lol, I need to get on this one.

Wish I had gotten through more books. :/ Best book this month was A History of the Wife by Marilyn Yalom. I had been yearning for a more academic text than what is normally available through my public library and this totally delivered. It does rely a little too much on fictional portrayals of wives in Western culture -- like, really, do I need to read a page summary of Romeo and Juliet, especially since they didn't make it far enough to be husband and wife? -- but otherwise, it had interesting insights to the history role of the concept of "wife" and marriage in general. I knew a lot of women's history in the more modern era, as well as Renaissance and Medieval eras, so the most interesting part was reading about wives in ancient Greece and Rome. It was a bit of a kick in the (metaphorical, in my case) nuts to read the author moan about the backlash to feminist progress represented by Reagan's election. (This book was published in 2001. Oh honey, just you wait til 2016...)

Oh I guess I missed Animal Farm and didn't count Caliban's War as two (595p) so I guess I hit 49 books last month. I'm still going to hit 50 without having to count any as two though.

Noticed the mistakes whilst adding completion dates. Woops

I'm hoping this month to watch all the movies I need to finish the challenge and complete it for August.

Just finished Dying of the Light, and am thoroughly disappointed. It has some interesting ideas going on and it has one hell of an opening. That first chapter is pure Martin, pulling me thousands of years into the future with a simple history of a rogue planet. I really like his prose when he's being matter of fact about things. But then the rest of the book just kept driving me away from itself, with very unsympathetic characters all around, a story that is simply not very interesting and a focus on a culture that is so dumb and hateful that i just wish everybody in it went away for good. I realize it's somewhat the point of the book but i just feel it would be like focusing an entire book in Mereen.

...oh.

Anyway, being a first book and all, it's understandable that Martin was still far from peaking. Oh well.

You can start now. Many of us just log our movie/book intake for fun, very few actually do (or even intend to) make it in at end of year. It's not uncommon to see someone with 300 movies and 10 books logged.
