January

1. Child of Light - 12 hrs

I've been wanting to play this since the reveal trailer and finally got around to it! I highly enjoyed it. I still wish you could use three party members.

2. The Initiate / 6 hrs

This was pretty good if bought on sale. I like escape room type games.

3. Silence / 4 hrs

I usually like Daedalic but I'm not a huge fan of Whispered World, just because Sadwick was such a garbage character. This however was surprisingly enjoyable and a quick light adventure with absolutely stunning art.

3 games / 22 hrs / 2018

Only beat about 10 games last year. And with my backlog only getting bigger and bigger, I'll jump in this year as well.

January
1: Hidden my Game by Mom (iOS)
Completed: 1/2/18 | Playtime: 1 hour | Rating: 7.0
Quirky little game that started my year with a laugh. I haven't enjoyed mobile games or indies for a while, but this one motivated me to look a bit beyond the bigger titles this year. That ending too. Brilliant!

2: Hidden my Game by Mom 2 (iOS)
Completed: 1/3/18 | Playtime: 1 hour | Rating: 6.8
More of the same, but still as short and sweet as before.

3. My Brother ate my Pudding (iOS)
Completed: 1/3/18 | Playtime: 40 minutes | Rating: 6.0
A funny twist on the Hidden Game formula, but with less levels and less inventive puzzles. I guess I could put the whole series down as one game. It'd be cool if they release a collection of all the titles on 3DS.

4: The Legend of Zelda (3DS - Original system: NES)
Completed: 1/3/18 | Playtime: 14 hours | Rating: 9.0
Finally finished the original. It now ranks among my favorite Zelda titles. The game is hard but not unfairly so, kind of like the Souls series these days. And playing it without a guide, rather; making my own as I went, alleviated the experience and made it into something special. Maybe one day I'll sit down and give the Second Quest a go as well.

5: Inside (PC)
Completed: 1/6/18 | Playtime: 7 hours | Rating: 8.2
Played through the game twice and loved both endings. The setting is amazing, unlike anything I've ever played. And damn those dogs. My heart was pounding like crazy every time they chased me.

6. Stranger Things: The Game (iOS)
Completed: 1/14/18 | Playtime: 6 hours | Rating: 7.2
This game took me by surprise. I half expected a cheap cash-in. But it turns out to be a pretty good Zelda clone in its own right, with nice nods to old game classics while staying faithful to the source material. I honestly think this ranks among the better TV-show/movie-to-video game adaptions I've played. Kind of felt like that Scott Pilgrim game a while back. They should really release a Steam version so more people would play it.

7. The Walking Dead: A New Frontier (PC)
Completed: 1/19/18 | Playtime: 8 hours | Rating: 8.6
After a disappointing Season 2 and an extremely forgettable side-story (Michonne) I lost all faith in Telltale to recover the magic of TWD Season 1. Bought this one on a whim during the last winter sale and decided to give it a go with super low expectations. Against all odds and popular internet opinion, I actually loved it! The characters and their relationships with each other were easily the strong points of the game, Javier was likable, Clem was way better as a side-character than being the main focus, and the surrounding cast gave me better vibes than those in S2. The only thing S2 did better really was the main villain. Really looking forward to Season 4 now.

8. Gravity Rush 2 (PS4)
Beaten: 1/28/18 | Playtime: 32 hours | Rating: 8.7
The servers supposedly going down halfway throughout January finally pushed me to play this game. And what a delight it was. A wonderful cast of characters, and Kat shines as one of Sony's mascot characters. The whole game has this light hearted feel-good and over the top fantastical vibe to it that is missing in much of gaming today. I'm still wrapping up the large number of side missions and extra content. But the studio went out of its way to go up and beyond what was already established in the first game. The only thing that frustrated at times was the camera and targeting enemies in the thick of battle. It made a few boss fights near the end more frustrating than they should have been. Aside from that, a great game and one of my favorites this generation.

February

9. Pokémon Moon (3DS)
Completed 2/24/18 | Playtime: 135 hours | Rating: 8.8
A new region and great setting for a different kind of Pokémon adventure. Despite all the changes and additions, the game still stayed true to the core of what makes Pokémon games fun in the first place. Gotta admit, the first half of the game is a bit of a drag. The story is nothing to write home about, and tutorials hinder the flow and pacing in a horrible way. Once the game picks up it doesn't let go though, and overall I enjoyed the final parts of the game way more than I did Pokémon X a few years back. Also, props to Gamefreak for the designs of the Pokémon and characters. World building is an important thing and I feel they really nailed it with this installment.

Post-game final conclusions: completing the Pokédex took a great amount of hours but I never once got bored doing so, and that's a first in a Pokémon game. I think it was a good choice of Gamefreak to limit the Alolan Pokédex to 300. It made the whole thing doable, yet challenging enough. Trading, breeding and hunting down legendary and mythical monsters never felt so smooth and fun, and I can say I'm very satisfied with the post-game content this time around.

10. Batman: The Telltale Series (PC)
Completed: 2/15/18 | Playtime: 8 hours | Rating: 7.8
After finding the third season of The Walking Dead surprisingly more enjoyable than expected, I decided to tackle the Batman series next. I knew about the technical issues, so I wasn't too surprised to see the game ran like shit at times, even with some of the settings on medium. That aside, the game itself was actually rather good. I liked the new backstory they gave Bruce and his family. And the ability to see things and make choices from his perspective rather than just playing his alter ego made playing as Batman much more satisfying. The scenes with Selina/Catwoman were a treat too. The villains were a bit of a hit and miss though, I liked the general build-up they did with Harvey becoming Two-face, but it didn't pay off as well as it could have. Penguin was just kind of there, and Lady Arkham felt a bit forced and undercooked. I expect better things from season 2 in this regard, with John Doe/Joker slowly making a grand entrance. Hopefully we'll see more of Harvey, and have some of those early choices from the first season pay off.

11. Final Fantasy XV (PS4)

Completed: 2/17/18 | Playtime: 100 hours | Rating: 9.2
The final piece of DLC really got me back into the game, and finally getting that platinum only made me hunger for more. Luckily the game delivers in spades. And while I officially finished the story last year and got my platinum now, I feel there is enough here to keep me going for a little while longer. With the Royal Edition and second season of DLC coming up, I'm glad I returned to Eos to discover what secrets its dungeons still have hidden.

March

12. Into the Breach (PC)
Beaten 3/7/18 | Playtime: 5 hours | Rating: 8.5

13. World of Warcraft: Legion (PC)

Final Raid Done | Playtime: 602 hours | Rating: 9.2
Finished the final raid and wrapping up the last few questlines before I start leveling alts. Legion became one of my favorite expansions, and it reaffirmed my faith in Blizzard to keep the franchise strong and growing over the next few years.

April

14. Florence (iOS)
Beaten 4/3/18 | Playtime: 1 hour | Rating: 6.3

15. NieR: Automata (PS4)
Beaten 5/22/18 | Playtime: 51 hours | Rating: 9.5

Notched my first for the year!

1. Diablo III: Rise of the Necromancer
PC | Time Played: 8.50 hours | Rating: 8/10
Finally getting around to finishing the campaign for my Necromancer build. Brings me back to the days of using Necro in Diablo II. Just sitting back and passively watching the chaos unfold as my minions attack everything. I have gone through Acts I-IV and will go through Act V (Reaper of Souls) soon.

Edit: Finished Reaper of Souls.

2. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls
PC | Time Played: 2.0 hours | Rating: 8/10
The fifth Act was okay. Besides the glorious opening scene, all other cinematics are of the hand-drawn variety; a shame.

Kept up with this at the old place for the first half of 2017, but fell off of it after that. Gonna go ahead and reserve this spot for this year. Would like to actually fully keep up with it for once. Thinking about a lot of replays this year though, since last year was almost entirely new games.

Finally, reserving this post and next post, judging by my results from 2017. 62 games completed in 2017 by the way

-------

1. BioShock - 16 hours
I've played a lot 10+ year old games, and most of them didn't age well. This is not the case for BioShock - surprisingly, it's still fun to play. I think I like it even more than during my first playthrough 8-9 years ago. Also, water tech in this game is still damn impressive, and art direction makes this game looks great despite low quality textures in some places. Really amazing game, I admire unique world and atmosphere, it's hard to imagine that something like this would be greenlit in the modern market. My only complaint about it is that boring and completely unnecessary escort mission near the end, so boring and painful. But other 15 hours were worth it, this is still impressive game in original form, without remaster.

2. Cabelas Trophy Bucks - 4 hours
I expected some shitty outdated hunting simulator, but this game is more close to Moorhuhn series, a simple arcade shooter with unrealistic bonus abilities like x-ray vision and slow-mo. I prefer such type of hunting simulators (not like I'm a big fan of hunting at all, but still) over that boring ugly shit like Hunting Simulator 2007 or whatever, at least Cabelas Trophy Bucks was kinda fun to play in small portions.

3. Depths of Peril - 3 hours
Eh, don't really know what to say about this one. It's an ARPG with randomly generated maps, but with a twist - there are other groups of heroes who doing the same stuff as you do. And they can complete quests before you do and take the reward. To win, you need to destroy your rivals or create an alliance with them by trading and improving relations. The idea of offline MMO is kinda interesting, and it's possible to transfer your character to next match, but this type of games just didn't clicked me and I wasn't interested enough to continue after the first victory.

4. Hard to Be a God - 20 hours
Surprisingly good RPG from eastern europe, with 2 things I didn't expect to see in such game - great english voice acting and story. There some interesting ideas, like to change roles by wearing different equipment, for examples you can dress up like a bandit and persuade local gang to stop terrorizing the nearby village. Unfortunately, gameplay didn't age well and doesn't allow to avoid combat entirely soon after visiting the first big city. Also, story is amazing, but there is no real choice and 95% of the time you just listen to dialogues and go to next quest location. I recommend taking a closer look at this game if you don't mind some chunkiness and ready to deal with occasional bugs. I'll say it again, story is the best part of this game and it was absolutely worth it to go through all this to see the ending. To make game less frustrating, buy a horse and ignore side quests, they're just unnecessary busy work most of the time and don't affect endings.

5. Kane and Lynch: Dead Men - 4 hours
NOTE: this is impression about singleplayer mode, have no idea if coop is still functioning and don't really want to know. I can't imagine how IO managed to fuck up so badly, but this game is GARBAGE. I hate literally every aspect of this game, shooting, cover mechanics, story, protagonists, music, enemy AI, save system, I can't believe it so bad for real. Guns feel terrible and bullets spread is ridiculously high, even sniper rifle sometimes don't kill the enemy at some angles or if you trying to shoot through bushes. This game also features one of the worst rocket launchers in videogames, this is useless stick that shooting smoke lines, there is no visual impact on vehicles and it's absolutely worthless against humans. Cover mechanics are broken, there is a lot "covers" that enemies shooting through, like walls and statues - at some level I decided to ignore armored vehicle that was shooting at me and run directly to the mission point, only to find out that it can shoot through ruins where rebels were hiding. There is a lot of levels where there are no covers in sight at all, long corridors and open squares means instadeath but there is nothing you can do in this situation. AI extremely stupid for both your allies and enemies, the only reason why it's hard to play this game is the extremely low health of protagonists, which forces you to stay in covers and try to shoot anyone, so incredibly frustrating and boring. Level design is very questionable and it's relatively easy to accidentally broke the game - one time I decided to ignore story dialogue in the bank and just run through the door, but halfway through game suddenly retake controls and forced me to go back and see how Lynch run through another door (!). Another example was in exchange hostage episode, near the end of the level I noticed that one of my allies for some reasons stuck in the beginning and ignored my commands, so I had to run back all the way through for him to finish the mission. Story could save the day, but it failed as well, devs tried to create serious tone, but it filled with boring cliche and plot holes. Protagonists should have been brutal gangsters, but instead, they look like complete idiots and their actions are illogical and raising a lot "what the hell are you doing" questions. Devs also effectively ruined one of the rare good thing about this game, the atmosphere of criminal drama, by sending heroes to jungles and other low-budget military action movie decorations, turning story into lifeless run and gun. Endings is another shitshow, at one ending Kane's daughter suddenly started to care about situation and people she never saw before, so game forcing you to choose "real" ending that ends as terrible as expected. No matter what you choose, game ends like shit - maybe devs tried to keep "this is serious crime drama here" line, but it failed because of how unlikable and dumb are characters are, it's incredibly unsatisfying to end game like this. Barebones gameplay, janky shooting and cover mechanics, boring predictable story, unlikable protagonists that can't just stop doing dumb shit, save system that saves your progress only between episodes and forces you to replay entire episode if the game crashed after using Alt+Tab... Overall, Kane & Lynch was a massive disappointment for me, it's not like they can't do a fun action game, Freedom Fighters was fun to play, but this game is just terrible by all accounts.

6. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - 39 hours
Wolfenstein 2 is one of those game that you enjoy a lot, but can't tell anything specific about it. It's a great experience overall, very polished and fun, but it fully depends on your playstyle and what you want from this game. If you don't care about story and game's world, then it possible to complete it in 5 hours (including cutscenes), but if you love reading game's lore and carefully explore every corner of the level, then it can take 20-30 hours of gameplay. Wolfenstein world is incredibly detailed, most levels are pure joy to explore, though I hoped there was more variety in locations. By the way, graphics are amazing, no screenshots can fully convey how magical this game looks in motion. Main Wolfenstein 2 problem is that New Order exists, we saw most of these before and Wolf2 doesn't add anything really new. It's a very solid game, but unfortunately not a masterpiece, I enjoyed it a lot and not regretting about purchasing it, but it could have been much better. Also, looking forward to DLCs, I'm not done with it yet.

7. Quell - 2 hours
Nice little puzzle game, worked perfectly on a touchscreen just as expected. I'm slowly turning my windows tablet into Steam indie machine.

8. X-Blades - 5 hours
Devil May Cry clone, made by people who never played DMC. Can't say this for sure, but it feels like developers knew about DMC only by reviews and gameplay videos. So many design fails, everything in this game is so frustrating and not fun, but it managed to stay on that "below average" level and not completely unplayable. It's not worth it anyway, even for big DMC fans, don't waste your time on it, this game has nothing to offer you outside boring gameplay and a non-existent story that ends like shit.

9. Crysis - 7 hours
Another day, another 2007 game with the shity ending, first Kane & Lynch, than X-Blades, now even a goddamn Crysis caught me of the guard and ended abruptly. I mean, this scene on an aircraft carrier with a huge alien, that was shown on countless gaming expos like E3 and pre-Gamescom events, was the ending all this time? Yeah, it's not ACTUAL ending, there is one more shit before the credits roll, but still, it feels like they've spoiled entire game before release except episode in the alien ship. This dumb cliffhanger sucks too, now I'm starting to remember that Crysis Warhead was like reading book from last chapters (yeah, I've played Warhead but not Crysis, don't ask me who the hell that happened). Game is also a mixed bag, I can't say it's terrible but at the same time, I'm not impressed, even by graphics, even on ultra settings it didn't look like those bullshots from magazines. Gameplay is meh, both first (partial openworld with koreans) and second (typical linear story driven AAA shooter with aliens) half were kinda undercooked, first hours was boring because there was too much running around empty jungles and overpowered and way too smart koreans, but last hours was boring because it was way too linear and aliens are dumb and easy to kill. So, I really don't know what to do, recommend or not recommend this game to anyone, I'll guess I just uninstall it and forget about it existence.

10. RIP 2: Strike Back - 2 hours
I didn't expect much from this one, but surprisingly, it's much better than the original RIP, a lot more interesting and fun to play. Devs did a great job, and while looks visually identically to RIP 1, it has more variety and overall better balanced. It's not just stationary turret the last man standing now, you can move around the level and even pilot tank and helicopter, there are also bosses after every 10 levels. Overall, if you want something to play just for simple fun, this Crimsonland clone is the right choice, just skip RIP 1, original is not worth playing.

11. Darkness Within: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder - 5 hours
Myst-alike first-person adventure game, with a story inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's works. You playing as detective and investigating a mysterious murder by visiting old mansions and other dark places like an abandoned cemetery. Writing is good, there is a lot of documents to read and you need to underline clues in them. There are also nightmares, and the first one is really crazy one, in a good way. Game starts very promising, but I can't say the ending was really satisfying, it was not complete shit, but still last hours not that impressive as they've could be. Overall this is a good adventure game, but only if you into this type of games, puzzles can be confusing and it's easy too stuck without knowing what to do next, so go for it if you don't mind challenge (or using a walkthrough).

12. Rise of the Tomb Raider: Blood Ties - 2 hours
Standalone story DLC, it's more adventure style than main game, there is no combat at all. The only thing you do is exploring Croft Manor and solving puzzles by reading clues. Nothing really special, Manor is way too small compared to previous Tomb Raider games, but worth to check it out if you liked main game.

13. F.E.A.R.: Perseus Mandate - 5 hours
Eh, what can I say about this one... It's basically the same F.E.A.R. with all good things and problems. Level design is very repetitive and boring, but shooting is fun, and game occasionally gives you well-directed scenes like that crazy fight against huge mech in offices. I can't say it's a great DLC, but it's just fun to quickly go through the story and shoot stuff. Though engine is shit and game crashed like crazy, but it's probably because I was trying to play it in 4K and take screenshots, UI scaling is also terrible. And people who complained about no proper hit detection in Wolfenstein 2, you probably forgot that F.E.A.R. didn't have any warnings about low health outside healthbar, I died few times because of this and don't remember that anyone complained about this back then.

