Since Era has long running challenges that cover both video games and films/books I figured why not have one for music? I've waited for two or three years now hoping someone else would've made one but it hasn't happened yet and I'll just attempt it myself. This is my first time making a thread, let alone a challenge or anything of the sort so bear with me a bit.

---

Rules:
- I want this to be a pretty laid back thing. If you aren't a fan of any particular element feel free to work around them/ignore things.
- As a baseline, 50 new music releases listened to for the first time in 2018 might be a good goal. (If you shoot for 50 releases in 2018 that comes to about one release a week (if pacing yourself) while giving you a bit of wiggle room to skip one or two weeks.)
- I know for some 50 releases will come really easily but I wanted to set a baseline that wasn't too difficult. Feel free to set your own goal(s). I'm personally trying to hit at least 50 new to me albums in addition to 50 releases that drop in 2018 for a total of 100.
- Join whenever you want, there's no cut-off.
- Share your progress in here, feel free to write about what you're listening to (or don't), ask for or give recs, and so forth.
- Go ahead and keep updating your original/master post but at the end of each month make a new monthly update so I can update the progress lists/leaderboards.

FAQs:
What counts as a music release?: Use your judgement but pretty much any EP or full length album. If you're looking for a length example, try 30+ mins. I know some albums are shorter than 30 minutes and that's totally fine too, again anything I mention is just a suggestion. Singles obviously don't count.
What counts as new?: Any release you're listening to for the first time in 2018, regardless of when it originally came out.
What if it is really long/a double album?: Again, use your judgement. I'm not going to tell anyone what to do but I'd probs not count anything (even if it's reaaaaaally long) for more than 2.

Tips:
- Join Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, or Tidal if you haven't already.
- Spotify (this is the only one i have experience with so YMMV elsewhere) has great user based playlists and recommendations which can point you towards new stuff.
- Step outside of your comfort zone but don't push yourself. Don't listen to something that you're 100% sure you're gonna hate just because you want to try something new. Or at least don't do it often. It's a great way to get burnt out quickly.
- Make use of the various great Era music communities (Hip-Hop Era, Pop Era, Spotify Era, etc.), music websites, or this thread to find things of interest to you.
- Find your own niche. Really into a song by an artist you just got into? Work your way through their discography over time and that can be multiple additions to your list alone.

Update format:

- Please post your monthly updates in the following format.

USERNAME - xx/50 releases

1. Artist A - Album name
2. Artist B - EP name

---

This thread is really barebones and messy as of right now but I really wanted to try to start up a challenge like this for 2018. Please give me a bit as I try to get things together a bit further over time. Graphics/banners are an early priority.

Please don't post until I make a second post for the leaderboard/hall of fame.

Yay, you posted it!

Alright... 50 albums.
I have a really hard time finding new music I Iike. I am extremely picky, I guess. The usual way I find new songs to put in my playlist is by hearing it on radio or in the credits of a movie or game. I usually check out the artist but rarely find anything more by them that "clicks" (with a couple of exceptions ofc). I definitely have a hard time listening to a whole album because I get bored of the "sound". I also need to be in the right mood to even be able to listen to something I don't already know. So as you can imagine, this is really hard for me!
I do want to find new music to like tho, because I always play my small collection of songs until I am tired of them.

Edit: After a couple of albums I decided I wanted to listen to 50 different solo women!

Albums - 26/50
  1. Cœur de pirate - Roses
  2. Miriam Bryant - Bye Bye Blue

I'm interested, count me in. My daily mixes have been getting a little stale, so hopefully I can discover some new things.

Oh hell yeah. I listen to music more than I read, game, watch TV, and watch movies combined haha. I'm down to try this out.

Neat. If I understand correctly, do we make an initial post and edit it throughout the year? If so,

Yeah, you update this original post you just made but also at the end of each month make a new post that includes all of the albums you listened to from the new month so I can update the counts. If you have any further questions, just ask!

I listen to 100s per year already, so I'm posting mine in two parts, 2018 and non-2018.

There will probably be a lot of 3 and 4 star albums since I primarily listen to albums I expect I'll enjoy.

This is kinda one of my new years resolutions. I have a huge library and record collection. My plan was to listen to a different record a week, and listen to a different album (new or old) a day.

I'll jump in on this as well. Shouldn't be hard to listen to 50 new (to me) albums during the year.

Riversands - 47/50

Here we go, honey

Artist. Album. Year. Genre
1. BoA. Valenti. 2003. Japanese mellow dance pop
Sm Entertainment is a big korean music agency in North South Korea. At that time it was still a small company and wasnt as big as it is today. Their first artist, BoA broke through all japan with this new album and charted Oricon chart (japanese billboard) with a single song No.1, a lead track from this album. The song has been a hit until today and can be considered a BoA's trademark song. Despite of being a fan, this is literally my first time listening to the complete album. Why? Because she is literally releasing a new japanese album in february, so i wanted to check her past works. Btw she is 13 when she released this album in japan. And despite of being a kid, the songs are mostly mature. It's not about sex though. If you are not into japanese, and interested to know how japanese songs are in the past. Check one of this album

Score: 8.5/10

Expect this artist most on my next album play since she has been debuting since 12, and she has released plenty of complete albums. She is now 30 but she still looks 20

Please listen to:
No.1
Feel the same
B.i.o
Searching for truth
Milky way

2. IU. A Flower Bookmark Part II. 2017. 60s-00s (cover album)
IU is a korean idol that focuses more on vocal instead of being dancing machine. Every several years, she releases a cover album and her latest cover album is titled Flower Bookmark II. Even though the music sounds modern, half of them are from 60s and the rest are from early 2000. Songs that stand out the most are: Autumn Morning and Secret Garden.

Score: 7.8/10

I think the songs are okay, but the vocal is awesome. If you are more into a vocal person, you can try this album. And she is still 25

3. Infinite. Top Seed. 2018. Korean pop, bubble gum, ballad

4. Camilla. Camilla. 2018. American pop, trashpop, rnbjazz, ballad
The album is just bland to me. Some songs that stand out the most are Havana (which is boring due to being overplayed), Inside Out, Consequences, and In the Dark.

Score: 7.5/10

This is unfortunate since she has pretty good vocal, but the music arrangement just feels like anytype of music out there. No something special

5. Justin Timberlake. FutureSex. 2006. American pop, r&b, rock jazz

6. Utada Hikaru. Fantôme. 2016. Japanese pop, picarasque pop, mourning ballad
If you are Utada's fan, then I can say this is an album for you. For nonfans, I doubt this album will resonate well with you but you can try it. This album is actually a tribute to her mother who did a suicide three years ago. Even though the songs are mostly in japanese, you can still feel her sadness through her vocal and melody. Listen to her 人魚真夏の鳥雨、and 花畑を君に 、俺野彼女

Score: 7.8/10

7. Jonghyun. Poet. 2018. Korean pop, electro pop, contemporary pop, RnB, mourning ballad

8. Exo. Countdown. 2018. Japanese pop, dance pop, RnB, trash pop
The album doesnt contain any ballad. Literally. Except for the last track. As dance pop album, this is somehow greatly produced. The tracks are mostly influenced by american and british dance pop, some are indian latin inspired.

If your mood is good, this album can be very exciting to listen to. If not, well... you can try it.

