This week I managed to catch up on what I missed, while I wait patiently for the new Deerhunter, James Blake and Toro Y Moi albums...

1. The Lillingtons - Stella Sapiante (2017) -
I've always liked the Lillingtons and Teenage Bottlerocket so I don't know how I missed this, but it's good as expected, though not as hooky as their past work. Spy-themed pop-punk.

2. Anderson.Paak - Oxnard (2018) - I've never listened to any of his records previously, aside from singles so this was a surprise. There's a lot of depth here, blending soul and hip-hop quite well. I'll have to dig through and listen to his previous releases because I really liked this.

3. The 1975 - A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships (2018) - I'm not that familiar with the 1975, and this wasn't really my thing, but I can see they're trying something different to either further their audience or further themselves musically. There were a few songs I liked, especially the ballad towards the end, but I'm not quite on the wagon that compares this to OK Computer. It's more like how Arctic Monkeys surprised their fans with Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, something no one expected.

4. Noname - Room 25 (2018) - another artist I'm late to the party on, and she is a killer MC. This was a great complement to Oxnard, with her jazzy, spoken-word delivery on neo-soul beats. I'll have to check out her mixtape from a few years back.

5. Ella Mai - s/t (2018) - this was disappointing, the singles really held up the album as I found a lot of the record to be too long with too much filler. She's going for a vibe and I get that, but for the strength of "Boo'd Up" and "Trip" I was bummed to not really find any other song on this album on that level. I think she has a lot of potential though, and her live act is great.

Week 2:

61pMICJBtvL._SS500.jpg

6. King Princess - Make My Bed | 2018 | ★★★★ | Recommended track: 1950

Glad to see 1950 wasn't an outlier/one song wonder quality wise. Listened to the 2 singles from before this in addition to Pussy is God and Femme Fatale also. Can't wait for new material.

51oxSf-EudL._SS500.jpg

7. Belle and Sebastian - The Boy With the Arab Strap | 1998 | ★★★ | Recommended track: Sleep the Clock Around

My third Belle and Sebastian album. It was pleasant enough but I think these albums will have 1 or 2 great standouts that I'll throw into my regular rotation and the rest will just blend in mostly. In the case of this release the standouts would be Sleep the Clock Around and The Rollercoaster Ride.

8. Dashboard Confessional - Dusk and Summer | 2006 | ★★ | Recommended track: Don't Wait

Dashboard Confessional is a band that was up my alley musically in my teens but I never gave them a chance or got into them. Not sure why since they were one of the bigger artists of their type when you weren't getting into bands that blew up on a huge level. This is only the second album of theirs I've heard behind their 2018 release but this the better of the two. Good thing since the other one was really bad. Still this wasn't too inspiring. Going to try some of their earlier, more stripped down material as a last ditch effort and if that doesn't work I'll stop.

Week two:

La Luz - Floating Features (2018)
surf rock/garage rock
It sounds pretty good, but even after a few listens, I still have trouble distinguishing individual songs. It all just melts together into one big surf/garage medley, with only the bookend tracks leaving much of an impression. That said, those tracks are pretty sweet, so maybe I just need to spend some more time with this one.

KOTO - Bye Bye Teens Lullaby (2018)
alt-idol
This isn't as HI-NRG!!!!!!!! as I was expecting KOTO to be, which is both a good and bad thing. Only the final track really has that old frenetic energy, but the other songs are more diverse and polished than before. Probably a good long-term move.

Negoto - ex Negoto (2011)
J-rock/alternative rock
The band's announcement that they're calling it quits this year was as good an opportunity as any to go back and re-examine their back catalog. 5 and Vision have some really good synth-heavy J-rock tunes. This album is just as energetic but doesn't quite have the same fizz; Negoto at this point are still better at drama and noise than crafting really hooky, memorable songs.