14. Chaser - 10 hours
Another wasted potential. At first i actually enjoyed this game a lot, it's surprisingly decent FPS with an impressive variety of locations you going to visit and well-directed cutscenes. First hours are genuinely great, the story is interesting and shooting is good enough. But once that sniper mission happened, game went downhill, level designers goes completely nuts. First that TERRIBLE underwater levels with godawful controls, then spaceport mission with HUGE open spaces and confusing layout, it's just impossible to navigate here without a guide. Lately, you'll think "where the hell I should go next?!" every 5 minutes, all levels in second half of the game are gigantic and confusing, last part before the ending is literally a goddamn maze. There also significant difficulty spike in the late hours, when every enemy suddenly receives grenade launchers that kills you after one shoot even with full health and armor. Game turning to the incredibly frustrating mess, and it's a damn shame because the first half was a very decent FPS, but last hours ruined everything.

15. Grim Legends: The Forsaken Bride - 6 hours
My first modern HOG and I actually surprised by the amount of gameplay and story in this game. Genre is sure advanced a lot since last time I've played that kind of games, this one has a lot of cutscenes and actually interesting story. Also a great variety of puzzles and ability to skip classic hidden-objects episodes in favor to domino puzzles (thought is kinda weird that devs allowing to skip HOG in HOG-game). Overall, game is well made and can be considered as a great entry point for those who interested in HOG genre but never played them. Personally, I'm sure interested in playing more of these in near future.

16. Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek - 5 hours
Welp, this one is more like regular HOGs I've played a long time ago. It's okay but not as good as Grim Legends: The Forsaken Bride, gameplay and puzzles are very simple, and you need to search through same hidden object scenes A LOT, which is a little frustrating. Game starts good enough but falls short in the end and overall story and gameplay are just mediocre, it's okay if you like this genre, but Enigmatis clearly is not good starting point if you want to try to get into HOGs. Personally, I'm not that hyped about HOGs anymore and not willing to immediately jump to next one, like it was after Grim Legends: The Forsaken Bride, maybe I'll play more HOGs from my backlog later but I'll take a little break from this genre for now.

17. SteamWorld Heist - 16 hours
Very good turn-based XCOM-alike strategy game with great artstyle and gameplay. Not perfect though, while there is no "chance to hit" and your accuracy fully depends on how well you aim, devs didn't get rid of random component completely and left procedural level generation. It works mostly okay, but sometimes it can be simply unfair, the same level can be hard at first attempt and ridiculously easy after the second try because of different enemies respawn points. At least boss battles are always the same and you have to plan them carefully. There are some weird difficulty spikes before the first boss, but after that game mostly provides a fair balance between fun and challenge. Also worth mention that game has native touchscreen support and works perfectly on budget windows tablets.

18. TimeShift - 6 hours
Mediocre, but overall solid FPS with "control time" gimmick. Outside time puzzles, gameplay is very typical for this genre, nothing really special and surprising. BUT it's done very well from both visual and technical level, game works on modern systems and supports 4K out of the box, no bugs or glitches either. It also has a good variety in levels and perfect length, game ends right before it becomes frustrating or repetitive. There is some negative moments though, time control energy is too low and not allowing to do anything meaningful in actual combat, and in time puzzles designers simply temporally increasing your energy to finish the puzzle - why the hell devs were so afraid to make this boost permanent, this is Crysis all over again. Also, story is really weak, it had potential but in reality game is just compilation of poorly linked episodes, it became especially obvious after that ending - the main villain, who also had a costume to control time, for some reasons did nothing to stop protagonist from destroying his armies. So much wasted potential, this game could have been much better if developers had more creativity and a better storyline. It's still worth playing at least once, game aged well enough and can be fun if you won't expect much.

19. Half-Life 2: Episode Two - 4.5 hours
10 years later, it's still a great game. But ending game like this and never making next episode is really shitty, I'll never understand why Valve thought that it's acceptable to abandon franchise and fans like this.

20. Halo: Spartan Assault - 5 hours
Eh, even for what it is, I can't say I liked this game much, it's not very engaging and overall forgettable by all accounts. I played it on a windows tablet, and while there is native touch support, controls are clunky, aiming is inconsistent, and throwing grenades while strafing is impossible. At least it's really cheap, but I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone except Halo universe fans.

21. Pacific Liberation Force - 0.5 hours
10 year old trash, that supposes to be arcade helicopter game. Can be finished in like 30 minutes, including tutorial, not worth getting even with -95% discount.

22. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - 4 hours
I've played MW for the 3rd time, and damn, this game aged well, still one of the best CoD campaigns ever. Even though I've played MW Remaster 1.5 years ago when Infinite Crapfare was released, it was interesting to compare original and remastered version, the difference is noticeable, but not always in favor of remastered version. If it's not crappy Activision pricing (game never received more than -50% discount), I would recommend it to anyone who loves singleplayer FPS games without unnecessary crap, just plain and simple fun.

23. Culpa Innata - 14 hours
Despite dated graphics, this game aged well in terms of story and world building. It reminded me Blade Runner, another forgotten adventure game, that was made by Westwood in 90s, but Culpa Innata more focused on "talking" stuff rather than "point'n'click" stuff, which is great. Gameplay is non-linear and depends on how well player interrogates suspects, the wrong choice in dialogue can affect investigation progress greatly. Game is like 80% of well-written, fully voiced dialogues, and 20% of regular point'n'click stuff - and the last part is what holds the game from being perfect. It feels like devs were afraid to go all in for dialogues part and desperately trying to make Culpa Innata more "game-ish", sometimes those pixel hunting puzzles seriously hurt the story. There are only a few examples of such weird design, but one specific example annoyed me greatly - at some point bartender from Stardust club disappeared without a trace, and I had no idea why this happened. I searched the whole club, found nothing and gave up and looked in the walkthrough, only to find out that in this moment curtain on club scene should be opened - but it wasn't opened in my case! After reading carefully through the whole walkthrough, I figured out that I didn't notice small list with the wax recipe, and that's why curtain didn't open and I couldn't progress further, which is ridiculous and ruined immersion. All that stuff about butterflies and renovators also felt out of place, and a lot of questions related to that part of the story left unanswered. But, outside those isolated examples, this game still worth playing it just for the story, just force yourself through the first hour and it'll hook you in once all that investigation talk starts to happen

24. Zombie Shooter - 1.5 hours
What a piece of trash. Short, boring, lazy ass reskin of original Alien Shooter, the only thing they've added is additional bugs and glitches. Avoid.

25. Rise of the Tomb Raider - Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch DLC - 2 hours
Can't say it was bad, but overall pretty mediocre DLC. Predictable story, a new puzzle with ropes that more frustrating than interesting, and the final boss was kinda meh. Forgettable DLC that can be easily skipped if you didn't like the original game much, but might be worth trying for fans.

26. Empress Of The Deep 2: Song Of The Blue Whale - 2 hours
Nice but short HOG, nothing special but nothing bad either. It works only in 1024x768 resolution though, it's pretty old game after all.

27. Bus Driver - 6 hours
I was prepared to see another poorly aged low-tier trash, but unexpectedly Bus Driver turned out as best bus simulator I've ever played. Gameplay rules are simple but addicting, sound design is very satisfying, and it's just great game to relax and drive around. Outside of some minor issues, this game aged well and I absolutely recommend to give it a try, took me 6 hours to complete every route.

28. Avencast: Rise of the Mage - 10 hours
Not perfect, but overall good ARPG with magic-oriented combat and surprisingly challenging puzzles. It feels little dated now (which is fine for 10+ year old game) but plays nice, you can cast spells like in fighting games, by doing combos like "down, up, down" on the keyboard. Story is decent, puzzles require to read notes and think on what you're doing, but the pacing is weird, I was bored few times and almost dropped it halfway, but managed to beat it after all. If you like this genre, I would definitely recommend to take a closer look at this game.

29. Wolfenstein II: The Freedom Chronicles - Episode 1 - 5 hours
Unfortunately, I had to agree that this DLC is just waste of money, even for those who loved The New Colossus. Story in this DLC quickly went to garbage tier with a tremendous amount of plot holes, instead of pre-rendered cutscenes we got crappy comics filler, and they even added technical issues like broken save files (still not fixed after 3 months) and even more problems with Steam overlay integration. What a massive disappointment, I still had some hopes about 2 other episodes, but not much.

30. Portal - 3 hours
I finally played this game again and finished it, took me fewer hours than I expected, I remember back then without hours counter it felt like a much longer game. Anyway, it aged well enough overall and still a very compelling game, puzzles and story are fun. Of course, Portal 2 is obviously superior, but first one still worth playing it nowadays even if you somehow missed it and never played before.

31. Hide and Secret Treasure of the Ages - 0.5 hours
One of the shittiest HOGs I've ever played, it's really fascinating how low-effort and crappy this game is. "Gameplay" here is a just random background with a bunch of trash copypasted all over the screen, it is also nonsensical "story" as well, but it's not connected to HOG part in any way and being told in lazy comic style way. I was going to drop this game without finishing it, but it ended sooner than my patience run out, it took only 30 (!) minutes to reach the ending of this piece of crap. Avoid at all cost

32. Wolfenstein II: The Freedom Chronicles - Episode 2 - 2 hours
Well, the second episode is not as abysmal as the first one, I even liked it. Focusing on stealth mechanics is a nice change, especially because stealth was completely broken in the main game and it was nice to play Wolfenstein, but with the ability to sneak through the whole level without fights. Variety of levels is also nice, and even story is not terrible and doesn't fall apart after the first level, I hope we will see the protagonist of this DLC in Wolfenstein 3 (if it will ever be released of course). My only problem with this DLC is length, it feels way too short, I think it's possible to finish it in 30 minutes if you won't care about looking for collectibles. But with a good discount, I think this episode is worth getting it if you liked main game.

Yay, finally reached characters limit in the first post, here we go with part 2!

-------

33. Wolfenstein II: The Freedom Chronicles - Episode 3 - 3 hours
This episode is little worse than previous one, but it's not terrible. It plays just as the main game, the story is good, and overall it's a good DLC if you enjoyed your time with Wolfenstein II and want more. Problems are the same as for other episodes - it's relatively short and doesn't add anything really new to the original formula. The episodic idea is not bad, but it suffered because of low budget, whole The Freedom Chronicles feels really cheap and unnecessary. You can easily skip whole season pass, but for good price, it may be worth giving it a shot. Just ignore the first episode, and you'll be fine.

34. Men of Valor - 9 hours
Surprisingly hardcore FPS, especially comparing with modern games of this genre, on normal difficulty protagonist is weak and dying after few shots, and game saving your progress only on level load - and levels can be big and filled with thousands of traps and enemies, forcing you to be as careful as possible. I don't like hard games much, but in case of Men of Valor, it works and creating unique for genre atmosphere where you not feeling like a superhero and desperately trying to survive in the extremely hostile environment. This game shows like no other that Vietnam war was hell, I was never really interested in this topic, but Men of Valor stimulated my interest for this part of history, too bad wikipedia page on my languages are crap and not very informative. This game is not for everyone, but if you don't mind a challenge and lots of sudden, sometimes unfair deaths, then it's worth giving it a try for an amazing atmosphere.

35. Rise of the Tomb Raider - Cold Darkness Awakened DLC - 3 hours
Eh, really shitty DLC with incredibly frustrating gameplay. New enemies feel out of place (zombies in Tomb Raider, really?) and they keep endlessly respawning, probably to distract and keep player annoyed every 5 minutes. Map is small and boring, puzzles serve no real purpose and story is non-existent. Seriously, what's the point of all this, only to fill season pass? If that so, then as much as I love the main game, but the season pass is simply not worth it, maybe Blood Ties can be considered as okay DLC, but everything else is just bloated garbage.

36. Luxor 3 - 7 hours
Great casual game, basically Zuma clone in Ancient Egypt decorations, but I love this game more than original Zuma. Everything in it made really well, from level design to sounds and music, devs have all the rights to have "Premium Casual Games" slogan. It's good to see so good casual game from 2007 after playing a bunch of shitty HOGs from the same year, really shows that it's not the age problem, it all depends on how much effort devs are willing to put in their games. Luxor 3 still plays great even 10 years after release, I enjoyed it a lot.

37. Season Match - 2 hours
Very basic match-3 game with balance issues on some specific stages, not terrible but not good either. Good thing it's possible to finish it in one go while waiting for trading cards drop, there is also the last achievement for arcade mode completion but I just can't play this game for another 2-3 hours, gameplay lack of depth and overall this game is meh, even for casual genre.

38. Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey - 4 hours
Playable, but still really bad kids platform game. Have securom DRM on it, and that's why I couldn't even run it first - managed to fix it by switching game language on English and only then DRM window with serial key request appeared. And Steam for some reason didn't track my playtime properly, so I can't write a review on it because I didn't play enough. Very basic even for kids game, there is campaign and story, but once you've done there is nothing else to do, even though game allows you to revisit each princess world. Some scenes are creepy as fuck, even ending ripped straight from "The Shining" movie, like what the hell.

39. Chromadrome 2 - 7 hours
Decent runner game, but it could have been better if not that psychedelic graphics, this game epilepsy nightmare. All those flashing lights and effects can give you a headache even if you don't have problems with your health, I'm not sure what the hell devs were thinking. But other than graphics, game is good, have around 100 arcade levels and several other modes, it might worth giving it a try if you're into runner genre.

40. Elven Legacy - 5 hours
Standalone DLC for Fantasy Wars, a strategy game that basically Fantasy General clone. Really hard and challenging, but fun game if you're into the genre.

41. RIP 3: The Last Hero - 2 hours
Last game in trilogy pack and that's the case when too many features is not a good thing. First RIP was very primitive and boring game, basically, Crimsonland meets Beach Head - you control a turret and shoot everything that moves. RIP 2 surprisingly improved original formula, it had more variety and overall better balanced. But in RIP 3 devs stepped over the line and most of the new changes made gameplay worse. New types of enemies are frustrating and not fun, like an instakill ghost with random movement patterns or railgun tanks that shoots in player immediately after appearing on the screen so it's impossible to dodge their first attack. New skill tree is nice, but for some reason, devs streamlined weapons selection, it's not random anymore and you usually forced to pick a new weapon, even if new weapon sucks and you don't want to use it. There is something wrong with balance too, on normal difficulty game become too easy, game gives you tons of powerups and it's possible to just strafe in circles and shoot everywhere to succeed. Enemies spawn is also feels really slow and broken, sometimes there are no enemies on screen for 5 seconds and they usually come from the same direction, so basically kill the first wave - wait five seconds - kill next wave that the same as previous one - repeat 10 times. From the positive side, devs tried to add proper story and some variety in locations, finally, there is not just wastelands and forests, some levels take place in cities and even space. Overall, it's still a good game, but RIP 2 remains best in this franchise, despite cheap look, it may worth trying to play those games if you want to kill time or just try something simple and fun.

42. Agarest: Generations of War - 48 hours
Also know as Waifus Simulator. The concept is brilliant, it's JRPG missed with Visual Novel, you're saving the world while trying to romance girls from your party and marry them, in order to have descendants who will continue fight against evil in next generations. Story starts like your typical anime garbage about destiny and girls with big... eyes, but then you start to get used to characters, also the story is non-linear and choices really matter. But there is one monumental flaw - JRPG part is fucking terrible. I mean holy shit, I never imagined it's possible to make combat and crafting SO repetitive and devastating. If you don't want to spend dozens of hours on grind in order to progress story, then you need to outright break the game and pump up your party stats to 1000 values - and even that would not be enough, if you'll do my mistake and trigger so-called "True Ending", which is even more grind and literal definition of the word "slog". Game would have been MUCH better if all combat and grind were reduced for like 3-4 times, there is no fucking point in all these fights, it's just a goddamn waste of time and it ruins story pacing. BUT, despite absolutely hating JRPG part, I think it was worth it for the story - I love characters, loved their journey, and storywise ending was good. So, if don't mind fighting through terrible combat in order to see a good story and collect some art of your favorite waifus, then I recommend this game. Just learn how to use cheatengine, and you'll be fine, worth it for the plot, so much good plot.

43. Nancy Drew®: Legend of the Crystal Skull - 4 hours
So, this is my entry point into Nancy Drew franchise. Actually, I also tried to play previous Nancy Drew game called The White Wolf of Icicle Creek, but it aged terrible and was a painful experience, so I dropped it very soon and move to next one. And you know, Legend of the Crystal Skull is not that bad, it's a decent old-school adventure game with Myst-like controls, you doing regular detective work and trying to solve Mystery™. Some puzzles require some annoying backtracking, but the story is good, so I would recommend it for everyone who enjoys this kind of games.

44. Platypus II - 1.5 hours
I can't say that original Platypus was something amazing, but it was a decent side-scroller with original clay graphics. But sequel feels like a bad copy of the first game, there is even exactly same volcano level. Somehow gameplay feels worse, music sounds worse, even graphics looks worse. Platypus II is more of the same but at the same time it's worse by all accounts, but at least it's short and easy to finish.