Recommended tracks:
Electric Kiss
Coming Over
Tactix
Into My World

9. Justin Timberlake. Man in the Woods. 2018. American pop, gospel pop, folk, RnB.

10. BoA. Listen to My Heart. 2001. Japanese pop, RnB, rock ballad.

11. The Shins. Worm's Hole. 2018. American Alternative Rock

12. Momoland. Great!. 2018. Korean pop, british influenced pop, bubble gum
Recommended tracks: bboom bboom

13. Yasutaka Nakata. Digital Native. 2018. Japanese edm. American pop edm. Tropical house

14. Wanna One. 1+1=0. 2018. Korean hard pop. Trashpop

15. BoA. 1SHOT2SHOT. 2018. Korean deep house music. RnB. Hiphop. Techno pop.
BoA's new album has now hit the store. In her entire 20 year career as a north korean dancing singer, this is her first EP. 1shot 2 shot is a story about sex and party. 1 shot 2 shot refers to how men ejaculate during sex. This track contains very mature content not suitable for children. Fortunately, the song is in korean so some wont notice the adult material. Recommended tracks: 1shot 2 shot, Everybody Knows, Your Song, Nega Dola, Camo

16. BoA. 私のこのままでいいのかな. 2018. Japanese pop, RnB, dance pop, dance jazz, ballad
Recommended tracks: Where Am I Now?, Jazzclub, Crow, ありがとうサヨナラ , Mannish Chocolate, Lookbook, このままでいいのかな

17. Keyakizaka46. Garasu no Ware. 2018. Japanese dance pop, ballad, country japanese ballad

18. Tvxq. Rise as God. 2015. Korean pop, korean edm, heavy pop, deep house, RnB
Originally they used to be 5 members, but split into 2 due to...yes.. money. It's literally about money. Other 3 split because their income was considered low despite of super duper deva mindblown popularity. Right now, they are being considered as King of Korean Pop in pyongyang Seoul in term of music quality. If you compare them to Bigbang and Bts. Dont. It's because tvxq excels more in music quality. Their fans even literally admit that

Recommended tracks: Rise as One, Champagne, Vertigo

19. Tvxq. With. 2014. Japanese pop, Japanese rnb

20. TVXQ. Chance of Love. 2018. Korean bubble gum, korean pop, ballad, funky ballad.

21. BoA. Unchained. 2018. Japanese acid jazz pop

22. BTS. Face Yourself. 2017. Japanese pop, japanese rock dance, ballad dance

23. Stray Kids. I am Not. 2018. Korean rock dance

24. Twice. What is Love?. 2018. Korean bubble gum, korean b-side pop

25. BTS. Love Yourself: Tears. 2018. Korean alt rock, RnB, hip hop

26. SES. Remember. 2017. Kpop oldies, bubble gum

27. Shinee. Story of Light Part 1. 2018. 90s/00s Kpop, electronic kpop, vintage pop

28. Shinee. Story of Light Part 2. 2018. Kpop, upbeat kpop, electronic kpop

29. Blackpink. Square Up. 2018. Kpop, edm

30. Taeyeon. Something New. 2018. Kpop, RnB, ballad

31. Shinee. Story of Light Part 3. 2018. Kpop, mourning pop, ballad

Definitely in. 50 albums I haven't heard should be achievable considering I did double that this year

Would everybody be interested in weekly "what's new" posts that highlight new releases of note and maybe older releases that are having significant anniversaries that week?

Also the amount of people who have posted/reserved places so far is a lot more than I anticipated. Thank you so much!

OK this is interesting and might be a ton of fun. Thank you for putting this up! This might be doable and open up a lot of new music for me.

SZA - Ctrl (2017)
I'm not sure why I put this off for so long, but it's a great R&B release. Hooked me from the very beginning
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Polygondwanaland (2017)
I think 5 albums in one year was a little ambitious. I kind of grew tired of their sound throughout the year. There are subtle differences between the albums, but overall their sound was the same for the most part.
OCS - Memory of a Cut Off Head (2017)
Orc was one of my top 10 albums of 2017, and I completely missed this release for whatever reason. While it's not in the same vein, it's still an enjoyable, more laid back album.
ГШ (Glintshake) - ОЭЩ МАГЗИУ (2016)
Saw these guys pop up on KEXP the other day and instantly fell in love with their sound.
Baths - Romaplasm (2017)
Julian Casablancas + The Voidz - Tyranny (2014)

Sure, what the hell. I'll update this post throughout the year.

Darksol - 01/50 releases

1. Brand New - Science Fiction

Reviews

Jan 1st, 2018 - "Science Fiction" by Brand New.

Verdict: Brand New at the top of their game. Their most cohesive and emotional work since The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. If rumours of a band breakup are true, this is a hell of an album to leave on.

Edit: wait...are we literally just making lists? If this is just a list thread I'm out.

rating scale 1/2★ to ★★★★★
4★-5★ are great albums with the addition of personal importance, highly subjective.
2★-3★ are where most my ratings fall, ranging from tolerable and salvageable to those in heavy rotation.
<★-1★ are albums i actively did not enjoy, nor do i believe are worth revisiting, ranging from the annoying to the offensive.

2018 - 2/50

Jeff Rosenstock - Post- (Polyvinyl) ★★★1/2

This was a fantastic surprise on New Year's Day. Released immediately and for free even though he just moved up to a larger indie label (Polyvinyl), Jeff Rosenstock is one of the most important figures in the modern punk scene. Post- continues in the tradition of WORRY (one of 2016's best) and We Cool? but is in many ways the natural evolution of everything he's done previously.

I feel like he has been taking cues from Titus Andronicus with 7+ minute long punk anthems, but he also takes a page out of his own book by slowing things down when he feels necessary. Can't wait to spend more time with this.

Talons' - After Talons' ★★★

I am still unsure of what this is supposed to be exactly, but TALONS' is one of my favorite singer-songwriter/folk projects. It's the first thing he's released in 6 years and he caps off his description of the album by saying "Thank you for sticking around for this one. This is the best I can do."The desperation is palpable as it works in concert with an uneasy contentment. An album for 30-year olds who aren't sure what the future holds for them as they cling to the past.

Love it. (technically released Dec. 29th, 2017, but it will count as a 2018 album for me)

Non-2018 - 0/50

I'm in! I'm used to the 5 star format as I'm on RYM so I'll use that as well. Gonna use half steps, too, though.

★: Hated it
★★: Boring
★★★: Interesting for a listen or two
★★★★: Good/great. Will go in my rotation.
★★★★★ : Personal classic. Will help shape my taste.

2018 releases: 43/50

★★January albums★★

1. Shining - X - Varg utan flock - Depressive Black Metal. I feel like this album is confused. There are like 4 or so vocal styles on this, and I don't feel they work together. You'll have a cool atmospheric moment, and then chuggy brolic riffs, then they'll take the same riffs and black metallify it with blast beats and all that. There are some incredible moments in here, but it's just a weird package overall. ★½

2. Weedpecker - III -
Psychedelic Rock. It's good, but the main problem is it's too been there done that. I felt like I heard all these riffs before. ★★★

3. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Wrong Creatures -
Indie Rock/Garage Rock. My introduction to them. Given their name and the name of this album, I guess I expected something more dirty, risk taking, and exciting. ★★½

4. Berner - The Big Pescado
- West Coast Hip Hop/Gangsta Rap. Friend of mine mentioned the producer of this album contributed a lot to The Chronic 2001. You can tell. Rapping ranges from so so to good. Couple skippables. ★★★½

5. Jeff Rosenstock - Post -
Indie Rock/Power Pop. I like the energy and the riffing of the album. However there are some annoying vocal moments all over this. ★★½

