A thread for people that are trying to play 52 games in a year. Tell us how you're doing and what you are going to play next - claim a post and update us on your progress.

4kmgx92.png

How do I take part?
Claim a post (you may need two later). Write down each game and your thoughts about each one. Here's an example of what good looks like, and format below as an example:
1: GAME NAME (DATE)
# INSERT INFO AND COMMENTS HERE

2: GAME NAME (DATE)
# INSERT INFO AND COMMENTS HERE

...

Anything new this year?
I'd like to collate some stats as the year progresses so to that end completion dates would be especially useful. Any additional context, such as hours played, review score, review body or platform are at your discretion, will be awesome to see and give me more data to play with.

I also plan to go back to the traditional avatar Hall of Fame, and have it run across multiple years going forward as a badge of honor for long term backlog-beating consistency.

How do I know when I've completed a game?
That's up to you, it could be completing the game or playing 3hrs+ if it has no ending or is a MP game. You can do replays, as long as all the games are completed in 2018.

Do I have to record time?
No, though most platforms (Steam, Xbox, Nintendo, etc) will now do it for free!

Do I have to review or comment on the games I complete?
Not required but very much welcomed. A few words and maybe a quick score does wonders to share your impressions with other users as you go. Full blown mini-reviews aren't necessary.

Do episodic games count as a single game or X amount of games?
That's up to you. It's alright to count something like Life is Strange as one or five games. Your choice.

Can I finish a game I started in 1998 and count that?
Yes.

What should I do once I've completed the challenge?
Shoot me a PM with a link to your post that shows all the games you've completed. I'll make you thread famous.

Do board games count?
They do not. Vidya games only in here.

Is there a deadline?
t1546329300z4.png

What are those medal icons I see on avatars?
That's the Resetera 52 Games Challenge Medal, achieved by beating the challenge on a given year. The number within the medal represents each year you've beaten the challenge since 2018. That's right, consistency and commitment comes with glorious numerical rewards.

Woah that medal is super cool, can I get one for my full sized avatar?
It's awesome you want to rep the thread around Resetera, so sure here's a version you can slap on!

Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King (Nintendo Switch)
Started 1/01/2018 - Completed 27/01/2018
Playtime: 10 hours
Score: ★★★☆☆

For some reason it took me a very long time to actually beat this game. I had a good time with this but it felt very repetitive mid to end way, specially the puzzles.
I was itching for some good ol 2d Zelda and this did wonders to me but I would've probably drop it otherwise since it does nothing to stand on its own.
Overall, good game if you want to get your 2D Zelda fix.

Celeste (Nintendo Switch)
Started 27/01/2018 - Completed 30/01/2018
Playtime: 11 hours
Score: ★★★

What an absolute masterpiece. It's hard to describe what this game did to me, I never expected this game to have such an impact in my life with the story and the main character's background which I can relate a lot. The gameplay is amazing, it's like a mix of Super Meat boy with Metroidvania elements and a Fez coat of paint. The controls are tight, it never feels unfair and the music is gorgeous. This is honestly a GOTY contender for me.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (PC)
Started 1/02/2018 - Completed 11/02/2018
Playtime: 40 hours
Score: ★★★☆☆

Second time playing this game but I have to admit I would have dropped it if it didn't have turbo mode which made a huge difference. I only focused on the main game that's why I was able to finish so quickly and this time I promised myself to pay attention to the plot and there still some parts that I don't get lol, maybe it's because English is not my native language and this game uses a lot "hard" words. The game itself is great, music is awesome and I really like the gambit system but I just can't get into MMOs type of games that are single player and maybe that hindered my enjoyment of the game.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (PC)
Started 14/02/2018 - Completed 1/03/2018
Playtime: 90 hours
Score: ★★★★☆

That's right, 90 hours. This game consumed these last two weeks and I dont regret it. My Kiseki experience comes from the PC versions only so I had to wait to get the two CS games ported over to PC but man it was worth the wait. I absolutely love the soundtrack of this game so kuddos again Falcom. The battle system is mostly the same but there are some tweaks to the quartz system like unlocking quartz level (kinda like the Sky games) that makes it that you are not overpowered from the start (somewhat) and also magic is faaaar more useful in comparison to the first game so that's a plus. Can't talk much about the plot because that would be a huge spoiler, thank you XSeed and Durante for porting this game!

1. Diablo III: Rise of the Necromancer
PC | Time Played: 8.50 hours | Rating: 8/10
Finally getting around to finishing the campaign for my Necromancer build. Brings me back to the days of using Necro in Diablo II. Just sitting back and passively watching the chaos unfold as my minions attack everything. I have gone through Acts I-IV and will go through Act V (Reaper of Souls) soon.

2. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls
PC | Time Played: 2.0 hours | Rating: 8/10
The fifth Act was okay. Besides the glorious opening scene, all other cinematics are of the hand-drawn variety; a shame.

3. Riptide GP: Renegade
Switch | Time Played: 7.0 hours | Rating: 5/10
Wave Racer, this is not. Plays more like Hydro Thunder which isn't bad. The latter half of the races in Career mode is challenging and frustrating but I persevered. I don't care enough about the game to try and unlock all of the racers/vehicles.

4. Metal Slug X
PC | Time Played: 1.2 hours | Rating: 7/10
I thought I had played and finished Metal Slug 2 years ago (Metal Slug X is an upgraded version of 2). I guess I haven't because I don't remember any of the levels at all. Still a solid Metal Slug game and makes me want to go through the other six Metal Slug games.

5. Doki Doki Literature Club
PC | Time Played: 2.9 hours | Rating: 5/10
This was interesting. The first hour was kind of boring and I wasn't feeling it. The latter two hours were much more engaging.

6. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - The Fighting Edition
SNES | Time Played: 0.5 hour | Rating: 4/10

2007: 18 games
2008: 25 games
2009: 18 games
2010: 20 games
2011: 15 games
2012: 18 games
2013: 12 games
2014: 18 games

I've not managed to make 52 games since 2015 (only managed 44 last year), though I'll be prioritizing it a lot more this year. The backlog needs beating.

1. Super Mario Odyssey - As usual, great 3d mario platformer. Some great unexpected moments for long time Mario fans
2. Star Wars Battlefront 2 - I thought the FPS sections were mediocre. Space battles were fun. Story was nice(except last mission that felt out of place)..
3. Super Mario World- As fun as I remembered it. Wonderful 2d platformer.
4. Super Punch Out - Not as fun as the original but still great. Really enjoyed seeing some of the iconic characters again.
5. flOw - Its an ok game. takes some getting used to the controls.
6. Flower - Its an pretty good game. Much better than flOw. takes some getting used to the controls.
7. Call of Duty WWII - Pretty good campaign but the story is a giant WWII cliche
8. Peggle 2 - So fun. They better make another Peggle game.
9. The Last of Us: Left Behind - Felt it was a little story heavy and gameplay light.

February

10. Uncharted; Lost Legacy - most fun ive had with an Uncharted game
11. Weeping Doll - Not very good. Had game breaking bugs so I had to start over twice.
12. Rez: Infinite - Amazing. Especially Area X.
13. Werewolves Within - If you can join a good group, its a ton of fun.
14. Kirby's Dream Course - Underrated gem from the snes.

March

15. Resident Evil Revelations 2
- Fun Game. Will pick up revelations one when it goes on sale.
16. Spelunky - One of the best games of the past two generations.
17. Inside - Pretty fun, plays a lot like Limbo. What an odd twist near the end.
18. Kamiko - Heard a lot of good things about this game. I thought it was ok.

April

19.
Shape Sounds - Fun platformer, amazing music.
20. The Inpatient - So much potential. Such a disappointment.
21. Arizona Sunshine - A fun VR shooter that tries to be funny but isnt.

May

24. Hitman Go - See Lara Croft Go comments.

26. Splatoon 2 - Great game. Has a surprisingly amazing single player mode.
27. Jotun - Amazing atmosphere and bosses, Highly recommended.

