98) Astro Bot: Rescue Mission - This is the game that made me a believer in VR. It is a constant joy from start to finish and it never ran out of ideas. This is quite easily the best 3D platformer of the year and among the best ever made. I'm so happy that game is seeing major success and I hope we continue to see great support for VR in the future because this is incredible.

67. Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins - Gameboy
Completed 12/22/18
Score - 8/10

Still an awesome game for it's time. Great platforming and great introduction to Wario. The game was way easier than I remember it being. Only one level in space land gave me any trouble. Quick and easy beat. Still enjoyable to play through.

68. Sonic Spinball - Genesis
Completed 12/23/18
Score - 7/10

Never beat the first board as a kid. Would always go to my buddies place, play for 10-15 mins and quit in frustration. Using save states was the only way I was going to be able to get through this one. It was creative and fun at times but way too challenging. Lots of the game seems to be based on luck. I was pretty shocked to see the game only had 4 boards but then I wondered how many kids were like me and never got past the first level. Also, for such a hard ass game...that ending was a slap in the face. I didn't expect anything major but geez...it sucked.

That probably wraps it up for me this year since I just broke into Spider-man on PS4 but maybe I will knock out a few games like Sonic & Knuckles before 2019 comes.

74. Yakuza 0 - 80 hours
After years of gaming experience and literally thousands games played, there are moments when I thought that nothing would really surprise anymore. But as long as games like Yakuza 0 keep releasing, I'll keep buying and playing them, because games like this are the reason why I enjoying gaming so much. Yakuza 0 is amazing on so many levels it really hard to describe it, this game is simply amazing and did almost everything right. Story is incredibly well written and dramatic, fights are slick and satisfying, openworld is very compact but at the same time full of different activities and pure joy to explore, music and sound are out of their league and mind-blowingly great. This game is living classic, a definition of fun, there is so much content it would be enough for 10 modern AAA sandboxes, it's amazing to see such beefy game with no bullshit attached in the current market. It's not 100% perfect though, I'd say 98-99% perfect - lack of autosaves and ability to save everywhere anytime is kinda baffling, but it easy to deal with it when there is so much good stuff in this game. Also, there are tons of mini-games, which is great, but if you are aiming for 100% completion that could be a problem because you probably won't like them all and it would be painful to complete everything. Regardless, Yakuza 0 is one of the rare games that absolutely worth even its full price, if still haven't played it you miss out one of the best games ever made.

62) Mass Effect (Origin, 17 hours)
Played it after I watched the Giant Bomb playthrough, so I skipped most side quests. I expected worse, I think it aged reasonably well. The Mako stuff is a bit of a bummer, but honestly not that bad. It succeeded in making me excited to play Mass Effect 2.

63) DERE EVIL .EXE (Steam, 2 hours)
Didn't enjoy this one all that much. This type of meta horror storytelling has been done a lot better in other games, the platforming is okay.

64) Donut County (Steam, 2 hours and 30 minutes)
Played through this game in one sitting last morning and had a great time. Very relaxing and just a pleasant experience.

65) Shenmue (Steam, 17 hours and 30 minutes)
I don't think this game holds up very well, but there is something there. Hopefully the sequel fixes some of its problems.

I suspect this may be it for me this year, unless I manage to finish Smash's story mode in time. While I finished around 15 games less than in 2017, I'm still happy with this year. On to 2019!

130. Darksiders

Replayed this on Apocalyptic/Hard, and would've liked it if enemies were a little more smart or aggro, although they do hit like a truck woof. It's a solid Action Adventure game, with nice voice acting, and serves as a decent 'first time video game player's' game.

131. Law & Order Legacies

Decent little Adventure game, there's not much to the game as its linear with the goal being properly identifying statements and evidence needed to complete an episode and its trial. Trials can have different endings depending on whether you want to settle with the defense or continue with the trial further.

Mega 2018 Update (March to December 28th)

Game 4 - Nex Machina ★★★★
Pure arcade fun that rewards those that can actually play this kind of games, which I'm definitely not one of them. Still enjoyed finishing it twice but don't feel the same desire to improve scores like I did with Resogun or Dead Nation.

Game 5 - Slyde
Puzzle game made simple. Shallow but at least it works.

Game 6 - InkSplosion ★★
I don't usually like games that are random as this (weapons are randomized which can make the game much easier or harder than it should be) but the visual aspects and strategy required to use each gun make me actually enjoy the game.

Game 7 - Hex Tunnel Touch
Steep learning curves because of the obtuse controls but after going through that it's actually a quite enjoyable game.

Game 8 - Minefield
It's minefield for free. Fun for a short bit but nothing more.

Game 9 - Super Destronaut DX
Knock off but the challenge mode is fun.

Game 10 - Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 ★★
MyClub still doesn't touch Ultimate Team and while the gameplay keeps improving, Master League is still flawed and the online doesn't work a lot of the times. There is a foundation of a great game in there but Konami as not made it yet.

Game 11 - LawBreakers ★★★
Great game that was destroyed by the traditional hater gamers parade that were triggered because someone dared to make fun of their precious anime. Such a shame because the core gameplay of LawBreakers deserved more attention and a place in the marketplace.

Game 12 - WRC 5
A rally car shouldn't drive like it's on ice on every surface, but for some reason this one does. Just play Dirt Rally.

Game 13 - Pic-a-Pix Color ★★
A like this kind of games and this one has a couple of hard challenges like I want. Still the vulcano is too much!!!

Game 14 - Hue
A decent puzzle game with a cool core mechanic which becomes harder with time.

Game 15 - Licky The Lucky Lizard Lives Again
A game should at least has some control over them. Well....

Game 16 - King Oddball
It gets repetitive with time but this Angry Birds clone at least has some nice ideas.

Game 17 - Dying Reborn
Hilarious terror game. Framerate is terrible, story is comic.

Game 18 - Squares
I want to destroy my Vita. But I would play again...

Game 19 - NBA 2K19: The Prelude
Nice introduction for this year Microtransaction 2K19 full game. Story seems reasonable.

Game 20 - DrawFighters
At least it tries to have some fun, but the gameplay is just boring.

Game 21 - F1 2017
A massive improvement for the career mode and a much needed one. Still needs some kind of drivers market.

Game 22 - inFamous: Second Son
Great movement and powers, it just needed a better city and mission structure to be a great game. Story was nice though.

Game 23 - Call of Duty: WWII ★★
Singleplayer was a massive letdown even by COD standards and the multiplayer while improved over previous game due to boots on the ground, it was still a mess because of the low quality of the maps.

Game 24 - Laser League
Nice game that lacks more simplicity to be the new Rocket League. Thumbs up for bots in online multiplayer if there isn't anyone playing.

Game 25 - Overcooked
Best local co-op game of this generation.

Game 26 - FullBlast
Boring.

Game 27 - Jack N' Jill DX
Better but still boring.

Game 28 - F1 2018
Gameplay improved over F1 2017. Still needs a driver market in career mode or full management mode to make it a special game.

Game 29 - Warface
Another boring one.

Game 30 - NASCAR Heat Evolution
Physics are a mess and the career mode structure is not great either.

Game 31 - NBA 2K17
Gameplay is great, Association is still the best in the business but the microtransactions required on MyCareer to be at least average is an embarassment.

Game 32 - Fallout Shelter
Quests help but the tolerance for the game is reached quite quickly. Fun for a bit and nothing more.

Game 33 - FIFA 19 ★★
EA really needs to make a huge leap of the gameplay and the career mode. Ultimate Mode is still the best but this year there isn't much improvement like they did in 18 with Squad Battles.

Game 34 - Peggle 2
It's Peggle.

Game 35 - NBA Live 18
Gameplay is still worse than NBA 2K and the shallow Franchise Mode deserved more coverage by the gaming media because of how terrible it is. The One mode is good and a lot less reliable on microtransactions than NBA 2K.

Game 36 - Trials Fusion
It's Trials made worse by having half the campaign under a Season Pass.

Well I don't think I will be completing anything else between now and the new year so it looks like my final count will be 10 (original post here).

My final lists are below.

Completed:

#01: Cook, Serve, Delicious 2!! - Vertigo Gaming Inc. - PC - comments - 13 hours - ★★★☆☆
#02: Descenders - Ragesquid - PC - comments - 10.4 hours - ★★★☆☆
#03: WoodFarer - Yasaman Farazan and others - PC - comments - ~1 hour - ★★★☆☆
#04: Domino Sky - Russpuppy - PC - comments - 2.9 hours - ★★☆☆☆
#05: XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Firaxis Games - PC - comments - 33 hours - ★★★☆☆
#06: XCOM: Enemy Within - Firaxis Games - PC - comments - 44 hours - ★★★★☆
#07: Super Inefficient Golf - 34BigThings - PC - comments - 2.4 hours - ★★☆☆☆
#08: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands - Ubisoft - PC - comments - 69 hours - ★★★☆☆
#09: Dark Souls III - From Software - PC - comments - 179 hours - ★★★★★
#10: HITMAN - IO Interactive A/S - PC - comments - 115 hours - ★★★★☆

Note: hours played include hours played in these games previous to 2018 so do not necessarily reflect play time for the year itself.

☆☆☆☆☆ - Unplayable | ★☆☆☆☆ - Bad | ★★☆☆☆ - OK | ★★★☆☆ - Good | ★★★★☆ - Great | ★★★★★ - Exceptional

Started/continued and still actively playing:

- PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS - PUBG Corp - PC
- Fortnite - Epic Games - PC
- Kerbal Space Program - Squad - PC
- Hitman 2 - PC - IO Interactive
- Forza Horizon 4 - Playground Games / Turn 10 - PC
- Dead Rising 2: Off the Record - Capcom - PC
- Not Tonight - PanicBarn - PC
- Dead Cells - Motion Twin - PC
- Return of the Obra Dinn - Lucas Pope - PC
- Katamario Damacy REROLL - MONKEYCRAFT Co. Ltd./BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment - PC

Started and revisiting now and then when the mood takes:

- Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy - Bennet Foddy - PC
- Passpartout: The Starving Artist - Flamebait Games - PC
- GRID Autosport - Codemasters Racing - PC
- BeamNG.Drive - BeamNG - PC
- Project Cars - Slightly Mad Studios - PC
- Grand Theft Auto V - Rockstar Games - PC
- Euro Truck Simulator 2 - SCS Software - PC
- American Truck Simulator - SCS Software - PC

Started and given up on:

- Sea of Thieves - Rare - PC
I think I could like this with friends but solo this simply doesn't have enough in it to engage me. The world doesn't seem varied enough to push me to explore and the tools given to the player to engage with world seem similarly lacking in depth.
- Luftrausers - Vlambeer - PC
I just couldn't get into the controls of this one but was at the time looking for a straight up vertical or horizontal shooter so this is more on me than the game.
- God of War - Santa Monica Studios - PS4
I can see the quality but this game is really not designed for me, all it really made me want to do is play more Dark Souls 3. The Stranger fight was where I dropped it, early I know but I really couldn't deal with the cinematic presentation taking precedence over player control.
- Red Dead Redemption - Rockstar Games - PS4
Rockstar builds amazing worlds but this one simply isn't for me. Maybe with mods if it comes to PC it will be a experience more for me.

Thanks to Wozzer for stewarding the thread and to everyone who posted for sharing their lists and experience. I look forward to the 2019 edition.

Have a fab new year everyone!

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

GameCube
Completed: December 10, 2018
Playtime: 52h 30m
After playing (and loving) the Persona games I'm picking up Fire Emblem as the next JRPG franchise to catch up with. The tactical battles part of the game can be described as japanese version of XCOM missions in a fantasy setting - you command your own band of soldiers who you not only control in combat, but also recruit, equip for battle, assign/improve RPG skills, abilities, XP, and companion bonds (love this feature, lots of funny dialog possibilities from some combinations). It's a lot less complicated than XCOM of course, and also much easier. I started playing on Normal difficulty, and ended up regretting that decision as the initial dozen or so missions seemed extremely easy due to a couple of clearly OP units who demolish everything in their path in 1-2 hits while barely taking any damage. It gets a bit tougher in the second part of the game, which introduces more dangerous enemy specialists and bosses who can be a serious threat to most units in your army. The story (told in VN format between missions) is surprisingly good, by the way. Overall, a great game which I enjoyed playing.