45. Aquaria - 13 hours
Hard, but amazing underwater metroidvania with a unique world and beautiful soundtrack. Don't let you trick with colorful graphics and cute turtles on screenshots, this is a kind of exploration games that explains you bare minimum, and then suddenly throw you at water-pool with sharks and watching with curiosity how you desperately trying to survive. Well, it's the main problem of this game, it doesn't bother to explain to a player way too much, you need to find everything by yourself, and that's what can scare most modern players. Aquaria can be very unforgiving, almost everything in this game wants to kill you and save points are rare, so once you die you need to start all over since last save crystal, which in worst cases can mean 30-60 minutes of lost progress. But still, atmosphere and world in this game is outstanding, love the story and exploration aspect. If you're suffering from topographical disorientation, then, unfortunately, this game is not for you because map sucks hard and there are too many things that you need to always keep in mind. But for everyone else, it worth giving it a try.

46. Sam & Max 201: Ice Station Santa - 3 hours
I'm a huge Sam & Max fan, but for some dumb reason (I trusted a reviewer who said that second season is not very good, now I see that was a huge pile of bullshit) I've played only first and third seasons. First episode proves that Sam & Max series is one of the best comedy games ever made, excited to play the rest episodes.

47. Sam & Max 202: Moai Better Blues - 2 hours
Eh, maybe I was jumping to conclusions when I reviewed previous episode from this season. I didn't expect to see such massive drop in quality, everything in this episode is just bad. Puzzles, story, new characters, even humor and music, two things that didn't fail in previous episodes, is just meh at best. A massive disappointment by all accounts, I hope rest of episodes are better than this disaster.

48. Sam & Max 203: Night of the Raving Dead - 2 hours
Thank goodness, this episode is miles better than previous one. Very satisfying and fun story, with some nice plot twists, also new characters and jokes are great. Best episode from the second season so far, I hope Telltale would keep it up and last 2 episodes would be as good as this one.

49. Conflict: Denied Ops - 4 hours
Damn, this game is pure garbage, so many idiotic design problems. First of all, you never EVER make checkpoint system in the game when your character can die after few shots. Also, making FPS with terrible movement and shooting is a bad idea from the start. This game is ugly, clunky, outdated trash without any pros, avoid it like a plague.

50. Sam & Max 204: Chariots of the Dog - 2 hours
That was amazing, easily one of the best Sam & Max episode ever! Great jokes and time traveling puzzles reminded me Day of the Tentacle a lot, Telltale would be hard to top that but I expect to see them finishing the second season on high note.

51. The Wonderful End of the World - 2 hours
Indie Katamary Damacy clone from 2008, nothing really special, but it's good. Rather short though, less than 2 hours to complete all levels and get most of the achievements.

52. XCOM: Enemy Within - 27 hours
Finally did a full playthrough of Enemy Within, played it on my Windows tablet and it was a damn nice to play such a great game during travels. DLC itself is a just improved version of original Enemy Unknown, which I loved already, and with all those new changes great game become even better. I guess I'm ready to go for XCOM2 now, too bad it definitely won't run on my tablet judging by what I've heard about it, hoping for decent performance on my PC.

53. Sam & Max 205: What's New Beelzebub? - 3 hours
That was wild, not as amazing as the previous episode but still great finale. Some nice plot twist and hilarious jokes, though Telltale misstep with puzzles again, pixel hunt and tedious backtracking were not very good in second half of this episode. Overall, the whole second season was very good outside episode 2, I definitely recommend to play it (and first season too if you still for some reasons didn't play it yet) to everyone who enjoys good comedy stories.

54. Watch_Dogs 2 - 40 hours
Okay, controversy time. Despite putting 40 hours in this game and finishing all main and side missions... I don't like Watch_Dogs 2. Like, at all - it's indeed beautiful looking, but inside bland and boring game. It's not about change in tone comparing it to original Watch_Dogs, this game has much bigger, fundamental problems that I just can't stand. Story and characters are a mess, it feels like the game is missing the first 1-2 hours, and the whole plot is just dumb nonsense. There are so many storylines that abruptly end with nothing, like Wrench girlfriend (?), congressman Truss and other characters that were shown only once during the whole story and forgotten once the mission ends. Another very big problem is sub-par missions design, 90% of quests work on the same "drive to the checkpoint, hack something, kill dudes with guns" pattern, sometimes it's JUST driving to the checkpoint and talk to NPC with literally nothing else. There are some memorable moments in the story, like a car with racist AI, but it's a rare exception in the line of boring, repetitive missions. Even characters themselves don't care about the story, at some point (and for some dumb reason) one of the main characters dies, but once the cutscene ends, Marcus and other gang members start to casually chat like nothing happened. And it's not the just main story, for some reasons Ubisoft butchered all awesome side activities from previous WD, like drinking game and augmented reality stuff, and the only thing that is left are boring races and taxi driving missions. Not just that, there is no point in doing those side activities, because balance in this game is completely broken and I had a shitload of money with nothing to spend on, most of the skills are useless as well and I got everything that I need in first 5-10 hours.
Another fundamental problem is how boring and not fun gameplay in this game. The protagonist is very weak and dies in a heartbeat, shooting is not fun, so if you decide to go aggressive way then game becomes a very boring cover-based shooter. Yes, this is not the main focus of this game, but the "hacking" part is not very deep or interesting either, there are not enough options for a stealthy approach and hacking puzzle minigame is overused and just tedious to play. They should've just gotten rid of the shooting part completely and fully focus on hacking, an aggressive path doesn't make sense in the story anyway, but instead of an interesting stealth game, we have not very impressive mix, where both parts lack depth and don't work well together.
To be fair, this game is not a complete disaster. It has some positive moments too, for example devs fixed car physics so now it's fun to just drive around, which is a very nice improvement after that terrible driving in WD1. Also, the city of Watch_Dogs 2 is an impressive achievement, despite the lack of meaningful activities, it's just fun to drive around and explore the world. Graphics are not perfect, but still great and can render some breathtaking vistas, it's also nicely scalable and can offer a decent trade-off between visuals and performance.
But the problem is, once I tried to remember what exactly I liked in Watch_Dogs 2, I realized that most of the time I had fun with this game when I was just driving around and taking screenshots, not when I was actually playing the game. And since graphics are somewhere at the bottom of the list of things I value in games, I simply can't recommend it to anyone. It's not terrible, it's just very disappointing, this game has so much wasted potential and half-baked ideas, like gang wars and world interactivity.

55. Overclocked: A History of Violence - 6 hours
Another game that was looking interesting at first glance but turned out to be a clunky mess. The idea and premise are great, you're playing as psychiatrist who needs to talk with 5 patients who were found went crazy in different parts of New York under similar circumstances. Soon after your investigation starts, it becomes obvious that all those people went from the same place, and you discovering truth piece by piece in reverse order, from the moment they've escaped and to the day when all starts. To add more drama, the protagonist also has some uncontrollable rage issues and problems with his wife who live in different town and want to divorce.
This could have been a great noir-style thriller, but unfortunately, design flaws and numerous plot holes ruined whole experience to me. This game is such a mixed bag, it did some things right, like showing points of interest by pressing spacebar or almost instant loads between locations - but at the same time there's no journal or at least task list, and sometimes it's really hard to understand what exactly game wants from you. The main part of Overclocked gameplay is an interrogation of patients by playing audio clips from your talks with other patients, but the problem is the whole process is very linear and you always need to remember who was interrogated already and which audiolog, from specific cell, date and part of the day you need to play - and you'll have dozens of those clips just after the first day of investigation, hence all 5 days. With lack of hints, it's getting really frustrating to come back to the game and try to remember where exactly you stopped during your previous session, especially if you haven't played it for few days. Unless you'll use a walkthrough, Overclocked quickly turns to the boring guessing game.
It's not just that, there's plenty of weird design choices outside interrogations. Overclocked has a very weird logic, at the first day protagonist said he needs to call detective, but refuses to do it in the hospital because he wanted "privacy". So, I went to the last point where he was fine with making private calls - to his room in the hotel. But when I called detective, he didn't respond and I stuck, having no idea what I should do next. Turned out I should have called him not from my room, but at the hospital entrance - which is dumb because there was a guard nearby - and only then detective suddenly decided to answer on my calls. Also, protagonist LOVES to refuse to sleep at the end of the day, motivating this simply because "Not yet".
A good story could have saved this game even despite all problems and design flaws, but it has some major problems as well. My main gripe is about the whole personal drama that happens in the life of the protagonist, he looks and acts perfectly sane most of the time, but everyone around always yelling at him and proposing medical treatment, which obviously driving him nuts. When a drunk guy suddenly put the gun to his head, it's perfectly fine, but once protagonist disarmed him and aimed gun at that guy, everyone starts to yell at him and say that "he losing it". Characters (including the protagonist) sometimes doing really dumb shit for no reason, I mean what will you do when your bank account suddenly become frozen and you won't have a cash to pay for your room in the hotel? Of course, you would act like any sane person - you'll come to work like nothing happened and ignore the issue for few days... Wait, what? Seriously? Maybe that's how devs tried to show that protagonist is really "losing it", but it's not insanity, it's just lack of brains!
Well, to be fair there are some nice plot twists - but that's not enough to make a competent story. Once you starting to put all pieces of the puzzle together, the whole plot is falling apart. Overclocked didn't bother to explain a lot of important parts of the story, for example, why all patients went crazy after escape from the facility and forgot everything - during the first day of the investigation it was clear that all patients escaped in pretty much sane condition. Well, apparently evil dudes somehow found them, brainwashed them, and for some reasons let them out - and by doing that, they've brought attention to their work, which was supposed to be secret. Whatever...
After all, Overclocked is not COMPLETELY terrible. If you're hardcore adventure games fan, then I can see you having some fun with it, but everyone else? Nah, just forget about it

56. Quantum Break - 28 hours
Well, I didn't expect to say this, but Quantum Break is... A great game? After all this criticism on the old forum and in reviews, I was expecting something atrocious, but I did 2 full walkthrough and... It's fine? I mean seriously, why exactly this game initially got so much hate? Because of TV stuff? I can't say it was somewhat explicitly bad either, yeah side-characters were not as good as the main cast, but it didn't bother me much. I think the gameplay is pretty solid, it may seem a little boring at the beginning when you don't have any powers, but it becomes really fun and good looking later with all those crazy time stutters effects. The story overall is very good and have great moments, but it requires read all the notes and don't skip TV show episodes, which was fine by me since I 100%'d this game.
Though there are a few problems I want to address. Worst and most annoying misstep that Remedy did in this game is terrible checkpoints placement. How many times it was discussed already that placing save points BEFORE cutscenes or even scripted sequence (like with that old canon on Monarch island) is never a good idea, I'm not sure what were devs thinking. Another major problem is their engine - the way it works and how much it requires system resources is ridiculous, I mean yeah game can render breathtaking scenes and looks good in combat, but it requires a lot tweaking if you to get stable performance and not blurry image quality. I think there is like 10 different blur filters that impossible to completely disable, which bothered me a lot because I love sharp and clear render. But if you're not as picky as me and not trying to target something crazy like 4K/60, then I guess engine won't be much problem, game looks good enough even with motion blur.
So, my final thoughts - I enjoyed Quantum Break a lot despite some issues it clearly has. I can't say it's a perfect game, but if you love story-heavy singleplayer games as much as I do, then you probably should give it a chance.

57. The Club - 3 hours
Short, simple "arcade" TPS where you need to kill fast and always run forward to keep combo meter high and get better score than your opponents. Good idea, but it's clearly a game that was designed for gamepads, there's no aim assits at all if you're playing with KBM+Mouse, and you know it's kinda hard to aim when timer is running out and you can't stop even for a second. It's a good concept, but I can't say this game is worth it, yeah fun to play but there's not much singleplayer content and online is pretty much dead thanks to GFWL.

58. Assassin's Creed™: Director's Cut Edition - 12 hours
Surprisingly, this game is much better than I remember it. Back then I really hated it because of its repetitive nature and overall clunkiness, but now I finished it and even liked after all (ending are still abrupt trash though). Yeah, it still feels like a prototype for a real game, but at least villains and the actual storyline was infinitely better and memorable than everything that came after it.

59. Sherlock Holmes - Nemesis - 7 hours
Started as a good adventure game, but it went downhill after museum level, too many bullshit puzzles and the story becomes really dumb in a bad way. I'm not sure what devs were thinking with this one, at some point Holmes need to closely inspect food leftovers in the trash bin with a magnifying glass, and this is as disgusting as it sounds. Very frustrating and disappointing experience.

2: The Banner Saga (1/3/18, 10 hrs)

A really enjoyable strategy title, I enjoyed the mechanics of the gameplay, but I had some little niggles about things like classes, or some units feeling really weak in comparison to others. This might just be because it's the first of a series, rather than a standalone game, but, I'd have loved to see some more character development for characters outside the handful that actually got to appear more than twice. There were times I lost people and I didn't even really feel anything about it, because the character had maybe had 2 interactions with everyone. Enjoyed my 10 hours, but not rushing out to get the next installment.

COMPLETED

1. The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy (PS2) - January 2 - Rating: 7.5/10 - This is a genuinely great Cartoon Network licensed game. It's a 3D arena fighter that pays so much respect to the show and there is so much effort put into this. A little light on content, but would be the perfect party/sleepover game when I was a kid.

2. Cartoon Network Racing (PS2) - January 3 - Rating: 6.5/10 - Certainly not the best kart racer and isn't better than any Mario Kart entries, but it's solid for what it is. Does a lot of really fun things and is a million times better than the kart racer on the GBA.

3. Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4) - January 3 - Rating: 9.5/10 - Wow. What a fucking game. The gameplay experience is so pure, fluid and enjoyable. I can comfortably say this is my 2017 GOTY.

4. Crash Bandicoot (PS4) - January 8 - Rating: 4/10 - Good lord this game is fucking bad. How did people ever enjoy this? There are so many things wrong with this game that I honestly can't fit them all here.

5. Crash Bandicoot 2 (PS4) - January 11 - Rating: 6/10 - Sooooooo much better than the first Crash game. Still not as good as I'd like, but there are some really enjoyable parts.

6. Crash Bandicoot: Warped (PS4) - January 12 - Rating: 9.5/10 - Oh my god. How is it possible for this game to be this amazing compared to the first two? Naughty Dog perfected the format here and there's almost nothing I have to complain about. Brilliant game.

7. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory (PS4) - February 11 - Rating: 6/10 - So much absolute boring padding and filler in this game.

8. Knack 2 (PS4) - February 22 - Rating: 8/10 - This was actually really fun! I thought the first game was just okay, but they really tightened up the combat here and I was surprised how much more platforming this had. In my top 3 favourite games from 2017.

9. Ghost Recon: Wildlands (PS4) - March 11 - Rating: 8/10 - Gameplay is sooooooo satisfying here.

10. The Last Guardian (PS4) - March 28 - Rating: 8.5/10 - Some frustrating moments, particularly the final portion of the game and I think it's a bit too long for what it is, however it was such a special journey and I've never felt a connection with a video game character the way I felt with Trico.

11. LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens (PS4) - May 1 - Rating: 8/10 - A Fine LEGO game. There are a couple of slight negatives, like the cover shooting sections that are dreadful, but overall a fun and fast-paced romp.

12. The Order: 1886 (PS4) - May 31 - Rating: 8/10 - Enjoyed this a lot more than most people seemed to. Really enjoyed the shooting mechanics, the game is fucking stunning to look at and I really dug the story and world building. Unfortunately, some clunky controls when it comes to movement, an annoyingly long end-game stealth section and out of nowhere difficult spike prevents it from being a truly great PS4 exclusive.

13. Ratchet & Clank (PS4) - June 18 - Rating: 9/10 - Gameplay is basically perfect here. My only problems with this reimagining are that the story is way weaker than the original and the added Clank sections are a chore to play through.

14. Super Bomberman R (PS4) - June 25 - Rating: 8/10 - Ever since I played Bomberman 64 I've been searching for a sequel that comes close to catching that magic. This isn't quite as good, but it comes very close and offers quite a lot of content for a Bomberman game.

15. Shadow of the Colossus (PS4) - July 2 - Rating: 8/10 - Great game that could have been truly incredible if the horse riding wasn't awful, the camera wasn't so janky and the final colossus wasn't a tedious, frustrating, unenjoyable spectacle.

16. Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion (PS4) - July 16 - Rating: 6/10 - A fun turn-based RPG that is easily accessible, however, it's very rough around the edges.

17. Mario Kart 8 (NS) - July 31 - Rating: 9/10 - Much like all the other Mario Kart games this is serious fun. Not a fan of the smart steering and the fact that it's turned on by default EVERY time you play, but outside of that it's a blast. Love the tracks, love the great variety of characters and kart customisation. I can see myself playing this for a very long time and am glad this was my first Switch purchase.

18. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (PS4) - August 7 - Rating: 9/10 - Absolutely brilliant. Is a much more polished and well-rounded, very loose sequel to the original Ni no Kuni. Before release, I thought the removal of Familiars and the kingdom building/RTS mechanics would severely hamper my enjoyment, but to my surprise I LOVED them. This game is such a joy to play and my only negative comments are with a few things to do with the story.

19. Super Mario Odyssey (NS) - August 20 - Rating: 9.5/10 - Such a pleasurable gameplay experience. This is easily my favourite Mario game of all time.

