With Alison doing the worm in between them. BTW - just watched The Hurricane Heist. Hooo boy was that stupid. I can't wait to hear them tear that one apart. Should be a good episode.

divination - 48/50 books 35/50 movies

You've been having a fun year! Are you following any sort of guide? Your movie list reads a bit like the AFI 100 list.

Did you like Traister's book? She's been one of my favorite writers on the feminist beat for the last 10 years. I bought All the Single Ladies pre-election, spent most of the year obsessively reading election coverage instead, and then found myself recoiling at the thought of reading the implicit optimism of the book's concept after the election.

I was oddly relieved to see her announce that her new book of women's rage was available for pre-order. I've very much wanted to read a book of hers for the last year and couldn't bring myself to read either Single Ladies or Big Girls Don't Cry.

I've been working off of a list my movie buff friend gave me as well as BFI's 100 best films of all time. I realized that I hadn't seen hardly any classic films, so I decided to change that this year!

I loved the book actually! I initially had the same thoughts as you about reading it, but I figured what better time to read it than right now when women are taking such a prominent role in politics? Def excited for her new book as well. Anytime I see her post a new article on NYMag I have to read it right away lol.

Not Asleep - 39/50 books | 27/50 movies

Books:
  1. Radium Girls - Kate Moore - ★★★★★
  2. Quilting with a Modern Slant - Rachel May - ★★★
  3. Trip of the Tongue - Elizabeth Little - ★★★★
  4. Code Girls - Liz Mundy- ★★★★★
  5. Victoria and Abdul - Shrabani Basu - ★★★1/2

Movies:
  1. The Chinese Exclusion Act (American Experience, 2018) - ★★★★★

  6. Crime After Crime (2011) - ★★★★
  7. Phyllis and Harold (2008) - ★★1/2
For anyone interested in women's history (or labor or military history), both Radium Girls and Code Girls were amazing. Radium Girls is about watch dial painters in the early 20th century who painted with radium and suffered terrible disabilities and illnesses as a result. Their lawsuits against their companies were important for establishing workers' right to safety in the workplace.

Code Girls is about the women codebreakers in the Army and Navy in WWII. The units they worked in were precursors to the NSA. Men were needed for combat service, so this technical work fell to some 7000 women, who enlisted and/or were commissioned to do cryptographic work that helped ensure the success of naval and land campaigns against the Axis powers.

Code Girls was a little better than Radium Girls in zooming out to the larger societal context of women working at a time when women generally didn't work or encouraged to go to college but both paint vivid portraits of these (mostly young) women and of the times they lived in.

divination I love her NYMag columns! It always feels like she so eloquently expresses the incoherent, scared and angry spluttering and flailing that's constantly in my head. I'll see if I can work in reading Single Ladies this summer. :)

I sort of envy your watching all those movies for the first time. I did something similar years ago (lol, I had to rent VHS to watch most of them) and it was immensely gratifying.

Books:
23. Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said - Philip K. Dick
24. Robots and Empire - Isaac Asimov

Soooo I'm a book behind. I've been really slacking with reading the last few months, barely catching up. Hopefully I'll manage the second half of the year better. As for movies, while I'm behind on schedule, I should have no trouble reaching 50 by the end of the year.

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit! It was my first experience with Joyce, but I actually found it to be pretty managable in terms of content. It's a bit hard to understand in the beginning before Stephen matures and grows up, but the way the novel follows him as he grows is fascinating. Give it a shot, it's not a very long book.

Haven't had time to do a tally as I've been vacationing in Montreal. A lot of updating to do for the month, so may take a maitaince month.

I'm really enjoying Less, the Pulitzer winner from last year. And David Lynch's biography / memoir has been instructive. Won't You Be My Neighbor is one of my favorites this year and I've never seen a theater cry together like that. First Reformed and Hereditary were very interesting and well done although I don't personally love them. Still recommend them fully because I know the type of person who will love them.

June Update:

2B or not 2B - 12/50 Books | 20/50 Movies

Books:

  1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
Still making my way through the series. The writing has gotten better, but I feel whenever it gets to a point where someone has died that it just happens and is quite anti-climatic . Guess I'll just have to see how the rest of the books are handled. ★★★★

Movies:
  1. Your Name
While body swapping isn't a new concept, it's rarely done well, and I think Your Name is a good example of it done right. The characters were great, the story was amazing, it was something different and I would defiantly recommend it!!
    ★★★★

  2. We Need to Talk About Kevin
This isn't an amazing film, and definitely not one where you have to try and figure out the twist. But it is gripping and makes you want to keep watching. The performances are good, sometimes a bit confusing at times, but overall it's a good movie.
    ★★★½

  3. Hereditary
I went in not expecting anything amazing, but this movie is almost a joke. It was over the top and overly dramatic for no reason other than being edgy. The acting wasn't great and the story is just a big jumble. It was okay at the beginning, which is the reason I'm giving it 2 and a half stars, but it quickly goes downhill with it's nonsense.
    ★★½

I don't like The Black Comoany that much to be honest. It's a bit juvenile for something that's suppose to be dark fantasy, and most characters were different shades of "cool guy with a dark past" and "I'm too old for this shit.", the physician wasn't terribly engaging either.

I understand if you wouldn't stick with it because its a big commitment but the books change into a newish/great series after the first three. It's more of an adventure.