Late Shift

PC
Completed: December 14, 2018
Playtime: 4h 39m
Fully FMV game with branching paths (or a movie with game-like choice prompts to trigger different scenes, if you prefer). I liked my first playthrough (which turned out to be one of two best possible endings) well enough as the story kept me interested, but further playthroughs made the shortcomings of the game painfully obvious. First, it does not let you skip/fast-forward anything, even scenes you've already watched. So even if you only want to change one particular decision in the second part of the story, you're going to have to sit through the same first 40-60 minutes again. Second, while the final stats screen boasts 7 different endings, in reality it's more like 2-3 endings, with others having only very slight variations in how you reach the same setup. There are lots of decisions/choices, and some of them do result in significantly different scenes, but they all converge into the same few outcomes in the end. So I would only recommend this game for one playthrough (maybe two if you fail to reach a satisfying ending on first attempt), and then I'd suggest to go look up the rest on youtube, as the rest probably is not worth your time.

NVIDIA VR Funhouse

PC VR (HTC Vive)
Completed: December 28, 2018
Playtime: 35m
A free VR showcase consisting of several fun mini-games. There's throwing, bow shooting, whack-a-mole, punching/boxing, balloon popping, paintgun shooting, and probably some others I'm forgetting. It may not sound like much and it's over pretty quick, but as one of my first interactive room-scale VR experiences, this was very cool to play. I had a little trouble getting it to work at acceptable performance initially - at first launch the game was dropping frames like crazy. But I managed to somehow fix that by fiddling with video quality presets (game reported 'Low' quality by default, but I think it was actually set to 'High', or something like that, so switching it to 'Medium' made it better).

#56
SVRVIVE: The Deus Helix

PC VR (HTC Vive)
Completed: December 29, 2018
Playtime: 5h 56m
Now this one is a full-on VR game, no tech demo. It's a puzzle/adventure game where in each mission you're dropped into a location to look for a specific item. To find one, you have to carefully search the environment for clues and solve puzzles of varying complexity. Again, this description may not sound like much, but experiencing the scale of it in VR in first-person is game-changing for me. Just being able to pick up and examine items by physically crouching and moving your head and hands, or using an axe/pirate cutlass by actually, well, swinging them, made the game feel more unique/different than literally any adventure game I played before. I like how all levels have very different environments and feel about them. As a downside, I wish it would have a hint system of some sort - I got stuck on the last two levels without any guidance in certain places about what I as the player was supposed to do.

Currently playing and carrying on into the new year:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
Divinity: Original Sin II (PC)
CLANNAD (PC)
Hitman 2 (PC)
Persona 3-5 Dancing games (PS4)
Vampyr (PC)
+ VR stuff: Arcade Saga, Torn, Summer Funland

Don't think I'll finish anything else this year, so will also post the final master post / index list in a bit.

I think what I liked most about the game is its gameplay mechanics, though I felt stages were a mix of decent and annoying design such as 1 hit death spikes and bottomless pits.
The whole debacle around the game is unfortunate, but personally I wouldn't mind a sequel that refines the stage design at least.

133. Mighty Gunvolt

OK this I enjoyed a lot more. It's closer to traditional Megaman games being a 2D action platformer, although stages are unlocked linearly and there are about half a dozen stages only, with each stage ending with a boss fight.
There are 3 characters to choose from: Beck, Gunvolt & Ekoro. I beat the game with Gunvolt who plays like Megaman as in Megaman 2 but with 2 unique features: He can double jump and holding the shot button will have him charge for 1-2 seconds and fire a ranged energy burst which he can aim down and up infront of him.
Overall stage design is simple and bosses are good with a few I managed to beat with a handful of hit points left on me.
I only beat it with Gunvolt but I enjoyed it a lot.

MAIN POST

My last post of the year! Played way more than I expected these last two months but that's also because I've been avoiding larger games for a bit.

Honorable mentions:

---Games I dropped---
Pocket Card Jockey - This was really addicting but I couldn't take the losses anymore and lost my temper at getting boxed in all the time when I had great tools to win the race.
Golf Story - I like this game a lot but not enough to finish it because it's a whole lot of golf. It's really charming though, and has some of the most fun use of HD Rumble.

---Games I Didn't Finish---
Pokemon Ultra Moon - Stuck at Elite 4, it's a long story but the short of it is that I messed up my team comp
Monster Hunter World - Played way too many hours to have not beat the main story yet, I'm getting there. I'm fighting the Elder Dragons.
The Legend of Zelda Oracle Ages - Randomly stuck, been too lazy to look it up, I'm bad at games haha. I'm about to go into Jabu Jabu's Belly
Dillon's Rolling Western - Been trying to get into this series a few times, gotta let go of my perfectionism
Gorogoa - Started it, loved it, need a free afternoon to blast throughh this, it's not great for bit sized game time
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - Got distracted by everything else this year, played too many massive RPGs in 2017
Super Smash Bros Ultimate - Taking my time with World of Light

Felt I couldn't not mention those, now let's get into the games I played!

NOVEMBER 2018
57. One Piece Grand Cruise (PSVR) - 2/4 (Completed Nov 1, 2018)
Completed Story | 47% Trophies
bBHrpb4.jpg

I hesitated on including this because I haven't included a lot of PSVR experiences but I love One Piece and I payed for it so I'm going to talk about it. This thing is so cheap and janky, the only thing that saves it was being able to seeing all the One Piece characters and exploring parts of the Thousand Sunny. The most engaging gameplay you do is shooting cannons at things flying at you and there's plenty other similar games that do this. Otherwise you're going to be looking around for 80% of the game. I haven't gotten to explore everything yet since gameplay was so lackluster but it was worth the $5 I spent.

58. Bloodborne: The Old Hunters (PS4) - 4/4 (Completed Nov 5, 2018)
Completed Story | 100% Trophies
MA3pwUc.jpg

Took me long enough. I was closer to the end than I expected, just had to clean up Fishing Hamlet, Lighthouse Hut, and Orphan of Kos. I even finished up the Bloodborne story but I still haven't finished all the Chalice Dungeons. It's been so long since this has come out and I've touched it, I feel a bit of apathy to it? It's really good, one of the best DLC expansions I have ever played, all the new weapons are really fun too.

59. Musynx (PS4) - 2/4 (Completed Nov 9, 2018)
Completed All 4K Mode Songs on Easy | 36% Trophies
tqdK1wc.jpg

I was not expecting Chinese vocaloid! I'm so far detached from Chinese internet culture that I hadn't heard much music like what was in this game. Despite my low score, it's a pretty competent music game, I just don't want to go through all its tracks. It plays nearly identical to DJ Max with its 4 button and 6 buttons modes except it is way more lenient with its score timing. The thing that bothered me the most about this game was how each song doesn't have unique backing videos and how the skins are set for each song with several songs in an undefined set sharing the same skin. This would be fine if there weren't some outright unbearable skins, especially near the end.

60. Super Time Force Ultra (PSVita) - 4/4 (Completed Nov 12, 2018)
Completed Story Mode | 59% Trophies
waTegWy.jpg

Another game I started a long time ago and decided to just finish up while at family friends gatherings. This game is insanely fun, the only reason I didn't finish the game whenever it was that I started it was because it's pretty little hard too. I don't think I'll ever finish the Helladeck missions so I think I'm pretty much done with the game now. I feel that there's a bit too many characters too since I mostly stuck to the same few characters but that's not even a good complaint because too many characters don't detract from the game at all. I feel the dialogue can be a bit cringey for some people but I found it fun nonetheless.

61. Sparkle 2 (PSVita) - 1/4 (Completed November 15, 2018)
Completed Quest on Normal Difficulty | Obtained All Stars in Survival Mode | 57% Trophies
0uGHLnk.jpg

I uh... spent way more time with this game than I should have. I can't even say I like it that much, it's just really addicting. I found myself nearly finishing Challenge Mode before coming to the conclusion that this was too repetitive and that I was beating everything easily and it was just eating away at my time while I could be playing other games, so I just put this down and started playing Monster Hunter again.

62. Marvel's Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps - Turf Wars (PS4) - 3/4 (Completed Nov 21, 2018)
Completed Story | Amazing Difficulty | 100% Trophies
jsWYaGI.jpg

In retrospect, the weakest of the bunch. At the time, it made me pretty sour on the DLC since I was so into the first one. I was really disappointed to see Screwball yet again. There's something to be said of the repetitive nature of the game but I still really love swinging around New York. The side missions wasn't as interesting as the story behind finding the paintings in the first DLC, which was also somewhat different from the rest of the game. This one, you're just fighting through bases again. I just, augh. I want to play through the game again just not this particular DLC campagin.

63. Tetris Effect (PSVR) - 4/4 (Completed Nov 21, 2018)
Completed Journey Mode | 35% Trophies
TDMXBCi.jpg

Holy shit. Holy shit. Tetris, game of the year. Absolutely mesmerizing. I feel like I played so much Tetris but also go so little done in this game, and I WANT to keep doing more stuff in this game. I almost wish there was just a visualizer mode but the new Zone system just makes Tetris that much more engaging. Maybe I'm just bad a Tetris, I can't do those T-block clear formations things, that last set of missions for Journey mode was pretty hard for me. This has been such a good year for me to re-discover my love for Tetsuya Mizuguchi's games with the releases of Lumines Remastered and Rez Infinite and now this. Never stop.

DECEMBER 2018
64. Rhythm Heaven Megamix (3DS) 4/4 (Completed Dec 5, 2018)
Completed Story Mode | Gold Ranked All Story Mode Games
VkB4151.jpg

Been playing a lot of music games this year, but nothing like this. In some ways, this game is even more of a puzzle than the puzzle games with an emphasis on music. I had actually never finished a Rhythm Heaven game before but I've played some of the one on Wii and was pretty happy to see a lot of those return here. It's so satisfying to learn the patterns and get perfects in this game. I just wish I was competent enough to get all the Perfects I need to unlock all the extra games. The story ended being way more fun than I expected too, I don't really want to spoil it but the escalation had my clapping and laughing.

65. Pocket Rumble (Switch) - 3/4 (Completed Dec 6, 2018)
Completed All Lessons | Beat Arcade Mode
OjpCnNH.jpg

Another game I absolutely adore but am just no good at. There's isn't a story mode or anything and I had so much trouble with Arcade mode. This is honestly like if Smash's control scheme was thrown into a traditional fighting game format. There's actually an insane amount of depth with each of the characters despite how the game looks. I'm not quite in the generation to be nostalgic for Neo Geo Pocket games but I still found this really charming.

66. Ikaruga (Switch) - 4/4 (Completed Dec 6, 2018)
Completed Arcade Mode
Wq070r0.jpg

Oh, I should have saved that last opening statement for this game because I can't even beat this game without cheating and giving myself infinite lives. I had played this a few times in a vintage arcade but it's nice to finally get through it several times and feel myself getting better at the polarity system over time and beating bosses that I wasn't able to before. Oh and I've been playing this with the amazing Flip Grip, it's so satisfying to play this way in bed.

67. Street Fighter V Arcade Edition + Season 3 (PS4) -3/4 ("Completed" Dec 15, 2018)
Completed All Season 3 Character Stories
LqvMETz.jpg

I wish I could still enjoy Street Fighter V. A large part of my enjoyment of it was playing it in college with a scene but now not many people I know still care to play it either. There's just so much they're doing with Fight Money that's unfair for people that have been there from the beginning, especially in light of the sponsor content. New characters are great choices though, feels a bit late but it's appreciated nonetheless. Season 3 nerfed my boy Rashid, so onward to "Season 4" though right?

68. Dragon Ball FighterZ + Season 1 (PS4) - 4/4 ("Completed" Dec 20, 2018)
Completed Story Mode | 100% Story Mode Collection | 58% Trophies
b34EISh.jpg

FighterZ is so good! Except the meta became a bit stale to watch and it keeps getting dropped from tournaments for some reason. I'm so glad there was a game that brought together all the disparate fighting game communities. I'm still pretty bad at games with a tag system but this game has made me a bit better at really fast combos that you just type out what you want instead of worrying as much about timing. The story was ridiculously long and boring and I can't believe I did all of it. I enjoy all the Season 1 choices but even I kind of think that they should have been in the base roster, it feels really weird that a lot of the big characters in the last arc of Super aren't in this game yet but I get the reasoning behind the timing too. This game also gave me a lot of great moments of people saying this is bad because it's 2D, people rage quitting on me, and fantastic memes all year.