U.S. Girls - In a Poem Unlimited (2018)
indie pop/disco
I came into this one not knowing a ton about U.S. Girls except that I keep seeing them mentioned as something that might be up my alley. In a Poem Unlimited is surprisingly chock full of disco inferno, where the shit that's on fire is the patriarchy in all its forms. The political content is somewhat lost on me, something I have to read about in articles rather than absorb directly through the lyrics (which I tend to be bad at listening to), but you can feel the fire of the tracks.

Snail Mail - Lush (2018)
indie rock
Also mentioned in several places as something I'd like, clearly because of the 90s indie rock influences. There's a little bit of Jay Som bedroom pop in here as well. A quietly assured set of songs and a solid debut.

These are my thoughts on some of the albums I have listened so far.

Marvin GayeLet's Get It On (1973) - This is just sexy, it made me realize how alone I was while listening, next time I put this album I'll have the right company.
I love Whats's Goin On, but this is a totally different beast.

John ColtraneA Love Supreme (1965) - Even if I know nothing of the complexities of jazz, you can listen how it tries to reach something greater than oneself, this case Coltrane, through its music and succed. The devotion and passion are palpable.

The Doors – In Concert (1991) - This album made up from various live concerts from 1970. Guess it serves as a glimpse of the intensity of those live performances and while Morrison gets all the attention, Ray Manzarek, Roby Krieger and John Densmore are the unsung heroes of The Doors. Rock fans love speculating about the great albums that never were (me too), so it was nice to finally listen to The Celebration of the Lizard.

I think is time for more recent releases.

First album I've listened to this year.

Travis Scott - Astroworld.

I'm really late to this, and somehow didn't listen to this during the 2018 challenge, but the album is really deserving of all the hype it received. Sicko Mode is amazing.

2/50 2019 releases

January
The Twilight Sad - It Won't Be Like This All The Time (gloomy rock)

I feel like this Scottish band has grown leaps and bounds on this album. Heavy synths and guitars bordering on an arena style while keeping the elements that make them who they are. They consulted Robert Smith (and toured) with him and it shows. Recommended If you're in the mood for something drenched in sadness that you can move to. 5 outta 5.

James Blake - Assume Form (electronic pop)
I've listened to this a couple times so far. It has a more minimalistic electronic style dancing along on an uplifting vibe. Yet, it feels fragile. I enjoy the album but I prefer the moody messiness of his last slightly more. Recommended if you're in the mood for danceable love. 4 outta 5.

Nice nice. I'm gonna try to just do half of what I did last year. It'll still be a good amount though.

I'm not necessarily trying for more overall than last year. Biggest thing I'm trying, I think, is to not be so obsessive of just listening to current year music. Last two years I was pretty crazy with that. I want to listen to more stuff in the past that I've missed.

Week 3

2019 releases:

Toro-y-Moi-Outer-Peace-500x500.jpg

1. Toro y Moi - Outer Peace | ★★ | Recommended track: Freelance

Bounced right off of me except for Freelance tbh. Will have to give it another go.

Pre-2019 releases:

616NEP92YZL._SS500.jpg

9. SSION - O | 2018 | ★★★★ | Recommended track: 1980-99

A bit more chill than I had expected coming to this from Comeback. Very nice still. Didn't know Sky was going to be on here until I heard her on the track she features on. Will definitely be listening to more SSION albums.

s-l640.jpg

10. Aphex Twin - ...I Care Because You Do | 1995 | ★★★ | Recommended track: Alberto Balsalm

A bit bland other than Alberto Balsalm, especially in comparison to the 2 previous albums from AT. Will give it another go and see if it grows on me.

512UuUi8k0L._SS500.jpg

11. Hayley Kiyoko - Expectations | 2018 | ★★★ | Recommended track: Sleepover

The singles are definitely the highlight here but this was more solid than I had anticipated overall. Kinda vibed with the overall mood and aesthetic to this.