20. God of War (PS4) - October 7 - Rating: 10/10 - Easily my Game of the Year so far. The game is extremely close to perfect, except for one section on a boat in Helheim.

21. WWE 2K19 (PS4) - October 16 - Rating: 8/10 - Wow, MyCareer is actually really fun here. Going to start digging into Universe Mode soon.

22. NBA Playgrounds 2 (PS4) - October 19 - Rating 6/10 - This is really just more of the same from last year's entry, except the main single player mode is much worse and I already had my fill from the last instalment.

23. Kirby Star Allies (NS) - November 2 - 7.5/10 - Such a wholesome game. Not a whole lot wrong with it, but not quite at a level that can be considered great.

24. Detroit: Become Human (PS4) - November 24 - 9/10 - Superb game. People like to shit on Quantic Dream and David Cage because it's super woke, but honestly, fuck those people. This game is a blast and I was on the edge of my seat for the finale. Not sure if I like it better than Heavy Rain, but it's definitely a contender.

25. Guacamelee! 2 (PS4) - December 4 - 8.5/10 - God this game deserved way more praise and discussion than it actually received. I think It's currently sitting as my second-favouring game of the year so far, and at worst by the time I play everything I want to, it's probably going to be top five. There are some frustrating moments, but fuck, the gameplay is so satisfying. It's the only time I've ever enjoyed a Metroidvania.

26. LEGO The Incredibles (PS4) - December 10 - 7/10 - Yet another solid LEGO game. I was initially a little turned off by the open world elements, but they make for really great post-game content.

I'm game for this.

COMPLETED
1.
Mom Took My Game! (Switch) - Beaten: 02/01/18 - Time Taken: ~45mins (100%)

A really stupid variation on old 'escape the room' Flash games. None of the solutions are particularly tough (me and my partner only got stuck on one requiring you to shake the controller as we didn't realise motion was tracked), but many scenes are laugh-out-loud funny. Warioware style visual humour throughout with a ridiculous, repeating soundtrack that puts me in mind of Zookeeper on the DS.

2. Kid Niki (GB) - Beaten: 03/01/18 - Time Taken: 3-4 hours (All Achievements [RA])

One of my best gaming purchases of the last few years was a Shield TV box. Retroarch works a charm after some tinkering, and the semi-recent support for RetroAchievements.com has made revisiting and discovering older games a real joy. Kid Niki is an early GB platform game which is largely unremarkable - feels a bit like Super Mario Land with chunkier sprites. A full run takes about 25 minutes, but the final world is pretty brutal and had me haemorrhaging lives and continues run after run. All finished now though. No save states used!

3. World of Nubla (PS4) - Beaten: 11/01/18 - Time Taken: ~90mins (All Trophies [PSN])

A student made art game, all about art. Or at least the art housed in Spain's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. I picked this up mainly as it had a weird physical release on Spain via the Playstation Talents label, and I'm a sucker for physical releases. It's not great. Unsatisfying movement and unnecessarily complicated controls for a game that only ever really asks you to walk left or right and pick objects up. Puzzles are simple, but collectibles are either placed in plain sight, or missable if you're not leaping into totally unsignposted areas. The whole thing looks quite nice, but it wasn't really worth the two run-throughs it took to grab all the doodads I missed first time round.

4. I Am Mayo (PS4 + Vita) - Beaten: 11/01/18 - Time Taken: ~60mins (All Trophies x2 [PSN])

A bit of background. As alluded to in number 3 I like buying physical games. I picked up Alienation's niche Chinese / English release and wrongly assumed EU DLC would work (as this has been the case for other Asian English titles). After getting a refund from Sony I was left with £2.49 of credit for the PS Store. For a quid you get both the PS4 and Vita versions of the dumb clicker I Am Mayo. All of this coincided with AGDQ, something I love to watch as I play mindless games. I Am Mayo is a mindless game. There's a bit of humour to it, and the narrative threads that are unpicked as you click are actually quite sweet. Still, not particularly proud with this double Platinum haul.

5. Mecho Tales (Switch) - Beaten: 13/01/18 - Time Taken: 2-3 hours (100%)

This is a tough one. I take no pleasure in being negative about small team productions, but this really wasn't great. The 'hook', that's it's essentially a twin stick platformer just doesn't work. Jumping mapped to a trigger feels awful, and the shooting pod that follows you has its own movement and inertia so you need to over compensate with your directional inputs on the right stick. Level design is universally terrible. Bland and insipid, it does the enemy and player art (which is actually quite decent Steampunk-meets-Rayman style) no favours. Stages are made up of 3 or 4 square blocks, repeated to make platforms. It feels like Klik 'n' Play drag and drop design. Bosses are all RNG dependent and take approximately 30,000 hits to down. To make matters worse they give no feedback as to how you're progressing until a few shots before death. There are a slew of weapons to unlock but every one is a total waste of time outside of the bounce shot which lets you shoot around corners - invaluable as all enemies rush you like they're on a suicide mission when you get too close. Not a great deal of fun.

6. The Bouncer (PS2) - Beaten: 17/01/18 - Time Taken: 7-8 hours (100%)

This was the first game I picked up for my PS2 after receiving it for Christmas. Child-me was so into the idea of a cinematic Streets of Rage, yet I just didn't click with it at all. Controls use the weird pressure sensitive face buttons of the PS2 which I could never master as a kid, and the weighting of the exposition / cutscenes to actual gameplay (maybe 80/20) just didn't do it for me when all I wanted to was punch dudes in 3D space. Fast forward 17 years, and whilst still a pretty frustrating experience, a single play through was decent enough fun and for some reason encouraged me to play through a further 4 times to see each ending and max the stats of each character. No surprise that the title isn't fondly remembered by Square Enix fans, but, y'know, it is what it is.

7. Tony Hawk's American Sk8land (DS) - Beaten: 02/02/18 - Time Taken: 5 hours (Career Mode 100%)

What's most impressive about this handheld spin-off of American Wasteland (the last truly decent THPS game?) is how faithful it feels to the home console titles. I was immediately at home with the control setup, with the touchscreen additions a nice help for the more cramped configuration of the DS's mapping. Beating the campaign to see the credits wasn't hard, and I don't anticipate the classic '2 minute run' mode being that difficult either. It's been great fun to play in 20 minute chunks before bed though, and I'd be quite keen to pick up some of the later DS iterations if I see them cheap in the future. Not a patch on the high watermarks of THPS3 (for purity) + 4 (for open world without the Jackass bloat of later titles), but a million miles above the absolute trash that was THPS5 and other Robomodo developed titles.

8. Road Rash (MD) - Beaten: 08/02/18 - Time Taken: ~20 hours (All Achievements [RA])

Bloody hell. I seriously doubt that there is anyone on this earth that has played Road Rash more this calendar year than me. Spurred on by an achievement set on RetroAchievements, I was determined to 'beat' this title. Thankfully, the final achievement only required you to reach level 5 rather than actually win every race or I might have smashed up my TV. There is so much to love about this game, yet it can be an utterly infuriating experience. I'm a big fan of the reactive crashes, where your bike can bounce off arriving traffic or a huge spill can be cut short slamming into a tree. I really dig the idea of the progression system which extends familiar tracks with each stage, making races feel familiar yet gradually more challenging. The soundtrack and aesthetic of the game is up there with the best MD titles. The combat is weighty, and the driving physics feel heavy and appear to have more depth than an average faux-3D title of the era.

HOWEVER, the later tracks, in all their 8/9 minute glory are just too brutal. You can easily lead the race for 6 minutes, carefully tapping the brake as you traverse every corner, then get totally undone by a surprise corner that appears after an apex in the road which sees you crash and then get overtaken by 6 bikes, or worse, busted, failing immediately. The game isn't helped either by its framerate (perhaps an average of 10-15fps?) which is forgivable in the first couple stages, but of true detriment to control when riding faster bikes due to swallowed inputs and reduced time to react making every corner an active battle with the controller.

9. Wendy: Every Witch Way (GBC) - Beaten: 09/02/18 - Time Taken: ~60mins (100%)

Towards the end of last year I began obsessively listening to the HG101 podcast where the hosts attempt to rank every game ever made. It's an honestly great listen, and I love hearing about titles, good or bad, that had otherwise passed me by. I'd heard of Every Witch Way before, but always assumed it was just a dull licensed platformer. I sat up and took notice when the podcast informed me that a) it was made by Way Forward, and b) it uses a gravity flip mechanic like VVVVVV. While certainly not on the level of Terry Cavanagh's opus, it was really enjoyable. It's a slight game for sure, but the core mechanic, excellent sprite work, and GBA exclusive levels make it stand out on a platform already filled with licensed platform action games.

10. Orphen: Scion of Sorcery (PS2) - Beaten: 11/02/18 - Time Taken: ~12 hours (100%)

A launch title for the PS2 that feels every bit the product of inter-generation development. It's ostensibly an RPG yet features none of the hallmarks of the genre. There is no character progression or stats. Items collected from treasure chests cannot be used in battle and are entirely surplus to what's required to beat the game. You can equip weapons and spells that are earned through boss encounters, yet every fight in the game can be beaten comfortably using the abilities you start the game with. Battles are separate to navigation of the world, but play out as set pieces (there are a finite amount of scripted battles rather than random attacks) with weird dynamic, swooping camera angles and strange almost rhythm-based attacks. Character movement in the overworld / dungeons is incredibly clunky with the right stick doing nothing, and L1 / R1 being used to manipulate the camera.

Yet despite all its esoteric design choices, its actually reasonably engaging. The story is taken form a manga / anime I believe, but its all self contained within the game and doesn't require any prior knowledge. Voice acting is tripe, although does feature a number of voice artists who would go on to work on bigger and better properties. I don't regret playing it through, though can't readily recommend it unless you're particularly interested in seeing a developer try to present a variation on genre staples which were then shunned and ignored by every game made before and since.

11. Atomic Runner (MD) - Beaten: 12/02/18 - Time Taken: ~3 hours (Credits)

I used to borrow this game from my brother's friend's stepdad growing up. I never even beat the first stage. It's a souped up conversion of a pretty hard arcade title. It took many runs to actually get through this, and I had to play on Easy, with the continue setting pretty much maxed out, but it still felt like an achievement to see each stage and beat the final boss. The game's difficulty comes mainly from the fact that every stage is a auto-scroller meaning that placement is key to avoid enemies and projectiles. Your character sprite is tiny which is both a blessing and a curse when trying to navigate tricky hazard layouts. The game utilises a kind of adaptive difficulty (at least on easy mode) where if you lose a lot of lives on the same area, it starts giving your power-ups and better weapons more readily. A really nice feature for a game this old. Art and sound direction are great, definitely worth a play.

12. Jill of the Jungle (DOS) - Beaten: 12/02/18 - Time Taken: ~60mins (Credits)

My family was late to the PC party, so I never experienced much DOS gaming other than at a friend's house whose father was a network manager. I have fond memories of playing Jazz Jackrabbit and Command & Conquer, but I never played, nor had heard of Jill until this morning when I started looking for DOS exclusives that would be worth trying to get running on my Shield TV through DOSBox. Genuinely loved this one, from the humour in the messages detailing other popular video game characters of the time 'retiring' due to how impressed they were with Jill and her adventures, the ripping soundtrack, and the well balanced difficulty of the whole thing. There were two follow-ups made, so I expect I'll give them a blast in the not too distant future.

13. Astro Boy (PS2) - Beaten: 16/02/18 - Time Taken: ~12 hours (100%)

Outside of Mega Drive era Sonic, Nights, Burning Rangers and PSO, Sonic Team have produced a lot of shit haven't they? I picked this game up years ago based on the quality of Treasure's GBA title, wrongly assuming that as Sega were publishing both there might be a common thread of quality that ran through both. Sadly this was not the case.

Flying (something quite important for an Astro Boy game) is coupled to an insane control layout. Left analogue is to manoeuvre forwards, backwards, left and right, with the right analogue controlling elevation. Unless of course you're boosting (which is 50% of the game) when the left analogue changes to control your movement up and down rather than forwards and back. The right analogue then controls 'more up' and 'more down'. This in itself is a ridiculous choice and makes swathes of the game more difficult than it should be. Locking onto enemies and targets is vitally important, yet you have no control over *what* you lock on to in busy areas. The lock-on button is also the only way to quickly centre the camera which otherwise constantly assumes you want to look at Astro's face rather than the surroundings or enemies.

Sonic Team lift the worst elements of Sonic Adventure that they'd later reuse in Sonic '06 (the dire fetch quests that pop up between action stages) to pad an otherwise pretty paltry package. Examples of the 'best' side quests: press the X button 100 times; answer 30 (30!!) questions on obscure Astro Boy lore; let a dog NPC bite you. By far the least enjoyable side missions though are the ring races. These obstacle courses would be challenging purely for the game's dreadful controls, but issues are compounded by: janky framerate; the fact that all courses are made up of identical blue rings and all remain present at once meaning that its easy to take a wrong turning as the game gives you no feedback that you're progressing in the right direction; inconsistencies with when your 'chain' is dropped, thus causing you to fail the race.

All in all, a bit of a stinker. That I beat. Because of this stupid thread.

14. Fighting Force 64 (N64) - Beaten: 18/02/18 - Time Taken: ~2 hours (Credits)

Another brawler.

What I found most interesting, was, despite predating The Bouncer by a good 4 years, Square's game still falls foul of so many of the issues found in this earlier attempt at a 3D Streets of Rage style title. Collision detection is iffy, it's too easy to have enemies gang up on you and juggle you infinitely (though this can be allayed by rolling through them in this title at least), and there just isn't enough variation in enemy type or gameplay to keep it interesting for each games' extended length.

What IS different in FF64 though is how much more actual fighting you do when compared to The Bouncer's infinite cutscenes. Fighting Force was reportedly meant to be a direct successor to SoR, and the economy of its story definitely shows clear parallels to Sega's earlier franchise.

The destructible environments are cool, I liked how your score dictated which branching path you could take at several key stages through the game, and the weapons were quite enjoyable to wield for the most part.

Fun enough, but I don't really feel compelled to go back and beat it with the other characters any time soon. Also, pretty much every fight can be cheesed by rolling and then leaping into groups of enemy again and again..

15. Theseus (PSVR) - Beaten: 19/02/18 - Time Taken: ~2 hours (Credits)

A short but thrillingly cinematic third person VR title based around the greek myth of the Minotaur. Looks gorgeous, and proves how well unconventional (read: non-first person) titles can work in VR. Using fixed camera angles like classic Resident Evil, the game utilises the headset mainly to showcase scale and fantastic 3D audio. On finishing the game its alluded that by exploring a bit more you can unlock a different ending so I'm keen to get back in when I have a couple spare hours over the next week or so. I don't think the bits that made me gasp will have quite the same effect second time around though.

Highly recommended - I'm looking forward to seeing what the small Spanish development team cook up next.

16. Auto Modellista (PS2) - Beaten: 27/02/18 - Time Taken: ~7 hours (All cups / races beaten)

Over 15 years after release, and wow, this thing is still a looker. A cel-shaded, Capcom developed street racing game. Slim on tracks and actual single player content, at least in the PAL release (as we lost the online compatibility of the NTSC title), the game is fun enough. Its handling model is odd, encouraging the player to tweak each car's handling on a track by track basis, something which quickly begins to sap the fun from the races themselves. Any changes are done through an overly long interface and menu system, meaning you spend too much time tinkering and then storing alterations, and not enough actually on the track.

Apparently, despite winning gold medals in all tournaments I haven't unlocked all the content available. Guides are actually pretty thin on the ground from the era, but it seems you just continue to race the same stages again and again to be rewarded with extra bits and pieces. Not that crazy about pumping more time into the game, though am tempted to try and pick up the NTSC Xbox version at some stage as the graphics were improved, handling changed completely, and several new tracks and cars added.

17. Letter Quest Remastered (PS4) - Beaten: 28/02/18 - Time Taken: ~13 hours (All Trophies [PSN])

It's just Bookworm Adventures but with different characters. A fun game to play with my partner though, even if she would always deliberately choose a lesser word to play if I spotted a decent scoring opportunity just to spite me and remind me that she was holding the controller.

18. Hex Tunnel (PSVR) - Beaten: 06/03/18 - Time Taken: ~90mins (All Trophies [PSN])

Lots of games get erroneously described as being akin to Jeff Minter's output. Trippy visuals? Techno soundtrack? Arcade sensibilities? Minter rip-off. What's unique about his work though, is the level of refinement and deliberateness in each and every decision present in his games.

Hex Tunnel certainly seems to be trying to ape at least the aesthetics of Minter's work. This VR title has your barrelling down a tunnel, avoiding obstacles using your gaze to direct movement. What's missing though is the level of curation in the techno soundtrack, and the ability to learn the patterns and pathing of obstacles so that avoiding them is about skill and practise rather than pot luck and janky, procedural placement of walls and barriers.

There is no score to be earned in Hex Tunnel, but even as an experience it fails due to its horrendously low resolution, questionable visuals, and just plain dull gameplay. As a introduction to VR on mobile headset I could almost forgive it, but as a title only currently available for premium headsets, it seems rather misguided and a bit too much of a junior effort to recommend.