69. Marvel's Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps - Silver Lining (PS4) - 4/4 (Completed Dec 23, 2018)
Completed Story | Amazing Difficulty | 100% Trophies
CQDdQ6W.jpg

Much better than the 2nd DLC but still plagued by repetitiveness. I still think the 1st DLC is the highlight of the bunch but this one actually had nice new setpieces and tied together with the 2nd DLC pretty well. Only problem is the 1st DLC barely mattering in this one so it's not as cohesive of a plot as I would have liked. It's also nice to wrap up the Screwball arc, it's fun enough but I hope the sequel give the spotlight to someone else for challenge missions. The way these DLC have tried to make the game more challenging by just throwing as many enemies as possible at you hasn't been really fun, a few times dying felt really unfair. Despite giving them pretty high scores, I can't recommend this to people who haven't picked up the season pass yet, wait for it to go on sale, there's no rush.

70. Into The Breach (Switch) - 4/4 (Completed Dec 28, 2018)
Beat Final Mission with 2 Corporate Islands | Normal Difficulty | Unlocked All Islands, 5 Squads, 7 Pilots
OyuBN7E.jpg

Bookending my year with a mech game at the beginning and a mech game at the end, couldn't have asked for a better accident. I'm going to be playing a lot more of this game but good god did it kick my butt during the time I played it. This is such a fantastically crafted strategy game, it really forces you to accept your loses and sacrifice the chance to kill enemies so that you can get better positioning to save civilians. I "beat" it on normal but I went back in to mess around on Easy and even one mistake because I wasn't taking it seriously could make me lose a lot of progress. I hadn't played FTL before but I might have to go back and try it now to see the great work these devs have done.

---Final Thoughts---
I can't believe my backlog was this big because I feel I've barely put a dent in it. I'm glad I did this though, the last two years I had been playing more big RPGs and I was getting a burnt out on them and I'd been missing out on a fair amount of fun smaller titles. Oddly enough a few massive RPGs games I need to get to came out this year too, oops. I'm excited to do this again next year, there's still so much in my backlog I said I would play this year that I haven't even touched yet. I'm also excited to find a new voice in how I write because I can feel what I want to write changing. I'm also excited to work on a new (more flexible) banner design! Although Kingdom Hearts III is coming out soon, so uh, we'll see. Thank you everyone that has had to put up with scrolling past my long posts because I keep accumulating finished games and not making posts! I'll try to be better about this in the future; See you all next year!

#75 Yakuza 0 7.5 PS4 - Dec 28th - 30 hours
Loved the writing and story/substories but got tired of the never ending combat after around 20 hours. Mini games didn't hold my attention for too long either but most the stuff in the game is optional so I had fun just going through the story.

#76 Poi 7 PC - Dec 30th - 6.30 hours
100% completed. Poi lacks any ideas of it's own, everything here has already been done in other (mario) platformers, however the controls are excellent, there's a whole lot of stars to collect, nice colourful levels and it was less than £2 on steam. Very much worth if you're a fan of 3D platformers and don't mind a game that is very easy but still fun

And that's me done ✌️

Game 1: Slay the Spire. A fun early access roguelite/deck-building game. A little bit flawed in some areas, some unbalanced enemy encounters that sometimes feel insurmountable due to luck, but I think it will be rectified eventually. Solid game!
Game 2: Death Squared. Played through the Party Mode with two friends.
Game 3: Mom Hid My Game. A short but sweet video game with various "find your game" mini-games.
Game 4. Slayaway Camp: Butcher's Cut. Pretty good :v It's a good puzzle game with a lot of horror tropes and gore.
Game 5: Steven Universe: Save the Light. An actual really, REALLY good game, like legitimately great - except it has some really fucking garbage technical issues that basically killed the game for a lot of people. I was able to get through it with only two hard crashes thank goodness, and neither Earth-shatteringly bad ones.
Game 6: Pic-a-Pix. Decent game, but it's a little bit straightforward tbh!
Game 7: PaRappa the Rapper Remastered. A fun game, liked all but one stage, which if it was the only stage I'd played I would have written this game off as a dumpster fire
Game 8: Half-Life Sven Co-op. Lots of fun! Xen stuff wasn't nearly as bad as I was lead to believe (though it might help that it was multiplayer lol)
Game 9: Castlevania. Haven't beaten this in a long time, and I decided to play it some to kill time when I was hanging out with Alan. Still good at glitches and sequence breaks tho!
Game 10: Magic 2015. Fun, but the CPU is kind of bad lol.
Game 11: Dragon Quest Builders. Second time through from when I played it on the Vita, just as fun as the last time. Surprisingly good story and characters combined with fun gameplay. It does a great job of hitting your building itch.
Game 12: Splatoon 2. Lots of fun. Campaign was really good, and the multi-player is endlessly enjoyable.
Game 13: Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion. It can get a little frustrating, but it's a fun and cool take on Splatoon. It's also a little bit gay, which is nice.
Game 14: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - Donkey Kong Adventure. A lot of fun, great expansion to Mario + Rabbids. They did a pretty cool and unique spin on the gameplay with Donkey Kong's ability to reach high heights easily and to throw allies and enemies.
Game 15: The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+. I've played this for 700 hours and tried to beat it 100% for the first time, and I dun it
Game 16: Dicey Dungeon. Played the free beta version to completion was pretty fun. Had interesting inventory management and the like. Try it out! From the maker of Super Hexagon https://www.terrycavanaghgames.com/dice/9/html5/
Game 17: Celeste. Awesome game! It's really difficult and really emotional with a great visual and audio style.
Game 18: Picross e8. I forgot about this, was working on this earlier and didn't remember to finish lol. I only had like seven puzzles left too, haha. It's aight! It's Picross lol
Game 19: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Beat it on Master Mode! \o/ Still got a lot of stuff to do, including Champions Ballad.
Game 20: Metroid: Samus Returns. It's pretty good, solid debut in the series for Mercury Steam, and it feels like an authentic Metroid game (way more than Other M). On the other hand, it did have some annoying stuff and it felt like it punished backtracking if you did it too early.
Game 21: Art Style: BOXLIFE. Fun game, really simple. Perhaps a bit too simple? Unfortunately you can't get it anymore :c
Game 22: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. I'm finding it a lot more fun than I used to! I managed to get around to beating Classic with everyone finally. Bayonetta was my last.
Game 23: Super Mario Maker. I played a lot of the single-player content, but I never considered it beaten until I uploaded a level. Well, I finally did, and while I'm not in love with the level, I'm glad I made myself do it.
Game 24: WarioWare Gold. Fun game! A lot of repeat contGame
Game 25: Minit. Pretty fun game, though it gets a hair tedious at times. ent from past games, but they go by so quickly and are so well-packaged that it gets away with it.
Game 26: Into the Breach. Super fun game. It's really simplistic yet nonetheless super complex. You never feel like you don't know what's going on. It's a masterclass in strategy games.
Game 27: Picross S2. An okay game of Picross, but the lack of touch controls kind of hurts the experience. It makes it way slower than I'm used to.
Game 28: Minecraft. Went and killed a thing, but mostly I'm here for Creative lol. Also made a fun house.
Game 29: Goosebumps. It was fun, but ultimately very much had a lot of obtuse puzzles. The style was fantastic though.
Game 30: Solitaire: Decked Out. Fun Solitaire game, free, no ads, just microtransactions for cosmetic stuff that you can still get. Only sucky thing is that it uses lootboxes.
Game 31: Wandersong. So good. It's like a mix of Paper Mario, EarthBound, and Undertale. Buy it!!
Game 32: Super Mario Bros. 3. Still as good as it has always been.
Game 33: Donkey Kong. It's okay. Never loved it, but tried to push as far as I could. I did like, 2 and a half runs.
Game 34: Mom Hid My Game. Played this with some friends helping figure out the puzzles and reacting to how ridiculous and stupid it was lol. It did a hell of a lot to help me with my depression and grief. Mom bashing her head through the wall will never not make me laugh.
Game 35: Lara Croft GO. Decent puzzle game, but I much prefer Hitman GO's board game style.
Game 36: Game Dev Story. Fun game, but it feels a bit too simple. It felt by the end that I'd figured things out way too much, though I never achieved GotY.
Game 37: Deltarune Chapter 1. jhfoaejhrg
Game 38: The Witch's House. Was a decent horror game, not as jumpscary as my friend suggested it was. I'm still upset that I had to kill a frog though. My friend owes me $10 for that.
Game 39: Hot Springs Story. Reasonably improved vs. Game Dev Story, feels like I have more control and it's fun to make a cute 'lil hot springs.
Game 40: Sort the Court. Decent flash game, short and a little too simple, but cute.
Game 41: Kemono Friends Picross. Never seen Kemono Friends, but I kind of want to now, haha. I bought it because I had an itch for Picross. A Pitchross I guess? Itchross?
Game 42: Art Style: NEMREM. A cute, intriguing, "artsy" (for lack of a better word) puzzle game. One of the least known of the Art Style brand on DS, and unfortunately, you cannot buy it anymore. :(
Game 43: Qix. Short, but a game I enjoyed playing a lot of as a kid.
Game 44: SPACEPLAN. A cute, short clicker game with a really bonkers ending.
Game 45: A Normal Lost Phone. Was a really pleasant surprise, I was NOT expecting it to take the swerves that it did.
Game 46: Gradius SP. Basically, easy mode Gradius. I was expecting that it would automatically give you all the powerups, even when you die, but it just put you at the third-to-last level with a full suite of powerups that go away if you die. While it was kind of interesting their approach - showing later levels to people who may never have seen them - I think giving them the tools to blast through it would have been better. Plus, it's not like it's easy for a casual player even if you gave them forever-powerups. They'd still die a lot!
Game 47: SteamWorld Dig 2. Very good game, fun to control and explore 'n' shit. Neat enough ending lol
Game 48: The Sexy Brutale. ... OOF. What a game.
Game 49: Florence. Really good interactive narrative game!
Game 50: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Beat the Adventure mode and unlocked all characters. Pretty fun, but ultimately it kind of disappoints with its lack of new stages and its poor music variety.
Game 51: Pixel Puzzle Collection. Fun game (it's Picross so duh), but I cannot stand that the bosses are limited. Makes it a slog to get 100%. As it is, I've beaten everything that doesn't have stupid time locks, so it's beaten.

Here's the stragglers, a few more I quit before seeing the credits, but I'm done with them permanently. There's one game I'm still playing at the moment, if I happen to finish it before the year's up, I'll edit it in.

40. Sonic Rivals (2006, PSP) ★☆☆☆☆ - unfinished
Tries to combine racing with 2D platforming, which isn't the worst idea. Unfortunately the game kind of alternates between playing on auto-pilot and demanding sudden reflexes. It's totally doable, but I found the game very exasperating within minutes. The utterly generic story is told through static images with dialogue balloons. Maybe it suddenly evolves into a great novel past the half-way point, but I was done with this game by world 3. When your options when bored on public transit are "stare into void" or "play Sonic Rivals", and the former is the more appealing option, that says it all, really.

41. Gran Turismo (2009, PSP) No score - unfinished
Bounced off this almost instantly. It looks fantastic on the PSP, and the selection of tracks and cars is impressive. There's even classic tracks like Monaco (albeit differently named) and the Nürburgring here, so I'm sure it's a treat for racing fans. I absolutely hated the handling, though. Back to arcade racing for me.

42. Motorstorm: Arctic Edge (2009, PSP) ★★★☆☆ - unfinished
This one's often recommended when looking through PSP lists, and I can see why. It sells for dirt cheap, yet is easily one of the more impressive racers on the platform. Huge levels, great selection of typical 2008-era electronic music, and theoretically lots of levels with varied challenges to play. There's also a great variety of vehicles, but ironically I found none of them to be 'just right'. Ultimately got bored with this before doing all the campaign challenges, but it's one of the better PSP games I've played.