51hsM9Xc6qL._SS500.jpg

12. Years & Years - Palo Santo | 2018 | ★★ | Recommended track: Palo Santo

Really not a fan of Olly's vocals. Some of the songs are able to overcome this but most don't.

8ce77b1e4f28d47bd0e0d3d1205613ce.jpg

13. MNEK - Language | 2018 | ★★★½ | Recommended track: Tongue

A better album than I was expecting. Figured this would be single heavy which is still slightly is but this has some nice album tracks as well. Correct, Tongue, and Body are incredible.

105853.jpeg

14. Christine and the Queens - Chris | 2018 | ★★★★½ | Recommended track: Doesn't Matter

Actually listened to both the english and french version of this in one go. Loved both.

City Girl - Somnolent Nova (2019)
chill-hop
I don't know how City Girl can put out four albums in the space of about a year and have each one show clear signs of evolution while still being compelling listens. This is the third I've listened to since I discovered City Girl only a few months ago. I don't think this is quite up to the level of Neon Impasse in some ways but it's a much more consistent album, and it sounds much more lush than previous outings.

Shiggy Jr. - DANCE TO THE MUSIC (2018)
J-pop
Most of this album passed by in a pleasant but not particularly interesting haze--with every release Shiggy Jr. gets a little more generic--but then どうかしちゃってんだ hits and it's the catchiest earworm they've recorded in years. If you need more innocuous disco pop in your life, there are worse places to find it than this.

cero - POLY LIFE MULTI SOUL (2018)
jazz
Lots of polyrhythms and chill beats, but didn't really stand out to me on the first few listens.

Vantage - Metro City (2015)
future funk
Yup, that's definitely a future funk album.

Mirah - Understanding (2018)
indie pop/folk
I've been listening to Mirah for decades now and her past few albums have largely been refinements to a well-established template. In recent years I've felt a bit of emotional distance from her songs (the breezy intimacy of songs like Telescope is long gone), but that seems like an intentional shift in perspective rather than any weakness in the material. Whereas empathy used to exude from every pore of her songs, Mirah now wields it with intent and precision on tracks like Information. It took me a while to appreciate her last album, and I expect the same will be true here.

I'll join Orpheus

Recording of the weekend

1/50

Just finished listening to this recording in full and it's one deep listen. I'd like to own this record but it looks to be out of print at this point.

I love how Genre: BASIC CHANNEL / DUB TECHNO, ELECTRONIC is a genre. It's simply a very humorous over-simplification.

More information: https://www.discogs.com/Our-Lady-Of-The-Flowers-Holiday-In-Thule/release/13044725

Low-fidelity sound-worlds, painted with infra-bass, Tibetan-gong feedback, fields recordings of religious / ceremonial sources, and crude homemade electronic devices.
Recorded to a cheap handheld digital recorder (Olympus WS-853), then processed / arranged / edited at Lighthouse Beach, Port Huron Michigan, during middle-of-the-night sessions between August 2016 - September 2018.

Jay Glass Dubs-Epitaph

Listened to the new Jay Glass Dubs full length entitled Epitaph yesterday and it's one heady, disorienting ride much like the last album I posted about. This presents a more tangled, pop leaning experience while the THE OUR LADY OF THE FLOWERS COLLECTIVE presents it's wares in much subtler hues. Previous Jay Glass Dubs recordings were disorienting but this recording is absolutely swimming with layers of synth and fractured voices where songs drift in and out of the length of the full length in a very dream like fashion. The recordings compositional thought processes are not unlike what the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never has been working with over the last bunch of years but still remaining quite singular. It's definitely the best batch of sounds I've yet heard in 2019 and well worth ones time if any of this sounds like something you can wrap your mind around.

Didn't listen to anything new to me this past week since I've been too busy video gaming but I'm hoping to hop back into things asap. Can't believe the first month is almost over already. People can post updates whenever they think they'll be done with new stuff for the month and I'll do an update probably next week around tuesday or wednesday to give time.