June

28. H1Z1 - Played a lot and even got to be the final survivor. It was fun for awhile but got repetitive. Maybe I played to much of it.
29. Psychonauts: Rhombus of Ruin - Fun and charming vr adventure featuring the cast of psychonauts.
30. One Piece:Grand Cruise - Exremely basic gameplay. I dont recommend unless youre a diehaed fan of the series.
31. Super Mario Bros - I takes a little time to get used to the imprecise controls but it holds up pretty well

July

32. Mass Effect 2 - still great
33. Mass Effect 3 - Still the greatest

August

34. Mario Tennis Aces - Really fun and challenging but short campaign
35. Guardians of the Galaxy - Really put me off Telltale games for awhile. So many bugs.
36. Nex Machina - Another great HouseMarque twin stick shooter
37. Super Mario Bros 2 - it would be interesting to see a sequel with this kind of gameplay
38. Theseus - Cool atmosphere, bland combat.
39. Late Shift - Not a ggod game and not a good movie but combined it was really interesting and I hope to see more games like it

September

40. Halo:CE - Aged Surprisingly well. Really had a lot of fun
41. Super Mario Bros 3 - Aged well, still a lot of fun. Its a lot more challenging then I remember it being back in the day.

44. Waddle Home - meh. bought it back when it was on sale when PSVR was new and finally got around to it.

Excellent, post reserved - I'll be able to start filling this out shortly!

1. Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 1: The Enigma (PS4) - 1 January 2018
2. Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 2: The Pact (PS4) - 1 January 2018
3. Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 3: The Fractured Mask (PS4) - 1 January 2018
PSN sale pickups in the run-up to Christmas, so I though that I'd get stuck into this series before the holidays come to an end. I think I'd prefer to see a bit more of Batman himself than we do here and the game doesn't really do anything new techincally, but I'm enjoying the story so far and look forward to seeing where it goes from here.

4. Desert Strike (SNES) - 3 January 2018
I loved the Strike games on Gameboy when I played them many years ago, but haven't until now ever played their full home console equivalents. I'm pleased to find that while the gameplay in Desert Strike isn't overly deep, the game is still just as fun and satisfying as it was, albeit still rather punishingly hard in places - I'm impressed at myself that I was able to beat it when I was younger! It was also quite a pleasant surprise to find that there's a whole extra mission here compared to the Gameboy release. A nice dose of nostalgia at the start of the year, and I'll need to revisit Jungle Strike next. before too long.

Bonus trivia: Amy Hennig (of Naughty Dog/Uncharted fame) has an "additional art" credit for the game!

5. OneShot (Steam) - 4 January 2018
100% of achievements unlocked; 'true' ending, via new game plus and Solstice update. A rather neat puzzle/exploration game, where players guide a child protagonist on a quest to restore light to as dying world. The puzzle gameplay is decent enough, but the game's real strengths come from the story and the concepts underlying this. Most significantly, the game directly acknowledges that it is a game, with the protagonist interacting with the player, and much more than that, but I won't go into detail to avoind spoilers. With a touching and thoughtful plot, this is an experience that will stay with you for a while.

6. Paint it Back (Steam) - 9 January 2018
All puzzles solved on maximum difficulty; all achievements unlocked. Picross is always an addictively compelling type of puzzle game, but this is one of the best implementations that I've played in a long time. This is a charmingly well-presented package with a nice theme around an art gallery setting, and boasting some subtle but really appreciated (optional) quality of life features, such as aiding drawing long straight lines with some auto-correction of mouse inputs. Of course, the puzzles themselves are really the most important part of the package and these live up to the quality of the rest of the game, all being possible to solve without guessing and with some impressive variety and imagination in their subject.

header.jpg

7. Cat Quest (PS4) - 9 January 2018
Platinum trophy. Cat Quest is an entertaining but fairly shallow action-RPG, with an approachable combat system based strongly around timing - this is implemented in such a way that if you're able to control the timing of attacks and movements to avoid enemy attacks it's rare that any encounter is impossible, with potentially a very satisfying result. The downside is that this can become repetitive quite quickly over extended play sessions - greater incentivisation to experiment with the game's combat magic system would be to the game's benefit. Alongside this, there's some nice variety in the game's equipment/loot system, factoring into combat and the protagonist's stats. Don't come to this game expecting a deep and sophisticated story, but for its generally well-implemented bouts of combat in a very 'cute' setting, Cat Quest is certainly worth giving a chance.

8. Hidden Folks (Steam) - 11 January 2018
All levels completed; 100% of achievements earned. Hidden Folks is a really charming, entirely hand-drawn, 'hidden object' type game, very much in the style of the Where's Wally books. The gameplay is largely based around searching for distinctive people and objects within a series of typically large and complex scenes, grouped according to themes such as snow, desert and forest - but the game remains compelling despite the apparently simple mechanics. Each scene features a lot of interactivity based around clicking on elements within it, from digging holes and parting trees/bushes, to operating switches with a variety of functions, to an extent far in excess of elements that relate directly to the target people/items - the care and attention lavished on the game is clearly evident throughout. The search for your targets is made more interesting by each being accompanied by a short text clue to their location, lending a puzzle-like feeling to many of them - while asmall handful of levels are actually full-blown puzzles rather than the usual people/object search. All told, a really great game.

9. Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 4: What Ails You (PS4) - 28 January 2018
100%of trophies earned. Another decent episode that progresses the story significantly, in interesting ways, though somewhat short.

10. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: DLC 1+2 (Switch) - 28 January 2018
Finally I've found the time to return to this masterpiece, after beating the main game back in 2017. Alongside completing all quests (base game and expansion) aside from Trial of the Sword, I've collected all armour pieces (base game and expansion) and completed the Hyrule Compendium, though I've called it a day on going after all 900 Korok seeds. The expansion content builds meaningfully on the main game, with both some nice quality of life improvement and, particularly in DLC pack 2, some interesting changes in gameplay formula.

header.jpg

11. Assassins Creed Origins: The Hidden Ones (PS4) - 3 February 2018
100% of trophies earned; all quests completed. It's more AC: Origins, but as I loved the base game that's no bad thing. There's some interesting expansion to the story and well-designed encounters, especially the sizeable fort in the centra of the map.

header.jpg

12. Skylar & Plux: Adventure On Clover Island (PS4) - 4 February 2018
100% of trophies earned. A short and fairly enjoyable take on the Ratchet & Clank-style of 3D plaformer, though with combat wholly-melee based rather than having any ranged weapons. The game doesn't have the same charm and polish as the Ratchet series and I don't think that this would have sustained a longer game, but it gets the basics right and makes good use of collectibles to reward exploration, being generally neither too well-hidden nor too obvious.

header.jpg

13. Square's Route (Steam) - 4 February 2018
All 100 levels complete, 95 with 3-star ratings. This is a decent puzzle game that tasks the player with guiding a cube around 2D grid-based levels representing a garden, with the aim being to remove coloured 'weeds' by squashing them with matching colour-codes faces of the cube. For a simple mechanic, Square's Route can get impressively challenging towards the end of its 100 levels, and compelling to try to achieve the 'perfect' minimum-moves completions (though I'm convinced that at least a couple of these are impossible).

Although the game does gradually introduce a few new mechanics, such as moving platforms, teleporters and a few types of enemies, it could still benefit from some more variety in these, and many of the enemies move in real time rather than in the turn-based manner of the rest of the game, making them more of an annoyance than a puzzle challenge. The game would also very much benefit from colour-blind assistance options for its later levels, where a couple of the colours used can appeal very similar, and some way to visualise the colours of the hidden faces of the cube (only three can be seen directly at any given time) would be beneficial.

14. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - System Rift and A Criminal Past (PS4) - 7 and 11 February 2018
Counting the two elements of the season pass as a single game towards my total. 100% of trophies earned in each. It's been great to get a chance to spend some more time in a Deus Ex game - very few games do this kind of freeform gameplay anything like as well. System Rift's bank setting may be well-worn, but this scenario is seen frequently exactly because it can work so well, and this isn't just just a typical heist; A Criminal Past's prison is less frequently seen, but works well. In each case, the areas are just as detailed and polished as those in the full game. The one complaint that comes to mind is partly my own fault, with completionist leanings - but the inclusion of a "no augments" trophy/achievement is an incentive away from many of the mechanics that can make the Deus Ex experience particularly compelling, and would have been better not included.