43. Tetris (1989, GB) ★★★★★
Yup, original Game Boy Tetris, for some reason I'd never played this version. Phenomenal game that had me hooked immediately. Can absolutely see why this became such a cultural phenomenon, the appeal is so wide.

44. V-Rally 3 (2002, GBA) ★★★☆☆
Surprisingly impressive racer on the GBA. The damage effects are rather unnoticeable, nor did the handling feel very different from vehicle to vehicle, and I would argue it's selling point (versus rally) is simultaneously the worst mode. The sound is absolutely awful too. But despite all these complaints, it's impressive visually, establishes a sensation of speed, and is pretty fun to play.

45. Bangai-O Spirits (2008, DS) ★★★☆☆ - unfinished
Second Treasure-developed game I've played this year, and also the second to ever so slightly underwhelm. The original Bangai-O is somewhat frustratingly out of reach, requiring either a Japanese N64 or DreamCast. This game plays really well, there's a solid 250+ levels if you wanna go through everything, lots of little mechanics and options to mess with. Another thing I admire is their method of future-proofing the level sharing; by storing and sharing levels as soundfiles you could theoretically still download new levels to this day, despite DS Wi-Fi services being down for years now. That said, some of levels are infuriatingly difficult, and at some point I lost interest to finish another 80 more of them.

46. Image Fight (1990, Wii U - TG 16 vc) ★★★☆☆
Very tough space shooter, with rather annoying sounds. Plays mostly smooth though, and there's some strategy involved in picking the right speed, as well as which turrets and optional weapons you collect. A cool touch is, when you change ship speeds, you can incinerate foes behind you with the ship's exhaust. I'd recommend the sequel over this one though.

47. Image Fight II: Operation Deepstriker (1992, Wii U - TG 16 CD vc) ★★★★☆
Very impressive sequel, improving on the original in almost every way. More stages, more weapon variants, CD quality music greatly improves the annoying sound, cool dynamic backgrounds. It's still incredibly tough, mind, but if you're not opposed to save scumming your way through, this one comes recommended.

48. Mr. Heli/Mr. HELI no Daibōken/Battle Chopper (1989, Wii U - TG 16 vc) ★★☆☆☆
This one has several names in several regions it seems. Arcade classic in which you control a chopper, dropping bombs and shooting robots down. It's interesting to see it deviate from the strictly horizontal or vertical scrolling traditional shooter template, but ultimately you still don't have a lot of freedom of movement. It's exceedingly difficult in most parts, with some real garbage bossfights accompanied by even more annoying music. The only way through is constantly firing both weapons, and patient save scumming.

49. Star Wars Pinball (2015, Wii U) ★★★☆☆
The Star Wars tables were never added to Zen Pinball 2, but released in this separate game instead, so I'm counting it. All three tables are interesting in their own right. Initially the Boba Fett and Clone Wars themed ones put me off with their garish orange-heavy colour schemes, but they were fun to play once I gave them a fair shot. The game did crash on me once or twice, and ultimately I'm just not good enough at pinball to really enjoy the game long-term, but this is a good title for pick-up and play sessions.

50. Aperion Cyberstorm (2018, Wii U) ★★★☆☆
A well-polished top-down dual-stick shooter. Features a story mode that'll last a good 7-8 hours, 4 different worlds, 5-player local multiplayer even available during the story mode, endless mode, unlockable boss rush, various upgradable ships. This one's very solid, I'm also inclined to go with a rating of four stars here. Music is good too, but there's very little of it there, so this became a mute & podcast game after a while for me. Each room has a different lay-out, forcing different playstyles. The boss fights are a little underwhelming perhaps, and the story is super predictable. If you find dual-stick shooters relaxing, there's a good time to be had here though!

Conclusions: Bit of a mixed year for me. I've managed to try many revered series for a first time (Ridge Racer, PaRappa, Katamari - to mixed results), experienced a good vertical slice of the Wii era (Mario Galaxy, and The Last Story stood out), and a few elusive classics (Panzer Dragoon, the first Sin & Punishment, Bangai-O). Had very few titles blow me away though (only The Last Story, and Mario Kart 8 really).
Final numbers: 40 Games finished, 4 games had no real endings but I'm done with, 6 more I did not finish and won't return to.

Thanks for posting everyone, I enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts and learned about a lot of games I'd never heard of before.

17- Moonlighter - PC - 7/10
The best thing about this game is being a merchant, otherwise i found the combat and dungeon aspect to be dull and boring. Kinda wished it had more to it overall.
18- Bladed Fury - PC - 9/10
One of the best games i've played this year. The art is simply amazing and the combat is fast and responsive. It felt rushed at the end and most of the skills was damage increase but it was overall a really good game with a unique story.
19- Stories: The Path of Destinies - PS4 - 6.5/10
I liked it, but it get really repetitive after a while. The whole idea behind uncovering the truth after each playthrough is cool. The combat was kinda slow for my taste, or maybe too slow for a game that asks you to play through it at least 5 times.
20- Lethal League Blaze - PC - 10/10
THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER. Seriously, hitting your opponent with the ball at a high speed is very satisfying. It has different game modes too and a unique art style. I fucking love it
Next: Devil May Cry 3 HD

This is the last update for this thread probably. Although i failed to reach 52 games, i've finished 20 in only 3 month which is very good. I feel like i've finally got back into gaming after a long break due to personal issues and i've got to say, i've missed a lot of great games. My backlog is through the roof. It's a great time for video games and i can't help but feel excited for the future.

My final update for the year.

Main Post

December

48: Spiderman - 20 hours
h6NFcEn.png

Swinging around a believable version of Manhattan is one of my favorite moments in gaming this year, and it was shocking how well the mechanic works. I really enjoyed the story in this too, which felt well-done and relatable instead of just feeling like another Spiderman story. On the negative side, I didn't like the combat much, and there is *way* too much of it. The amount of side content that boiled down to defeating groups or waves of enemies was already overwhelming before being doubled at a point later in the game. I think it's telling that my favorite side content in the game was the "Capture the Pigeons" tasks. When I originally got the Mission I was having GTA4 flash-backs of awful collectathons for achievements, but web-swinging around the city in a race to follow and capture a bird was the game leaning into the best and most fun mechanics in it. In most ways Spiderman feels like an exceptionally well-made Open World game, but is a style of that game that I feel like I've moved past.

49: Lost Winds 2: Winter of the Melodias - 3 hours
X2TyCSp.png

This didn't feel like a big improvement over the original which I played earlier this year. It's a bit briefer and the mechanics they add don't feel like they work out as well as the gestures and abilities from the first game. The addition of the cold weather and the few sections in the game where you have to worry about staying warm and not venturing too far from heat sources are also not fun.
6/10

50: Mega Man 11 - 6 hours
BYNoXw5.png

I've been playing Megman games since the original back on NES and this is one of the few I've actually finished. Normally I just get to Wily's gauntlet and get tired of having to redo early stages to work on the final ones. Megaman 11 has a lot of smart accessibility options that make this sort of scenario a non-issue, including several expanded difficulty modes and an item-shop that lets you give yourself boosts (like extra lives or an auto-charging blaster) if you want a leg-up. I preferred the retro visuals of 9 & 10 at first, but I will say that all the weapons in 11 look and feel great. They all have a unique identify, have big colorful & powerful looking effects, and are all useful even in regular missions which I feel like is not the case for most weapons in the older games. The new double-gear system is smart in that it lets you slow down time to better learn or avoid attacks, or just boost your attack damage, from a shared recharging resource pool. It feels like it is both opening the game up to a more expanded audience and allowing them to learn while also adding some depth for the crowd who is already used to and skilled at Megaman games. I'm glad that they're still making Megaman games and still trying new things.

51: Professor Layton and the Curious Village HD - 8 hours
Awwq9mz.png

This is technically a replay since I played the original DS version 10 years ago. My memory of the game was that it had a much greater emphasis on puzzles than side-activities compared to subsequent Layton games, and that the puzzles were more genuine. Fewer trick questions and misleading puzzles, basically. My theory was always that they burned through most of the classic historical puzzles in Curious village and that subsequent games had to struggle to pad out the puzzle numbers and add more side activities. I think that ended up still feeling true here, but there were more trick questions and straight-faced math problems than I remembered. The HD mobile remake does a great job retaining the visual style of the original game and everything looks much better & sharper than before, especially on a big iPad. I'm happy to saw that the game still holds up really well and that this still feels like the best game in the series.
8/10

52: Valkyria Chronicles 4 - 34 hours
8JTozml.png

I loved Valkyria Chronicles 1 when it came out 10 years ago and it was one of my favorite games that year despite all the other huge classic games that released alongside it. It had beautiful and unique stylized visuals, simple but fun combat, and a big emphasis on stories and characters. I was sad when the sequels were relegated to portable platforms and abandoned a lot of the story and visual elements that made me a fan of the original. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is finally a true sequel to the original but it doesn't feel like the game has moved forward much in the 10 years that have passed, and it definitely feels dated in a lot of ways. The combat feels clunky and unresponsive, with your characters frequently being interrupted as you try to go into aim-mode and taking return-fire that doesn't feel earned. The turning on tanks works poorly and you end up wasting a lot of AP (stamina) just trying to get them to turn or move in the right direction. The addition of the Grenadier class feels like a negative overall, as they are annoying to fight against, cause a lot of camera issues when you are using them, and lead to a lot of situations where your character is rag-dolled by a mortar shot while you are running, interrupting you yet again. The visuals do look pretty great, but the northern setting with ice & snow that the game quickly moves to is much less interesting and fun to look at than the colorful country-sides and cities of the original. I liked the story and the characters overall, though the Villians are written really poorly and the way the story is told, small series of cut-scenes that dump you out to a menu in-between each, is another way that the game feels dated. I'm really glad I got to play another Valkyria Chronicles game but after playing 4 I'm not sure that this is a series that needs to continue.
7/10

And with that, I am done for the year. Just by the skin of my teeth too. I had fun participating in the challenge again this year and using games as a way to stay sane given everything that is happening in the world.

I think my biggest take-away from 2018 for games is that it has strengthened in my mind just how good 2017 was. I played a lot of amazing games last year and even the stuff I didn't get around to and ended up playing this year instead, like The Evil Within 2, What Remains of Edith Finch, Assassin's Creed Origins, Steamworld Dig 2, etc. still blew me away and ended up being some of my favorite games that I played this year.

100. Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst / 7h40 - completed 31.12.18

1511474779-1150836840.jpg

A HO game to round up the year. This is probably fine on the PC but it's nearly unplayable on the 3DS at times. Some of the puzzles are literally unreadable and i had to use a walkthrough to fumble past them. Apart from that, it's a pretty basic example of the genre, with nothing much to recommend it. Meh.

I even threw together a gallery of sorts for the years completions between wrapping up Red Dead 2 and celebrating Xmas.

For anyone who beat the challenge but has yet to update their post/DM me for Hall of Fame™ status, no rush if you're enjoying the festivities, I'll be continuing to update the list as the completions come in. :)

For folks eager to kick off the challenge anew I'll be starting the 2019 thread on January 1st, so have those post making fingers at the ready and I'll see you in the new year!

I'm probably done for the year, so here's my last batch. Main Post is here

53) The Quiet Man: Answered (PlayStation 4)
Day Finished: 11/8
Score: 1/10

It's the exact same game as The Quiet Man but with sound now. Somehow doesn't make it any less shitty.

54) Battlefield 1 (PlayStation 4)
Day Finished: 11/15
Score: ???

I convinced myself I needed to finish this game's single player campaign before Battlefield V came out. I don't know why. It's okay, but the multiplayer is where it's at.

55) The World Ends With You: Final Remix (Nintendo Switch)
Day Finished: 11/23
Score: 7.5/10

An iffy port of an excellent game. Play the DS version instead unless you can't.

56) Arca's Path (PlayStation VR)
Day Finished: 11/28
Score: 8.5/10

A really neat VR version of Marble Madness. Great for VR newbies, but also good enough for vets.

57) Storm Boy: The Game (PlayStation 4)
Day Finished: 11/29
Score: 5/10

A cute little adaption of the book, but not much fun to play and only too me about 20 minutes to finished with another 10 to get the platinum trophy.

58) Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PlayStation 4)
Day Finished: 12/4
Score: 8/10

I had a ton of trouble with the last boss. Otherwise, a real fun entry into the series.