Only one thing this week, and almost as an afterthought:

Jessy Bulbo - Saga Mama (2006)
punk/riot grrl
Jessy Bulbo is responsible for the only song I still remember from the GTAV soundtrack, Maldito. I've been trying to track down a copy of this album on and off over the past few years (finding an online Mexican record store that ships to Canada is difficult when you don't read Spanish) but it turns out it's on streaming services now. Based on Maldito, I was hoping for something resembling Kathleen Hanna fronting the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and this is kind of that. It is, however, more atonal and scream-y than I was expecting. Maldito still hits like a freight train but the rest of the album only sort of works for me, with the back half working a lot better than the front.

This was a pretty solid month for me, lots of stuff came out that I liked that was new while some of it was me looking into albums I missed or groups I hadn't heard yet. Figured I'd share my thoughts on some of the stuff I listened to for the first time in Jan.

Soilwork - Verkligheten (2019) || Melodic Death Metal / Groove Metal
Song: Arrival

This is a very solid album from Soilwork. It continues the sound they evolved along with their return to melodic death in The Living Infinite. I think it's some of their top three work, but like every album since Natural Born Chaos, I don't think it captures that break out mind-blowing sound that they had back in the early 2000s. Still, it's very good and I'm glad they're continuing to evolve while holding tight to their roots.

Chthonic - Battlefields of Asura (2018) || Symphonic Melodic Death/Black Metal
Song: Millenia's Faith Undone

I'm not entirely certain how I missed this, but I suppose it's because it's been so long since their last actual album. I found it to be a fantastic listen and further grows Chthonic's signature sound - symphonic black/death mixed with traditional instruments giving it a very heavy sound with folk touches. Upon first listen, the first half sounds all very similar. Yet upon subsequent listens, each track had its own identity and powerful sound. I've yet to figure out where it places in a ranking, but it's very high up there.

Dance with the Dead - Loved to Death (2018) || Eletronic / Synth / Rock
Song: From Hell

I really enjoyed the B-Sides album from this group, as it focused a lot more on heavy rock and metal elements mixed with electronic dance music. I only gave the album 3-4 listens and can't really hear anything standout from it in my head. I may need to give it some more. There wasn't a single bad track, but it call kind of blurred together unlike the B-Sides album. However, I will say that its lovely driving music.

Eyes Unclouded - The End of The Seasons (2018) || Melodic Death / Metalcore

Song: The End Of The Seasons

I'm a sucker for Japanese Melodic Death Metal, and this album was quite good. This album has a nice sound to it with with some wonderful leads and melodies to it. It's very heavy with some more dry growls, but they do get quite low. I really enjoyed this one, but some of the songs had their pacing wrecked by some (fairly brutal) breakdowns that went on a bit too long.

Hymn Above Traumatic Emotion - Ombra (2018) || Melodic Death / Symphonic Metal
Song: Himmel

This was a very interesting album from an interesting band. They're a melodeath/sympho band with a male growler and a female clean singer. They seem to be equally balanced, so it doesn't feel like that usual 'female fronted goth metal band with a growling guitarist' that you see everywhere. They mixed Japanese melodeath with Japanese symphonic metal, so it feels a bit like Onmyouza with a darker and heavier side. The cleans are pretty and the production is pretty nice. I wouldn't be surprised if this group started out as a Touhou Doujin Circle.

Apink - PERCENT (2019) || Kpop
Song: Eung Eung

Apink made a pretty fierce comeback last year with "I'm So Sick", which showed a more mature side of the long-time idols. This latest single continues on with the mature vibe, skirting the bubblegum pop sound for something more spacepop with an 80s vibe to it. The (mini) album has a solid identity and sound to it, feeling very cohesive and well produced. The writing on the lead single is infectious, as the track has been stuck in my head for weeks after release. I'm excited to see what else they bring out this year, as these two comebacks have been powerful.