Shadow-of-the-_Colossus.jpg
Shadow-of-the-_Colossus.jpg

15. Shadow of the Colossus (PS4) - 27 February 2018
Platinum trophy; complete image gallery unlocked. A really beautiful game that I definitely should have gotten around to playing sooner - but at least by waiting I've had what's probably the 'definitive' experience with it. The setting does a great job of capturing a sense of loneliness and gravitas, with each colossus encounter being a well-designed setpiece, satisfying to beat (even if I did take fairly liberal assistance from a guide). I'd have preferred if the last of the trophies hadn't needed quite as much in the way of grinding, ut beyond that there's not a great deal to find fualt with here.

header.jpg

16. Replica (Steam) - 7 March 2018
Two full play-throughs complete, with 100% of achievements unlocked. Quite a decent little game that presents a simulated mobile phone and tasks the player with investigating the activities of its owner to prove links to terrorism and an anti-government agenda. Ultimately the gameplay is quite simplistic, based primarily around searching through conversations, social media posts and photos for specific information, alongside inferring a few passwords/login details (e.g., from birthday dates), and the game is utterly unsubtle about how it presents a message about the potential dangers of the information age and state surveillance - but as a whole, the game presents an interesting and satisfying experience that I'd recommend playing.

header.jpg

17. Outcast: Second Contact (PS4) - 12 March 2018
Platinum trophy. Some really fantastic nostalgia here, as I loved the original release of Outcast all those years ago - and for the most part this is an excellent remake. Sadly, though, I hit upon a game-breaking bug late on in my playthrough and wasn't able to complete it, which somewhat soured the experience - but I very much enjoyed everything prior to that (plus, the trophy structure allowed me still to get the platinum with a speedrun-style approach through to get the one trophy that the bug locked me out of).

The combat in Outcast remains somewhat clunky, but the eminently dodgeable nature of the slow-moving projectiles used by most enemies makes encounters somewhat different from that which most comparable games offer. Where Outcast excels, though, is in the detailed world that it's created, with an impressive amount of detail packed in to many of the varied environments and some interesting quest design - all adding up to a compelling experience. Graphically the game holds up well and doesn't betray too much of its 90s roots and the soundtrack remains a notable highlight, just as impressive now as it ever was.

Super-_Luckys-_Tale.jpg

18. Super Lucky's Tale (Xbox One) - 18 March 2018
100% of achievements unlocked; 99/99 clovers collected. Super Lucky's Tale is an enjoyable little platformer, certainly no Mario but it holds up well against the recent crop of second-tier platformers that we've seen over the past year or so. Generally the levels are fairly easy, but if aiming for 100% there are a few sections offering a decent challenge, and there's a nice variety in both the platforming scenarios and the world themes. A notable criticism is that at times the jumping isn't as responsive as it should be (e.g., when pushing up against a vertical surface), but once you know what to expect with this it's generally manageable. Overall I doubt that anything here will be especially memorable, but I had a good time playing through Super Lucky's Tale - oh, and this was also my first experience with Xbox Play Anywhere, which is undoubtedly an excellent feature and a definite positive of buying digitally - even if buying physically remains my preference.

header.jpg

19. Assassin's Creed Origins: The Curse of the Pharaohs (PS4) - 26 March 2018
100% of trophies earned; all quests completed; all locations completed; all equipment upgrades. This is a substantial piece of additional content for AC: Origins, with an compelling plotline and, as a particular highlight, some really great variety in environments, which include several set in the afterlife. In terms of gameplay, while a few new skills are added with the expansion and the level cap is raised, it remains very much aligned with the base game - no bad thing, perhaps, as it was already enjoyable as it was

header.jpg

20. Batman: The Enemy Within: Episode 5 - Same Stitch (PS4) - 29 March 2018
100% of trophies earned (with platinum trophy for the complete season). A decent end to the series - more action-focused that I'd expected, but still allowing enough time to tie up the loose ends, especially as regards to John Doe. I have to wonder whether a third season might be possible - which I'd definitely be on board for!

header.jpg

21. The Bridge (Steam) - 31 March 2018
100% of achievements unlocked. This is a puzzle game heavily inspired by the works of M.C. Escher, with distinctive hand-drawn level geometry featuring 'impossible' objects, reflections and symmetries. The objective of each level is to navigate the protagonist to the level's exit door, usually after first collecting one or more keys needed to unlock it. The key puzzle dynamic is while the protagonist is unable to jump (movement is limited to just walking left or right), you also have the ability to rotate the entire level freely, while retaining downwards gravity, so that what was once up becomes down, left, right or any angle in between.

While puzzles start off fairly simple, the difficulty level ramps up rapidly, alongside the addition of new puzzle elements within each chapter to increase further complication - these range from vortices which trap the protagonist or other objects if they come too close, to the introduction of objects of opposite 'polarity', accessible only after passing through fixed 'inversion' points. Solving the trickier puzzles certainly brings a sense of satisfaction, though by the end these were becoming somewhat too complex for my taste and and as a result could tend towards feeling like trial and error could be almost as effective an approach as truly understanding an efficient solution. With that proviso aside, though, the game gets my overall recommendation.

header.jpg

22. Tacoma (Steam) - 15 April 2018
100% of achievements unlocked. I wasn't a great fan of Gone Home, Fullbright's previous game, but really enjoyed this. Taking place in an abandoned space station, Tacoma tasks you with exploring the station, learning about the events leading up to the station's evacuation by interacting with 'augmented reality' recordings of the crew during certain key events. The level of detail that's been put into designing the world is extremely impressive, making Tacoma station highly compelling to explore. The story that unfolds is similarly engaging, heightened by the unusual means of telling it, with the AR recordings being a similar style to 'immersive theatre'. Highly recommended.

23. Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (PS4) - 16 April 2018
Platinum trophy; 175/175 side quests completed, 60/60 tainted monsters defeated, all characters level 99, kingdom fully expanded. This is a thoroughly charming, beautiful RPG, though with a few flaws. Contrasting with the first game, combat now takes place in real time and is fast and fluid, but most will find it to be (too?) easy in the early parts of the game. That said, there's a significant jump in difficulty a little over halfway through the game and if you seek out side content, challenging encounters are there to be found throughout. If you choose to use them, there's quite a large range of battle mechanics - typical spell, ability and weapon/equipment selections, then a 'zing' mechanic allowing enhanced versions of skills to be used, ever-present fairy-like creatures known as 'Higgldies' that provide bonus effects, a food system and more. Now, the low difficulty means that you could probably get through the game without using many of these, but they're all enjoyable to experiment with.

Aside from the core RPG gameplay, there are two other key elements to the game - kingdom-building, which tasks you with building up a new kingdom (in reality, more akin to a growing town) from scratch, with limited customisability and skirmishes, being real-time battles between armies that take place on the game's overworld map. Neither of these are especially deep, but I found them to be enjoyable companions to the main game.

Flaws? Well, the easy difficulty could be seen as one, depending on your mindset. The storyline is quite simplistic though as mentioned at the start, charming throughout, and voice acting is very sporadic and its implementation can become a bit grating at times. Overall though, I enjoyed my time with this game and would happily recommend it to anyone who enjoys JRPGs.

header.jpg

24. Subsurface Circular (Switch) - 18 April 2018
Another high-quality release from Bithell games, Subsurface Circular is a text-based adventure game in which the protagonist is a robot detective investigating the disappearance of another robot - in defiance of directives from its human 'masters'. The story here is very well-told, with impressive, immersive world-building despite the limitations of its text-based approach - this creates a strong picture of the outside world that the protagonist (being restricted to a carriage on the 'Subsurface Circular' underground train system), doesn't actually get to experience, while also leading the curious player to ask themselves (and imagine the answers to) questions about the wider world state. Progress takes place through conversations with other robot travellers, with occasional light but satisfying puzzle-solving elements.

This is all wrapped up with an attractive presentation. The text interface is simple but stylish, with a background depicting the train carriage, but particular praise has to go to the soundtrack - although clearly subjective, I found this to have a number of memorable tracks, well-judged to match each scenario.

header.jpg

25. Last Day of June (Steam) - 26 April 2018
100% of achievements unlocked; 20/20 memories collected. Last Day of June is a very well-told, emotional game, heightened by a beautiful, painting-like graphical style and soundtrack. The game sees you following its protagonist, Carl, as he relives memories of the day on which his partner was killed, attempting to save her from this fate. It's short - about 3-4 hours for a first playthrough - but not unduly so for its price, and not something that I'd see as a negative for this type of game.

