I don't know how that person would know what profile or level of DV was used, unless they were in charge of, or associated with, the mastering of the movie.

Either I missed something, or it went over my head, but I don't see much specifics about how the two different profile layers differ. It only seems to mention strings for detection of which layer profile it is.
Sony had a big fiasco with their TVs when they finally pushed out Dolby Vision. Their TVs were updated to use a specific profile of Dolby Vision and it required the connected devices to "catch up." I remember a lot of grumpy people on AVSForum at the time. :P

But you pretty much have it right. From what I understand, the different profiles contain metadata on how the display device should best process the DV video stream.

EDIT
Sony implemented a low-latency profile, which put some of the processing on the connected device's end to decode.

Eh, the DNR it's bad in some scenes, but not bad in others. Some scenes look really great, but it's uneven. For me, it was worth the $10 I paid, but I wouldn't spend more than that.

Posted this in the anime thread but I think here may have been more appropiate so...
What are the best English friendly Blu-Ray releases to get of Ghibli films? I've been avoiding the StudioCanal UK ones that (for the cel animated films) had extra DNR applied to them. Are the US GKids ones any good?
I see some posts elsewhere saying some of the Japanese re-releases have been DNR'd too? It's a shame if that's the case. :(

It's so irritating that the UK/Ireland have to wait an extra 3 weeks for the Infinity War UHD, especially as it released earlier over here in the cinema. It's been tough avoiding spoilers for this long

4K discs are region free. Order from Amazon US. If Amazon doesn't work and you don't want to wait, PayPal me the cost, I'll pick up a copy on release day at Target on the 14th and mail it to you.

So yesterday I decided to redeem my digital codes for UHD movies, so I could watch them away from home as well. What a damn mess that system is. It's crazy that there's a literal Google Docs spreadsheet to figure out how to best redeem those codes.

That's the joys of UV. MA has resolved those issues. Redeem at MA, and know exactly what you're getting.

That's an extremely generous offer, I may take you up on that. In the meantime you are welcome to my Pacific Rim Uprising 4K code.

Fandango Now has Fox movies in 4K UHD as well. The ones I redeemed on iTunes transferred to 4K there with Movies Anywhere.

The whole situation with them is annoying me. The were 18 months late to the UHD party and when they did show up the output has been lazy and substandard, despite having some of the most popular films in the world. Their back catalogue releases are non existent (where the utter fuck is Rogue One). I'll bet avengers 1 and 2 are lazy upscales as well.
Ever since Disney finally started releasing 4K discs, my belief has been that we'll get the full Star Wars back catalogue in 4K with the home video/digital release of Episode IX. I expect we'll get a wide variety of new box sets in various formats, likely with updated branding and features.

Recently it appears that Disney's back catalogue approach appears to be tying reissues to the release of newer movies. See Incredibles with Incredibles 2, and Avengers + Ultron with Infinity War. So that seems to line up a bit.

I would say so. Disney UHD is the only major thing it lacks, but I'm in Apple's corner when it comes to pricing, so I'm glad they're holding out. It does have Fox UHD, which none of the other services have. Not sure how the Disney acquisition will affect that.

Apple also has pretty insane sales on UHD movies. I've gotten lots of good movies for $5-10. Got the whole MI collection for $30. No other platform matches them there.
Although it's not very popular, pretty sure Fandango Now has FOX UHD. I had to buy The Greatest Showman from there because it was my only 4k option at the time.

edit: literally addressed a few posts above me. nvmm

Ah, didn't think of Fandango. Thought maybe Apple had some exclusive. Makes me wonder why Vudu and Google don't have the 4k Fox movies.

Unfortunately, it looks like the audio still has the same issue as the last few releases from Disney.

they ain't gonna fix it anytime soon as no one seems to be complaining about it on a large scale

Testing out the 4K player now with the only 4K disc I have, The Incredibles. Looks nice. Noticeably nicer than the 4K streaming version.

Might pick up some more movies tomorrow if I get the chance. In the meantime, I'm gonna see how some regular Blu-rays and DVDs look on it.

Edit: Damn, Blu-rays look really great on this. I mean, they always looked great, but I think the quality seems nicer than when I tried them on the PlayStation 4 Pro. They also load a lot faster than on that.

Edit 2: Yeah, I tried out a Blu-ray disc that had noticeable compression and pixelation when upscaled on the PlayStation 4 Pro, but I don't see any on this 4K player. Just nice, clear picture. Looks so good!

Edit 3: DVDs look okay. Not great, but perfectly watchable.

I just found out yesterday that my local Family Video now has 4k discs for rent. I've been amassing a sizable collection of 4k movies on iTunes purely based on price and convenience, but I'm excited to have the option to rent physical discs now.

Might get Pacific Rim Uprising this weekend from them.

I need to stop falling for Best Buy's steelbooks. The vast majority of the time I don't like the cover and the $5 premium adds up.

Your avatar plus name-dropping Family Video definitely has me pegging you as a Hoosier.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is a stellar disc! The picture quality is top-notch and the Atmos mix is fun and engaging.

Guilty, lol. The only other ones I saw were Thor Ragnarok, Logan and TLJ but I'm sure there's more.

