MOTHER: THE DARK WORLD HYPE!!!

Thanks a bunch for the great work as always, tolkir. This month doesn't seem that interesting in terms of digital releases outside of Lumines, but honestly that's fine, May murdered my wallet already.

Pirate Pop Plus is so nice! I spent A LOT of time on the 3DS version too and I'm kinda tempted to bite again haha.

Damn, and one of the first messages in the thread is someone selling me 'Pirate Pop Plus', I game that I was trying to not impulse-buy :)

In the best tradition of these eShop threads, they are the worst thing that can happen to your wallet.

Favorite thread on ERA :)

Playing IKARUGA at the moment. Tho I can't get any higher than a B rank for level 1, lol
17 people on my friends list playing it, woah! Proud of you guys :')

I love IKARUGA but I think there's better shmups out there for newcomers. On Switch too.

Anyway anyone found out how the hell do you change controller orientation to play TATE?! It's driving me crazy

It's in Graphics setting.

You sure mate? I see no controller orientation setting in there, only the screen (TATE) which is frankly absurd but hopefully I'm just blind to it and it's there somewhere

A new month, a nice, fresh topic. Nice smell in here.

And a double post from me from the old thread, because I just posted a pretty long post when this one went up:

It's happening every time [in Enigmatis 2] on the same cutscenes or it's happening randomly? Did you find the game great and you recommend it?

It happened in quite a few cutscenes, but I can't say whether it was random or not, because I only saw every cutscene once.

I played quite a few adventure and puzzle games the last month (or 2?), but hardly spoke about them here, so maybe this is the time.

Adventure games:

Enigmatis 2. This game is a more casual approach to the adventure genre. I played through it on the expert difficulty or whatever it was called. It has hidden-objects scenes, inventory puzzles and mechanical puzzles. I felt that these were all on the easy side and I can't recommend this game if you're looking for a challenge. However, they were just interesting enough to not make me feel bored and the game had a nice flow. As for the story, the game is a sequel, but it's not really required to have played that game. I don't think I really missed anything by not playing through the first game. The story and characters themselves are mostly like the puzzles. Inoffensive, but just intestering enough to continue playing. This game is more or less a nice snack for adventure fans with a decent length, but don't expect to feel smart or be wowed by its story. Oh, this is the second game of three, so don't expect everything to be resolved here. The game has no touch controls. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-53tC7JqXs

Goetia: Finished it, but needed a walkthrough for some of the puzzles at the end. This adventure game is pretty hard at times, but that also means that solving puzzles feels good! You play a ghost in this game and as such can move through walls and ceilings and don't have an inventory. If you want to use an item, you need to possess it, but while you can move through walls, items can't. There are many puzzles that revolve around this, as well as a ton of puzzles that revolve around manipulating mechanisms with the help of hints that are found in documents, on walls, etc. I felt that most of the puzzles were well designed, except for some later on, but maybe that's on me for not being smart enough. I prefer the kind of puzzles that this game has to be hard though because I like to be challenged and would rather look up a couple of solutions if I really need to, than just breeze through everything without really being engaged. The central mystery in this game was pretty compelling as well. Has touch controls, but normal controls felt better to me. I can really recommend this game if you're looking for a challenge that lasts you a good time as well. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ktXZTjj6Kw

The Mystery of the Hudson Case. Low price, short, and the story about the hidden past of slave owner was really bad, unbelievabIe and awfully written. Puzzles mostly revolved around picking up hints and applying them without conversion/thought to mechanisms around the house (think Uncharted notebook stuff). I think it was touch only. Avoid this game, it has nothing to offer players. trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wzDGKvej24

The Fall 1&2. Damn, these games are awesome. I never realised that these games are basically adventure games with some light platforming and trivial combat (the second game even has an option to decrease the amount of combat). Was also immensely surprised to see parts in there that were basically
One finger Death Punch.
The story is really compelling. It revolves around AI, their rules and boundaries and how to break them/establish them. Memorable stuff. The inventory and ability puzzles are often pretty smart and revolve around the core issues/themes of the story. It is supposed to become a trilogy (no idea if these games made enough that the third part is a certainty), but I felt that the second game ended in a way that is quite satisfactory even if the third part is never released. Really recommended as well and some of my bigger surprises this year. Trailer (for part 1): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSKo4z1Bqmo