In terms of 'gameplay', the game proceeds through some light exploration based puzzle-solving - this can ocasionally become a little repetitive due to a trial-and-error element, but generally the puzzles remain satisfying, with logically thought-out solutions. One slight annoyance to note is that the trial-and-error parts mean that the game could benefit from a cutscene skip option as you'll end up watching some sequences a few times over, albit in abbreviated form, but this doesn't detract much from the overall experience.

header.jpg

26. Far Cry 5 (PS4) - 7 May 2018
Platinum trophy; all objectives completed in every region. Contrasting with the level-based structure of most first-person shooter games, Far Cry 5 continues with the series' now well-established outdoor open-world setting. This time around the game is set in the US, specifically rural Montana, seeing the playing cast as a deputy sheriff sent to arrest the leader of a religious cult; of course, these things never go smoothly, and the game then sees the player working to reduce the cult's influence on the region through a wide range of missions and liberating outposts within three key regions, before finally confronting the cult's leader. A wide range of weapons and vehicles are available for use towards this goal, including both aircraft and boats as well as many different land-based vehicles. The setting and premise is very much in keeping with the outlandishness of the previous games, once again pulled off in a very entertaining manner.

The level of detail in the world is very impressive, and as well as the core story missions, a large number of optional missions are scattered throughout the area, alongside other activities such as the new 'prepper stashes' - a range of puzzle and platforming-based scenarios that reward ability points and cash, replacing the towers that had become an established mechanic in previous games - stunt racing, hunting and one of the more enjoyable fishing minigames that I've played recently. Returning from previous games are enemy 'outposts', presenting setpiece combat encounters that can be attempted however the player chooses, be that stealth, direct assault or a mix - personally, I found the ability to use stealth here to be incredibly satisfying, albeit more difficult to pull off successfully than has previously been the case, as the enemies seems a little too sensitive to disturbances. All in all, there's a level of variety here that means that it's hard to get bored at any point.

Gunplay generally feels solid, if not outstanding, and while there's some good opportunity for customisation through silencers, sights and extended magazines (alongside cosmetic enchancements), the game would benefit from more semi-automatic weapons and longer-range sniper rifles. It also takes more to take down many enemies than feels realistic, even on lower difficulty levels, but not enough to detract too much from the overall experience.

As well as the core single-player, the game includes an 'arcade' which is essentially the game's multiplayer component. Arguably this isn't needed here given that this has always been a single-player focused series - a thought that I'd generally lean towards, but with a well-equipped level editor here as well, there's impressive potential to this mode, which also includes additional single-player (and co-op) scenarios.

Overall, I had a great time with Far Cry 5 and I'd have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who enjoys FPS or open-world games.

27. Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King (Switch) - 12 May 2018
Story completed; 100% of items/upgrades and collectibles obtained (48/48 heart pieces, 16/16 energy fragments, 20/20 scrolls). More than a little inspired by classic 2D Zelda games, especially A Link to the Past, Blossom Tales does an excellent job of recreating the gameplay and style that makes the Zelda games so great. Both the overworld and dungeons are well-designed and satisfying to explore, though the puzzles and item selection never quite reach the heights of the best of Zelda. At around 10 hours for a first playthrough, the game is a decent length for its price, though with only four full-size dungeons it does feel that it's over all too quickly. Of course, it's perhaps testament to how much I enjoyed my time with the game that it left me wanting more!

header.jpg

28. Seasons after Fall (Steam) - 13 May 2018
Completed with 'true ending'; 100% of achievements unlocked. Visually stunning, Seasons after Fall is an enjoyable puzzle platformer, seeing the player take control of a fox attempting to restore prosperity to a forest. Divided into four main areas - one for each season - the puzzle mechanic centres around switching between seasons, with each bringing changes to certain elements of the game world - for example, a flower that absorbs water as it grows in the summer, allowing deeper parts of a lake below it to be explored - with satisying results, even if complexity is limited.

Although the environment is a single connected world, in my mind it lacks the interconnectedness and extend of upgrades to be considered a true 'Metroidvania'. Despite that, the game still feels like it would benefit from inclusion of a map, or alternatively some clearer direction on where you need to go to progress at times, as it can be quite easy to waste time trying to work out where to go at times and there's no fast-travel mechanic for most of the game. With a bit of effort, though, this can be worked through (and of coruse, guides are out there if you choose to take that approach).

Special mention should be made to both the visuals and music, which are excellent and help to give a cohesive feeling throughout the game, across all four seasons.

header.jpg

29. Stories Untold (Steam) - 16 May 2018
100% of achievements unlocked; all episodes completed. While 'horror' themed games don't usually appeal to me, I'd heard enough positive impressions of Stories Untold to give it a try, and am very glad that I did. Perhaps more about tension and suspense than pure horror (there are no real 'jump scares', for example), this is a blend of the adventure and puzzle genres, presented as four distinct episodes. While the puzzles are typically fairly straightforward, the unusual presentation (the first episode begins as a text-adventure, then develops from there) and underlying plot of each episode create an engrossing experience, with an excellent pay-off at the end, tying the various narratives together.

I beat nearly 180 games last year, this year will probably not be so prolific, but we'll see.

JANUARY:
#1: Kelvin & the Infamous Machine (5 hours) - A point n click adventure about travelling back in time to help historical inventors and creators after a mad scientist takes credit for most of their work. Sort of like Time Squad the Game. The humor is just kind of ehh.. to people who could use this info, there's no button to show all the hotspots, but they're easy enough to spot, and you can double click exits to warp there.
#2: Another Lost Phone (2 hours) - While the subject matter of the first Lost Phone is more near and dear to me, Another Lost Phone has a more gripping narrative that unfolds a lot more organically. It seems they really took a lot of feedback to heart from the original.
#3: Ara Fell (15 hours) - Very competent RPG Maker game that manages to have a very luscious aesthetic despite using stock assets (the profile art could be improved, however). I wouldn't put this at the top of the RPG Maker list, however.
#4: Old Man's Journey (2 hours) - Sidescrolling walking simulator where you raise/lower terrain to help an old man on his journey. Relaxing game.
#5: Cat Quest (8-10 hours) - I played the iOS version, which wisely opts for point and click combat rather than a virtual controller. The nature of the game and its simplified systems works pretty well in a pick-up-and-play mobile format.
#6: Miss Fisher's Deathly Maze Episode 1 (2 hours) - Here's a cool little iOS game, it's a detective game based on a series of media but also HEAVILY inspired by Phoenix Wright. While it doesn't have cross-examinations, it has many other similarities, from the sound design to the text effects, and the general interface is very similar. This game is coming to Steam and will probably be the best Wrightlike there (though I do like Aviary Attorney).
#7: Alphadia Genesis (18 hours) - Bog standard JRPG by Kemco, the masters of bog standard JRPGs.
#8: The House of Da Vinci (5-6 hours) - The Room-inspired puzzle game full of switches and toggles and hidden compartments. If you've played The Room games, you know what you're getting here.
#9: Xanadu Next (10 hours) - Falcom's Not-Ys, a dungeon crawler in a small, interconnected world, with the looting->levelling->shortcut unlocking kind of loop that Souls games have, just transposed to a more arcadey-action style (though nowhere near as uptempo as the Ys series).
#10: Midnight at the Celestial Palace (2 hours) - First part of a planned musical adventure trilogy. Yes, it has songs.
#11: Yume Nikki (4 hours) - Surreal dream-like game from a decade ago made in RPG Maker. Has something new coming out in the future apparently!!
#12: Leaving Lyndow (half hour) - Short little walking sim about a woman leaving her community behind to go explore the unknown. Very pretty, not much in the way of content, just looking at the sights and chilling out.
#13: Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet (4-5 hours) - Charming self-aware Monkey Island knockoff with a bit of a odd artstyle but it means well.
#14: Miss Fisher's Deathly Maze Ep. 2: Cleopatra's Curse (2.5 hours) - A bit of a meatier episode that hops back and forth between investigations in a sea-side town, and investigations in Melbourne. The mystery ultimately doesn't have much in the way of twists and turns, but is compelling in the sense that the main character is distracted and trying not to get involved (and then ultimately getting involved).
#15: ICEY (3-4 hours) - Devil May Cry sidescroller meets Stanley Parable. Not the greatest dub or localization, of a story that tries to be both wacky comedic but also have serious Cthulhu mythos.