19. Florence (iOS) - Beaten: 06/03/18 - Time Taken: ~60mins (Credits)

A narrative game about mid-20s routine, malaise and relationships. I won't say too much as I think its a game best experienced first hand. I will say though that some of the mechanics illustrate incredibly complex emotions delicately and effortlessly, and I'm looking forward to the future output of the team behind it.

20. Ys: Book I (PCE) - Beaten: 08/03/18 - Time Taken: ~10 hours (Credits)

An absolute ripper of a game. Just a great action RPG. The bump combat is strange to get used to, but has a surprising amount of depth to it once you understand how positioning and acceleration affect your attack and defence. The game is short, and artificially padded with a bit too much backtracking, ESPECIALLY in the final dungeon which makes up almost half of the game's total length. The presentation is jaw dropping when you consider the era it released in, with a genuinely rousing intro, impressive anime-style character portraits, well delivered speech (though its used a bit too infrequently), and a soundtrack that absolutely slaps.

Having a guide handy meant I didn't get too lost, and signposting is generally pretty clear if you're paying attention to NPC conversation. The game runs straight into Book II on the PCE version I'm playing, but I've counted this as a game beaten for now. Looking forward to making a proper start on its sequel though.

Post covering games #20 onwards

Game 3: Doki Doki Literature Club (PC) (5 Hours) (9/10)

Okay I am so mad I didn't play this last year. This is THE best visual novel of all time, with endearing characters, a great story and one of the greatest twists in all of games.
Never in my life have I played a game that has bored me so much at the start, then ended off so spectacularly. I'm gonna talk about some stuff in the spoiler tag, so if you haven't played, do not look in it. Bravo to Dan Salvato.

The twist of depression and suicide within the deaths of Yuri and Sayori are so wild and unexpected and made the game for me but also deeply affected me in a way I wouldn't have expected, it was so weird being attached to these characters, but characters like Yuri and Sayori were just so, interesting and fun. The end game with Monika reading into my PC and finding my PC's name was so WILD because I was playing with a friend who'd already played and he reacted even though he knew it'd happen (cause my PC's name is my old gamertag I don't use, I forgot about that)

1. BioShock - 16 hours
I've played a lot 10+ year old games, and most of them didn't aged well. This is not the case for BioShock - surprisingly, it's still fun to play. I think i like it even more than during my first playthrough 8-9 years ago. Also, water tech in this game is still damn impressive, and art direction makes this game looks great despite low quality textures in some places. Really amazing game, i admire unique world and atmosphere, it's hard to imagine that something like this would be greenlit in modern market. My only complain about it is that boring and completely unnecessary escort mission near the end, so boring and painful. But other 15 hours were worth it, this is still impressive game in original form, without remaster.

Excellent! Was waiting for this thread as it was one of my favorites when i lurked Gaf. Never got the chance to participate so this is a first for me. Not been finishing many games lately so we'll see how this goes.

MAIN POST 1

Main post 2: https://www.resetera.com/posts/5234679/

1. Adelantado - Book One / 7h20 - completed 02.01.18

header.jpg

First Impressions: As i went through the first mission, i couldn't help but notice that the gameplay revolves around being a Spanish conquistador just plundering away at the riches of the inept natives.

The Thick of It: Adelantado is kind of just plain insensitive and tone deaf. Not so much in the language or the visuals it employs, but mostly in its mechanics. The title is basically a mix of a much simplified town builder and a resource management game. The player incarnates Adelantado, a Spanish envoy, whose main goals are sending all the gold he finds back home, while occupying all the land and decimating all the natural resources, not only with no resistance but even with the help of the current occupiers. Every tribe chief or warrior in the player's path has absolutely no interest in doing anything but serve the white man.
Moving away from the obvious connotations, the game itself is somewhat fun but limited and quite on-rails. Both the art and the music are inoffensive and forgettable, which makes this a good podcast game for me, as i just whittled away at the missions while having the Thumbs in my ears.

Conclusion: Don't regret playing it, but i wish the approach to the setting was different, less gross. It's also the first game in a trilogy and i might get back to the series at a later date since i own it already.

2. House of 1000 Doors: The Palm of Zoroaster / 4h - completed 03.01.18

header.jpg

First Impressions:
This sure looks like a Hidden Object Game.

The Thick of It: This is clearly a HOG so there's not really much to say here. The environmental art is above average for the genre but everything else is as bland as expected. Another podcast game. This will probably be a trend in my list.

Conclusion: Very middle of the road, with nothing to set it apart.

3. Mini Ghost / 4h - completed 08.01.18

header.jpg

First Impressions: Had this on Steam for a while now. Got it because it looked like a cool little Metroidvania. 8bit artstyle and good music. It's a free to play prequel to Ghost 1.0, from the makers of Unepic.

The Thick of It: I suck at hard games. That being said, Mini Ghost is challenging but not in a frustrating way (for the most part). Simple but enjoyable level design and there's a lot of user maps on the Workshop, though i'm probably not gonna try them as i had my fill with the game itself. The visuals and music are straight out of the NES but don't really stand out among similar games.
Enjoyed my time with the game but the last boss kinda soured me a little bit. You're juggling the boss, several enemies, stairs you need to navigate to hit the boss, a lava pit and stunlocking hits. Yeah, it's as fun as it sounds.

Conclusion: A fun game very worth playing. Interested in playing the actual main game at a later date.

4. The Walking Dead Season 1 Ep. 1 - A New Day / 2h - completed 11.01.18

ss_7a2c18f45ed5c6464ae803ae49c32bf3717ae375.600x338.jpg

First Impressions: Finished this game on the PS3 back in the day and hated the technical aspects of it at the time, as i guess any sane person would. It's apparent this doesn't really run a whole lot better on the PC, so that will be fun.

The Thick of It: Still one of the strongest episodes Telltale has ever produced in my opinion. Its pacing is perfect and the character work is flawless. It does a great job at introducing us to the world of TWD and also at making us want more of it. I missed Lee and Clem.

Conclusion: I got a lot of the Telltale catalog on a sale a few months back and had been wondering if i should just skip to season 2 since i had played the first season already, but i'm glad i didn't. Loved TWD back when it came out and judging from my reaction to the first episode i think it will still hold well. I could do without the jank but it's still worth to deal with it.

5. The Walking Dead Season 1 Ep. 2 - Starved for Help / 3h - completed 14.01.18

ss_b698433b560c915812b37b2c8c5ef16b71a777e7.600x338.jpg

A very strong episode, full of interesting choices. Some of these feel like they're not really choices at all due to the need for survival like the last one in the episode. I liked that. The main characters take a bit of a back seat here in relation to plot and the introduction of some interesting themes characteristic of the genre. But what character work there is in there it's very well handled. The stakes and tension kept constantly rising throughout the episode and left us in a very different place from where we were in the start. In conclusion, it's a good thing i don't remember most of what happens in these games as i'm having a blast with them all over again.

6. Doki Doki Literature Club / 3h40 - completed 15.01.18

header.jpg

Had tried it for a bit a few weeks ago but it didn't stick. Decided to give it another shot after all the conversation around it.

Spoiled the following just in case:

I still find the opening hour to not be very captivating. I understand its necessity as it not only makes the gradual tonal shift later on more arresting as it also lays the foundation from which the subsequent Acts can play off. But the fact is that it ends up working wonderfully and as i was unknowingly approaching the end of Act 1 this overwhelming sense of dread came over me. It has been a long time since i've had such a visceral response to a game.

I think this game is a very successful take on interactive horror and storytelling. It's themes are interesting and rarely tackled in games. Whether they are well represented is another question. I found that at times they were somewhat misjudged but was positive on the game as a whole on that regard.

Glad i played it and would advise a playthrough with the caveat that the content warnings are there for good reason.

7. Still Life / 9h - completed 16.01.18

header.jpg

Still Life is an Adventure game from the mid 2000's and it shows. Bad PS2 level CGI, blurry backgrounds and terrible voice acting don't make a very good first impression. I found it to be a pretty good game though. The serial killer story line is nothing to write home about but it kept me interested enough due to jumping back and forth between two timelines that we play through. Although the voice acting is bad, the writing and characters are a little better. It does end in sequel bait though.
The gameplay is very streamlined and the environments sparse in interaction. The puzzles are mostly ok but there are a couple of sliding puzzles which i absolutely despised. And a laser beam puzzle near the end almost made me quit.
Remember all those Se7en clones in the 90's? That's what this feels like in tone.

It's far from being an essential game but i had fun with it and since i own the sequel already, i'll play it eventually.

8. The Walking Dead Season 1 Ep. 3 - Long Road Ahead / 2h30 - completed 16.01.18

ss_044086628ad6b406be3f75d9bbb9656512d5ff18.1920x1080.jpg

Another great episode. Some very strong scenes in here. Particularly liked Lilly's and Clem's moments, in a different context. It's also a very sad one that just hit me in the feels. Again. I'm a big fan of Vanaman's work in this series.
Also like how this episode completely changes the dynamics we were becoming accustomed to, in order to set up the final act.
Not much more to say. Two more episodes to go and then on to 400 Days which i haven't played yet.

9. Tick's Tales / 1h40 - completed 16.01.18

header.jpg

A short PnC Adventure game, with pixel art and some funny moments. It tells the epic tale of Tick and his tribulations to win the heart of Georgia McGorgeous, with the help of Gandarf. It's really silly and a little hit or miss. The puzzles are not overly complicated and have a certain logic to them, which i like. Not much else to say really.

10. The Walking Dead Season 1 Ep. 4 - Around Every Corner / 3h - completed 17.01.18

ss_aa4b8942069c3dc4c1352524c703fefa18145b27.600x338.jpg

The weakest episode so far. It lacks tension, it plods though most of its running time and the characters it chooses to focus on are just transient and not core to the story, making it feel like a filler episode. I do like what they did with Ben's character, although his fate is pretty much sealed at this point. His arc only has one way to end. The ending sets up the final episode perfectly.
This episode was somehow even more janky than usual, with a lot of slowdown every 20 minutes or so. I'm very tolerant of jank but i really hate the act of playing Telltale games at times.

11. The Walking Dead Season 1 Ep 5 - No Time Left / 1h40 - completed 18.01.17

header.jpg

This is one of the strongest endings in any game i've played. Short and to the gut. Not really gonna say anything that hasn't been said in the last 5 years regarding this series but just that the way these characters stay with me is something i wish more games were able to do. Great writing once again. Glad i replayed these.

Gonna give 400 Days a go next and that will be all new to me. Heard it's good.

12. The Walking Dead - 400 Days / 1h30 - completed 18.01.18

ss_5d2f72e453392f36177a9113da12fa86b58c7622.600x338.jpg

An uneven collection of vignettes. I was expecting something meatier so i'm a bit disappointed with 400 Days. I did like Bonnie's segment but that's about it.There's not really enough time in any of the stories for the characters to breathe.

13. Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror - Remastered / 9h - completed 22.01.18

header.jpg

A classic and one of my favorite PnC Adventure games. The animation and background art are great., colorful and evocative. As is the character design. Some of the characters are a bit iffy though, i think this game would probably get a fair bit of criticism nowadays regarding the portrayal of some of them. Stereotyping aside, they are mostly well written. George and Nico are wonderful protagonists. And i do love the writing in this game, especially when it comes to the more comedy driven moments like the film set shenanigans.

On the gameplay side, i have some problems with a couple of instances. The game starts at a brisk pace but completely hits a wall when we get to Quaramonte. I spent a good 2 hours on that part just wishing things moved along. And the jungle bit is just tedious and repetitive. There's no need to make you walk through some 10 screens back and forth several times over to solve a puzzle. That's just bad design.
Apart from those two cases, the game flows flawlessly from scene to scene and most puzzles are very satisfying to figure out, relying more on common sense than lateral thinking, which is always a positive for me.

Broken Sword 2 still remains one of the best and most essential games in the genre and i recommend it to anyone who has an interest in Adventure games but never delved too deep into them. It's very charming and a good entry point.

14. Digital: A Love Story / 2h - completed 23.01.18

full.png

Finally got to play Christina Love's wonderful little gem. The game takes place in a 1988 desktop, where you connect to the internet through a BBS. The story rapidly grows from there and i love the way it all feels so naturalistic while telling a very interesting SF short story. Don't want to go any deeper into it as discovery is a big part of its appeal.

A lot of the interactions with the game really took me back, although i only started using the internet in the early 90's, so i kinda missed that earlier age. The visuals are expectedly simple but effective, and the OST is good, if a little bit limited in variety.

Glad i played it and am definitely gonna look into her other games.

15. Roads of Rome 2 / 7h30 - completed 24.01.18

header.jpg

A simple TM game for podcast time. Terrible character art. Forgettable everything else.

16. Samorost 2 / 1h - completed 25.01.18

header.jpg

A charming, simple, and very short little game, with a lovely art style. A quest to retrieve your dog and get back home again. The character design and atmosphere remind me a lot of some old Yugoslavian cartoons, which were on TV when i was a kid. Not much meat here though. Apparently the third game is more substantial. It's on the list for later.

17. The Room / 2h30 - completed 27.01.18

header.jpg

An atmospheric puzzle game, The Room possesses very tactile interactions with its puzzle boxes, drawing us into its world. It encourages us to experiment and prod at it in order to reveal its mysteries. It's not a hard game though. I liked the somewhat Lovecraftian undertones it has in its conceit, but the story is very light.

I had played it before on my phone but went with the PC version this time around. It loses a bit on the 'feeling' of playing it but it's still enjoyable in every other way. Recommended.

18. Mars: War Logs / 13h40 - completed 28.01.18

header.jpg

Where to start with this game? It has bad writing and voice acting, the characters make no sense most of the time, there's a female character so beyond anything sensible that it just becomes ludicrous, the plot is simple yet nonsensical, the visuals are ugly as fuck, the combat is repetitive and annoying, the level design sucks, quests are ok i guess, and jank. Jank everywhere. And truly the worst offender of them all: an arrow to the knee joke.

And yet, like other Spiders' games, there is a certain earnest charm to it that draws me in. I just put almost 14 hours into it, after all. Can't really recommend it to most people though.

19. The Shivah / 2h - completed 28.01.18

header.jpg

A short game by Dave Gilbert. It left me a bit cold in the end. I liked the story and setting but the characters are underdeveloped, and i didn't really enjoy the more gamey parts. The investigation relies too much on searching random stuff online and the dialogue 'battles', although cool in concept, are not very well executed, in my opinion. Both the music and the voice acting are really good though. And a special mention to the 'rabbinical' dialogues and the jewish jokes.

The game has 3 endings, but since i apparently got the better one, i don't really feel compelled to go for the others.

In the end, this felt more like a proof of concept that doesn't really explore its themes. I'd love for this character and setting to be in another, more meatier game. Still, if you like PnC games and have a couple of hours to spare, you might want to give it a try.

20. The Walking Dead Season 2 Ep. 1 - All That Remains / 2h - completed 28.01.18

ss_dbdd1954a0f51a65beb8e1785d723cb418584ade.1920x1080.jpg

Telltale starts off the second season by getting rid of excess baggage and swiftly introducing us to a new cast of characters. The episode's focus is still on Clementine though. Not the most exciting episode in the series, and i sincerely thought the sewing scene was kinda obnoxious and really drawn out. That scene aside, it's a very low key start to this season, which is not necessarily a bad choice, though i'm hoping for it to ramp up in the next offering.

21. Micron / 1h30 - completed 28.01.18

header.jpg

A solid puzzle game, where you have to guide little balls of light with various colors using a few deflectors, in order for one of them to reach the exit. The mechanics and tools available expand a little bit as the levels go on but the game never really surprises. I like the visual style and there's a satisfying aural cadence to the levels, as every interaction between the balls and everything else has its own distinct sound, meaning that the minimalist soundtrack gets constructed as you solve the levels. It's an interesting detail that adds a lot to the game, in my opinion. All in all, worth playing.

22. Syberia / 10h40 - completed 02.02.18

header.jpg

I love this game so much. The places, the characters, the story. Had played it back in the day, on the PS2 of all things and had fond memories, but this new playthrough made me like Syberia even more. The way Kate's personal life and her new experiences are interwoven into the plot as she grows and finds her true self is marvelous. Not many games manage to tell a story about personal change as well as Syberia does. And the setting. It's a whimsical reimagining of the real world, with a dash of magical realism, always teetering on the brink between reality and fantasy. A world prisoner of its past. The art style is absolutely perfect for the mood set by the game as is the sound design. And the towering architecture contributes to the sense of a world that is larger than life. The dialogue is plentiful, witty and touching at times, and the voice acting is mostly good.

Can't recommend this game enough to someone interested in Adventure games.

23. boxlife / 30m - completed 05.02.18

header.jpg

A very short game, with ability based exploration. The objective is to get out of the box, i guess? There are secrets to be found and maybe you get an actual ending if you find these but i can't really be bothered to look for them. Not really much i can say here.

24. Hunted: The Demon's Forge / 14h50 - completed 07.02.18

header.jpg

Written by Brian Fargo, it's the last big game developed by InXile before turning to Kickstarter. It's either a Gears of War clone with a bow instead of guns, or a very basic and unsatisfying God of War clone, depending on which character you're playing with at the time. Although these descriptions can give you a good idea of what to expect from the broad gameplay aspects, they don't really do the game justice as there's a little bit more to it, at least the more shooty bits. The gameplay is nothing particularly inventive, and Caddoc (the melee fighter) is very boring to play as, which meant i spent almost the entirety of my playthrough as the elf E'Lara. She has several types of bows and abilities at her disposal and i found her to be fun to play with.