59) Gungrave VR (PlayStation VR)
Day Finished: 12/9
Score: 2.5/10

In its 30 minute run time it manages to do nearly every VR sin in the book. Plus its super boring.

60) RollerCoaster Tycoon Joyride (PlayStation 4)
Day Finished: 12/15
Score: 1/10

This game is actual hell, fuck everything.

61) The Council (PlayStation 4)
Day Finished: 12/25
Score: 5/10

Episodic narrative adventure game with some RPG elements. Started real strong, but each episode seemed to get worse until it limped over the finish line.

Interesting divide for me. I've changed industries and started working as a writer in a digital marketing agency in August, after working 1.5 years as a pro-gaming journalist. It looks like I've played less indie games after the switch. To be honest, I am so glad that I've made the switch, gaming journalism is a fucking shitshow in my country.

These are the games I've finished and reviewed. But there are tons of games in the first half that I've "touched":

1- Shadow of the Colossus
2- Total War: Warhammer 2 – Rise of the Tomb Kings
3- Warhammer: Vermintide 2
4- Far Cry 5
5- The Station
6- Frostpunk
7- God of War
8- Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia
9- State of Decay 2
10- Detroit: Become Human
11- Vampyr
12- Prey: Mooncrash
13- The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
14- The Crew 2

---switch---

15- Shadows: Awakening
16- Marvel's Spider-Man
17- Shadow of the Tomb Raider
18- Assassin's Creed Odyssey
19- Hitman 2
20- Darksiders III
21- Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden
22- Call of Cthulu (might finish it today)

Sneaked in a few more games before the new year.

OP

Game 56 - Alone in the Dark: Inferno (PS3) - ~10 hours

It was pretty ambitious (this felt like an earlier attempt at what Silent Hill: Downpour or The Evil Within 2 went for) but everything about this was pretty clunky, if not flat out bad. Keep in mind this is said after playing the enhanced (not sure what was changed) PS3 version so I can't imagine what this was like on PS2/Wii/360.

Game 57 - Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World (3DS) - 11 hours, 57 minutes

It was really cute but it kinda lost steam for me about halfway through and started to drag near the end. Most platformers seem to have that issue for me so it wasn't something unique to this game.

Loved the Yoshi variants.

Game 58 - 428: Shibuya Scramble (PS4) - 43 hours, 3 minutes

What a game to go out with. I don't play many visual novels but I was really taken back by how substantial this was length/content wise. This playtime was with a bit of walkthrough reading (because let's be real some of those ending requirements were obscure and I don't have the patience for that lmao) but even still it was a lot. Really loved the cast of this (even the characters I didn't like at first, I mostly came around to) and am already experiencing a bit of sadness that the game is over. Would definitely love to see more like this.

I didn't manage to finish 52 games this year. Still, this challenge pushed me to complete more games than I have in probably the last few years put together, so I'm super happy about that. Excited to try again in 2019!

Master Post
hltb profile

continued from October, standing at 36 games

October (remaining)

37.) Watch_Dogs (Playstation 4, 21 October)
Watch_Dogs encapsulated what many people have called 'next-gen' when it was first staged at E3. The game could never live up to the hype. Many years later I finally visited this universe and found a surprising number of great gameplay ideas that should be used more often. Toying around with hacking the whole city is great fun, as is the diversity of missions and little silly games in Watch_Dogs. I heard Watch Dogs 2 has quite a different tone, so I'll be happy to find out about it in 2019!
8/10

38.) Detention (Nintendo Switch, 31 October)
As a China and Taiwan scholar, I'm very happy more people get in contact with Taiwan's authoritarian past. A game is a great way to arise interest in a topic you don't normally come across. It's also presented in a creepy way and forces the player to find solutions in adventure-style puzzles. Perfect halloween game, too!
8,5/10

November

39.) Red Dead Redemption 2 (Xbox One X, 14 November)

While a game like RDR2 will never be able to surpass the experience of a deep RPG with choices and impactful consequences for me, Rockstar has delivered a close to perfect open world action game in the Western setting.
9/10

40.) The World Ends With You (Mobile, 25 November)
Square-Enix still got it in them! TWEWY is such a fresh take on the JRPG, especially when it comes to contemporary urban settings. The battles were so much fun, many game mechanics felt unique, the story around Neku was super captivating and you wouldn't know until the very end how things pan out.
9/10

December

41.) LIMBO (Xbox One X, 1 December)
LIMBO was one of the first big indies in the famous 'Summer or Arcade'. How fitting to play LIMBO close before the 'Winter of Arcade' that has brought us Subnautica, Ashen, Mutant Year Zero and Below among other games! LIMBO is still a short, albeit great experience.
8/10

42.) Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance (Playstation 4, 12 December)
No kidding, people on here were very right that you need to play DDD to understand what will be going on in KH3. Also, the spoilers to TWEWY meant I had to play a lot to catch up on time for the new KH3 in January. I'm doing a PhD and playing through KH kinda feels like it, too :D DDD itself has a few neat concepts and is very stylish. You play as Riku and Sora. The trials master Yen Sid prepared for them doesn't go as planned. The end bosses was very tough though (side note: has there ever been a JRPG without multiple end bosses?!).
8,5/10

43.) Kingdom Hearts 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage (Playstation 4, 14 December)
A glimpse of how Kingdom Hearts 3 will feel to play, we follow Aqua's path in the underworld. The events of 0.2 will directly lead into KH3, so go and play it.
7,5/10

44.) Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Xbox 360, 16 December)
The recent graphical upgrades (or should I say the free remaster) on Xbox One X led me to finally play FF XIII-2 many years after the first game. I honestly believe this game to be an underrated gem of the series. It got time travel, Pokémon-style monster collecting, a compelling story, a great soundtrack, the fast-paced paradigm battle system and two nice protagonists. Don't miss out on this game, and best play it on Xbox One X!
8,5/10

45.) Mass Effect: Bring Down the Sky DLC (Xbox 360, 28 December)
In 2019 I wanted to finally approach Mass Effect: Andromeda. Completing the original Mass Effect trilogy in 2014, I had never played the DLC content and decided to change that prior to playing the new game. This DLC introduced the species of the Batarians. It's in many ways a typical early DLC product that feels like cut out from the base game. The quest was decent enough but not great.
6/10

46.) Mass Effect 2: Kasumi DLC (Xbox 360, 28 December)
ME2 has DLC on a whole different level from ME1. While I'm not a big fan of hiding additional characters behind paywalls, Kasumi's background is fascinating and the quest itself also plays out pretty great.
7,5/10

47.) Mass Effect 2: Overlord DLC (Xbox 360, 28 December)
Overlord represents the human attempt to play god and combine organical and synthetic life. The DLC doesn't add a whole lot to the overall story, but still plays really well. It also got probably the best bossfight in the whole game and always continues to surprise.
7,5/10

48.) Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC (Xbox 360, 29 December)
Revealing the location and identity of the Shadow Broker is a lot of fun! Some of the best space scenes in the whole trilogy are also part of the experience, and the DLC also explains the role of certain characters in ME3.
9/10

49.) Mass Effect 2: Arrival DLC (Xbox 360, 29 December)
Arrival is a pretty tough DLC as you have to play solo for most of it. While your actions are a direct prequel for ME3, I cannot say anything about the DLC left me baffling.
7,5/10

50.) Bayonetta (Xbox 360, 29 December)
Why the hell haven't I played Bayonetta earlier? Stupid me. This game has got everything. It's flashy, it's brilliant, it's difficult, it's over the top, it's awesome, it's... Need to stop here! Oh, one more thing: GO AND PLAY BAYONETTA! And crazillo, go and play Bayonetta 2!
9/10

51.) Kingdom Hearts χ (Mobile, 30 December)
I want to be fully prepared for Kingdom Hearts 3 in January. The prequels add another layer of complexity in an already convuluted storyline. Good to know nevertheless. The game behind didn't sell on me and was only available in Japan anyways.
6/10

52.) Mass Effect 3: From the Ashes DLC (Xbox 360, 30 December)
A great part of the mystery about the Protheans is finally in parts resolved in this DLC. Also adds another member to your squad. A short experience, too.
7/10

53.) Mass Effect 3: Leviathan DLC (Xbox 360, 31 December)
Wow, this DLC feels like Sherlock Holmes in space. Puzzling together information from a assassinated scientist, Shepard tries to find the Leviathan that he wants to get help from to defeat the Reaper. Leviathan constantly improves as it goes on, with a great finale! Must-play. Some DLC remain for 2019.
9/10

Additional, not counting

Kingdom Hearts χ Backcover (movie from the KH HD 2.8 collection, Playstation 4, 30 December)

Kingdom Hearts Union χ (ongoing, played as far as possible, Android, 30 December)

----

I did it! Many long RPGs, some short episodes, which kinda make the 52 a longer or shorter 52 depending on what you play. I'm super satisfied and happy. Aiming to repeat this challenge in 2019! Also finished the year with a positive backlog.

Wozzer's gallery is amazing!

I vote for headstart. It's a common and very useful tactic ;)
I didn't in the end :D

Well. Didn't work out for me this year but I already plan my January holidays to play something. Too bad it won't work out probably, but here's to 2019.
See ya next year :P

Here's my 53 for 2018! Next year I'm definitely writing these up as I go.

1. Rebel Galaxy (Feb. 01)
It's not an overly complex space sim, and despite taking place on a single plane it doesn't feel overly limited, either. I continued to really enjoy the "scum and villainy" cowboy privateer vibe, even (many) hours in.

2. Bionic Commando (NES) (Feb. 13)
One of my all-time favourite games - why jump when you can swing?

3. Bionic Commando (Game Boy) (Feb. 20)
An adaptation of the NES game, but with changes to many levels and the overall aesthetic. The swinging still feels great, and the game's still a whole lot of fun, even directly after the first.

4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Feb. 27)

Another all-time favourite. I mainly picked this up again to get re-familiarized enough with the world enough to play the randomizer mod, but it never takes much of an excuse for a re-play.

5. Bionic Commando Elite Forces (Mar. 01)
I liked it more than I thought I would after a bad initial impression and enjoyed playing through it, but I don't love it like the first two games in the series. It feels "off" a little in just about every aspect.

6. A Link to the Past Randomizer (Several completions, only adding the one entry for all) (Mar. 10)
Like an endless supply of Second Quests for A Link to the Past. The randomizer has a sizeable number of difficulty settings, modes, tweaks (player sprite changes!), and statistic tracking to keep it entertaining - fantastic work by those modders and something that I'll be returning to often.

7. Battleblock Theater (Mar. 13)
I came for the Stamper narration, but stayed for the platforming - I really didn't think I'd be so impressed by the part that initially seemed the most generic. Also it's pretty much Super Mario Maker, years before that was released.

8. Mad Max (Apr. 11)
Huge and teeming with lunacy, Avalanche did a great job translating the post-apolcalyptic world of Mad Max to an open-world game. I really loved the focus on hand-to-hand and vehicle combat over gunplay.

9. Organ Trail: Director's Cut (Apr. 19)
Oregon Trail in the zombie apocalypse, for the uninitiated. The expansion adds a ton of new events and content to the game, which I already enjoyed a whole lot.

10. Steamworld Dig 2 (Apr. 27)
Improves on the mining and upgrading loop of the first game, which was already great. Definitely one of my favourite Metroivanias!

11. Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight (May 04)
Beautiful and weird, Momodora, Reverie is my clear favourite in an already great series of platformers.

12. High Hell (May 08)
An absurdly fast, punishing, and fun shooter - it reminded me a lot of Hotline Miami, with its demand for quick reaction and precision. Great soundtrack by Doseone. I enjoyed it a whole lot.

13. Rockman X (May 13)
Another replay of a favourite. X expands lot of the player abilities - movement being the thing about it that really grabs me, the ability to dash and wall jump making the game feel more dynamic and fun.

14. LOVE (May 26)

A challenging platformer that never feels like punishment. Not long but quite good!

15. Code Name: Viper (Jun. 17)
A Rolling Thunder homage that I ended up liking a whole lot. Easy difficulty is not actually easy.
Fun fact: Developed for Capcom by Arc System Works, who also previously developed the Famicom version of Rolling Thunder for Namco.