Born of Osiris - The Simulation (2019) || Progressive Deathcore / Metalcore

Song: Cycles of Tragedy

I only got into Born of Osiris around 2015, when Soul Sphere released. I loved that album immediately, but never found myself digging their old sound that much. With the re-recordings of all the old songs, I hadn't heard much new from Born of Osiris for quite a while. This album dropped and I immediately listened to it three times in a row. Part of that is because its rather short, but it's just quite a good listen. Every track feels heavy with a great melody to it while having its own direction. BoO have some of the prettiest solos as well. They truly shine in every track.

Hollow Front - Still Life (2018) || Progressive Metalcore
Song: Backbone

This album was a little bit of a disappointment, but not because its bad by any means. The first song I heard by this group was the title track, which is a beautiful and crushing song that has some haunting guitars with some pretty heartfelt lyrics. Every song in comparison just doesn't sound as good, though I wonder if more listens will make them stand out more on their own. They don't feel as creative or emotional and all kind of have that djenty metalcore sound. Between all that are some pretty great riffs, but I'm personally a little tired of that muddy djent sound.

WJSN - WJ Stay? (2019) || Kpop
Song: La La Love

WJSN is one of my favorite Kpop groups. They've been incredibly consistent with every release since their very first (which was kind of a disappointing track to launch their careers with.) They keep their cosmic sound and have a very creative distribution of lines, letting each of the ten vocalists stand out exactly where they need to. The raps are inspired and each track flows with a beauty to it. With the group originally being 13 members, I feel like the remaining 10 have been able to explore more of their vocal styles. Personally, I think WJSN is a far better than group than Twice, which is one of the biggest Kpop groups.

Q'ulle - 我夢者羅 / My Dreamer (2019) || Alt-Idol / Jpop
Song: Survival

Q'ulle is a wonderful little group that puts their heart into every song. They're more of a Jpop / Jrock group these days than an Idol group and each album and single has sounded bigger and better than the last. The album is a very varied, with some punkish pop-rock songs, more higher pitched tracks that would sound right at home on an anime OP, and then some straight up metal with growls. This would be a surprise if I hadn't known that one of the members went on to form a melodic death metal band herself. It's a pretty unique and fun listen as it seems to span a wide array of sound.

REGiNA KiSS - Idol Shredder (2018) || Alt-Idol / Jpop / Jrock
Song: Nozenkazura

This is my favorite group that I've come across in a long time. I saw their name a few times on a blog but skipped them for some reason. After finally listening to a few of their tracks, I was floored by how the two vocalists work together. Kia and An are both fantastic singers and complement the other incredibly well. When they both hit the same notes, its like their voices are weaving together. The album is incredibly solid with many great songs that I've been blasting on repeat for weeks now. They're a former idol group that reformed into an actual band upon losing their third member and the result has been some fantastic jrock. If I were to highly recommend anything from what I've listened to this month, REGiNA KiSS is at the very top.

Cloudbreaker - Confinement is Finite (2019) || Progressive Melodic Death Metal
Song: Emptiness (All That Is Left)

Skimming through this album in 30s chunks initially made it sound somewhat generic and uninspired, but I realized I was very wrong. Upon listening to it fully through a few times, it's actually quite good and very unique. The tracks flow well and have a pretty bright spark of creativity in them. The album has a very epic feel to it, as if its trying to tell a story through its instrumentals alone. The production is quite good, but it has a grimeyness to it that makes it feel a little more raw while retaining its clarity. I enjoyed it, but its a slow burn to get into it at first.

GFRIEND - Time for us (2019) || Kpop
Song: Sunrise

GFRIEND has a particular sound to them, often laced with tons of violin and piano. This album has a very "GFRIEND sound" to it that makes it in line with most of their previous releases, but its evolving their sound overall. There are faster tracks laced with electronica, bouncing summer bops, and many songs that sound distinctly different from their usual style while still keeping everything that makes them GFRIEND. It's a very pretty album that I'm certainly satisfied with, but I do wish they'd take a few more creative risks.