6. Sinistro - Sangue Cássia -
Atmospheric Sludge Metal. Solid album from this Portuguese band. ★★★½

7. Planet Asia - The Golden Buddha
- West Coast Hip Hop. Good rapper and the production sounds nice. However the actual beats are forgettable. He throws in some Buddhist subjects here and there which is cool. ★★★

8. Portal - ION
- Death Metal. All style no substance. I really wish they'd learn how to string their riffs together better cuz they'd be really great. ★★½

9. Tribulation - Down Below
- Gothic Metal. ★★★½

★★February Albums★★

10. Deszcz - III - Crust Punk. ★★★

11. Justin Timberlake - Man of the Woods
- Contemporary R&B/Pop. ★½

12. Rich Brian - Amen
- Trap Rap/Pop Rap - ★★★½

13. Meitei - Kwaidan -
Tape Music/Spoken Word. ★★★½

14. Spark Master Tape - Seven Sekkonds of Silence -
Experimental Hip Hop/Trap Rap. ★★★½

15. Skyzoo - In Celebration of Us
- East Coast Hip Hop. ★★★½

16. JPEGMAFIA - Veteran
- Experimental Hip Hop/Glitch Hop. This is some mind bending shit. It's like a mix of trap, Drake and Death Grips. Weird mix but I loved it. ★★★★

17. Various Artists - Black Panther
- Film Soundtrack/West Coast Hip Hop. ★★★½

18. MGMT - Little Dark Age
- Synthpop/Neo Psychedelia. ★★½

19. Visigoth - Conqueror's Oath -
Power Metal. ★★½

20. Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy
- Indie Rock. Listening to this made me feel better about the rock is dead narrative...then I found out this is a remake of an album from 2011. Which is still of this decade, so that's something. Whatever. It's excellent. I'll try the 2011 version sometime, and the rest of their material. ★★★★

21. Black Milk - Fever
- Hip Hop. ★★★½

22. Carpenter Brut - Leather Teeth
- Synthwave/Electro House. ★★★½

23. Keiji Haino & Sumac - American Dollar Bill - Keep Looking Sideways, You're Too Hideous to Look at Face On
- Noise Rock/Free Improvisation. ★★★

★★March albums★★

24. Earthgang - Royalty - Southern Hip Hop. ★★★½

25. Anna von Hausswolff - Dead Magic - Neoclassical Darkwave. ★★★★

26. Evidence - Weather or Not
- Boom Bap/West Coast Hip Hop. ★★★

27. Against All Logic - 2012-2017
- Deep House. ★★★½

28. Slugdge - Esoteric Malacology
- Death Metal/Sludge Metal. ★★★½

29. Hampshire & Foat - The Honeybear
- -Chamber Folk/Ambient. ★★★

30. Roc Marciano - Rosebudd's Revenge
- East Coast Hip Hop. This could have been a lot better. I like the actual soundscapes this album has. But there's very little actual beat to it, or maybe the beat isn't strong enough for me. And the MC seems to be throwing a bunch of words at you, not really syncing up with what beat there is. Good rhymes though. ★★★

31. Jericho Jackson - Khrysis & Elzhi are Jericho Jackson
- Boom Bap/Conscious Hip Hop. ★★★

32. Logic - Bobby Taratino II
- Trap Rap/East Coast Hip Hop. This dude can rap. The beats sound good. Why does this suck? Maybe it's wack lines like I SMOKE WEED! Who cares? ★★

33. Young Fathers - Cocoa Sugar
- Neo Soul/Indietronica. ★★★

34. Rolo - Tomassi - Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It
- Post Hardcore/Mathcore. ★★★

35. Earthless - Black Heaven
- Psychedelic Rock. More generic than their other offerings, sadly. I've been wondering what they'd sound like with a singer, and we got it. Wasn't that great, though. They're still good at going off on a jam session. ★★★

36. Bishop Nehru - Elevators: Act I & II
- Jazz Rap/Abstract Hip Hop. ★★★

37. Vyva Melinkolya - Vyva Melinkolya - Shoegaze. ★★★

38. Park Jiha - Communion
- Korean Folk Music/Post Minimalism. ★★★

39. Suss - Ghost Box -
Post Rock/Country. ★★★

40. Drudkh - They Often See Dreams About the Spring
- Atmospheric Black Metal. ★★★½

41. Gost - Possessor
- Horror Synth/Black Metal. Half of this album is basically electronic black metal and I love it. ★★★★

42. Tal National - Tantabara
- Afro Funk. ★★½

43. Jack White - Boarding House Reach
- Experimental Rock. ★★★

Non 2018 releases: 130

★★January albums★★

1. Rosalía - Los Ángeles - Flamenco/Folk - 2017. Beautifully performed. I think the album would have benefitted from a little more conventional song structures, though. It was a bit formless, so it made it a little tough to latch onto. ★½

2. Fugazi - Repeater -
Post Hardcore - 1990. I'm not too experienced with these genres, so it'll take some getting used to for me. I liked it, didn't love it on first listen. Two Beats Off was pretty dope, though. ★★

3. Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West -
Indie Rock - 1997. I didn't like this. Really didn't like the singer and the guitar riffs didn't make up enough for it. Wasn't irredeemable, but I won't be going back to this. ★★

4. Frank Zappa - Hot Rats -
Jazz Rock/Jazz Fusion - 1969. I've been intimidated to get into Frank Zappa's catalogue because I never know where to start. So I just picked one and stuck with it. It was awesome. I thought there'd be more vocals for some reason, but that's okay. Great jams throughout the entire thing. ★★★★

5. Swans - Cop -
Industrial/No wave- 1984. I love Swans, but there a couple albums that I haven't yet gotten into. Probably the most brutal thing I've heard from them so far. ★★★½

6. SZA - CTRL -
Alternative R&B - 2017. She's got a really cool voice. I do wish the hooks were stronger, but this has me interested in seeing how she progresses. ★★★

7. Joanna Newsom - Divers -
Chamber Folk/Singer-Songwriter - 2015. Listening to this was like listening to the soundtrack of fairytales. Good stuff. ★★★★

8. Pixies - Doolittle -
Alt Rock/Indie Rock - 1989. I was super caught off guard by how energetic and raw they could be. Didn't expect second song in the dude to be screaming his face off. Luckily, I love that shit. It's not all that, though. There's a balance. ★★★★

9. Morbid Angel - Kingdoms Disdained -
Death Metal - 2017. I'm pretty sure I saw a person or two call this a return to form. Maybe? It's definitely better than Illud but it's still pretty generic. Other than a few spots, I can't even remember the riffs I heard. ★½

10. Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 88-92
- Ambient Techno/IDM - 1992. The first 5 songs bored me. But when song 6 hit, the rest of the album kept my interest. ★★★½

11. Brian Eno - Another Green World
- Art Rock - 1975. I like expiremental stuff, but sadly there weren't too many ideas that grabbed me on first listen. Maybe if I revisit. ★★½

12. Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness -
Alternative Rock - 1995. This could shoot up a whole star if the singer wasn't so annoying. He's got that nasally Dave Mustaine thing but manages to be worse for me. I really liked the music behind him, though. ★★★½

13. Migos - Culture - Trap - 2017. I knew I wasn't going to like this and I did it anyway. Mistake. ★

14. Justin Timberlake - Futuresex/Lovesounds - Pop - 2006. Not really sure why I never got around to this, considering I adore 20/20. But his new song inspired me to. It's pretty good. I still like 20/20 more though. ★★★★