16. Super Mario Land (Jul. 01)
I forgive you, Super Mario Land. We're still friends.

17. Donkey Kong '94 (Jul. 20)
If you thought Donkey Kong looped after the fourth level you have a shameful gap in your historical knowledge. Legally and canonically the greatest Donkey Kong game.

18. Doom 2 (Aug. 12)
Doom's larger, weirder younger sibling. It has a lot of really ambitious level design that both elevates and hinders it, I think. A little too much time spent hunting down possibly-too-well-hidden keys and entrances in gigantic maze-like levels. Still a fantastic game in my opinion!

19. WarioWare Inc. Mega Microgames (Aug. 29)
I love every bit of the original WarioWare - style, music, and games. Easily one of my favourite GBA titles.

20. Mega Man 4 (Sep. 25)
There are Mega Man games after 3 on the NES! And they're good! The robot masters are getting a bit ludicrous, but it's still very much Mega Man (it loves you but it has to hurt you a little bit). Excellent.

21. Princess Remedy In A Heap Of Trouble (Oct. 08)
I really enjoyed the first free game in the series, and Ludosity's style of humour, which continues fluently in the sequel. It isn't long, but I enjoyed what was there!

22. Scrap Garden: The Day Before (Oct. 09)
I didn't like this much at all. The idea's not bad, a puzzle-platforming world full of cute antropomorphized robots, but the puzzles weren't very interesting, the platforming is kind of bad and the combat is even worse. It ended my plan to move on to the full game (it's a free prequel chapter).

23. Small Radios Big Televisions (Oct. 11)
A very abstract adventure/exploration/puzzle game, not entirely unlike Myst, but with cassette tapes instead of books. I'm still pretty confused about what actually went on, though.

24. Red Trigger (Oct. 12)
A free FPS puzzle platforming game - it only took about an hour to finish, but was quite good. Had a bit of a Tron vibe to it, which I always enjoy.

25. Transmissions: Element 120 (Oct. 15)
A free-to-play fan-written chapter for Half-Life 2 (think Lost Coast), which was fun enough to play through multiple times to complete all the achievements.

26. Wolfenstein 3D (Oct. 18)
I never thought I'd play through Wolf3D again, but the simplicity along with the source-port's (ECWolf) built-in mapping kept it comfortable through all six chapters. Without that feature I'm pretty sure I would've given up, though.

27. 8Bit Killer (Oct. 25)
Locomalito's take on the Wolfenstein 3D-style maze-FPS. Short, but good dumb fun while it lasts. Good NES-inspired art, great NES-inspired music.

28. Stories Untold (Oct. 31)
Its four vignettes are short, but are diverse, tense, and well-written. I enjoyed it - a great Halloween playthrough.

29. Zenge (Nov. 03)
I couldn't explain the plot (revealed in images created through the puzzles), but the shape-manipulating puzzle gameplay was satisfying enough to keep me moving through the game. Great while it lasted, and certainly for the price

30. klocki (Nov. 05)
A deceptively simple and somewhat more traditional abstract puzzle game. Also not long, but interesting and challenging all the way through.

31. Eversion (Nov. 06)
I'd finished this before, but I'd never put in the work to see all the weird endings and get all the achievements. Very basic platforming, but the "everting" mechanic is a neat twist

32. Grapple (Nov. 08)
A few years old now, but some of the best gaming fun I had in 2018. A physics platformer - you're a blob, you can stick to surfaces and grapple and swing by extending part of your blob body while airborne.

33. GUN GODZ (Nov. 10)
This is what happens when the rap game goes intergalactic. Simple (it's like Wolfenstein 3D), violent, fun. Great soundtrack.

34. Return. (Nov. 13)
It's extremely short and there's not a lot to it - just a cute, well-made, slightly ominous forced scrolling platformer with a low barrier to entry (it's free) that's difficult to love or hate.

35. VVVVVV (Nov. 16)
I'm still proud I made it through "Doing things the hard way" without giving up.

36. Subsurface Circular (Nov. 18)
It's a mystery that takes place entirely through the conversations of sentient robots on a subway train as you gather information. It's very well written, managing to convey so much about the characters and the game's overall world through the short but intricate conversations.

37. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nov. 19)
Mario! Mario! Mario!

28. River City Ransom (Nov. 22)
Kick two guys until you can afford new boots with their dropped pocket change so you can kick them better for more pocket change. A++ would kick again.

39. Glass Masquerade (Nov. 26)
Lovely and relaxing, reassembling stained glass clocks in all the worlds' nations is a glorious thing

40. Tiny Echo (Nov. 28)
A short, fairly abstact adventure game, it manages to convey a lot of feeling through the characters, even if the detail is mostly cryptic. I liked it a lot

41. Jumping Flash! (Nov. 29)
Jumping Flash! really nailed first-person platforming in the mid-90s, making huge jumps onto tiny floating islands fun and functional. The whimsical, Japanese-weird design was great to revisit.

42. Jumping Flash! 2 (Nov. 30)
Everything that made Jumping Flash! great is done just a little better here. Very similar, as sequels go, but excellent nonetheless.

43. Kirby's Dream Land (Dec. 02)

This is one I'd never gotten the chance to play through as a kid. Short, but a lot of fun - I never realized that Kirby didn't start out as the soul-consuming monster he is today, eating everyone out of simple heroic gluttony.

44. Gargoyle's Quest (Dec. 03)
More nostalgia! A bit of an odd combination of JRPG and platformer, with overworld exploration and random battles and trading souls for extra lives and such. Not a bad game at all, even if a little outmoded and weird.

45. Power Hover (Dec. 05)

A weird combination of calming and stressful, coasting serenely through the jagged nightmare zones of post-human industry. I had a lot of fun with this.

46. Donkey Kong Country (Dec. 07)
I actually owned this as a kid, but never played through much of it - it always felt like a poor facsimile of Super Mario World with more missing than improved upon. I'm glad I stuck with it this time around. It's not perfect, and some of the levels feel a little cruel, but I did largely have a good time with it.

47. The Lost Vikings (Genesis version) (Dec. 12)

I've always really liked The Lost Vikings' brand of puzzle platforming, but I'd never been able to get myself to stick with it all the way through. It's a little on the grueling side in the later levels, where the difficulty is high and you're forced to start all over again after any mistake. Probably a game best played in shorter bursts, but a lot of fun.

48. Rygar (NES) (Dec. 13)

A childhood favourite that I'd never actually completed until now, and still manages to remain great in my mind after properly finding my way through it.

49. Kirby's Adventure (Dec. 17)
I'd always thought this was just an NES version of Kirby's Dream Land, but it's much more than that - a bit of a technical marvel on top of being a much bigger adventure than its Game Boy predecessor. Also where the whole Kirby is what he eats thing was first established.

50. Crash Bandicoot (Original Playstation version) (Dec. 21)
Another game I'd discounted when I was younger due to an unfair comparison to a similar title. It's actually quite a great platformer by its own merit, with a lot of interesting, varied levels and impressive animation.

51. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (Dec. 22)
It probably goes deeper into the Mortal Kombat lore than any other game in the series, and has a ton of little details for fans, along with the huge volume of unlockable secret stuff. The camera feels a bit like an enemy you have to fight for the entire game, though, and a few sections are suddenly and painfully difficult. Overall quite good

52. Octodad: Dadliest Catch (Dec. 25)
One of those games where the designed frustration of controlling your character is the main villain of the game, but a lot of care seems to have been taken to prevent players from being stuck on any given task for more than a few minutes. Weird and cute and generally fun - except for those times that it's not, but those times don't last very long!

53. ICO (PS2) (Dec. 28)
ICO is a slow and atmospheric game. The huge environments along with occasionally bad camera angles made some areas and puzzles more tedious than they needed to be, but that scale is also what made ICO feel so grand and lonely. The combat was not very fun, but fighting to protect Yorda still felt important, lest you lose your only friend. Affecting, which made up for a lot of the shortcomings. Very much makes me want to play through the PS4 remake sometime.

Gameplay - 8.2 | Variety of skill levels across a decent number of songs. Nice seeing characters in today's graphics.
Sound - 9 | It takes the best tracks and it gives them a new life
Story/Online - 7 | Pretty generic. Some social links are okay but overall don't buy for the story
Asking Price- 7.33 | If you can find the collectors (all three) for a decent price I think its well worth it. Not worth $60 each

#62: Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight (12/8/2018 ) | 7/10 | PS4 | ~ 8 Hours | Recommend: M
# Overall - 7 | I enjoy P5 both game and songs more than P3 but found myself liking P3 Dancing more
Gameplay - 8.2 | Same setup as P3, variety of skill levels across a decent number of tracks
Sound - 9 | Takes P5 great music and mixes it up a bit

182185.jpg

#63: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (Date) | 8/10 | 3DS XL | ~ 11 Hours | Recommend: Y
# Overall - 8 | A ton of songs, taking the best over its 30 year history to play and listen along too.
Gameplay - 8.2| A few different gameplay styles mixed across a few modes.
Sound - 9 | Dev's did a great job getting as many tracks as they did on one cartridge
Story/Online - 7 | Barebones, you play for the songs
Asking Price- 9.33 | Crazy amount of songs, game will keep you busy for a while. They do start to all blend together if you are playing in longer burst.

super-smash-bros-ultimate.png

#64: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (12/31/2018 ) | 9/10 | Switch | ~ 30.5 Hours | Recommend: Y
# Overall - 9 | Picked it up for an occasional fun party game, stayed for the giant single player Adventure mode.
Gameplay - 9.4 | Smash looks better than ever with modes to please everyones interest.
Sound - 10 | With the robust roster of characters the game brings the best tracks from those games with them.
Story/Online - 7 | Not much of one but some cool CGI moments!
Asking Price- 10| With 30.5 hours just in Adventure mode, Classic Mode, Smash and Online are still begging for attention

134. The Navigator (free game)

Well this was a short game. You play as a navigator who uses roped anchor to hook onto planetoids and must use the anchor in order to reach a swirl in order to complete the stage.
It's not a very lengthy game, beatable in under an hour at best, but it was a nice relaxing experience for the most part.

135. Momodora 3
https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steam/apps/302790/header.jpg?t=1447361971[/im]
Beat the game on Easy. This is a 2D action adventure game that's on the short side and can be beaten in an hour or two. On Hard the game is rather challenging due to your low health but it is a simple game to figure out and has a few secrets to unlock during a playthrough.

Final transmission:

37. Narcosis (Steam, 2018/12/05, 3.8 hours)

Deep sea survival horror is the name of the game. Narcosis offers a pretty neat way of telling its story, a tale of isolation, despair and pressure. The player is locked into a walking coffin, trying to escape pending death, subjected to hallucination episodes, paranoia and then THAT ending. VR really amplified everything to the point, that I had to take breaks because it was becoming too much. Amazing atmosphere, narration carried the path finding gameplay and a few not too tricky puzzles. Narcosis is a remarkable experience.

38. AKA TO BLUE (Android, 2018/12/11, 6-8 hours)

This mobile bullet hell SHMUP with touch controls was made by ex CAVE staff. That's enough to pique my interest and justified so. The production value is top notch. Great UI design, visual and audio queues for the important elements. The game even features a story subplot, which is very chatty, accompanies the action and wraps up with a manga epilogue. The core gameplay is freakishly well tuned. You can play the game really sloppy, technically or down right cheesy. No matter your preferred style, it always feels very satisfying and fun. I hate touch controls for precise movements, got used to it, but still prefer traditional inputs. Amazing game and I'm very glad to have it in my pocket at all times.

39. Swarmlake (Steam, 2018/12/29, 20 hours)

It's you against a swarm of 10000 in this minimalism first person shooter. The goal is to survive as long as possible while scoring as much as possible. The rampant spawn rate quickly confronts the player with a hurricane of death with little wiggle room. Swarmlake is the most fun in the first minutes, when you can still dive, take risks and somewhat crowd control. I've 100% the game and the last cheevo, scoring 10000 points, wasn't fun. The survival options are limited and scoring high is a chore. The show put on display is spectacular though. It's a technical marvel to see the swarm in motion. Everything is well optimized, downsampling works, FOV up to 120 and close to perfect frame pacing.