Detention. Awesome atmosphere, symbolism, story and puzzles that are just involved enough not to be trivial, but also easy enough that you won't get stuck for long, which is important I feel as this game is all about its story/central mystery and the journey. Loved the setting as well. I feel it's best played in one sitting, which is easily doable as it lasts only a couple of hours. If you like adventure games you basically owe it to yourself to play this game. Not sure if it has touch controls as I went through this game with somebody else. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqk50TQVkGM

Agatha Knife. I don't really have an opinion on this game yet as I only played it for a bit. I guess it didn't really manage to pull me in as it's the only game in this list that I haven't finished yet. Will probably revisit this one. Has touch controls. trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXUmtziVK9E

Puzzle games (all ports from phone games I believe):

Framed Collection: the central mechanic of moving panels around to help characters reach the final panel is quite ingenious. It works well with both touch and normal controls. It's pretty light on story (has some neat stuff in there though!), but oozes style. While the puzzles are pretty easy most of the time, some of the later ones would take me more time because of how you need to apply some of the mechanics that are introduced later on. Recommended for some light, stylish puzzling. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i9R6Zy44kI

Warp Shift. The puzzles in this game revolve around pushing square rooms around to create pathways to the end of a level and as one would expect from puzzle games later worlds introduce new stuff to make it more complicated. While levels are always easy to finish, the real challenge to be found here is getting three stars on each puzzle, which are awarded if you use the minimum number of steps required to reach the end. Stars are needed to unlock later worlds. This game has both touch and normal controls, that latter of which work really well and have some nice rumble effects. I haven't finished this game yet, but I like the challenges and its levels are short and retries fast, so it's always about solving the puzzles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHka0tknWNo

Splitter Critters. This game has you cutting up/splitting the screen and then moving parts of it around to create pathways for the eponymous critters to reach a ufo. Good central mechanic and puzzles have been simple, but engaging. Haven't finished it yet, so I don't know if it gets challenging towards the end, but don't expect to get stuck or really think hard for the first couple of worlds at least. Has both touch controls and normal controls. Just like Framed and Warp Dimension this game is a hit for me. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ySyMYvpYZw

Damn, and one of the first messages in the thread is someone selling me 'Pirate Pop Plus', I game that I was trying to not impulse-buy :)

In the best tradition of these eShop threads, they are the worst thing that can happen to your wallet.
Agreed. And you Sir, are to blame for most of my impulse buys. Thanks for putting me onto Space Dave!

tolkir thanks once again for the incredible work you put into this each month!

Lost Child supposed to be good? I have had mixed results with Kadokawa games. Natural Doctrine was not great, but enjoyed God Wars on PS4.(may get Switch version as well later this year)

Ys VIII, Lumines, Sushi Striker and Lost Sea have my interest as well.

I really hope Ys 8 runs decently on the Switch, I held off on the PS4 version to grab it. I'm not expecting 60fps, but hopefully a stable 30 is there.

Yay, Mario Tennis Aces demo tomorrow. Also Blazblue, Lumines Remastered, & Musynx despite getting them on different platforms. If I could use bluetooth headphones on my Switch, I would gladly get Lumines Remastered & Musynx for the sole purpose of being able to use headphones to listen to the game.

I'd get Sushi Striker but waaaay too many other games coming out this month. Not to mention the possible E3 surprise "available now" announcement that might happen.

Great OP of course, but I think Ikaruga deserves to be in the main recommendations category.

I will say two things:

I purchased 'A Magical High School Girl' in Steam back in the release day because I'm a weak person buying every Japanese roguelike released in English.

And I think that 'Dragon Fang Z' and 'Yodanji' are much better for people looking for traditional turn based roguelikes.

