I watched DasTactic's first, and I only started with GeneralConfusion today.

Somehow I'm starting to wonder whether it might be a game that's better enjoyed watching someone who knows the systems and explain them over playing it yourself...
In Dominions, there is a very expensive-to-cast spell called Wish. When you cast it a text box appears asking what you want to wish for. Want infinite money? Okay. Want to steal someone's god? Of course.

You can naturally Wish for infinite wishes, which lets you cast the spell every turn. Oh and you can also just straight up wish for the apocalypse to happen which kills off a large chunk of every player's population. Great if you are into necromancy.

What a game.

Age of Wonders 3 collection is on sale on Steam at the moment. It goes on my backlog along with Endless Legend. Will have to decide which to play first when I'm next in the mood for 4X...

Yeah me too. Watched a Lets Play, really intriguing premise but presentation was hard to get into.

In other news, today I also added upcoming 4X game Pax Nova to my Steam wish list. Doesn't seem like it does anything new with the genre, but it looks pretty and we can't get enough of 4X can we?

Looks like... Civ on the ground and space 4X in space in one game...? Okay, that's... quite a pitch.

Haven't looked at Pax Nova's gameplay, but my gut fear is that the space/ground thing will have the same issue as in Eador: Masters of the Broken World, where all of the ground stuff gets hella repetitive because of the sheer scale of what you're doing. And if there's automation that will just kinda defeat the point of having it to begin with (not like what's happening with Stellaris).

Yeah, considering the new upcoming expansion Civ VI Gold is basically a must have.

Separately I recommend Endless Space 2. It's a great Space 4x. It could be better, sure, but still a great game and being well supported.

Stellaris is interesting but I wound up not digging it overall.

Welcome to your new life. Check out GeneralConfusions guides on YouTube if you feel lost.

Expect to fail early a number of times before you start learning what does and doesn't work against the independent troops in the first few turns. Usually have to give a new nation a couple tries before I understand their strengths and weaknesses.

ES2 is legit great now. Was not hot on it at launch but they've put in a bunch of work. Similarly, Stellaris is way better now, but I'm eagerly watching the next major patch/expac - they're finally revamping planetary development! No more tile micromanagement. ONce that's done with, all that's really left in terms of seeping wounds from launch is the really terrible Federation system.

What I really miss is Sword of the Stars. Damn shame how 2 went down.

I'm so hyped for the Stellaris xpac. It got a date right around Smash Ultimate in early December... which I'm also looking forward to.

Life is tough.

Oh man, SotS2. I wanna say that era was really rough for indie strategy games, between SotS2 and King Arthur the Roleplaying Wargame 2. Stardock's Elemental: War on Magic might have been in that same period too, now that I think of it...

If anyone's not aware, all three were utter disasterous releases that killed their respective franchises, because of how buggy and ill-conceived they were. It was a dark time. (And, ok, Elemental lives on as "Fallen Enchantress" but Stardock did everything they could to distance themselves from it as they were apologising for its sorry state, resulting in a kinda-sorta sequel, Elemental: Fallen Enchantress being released shortly afterwards, with Elemental owners getting every sequel for free or something... Elemental was a big scandal at the time.)

Honestly, I liked all of them okay at the time, lol. Was a beta tester for Elemental to boot!

And honestly I think King Arthur's name killed it harder than anything else. What a mouthful.

Elemental sucked. Fallen Enchantress was alright once patched up but wasn't super exciting.

King Arthur 1 actually was quite good. Then hubris struck and they tried to bite off too much and sequel crashed and burned. Kind of like with Cossacks games. First was surprisingly fun. And then it went south. Didn't try the third one.

Anyway, shall wait and see on Stellaris expansion. It certainly "sounds" good but we have seen the promises with last two xpacs. I am still bitter about how vanilla the travel system is now.

Overall, I am getting tired of Paradox never ending DLC streams. Hearts of Iron IV turned out to be meh. Stellaris was a lot less then it could be and I want EU V by now be buying up DLCs. At least CK2 newest expansion looks damn good.

Anyway, enough of my complains. Get Endless Space 2!

Edit: Forgot to add that Age of Wonders 3 with expansions is a great fantasy 4x game. And their next games sounds even better.

I'm actually looking forward to Age of Wonders: Planetfall because I feel like there aren't as many good sci-fi oriented 4X/Strategy games compared to Fantasy or Historical ones. I haven't really delved into my library of 4X games in awhile, but I'm also excited for the Civ expansion coming in February, and the new Stellaris expansion.

Endless Legend is maybe the 4X I'd offer as my favorite overall, as sort of a hybrid between Fantasy and Sci-Fi, though it's not without flaws, and certainly doesn't have a large community compared to some other titles in the genre. There is mod support, but without much of a playerbase, I don't think too many mods have been created.

I should give Endless Space 2 a whirl again, but I'm missing the latest big DLC for it, so I'd want that before devoting time to some games.