Evergrey - The Atlantic (2019) || Progressive Metal
Song: Weightless

Everygrey's newest album leaves me with mixed feelings. I quite like it, its one of the heaviest things they've put out in a long time. However, I feel the pacing of the album gets damaged by far too many slow songs or straight up ballads. Everything feels slower, and sometimes there are a few back to back. It's not that a slow pace is bad, its just harder for me to get into when I'm driving home or plugging away at work. I'll say its one of their best albums in a long time, but I'm dearly missing some of the speed of their earlier works.

I'm eagerly looking forward to what else I'll find in 2019 or what else will be released from my favorite groups.

I wanna do a bit more than just list what I'm listening to, so I think from here on I'm going to at least post about my album of the month and maybe a surprise of the month.

January 2019:

Album of the Month: Soilwork "Verkligheten" - (Melodic Death metal)
Song Sample: Arrival
Soilwork has to be one of the most consistent bands in the genre. I've personally loved everything they put out, even through massive lineup changes. I was worried when they lost their guitarists, but then they knocked it out of the park with The Living Infinite. Before that album I'm not sure I'd say a melodeath band could realistically keep a double album interesting enough to justify its existence, but they did. After that I was kind of worried they blew their load a bit early and wouldn't have anything left in the tank. Two albums later and they've still got it. I really have no idea how they do it. This one's a bit less heavy than the last two or so, incorporating some more rock vibes, even some prog rock vibes at limited moments. It's got good use of guest vocalists from Arch Enemy and Amorphis on two tracks. Overall it's just extremely catchy, as usual. Bjorn is still one of the best singers in all of metal and he doesn't rest here. Vocal melodies will get in your head and the riffs are great. Really can't ask for more than this at this point in their career.

Surprise of the Month: Old Solar "SEE" - (Post Rock)
Bandcamp Link
Never heard of this before, but the amazing cover art caught my attention. Also, I can be a big fan of good post rock. The theming feels a bit cliched as four of the five tracks go through the seasons. But, I was blown away. It's mostly typical Explosions in the Sky style buildup and climax post rock, but so ridiculously well done. It feels orchestral and classical at times. Each song is a journey and the album is incredibly well put together. Everything flows well from one track to the next.

I've been trying to stick to an album a week, and interestingly enough I had more of a metal tinge going on for January. This is mainly because I introduced myself to Deafheaven at the tail-end of last year with their latest.

1. Deafheaven - Sunbather (Often hailed as their best among fans, after repeated listens I place it second after Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. Which is much more concise and consistent, plus the highs are a bit higher for me. Not to say that Sunbather doesn't have highs, because it certainly does. The songs Sunbather, Vertigo, and especially the closing track The Pecan Tree are incredible.)

8.5/10

2. My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything (Carrying on the shoegaze vibe brought forth from Deafheaven, I got on a bit of a MBV kick. I connected with Loveless in a way I never had before, but MBV still reigns as my favorite. This could change as time goes on, of course. I decided to hit up their debut and I found it to be much more experimental while carrying their signature sound than I expected. I guess I thought it was going to be a bit more generic, but boy oh boy I was wrong. Lovely album.)

8.5/10

3. Deafheaven - New Bermuda (Blew me away on first listen but I have come down a little on it. It's still a good album but lacks the emotional connection of their other works).

7.5/10

4. Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow (This is her best work, incredibly consistent while being catchy and carrying the atmosphere she has brought to her previous works. This isn't Sharon going pop which some may be led to believe on listening to a single or two. She branches out with synthesizers, but it's essentially her. The singles even worked for me more, especially Comeback Kid, when listened to their sequence on the album which brought context.)