I really liked the exploration in this game. Although the critical path is extremely linear, there are a lot of secret areas, extra tombs and quests to be found, which have a few puzzles here and there. But nothing too complicated. The game does take a nosedive in level and encounter design in the last third as the last two chapters mainly consist of arenas and endless waves of meat thrown your way. I found the visuals ugly, a combination of the unappealing art style and the typical Unreal Engine 3 glossy look. There are some cool and impressive vistas to be seen at times though. The plot is standard fantasy, with nothing really very interesting going on, but the banter between the characters has its moments.

In the end, i enjoyed it but don't think i'd ever play it again.

25. Roads of Rome 3 / 9h10 - completed 07.02.18

header.jpg

More TM as podcast fodder. Been catching up on Waypoint Radio for the last couple of weeks. Pretty much the same as the last one.

26. Dead Horizon / 20m - completed 08.02.18

header.jpg

A very short game that nonetheless managed to impress me. It's the story of a gunslinger and a duel. The writing is pretty good and i really love the visual style and music. The drawing mechanic is also pretty cool. Make sure to check the lore book in the start menu as it is worth reading through, in my opinion. I would definitely play a longer, expanded version of what's here.

27. Mega Man / 4h - completed 11.02.18

Mega-Man-NES-1.jpg

Mega Man has always been a series i've been interested in but never really dove into. Played 9 and 10 when they came out but not for long and definitely didn't even come close to finishing them. I finally decided to give it a fair shot and bought the Legacy Collection on Steam and have now beat the first game, which apparently is the hardest. If true that is very good news since this game kicked my ass all over the place. The majority of the game is hard but reasonably fair. That yellow asshole up there and Fireman in Dr. Wily's castle though should burn in hell. The latter especially is just a very badly design boss, where is pretty much impossible to avoid taking damage. I couldn't imagine beating this game with no save states either. It was the greatest feeling beating it anyway though.

Two of the main reasons Mega Man always drew me in were the fantastic art and music and this game, although far from the best in the series, is still really good in those departments. I can hardly think of better looking NES games than the ones in this series, with the exception of Super Mario 3.

Even if further entries build on everything present here and do it better, it's still a lovely game and very much worth playing.

28. A Raven Monologue / 10m - completed 20.02.18

header.jpg

A short story about loss. Not much more to say. It's very short and it tells its story through the piece and through the store page, so check that out as well if you decide to experience A Raven Monologue.

29. Glass Masquerade / 4h30 - completed 21.02.18

header.jpg

A puzzle game where you reconstruct stained glass panes, travelling around the world. Lovely art style and a fun way to spend a couple of hours if you're in the mood for some jigsaw puzzling.

30. Banyu Lintar Angin - Little Storm - / 10m - completed 21.02.18

header.jpg

This is literally a series of illustrations that you click through. Similar to A Raven Monologue, by the same studio. It's not actually a story but moments of a family, kinda like a photo album. I do like the illustrations a lot but there's nothing else here.

31. Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon / 10h - completed 22.02.18

header.jpg

The third game in the series is a huge disappointment that just gets more grating as it plods along.

The lush and beautiful art style from the previous games is gone, leaving us with characterless 3D visuals that completely fail to capture the charm of its predecessors. The empty open levels bring nothing interesting to the table and only serve to waste the time of the player as most of them are just ugly window dressing with nary a bit of interesting stuff to do in them. The character models are terrible, even for the time of release, but at least the dialogue still has its moments, the highlights being George and Nico's banter and George's inane remarks that still manage to crack me up. The more serious story beats though, are handled with no subtlety or sense of tone.

The plot is also not very good and it has one of the lamest twists i have seen recently. The ending is just bad all around. The music and dialogue constantly get cut and i had to reconfigure my controller every single time i restarted the game. It's like the game was actively fighting and tempting me to hate it. Though i wouldn't go that far, it seriously left a bad taste in my mouth.

The puzzles are what killed any goodwill i still had toward this game. After a certain point, i realized that almost every area had a box puzzle. To be fair, i'm not the biggest box puzzle aficionado to start with, so maybe i'm a little bit biased, but making every other puzzle a box puzzle in an Adventure game does not strike me as the wisest move.

All in all, this is probably the worst game i've played this year so far. And i've finished Mars: War Logs.

32. Plug & Play / 10m - completed 23.02.18

header.jpg

A weird experience about connections and relations. Not really sure of what it's trying to say. Love the simple art and the animation.

33. Adelantado - Book Two / 9h20 - completed 25.02.18

header.jpg

More of the same in this second game in the series, although this time around the levels are a little bit more interesting and involved when it comes to exploration. The environmental art is also more defined and appealing than in the first game. Enjoyable.

34. DLC Quest / 2h - completed 28.02.18

header.jpg

An enjoyable little platformer. The writing is funny and on point, there was a couple of times i laughed out loud. The gameplay is solid but nothing too interesting. It's worth playing only because of the DLC gag that permeates every aspect of it, which was enough for me.

35. Loot Box Quest / 3h30 - completed 28.02.18

header.jpg

A fantastic take on the current game industry wrapped on a solid idle clicker. This game's narrative is mostly derived from the upgrade system and its ever growing insanity. This game goes places. Black Mirror places. It all starts when you sit down to play McGuffin Quest 2, only to find out that the titular character has been hidden in a loot box for the sequel. Which means you need to get a job to be able to buy said loot boxes and maybe develop some bots to farm those same loot boxes. That's the beginning and it just gets weirder the further it goes. The constant discovery is most of the experience so i'll just leave it at that.

Made by Going Loud Studios, DLC Quest's developers, it shares some of their first game's DNA but it also possesses a much darker humor this time around. I guess that makes sense given the current landscape. Highly recommended.

36. Adelantado - Book 3 / 10h20 - completed 04.03.18

header.jpg

Although not much really changes from previous entries, it's still the best of the bunch, due to more interesting and varied maps. This series was a decent time waster that served its purpose but i might be done with TM games for a while.

I'll try this year again!

1 - Diablo III (30/01/18) (? hours) (PC/Battle.net) - 8/10

I've played the game on PS3 a few years ago, but now I finally beat it on PC. It's the same old Diablo III that we all know, but it's a lot of fun. I played it as a Necromancer, so it was quite a new experience. I'm playing Reaper of Souls next!

hdNjZo8l.png

2 - Diablo III: Reaper of Souls (04/02/18) (? hours) (PC/Battle.net) - 8/10

Basically the same as the base game, but with a really long new act filled with things to do. I had a really good time playing it, perhaps I'll play the Adventure Mode from time to time to get those legendaries :P

baNNPJgl.jpg

3 - The Sexy Brutale (10/02/18) (~6 hours) (PC/Steam) - 8/10

Quite an original (and beautiful) game, The Sexy Brutale is a puzzle/stealth/metroidvania game with an intriguing plot and clever mechanics. It's quite short, but I enjoyed it, so I recommend it.

z3r9I9yl.jpg

4 - INSIDE (10/02/18) (~3 hours) (PC/Steam) - 10/10

Superb atmosphere, clever puzzles and incredible physics. It was a 9/10 during the 90% of the game. Then the ending part made it a masterpiece, a true 10/10. Play this game.

duBpaekl.jpg

5 - Virginia (11/02/18) (~2 hours) (PC/Steam) - 6/10

The visuals and sound are superb, a true achievement, but everything else is a mess. The story is nonsensical for the sake of it, the player has little to no interaction with the environment, and it's extremely short (probably because is intended to be an interactive film?). Overall, I think it is a wonderful piece of art, but a poor videogame.

fDq5GIcl.jpg

6 - Doom II (15/02/18) (? hours) (PC/Chocolate Doom) - 6/10

It was fun until the final boss. WTF, had to google how to beat the final level because I had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to do and I ran out of patience after trying many times. Extremely frustrating final boss aside, it was fun, but I prefer the first Doom. Played the BFG version.

d1s2eGAl.png

7 - Monument Valley (18/02/18) (? hours, maybe 2?) (Smartphone/Android) - 10/10

A (short) masterpiece. A puzzle game designed to twist your brain while your eyes gaze at jawdropping scenarios. Play this game. (Completed both the base game and its expansion, as well as the amazing extra level.)

tHRik8jl.jpg

8 - Deus Ex Go (5/03/18) (? hours) (Smartphone/Android) - 7/10

Good puzzle game, but I think it's the worst in the GO series so far. It has community levels, weekly events, etc... but I find those quite repetitive after beating the main game. Not a bad game, but Tomb Raider GO is a vastly superior game.

VbMBta9l.jpg

9 - Punch Club (10/03/18) (~12 hours) (PC/Steam) - 6/10

Not a bad game, but extremely repetitive and quite borind towards the end. It has tons of references to other games and movies, so that's a plus if you get them :D

lrvi2w1l.jpg

10 - Machinarium (19/03/18) (5 hours) (PC/Steam) - 8/10

Machinarium is a point and click adventure set in a gorgeous place, full of funny characters. It's an easy and quite short title, but it is worth every minute of it. Recommended.

5VeeBn0l.jpg

11 - Art Of Gravity (28/03/18) (~2 hours) (PC/Steam) - 7/10

A relaxing puzzle game where you have to destroy all the blocks in the level with a limited amount of spheres. The last levels are a bit hard, but very rewarding. Recommended.

xF7xhOvl.jpg

12 - Tacoma (30/03/18) (2.5 hours) (PC/Steam) - 7/10

Tacoma is a walking simulator with a nice script and an interesting atmosphere. It reminded me of a typical sci-fi movie based around the characters, albeit the beginning of the game feels really slow and dull. Towards the ending things get much more interesting. Recommended.

xNgGpoGl.jpg

13 - Deponia (11/04/18) (~12 hours) (PC/Steam) - 7/10

I liked the game overall, but there were a couple of puzzles that I have to look up the solution on the internet, despite the game being fairly easy. That tainted the experience a bit for me. In the end, Deponia is a good game, with nice art style and some good jokes. Recommended.

RVXZgPCl.jpg

14 - The Walking Dead: Season Two (19/04/18) (~8 hours) (PC/Steam) - 10/10

Having one of the best stories ever created, I felt despair, anger and sorrow playing this game. It's a masterpiece.

nDRA1eql.jpg

15 - Halo Wars Definitive Edition (30/04/18) (~8 hours?) (PC/Windows Store/Xbox Game Pass) - 7/10

Let me say that Halo Wars is a really fun game and I honestly enjoyed it quite a lot. However... the story is awful, and the characters are almost a parody of themselves. Furthermore, the game lacks depth and variety of units (at least in the campaign), so I can't give it a higher note. It's a good game, don't get me wrong, and I'd probably gave it an 8 if the story had been better.

G2eecQMl.jpg

16 - Part Time UFO (10/05/18) (? hours) (Smartphone/Android) - 8/10

This game is so cute and cheerful! You control a small UFO with a hook and your goal is to help people by putting things on top of other things :) The physics are well implemented and that's the main point of the game. You can easily beat the story in no time, but getting all the medals can be quite tough (I still haven't done it myself). Recommended.

17 - Doom 64 (EX) (18/05/18) (? hours) (PC/Doom64 EX/N64 rom extracted via Retrode) - 7/10

While the graphics, sound and gameplay are really good, I've found some of the levels a bit reliant on backtracking and activating switches that you don't really know what they really do. The final boss battle is poorly designed (same mistake as Doom II) and was a spike in difficulty that was more annoying than challenging. I was expecting much more, but the game isn't bad overall, so I recommend it.

OjKsxmel.jpg

18 - The Room (23/05/18) (? hours, maybe 2) (Smartphone/Android) - 8/10

Very good puzzle game, with clever mechanics and satisfying puzzles. Its major drawback is that it is extremely short. I still recommend it though.

EraYM1El.jpg

19 - The Witcher (29/06/18) (? hours, GOG didn't track my playtime) (PC/GOG Galaxy) - 8/10

I had the first Witcher game in my backlog for years, so I decided to finally play it. It's a good game, with great dialogs, characters and mechanics, but it has a certain degree of jankiness that hold the game back in some areas, like animations, NPC diversity and the like. I enjoyed it though, and I think that, in the end, it's a nice game despite its limitations.

20 - Defense Grid: The Awakening (07/07/18) (~8 hours) (PC/Steam) - 7/10

I finished this game on 360 around its original launch date many years ago, but now I replayed the campaign in preparation to play its expansions that I bought in the Steam summer sale. Speaking of the game, it's not great, but it definitely is one of the best tower defense out there.

rzbABeal.jpg

20a - Defense Grid: Resurgence Map Pack (10/07/18) (? hours) (PC/Steam) - 6/10

8 new maps with some twists here and there, but nothing really amazing. The last map marks a difficulty spike that I didn't like at all, but overall it is a fun DLC.

1o7aUGDl.jpg

20b - Defense Grid: You Monster DLC (11/07/18) (2-3 hours?) (PC/Steam) - 8/10

Nice mini expansion based on Portal, with fun new mechanics and challenging maps. I found it much more enjoyable than the Resurgence map pack. It even has Ellen McLain as GLaDOS! Recommended.

fKRWzb8l.jpg

20c - Defense Grid: Contaiment (13/07/18) (2-3 hours?) (PC/Steam) - 7/10

More similar to the base game than the Portal DLC, I think it's a nice expansion, but it doesn't include new mechanics as the previous one did and as a result, in feels too "been there, done that". I still recommend it though.

nq5JCbRl.jpg

21 - RAGE (20/07/18) (15 hours) (PC/Steam) - 8/10

Note: I played the game and its expansion.

A mixture of Borderlands, Fallout and Mad Max, RAGE is a curious game. Excellent visuals aside, it is a faux open world fps based on linear missions and minigames, and it's a surprisingly fun and engaging experience. The ending was a joke, that's for sure, but I enjoyed the game quite a lot. Recommended.

G6OwbdGl.jpg

22 - Glass Masquerade (21/07/18) (~3 hours) (PC/Steam) - 7/10

A really pretty puzzle game, similar to a jigsaw. It is fun and relaxing but extremely short.

dlAv830l.jpg

23 - Snake Pass (15/08/18) (10-11 hours?) (PC/Steam) - 8/10

Excellent platformer with a colorful and enjoyable atmosphere. The controls, at first, are quite difficult, and the camera is somewhat bad in some levels, but once the game clicks with you navigating the environments is a very rewarding experience. I got the 100% achievement, it's not that hard except for the final level, and I had a blast doing it. Recommended.

vOZ4Xfwl.jpg

24 - Epistory - Typing Chronicles (17/08/18) (~4 hours) (PC/Steam) - 7/10

Beautiful puzzle/adventure game. You have to type words to kill the enemies and solve puzzles in the various dungeons you encounter through the game, obtaining new powers and upgrading your abilities. The art style is stunning, and the music matches the atmosphere quite well, but the story is kinda bland and too obvious. Overall, it's a short, fun game. Recommended.

Aw1U5z4l.jpg

25 - Monument Valley 2 (18/08/18) (? hours) (Smartphone/Android) - 9/10

Gorgeous sequel to Monument Valley, it's as good as the first one, but I decided to give it a 9 instead of a 10 because, honestly, I feel that it's a tad overpriced for its length. It's still an absolute masterpiece.

T7SwVgWl.jpg

26 - Doom 3 (13/09/18) (~10 hours) (PC/Steam) - 8/10

Note: Played the BFG version.

A really different take on Doom. This felt slower and creepier and, although I was entertained the whole game, I didn't like the way the story was told through audio and text logs, and ended skipping a lot of those. Overall, it's a good game, but I think I prefer the traditional frenetic Doom.

noc0rjGl.jpg

26a - Doom 3 Resurrection of Evil (15/09/18) (~3 1/2 hours) (PC/Steam) - 7/10

Note: Played the BFG version.

More of the same. The new shotgun is really nice, but the gameplay felt exactly the same. The final moments of the game were quite intense, but still nothing compared to the old, classic Doom. Although it was a pretty short expansion, I enjoyed it.

bVGTxYjl.jpg

26b - Doom 3 The Lost Mission (18/09/18) (~2 hours?) (PC/Steam) - 7/10

Micro expansion, it's basically a handful of levels with a thin storyline that connects it with the main game. I liked the design of the levels, specially near the end, where you can see inspiration from previous Doom titles. A nice way to end my journey through Doom 3 :)

cBOTVNvl.jpg

27 - PUSH (09/10/18) (? hours) (Smartphone/Android) - 7/10

Good puzzle game. Really short, as it is usual in this genre, but quite rewarding and entertaining. Recommended.

EZuFzPAl.jpg

28 - The Room Two (27/12/18) (3-4 hours?) (Smartphone/Android) - 8/10

Nice sequel of this puzzle game, with really great mechanics. The story was a little bit weird and I didn't care much about it, but the puzzles were fun overall. Recommended.

Not even close last year, hit maybe 10ish, in part because that included Witcher 2, tail end of XCX, and BotW. So figure I'll actually log it a bit this year and see how I do. I think my main bits will be to wipe out my WiiU backlog (about 10 games total), clean up my Steam one some, and if possible make a dent in my 3DS backlog. My 3DS backlog is RPG heavy though, so hard to get very far each year.