15. Talk Talk - Laughing Stock -
Post Rock/Experimental Rock - 1991. I accidentally listened to this on shuffle, so I don't know how the album flows. But I enjoyed what I heard quite a bit. ★★★★

16. Shining - V - Halmstad -
Depressive Black Metal - 2007. The moments I liked from their new album inspired me to listen to another one. This is a lot more consistent. It's lacking the truly soul chilling moments that the new album has, but it's still a good listen. ★★★½

17. Depeche Mode - Violator - Synthpop - 1990. Enjoyed this the whole way through. I can see repeated listens improving the score. ★★★★

18. Cyhi da Prynce - No Dope on Sundays -
Southern Hip Hop - 2017. You got a mix of southern/trap bangers on here and more jazzy and traditional type beats here. I actually like the trap bangers more. The whole package was good, though. ★★★½

19. Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um - Post Bop - 1959. I've heard things off this before, like Pork Pie Hat. But for some reason jazz just isn't a genre I seek out albums. I don't know why it isn't, because jazz is fantastic. As is this release. ★★★★½

20. Revered Bizarre - In The Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend
- Doom Metal - 2002. I like the singer. The riffs are generic, though, aside from Sodoma Sunrise. Decent riffs, but you can get them better elsewhere. ★★★

21. Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo Volume 1 -
Alt Rock/Progressive Rock - 2005. Yeah I'm not putting the whole title lol. Anyway, I thought that I would like this despite Claudio's voice, because Welcome Home is a banger. Nope. The album is completely uninteresting beyond that song. ★½

22. Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny - Heavy Metal - 1976. Good album. Great pipes. ★★★½

23. Motorhead - Overkill - Heavy Metal - 1979. The passing of Fast Eddie inspired me to finally listen to a Motorhead album through and through. I usually listen to their choice cuts. I love the almost speed metal sound this has. I hope some bands, if just in the underground, continue this style of music. ★★★★

24. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
- East Coast Hip Hop - 1989. I started off not liking this because of the MCs. But as it went on, I was warming up to them. I really like the tracks behind them. There was one that was pretty much a rock song. Loved it. Too bad nu metal wasn't more like that track. ★★★★

25. Alvvays - Antisocialites
- Jangle Pop/Indie Pop - 2017. A good, sweet sounding album. ★★★½

26. Protomartyr - Relatives in Descent - Post-Punk - 2017. Not much to say other than this was great and I'll be revisiting this a lot. ★★★★

27. Solefald - In Hamornia Universali
- Progressive Metal - 2003. Tons of cool moments throughout the album. I do feel that some of the songs feel like they try to jump around a little too much, which is something you risk with progressive metal. If they can take their ideas, flesh them out and let them breathe, having their songs keep more of a theme within itself, then they'll have perfected their formula in my eyes (ears rather). ★★★½

28. Otis Spann - The Biggest Thing Since Colossus - Blues - 1969. ★★★★

29. Rome - Masse Mensch Material
- Neofolk/Martial Industrial - 2008. Solid overall. Some boring moments, some really good ones. Even during the more boring moments it still sounds good. ★★★

30. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Tender Prey - Post-Punk/Gothic Rock - 1988. The ending of the opening track should have been shortened a little, but otherwise this was pretty much perfect. The next couple entries might be Nick Cave because I don't want to listen to anything else right now. ★★★★½

31. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - The Good Son -
Singer/Songwriter/Gothic Rock - 1990. Enjoyable, but a little too piano ballady. The Witness Song, though, was amazing. ★★★½

32. Prurient - Rainbow Mirror - Drone/Dark Ambient - 2017. I was bruh.jpg the entire time listening to this. I felt like I was super impatient, waiting for class to end sitting uncomfortably in my seat because I was so fucking bored. I loved Frozen Niagara Falls but I have to question why this album was even made. It does absolutely nothing to justify its 3 hour and 20 minute length. ★

33. Iglooghost - Neō Wax Bloom - UK Bass/Wonky - 2017. Enjoyable, but it felt a little too hyperactive. It felt like the music was trying to show you all of its ideas at once because it was afraid it would forget about them. ★★★

34. Motorhead - Ace of Spades - Heavy Metal - 1980. Frontloaded (come on, it starts with the title track) but awesome. ★★★★

35. Gost - Behemoth -
Synthwave/Horror Synth - 2015. There's a good mix of dancy stuff and horror stuff. The changes can be a little jarring, but this type of music is pretty cool. ★★★½

36. Gost - Non Paradisi - Synthwave/Horror Synth - 2016. Pretty much the exact sentiments as Behemoth. I'm hyped for the new album but also hoping there'll be a slight change up. ★★★½

37. The Birthday Party - Prayers on Fire - Post-Punk/Noise Rock - 1981. Precursor to The Bad Seeds. Take that and make it more wild and freakier, and you'll have an idea. It's a pretty interesting album having come out when it did. Ultimately I do prefer the more refined Bad Seeds, but this is fun. ★★★½

38. Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime - Post-Punk/Punk Rock - 1984. Enjoyable and fun album, but it was too long. Shave it down to having more of the highlights. ★★★½

39. Asphyx - Last One on Earth - Death Metal - 1992. There's something about MvD's vocals. I can't pinpoint it, but I always like hearing him. Some of the verse riffing can get a little forgettable, but their riff changeup game is on point. Lots of cool entertaining tempo changes. Not really in a prog metal/rock way. Just, idk, changes. ★★★★

40. PJ Harvey - Let England Shake -
Singer-Songwriter/Art Rock - 2011. Didn't have many thoughts while this was playing. It was nice. ★★★

41. Tomahawk - Mit Gas - Experimental Rock - 2003. ★★★½

42. Moses Sumney - Aromanticism - Art Pop - 2017. I actually previewed a song a while ago because I got this from Vinyl Me Please. But I finally listened to it (no access to my physical music collection atm). Stunningly beautiful. I hope this guy gets more shine. ★★★★

43. U.S. Maple - Acre Thrills
- Experimental Rock - 2001. The music of this album never really gained any momentum. I felt like I was always waiting for a song to start. And the singer's style was like he was struggling to breathe, or was shivering cold. Not a fan. ★★

44. Insomnium - Winter's Gate
- Melodic Death Metal - 2016. Well performed and I can't see why a fan of the genre wouldn't like this. Unfortunately for me I don't really like the melodic death metal where there're epic leads at the forefront of everything. I saw Edge of Sanity mentions so I got excited, but I didn't get that from this. EoS has more melody built into their riffs instead of relying on leads to carry all the melody. ★★★

45. Sufjan Stevens - Michigan - Chamber Folk/Singer-Songwriter - 2003. Very similar to Illinois (or the other way since this came first). Not as good, but that isn't this albums fault. It's still really good, though. Makes me want more state themed albums from him. ★★★★

46. Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra -
Neoclassical New Age - 1972. ★★★½

47. Portal - Outre - Death Metal - 2007. I love the oppressive feeling, the dissonant riffs, their overall aesthetic, but the song writing could use some improving. ★★★

48. Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030 - Experimental Hip Hop - 2000. ★★★½

49. Open Mike Eagle - Brick Body Kids Still Daydream - Experimental Hip Hop - 2017. ★★★½

50. Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted - Indie Rock/Noise Pop - 1992. ★★★

51. Travis Scott - Rodeo - Trap Rap - 2015. I liked this a lot for what it is. Remove the vocal effects, though, and I'm listening to this regularly. ★★★½