FEBRUARY
#16: Skylar & Plux (2 hours) - A surprisingly decent Ratchet & Clank knockoff, whose main crime is being ridiculously short. Despite its generic characters that border on obnoxious, the level design is pretty impressive.
#17: The Room 4: Old Sins (5-6 hours) - Wonderful sequel in the Room series. It'll be done while I'm in bed playing it so I'm pre-emptively putting it in here.
#18: The Perils of Man (3-4 hours) - 3D point n click adventure with time travelling (but not to famous history, just in service of plot). It was not bad! A little jank, and some odd looking cutscenes.
#19: Black Sails: Ghost Ship (4-5 hours) - Point n click adventure that is interesting but ultimately average, with very conventional plot twists.
#20: Fire Emblem Heroes Book 1 (10~ hours) - I didn't have to spend a cent!
#21: Mega Man Battle Network 1 (12 hours) - Hoo boy, okay, the first half of the game is very enjoyable, but Escape being a chip rather than an always ability makes the second half of the game a chore. So many unnecessary battles with trash enemies!!
#22: Golf Story (10 hours) - Very enjoyable golf game... Dunno if I like this or Hot Shots Vita more, but this one I actually finished. Pretty easy, though, outside of a couple of side quests. Beat the final tournament by four strokes. Chipping is crazy good in this game.
#23: The Fidelio Incident (2 hours) - Very pretty walking simulator where you fight through the cold to save your wife. It plays up a couple of tropes that would lead to a typical twist, but then go a different direction. It's still not AMAZING but it at least didn't resort to the really predictable walking simulator plot reveals, and it's nice to look at.
#24: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (15 hours) - Should be done before I go to sleep tonight... It's a quality followup to the self-titled, and seems to have a branching path with different missions based on who you follow. It doesn't do the "talk to the player as a tactician" thing, which is fine with me because I thought that was weird anyway (yeah I know Robin is basically the same thing in Awakening). I ultimately wish that the armories stocked better gear.

MARCH:
#25: Matterfall (3 hours) - Well, this was a disappointment, I have to say. Sorry, Housemarque but you whiffed on this one. Style over substance all the way, with cumbersome controls, a real lack of enemy variety, and levels that go on for way too long for how little the game spices things up.
#26: PSVR Demo Disc 2 (2 hours) - A collection of small portions of full(?)-priced VR games. It came with the PSVR on a disc, so I'm counting it as one singular game.
#27: Jeanne D'Arc (25 hours) - Level 5's one and only SRPG, it's a good one. A little too reliant on making you grind if you don't have the perfect group.
#28: Weeping Doll (1 hour) - VR horror trash
#29: Dying Reborn VR (1 hour) - VR horror trash
#30: The Last Guardian VR (10 minutes) - A little VR plaything where you say hi to Trico and throw food barrels to him.
#31: Arc the Lad (9-10 hours) - Kind of weird little Active SRPG, also bizarrely short compared to its much longer sequels. Almost rudimentary to the point of being simpler than early Fire Emblem.
#32: PSVR Worlds: Scavenger's Odssey (1.5 hour) - Mechwalking-simulator.. okay there's a tiny amount of action too. The amount of gravity-defiance made for a very dizzying experience.
#33: Tearaway (4-5 hours) - Wonderful game from Media Molecule, easily their best.
#34: PSVR Worlds: The London Heist (1/2 hour) - The 'action' game on the PSVR Worlds collection, it's very silly and a dumb as fuck plot. I was very impressed by the expressiveness of the character models.
#35: PSVR Worlds: Ocean Descent (1/2 hour) - More of a 'movie ride' than a game, a shark attacks you as someone talks to you through an intercom about some plot that has no relevance to anything.
#36: STATIK (3 hours) - Your VR hands are stuck inside of puzzle boxes. Should scratch the "The Room" kind of itch, but without the millions of tiny secret drawers.
#37: Eight Ball (many many tries) - Literally a pinball machine in my apartment's basement. I thought there was more to the table but it turns out there's not since it's from the solid state era.
#38: Conceptis Fill-a-Pix (many hours) - My 'going to sleep' game. I solved all the F2P puzzles which is enough to call this beaten.
#39: Adventure Time: Finn & Jake Investigations (6-7 hrs) - Sort of like if early-era Telltale made an Adventure Time game. Similar to the Sam & Max series. Not super funny and not super difficult either but it's alright. The combat sections are HORRIBLE though.
#40: Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom (16 hrs) - Somewhat breezy but just average 3D JRPG with fighting game combat, deviantart character design, and a bafflingly obtuse story with an even more baffling ending.

APRIL:
#41: Infamous First Light (3-4hrs) - Very enjoyable compact little superhero game. Not sure why the low metacritic score. I thought it was fun, pretty, and engaging. Maybe the skill trees aren't the best, but, eh.
#42: Shadwen (5-6 hours) - Stealth puzzle game where time freezes when you aren't moving. You can also rewind time. The general gist is to escort a child from point A to point B without being caught or seeing all the murder you're doing to clear a path. It's just okay and the levels get really samey after a while.
#43: Watch_Dogs 1 (15 hours) - What a mess of a game this was. A lot of good and bad ideas that do not come together. The constant chase sequences are awful awful awful. Reducing hacking to just a door unlock device is so uninspired as well.
#44: Minecraft Story Mode Episode 1: (2.5hr) - I debated whether I'd count individual episodes of Telltale games as their own game, until I saw above that I already did that for Miss Fisher, so here we are. This series seems more tailored for kids than all ages, and it has really weird ass combat. I'm not sure whether I will continue or not.
#45: The Order 1886 (6 hours) - Another trashy mess but at least it's beautiful as fuck.
#46: The Park (1.5 hours) - Trashy walking sim spun off from The Secret World. It's a bit mystifying that the people who made TSW made this, as TSW is generally praised solely for its storytelling, and the story in The Park is a long fart.
#47: The Inpatient (2.5 hours) - Vaguely branching VR horror game by the makers of Until Dawn. Thankfully, despite being in an asylum, it does not become an Outlast-style tropefest. I liked it, although the ending left something to be desired.
#48: Batman: Arkham Knight (15 hours) - Improved gameplay and traversal from City, awful awful awful awful awful awful awful story.
#49: Dragon Quest Heroes (20 hours) - Action-heavy Musou game... not much in the way of strategy or territorial control in this one. Definitely not for everyone.
#50: The Invisible Hours (4 hours) - Wonderful walking simulator, combining the mechanics of Tacoma with a murder mystery. Apparently this is by the makers of The Sexy Brutale?? I'll have to play that too.
#51: Phil's Epic Fill-a-Pix Adventure (many hours) - Despite its low budget presentation, this is a very good collection of fill-a-pix puzzles and I'll miss it now that I've finished it.
#52: The Evil Within (13 hours) - Yes, there's a lot of bullshit and insta-kills in the game, but I still enjoyed the Evil Within quite a bit.

