First, milestones: I hit 50 releases from 2019 in October, so that's the stretch goal accomplished. I wasn't really planning to listen to so many albums in October, but here we are.

Angel Olsen: I think I like it, but it took some adjustment. I figured it wouldn't be as poppy as My Woman, but I thought I was ready for it based on my response to Burn Your Fire for No Witness earlier this year. I'm very curious to hear what the second, stripped-down version will sound like when she releases it (presumably) next year.

A bunch of stuff in here is record pickups from my vacation in Portland. Unfortunately, nothing really stands out. Both the Laika and Lois albums kind of pale in comparison to other albums of theirs. The Bat for Lashes and Flying Lotus albums seem good but haven't really sunk in yet.

Favourites of the month: vivid by kiki vivi lily, which is what happens when you try to mix shibuya-kei with laid-back hip-hop; and What a Boost by Rozi Plain, which is what happens when you take the more motorik tendencies of early Stereolab, apply it to gentle folk instrumentation, and overlay the whole thing with lullaby vocals not too far afield from Trish Keenan of Broadcast. It's low-key but very lovely.

Next month? Who knows, honestly. I think we're pretty much done for big releases on my radar, so at this point it's the calm before the storm of dissecting year-end lists to find stuff I missed through the year. (Incidentally, I'll be in whatever year-end albums thread pops up on Era, and I hope to see you all there too!)

In October we listened to 390 releases as a collective, bringing the grand total to 4287.

Nobody has reached 50 in quite awhile though we have a few people who are close/getting there. Some people seem to be hitting some milestones of their own count wise, regardless. I'm personally aiming to hit 200 total for the year end, which will be pushing it.

Bit of a lull this month, but a lot of it is stuff that's completely new to me. Besides P5 and Rainbow Chan I didn't know any of the other artists on the list. I liked pretty much all of it, though the Jeanines album sort of fades into the background really easily. Anna Meredith I think I'm still taking time to warm up to, as it's a bit clinical, but it's intriguing semi-classical avant-garde pop stuff nonetheless (and works a lot better for me than, say, the new Julia Holter album from the beginning of the year). Jubilee is just solid dance music, full stop. Stella Donnelly is a giant middle finger served with a smile, and though there are obvious antecedents (Courtney Barrett is the one I think gets mentioned most) it's hard to overstate how much fun the album is despite dealing with a bunch of serious topics.

But most of my month belongs to Pizzicato Five, really. I'm a fan of the band, but have never really been able to get into a specific album of theirs; more than any other band I know, their discography is a constellation of EPs, compilations and random singles that only vaguely coalesce around their studio albums. It's not uncommon to declare a favourite P5 song, only to clarify that actually you meant the original album version, not the single mix that got released separately or the revised version from a few years later. A new compilation spanning the entirety of the band's catalog during the Maki Nomiya years makes the task of getting into Pizzicato Five a whole lot easier; pretty much every song on the two-CD compilation is gold, and it picks the crowd-pleasing versions of most songs ("Aeroplane" on Overdose is fine but "Aeroplane 96" off Sister Freedom Tapes is so clearly the right choice, as is the single version of "Such a Beautiful Girl Like You"). If you've ever been interested in Pizzicato Five or shibuya-kei, but found the band's discography intimidating, this is the compilation for you.

I was going to write off December but it turns out a bunch of Japanese bands I like are releasing albums in the next few weeks, so I guess we're not done yet! See y'all at the end of the year (and hopefully in whatever Albums of the Year thread pops up!).

Most of the stuff I listened to this month was basically clean-up. The Answer to Remember album is a fun jazzy album, which I don't have enough of in my life. The CRCK/LCKS albums are growing on me, but don't have the same immediate punch as earlier releases. And I'm a bit disappointed by the Caroline Polachek, given that a) I really liked Chairlift back in the days of Bruises, and b) there's an Era thread about how it's such an amazing album. All in all, a quiet way to end the year, and strangely lacking in end-of-year-list discoveries like I used to have all the time. For whatever reason I just wasn't into it this year, despite reading the Pitchfork and Bandcamp lists.

That's all she wrote! Thanks to fatyoshi for running the thread. Dunno if there'll be one in 2020 but it was fun keeping track of what I listened to for once. I encourage all of you to check out the album of the year voting thread, as it's somehow getting even less attention than 2018's thread and if anyone's going to be interested in contributing, I figure it'd be all you fine folk.

I offered awhile back for someone to take over the challenge but nobody ever expressed interest. If that's still the case I can probably run it again in 2020 but I'm looking to do something different in hopes of promoting more activity and discussion.

The first thing I was thinking about was maybe making a challenge discord for people to share what they're listening to, give/receive recommendations, and just overall discuss music. I figure this might help keep activity going as it's easy to kinda forget about things over time (I've been guilty of falling behind on updating the thread and my own master post, for example).

The second thing I was looking into was doing a group google sheet where people can update their own count/stats as they go. This wouldn't be compulsory and it would still be fine to post updates in here but it would be smoother for the purposes of updating the counts to have something of the sort. It might be something I can just make on my end also.

Does any of this sound interesting to y'all?

I offered awhile back for someone to take over the challenge but nobody ever expressed interest. If that's still the case I can probably run it again in 2020 but I'm looking to do something different in hopes of promoting more activity and discussion.

The first thing I was thinking about was maybe making a challenge discord for people to share what they're listening to, give/receive recommendations, and just overall discuss music. I figure this might help keep activity going as it's easy to kinda forget about things over time (I've been guilty of falling behind on updating the thread and my own master post, for example).

The second thing I was looking into was doing a group google sheet where people can update their own count/stats as they go. This wouldn't be compulsory and it would still be fine to post updates in here but it would be smoother for the purposes of updating the counts to have something of the sort. It might be something I can just make on my end also.

Does any of this sound interesting to y'all?

Any/all of that sounds cool. Also, I didn't mean my comment to be a backhanded thing about "oh it's a shame there's no thread for 2020," I'm sorry! To be honest I'm also not sure if I was going to take part even if a new thread showed up, just because I too was hoping for more discussion and that didn't really seem to be a big thing in the thread. Definitely do whatever you think you can take on in terms of workload and don't feel like you have to put yourself out there for us! Regardless I appreciate the work you put into the thread for 2019.

(re: Discord, I know there was an Era Challenges Discord for the games/movies/books threads, but for whatever reason there was never a separate channel for music; maybe that would be a good fit?)

What a great year it has been for music discovery, I've been kind of out of the loop these past years on current bands/artists and I feel like in just a couple of months I was able to get a good up to date refresh on the whole indie scene, while also going through an impossible backlog of older classics and also opening up new horizons by discovering many great artists from all around the world, old and new (shout out to Brazil). The crazy thing is the more you dig, the more you find, it's just an endless supply of music. I could do a crazy run like this every year (which I won't) and still be barely scratching the surface. Many great suggestions from everybody here, see you in the next one!

I really enjoyed this challenge thread, it was a fun way of motivating myself to look for new music that I wouldn't have known about otherwise.

I´ll admit that I got lazy about updating these last months, with all that is happening in Chile and trying to end last semester of college with good grades. I will also try to participate more in discussions, seeing that I´m a bit insecure in my english.