52. Jay Z - The Black Album - East Coast Hip Hop - 2003. Good rapping, good beats. But for some reason I can't figure out why I'm not loving it. Same with all Jay. I guess you just can't love everything. This is good, though, don't get me wrong. ★★★

53. Le Mans - Saudade - Indie Pop/Indie Folk - 1996 ★★★

54. Uplift Spice - Omegarhythm - J-Pop/Punk Rock - Energetic jpoppy punk. Singing is a little too high pitched for me, though. ★★★

55. Lô Borges - A Via Láctea - Singer-Songwriter/Progressive Pop - 1979. ★★★

56. Big Star - Radio City - Power Pop/Pop Rock - 1974. ★★★½

57. Nick Drake - Pink Moon - Contemporary Folk/Singer-Songwriter - 1972. ★★★★

58. Linda Martini - Olhos de Mongol
- Noise Rock/Post Rock - 2006. ★★★½

59. Alice Coltrane featuring Pharaoh Sanders - Journey in Satchidananda - Sprititual Jazz - 1971. ★★★★½

60. Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
- Indie Rock/Noise Pop - 1997. ★★★½

61. Justin Timberlake - Justified - Pop/R&B - 2002. ★★★½

62. Nick Drake - Bryter Layter - Contemporary Folk - 1970 - ★★★½

63. Karl Denson's Tiny Universe - New Ammo - Jazz-Funk - 2014. Very fun album. It almost feels you're there watching the band play. ★★★★

64. Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz -
Art Pop/Chamber Pop - 2010. I appreciate experimenting with your sound, but it doesn't always result in a good thing. I don't feel it does here. The electronic element to the album clashes with his style for me. ★★★

65. Oranssi Pazuzu - Farmakologinen - Black Metal/Psychedelic Rock - 2017. ★★★½

66. Godflesh - Godflesh - Sludge Metal/Industrial Metal - 1988. ★★★½

67. Kate Bush - Hounds of Love - Art Pop/Progressive Pop - 1985. ★★★½

68. Nico - Desertshore - Avant Folk/Chamber Folk - 1970. ★★★½

69. Old - The Musical Dimensions of Sleastak - Experimental Rock/Industrial Metal - 1993. There were times where I felt like I was listening to a sci fi horror movie. ★★★★½

70. Secret Chiefs 3 - Book of Souls: Folio A -
Experimental Rock - 2013. ★★★½

71. Traditionalists - Le mani destre recise degli ultimi uomini - Film Score - 2009. ★★★

★★February Albums★★

72. Old - Lo Flux Tube - Industrial Metal/Experimental Rock - 1991. ★★★½

73. Secret Chiefs 3 - Book of Horizons -
Experimental Rock - 2004. ★★★½

74. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds -
Baroque Pop - 1966. Yep, first time I've listened to this. I've tried on numerous occasions but would quit after the 2nd or 3rd song because it's not as good as Wouldn't It Be Nice. But I did the whole thing this time. WIBN is still the best song, but it's a good album. ★★★½

75. Arcade Fire - Funeral -
Indie Rock/Chamber Pop - 2004. ★★★

76. Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans -
Indie Folk/Chamber Folk - 2004. ★★★½

77. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
- Indie Folk/Chamber Folk - 2008. ★★★½

78. Eyehategod - Take As Needed for Pain
- Sludge Metal - 1993. ★★★

79. Aosoth - V: The Inside Scriptures
- Black Metal - 2017. ★★★½

80. The Strokes - Is This It -
Indie Rock/Garage Rock Revival - 2001. What I love about this challenge is that I'm listening to something all the way even if I'm not grabbed instantly. I tried listening to this before and wasn't grabbed so I turned it off after 2 songs. Completely different story this time. ★★★★

81. Bernard Herrmann - Psycho
- Film Score/Modern Classical -1975. ★★★★

82. Joy Division - Closer
- Post Punk - 1980. ★★★½

83. Bauhaus - In the Flat Field
- Gothic Rock/Post Punk - 1980. ★★★½

84. Killing Joke - Killing Joke
- Post Punk/Gothic Rock - 1980. ★★★

85. The Cure - Seventeen Seconds
- Post Punk/Gothic Rock - 1980. ★★★

86. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree
- Singer Songwriter - 2016. ★★★

87. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - The Firstborn is Dead
- Post Punk/Punk Blues - 1985. ★★★½

88. Sigur Rós - ( ) -
Post Rock/Ambient - 2002. Their music is very pretty, it's just slow. And at 70 minutes and change, it can get a bit boring. ★★★

89. Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred of Mankind
- Death Metal/Black Metal/Sludge Metal - 2009. ★★★½

90. JPEGMAFIA - Black Ben Carson
- Industrial Hip Hop - 2016. He's was kind of obnoxious on this album, pretty much being like fuck everybody. But the music is still on point. Another release or two and he'll be a favorite of mine. ★★★★

91. JPEGMAFIA - The 2nd Amendment -
Experimental Hip Hop - 2016. ★★★½

92. David Bowie - Station to Station
- Art Rock - 1976. Way groovier than I expected. Bluesy riffs in there, some upbeat blues piano, a touch of drama. Excellent, balanced album. ★★★★½

93. Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
- Pop Rock - 1978. ★★★½

94. David Bowie - "Heroes" -
Art Rock - 1977. ★★★★

95. Miles Davis - Nefertiti
- Post Bop/Modal Jazz - 1968. ★★★★

96. Carcass - Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious -
Death Metal - 1991. ★★★

97. Fishmans - Long Season
- Dream Pop/Neo Psychedelia - 1996. ★★★★

98. Paysage d'Hiver - Paysage d'Hiver
- Atmospheric Black Metal - 1999. This could be a point higher if some of the fat was trimmed and the vocals were recorded a little better. ★★★½

99. Akercocke - Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone -
Death Meta/Progressive Metal - 2005. ★★★½

100. Janelle Monáe - The Electric Lady
- Contemporary R&B/Funk - 2013. ★★★½

101. Janelle Monáe - Metropolis, Suite I: The Chase
- Art Pop/Contemporary R&B - 2007. ★★★½

102. Deathspell Omega - Diabolus Absconditus
- Black Metal/Progressive Metal - 2011. ★★★

103. The 13th Floor Elevators - Easter Everywhere
- Psychedelic Rock - 1967. The music was fine but it was ruined by this sound effect that played throughout their songs. Really started to grate on me. ★★

104. Ibeyi - Ash
- Art Pop/Alternative R&B - 2017. ★★★

105. The Fall -This Nation's Saving Grace
- Post Punk - 1985. ★★★

106. Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial
- Indie Rock - 2016. ★★★½

107. Julia Holter - Have You in My Wilderness
- Art Pop/Chamber Pop - 2015. ★★★

108. Blues Control - Local Flavor
- Neo Psychedelia/Drone - 2009. ★★★½

★★March Albums★★

109. Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked - Death Metal - 2005. ★★★

110. Swans - Love of Life - Post Punk/Gothic Rock - 1992. Not sure why this doesn't get more love. Maybe because it's not quite as good as White Light. ★★★★

111. Current 93 - Lucifer Over London
- Neofolk/Psychedelic Rock/Spoken Word - 1994. ★★★★

112. Current 93 - Horsey
- Neofolk/Psychedeic Rock - 1997. ★★★½

113. Current 93 - Baalstorm, Sing Omega
- Avant Folk/Spoken Word - 2010. This could have been in the 4.5-5 range if there were more vocal stylings than the spoken word style he does. I loved the instrumentation. I like his voice, and how fairytale it can be. Like I'm being read a book. But I'd like more beat to the music. ★★★★