Also an Amplitude title (but not a 4X), I never really played much Dungeon of the Endless -- really should carve out some time for that.

Actually that latest large DLC that introduced Behemoths and such is a bit meh. I bought it but play without it as it turns into the game of who can build Behemoths faster for that "WIN" button which kind of makes game the end game useless.

On the other hand some of the smaller DLCs were quite good and patches brought the game up a notch.

Also love Endless Legend, btw, it would take AoW3, Endless Space 2 and Civ 5 over it overall. Still very good.

Fellow 4X fans, I have a question about Endless Legend. I haven't played the game yet, but I've got every DLC for it except Inferno. I'll probably get it at some point, but am not in a hurry. Would you say it's perfectly fine to play the game without it, or is it something you consider essential to the experience? Not so much the faction you can play, but other mechanics the DLC introduces to the game no matter what faction you play.

Thanks for the help!

I think its perfectly fine to play it without Inferno. The majority of my time with the game predated that dlc so in my mind at least it is hardly essential. Shadows and Shifters are the two most important dlcs in my opinion, I link so much of Endless Legends unique identity as a 4x to the winter mechanics that it weird to think of the game without them in.

Seeing as we're discussing Endless Legend (and Age of Wonders 3 above), what're your guys thoughts on the unit customization/tactical combat that seems obligatory to a lot of fantasy 4x?

Honestly, I... can't say I'm a fan. It always feels kind of bolted-on, something to micromanage rather than something that really contributes in the same way ship design in good space 4x does. Too many little fiddley bits, not enough big changes.

Age of Wonders 3 kinda feels like a tactical fantasy game with a 4X bolted on top, more than the other way around. I've only played the story though, and only for 15 hours, so it might be a lot different in skirmish amd multiplayer.

I think I'll always take unit variety over unit customization, though sometimes they are sort of the same thing (e.g. Dom 5 nations with a bunch of troops but all basically the same chassis with different weapons).

AoW3's campaign balance gets kind of whack towards the end of a campaign, with heroes being so OP , and enemies being so numerous, that it's just a procession of battles towards the end. I actually feel like it's a testament to how good AoW3 is that the campaign's shift in focus from the map (getting resources to build armies) to the battle screen (using all those armies to win) works as well as it does.

It's a really good 4X--the best fantasy one, IMO.

And in terms of unit customisation, I feel like a lot of fantasy and space 4Xes have tried unit designs and kinda failed at it? It's always so finickity that it gets annoying, or doesn't matter to begin with. Like you have to give enough flexibility for unit designs to be distinct, but at the same time making it painless to use on a grand scale over a long period of time... which are kinda antithetical goals.

I'd say Stellaris does it best (tying the designs into both combat in a rock-paper-scissors sort of way, alongside the strategic map via researching debris) and even there it's pretty irritating at times.

Overall, I like unit customisation in concept a lot more than in practice. I'd love every faction to be unique--to be honest I'm kinda over prefab factions, a la Civilization.

There a few years (3? 4?) between the last expansion and Inferno. Inferno was a surprise because everyone assumed EL was abandonned by then and Amplitude was working on 2 different DLC for Endless Space 2.
What I mean is that you'd be playing a game that was considered complete for 3 years by all the players.
The Inferno guys are fun, don't get me wrong, but they're just "an extra civilization added on top of the others". Nothing groundbreaking.
(Their scenario is great though)

Yeah, haven't gotten Inferno either and Endless Legend is fine without it as it's been for years.

For Age of Wonder III and other similar games, I like some customization or at least units being able to gain XP and skills a bit. AoW does tactical fantasy combat quite well overall so that little bit of extra unit stuff and Heroes add a lot of fun to it.

As to preference of something like AoW vs Civ , completely different games. Yeah, it's broadly the same genre but they kind of hit different spots as Civ is strategic at its heart (well, kind of, it's a bit weird) while AoW has a lot of tactical elements.

Plus Civ needs to be at least somewhat close to "reality" vs Space 4x or fantasy 4x games.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've got a backlog so I won't be playing it for a while, but I saw Inferno on sale and wondered how essential it was to the experience. It's got some kinda eclipse event which seemed like it affects every faction.

Anyway, I'm neck deep in EU4 at the moment, drowning in modifiers, lol. After that I'm going to need a break from war and conquests, and will probably play Football Manager. I need to cycle through genres or playing one genre constantly becomes too much for my tired brain. Endless Legend will be the next 4X genre I play though, I love that it's got a nice variety of victory conditions, something that irked me greatly about Civ V.

Yeah, the aurora/eclipse/whatever thing with the volcanic guys... I didn't really get it. I love the summer/winter cycle of this game, and when you play on the sea the weather is also amusing, but adding an extra layer of micro-modifiers was pushing it a bit too fat for me.