MAY:
#53: The Last of Us Remastered (10 hours) - This was just eh. I actually don't think it was a very good game. The stealth is awful, the guns feel awful, every character other than Ellie is awful, and the story is (intentionally) dissatisfying.
#54: Kamiko (1 hour)
#55: Prey (16 hours) - The ending may have been dumb, but wow what a game. What a great game!!
#56: Gravity Rush Remastered (8 hours) - Interesting, flawed game. I'm curious to see how the sequel improves on it.
#57: Splatoon 2 SP (5-6 hours) - A lot like Splatoon 1 SP but with a few more design wrinkles to the levels.
#58: Yakuza Kiwami (18 hours) - What a fun fun game! My first Yakuza game and I picked a good one to start with. Majima Anywhere was a great concept.
#59: DuckTales (1 hour) - The original NES game! Yeah I'm going through the Disney Afternoon Collection now.
#60: Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers (1 hour) - There's really not a whole lot to this game, it's pretty bare bones and just a simple sidescroller. I do like the idea of throwing balls at bosses though.
#61: Tailspin (1 hour) - Okay this one is fucking weeeeeeird. A shmup where you have to upgrade twice to have the ability to rapid fire, where you can shoot diagonally (and sometimes have to against bosses), and you can turn around LITERALLY by flying upsidedown.
#62: Darkwing Duck (1.5 hour) - Basically reskinned Mega Man.
#63: The Sexy Brutale (5 hours) - Really cool time-loop murder prevention game. Reminded me of Ghost Trick a little, but without the possession aspect.
#64: Cursed Castilla (2.5 hours) - Ghosts & Goblins style game, originally a free game by Locomalito but remastered for Steam with additional fixins.
#65: DuckTales 2 (1 hour) - More of the same but looks nicer.
#66: Chip & Dale 2 (.5 hour) - See above.
#67: Implosion (6 hours) - Splashy top down action game... a bit low budget so the mechanics are not very deep, but it was enjoyable enough for a bedtime Switch game.
#68: Dishonored 2 (13-15hrs) - I'll need to think more about whether the first or second game is superior. I think the second game is very good, and has interesting setpieces, although the mission design isn't QUITE as strong.
#69(nice): Fallout 4 (20 hrs) - An extremely 'more of the same' Fallout with dumbed down dialog and paths. Very few vaults :(

JUNE:
#70: Observer (5-6 hours) - Mostly okay game from the makers of the not very good Layers of Fear. The detective stuff was fun. The trippy sequences were bog standard.
#71: LEGO City Undercover (15 hours) - I wish this was better.... bleh.
#72: Samus Returns (8 hours) - Fuck yeah. Third best 2D Metroid behind Super Metroid and Zero Mission.
#73: Tom Clancy's The Division (25 hours) - Ugh... fuck lootgrind games, and especially fuck playing them solo.
#74: Snipperclips (2 hours) - This on the other hand I played co-op with my roommate and had a blast!
#75: Sonic Mania (3 hours) - It's soooo good but I wish the co-op was better than "bye Tails". Split screen that shit!!
#76: Uncharted 4 (10 hours) - What a blast! Just the thing I needed after my soul-sucking experience with The Division.
#77: Theatrhythm (5 hours) - Cute little music game. This wasn't Curtain Call so the 'campaign' as it were is pretty limited.
#78: Destiny (8 hours) - Now this was a fun game and didn't punish me for being underleveled. Once I did the campaign, however, I deleted it (70 gigs!!!)
#79: Moon Hunters (1 hour) - Roguelite game, beat it, dont care about beating it further times.
#80: Splasher (5 hours) - Platformer by the designer of Rayman Legends, with very similar game DNA. Very excellent.
#81: Torin's Passage (4 hours) - lol what a stupid game, fuck you Sierra
#82: D the Game (2 hours) - FMV game from the 3DO by the late Kenji Eno. I played the scanlined-as-hell PC version PUBLISHED BY ACCLAIM (RIP).
#83: Steamworld Heist (9.5 hours) - Active Control SRPG but in 2D.. essentially plays like a mix of Valkyria Chronicles and Worms. Super good, and doesn't overstay its welcome.
#84: Dying Light (12 hours) - Spiritual parkour successor to Dead Island, better than Dead Island in a lot of ways... no fast travel was a real buzzkill, as were the forced zombie encounters in story missions.
#85: Black the Fall (3 hours) - Out of this World style game, also inspired by Limbo/Inside. Doesn't stand out from those games but I liked the atmosphere.
#86: THOR.N (45 minutes) - Small walking simulator about the gamification of society -- was a Humble Original.
#87: Stray Cat Crossing (2 hours) - Small little walky game made in RPG Maker. No real strong feelings about it.

JULY:
#88: The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit (1 hour) - I am really, really tired of seeing shitty single/widowed dads in video games.
#89: Hidden Agenda (2 hours) - Oh boy, another story where we show how crazy a villain is by having him
dress in drag
fuck off Supermassive
#90: Until Dawn (8 hours) - I've now completed the Supermassive trilogy and I'm convinced these people only know how to direct. They can't write for shit.
#91: RUINER (4 hours) - A dang good time, doesn't overstay its welcome, nice and splashy.
#92: Resident Evil HD (10 hours) - Jill defeated all the zombies and they died forever the end. Chris was saved but he's dumb.
#93: Infamous Second Son (8 hours) - Very fun to play superhero game, with a Native American protag!! I think I liked First Light's tight focus more though.
#94: Rhiannon (7 hours) - Goofy low-budget Myst style game.
#95: Bear With Me (6 hours) - Three-part point n click adventure.
#96: Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon (5 hours) - Silly fun that I should definitely have not played solo. It's meant for co-op.
#97: Hustle Cat (3 hours) - VN about a cat cafe where people turn into cats. It's pretty goofy. I went down the Finley route.
#98: SiN (8 hours) - That was a weird game. A 1998 shooter that FELT 1998. For better or worse.
#99: SiN Episodes (2.5 hours) - Unlike the first game, this was a clear Half Life 2 knockoff. Which, to be fair, I'm totally into. But it shows its age bigtime. And like HL2 Episodes, it was never finished.
#100: Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within (10 hours) - One of the all-time point'n'click classics, the story has aged horribly and... well.... it's just really bad. And the acting! The ACTING!
#101: Mass Effect Andromeda (16-17 hours) - Honestly? This was alright. Not $60 alright, but good for the price I paid.
#102: Spycraft: The Great Game (5-6 hours) - It's not a GREAT game as it says on the box. But it's a fun game with trashy FMV where you do CIA stuff in a vaguely 90s web-browser looking interface... it's the kind of game Activision would never do now.
#103: Hidden: On the Trail of the Ancients (3-4 hours) - Mediocre Myst-style game that ends unfinished. Oops!
#104: Jackbox Party Pack 4 (endless) - Played just about every game on there. We actually did pretty well with Survive the Internet, but Fibbage is the star of the show.
#105: Cold Fear (6 hours) - RE4 on a boat. Yeah, RE Revelations did that too. And better.
#106: The Count Lucanor (3-4 hours) - Spooky top-down stealth fairy tale.
#107: Ahnayro: The Dream World (10-11 hours) - ARG-ish Steam game that involves a lot of googling and research to solve puzzles.
#108: Emily is Away 2 (2 hours) - Teens using AIM Simulator.
#109: Quiet City (5 minutes) - Yes, a 5 minute Humble Original. You walk around interacting with hotspots and that's it.
#110: A2Be (1/2 hour) - A VN Humble Original. It was very buggy and kind of a knockoff of that old CFB animated short about teleportion.
#111: Pocket Kingdom (4-5 hours) - Block pushing puzzle game with very very vague metroidy ability gating. VERY SLIGHT.

AUGUST:
#112: Red Faction (8 hours) - The original game, PS2 version... boy aiming was a hell of a lot different in the PS2 era! A lot WORSE kind of different.
#113: The 11th Hour (9 hours) - Maybe one of the worst first person adventure games I've ever played.
#114: Dead Secret (2 hours) - A breezy first person adventure spoop where you solve a murder case as a killer chases you around.
#115: Azure Striker Gunvolt (6 hours) - Another Inti-Creates Megaman-style jam.. this one was pretty darn fun, with a really bad story and a bad nonbinary stereotype character. I imagine the second game is better, and people say Burst is pretty good so I'll stay on this series for sure.
#116: Barrow Hill: The Dark Path (4 hours) - Surprisingly short followup to the original Barrow Hill game. The updated engine made the game feel a lot more like a Hidden Object Game without the hidden objects. The original, despite the jank, was a better trashy first person adventure.
#117: Subnautica (38 hours) - Ohh boy was I addicted to this one. But I'm glad I've finished it because the frustrations were really starting to mount up. The amount of pop-in is unforgivable, but even moreso is the amount of times I fell through the world. What the heck!!! Unknown Worlds more like Unknown Geometry.
#118: A Hat in Time (8 hours) - What a wonderful game! Don't buy it, JonTron is a piece of shit.
#119: Drill Dozer (7 hours) - A delightful Metroid-lite game from Game Freak (I call it Metroid-lite because it has-- LITERAL!!-- gear-gating in each level).
#120: Bleed 2 (1 hour) - Fantastic sequel to a massively underrated XBLIG gem.
#121: Sublevel Zero (2 hours) - Quenched my Descent thirst... for now. Beat on the second run, the levels were too samey to want to do another run to see the additional content.
#122: Knee Deep (3 hours) - Flawed but interesting interactive story game with a "stage play" aethetic. Really goes to sillytown in the third act.