My overview is in this post. I didn't made it to 52 this year, a few longer games soaked up a lot of my play time and that's okay. Congrats to all who made it and those who tried. Playing your games and having fun is what counts. See you all in 2019.

Well golly gee guess who slacked off doing updates on this website for 9 months? It's a me! YAHOO!

Game 9: Mega Man 2 (PS4) | ~3 Hours | 03/03/2018 | 8/10
Never knew how much Mega Man 2 improved over its predecessor. Uneven level design leads to easy robot master levels that don't prepare you for the horrors of the wily gauntlet. Music is top notch, very much deserves its reputation.

Game 10: Mega Man 3 (PS4) | ~6 Hours | 03/12/2018 | 8/10
Hey look it's Mega Man 2 but with less uneven level design but with worse music. I'd probably hate Mega Man 3 more if I wasn't playing a version with a save state feature.

Game 11: Kirby Star Allies (Switch) | 8 Hours | 03/19/2018 | 7/10
It's a real ass Kirby game alright. While the friend gimmick has its charms, it leads to gameplay generally being worse than usual. It's full AAA game price while Robobot can be found for much less does not help its case here.

Game 12: Octogeddon (PC) | 7 Hours | 03/25/2018 | 8/10
One of the most unique games I've played in a while. It's made by a studio helmed by the creator of Plants vs Zombies and it shows that on all fronts. Simple, charming, highly entertaining.

Game 13: Life is Strange: Before the Storm (PS4) | 11 Hours | 03/28/2018 | 9/10
While making a prequel can have issues, Before the Storm works incredibly well. As someone who didn't have much of a strong opinion on Chloe in the first game, she's incredibly likable here. The game is worth it for the backtalking mechanic alone.

Game 14: Way of the Passive Fist (PS4) | 6 Hours | 03/28/2018 | 7/10
A fun take on the beat-em-up genre. 'Damage' is mainly inflicted by wearing out enemies by rhytmically parrying their attacks. Features difficulty sliders for different parts of the game so you can customize your experience to a large degree

Game 15: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones Randomizer (Android) | ~14 Hours | 04/16/2018 | 8/10
A romhack of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones that randomizes anything from character classes to chest items. Unlike other randomizer hacks, it's all done ingame rather than through patching. Great Lord Vanessa and Colossus Innes was a power couple for the ages.

Game 16: God of War (PS4) | ~37 Hours | 04/27/2018 | 9/10
For an IP that was as beaten into the ground as God of War was, this 'reboot' really does reinvent itself in a way that makes me excited for the future of the franchise. The game looks great, the combat and level design are really good, the story and how they handled Kratos I thought was done really well. A great game all around.

Game 17: [Replay] Valkyria Chronicles (PC) | ~20 Hours | 04/30/2018 | 10/10
I had a PC save that I started when it was first ported that I never finished, so I decided to do so while waiting for Valkyria Chronicles 4 to come out. Even did those Edy Squad missions for the first time, too.

Game 18: Fe (PS4) | ~5 Hours | 05/02/2018 | 7/10
Charming 3D platformer with a distinct visual style. While nothing about it was exceptional, it was a fun time.

Game 19: Iconoclasts (Vita) | 11 Hours | 05/07/2018 | 7/10
Decent little metroidvania. Gameplay is solid with the boss fights being the standout part of the game. Questionable decisions made in the back half of the story caused me to lost a bit of favour with the game.

Game 20: Cosmic Star Heroine (PC) | 12 Hours | 05/15/2018 | 8/10
Had this in the backlog and wanted to see if it was worth double dipping on for its physical release, and it took me by surprise how good the game is. The amount of characters and the variety between them are pretty great, the combat system is really well done, and the runtime at a solid 12 hours for 100% achievements made the game pretty much all killer and no filler.

Game 21: Celeste (PS4) | 6 Hours | 05/16/2018 | 9/10
I was initally skeptical of Celeste due to it being a Super Meat Boy kind of game, but the gameplay, music and story really won me over in the end. I even beat the game within a game gimmick because I was having so much fun.

Game 22: [Replay] Jak X: Combat Racing (PS2) | 11 Hours | 05/19/2018 | 8/10
I had all the Jak games downloaded only my PS4 and decided to revisit this one because I hadn't played it for the longest time. It's a pretty great game, playing fast and loose in more than one way. It's egregiously edgy though; if Shadow the Hedgehog didn't exist the Jak series post Jak 2 would be the poster boy for edge.

Game 23: Shank (PC) | 2 Hours | 05/23/2018 | 7/10
I played and really liked Shank 2 years ago, so I decided to give the first game a spin after having it sit in my backlog for years. It's a fun beat-em-up, the sequel definitely improve things however.

Game 24: Dude, Stop (PC) | 4 Hours | 06/02/2018 | 6/10
Weird PC game I found through Steam Queues I think. Your job in the game is to find new and inventive ways to annoy the narrator of the game by intentionally doing tasks given to you incorrectly. Not the best thing I ever played, but it's cute enough.

Game 25: Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (PC) | 2 Hours | 06/04/2018 | 7/10
I backed Bloodstained on Kickstarter so I recieved this game for free. It's a good game, but I feel I would've gotten more out of it if I had more of a connection to the classic Castlevania games.

Game 26: Golf Story (Switch) | 18 Hours | 06/20/2018 | 8/10
I decided to see what this game is about after hearing all the praise it got and I was not disappointed. The golfing itself is entertaining enough, but the different quests that reframe the golfing into mundane tasks and other gimmicks give the game its unique personality.

Game 27: Mario Tennis Aces (Switch) | 7+ Hours | 06/27/2018 | 7/10
Mario Tennis is probably my favourite of the Mario spinoffs, so while I'm generally happy with this game it does feel a tad underwhelming with its decent enough story mode, poor single player tournament mode and mediocre online mode.

Game 28: Unravel Two (PS4) | ~8 Hours | 07/02/2018 | 9/10
I was a big fan of the first Unravel game that released two years ago so I was excited when it got randomly dropped at EA's E3 conference. It's a very iterative sequel that keeps the original gameplay intact while adding a whole lot of new shit. While I don't really understand why a game like Unravel has time trials, it doesn't hurt the experience much.

Game 29: Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (PC) | 20 Hours | 07/07/2018 | 8/10
A game I started years ago, practically when I got my PC, that I only got around to finishing this year. The shop management of the game is really fun, but the dungeon crawling is pretty dreadful. Thankfully after a few resets and some money/items in the bank, you can pretty much ignore the dungeon crawling and just make a living reselling shit you buy from the townsfolk.

Game 30: Serial Cleaner (PS4) | ~6 Hours | 07/10/2018 | 7/10
Basically Viscera Cleanup Detail as a 2D top down stealth game, almost like Hotline Miami in a way. It's visually appealing and its gameplay is generally solid. It was fun going for 100% blood cleaned every level.

Game 31: Pato Box (PC) | 6 Hours | 07/14/2018 | 8/10
Watched a guy stream a demo of this ages ago and it piqued my interest. While the game might suffer from some need of polish, I have a soft spot in my heart for this game. The 'adventure' parts of the game are basic but can be interesting and the boss fights are a unique spin on the Punch Out formula which isn't something people have tackled much at all.

Game 32: Bomb Chicken (Switch) | 7 Hours | 07/17/2018 | 8/10
Fun 2D platformer where you can only gain elevation by laying stacks of bombs at your feet. It's a unique spin on 2D platformer design and the level design really makes it shine. The 'punch' of the bombs exploding is really satisfying.

Game 33: [DLC] Mario + Rabbids: Donkey Kong Adventure (Switch) | 7 Hours | 07/19/2018 | 8/10
Solid DLC expansion for Mario + Rabbids, chockful of everything that made the base game fun. Shame DK and Rabbid Cranky can't be brought over into the main game, though.

Game 34: Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP) | 32 Hours | 07/25/2018 | 7/10
The wait for Valkyria Chronicles 4 prompted me to finally finish this game that I bought years ago when I first bought my Vita. While the gameplay is still great because it's still Valkyria Chronicles, it falters in a lot of ways outside of that with regards to its story, progression and mission design.

Game 35: [DLC[ Sourth Park: The Fractured But Whole DLC Stories (PS4) | 5 Hours | 07/31/2018 | 8/10
This is both the expansions that came with the seasons pass for the game. Though a bit short, they're fun to play through and are at the quality of the base game. All the new characters/classes being usable outside of the DLC is great.

Game 36: A Hat In Time (PC) | 13+ Hours | 08/15/2018 | 9/10
Really fun 3D platformer. Every level having its own unique gimmick was something I really liked. Modding support is pretty great. Wish it ran better on my PC.

Game 37: Guacamelee! 2 (PS4) | 11 Hours | 08/22/2018 | 10/10
The original Guacamelee! is one of my favourite games of all time, and the sequel definitely delivered on being just as good. While Guacamelee! 2 doesn't mess with the core of the game that much, all the additions made to the game are big improvements, especially the level design.

Game 38: [Replay] Guacamelee! 2 (PS4) | 6 Hours | 08/22/2018 | 10/10
Yes, I am counting the hard difficulty playthrough I did for the platinum the same day I completed the game as its own thing here. Hard mode is fun!

Game 39: Wario World (GC) | 8 Hours | 08/29/2018 | 9/10
Wario World is a game where Wario can run around a weird circus level and giant swing a clown, and while the clown flies off into a wall or something, Wario will wish him a rotten day. Its a decent enough 3D platformer, but the general weirdness that permeates throughout the game elevates it to something I truly love.

Game 40: Donut County (PS4) | 2 Hours | 09/03/2018 | 7/10
A cute, charming game about dropping things into holes. Never got that interesting gameplay wise, but it was a nice distraction all the same

Game 41: Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4) | 32 Hours | 09/11/2018 | 10/10
A nicely detailed open world that's less about exploring as it is about being a playground for you to use your fantastic movement options to navigate through. Fun combat with lots of variety with your gadgets and upgrades. A fun enough story to tie it all together. In a lot of ways, it's kind of like a big AAA Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction sequel, and I love it for that.

Game 42: Oh, Deer! (Beta) (PC) | 15 Minutes | 09/18/2018 | 5/10
I downloaded this off the Humble Bundle Treasure Trove so it counts as a game! I spent 15 minutes running over some deer in a very Outrun inspired game. Hopefully it develops into something more.

Game 43: Woten (PC) | 1 Hour | 09/18/2018 | 6/10
Decent little 2D puzzle platformer. You bash things with you head for a bit. Fun!

Game 44: Horizon Chase Turbo (PS4) | 12+ Hours | 09/24/2018 | 9/10
Took a chance buying this physically off eBay and I'm really glad I did. A really nice aesthetic, a soundtrack loaded with bangers. Even as someone who isn't necessarily nostalgic for arcade racers, the gameplay is top notch when you're weaving through traffic with the greatest of ease.

Game 45: Valkyria Chronicles 4 (PS4) | 50 Hours | 09/29/2018 | 10/10
I've waited practically a decade for a true sequel to Valkyria Chronicles, which is one of my favourite games of all time, and Valkyria Chronicles 4 definitely delivers. It takes all the things they learned and the improvements they made to the PSP games and brings them to the Valkyria Chronicles 1 mold masterfully.

Game 46: Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise (PS4) | 20 Hours | 10/16/2018 | 9/10
Got into the Yakuza series last year with 0 and Kiwami and liked them a fair bit, so I was definitely in when I heard the devs were making a Fist of the North Star game. It probably isn't the best Yakuza game released this year, but the FotNS wrapping does a lot to elevate the game personally. Especially with the over the top combat which I like a lot more than 0/Kiwami's combat and the bartending minigame is my favourite Yakuza minigame yet.

Game 47: Fight N' Rage (PC) | 108 Minutes+ | 10/20/2018 | 8/10
Wonderful little beat-em-up. Good combat engine, characters are unique and fun to play, branching paths with multiple endings keeps the game replayable. Only downside is how much you have to unlock. As much as they want to emphasize playing the arcade mode first like you're actually at an arcade, something like training mode and the combo trials should be available from the get go.

Game 48: Squidlit (PC) | 26 Minutes | 10/20/2018 | 6/10
Cute little platformer. It's main gimmick is looking like and being very inspired by game boy games, which makes the game unique; but I think it was starting to hurt my eyes a bit by the end of it.