COMPLETED:
January:

1. Mario Odyssey - ~50hrs - A+
Just a fantastic all around fun game. Would have been my GotY 2017 if not for BotW. Played a lot of it over holiday break, finished it up this year. Post game was slightly disappointing vs 3D World, but the rest of the game was far better than 3D World. Probably didn't actually spend 50 hours on it, even though I 100%'d the findable moons, just left it on a few times.

2. Bayonetta 2 - 12hrs - A-
Great action game, cleaned up a lot of my issues with the first one (namely the awful alternate-gameplay levels) and ramped up the spectacle to absurd levels. While the game is clearly intended to be replayed a lot to go for platinums, I just don't find that super appealing. The collectables that require crappy platforming to find or hunting around levels still suck but don't detract from the rest of the experience.

3. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water Prologue - 0.5hrs - Incomplete/C-
Tried it out, some neat ideas but I could tell I'd get super annoyed at a full version of the game with the awful movement controls. I guess half (or a 10th) of a game in a way, but I gave it a shot and wrote it off, so counts to me!

4. Paper Mario: Color Splash - 30ish hrs (32 in log, probably around 30) - B+
Everything about this game is great - the art, the music, the writing - everything *except* the combat. Five to ten hours in, I probably would have put this at a B-, but the combat becomes a little better and a lot easier to avoid as you go through the game. Some of the battle concepts could have worked, but when combat is nothing more than a time wasting obstacle it's hard to get past that. Throw in a UI that can't decide if it's going to force touch on you or not, bosses that require you to have specific cards or they're literally unbeatable, and the stupid Kamek fights which often times are better to just restart the game when you encounter than to battle through, and what could have been an A+ gets dragged waaay down.

February:
5. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse - WiiU - 5hrs - B-
Pleasant enough for what it is, kinda wavering between B- and C+. The art and the music are great, has tons of extras if you're into that, and it's just a well produced game through and through. But for the most part the control scheme just doesn't make the game any more fun than it would be with normal controls. They appear to work just as intended, but having to draw lines all over then wait for your paint meter to refill because you made a mistake is tedious. Recycling bosses in such a short game is not cool either.

6. Child of Light - WiiU - 20hrs - A
Been meaning to play this for a while, finally did and ended up playing through it twice (second time on NG+/Hard). Probably 11ish hours for first playthrough. Great music, great art, solid if simple story, good characters. Game is like a love letter to the JRPGs of old. My one big knock against it is that combat system feels a little constrained when you can only have two people out at once. Yeah you can instantly switch, but the synergy of the various characters is a little lost when you do something like buff then immediately pull the buffer off screen. Minor quibble overall. I even liked how they stuck to their writing style the entire game, even if it did lead to a few bits of stretch writing.
NEXT UP (In no particular Order):
  1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch)
  2. Splatoon (1) SP (WiiU)
  3. Splatoon (2) SP (Switch)
  4. Life is Strange (PC)
  5. Cities: Skylines (PC) (again)
  6. Doom 2016 (PC)

1) Firewatch - 1/29 - 5 hours

I've been interesting in this game since some of the early trailers years ago. I loved the atmosphere and setting, as well as much of the initial intrigue around the story.
I feel kind of disappointed with how it turned out though. No conspiracies, no deeper mystery, just a dude who decided to live in the wilderness after his son died who then did some really weird stuff like spy on the rangers.
Still happy I played it though and definitely looking forward to their next game.

2/52 Complete
  • I won't be recording times because I tend to leave games running while I go off and do something else so my play times get massively inflated.
  • I will be adding mini-reviews/ thoughts as I go
  • I will add the date I beat each game
Just so we're clear my review scale is as follows:
  1. Beyond Terrible, the worst thing I've ever touched
  2. Terrible, speaks for itself
  3. Very Poor, most of the game was bad, very few redeeming qualities
  4. Sub-par, the game mostly just frustrated me, but it could have been worse
  5. Average didn't really feel anything one way or another
  6. Above Average, had a reasonably okay time but nothing that will stick with me
  7. Good, had a good time most of the way through, few just a few stumbling blocks
  8. Great, this game hits the nail on the head almost all the time, the only thing holding it back is a lack of ambition
  9. Amazing, this game really connected with me, a fantastic experience
  10. Perfect, this is basically an unobtainable score for me. I have never played a game I consider 10/10. The reason I don't give anything a 10 is because it implies the game is beyond criticism, and nothing is flawless as far as I'm concerned

1. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PS4) – Beat on 4/1/18
The last Uncharted game was my favourite in the series so far, this game uses the same base so the gameplay is just fine. In fact, its got the exact same flow Uncharted 4 so from a gameplay perspective this game is a good waste of 8 or so hours.

Storywise I was less impressed. I like Chloe and I like Nadine. They had good chemistry and the relationship was built up believably well. However the pay off wasn't very satisfying and The main villain was weak, he didn't really have any impact on the story other than being the bad guy, not that I'm expecting anything more from Uncharted, which has never really had a good antagonist.

7/10

2. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (Steam) - Beat on 13/01/18
So I've been in a pretty Star Wars state of mind since I watched The Last Jedi. I've always heard people talk about this game, but I've never touched it. The phrase people tend to throw around is "best lightsabre combat ever". Well after playing it, I can comfortably say, the hype is most definitely real.
The Lightsabre system is simple, with a shocking amount of depth. The way you play, your position, force powers and timing all coalesce together to create an authentic Jedi experience.

This game is fantastic. It's what I'd call a sum greater than its parts. Because when you break it down, there isn't anything that special being done here, but it all comes together in a way that really makes you feel the Jedi dream.

9/10

3. Resident Evil 5 Co-Op Replay (PS4) - Beat on 16/01/18

Resident Evil 4 is one of my favourite games ever made, and in terms of pure quality of craftsmanshit, its about as close to a pure 10/10 I've ever played. I, like many others, was disapointed by Resident Evil 5, but to be fair it had impossibly huge shoes to fill.
I like RE5 a lot, and playing it on Co-Op is definitely the way to play. Its a very tight game, but its clear throughought you're playing a lesser version of RE4.
Played this one with my Girlfriend and she enjoyed herself too.

7/10

4. Pokemon Fire Red (GBA Emulator) - Beat on 18/01/18
This is easily my most played game. I've beat Leaf Green version more times than I can possibly count with Nuzlock runs and single type runs. However I've never played the sister title, so I felt like playing through specifically using pokemon I hadn't given the time of day to before.
My final team ended up: Arcanine, Aerodactyl, Cloyster, Marrowack, Eggexutor, Electabuzz.

9/10 - Just like RE4 one of my personal favourites.

5. Infamous: Second Son (PS4) - Beat on 21/01/17
And this is the first dud of the year. Not a bad game by any means, but I like Sucker Punch and I really liked Infamous 2. I missed I:SS because I didn't by my PS4 at release. I was pretty excited to try it out and get more of that super hero goodness.
Aaaaannndd, I'm somewhat disapointed.
To be fair this is far from a bad game, but it just didn't do anything for me. The story was... there and I didn't really care for any of the characters. The gameplay hadn't improved in any meaningful way from Infamous 2, it just did everything with more particle effects.

6/10

6. Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped (PS1) - Beat on 01/02/18
My girlfriend made me play through the Spyro trilogy last year and the Crash trilogy, because I didn't own a PS1 as a kid. Started playing this last year, but ended up finishing it recently. I liked it, probably my favourite of the 3. A few things feel clunkier than they should though... which is fair enough I guess considering its an older game.

7/10

OK, I'm going to give this a go. I've tried at the other place in the past and usually either fail miserably or give up documenting my progress. Let's see if I can do better this year...

Haven't finished anything yet but for my first set of games, I'm planning.

1. Golf Story (In Progress)
2. Splatoon 2 Single Player campaign
3. Super Mario Odyssey
4. Steamworld Dig 2
5. Hey, Pikmin! (In progress)
6. Last of Us Remastered
7. Metroid Samus Returns
8. Yakuza Zero
9. Uncharted 4
10. Horizon Zero Dawn

Let's see if I can polish that little lot off by end of February, lol.

Game #2 - Uncharted 2 Among Thieves
Time: 9 hours

One of the most improved sequels ever made, Uncharted 2 feels like the game Naughty Dog wanted to make when they started the series. Much more varied locations, better shooting, fantastic set pieces, cast is rgeat as always with the much welcome addition of Chloe and it just looks flat out gorgeous (I'm not sure how much work was done to the remaster but if you told me this was a current gen game I would believe you), just a fantastic game all around. Even the blue guys weren't as annoying as I remember. These games are just a good ol' romp aren't they? Looking forward to 3 and 4 sicne I actually haven't played those.

header.jpg

Game #3 - 1979 Revolution Black Friday
Time: 2 hours

Very interesting look at the 1979 Iranian revolution, the game takes basically the Telltale approach (the current Telltale that is) of story telling to craft a surprisingly ambiguous story about a young photographer caught in this revolution. There are a few quick time events and lots of Telltale style dialogue options (including prompts saying characters will remember this heh), and also several moments where you are taking various photographs of various happenings during these protests (which all lead to interesting real life factoids). Its the real life setting that really sets this apart and makes it worthwhile, especially since its not very long. It's also quite bleak and violent, but unfortunately that is expected given the subject matter. Well worth a playthrough.

header.jpg

Game #4 - The Little Acre
Time: 1.5 hours

Super cute point and click adventure with gorgeous 2D art style that unfortunately is way too short to recomend at full price. Such mixed feelings about this as even tho I really enjoyed it, and it tells a nice story in its short duration, at full price there's just not enough game there to justify it. But, if you have it from a bundle or grab it on sale, and you like point and click adventures (or just cute little cartoon romps), it's one of the best ways to spend a hour and half.

LETS GOOOOO! Reserving as OP across the year.

Don't have a particular focus right now in terms of a big list of games I want to get done for the year, I'm still recovering from attending my brother's wedding and my birthday celebrations simultaneously, but I'll plot something out in the next few days. That said, think short-term, my first focus for the year will be Yakuza 0.

Other than that, lets goooo!

2: 'Cat Quest' by The Gentlebros (Switch) (03/01/18)
Another quirky little title to start off the New Years, this time with a pretty easy-going RPG 'lite' overworld adventure to rescue your sister and learn what it is to be Dragonbo-I mean Dragonblood. Combat was decent enough, from a game that is primarily based in an overworld wherein enemies spawn, though I found that whilst the game showered you with gear (a lot cosmetically fantastic), given the length and easily maintainable level of difficulty only a few were ever necessary. The cat puns and modern day references become a bit overbearing, but the game itself never outstayed it's welcome.

Completed: 2/52

To be completed:

L.A. Noire (Switch)
The Next Penelope (Switch)
Mr. Shifty (Switch)
The Mummy Remastered (Switch)
Okami HD(PS4)

2018

1) Pyre (PC) 12/29/2017-01/03/2018 13hrs ★★★★½
Pyre is a game that I will remember for its tense gameplay and excellent characters. It's a game that presented tough and meaningful decisions to the player. It's also a game that encourages playing through failures. It does unique things and does them well. The only place where the game falls flat for me is the interactions with the lore. Reading a long book out of order where each page is bulleted was tedious. By the end I was hurriedly skimming through the pages. Hurriedly skimming only because I had a kick-ass rite to perform.
2) Statik (PSVR) 12/?/2017-01/06/2018 5hrs ★★★★½
I think this review will need some context. I purchased an Oculus last year when the priced dropped. I found that there were almost no experiences that made the purchase feel worthwhile and I ended up returning it. When the PSVR dropped in price, I asked for it for chirstmas and my wife reluctantly obliged. I reasoned that there were more games that I actually wanted to play on PSVR (such as the Gran Turismo that was included in the bundle).
I had never heard of Statik before I bought it. It was simply on the NA PSN holiday sale and I checked reviews and saw that they were pretty positive. The game is such a gem. From the outset it had me hooked. You don't need to be moving around like crazy in your living room. It takes advantage of the most natural VR set up: you are siting down holding DS4. In the game you are strapped to a chair with your hands latched into an ever changing puzzle contraption. Each button on the DS4 is tied to some mechanism needed to solve the puzzle. The sounds from each corresponding button action are so statifying. The mysterious world is facscinating. The puzzles feel so rewarding. This is by far my favorite VR game. It alone made me satisfied with my PSVR purchase. I had no issue playing for hours at a time. If you have a PSVR, I heartily recommend this game.
3) Papers Please (PC) 01/18/2018 4hrs ★★★★½
I bought this game on a whim during a steam daily deal. I'd heard of it in the past and had a rough idea of what it was. If there's one thing that I want to get across about this game it's this: this game gets going quickly. I was stuck in rut with another game I was trying to complete and booted this up for a second. Roughly 5 minutes into the game. you are playing and it keeps you spinning plates and role playing. This game excels at keeping you engaged. I very much enjoyed the story and endings. I spent a total active play time of about an hour and a half as my wife became interested in switching playthroughs in a sort of ad hoc co-op. This experience was very enjoyable but I did not spend too much time actively playing as she got the hang of things quicker and had much longer play throughs. I 'stopped' playing in that I gave up watching after one of her runs and let her keep playing as she had become much more invested. That being said, I feel very satisfied (if a little bit depressed) with the short and dark endings I achieved.
4) Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (Switch) 21hrs 01/06/2018-01/20/2018 ★★½
I really thought I was going to like this game more than I did. It was slog by then end. I'm going to use qoute to another person's thoughts on the game because it pretty much sums up how I feel (let me know if quoting isn't cool on this thread...I'm new to the forum and I haven't ever quoted anyone).
there's just too many flaws with the game. Mario can't be removed from the party, you have to have a Rabbid character, you don't get a ton of characters till the game is half over, you can't undo movement like other Strategy games (Fire Emblem) which can result in you feeling forced to move then blindly hope you can hit. You move on a grid based system but it's impossible to tell how many "squares" something is away, and some "Challenges" that involve you usually getting flung to 3 specific spots on the map are basically trial and error, and no fun at all.
I did not 100% the game and just pushed through until I reached the credits. This game seemed like it was about moments and while some of them were really great, it wasn't enough to make me care. I'll also say that this game brought up a lot of anger towards Mario as a character that I didn't think I had. I accept that the rabbids are crazy but Mario just stands there reacting and providing nothing. The same goes for all the other non-rabbid characters. Their actions are just frustrating and I cared for them much less than I did characters from other strategy games.
5) Kirby Canvas Curse (DS) ?/?/2017-01/21/2018 5hrs ★★★½
I started this game last year but only put about 30 minutes into before stopping. I picked up again and beat it in one day. The gameplay is very unique and I enjoyed my time with it. The levels go by pretty quick and it has a very good flow going for it for most of the game. The only real issue I had with the game is that the difficulty ramped up pretty intensely towards the end of the game and I found the gameplay to not be precise enough to deal with the spike. I would recommend it as quick and alternative platformer.
6) Celeste (Switch) 01/26/2018-01/29/2018 10.5hrs ★★★★★
What a beautiful game. A game that brought me to tears and made me feel things that I needed to feel. The mechanics tie so closely to the story. It is so affective in it's simplicity. A tight platformer is the most moving game I played in 2018. I cannot recommend this enough.
7) Pokemon Ultra Sun (3DS) 12/20/2017-01/30/2018 28.5hrs
Barely different from Sun. Not docking stars because of that but it doens't help. The cutscenes are unbearable. Catching pokemon is fun. It's the only reason I'm here for this.
8) Detective Pikachu (3DS) 03/23/2018-04/01/2018 12hrs
These we a logn 12 hours. In it there are a solid 6 hours. I love pikachu and I love some of the moments from this game. It's just the game part of this game that is subpar. It's serviceable and is probably aimed at a younger audience.
9) Nier Automata routes B,C,D,E (PS4) 2017-04/19/2018 46hrs ★★★½
This would be 5 stars if it weren't for the combat. Certain people will defend it and I see what they are saying but I don't want a game that I help hook me. Playing through B was difficult. It was so worth it though. I know how hard it is to stick out to get to playthrough C. I just want to say it's worth it. The mood in this game is seaped in every nook and cranny. It's charmingly nihilistic. I have the fondest of memories
10) Super Metroid (Snes) 11.5hrs ★★★½
Played other metroivanians before this that came after this. This is still a very very good one.
11) Overcooked 2 (Switch) 10hrs ★★★
Had ton of fun playing this in 4 player co-op with my family. 100% the main campaing is difficult but doable. We found the additional content to be frustrating and unfair at times.
12) Warioware Gold (3DS) 5hrs ★★★½
I love this game. I had never played a Warioware game in the past and I regret it now. It's funny and keep me engaged for short bursts.
13) Steamworld Dig 2 (Switch) 8hrs ★★★½
Very good metroidvannia but I found the story to be lackluster. I just wasn't motivated enough to revist this world. I finished the game but it was hard towards the end.
14) Spiderman (PS4) 30hrs ★★★
Really was expecting more from this game. I hated the sequences where you play as other characters. The story wasn't great aside from octavious. Gameplay was ok but there were major annoyances, like characters with gun, that ruined the flow of combat.
15) Super Mario Party (Switch) 15hrs ★★★
Hey, they made a better mario party. I've played it probably 10 times. Each session was over an hour. Lots of fun and easy to play with casual gamers.
16) Night in the Woods (Switch) 8hrs ★★★
Story telling was good. They made a unique experience. Not a whole lot of systems but that was ok. It's a chill tight experience that I will cherish.
17) Astrobot (PSVR) 12hrs ★★★★½
This game is really good. Like mario 64 levels of good. It also wowed me like mario 64. This is a reason to buy psvr.
Failures (games that I started but did not finish in 2018)
God of War (PS4)
Played this for about an hour to see what the fuss was about. I think it's really cool but the end of the year was quickly approaching. Top of my backlog for 2019.
Phoenix Wright (3DS)
I have one chapter left in this game. I really didn't expect it to be so mystical so that's something to keep in mind if you're planning to play this. It's a good change of pace and easy to pick up and play in bursts.
Yakuza 0 (PS4)
I love Yakuza. I played 45 hours of this game. I put 35 hours in one week soley into the housing mini game. I burnt out after this as they immediatley introduce the hostess mini game. I will finish this game in 2019. Buy this game.
VA-11 Hall-A (PC)
I put a good 15 hours into this game but I felt like I didn't get much out of it. I have very little left of it so I imagine I will finish it one day but I don't think I'll give it a high score. I expected to get more from the cyber punk feel of the game but it just felt vapid story wise. More of a collection of intersting ideas than whole piece of art.
Monster Hunter World (PS4)
I really enjoyed my time with this game. It was unlike anything I had played before and it defintely clicked with me. Unfortunately, I moved house and somewhere along the way I stopped playing. This is going to be at the very top of my backlog for 2019, as I only have good memories of it and my wife wants to play with me.
Persona 3 Portable (PSP)
I put 7 hours into the game in 2017 and played this game for 53 hours in 2018. I really tried to get this one over the finish line in 2018 but I ran out of time. It's very enjoyable and is like comfort food for a persona fan like myself. I'll move this one to the new thread as it'll be the first game I finish in 2019.