One thing I noticed in the Endless games recently is that I generally like the lore so much that I spent my first game with any faction to run for the scenario ending. I actually don't have most of the achievements for any other victory types in either game...

Been playing some Civ4 Colonization again recently, and yeah, sucks that this game was so rushed and that there is no original mode, since quite a few of the changes are pretty bad. Still pretty cool to have Colonization in multiplayer!

The more I play with the Le Guin update the more I think they need to tweak the pop promotion/demotion system. It's annoying that I get unemployed pops when I change a building cause they pick from the worker pool rather than reuse the specialists that the previous building was using. Also maybe make promotion have a delay like demotion.

I like the revamped economy otherwise though. Resources actually matter now rather than having 10k everything in like 100 years.

Damn, Warhammer 40,000: Gladius is my new crack. All war, no diplomacy, one army left standing.
The combat is always my favorite part of 4X games and I always find it disappointing gearing up an army in Civ just to lose because someone saved all their money.

Man, I've spent a decent amount of time with Stellaris' Le Guin update and I'm loving it. The changes to how population works had a much grander effect than I anticipated. Because now planets actually go through stages--they start off as lowly, useless colonies, graduate to rural worlds without a specialisation, and later on the new building mechanics encourage you to specialise it in some way. And the best part is, the game recognises this and gives them a flavourful label with a slight bonus for that specialisation.

And the pop changes are genius. On top of working more elegantly in terms of mechanics, they're hella flavourful, too. You'll have core worlds with highly stratified populations (so a large amount of specialists and leaders, few workers) and other worlds with huge worker populations. But as they progress and specialise, the advanced jobs will lift pops into a higher strata (workers for raw materials, specialists for resources). It makes everything so much more elegant and logical.

Overall, it has made the infrastructure/pop game of Stellaris into a game of its own. It's much more intuitive and engaging compared to the almost set-and-forget system pre-Le Guin used.

Stellaris is truly the best it's ever been, and feels like a whole new game, now. Highly recommand it.

Warlock: Master of the Arcane is the first one that jumps to mind. What I saw of Gladius reminded me of it a lot. It's like Civ5 if it was purely combat. Heard some bad stuff about Warlock 2, but never played it for myself, unfortunately.

You might also like Age of Wonders 3 a lot, if you're into its turn-based combat. Conquest is the name of the game.

LeGuin pop/building optimization is a game in and of itself, honestly. There's so much going on! So far, I had been going for early Monument, but a recent early loss has me considering an Alloy factory for my first open building - it's such a bottleneck if you have aggressive neighbors.

It's such a great upgrade.

Probably not the game for you then. Though don't think it's CIV with everything cut out but the bland combat. The combat is leagues better than Civ with lots of options to research and mold your army. I am on my third game and have only played as the Space Marine faction. Each game my army and tactics have been different enough that I still feel I am learning that faction.

Maybe Age of Wonders 3 would be up your alley? Its combat is more similar to Heroes of Might and Magic while still having a decently deep non-combat parts of the game, unlike Total War.

Stellaris is trying to bridge 4x with Grand Strategy. With the new economic update there is a lot more micro that might be polished later on, but no idea how the will implement it.

Yeah the sector system feels out of place right now. With auto-generated sectors its existence just feels extraneous.

I suspect the groundwork that's currently there will play into future diplomacy & the inevitable galactic congress systems that have to be coming in a future xpac. The sort of system that will give pops a voice in and beyond the empire they're in, beyond simple unrest. It will also open up a lot of room for interactions uniting against the more malevolent empires in the galaxy (fanatic purifiers, devouring swarms, crises) and possibly more diplomatic-oriented ones, too (say, handling a galaxy-wide pox, deciding AI rights galaxy-wide, dealing with ascendant superpowers, etc).

Or making federations actually work.

(they said that next big change is political, as they want to give federations something to do).

Still, the next update is probably going to be something minor / story related. My guess is organic / silicon based species as they pretty much said that the new system allowed for easier modability of building and pop costs, being able to use other type of things. And they will be some of the remaining sci-fi staples stellaris doesnt have.

Current top list of desired system fixes/improvements/features:
1. Federation rework. They're aggressively bad right now. Managing the Fed fleet is a nightmare since as soon as the AI gets their hands on it it's likely to completely ruin your composition and ship designs, not to mention totally misuse it, and outside of that, there's just... nothing there. Inter- and intra- federation politics needs to be a thing.
2. AI combat prowess is real bad right now. They're much better at building up a navy but absolutely terrible at using it. The number of times I've seen them just sorta... get into a war and then leave their fleets on their home system while the enemy rushes in is staggering.
3. Galactic UN. Even something as limited as Gal Civ's would be nice, some way for everybody in the galaxy to collectively associate with tying themselves together at the hip.
4. Intrigue/espionage system. Just a must.
5. Sector rework. Like you mentioned, they don't really seem to do anything right now other than force you to hire extra Governors. I'm not even sure autobuild does anything right now.