114. Current 93 - Tamlin -
Neofolk - 1994. ★★★½

115. Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs
- Blues Rock/Hard Rock - 1974. ★★★

116. Tom Waits - Alice
- Singer-Songrwriter/Dark Cabaret - 2002. ★★★★

117. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - No More Shall We Part -
Singer Songwriter/Piano Rock - 2001. Nick oversang on a lot of tracks, bringing this down a little. I like his voice, but songs like "God Is In the House" for example, the singing just doesn't quite work for me. That's my only problem, though. ★★★½

118. My Bloody Valentine - Tremolo - Shoegaze/Dream Pop - 1991. ★★★

119. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
- Heavy Metal - 1983. ★★★½

120. Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar!
- Country/Rockabilly - 1957. ★★★½

121. Swans - Holy Money
- Industrial Rock/Noise Rock - 1986. I've been really slow to listen to this because nobody talks about it and places I visit like RYM have it scored pretty low. WHY?!?!. I feel like they wrote one of their most actually enjoyable albums while retaining that creepy and abrasive style they used to have. I mean Cop is dope, but this I'll actually want to listen to regularly. ★★★★½

122. With Passion - In the Midst of Bloodied Soil
- Technical Death Metal/Metalcore - 2005. ★★½

123. Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky
- Post Rock/Experimental Rock - 2010. This gets overlooked compared to the other post-reunion albums, but I feel like it's as good as any of them (except TBK). ★★★★

124. Diamanda Galás - Defixiones, Will and Testament
- Piano Blues/Spoken Word - 2003. Incredible singer. From what I've read she's reading/singing journal entries by poets and war victims. Incredibly dark and unsettling. Hairs standing on your back and neck type of unsettling. My only criticism is, while the singer is the star, at times it features a little bit too much of her. ★★★★

125. Injury Reserve - Drive It Like It's Stolen
- Experimental Hip Hop - 2017. ★★★½

126. Leviathan - Tentacles of Whorror
- Depressive Black Metal - 2004. This dude is really good at creating such a bleak and hopeless atmosphere. Where my biggest problem comes is the songwriting sometimes sounds samey and I have a hard time placing where I'm at. He does a better job of this in later albums like Scar Sighted, but this is still cool. ★★★½

127. Radiohead - Amnesiac
- Experimental Rock/Electronic - 2001. Not a Radiohead guy so my words aren't worth much, but this might be my favorite Radiohead album. I'm usually pretty bored aside from a song or two, but there were several cool and weird moments on this that had me very pleased. ★★★★

128. Swans - Body to Body Job to Job
- Industrial/Noise Rock - 1991. ★★★★

129. Swans - Greed
- Noise Rock/No Wave - 1986. ★★★½

130. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black - Soul/Rhythm and Blues - 2006. ★★★½

i'm aiming for an album a day so this'll be a nice accountability supplement. i'll try to add genres / some form of commentary too. also i can't recommend rateyourmusic as a resource enough - even if you don't engage with it beyond just the search function.

my anemic rym

eutrophied - 51/50

rating scale 1/2★ to ★★★★★

4★-5★ are great albums with the addition of personal importance, highly subjective.
2★-3★ are where most my ratings fall, ranging from tolerable and salvageable to those in heavy rotation.
<★-1★ are albums i actively did not enjoy, nor do i believe are worth revisiting, ranging from the annoying to the offensive.

also i count compilations as records.

non-2018 w/ **attempted** themed weeks!
~WEEK 1 - Whatever I Feel Like, You Know~
1. Uranium Club - All of Them Naturals / 2016 / Garage Punk / ★★ / the unfunny spoken-word intro is egregious given the length of the album (only 23 minutes), but there are some decent, if not reductive, tracks on this thing.
2. Snapped Ankles - Come Play the Trees / 2017 / Dance-Punk / / the opener goes for this pretty interesting kind of tribal minimalism that the rest of the album rejects in favor of some ugly pop synth wobbling. gets an extra half a star because i hear potential.
3. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today / 2010 / Psychedelic Pop / ★★★ / ariel pink's brand of pastiche crosses the line of novelty easily and frequently (not to say it's unexpected, r. stevie moore was doing it the first go round). this release shows the restraint i've been craving going through his solo discography.
4. Mavis Staples - Only for the Lonely / 1970 / Southern Soul / ★★1/2 / some great singles are marred by arrangement choices that detract from it as an album. staples sounds fantastic on this though.
5. Phill Niblock - Music by Phil Niblock / 1993 / Drone / ★★1/2 / was expecting a more challenging listen. slid down too easy to be particularly memorable.
6. DJ Spooky - Songs of a Dead Dreamer / 1996 / Instrumental Hip-Hop / ★★★ / at times plodding, but diverse influences lead to a spacey and immersive atmosphere.
7. Carl Stone - Mom's / 1992 / Tape Music / ★★ / that vocal sample on is Shing Kee grating and interrupts some near transcendent momentum up to that point. still likely an essential listen for the genre.
8. Shopping - Consumer Complaints / 2013 / Dance-y Post-Punk that I don't want to call Dance-Punk / ★★ / unnecessary elongation of well worn concepts. my preference for the more constrained sophomore release has me hopeful for what's coming later this month.
9. John Maus - Screen Memories / 2017 / Hypnagogic Pop / ★★1/2 / indistinct, but this was fine.
10. Robert Johnson - King of the Delta Blues Singers / 1961 / Delta Blues / ★★★1/2 / listened to this walking around my neighborhood, eating a navel orange, thinking about my academic woes. it spoke to me.
11. KaS Product - By Pass / 1983 / Coldwave / ★★1/2 / vocalist is trained as a jazz singer i guess and this is given as some differentiating factor but like, a large portion of the experimental diy post-punk music that was released in the early 80s was influenced by jazz in some way (avant-garde/free jazz pretty overtly in a lot of cases....... i mean the pop group, theoretical girls, ludus, james chance, danielle dax, lemon kittens, we go on and on and on and on). so in short i'm saying this didn't sound particularly unique. this coming out in '83 doesn't help me thinking "derivative!!!!!!!" but i'm simultaneously drawn to and overexposed to this kind of music so i can't be that derisive. album art is album art of the week.