3: 'The Next Penelope - Race to Odysseus' by Aurelien Regard (Switch) (03/01/18)
An absolutely fantastic action game that uses racing mechanics, without any kind of agency over your own speed for most of the game, to keep you entirely on edge. Not entirely a schmup, but uses tight, race-like elements to emulate the same sense of adrenaline-inducing gameplay. Set in a futuristic setting of the Odyssey, you are granted access to run through various trials in the styling of the ancient myths. Visual and sound design are equally as thrilling. My only complaint is it can be completed within hours once you get past the learning curve. Still, a great buy!

Completed: 3/52

To be completed:

L.A. Noire (Switch)
Mr. Shifty (Switch)
The Mummy Demastered (Switch)
Okami HD(PS4)
The Legend of Zelda (3DS VC)

Here I go!

1. Inside (2016) - 3 hours
Loved this game; it looks fantastic and has this atmosphere that brings so much tension just by the presentation and sound. The puzzles were great and the story felt surreal in a way that I haven't felt from a video game before.
2. Pyre (2017) - 8 hours
Haven't enjoyed the characters in a visual novel-type game more than Pyre. Choosing who to set free was a really difficult decision every time, weighing how useful someone was in the Rites, how much more I wanted to learn about their backstories, and how much they deserved to go free. Definitely want to dive back in at some point on a higher difficulty as well.
3. Dark Souls III (2016) - 28 hours
My first longer game of the year, I enjoyed Dark Souls 3 but as with most Souls' games I started getting really fatigued towards the last 2/3. I liked fighting the Nameless King, though the final boss was incredibly easy (probably due to my absurd magic build). Exploring every path of the early areas of this game and trying to figure out how to get an item hidden up in a window or behind a cell door was really fun.

Game #2 - Shin Megami Tensei Synchronisity Prologue
Completed 1/3/18 - ??? hours spent (but not that many) - 7/10

Grabbed this along with the English language patch last year but never got around to playing it. For reference, I have played zero MegaTen games, not even Persona ones, so a lot of the references were probably lost on me. But I do love Metroidvanias, so I couldn't resist a free one that looked alright, and it turns it, this was alright. Early game is pretty tough because there's no reliable healing other than items you buy and hitting save rooms, and it was only later that I realized that you actually heal some health automatically, albeit slowly. Combat isn't fantastic given how many enemies fly and Jack Frost's attack only going straight forward, so I spent a lot of time as Pyro Jack just to be able get hits in. Best parts are the Ikaruga bits when you have to switch between Frost and Pyro to avoid damage from ice and fire attacks, and thankfully almost all of the bosses incorporated this, making them pretty fun to fight.

Most importantly though, you can't beat the price of free.

Game #1

The Sexy Brutale - (PS4) - 100% Trophy Completion - 13 hours played (Jan 1st to Jan 3rd) - Grade: 94/100

This adventure/puzzle game (taking the form of a murder mystery at an elegant casino mansion) felt like an appropriate game for New Years. Gameplay revolves around solving the murders and mysteries using your powers to rewind time and set things right. When you save a partygoer you get their mask which bestows new powers and allows you to proceed further into the mansion and uncover more of the mystery. So it feels a bit like a metroidvania in terms of progression and backtracking.

This was a really wonderful game with a surprisingly deeper story than I'd expected, great art and sound design, and an awesome soundtrack. If you liked the time mechanics of Majora's Mask I think you'll really enjoy this as well. Even with what little time you get with the various characters -- they end up becoming quite endearing as you spy and follow their scripted routine throughout the day. The mansion itself is probably the most memorable locale since the original Resident Evil's Spencer Mansion.

My only real complaints are the lack of polish in a few minor areas. Object interaction can be kind of clunky. It may take a few tries to get the character to go through a door for example. Interaction animations can drag out too long where the player should be able to split out earlier and instead it takes too long for the animation to wind down. Also a few embarrassing grammatical errors in the story and menu text. As said, these are minor and are only slight blemishes on an otherwise outstanding game. Highly recommended.

Pros: Great concept, gameplay mechanics, art & audio direction.
Cons: Some clunky object interaction and minor text blemishes.

Flow_logo.jpg

Game #2
flOw - (PS4) - 22% Trophy Completion - 1 hour played (Jan 3rd) - Grade: 65/100

While I really loved both Flower and Journey, I couldn't get into flOw. The concept was alright but the controls just really ruined it for me. You play as (I guess) a microscopic creature in a pool of liquid gobbling up food and other organisms for growth and survival. You travel down deeper into the pool to progress until you reach an egg and then have the option to become a different creature with different abilities.

Like I said, the main thing that killed this for me were the controls (which were sixaxis). I never got to a point where they felt intuitive. On top of that, the creatures you play as aren't particularly mobile in the first place. I ended up getting really frustrated just trying to snatch a nearby morsel of food before another creature swooped in and snatched it from me. As a result, I just quickly powered through the game in an hour until I hit the credits.

I feel like it would be better with more traditional controls; however, I think without the motion controls it would really lay bare how thin of a concept the game really is. It does have nice aesthetics though.

Pros: Novel gameplay concept and aesthetically pleasing.
Cons: Sixaxis motion controls are unintuitive and lead to a frustrating experience.

1. Icewind Dale: EE
PC - 04/01/2018 - 30 hours - 8.0/10

Classic dungeon crawler, kinda overstays it's welcome near the end. The Heart of Winter expansion is good. Trials of the Luremaster is not (nothing but annoying monsters and damage sponges).

#1. The Unfinished Swan 1/1/18
Giant Sparrow has the idea that a fairy tale can be told in a colorless palette of regret and optimal resonance with a shade of baby blue
It's straightforward I appreciate the choices to mix up game play the last section is a great build a puzzle solve the vertical problem the ending doesn't land the way you expect but it's a nice conversation game with your girlfriend at the controls
Wait for Sale it's unique and enjoyable but not a must play $10 for 5-6 hrs is the right purchase point

2. Telltale The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 1 - Ties That Bind Part 1
1/1/18
It's been 2 years since I played this series quick wrap up adored season 1 (Screw you Kenny) Was lukewarm on season 2 till the end episode
So right away I was happy to see a new character with no past known as of now to sit and contemplate ( the .... Choice is my favorite listen to the characters feel me in on what's occurring while still being accosted for not saying anything )
The actual gameplay investigation and combat are still a bit of a chore to get through and yes early on some big choices seem very swift without considering the consequences
It was a great reveal of Clementine her personality carried through the second half of look I'm here because.... The ending leaves me with questions about approaching episode 2 later this week
No rating till Season is complete

1. Gorogoa (iOS) - Jan. 2 - Roughly 2 hours

"Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit and tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes, I will be brief...." - Hamlet

If games like Gorogoa were more common, we'd all have an easier time pushing video games as a legitimate art form. Don't get me wrong, there is absolutely artistic value to be found in more mainstream gamer-games like Persona 5, Wolfenstein or NieR. But it's so much harder to convince people outside of our circles that games about whacky high school hijinks, grotesque Nazi murdering or sexy robots are "art." But when you look at Gorogoa, you know it's art. It's clear from the first, second and every subsequent panel that you're playing with something that is art from head to toe.

The most admirable thing about Gorogoa is that it doesn't sacrifice every other aspect of game design just for the sake of being pretty. Because there are plenty of gorgeous, vapid games out there in the world. Yet Gorogoa makes sense every time you touch a panel. Not in the "this is too easy" kind of making sense, but in the way that you just shake your head and smile because it was perfectly clever. Only once did I find myself stuck and needing a bit of outside help, and that was because I forgot I could zoom out on a particular panel after taking an overnight break.

But even beyond that, Gorogoa seems to have something touching (and in many ways profound) to say. And that's where the "brevity" shines through the brightest. The game could have been longer, it could have overstayed its welcome. It could have even beaten you over the head more with its message more clearly and far less subtly. But it never does that. The moment when it felt like the journey was wrapping up, it did. There was no secondary climax, or rebound. It came to say and show what it wanted to, and then was done. And in a world of 40, 50, 90, 100+ hour games...that's laudable.

Should I play Gorogoa? If you are a lover of beautiful games, puzzles and/or interactive fiction, you should absolutely give Gorogoa a spin. It seems worth noting as a final addendum that I cannot imagine playing Gorogoa anywhere that didn't have a touchscreen. The tactile interactivity just feels right.

1. Star Wars Republic Commando - Jan. 4 (9h)
Fairly straightforward 'tactical' shooter from the original Xbox era. You have basic command over a unit, all of the squad members being completely interchangeable. You go down linear corridors, shooting the same bullet sponges repeatedly until dead, and repeat. There's not much of a story here either, but at least they didn't try doing a bunch of cutscenes. Overall, I thought it was a completely forgettable game, with some serious PC port issues. Would not recommend.

2. Killer Instinct: Season Two (5 hours)
I like how the season two story modes actually flesh out the plot and world this time around, though the amount of characterization we got still leaves a lot to be desired. Still, it feels like Iron Galaxy is experimenting with different types of movesets with their first season.

Full list to date

Completed:

1. Little Nightmares 03.01.18
I had a really good time with this, atmospheric, creepy and it was great fun trying to figure out some of the puzzles. I would put this up there with Limbo and Inside from the genre in terms of rating. At least at 9/10 for me.

2. Hellblade: Senua's sacrifice 20.01.18
This one took a while to get into, probably because one section of puzzles had me back tracking and getting things wrong seemingly forever. But once I got passed that the story was very interesting and I ended up enjoying it quite a lot. 8/10

Playing:

COD WW2 - single player
Life is strange: before the storm
Yakuza 0
Xenoblade chronicles 2

I'm here finally, last year ended in accepted failure due to me going through my last school semester.
current games:
Fairy Fencer F
Zelda Breath of the wild

Completed Games:
1: Little Nightmares
header.jpg

Played this game with some friends. I was not going to count it but I played enough of a chunk to count it in. I was thinking about what words to use in this review. One word that came up a lot is perspective. Because it was that and loud curse words came out of our mouths multiple times. The game has perspective issues, so get use to running off pipes are jumping into oblivion because there is no shadow indicating where you will land. I never thought I'd say this in a game, but some expansion dump would have been appreciated. We played this on the first and right after asked each other what the story was followed by a group shrug. I also wonder who decided the controls on this game. Because you have to crotch and grab things a lot, you assume they would be close together. Nope, they are you trigger buttons, one trigger and the other trigger, add in running in on the face buttons and jump near it the run and you get a recipe for players facing to their death a lot or being caught by the enemies. Scenery is great, when I was not playing the game I got a good glimpse at the game's background and it feels unnerving like something will come kill you at any moment.

Check it out if:
You like atmospheric horror
it's on sale
you enjoy games similar to limbo but not limbo

Avoid if:
if you have limbo, it is the better game
if you like story interwoven with game play as well
you don't want to replay the game multiple time to figure out what is going on
2: Trillion God of Destruction
header.jpg

One of the many games I picked up at the end of the year stream bargain bin for 3 dollars. That being said, Trillion is a mixture of many genres. It has visual novel elements where game play takes a backseat and narrative runs free. Then, dungeon crawling with the valley of swords area and the one evolving boss fight with Trillion. The game has an interesting enough narrative to keep you into it. The problem is that the narrative doesn't really open up unless you interact with your overlords. You can either train your overlord so that they can dig in their heels and face Trillion or interact with them and gather more story and information about the characters. They seemed to grow on me the more information I found out about them. Most of them are related to you so it's good that it doesn't turn into "date the loli" for most of them. That being said, I can tell their personality just by looking at them. The overlords are the only ones that can fight trillion, and the game makes it very clear that if they fall in the fight, they will be eaten. You will hear crunching noises and read final thoughts of the fallen overlords. I will say the first time I heard it, it hit me pretty hard. Then, all the remained was anger because the game tells you that everything that overlord has is gone. Meaning you have to train up another overlord with less equips. On steam, if you want to play this game with mouse and keyboard, I wish you good luck. It is the bad type of port that did not take alternate ways of play into account. But, even with controller there were times I had to unplug it and plug it back in for it to respond giving me that "damned if you do, damned if you don't" moment.

Check it out if:
You like Visual Novels with a tad more game play
You like the "enjoy your own death" tag
You like games with replay value, this one has a lot of endings

Avoid if:
You want more dungeons to crawl through than just one floor
You only use mouse and keyboard
anime cliches annoy you, the normal ones are here
3 Danganronpa V3
header.jpg

So my birthday passed recently and my better half decided to hit me with an idea for a birthday gift for my vita. I am no stranger to the DR series, so I was eager to play this game. Danganronpa V3 leads our protagonists through another killing game where the name of the game is to either kill to get out while surviving the class trail or be the last two at the end. If the "blackened one" lives through the class trail, everyone else gets killed, but if they get caught in the class trail, then they are the only one that dies. The story closely resembles the first two when it starts, and then, things start to shift in a way I am did not expect. The game is separated into three modes, daily life, investigation and class trail. Daily life is where you get to gather lore about the characters. The game developers did away with the visible heart system that gives you an idea of who will be around for the end of the game. I will say that unlike the first two cast of characters, these characters come off as over the top. Some of them are just plan annoying, they do grow on you, but not fast enough for some. Investigation mode comes after a body is discovered by three or more people. You get the cause of death, time of dead, and injuries on the body from a file your beary good headmaster gives you. Of course, if any of them within the file gives too much of a clue as to who did it, you can expect to not see it mentioned in the file. The game developers fine tuned this part as well so it is not as grueling. You get an "observe" button to give you a highlight on what you can click on. It helps speed things up rather nicely. Now if only the game developers would hear my wish of having fast travel when I need them not when they feel like I need them. Last is the class trail. This is where the game comes to life. The game offers a lot of "minigames" in between testimonies to keep you on your toes. I'll just be frank, some of these feel like that were throw on because we expected it to become bigger. Also I wish the game would stop giving me multiple things that could actually counter testimonies but want me to use one that requires the biggest leap of logic. As per the story, pay very close attention. This review took so long because of how much I had to write and take note of little things I would not even expect.

Check it out if:
You like dark Visual Novels
You enjoyed the First two
You like mysteries

Avoid if:
You do not have a vita, I like this game but 60 is a bit much
You like your mysteries without anime characters, you will hate Mui, a lot
You enjoy more action with your mysteries or not big on mysteries

01. Cuphead - 18 hours (Full A+ clears) [5/5]
Refreshing style and a fun boss rush. The scoring system makes improving your strategy for each boss fun to do. The levels are short enough that failure feels like another opportunity to take another crack at the boss, rather than a soul-crushing failure.

02. Divinity: Original Sin 2 - 75 hours - [3.5/5]
It's not a bad game by any means, but I was a lot less impressed with this than the first game. I didn't find the characters or main plot to be that much of an improvement over the first game. The moment-to-moment writing was well done, but the overall thrust of the plot feels too diluted by the pacing of the early acts. A lot of the complaints I read online were about the 'too short' Act 3, but that was actually my favorite. It felt like there was constant momentum towards the end of the act.

I didn't enjoy combat as much as the first game either. I felt like I was stuck relying on the same handful of combat moves, despite having dozens at my disposal. The bulk of the abilities feel valuable only in very rare situations. The armor system contributes to a lot of that feeling. The bulk of abilities don't do anything useful until enemies' armor is gone, but getting rid of that armor means you've already done the bulk of the work.