NEXT:
Soma Spirits: Rebalance
Project Snowblind

ON THE SHELF:
Republique Remastered (finished episode 1, need to switch over from laptop to desktop before playing more, performance issues)
Hellblade (ongoing, need to be in a certain mood to play it)

NOT REALLY GAMES:
XX: Alumette & Invasion - Two animated short films made for VR by different studios. Invasion is also available in 360 video and is mostly designed like that, while Alumette has more of a space to explore.

2018 Challenge - 2B or not 2B - 26/52 Games

JANUARY

1. Human Fall Flat (Switch) || 1/1/18 || about 7h || ★★★½
40355004815_af1c99b007_o.png

This is a cute little puzzle game which can be played multiplayer. Now I only played it multiplayer, and I feel that if you play it by yourself you don't get the same feel out of the game. Playing with someone else causes you to mess up more often and mess with each other to hinder their progress (as well as your own mind you!!), and thus hilarity ensues. This game definitely has some problems, I know it's not supposed to be the easiest game to play and your character flops around like jelly, but sometimes them mechanics fuck you over rather than just making it a difficult challenge. Had to reload from the checkpoint multiple times due to things not being usable again, or moving something you shouldn't have, falling to your death and not being able to retrieve it (luckily the checkpoint function is there, and it does save regularly). It also crashed once when attempting to reload a checkpoint, this may have been due to someone re-spawning when it was chosen to be reloaded. Overall a fun game to play with friends with some small problems you'll probably get over and laugh about when playing it with them.

2. Doki Doki Literature Club! (PC) || 2/1/18 || 4h40m || ★★★
39460565221_40c0b56f44_o.jpg

A lovely VN with four cute girls in a literature club in school all fighting to be your one and only waifu, and in the end
They all try (and succeed) in killing themselves and each other so they can be your one and only waifu FOREVER!!!
25599972678_51c440a501_z.jpg
Overall the game was kinda annoying and repetitive (especially the first playthrough), but I could see it was building to something. Now I played this game after the hype, so I knew there was a twist, and it was going to be weird and creepy, but I feel like all that hype ruined it and it wasn't as over the top as it was made out to be. I did like the little things they did with the game files, and considering this is a free game it's made really well and is quite good! I also feel that the game handles their whole thing on mental illness a bit strangely, one second they can be making jokes about it, the next you have one of them saying nice things and to take care of each other, I just feel they could have used less of the jokes there. In the end it was a decent experience and I think anyone that has steam should also be creeped out by the weird school girls!!

3. Her Story (PC) || 7/1/18 || 4h || ★★½
38837167554_ffe645b6e7_o.jpg

This game is something unique to it with you being someone going through a computer system, looking into old videos about a murder. But it being unique doesn't make it a great game, while the story itself is quite interesting it falls flat almost everywhere else. It seems unrealistic for a police system to have all of it's videos not organised, or for there to be nothing else mixed in if you're doing a search for it. The videos were kinda well done, although some of the acting didn't seem very good. I felt it was padded out by the fact that you had to look up specific words to get new videos, and also kinda broken in the fact that if you put anything in comments or tags of a video it could mess up the searching and leave you not seeing some of the videos. Also them being all over the place makes it kind of difficult to follow, but I suppose that's the point to have you put the story together yourself. And finally at the end (after it deleted my save and I have to get all the videos again, with a guide this time) it just kind of ends, says something "shocking", but it just seems quite boring that it just ends. Overall it had a good story, bad ending and meh mechanics.

4. Monster Hunter: World (PS4) || 1/3/18 || 86h50m || ★★★★
41207773662_df2981388a_o.jpg

This is the first Monster Hunter game that I've ever played properly. I didn't really like the others and gave up on them quite soon after beginning them. This one seemed different, it might have been because the graphics were better and no loading between areas, or I just didn't give the other ones enough of a shot. The game itself doesn't have a great or huge story, but the mechanics for fighting the monsters are good and there's such a range of weapons to choose from and to try. There's not that many monsters and you feel like you're left fighting the same ones over and over, but I can give them the benefit of the doubt because they're adding more as time goes on. The online community (on the PS4) I've had no problems with (except for the odd really crap player) and it's great to be able to call for people to help you or to help others on something difficult, or even just something you want to finish quickly. Overall it's an enjoyable game which gives a lot of incentive to keep playing, as I'm still playing it now, with 130h and counting.

5. Life Is Strange: Before the Storm - Bonus Episode: Farewell (PS4) || 5/3/18 || 1h10m || ★★★★½
40355007025_b34790d0d4_o.jpg

This is a short bonus episode after Before the Storm which tells you of Max and Chloe's last day together. It doesn't give you any important details or story information, but gives you the chance to wander around and figure out what both characters were like before both seasons, and overall what went wrong when it came to Max leaving. It was enjoyable to play, and the ending, although it was known from season one, it wasn't really expected in this episode, making the whole goodbye even more heartbreaking than before by getting shown how they left it. Overall a good episode, and would definitely say anyone who likes the game should play it.

6. Attack On Titan: Wings of Freedom (PS4) || 28/3/18 || N/A || ★★★½
41156647431_ce23d462ab_o.jpg

I started this game back in 2016 but only got around to finishing it now in order to play the second one (which I have to play season one again anyway -_-) It's a quick paced action game following the first season of the Attack on Titan anime. You play as a variety of characters, each with different stats which can change the way you might have to play in order to control the situation. Each mission is basically the same, where you swing around, kill titans, help allies and then the bigger titan appears and you kill them. It basically continues in this way, with a few small exceptions. Overall it is a good and enjoyable game, yet repetitive, and to play the epilogue you need to do a lot of optional content, which pushed it's stars below a four.

7. Bayonetta (Nintendo Switch) || 1/4/18 || 12h30m || ★★★★
40454493244_68cce99be7_o.jpg

I had this game almost as soon as it came out originally on PS3 and I had gotten to the final Jeanne fight and I got stuck, and I gave up because I didn't know I could lower the difficulty at the time. And then I got the collection of the WiiU, and never got a chance to play it. And now after so many years I finally finished it on the Switch. I love this game's fighting, character designs, and art style. It's a bit confusing on the story sometimes but it generally came together, and sometimes the fights didn't seem fair. But overall I can't believe it took me so long to finish, and when I finally did I wasn't disappointed

8. A Way Out (PS4) || 4/4/18 || N/A || ★★★½
40355005645_15bfdc29f4_o.jpg

The story of A Way Out is the usual one when it comes to a prison escape, so there's nothing new and exciting there. The most interesting thing in this game is the coop gameplay. This can't be played by yourself and you need someone to play with, and honestly without this mechanic the game would be closer to 2 stars. You have to work together with your partner to escape, while also competing against each other in small minigames throughout the story (like piano, banjo, wheelchair balancing and connect four). This is what brings the game to life, some competition and cooperation with someone (in my case) you know, which makes the game more fun to play. But in the end any decision you make means nothing, and the ending (one of two) is decided in the end by which of you can mash 'x' faster, that's all it comes down to, it's very anti-climatic, and if it wasn't for this I would have easily given this game four stars, but instead I reluctantly gave it 3 and a half.

#1 Ys: Oath in Felghana – Completed 1/2/18 (PC)
#2 Ys I (Chronicles+) – Completed 1/3/18 (PC)
#3 Ys II (Chronicles+) – Completed 1/5/18 (PC)
#4 The Last Guardian – Completed 1/10/18 (PS4)

Ys: Oath in Felghana - This was the first game I bought during a Steam sale. Back then I didn't actually know all that much about XSEED or Falcom, but I knew that I liked Solatorobo and so I took a chance on it. Kind surprised that it took me this long to beat it, great game with a fantastic soundtrack and some really, really fun bosses.