~WEEK 2 - Singer/Songwriter or Heavy Metal~
12. Daniel Johnston - 1990 / 1990 / Singer-Songwriter / ★★★ / sweet, painful album. twee tempered by heartbreak.
13. Jonathan Richman - I, Jonathan / 1992 / Singer-Songwriter / ★★ wavering maybe ★1/2 / tongue-in-cheek tunes like these are pretty dependent on the charisma (or i guess i should say the believability of the persona) of the vocalist. i don't find jonathan to be goofy and endearing, i find him ingratiating. some cute lyrics are ruined by repetition.
14. The Necessaries - Event Horizon / 1982 / Jangle Pop / ★★1/2 / arthur russell in a band that got featured on some power pop compilation! crazy! has a strong opening few tracks, otherwise middling.
15. Cluster & Eno - Cluster & Eno / 1977 / Ambient / ★★1/2 / a hard active listen. a-side was decidedly more engaging.
16. Patti Smith - Horses / 1975 / Proto-Punk | Singer-Songwriter / ★★ / just like jonathan's not selling me on goofy, patti's not selling me on cool. despite this "gloria" is a very, very good track. after a couple more relistens i'm hearing and believing the proto-punk in this. bumpin' up to a three.
17. Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath / 1984 / Heavy Metal / ★1/2 / highly campy, unfortunately not high camp.
18. The Cure - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me / 1987 / Post-Punk / ★★ / some arguably classic tracks on here but as far as album structure and cohesion go this thing is a mess. has me wistful for seventeen seconds.
19. Injury Reserve - Floss / 2016 / ★★ / Saw them for the second time last night and wanted to give this a listen. I think given their Internet clout levels that'll likely be the last free show of their's I'll be attending. There are really smart / relevant lines on here, especially from Ritchie, but ultimately none of these tracks stick with me. Regardless, they're a good group and deserve the recognition. It's been cool watching them come up through the local scene.
20. Black Sabbath - Self-Titled / 1970 / Heavy Metal / ★★1/2 / good atmosphere, good guitar work. unfortunately, flies a little too close to the blues rock sun and ends up kind of sounding like zeppelin.
21. Joni Mitchell - Blue / 1971 / Singer-Songwriter / ★★1/2 / heard pieces of this but never gone all the way through. like it better in chunks.
22. John Maus - Love is Real / 2007 / Synthpop / ★★/ some really fun, stupid moments on this thing. vintage oughties reviews comparing this to person pitch have me questioning my memory of that album. maus' stand gets album art of the week!
23. John Maus - Songs / 2006 / Synthpop / ★★1/2 / out of the three """hypnagogic boys""" (pink, ferraro, and maus) i gotta say maus is the most consistent.
24. Black Sabbath - Master of Reality / 1971 / Heavy Metal / ★★★ / a classic i can agree on. rare!

~WEEK 3 - Missed Releases From 1979*~
25. GERMS - (GI) / Hardcore Punk / ★★1/2 / topically banal and dudes can't play, but that's also just hardcore a lot of the time. salvaged by momentum.
26. Magazine - Secondhand Daylight / Proggy Post-Punk / ★★★ / disregards any classically post-punkian concerns for propulsion and takes its time, arriving nicely at the cusp of danceability and development.
27. Terry Allen - Lubbock on (Everything) / Country / ★1/2 / way too bloated. interesting instrumentals in some places, but i don't think i can bring myself to revisit this thing as a whole. album art is 39 years ahead of its time.
28. Bunny Lee - King of Dub / Dub / ★★★ maybe ★★★1/2 / i love dub and this delivers.
29. Sun Ra - God is More Than Love Can Ever Be / Avant-Garde Jazz / ★★★ / overshadowed by sleeping beauty, this record feels smaller and softer and more personal.
30. Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure / Progressive Electronic / ★★★ / a love how bold the guitar is on this, really lends it a sense of bombast. really thought td was out for me since i was lukewarm on phaedra and couldn't get through stratosfear on the first listen, but i'm into this. that 79' bias!

*1979 is unequivocally my favorite year in music.

~WEEK 4 - Whatever I Feel Like, You Know: The Remix~

Extensive Relisten That Doesn't Count. Panda Bear - Person Pitch / 2007 / Psych Pop / ★★1/2 / not quite a wall of sound. more like a room divider. or a styrofoam cup with a little piece of mango in it.*
31. John Maus - We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves / 2011 / Synthpop / ★★1/2 / undisputedly the most accessible release, but doesn't deliver the hooks it should.
32. John Maus - A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material / 2012 / Synthpop / ★★★1/2 / in my quest to finish out his discography for the sake of completion, i found the best pop record i've heard in years. the sound of some of this stuff is near prophetic.
33. Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms / 1970 / Psych Folk / ★★★ / at-mos-phere.
34. Alexander Von Schlippenbach Trio - Pakistani Pomade / 1973 / European Free Jazz / ★★★ / confounding and disastrous.
35. Harold Budd - Lovely Thunder / 1986 / Ambient / ★★1/2 / still better than his eno collabs.
36. The Dream Syndicate - The Days of Roses and Wine / 1982 / Paisley Underground / ★★ / a matter of differing aesthetics.
37. Muslimgauze - Return of Black September / 1996 / Tribal Ambient / ★★★ / very good music to do geoprocessing to while a post-doc student keeps looking over his shoulder sending you vibes he wants you to leave the shared office space.
38. Graham Lambkin / Jason Lescallet - The Breadwinner / 2008 / Musique Concrete / ★★★ / i like the anticlimax of this. musique concrete / ea should be subversive.
39. Cindy Lee - Malenkost / 2015 / Lo-Fi Indie / ★★1/2 / in the midst of preoccupations gearing up for their 3rd album with that messy single i thought i'd give cindy lee another shot. rougher around the edges than their other 2015 release, which makes it passively enjoyable rather than passively tolerated. always remember to mention cindy lee as the cooler women offshoot for maximum leverage in conversations about 2010s rock derivative music.
40. Muslimgauze - Azzazin / 1996 / Glitch / ★★1/2 / not as good as black september but picking your second muslimgauze record is hard. album art of the week.
41. Wir - The First Letter / 1991 / Alternative Dance / ★★ / so and slow is grows is a groovy little single, otherwise this feels desperate.
42. Yximalloo - Unpop / 2008 / Experimental / ★★1/2 / rating experimental music is pointless but i keep doing it.

*I was going to make this Animal Collective+/Ween week but that can wait.

~WEEK 5 - Albums I Have Feared and Dreaded~
43. The Police - Regatta De Blanc / 1979 / New Wave, Pop Reggae / ★★ / any other day is some palpable david byrne songwriting jealousy.
44. Scott Walker - Tilt / 1995 / Experimental / ★★★1/2 / demands an active listen.
45. Avey Tare and Panda Bear - Spirit They're Gone Spirit They've Vanished / Neo-Psych / ★★1/2 / hits and misses.
46. Harry Pussy - You'll Never Play This Town Again / 2008 / Noise Rock / ★★★ / i think some cuts could've been made toward the end, but this is how to do abrasive music with a sense of levity.
47. Pink Floyd - Meddle / 1971 / Prog / ★★1/2 / this was because i still can't will myself to listen to the wall or dark side all the way through.
48. Pedestrian Deposit - Fatale / 2006 / Noise / ★★★ / malfunctioning melancholy.

~WEEK 6 - Stressed Out, I Seek Music With A Comfy Reputation (in my limited conception, this means shugazi)~
49. Breathless - Between Happiness and Heartache / 1991 / Dream Pop / ★★1/2 / tunes for the background of old, embarrassing high school daydreams. (pretty comfy)
50. Ride - Nowhere / 1990 / Shoegaze / ★★1/2 / i want it fuzzier, noisier. those vocals need to be drenched. (pretty comfy)
51. Difference Engine - Breadmaker / 1994 / Shoegaze / ★★1/2
52. Ultra Vivid Scene - Joy 1967-1990 / 1990 / Indie Rock / ★★
53. Robert Pollard - Waved Out / 1998 / Indie Rock / ★★1/2 / that bland alt rock guitar kills it for me.