The Last Jedi is good enough, but not as good as it should be. And it suffers from Disney's Atmos-itis. I can't speak for Thor: Ragnarok, but Logan is also a damned good disc. I can't speak for the Atmos mix, as I watched it before I upgraded, but it's supposed to be a mix, as well.

TLJ is one of the few 4k discs I own. I was pretty underwhelmed, to be honest. Thor Ragnarok I have in 4k via Vudu and that was treat to watch.

I didn't hear all of Logan's Atmos track, but the casino seizure is a top tier demo moment for sure.
The Gal Pal hasn't seen Logan and has saying for a while she wants to. I had forgotten that the 4K UHD disc comes in bother original theatrical presentation and black and white. I don't know which version I'd show her! I've not yet watched the Noir version, so the selfish part of me says B&W. Haha!

Noir's interesting. There are some really good landscape shots but overall it looks like a color film converted to b&w. I'd say start with color. The standard Fox intro is also replaced with an old school "20th Century Fox Presents a Cinemascope Film" intro too. That was pretty cool.

I use small speakers (KEF eggs specifically) for my 5.1 setup. That would make adding 2 upward firing almost speakers difficult - so am I looking at in-ceiling?

If you can do in-ceiling (own your property, for example), do it. Up-firing speakers, as good as they may (or may not) be, having overhead sound truly come from overheard is, unequivocally, the better choice.

So, nowhere near the work that was done for Fury Road's B&W version?

Wait, does anyone know if the digital editions of Logan have the noir version? I got that on the cheap in iTunes a few months ago but haven't watched it yet since I'd already seen it.

*edit*

Just checked on iTunes, it does indeed. Sweet.

I've only seen bits and pieces of Black and Chrome so I can't make a definite call. I'll put it this way: Every now and then there's a shot in Noir that looks like an B&W Instagram filter was applied to it if that makes sense. It just looks ever so slightly off.

Man, I should have waited and spent a few more bucks to get the 4K disc version of The Mummy (1999) for future proofing when I got it a few months ago. I just compared the Blu-ray running on the 4K player to the 4K streaming version on Fandango Now that I got thanks to the free iTunes upgrade, and the new remaster they did for the 4K just looks absolutely amazing, and makes the Blu-ray look awful in comparison (even though it's not "bad," just looks dated). I never even watched the Blu-ray copy. I haven't watched the movie since maybe the early 2000s, on my original release DVD copy. Heh. Maybe I'll just pick up the 4K trilogy set some day during a sale.

Though I can of course just watch the 4K streaming version...though Fandango Now sometimes randomly glitches out the video where I'll end up with a messy screen, though that only seems to happen when you fast-forward/rewind or first start it up, but it last a few seconds.

It's a great transfer! I bought the disc a few weeks back after hearing how good the 4K UHD Blu-Ray was; it's a fun movie, if nothing else, but the transfer is excellent and the DTS:X mix utilizes all the speakers well.

I respect everyone here that goes for streaming. The price and convenience is nice, but I just can't. It's physical or nothing for me. I need that high bit rate and lossless sound! Oh, and I like seeing my library on the shelf, too.

EDIT
I'd make an exception for The Nice Guys on VUDU, 'cause it's the only way to see the movie in 4K and I'm pretty certain it's Dolby Vision, too. That movie, as my friend says, is the "gift that keeps on giving." Shane Black being behind The Predator is the only reason why it's on my radar.

That first picture of streaming Incredibles can't be right. I wonder if your settings are wrong for that "App" input on your TV? Where were you streaming from? Looks like the disc is HDR while the stream isn't, although it could just be the picture

Both are the disc. It's just the angle and camera brightness. I just wanted to show off the player in the first pic.

oh, hahahaha my bad. Would you say the streaming version looks better than if you had the bluray in the UHD player? My thinking is that the HDR should set it over your usual bluray quality

I'll try it shortly and see.

Edit: Just tested the Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, and 4K streaming. All three versions look really similar, though I think the HDR and slightly sharper image help the streaming and 4K disc versions look better overall. But they're all pretty close in quality, I'd say, and all great ways to watch it.
It's a great transfer! I bought the disc a few weeks back after hearing how good the 4K UHD Blu-Ray was; it's a fun movie, if nothing else, but the transfer is excellent and the DTS:X mix utilizes all the speakers well.
It really, really is. Huge improvement over all previous releases. Just wish I had it on disc. Hah. Someday, I'll get around to that...though it seems like no stores have it locally right now. Shame.

I think I'll be picking up some 4K discs tomorrow morning. Just gotta see where would be best to go, and also...what to get. Haha. I don't think I'll be picking up any movies I already own on Blu-ray any time soon unless it's an older movie with a great new remaster like The Mummy has, so I'll get stuff I don't have yet. I'm thinking maybe Starship Troopers as one option. Not sure what else yet. I've lately mostly just wanted to buy Disney movies, but not many are out in 4K. Though seeing how good the ones I do own on Blu-ray looked upscaled to 4K, I think I'm fine just picking up the Blu-rays for now. Who knows when they'll get around to 4K versions...

Watched Matrix tonight on UHD disc and while I never had the blu ray, oh boy. The UHD disc sure was pretty.