8.5/10 (Could go up)

5. Mastodon - Cold Dark Place (This is kind of cheating since it's an EP, but oh well. This is most classic rock sounding Mastodon release since Crack the Skye, but it in no way captures the essence of that album. It's a fine release, but somewhat of a disappointment considering the initial hype of being a collection of gems from Brent Hinds that have been held back because they didn't fit in with previous albums. Instead, it's mostly outtakes from Once More Around the Sun. It's fine, it will be in rotation when I go through their discography, but it can't touch their greater works. The chorus of Toes to Toes is some catchy shit, but then again, all I have to hear is some alternate picking over some chords with Brent crooning and I'm hook, line, and sinker.)

January Update
2B or not 2B - 4/50 Albums | 2/?? 2019 Albums | 2/?? Non-2019 Albums

2019 Albums -
  1. Papa Roach - Who Do You Trust?
    Alternative Rock/Pop Rock || USA || 22/01/19 || ★★½
    Papa_Roach_–_Who_Do_You_Trust.png

I had high hopes for this album, the songs released before the album came out were okay, nothing particularly amazing but they weren't terrible. But after listening to the album I see why they chose them songs, they were the best on the album. It just seemed all over the place and they couldn't stick with one genre for the entire thing, with the latter half of the album being generally bad.

  2. Bring Me The Horizon - Amo
    Pop Rock/Electronic Rock || England || 25/01/19 || ½
    AmoBringMetheHorizon.png

I don't know why I even bothered listening to this album, it's honestly the worst thing I've ever listened to. The songs are unoriginal trash, with some of them consisting of just random annoying noise. The lyrics are terrible, it sounded like they just discovered Tumblr and took their inspiration from all the over-dramatic and stupid posts there. They just seem to be making a show of themselves, with this album and how they've been acting whenever they're being interviewed. If I could give this zero I would.

Non-2019 Albums
  1. Within Temptation - The Unforgiving (2011)
    Symphonic Metal || The Netherlands || 24/01/19 || ★★★★½
    The_Unforgiving_album_cover.jpg

Until Hydra I never really listenes to Within Temptation, and even after I was only listening to bits and pieces of albums. So I've decided to start with The Unforgiving and I regret not having been listening to them properly before. Their music is unique and Sharon is a brilliant singer. Can't wait to listen to their new album this year.

  2. Coldrain - Faithless (2017)
    Metalcore|| Japan || 29/01/19 || ★★★½
    39978789643_2e51ac731f_o.jpg

Coldrain aren't a very unique band when it comes to Metalcore, but they one of the better bands in the genre. The singers voice works perfectly with the band, and is the only thing that really sets them apart in the genre. This album is something I could regularly listen to, but wouldn't be my favourite.

Whitesnake/Lovehunter/Long Way from Home/★★★½
Heard this was one of the top rock albums of all time, and while i wouldn't go THAT far, it was some excellent blues rock with a kind of raw sound that made be think of live music played in a bar, but a really good show.

Rick Wakeman/Journey to the Center of the Earth 2014/The Hansbach/★★★½
Don't know if I'd play any one song from this on repeat, but as an album it's a cool journey with a fantastic mix of classical and rock. Wiah they were mixed together better, they're just kinda separated here. The King Arthur remake is a top ten album for me and i wanted to love this one a ton more than i did. Maybe more listens will have it grow on me, but as it stands it was good not great, or maybe my expectations were too high.

Genesis/Trespass/The Knife/★★★★½
Never heard the album in its entirety, though i heard individual songs from it. Always loved The Knife, which i consider to be the theme song of GWB and the second Iraq war, but i found myself really enjoying Looking for Someone and Stagnation. The other songs were good as well and the beginning of Genesis style is evident (before Phil Collins and Steve Hackett) which alone makes this a must listen for me.

Yes/The Yes Album/Starship Trooper/★★★★★
Can i count this one if I've already heard two songs from it, and those two make up half the running time if the album? Screw it, I'm counting it anyway. This is a masterpiece. I saw Yes live a few times (late 00s and last year) and had a blast both times, also a huge Rick Wakeman fan (yeah, i know he's not on this album) so i should've done this deep dive much earlier, but I'm using this thread as my excuse, and this is the best album to come out of it yet. Every song is one i could see myself putting on at any time. Got a chill guitar solo as the second track and lots of rocking.