'Dragon Fang Z' as an ambitious game using the same layout of 'Shiren the Wanderer', and most importantly, with the same high production values and level of content.

And 'Yodanji' as the perfect coffee break roguelike for short sessions.

And the second thing is that I'm HIGHLY hyped with 'Shape of the World'.

I have been waiting for this game since 2015, and it was one of the latest things that I was expecting to see released in a Nintendo system.

If the performance is good in the Switch version, I'm sure inn.

Favorite thread on ERA :)

Playing IKARUGA at the moment. Tho I can't get any higher than a B rank for level 1, lol
17 people on my friends list playing it, woah! Proud of you guys :')

You sure mate? I see no controller orientation setting in there, only the screen (TATE) which is frankly absurd but hopefully I'm just blind to it and it's there somewhere

Sorry, you are right, and that's what I thought you meant! I guess they assume most people will remove the joycons to play in TATE mode. A weird oversight.

I think that I need some help with 'Pirate Pop Plus'.

How is the logic of the magnets?

Will they change the orientation of the screen in a random way, or can they be controlled with some type of action by the player?

Also, I'm trying to find some guide with tips for scoring without success.

I remember when digital manuals explaining every mechanic in a game were still a thing in Nintendo consoles.

I finally got around to playing a few runs of Death Road to Canada, and I quite enjoy the game. This isn't a game you play over and over trying to perfect your runs like other roguelikes. Death Road feels more like a game you pop on every so often and have fun. Which is exactly what I wanted (I'm not generally into roguelikes).

My only disappointment is when a run ends. Suddenly. There's no game over screen with stats like how many days you made it, how many zombies you smashed, how many bandits you uncounted, whatever. That would make runs even more fun.

These threads have become my favorite. I love indie games and my Switch. It's awesome finding like minded people! Looking forward to a fun June after May murdered my bank account.

Whew, after 2+ weeks of daily play totaling 36 hours I finally finished Battle Chasers: Nightwar. It is far and away my favorite game so far this year. The gameplay is excellent and was the main driver in my continued interest. Status effects have a meaningful impact, skills and perks build off of each other, characters play a specific role but can be tuned and have skills necessary to 'multi-class' into other builds; it just kinda goes on and on and is pure gold the whole way. The art style is also right up my alley leaning more towards classic D&D as opposed to Tolkien fantasy, and the actual assets are done in a great style - presumably matching the comic. A common complaint in the last thread was around the story (or lack thereof) which I think actually benefited the game in the long run, at least for me. It allowed me to focus on actually learning the systems and the later half of the adventure starts to add a few additional layers to the plot. The game totally impressed me in all aspects and, perhaps most importantly, it never dipped in quality throughout the whole campaign. It started at a good point and only grew.

The only thorn in my experience with the game is the Switch port. It's not amazing, nor is it terrible. Load times are long up front and there are consistent frame rate problems when exploring dungeons. Actual battles are fine, but those are turn based so they better be. I also found the HD rumble a bit overdone. Playing the game on mute while other people were reading or sleeping in the same room was pretty much impossible because of how loud the rumble was. It also started to hurt my hands after a bit (apparently I am a baby?). Anyway you can turn it off, which I did, and I didn't really feel like I was missing out in doing so.

The game ends on a bit of a cliff hanger - one of those 'there is a greater evil out there' type of deals. Since the story wasn't the hook I'm not too beat up about it and hopefully it means a sequel is in production. I'll be there day one.

Heck yeah, new thread!

After a slow few months, last month was absolutely savage with releases. To the point I was even kind of annoyed lol

While the eShop has quickly become home to a fantastic library of games, I can't help but fear what it might become when I see stuff like this make it on to the shop. Hopefully they see what a dumpster fire Steam has become and steer clear. Does Nintendo have any standards for stuff being published in NA? I suppose it's possible this game is localized to some extent, but you wouldn't think so from the screenshots!

Can't believe Nintendo approves shit like this. When it comes to the eShop, it seems they're so enamored and flattered to have devs throwing their stuff on it that they're happily accepting absolutely everything.