Game 49: Please Knock On My Door (PC) | 87 Minutes | 10/22/2018 | 7/10
Little emotional experience. I can see how it probably hit others harder than me.

Game 50: Spark the Electric Jester (PC) | 3 Hours | 10/30/2018 | 6/10
Kirby meets Sonic in this underwhelming indie game. Overstayed its welcome by an hour at least.

Game 51: Wandersong (PC) | 9 Hours | 11/06/2018 | 8/10
Cute little adventure game with a whole lot of singing. Touches on some themes really well. Incredibly charming.

Game 52: Titanfall 2 (PS4) | ~4 Hours | 11/12/2018 | 9/10
Put off playing this for ages, and I finally got around to playing it. While the standard first person shooting is fine, I'm more here for the fantastic movement, the level design that houses fantastic platforming with that movement, and the fun slobberknocker titan battles.

Game 53: [Reignited] Spyro the Dragon (PS4) | 7 Hours | 11/14/2018 | 9/10
When I played through Spyro the Dragon for the first real time, my major complaint with the game was the lack of personality with worlds that were empty and lifeless and the dragons which were the same model copypasted all over the game. The reignited trilogy adressed those issues and is so much better for it, especially the dragons.

Game 54: [Reignited] Spyro: Ripto's Rage (PS4) | 10 Hours | 11/18/2018 | 9/10
Spyro 2 is the least changed of the trilogy, but that is for good reason as it was the best game of the trilogy originally so it needed less tweaking. All of the improvements from the other games are present here so overall it's still just as good as it was, if not better.

Game 55: [Reignited] Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PS4) | 11 Hours | 11/19/2018 | 8/10
They did with this game what they didn't do with the N.Sane version of Crash Bandicoot: Warped and that is they actually made the gimmick levels better. Bentley doesn't control like trash, Agent 9 is just straight third person shooting, the flying penguin rockets home in on things a bit, and the kangaroo's controls have improved. It's still a bit bloated, but it's a lot better than it is on PS1.

Game 56: 428 Shibuya Scramble (PS4) | 40 Hours | 11/26/2018 | 9/10
Decided to purchase this on a whim and I'm glad I did. A fantastic visual novel with great writing, great characters and some fun swerves along the way. The only mark against the game is the repetitive, cryptic endgame but overall it's really a fantastic treat.

Game 57: Warioware Gold (3DS) | ~3 Hours | 11/26/2018 | 7/10
Microgames are fun, and it being a glorified greatest hits collection is fine because it's my first Warioware game. I like all the pointless content it has.

Game 58: Super Smash Bros Ultimate (Switch) | 24+ Hours | 12/10/2018 | 8/10
Completion time is specifically for World of Light. The game is probably the best it's played mechanically since Melee. At the end of the day, it's still smash brothers so idk.

Game 59: Detective Pikachu (3DS) | 11 Hours | 12/13/2018 | 6/10
It's Ace Attorney for the Dora the Explorer community. Normally this wouldn't bother me but the excessive handholding in some parts can get in the way of the pacing and can turn some parts of the game into a chore.

Game 60: Katamari Damacy Reroll (Switch) | 4 Hours | 12/18/2018 | 9/10
Don't know why I stopped playing this when I bought it on my PS3, but that was a mistake. The visuals are charming, the story is nonsense in the best way, the soundtrack is fucking magnificent and it's a joy to play.

For the first time ever, I've done it. Past few attempts, I kept getting close but then had a period during the year where I just took a break. This year, I did sorta have this around October because I moved, but I had a strong enough lead by then and enough short games to get me just past the finish line. It's a shame for the games I started around late September like Spiderman and Fire Emblem Thracia 776... I was loving those two but my move just sorta threw those playthroughs into the abyss, I'm probably going to just restart them because of how long it's been since I played them.

44. Megaman 11 - [8/10] 6 hours, December 5th
A solid game, though it has its disappointments. The level design and especially the music isn't quite up to par with classic Megaman, but honestly this game is a solid entry and I'm just kinda glad to see Megaman actually return after years of compilation games. It's a game that's just good enough to be welcome, though I definitely would hope an eventual Megaman 12 fixes up a bit of what I didn't like with 11.

45. Super Smash Bros Ultimate - [9.5/10] December 8th
It's Smash, Snake returned, K. Rool and Ridley and the Belmonts finally arrived... not much to say here other than that I'm fortunate this game came out when I was at 44 games completed rather than when I was at 24 games completed. Not really sure I'd have completed the challenge if this were out earlier.

46. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage - [9.5/10] 9 hours, December 16th
I'm in a weird place where I actually preferred Spyro 1 by a tiny margin, and early on with Ripto's Rage I actually wasn't enjoying the game too much. It actually felt like a bit of a downgrade at times... but then I was informed that quite a bit of the things I liked about Spyro 1 were bits of polish that didn't actually exist in the original game (and, simultaneously, 2018 polish that Spyro 1 was able to receive in part because Toys for Bob had waaaaaay more time to polish up Spyro 1 than they did 2 and 3). That changed my perspective on the sequel quite a bit, things like Spyro being very quiet and NPCs seeming a bit too repetitive were more a result of being a more true to form remake due to time constraints. And in a vaccuum, Spyro 2 is a fantastic platformer that I had enjoyed thoroughly - seeing where its DNA influenced the remake of its prequel after my playthrough made me appreciate it even more.

Fuck Gulp though. Seriously, awful boss fight, absolutely hated it and I want someone from both Insomniac and Toys for Bob to confirm that Gulp is, in fact, permanently dead and that I, specifically, killed him forever. You know, cartoon characters can survive quite a bit, and I just want to be sure that he's dead and buried and that I did it, that I purged the evil that was Gulp.

47. Katamari Damacy Reroll - [10/10] 5 hours, December 17th
One of those games you experience for the first time and immediately realize it's an all-time favorite. I absolutely adore everything about Katamari Damacy and I can't wait to revisit this game forever. Time to pick up some other games in the series.

48. Roundabout - [8/10] 2 hours, December 17th
There's a bunch of side content I could do, and maybe I still will, but overall I'm pretty satisfied with just running the main story and a few side missions. Roundabout was a charming game that provided the incredibly bizarre niche that is Revolving Limousine Speed Platforming, and honestly that was enough for me to have a good time.

49. The Unfinished Swan - [8/10] 3ish hours, December 19th
Charming and very cute with some interesting aesthetics and gimmicks. I had some issues, like the night time segments being a bit annoying to navigate, but the game was so relatively brief that I can't really hold that against Unfinished Swan as a whole. Glad I finally got around to it.

50. Squidlit - [9/10] 35 minutes, December 19th
I was so prepared for this game to veer off a cliff into shitty grimdark nonsense, and my favorite part about Squidlit is that it didn't do that at all. It just remained a cute and fun faux-Game Boy game that didn't waste any time with bullshit. It's just a cute game about a cute squid, and I loved my 35 minutes I spent with it.

51. Minit - [9.5/10] 1 hour 15 minutes, December 29th
Managed 68% completion across 143 runs. In a year full of indie titles that I absolutely loved, this is a pretty great last minute contender for a top spot. I don't know if it's my absolute favorite indie game of 2018, but it's certainly close.

52. Kamiko - [5/10] 48 minutes, December 29th
It was... okay. Thoroughly mediocre, works as an okay little arcade experience but despite its gimmick of having three different characters to play as, I don't really care to actually replay it. Purely just a decent game with little I care to revisit. Bit of a dud to end on, but at least it wasn't bad.

I doubt I'll be able to complete this challenge again next year unless I play a lot of shorter games, but I'll give it a shot. I'm just happy I finally managed it.

Whoa dude, that's a really cool record of your completed games.

Thanks folks!

Is there a page for 2019 sign ups yet?

As mentioned in my last post; for folks eager to kick off the challenge anew I'll be starting the 2019 thread on January 1st, so have those post making fingers at the ready and I'll see you in the new year! (and I'm LA based, so my new year starts a little later :D)

100) SUPERHOT VR - This was the coolest way for me to cap off 2018. SUPERHOT VR is a must for fans of VR and I could see somebody who wasn't sold on the concept have this as their tipping point. It's a brief experience just for the "story" but one that continuously pushed and challenged me. Very satisfying to play through in a couple of 45-60 minute sessions. Someday I'll have to try the non-VR version but for now this was my 2018!

It's so exciting to see everyone wrapping up their years! Congratulations to everyone that hit 52+ games!

Great effort on those that didn't hit 52, you still put a significant dent in your backlogs! Here's to a new year, best of luck to everyone who attempts this again!

Wozzer's gallery looks great so I wanted to throw a thing together as well, haha

One final update for the year, with four games beaten in December to take my final tally to 90 for the year:

87. Delete (Steam) - 17 December 2018
All puzzles completed, 100% of achievements unlocked. Delete is a great little puzzle game, with a simplistic yet stylish presentation. At first it seems like it's just going to be a fairly straightforward Minesweeper-like (i.e., requiring you to locate a number of specific tiles within a grid, based on numbers indicating how many such tiles are in adjacent tiles), Delete quickly brings in an impressive range of additional mechanics to this formula. Ranging from restricting the 'adjacent tile' information to just corners, to information about complete rows/columns and rotation of the grid, often making good use of presenting the grid as a 3D object, these mechanics do a great job of bringing variety and challenge to the puzzles. With 50 puzzles to solve, Delete is a good length but doesn't outstay is welcome.

88. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey (PS4) - 24 December 2018
Platinum trophy earned; 100% progression reported in Club Ubisoft. I always find that I enjoy games in the Assassin's Creed series, but with Odyssey this goes to another level and it's quite possible my pick for the best game of the year. Building on the change in direction for the series started by last year's Assassin's Creed Origins, Odyssey presents players with a huge open-world, this time taking place in ancient Greece. The game world is populated by a huge amount of interesting locations, characters and quests, encouraging exploration throughout, and there's a similarly engaging main story 'campaign' driving the game forward, developing into three strands that can be progressed at whatever rate the player chooses, balanced with side content.

The game offers a choice between two playable protagonists - siblings Alexios and Kassandra - with the other character playing a key part in the main plot; although little changes based on your choice, the characterisation here is excellent and I found myself very much enjoying the excellent writing brought out by Kassandra, who I really liked as a character.

Beyond exploration, combat is a key element of Assassin's Creed Odyssey and the game allows a great variety in how to approach this, with three skill trees available to be developed, focusing on archery, melee combat and stealth - any of these can be pursued with equal success, or blended together. Controls for this combat system are responsive throughout and most combat scenarios are well-done, with interesting environmental elements keeping things interesting and a decent level of difficulty - all in all, a very complete package here and I look forward to the DLC release!

89. The Gardens Between (Switch) - 25 December 2018
Complete playthrough. The Gardens Between is a short, but high-quality, surreal puzzle game, and could arguably be described as a work of art. Each level presents the player with a circular island, which young, close friends Arina and Frendt have to work their way around, eventually reaching the summit to end each level. The simplicity of the game's controls - comprising just back/forward movement and an interaction button - belies the complexity of some of the puzzles here, which are heaving reliant on time manipulation. To elaborate on this - the movement controls that you have quickly show themselves in fact to be more accurately thought of as controlling the flow of time, so that you're not just affecting the two protagonists' movement but also that of all other elements in the game world, and through interaction with various elements as the protagonists pass them you can alter their behaviour as you then progress time (or in some cases, as you reverse it) - this all makes for some very interesting, and at times surprisingly challenging, puzzle scenarios. With an attractive graphical style and relaxing soundtrack, The Gardens Between makes for a very enjoyable experience, albeit one that's somewhat short (it can readily be beaten in 2-3 hours).

90. PAN-PAN A tiny big adventure (Switch) - 26 December 2018
Complete playthrough. Another somewhat short game, PAN-PAN is an exploration and puzzle-solving game taking place from an overhead perspective, as you take control of a woman seeking to repair her crash-landed balloon-like craft. The game has quite obvious mobile roots, with a simplistic graphical style that nonetheless works very well to depict the world, and there are some interesting puzzles that are satisfying to solve, but I'd caution that a good number of the puzzles feel rather obscure in the how they ultimately need to be approached/solved and I wouldn't fault anyone for using a guide here.