Honestly, i could've given best song to say least 4 songs on here, but Starship Trooper is my dad's favorite song of all time so I'll give it to that one, mainly cause my dad's the one who introduced me to the proof he listened to as a teenager all the way back when i was a toddler.

Pink Floyd/Dark Side of the Moon/On the Run/★★★★★
The alternate OST to The Wizard of Oz, and it's really trippy. The use of sound effects in some songs (Money, and the crazy laugh in Brain Damage) is interesting and unique. I've heard other Floyd albums before, but i can see why this one is so loved, even if I'd personally rate The Wall right up with this one.

my music listening is super sporadic. listened to several hundred albums in the first half of lsat year and almost nothing in the second. we'll see how this year goes

James Blake | Assume Form | 2019 | ★★★

James Blake continues to make nice yet uninspiring music. His ambition lies in subtlety, but it's a subtlety that lacks depth. At this point in his career I have given up on him achieving his potential and will simply enjoy hearing his pleasant and inoffensive music with a couple very good tracks per album.

Ariana Grande's Thank U Next is the first album I've truly liked this year. Hopefully it bodes well for future.

Tom Tom Club - Tom Tom Club (1981)
new wave
I didn't know until last week that Mariah Carey's Fantasy is basically just her singing over Tom Tom Club's Genius of Love. So if absolutely nothing else, this album is solid because of that connection. Wordy Rappinghood and Genius of Love are a fun one-two dance party punch, but the rest of the album can't quite keep up. It falls into a plodding motorik rhythm that's never unpleasant but rarely excites.

Knower - Life (2016)
Knower - Let Go (2013)
electropop/funk
I keep forgetting about this band and rediscovering them months later when someone inevitably posts a Knower or Louis Cole video. The live band seshs are still my favourite expression of Knower's madness, but the albums express the same ridiculous energy through synths and samples instead. If anything, it hits harder on record because of how crisp and explosive everything sounds. Often aggressively juvenile (vaguely NSFW if your workplace is puritanical) and exuberant, Knower doesn't necessarily have a lot of variety (though LIFE shows an expansion of Knower's oeuvre) but who CARES, it's fun as shit.

haruru犬love dog天使 - lost lost dust dream (2018)
rap
Has a narcotic vibe and a sound in the same neighborhood as trap (maybe?) that's not really my thing.

Cicada - formula (2016)
city pop/r&b
At first this sounds like Monari Wakita with less bubblegum and more vocoder: a neo-city-pop album with a heavy lounge/R&B vibe, but with nothing as catchy as anything Mona's done. So far, it's mostly flown under my radar when I've put it on: great background music, but doesn't quite rise to the level of demanding your attention at all. Probably need to listen to it more, though; already my initial annoyance at the saccharine qualities of the vocoder has faded.

8.5/10

3. Deafheaven - New Bermuda (Blew me away on first listen but I have come down a little on it. It's still a good album but lacks the emotional connection of their other works).

7.5/10

Deafheaven is wonderful. They caught me by surprise and I don't even remember when or how I first came across them. I should give Sunbather a few more listens as I gravitated towards New Bermuda more myself.

While they're not all that similar, I got a lot of the same emotional hits from a group called Harakiri For The Sky. They're not as avantgarde as Deafheaven but they hit that heartfelt depressive post-black feel while also keeping a bit of the intensity (especially on the new album.)

Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven - Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Turn of a Friendly Card - The Alan Parsons Project

Both were absolutely phenomenal. Games People Play may be in my top 5 songs ever now.

I hope those of y'all that like more ~experimental music (I'm bad with genres and who knows what it would be anyway) tried the new Xiu Xiu.

It's my fave of theirs, or at least the best since The Air Force.