~WEEKS 7, 8, and 9 - RYM Recommendations~
54. XTC - English Settlement / 1982 / Pop Rock / ★★★ / silly and cool.
55. Cleaners from Venus - Midnight Cleaners / 1982 / Jangle Pop / ★★★ / love a repetitive riff.
56. Cleaners from Venus - Blow Away Your Troubles / 1981 / Jangle Pop / ★★★1/2 / fat bass - playin' this in the car for a mixed crowd. "helpless" is a fine little love song.
57. The Wake - Harmony / 1982 / Post-Punk / ★★★ / insufficient proof they're a top 3 factory records band, still enjoyable.
58. Martin Newell - Songs for a .... Fallow Land / 1985 / Indie Rock / ★★★
59. R. Stevie Moore - Returns / 1976 / Psych Pop / ★★1/2 / patience required.
60. Mekons - Fear and Whiskey / 1985 / Cow Punk / ★★1/2
61. Minimal Man -The Shroud Of / 1981 / Minimal Wave / ★★1/2 / bootleg t-shirt merch of this album cover on ebay boasts 6 sales which seems about right to me.
62. Talking Heads - Little Creatures / 1985 / "Art" Pop / ★★ / "and she was" is one of my least favorite singles of all time. this album is merely my least favorite talking heads record. if i didn't put this in favorite album art of the month i should've.
63. Mr. Bungle - California / 1999 / Experimental Rock / ★★★ / surpasses novelty.
64. Controlled Bleeding - Knees and Bones / 1985 / Power Electronics / ★★1/2 / one of my favorite album covers defines an otherwise okay album.
65. Robert Fripp & The League of Gentleman - The League of Gentleman / 1981 / Art Rock / ★★1/2 / i listen to so much stuff from this era, from this scene that i'd honestly be cool with never hearing another lofi audio snippet interspersing a track ever again.
66. Sally Shapiro - Disco Romance / 2006 / Italo-Disco / ★★★
67. Horace Andy - Dance Hall Style / 1982 / Roots Reggae / ★★
69. Videosex - Videosex '84 / 1984 / Hi-NRG / ★★ / there's a nerdiness to this that makes the serendipitous 69 seem undeserved.
70. Donna Summer - Bad Girls / 1979 / Disco / ★★1/2 / take out the ballad lull on the back half and this would be an all-time great.
71. Slyvester - Stars / 1979 / Disco / ★★1/2
72. Bronski Beat - Age of Consent / 1984 / Synthpop / ★★ / vocals are of note.
73. Prince Far I & The Arabs - Dub to Africa / 1979 / Dub / ★★1/2
74. Wayne Jarett - Showcase Vol. 1 / 1981 / Dub / ★★★ / dub bass is my musical bias.
75. Swirlies - Blonde Tongue Audio Bation / 1993 / Noise Pop / ★★
76. Ka - Honor Killed the Samurai / 2016 / East Coast Hip-Hop / ★★1/2 / appreciated the slower pacing of this.
77. Miles Davis - In a Silent Way / 1969 / Jazz Fusion / ★★★ / undisputed.

~WEEK 10....+ Bootleg T-Shirt Bands and Listening from Rip It Up and Start Again: Post-Punk 1978-1984 by Simon Reynolds~
78. PiL - This is What You Want...This is What You Get / 1984 / Post-Punk / ★★
79. PiL - Album / 1986 / Alt Rock / / feels absolutely antithetical to the band's mission statement. this one hurt.
80. Vic Godard & Subway Sect - 1978 Now / 2007 / Punk / ★★1/2
81. Cleaners from Venus - Living With Victoria Grey / 1986 / Jangle Pop / ★★1/2
82. JFA - Valley of the Yakes / 1983 / Hardcore Punk / ★★★ / the surf rock elements in here are unexpected and give this thing a real sense of individuality.
83. Dead Moon - In the Graveyard / 1988 / Garage Rock / ★★
84. Teenage Jesus and the Jerks - Self-titled / 1979 / No Wave / ★★★
85. Lydia Lunch - 13.13 / 1982 / Post-Punk / ★★★ / she's got me.

2018
1. Ceylon - Self-Titled / Neo-Psych / ★★ / pretty disposable "desert" aesthetics mixed with a few creative vocal moments.
2. Profligate - Somewhere Else / Coldwave / / gross production. pretentious delivery. repellant music.
3. Pendant - Make Me Know You Sweet / Ambient / ★★★ / beautifully droning opener and closer bookend solid, unfettered ambient.
4. Shopping - The Official Body / Dance Surf Rock / ★1/2 / yeah, i made an incorrect prediction. thread-bare composition and some laughable production choices (most egregiously that loop on discover).
5. John Surman - Invisible Threads / ECM Style Jazz / ★★1/2 / totally, perfectly fine. dips toward the end.
6. Half Japanese - Why Not? / Indie Rock / ★★ / like little pieces of cardboard in my ears.
7. JPEGMAFIA - Veteran / Glitch Hop / / dude games which is cool, but the verses fall on the wrong side of the juvenile / amusing divide most of the time, which is the risk when you rely on references. "i hit your momma with conker's bad fur day." okay. i guess i can't not mention "My Thoughts on Neogaf Dying." is this the first and only explicit musical reference to it? will there be more? discuss below.
8. No Age - Snares Like a Haircut / Indie Rock / ★★ / i've heard variations most of these tracks so many times before it that listening to an album like this really just becomes an exercise in endurance. the b-side tries for redemption, but the noisier (better) tracks are too isolated.
9. Nils Frahm - All Melody / Minimalism / ★★★ / yeah i honestly don't know if i like this but i gave it a three star anyway because it feels well-made. sometimes it's a *devo voice* gut feeling.
10. Portal - Ion / Technical Death Metal / ★★1/2 / this was decent but i'll probably never listen to it again.
11. The Soft Moon - Criminal / EBM / ★1/2 / incredibly embarrassing lyricism, vocals, and instrumentation.
12. Shame - Songs of Praise / Indie Rock / ★★ / songwriting needs some serious work. again, feels juvenile.
13. MGMT - LIl' Dark Age / Synthpop / ★★ / there's a think piece to be written on creatively bankrupt indie artists turning to synthpop in desperate times.
14. Black Merlin - Archives / Industrial Techno / ★★1/2
15. La Raaji - Vision Songs - Vol. 1 / Ambient Pop / ★1/2 / probably a wrong first start.
16. Ought - Room Inside a World / Room Inside the World / ★1/2 / doomed from the choir on desire.
17. Wind Atlas - An Edible Body / Ethereal Wave / ★★1/2 / a decent pastiche.
18. Anna Von Hausswolff - Dead Magic / Neoclassical Darkwave / ★★★ / yeah, this is AOTY material.

I do listen to a lot of music but I tend to stick with an album for a while, so I don't actually listen to that many releases.
Hopefully this time I'll remember to update because I always forget with these things:

Non-2018
1. Daft Punk - Discovery / Yes I know I should have probably listened to this ages ago. I like it, but I can feel its influence on countless early 2000s music that I hated so that dampens my enjoyment a bit.
2. Swans - The Seer / It's no To Be Kind or Soundtracks For The Blind but it's really good.
3. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest / Not necessarely my style of music, but I enjoy it well enough.
4. Jonny Greenwood - Phantom Treads Score
5. Belle and Sebastian - Push Barman to Open Old Wounds
6. Air - Moon Safari
7. The Voidz - Tyranny
8. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City
9. Anderson .Paak - Malibu
10. Lift To Experience - The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads / Maybe the worst cover ever, but the music is pretty dope
11. The Internet - Ego Death
12. Slowdive - Slowdive
13. Fever Ray - Plunge
14. Nils Frahm - All Melody
15. Rhye - Blood
16. Vagabon - Infinite Worlds
17. Jlin - Black Origami
18. Sylvan Esso - What Now
19. Big Black - Songs About Fucking

2018
1. Shame - Songs of Praise / This goes hard, I've heard a lot of parallels to Brutalism by Idles but I don't think it's as good
2. Anna Von Hausswolf - Dead Magic / Amazing stuff, I can't so a lot of things beating it this year. Similar to Swans
