on seeing shit like this but it isn't me. It's real life that is worth being outraged and righteously indignant about. It should make people angry that this goes on anywhere in the world. And the world is in the state it's in to start with because of how much ignorance and apathy people have displayed towards incidents like this globally and historically.

I believe Middleman was more taking issue with how it was said. "Australia eh? You guys really need to get your shit together and stop with this racist bullshit." is not equivalent to "you need to be better".
Im Australian. We really do need to get our shit together and stop with this racist bullshit.

I have no problem with someone pointing that out.

There is no point.

Do Not Create: Shock Threads

These are threads about news or content that is just disgusting and/or shocking, with little potential for discussion other than outrage. Nobody gains anything from these threads and you should not make them.

There is nothing to discuss. That guy clearly belongs in jail.

So what does that mean?

It doesn't matter what country it occurred in.

This is a discussion forum but all everybody is doing is circlejerking about how much of an arsehole this guy is. Does this lead to better discussion on resetera? Or does it lead to more toxicity?
We have regular threads about trashbags having racist outbursts, kinda sounds to me you're mad there's bad news about your country 🤷‍♀️

Watched it just to see the asshole get knocked down with a chair.

I didn't watch the video but if someone stepped in I am glad, too often people just seem to record things and observe, unwilling to get involved. It takes a lot of bravery also I think for people to get involved because doing nothing is far easier and safer.

You need to give your head a shake defending this racist waste of a human being, there is zero empathy to be had for a piece of shit like this. Just another violent example of why hate crimes need to carry much lengthier sentences, lock this nazi away until he's on a feeding tube and no longer poses a threat to society.

I personally think there is merit to highlighting & discussing hate crimes in our country, and not treating it as a *shrug not much we can do about it*
this isn't about "circlejerking about how much of an arsehole this guy is" this is about a symptom of a systemic problem facing our country

If only we could take all white supremacists, IS terrorists,... and put them all together on a big island so they could wipe each other out.