Ys I (Chronicles+) - It took a while for me to get used to the bump system, but once I did I really enjoyed this one. Nightmare difficulty was a nice challenge, and beating Dark Fact on said difficulty is quite a badge of honor. Great music, nice 2D pixel art, short and sweet.

Ys II (Chronicles+) - Now, this game overstayed its welcome. Larger emphasis on story, more backtracking due to the MP system requiring you to constantly return to towns... The final stretch is especially bad, but the entire game felt like much more of a slog than any part of Ys I. Magic was a mistake.

The Last Guardian - The controls frustrated me until a little under halfway in, and then the rest of the game was great. I think it took me like 3 days to get to the water puzzles and then I just cleared out the rest of the game in basically a single sitting. I'm really regretting not buying one of those Trico plushies at E3 last year!

#5 Superhot VR – Completed 1/11/18
#6 Farpoint – Completed 1/14/18
#7 Monster Hunter: World – Completed 1/23/18
#8 Celeste – Completed 2/1/18
#9 Spyro the Dragon – Completed 2/7/18

Superhot VR - This was the first game I finished with PSVR. Great fun when the tracking works well, and something I'll probably go back to in the future. Makes you really feel like you're in the Matrix.

Farpoint - Got this with the PSVR Aim Controller, and while it's not a great game on it's own, the controller certainly helps it stand out. Hoo boy were the animations pretty jank though.

Monster Hunter: World - I reviewed this, so I won't say much here. I already have 200+ hours.

Celeste - Fantastic game, and I'm really glad I decided to pick it up to play in-between Monster Hunter sessions. Worked really well to keep me from burning out on MH quickly, and it's probably the best 2D platformer I've played since Dustforce!

Spyro the Dragon - This game was probably really great, once. God it has not aged well. Thankfully it was short... finally wiped this off my backlog. I think I bought this when I first got my PS3 in, what, 2008? Probably was one of the longest games that was stuck in that thing.

#10 Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds: Overdrive – Completed 2/8/18
#11 Super Punchout – Completed 2/19/18
#12 Star Fox – Completed 2/19/18
#13 Part Time UFO – Completed 2/26/18
#14 Kirby: Triple Deluxe – Completed 3/6/18
#15 Kirby: Planet Robobot – Completed 3/8/18
#16 Kirby's Dream Land 2 – Completed 3/9/18
#17 Kirby's Dream Land 3 – Completed 3/10/18
#18 Night in the Woods – Completed 3/12/18

Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds: Overdrive - I played through this one on the trip up to SF for the NISA press event last month. Haven't played a beat-em-up since I want to say the SImpsons arcade game. Fun stuff, got to play as Kurisu from Steins;Gate. Nothing amazing but well worth the money I paid.

Super Punchout - First game I beat on my SNES Classic. Thank god for rewind, because man are those later fights a pain! I loved the game, but it's brutal. More like a rhythm game than a fighting game.

Star Fox - Hasn't aged too well, but I still liked it. It helps that it's super short - beat it in around an hour or less, I'd say. I should get to Star Fox 2.

Part Time UFO - I had some Google Play credits on my account, they've been there a while... I decided to actually use them, and this game's western release was a good enough excuse. I wish there was a Switch version so I could have button controls, but it's still a great game! Reminds me of Rhythm Heaven, has that sort of charm. Cute.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe & Kirby: Planet Robobot - Feels appropriate to list both of these at once. Definitely some of the better games in the series, fun romps with some neat gimmicks. Triple Deluxe felt fresher playing them back-to-back, but the Robot was the better gimmick by far.

Kirby's Dream Land 2 & 3 - Also felt appropriate to talk about both of these at once. Dream Land 3 plays better, looks nicer, and has the better soundtrack, but I'm not sure which I liked more. At first I liked the Heart Stars but some of them were pains in the ass. Ugh.

Night in the Woods - I hopped off the Kirby train midway through Super Star to prevent myself from getting burnt out. I just couldn't play a Kirby game anymore or I'd go crazy, so I went with this. I've heard great things, other folks at RPG Site kept talking about how great it is, so I decided to finally get at it. Loved the music, loved the art, loved the story. Loved it. Switch had some performance issues, but I doubt most will notice it - I'm pretty sensitive to framerate changes.

#19 Kirby: Super Star – Completed 3/16/18
#20 Kirby: Star Allies – Completed 3/17/18
#21 Momodora III – Completed 3/23/18
#22 BoxBoy – Completed 3/24/18
#23 Zwei: The Arges Adventure – Completed 3/26/18

Kirby: Super Star - The SNES original still holds up really well, though I've yet to touch the DS remake! Great game, I can see why so many people consider it the best in the series.

Kirby: Star Allies - Levels are a fair bit simpler compared to the 3DS games, and the difficulty is almost non-existent. Regardless, I had a great time playing through it! Awesome music, beautiful visuals, and the final world really made things worth it.

Momodora III - I played through IV last year, and a friend of mine (after asking for metroidvania suggestions on PC) started going through the series. I saw this was only $2 on Steam, so it was an easy sell. Great game that didn't overstay its welcome.

BoxBoy - I bought this on 3DS years ago, and got about halfway through it. I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I expected to! I already have the other 2 in the series - I'll be finishing them up sooner or later, for sure.

Zwei: The Arges Adventure - I finished Zwei II last year for review, but didn't really get to this one until recently. It's a good deal simpler than the sequel - the sequel is undoubtedly the better game - but this was still fun too! One of my favorite Falcom soundtracks too.

#24 Uncharted: The Lost Legacy – Completed 3/27/18
#25 Rez: Infinite – Completed 4/2/18
#26 AM2R – Completed 4/6/18
#27 BoxBoxBoy – Completed 4/7/18
#28 Lara Croft GO – Completed 4/7/18

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - Got this when it was on sale for $20, finally ended up finishing it. It's shorter than the other Uncharted's, but it was good. I was gonna keep it around for the UC4 multiplayer, but honestly I've got too many multiplayer games as it is. I'll probably throw it on the BST.

Rez: Infinite - Played this on PSVR, wow. I tempered my expectations for the first game in VR, since it obviously wasn't originally designed for it, but with how some bosses had me really turning my head around to hit them - even the base game felt great. I cried playing Area X. If you have a VR headset and haven't played this, fix that.

AM2R - I picked up Samus Returns recently (another one for the backlog, heh), and I decided it might be interesting to compare the two Metroid II remakes. I really enjoyed this one, can't wait to check out the official remake!

BoxBoxBoy - This was fun, but a bit of a disappointment coming so close to my playthrough of the first BoxBoy. Besides for the "two boxes" gimmick, it felt like there wasn't anything new. Maybe the 3rd one will resonate better with me?

Lara Croft GO - Got this with the Humble Monthly, still felt like I was in a bit of a puzzle game mood so I tore through it in a single sitting. I think I'm good with puzzlers for a while.

#29 Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom – Completed 4/30/18
#30 Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin – Completed 6/7/18
#31 Hollow Knight – Completed 6/26/18
#32 Vanquish – Completed 7/12/18

Ni no Kuni II - I didn't like this one nearly as much as I'd hoped. Still good, still worth playing if you could get it on a discount - but I paid nearly full price! At least I finished it fairly quickly instead of dropping it in my backlog. It has some beautiful locations, at least.

Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin - I played the original Dark Souls on PC a while back, and I enjoyed it quite a bit - I was actually pretty excited for Dark Souls 2 pre-release, but a combination of the delay for PC, the downgraded visuals, and the post-launch disappointment meant I didn't actually play it until last earlier this year. Furthermore, I ended up putting it down for a while once Monster Hunter hit! I'm glad I finally played it, though. I think people are a little too hard on it.

Hollow Knight - I bought this a few months back, but all the excitement surrounding the Switch release got me to play the PC version I'd already bought. Haven't done the True Ending yet, and I don't know when I will, but it's a truly great metroidvania. Play it!

Vanquish - Since I just added a few long VNs/JRPGs to my backlog, I couldn't in good conscience not knock a few smaller games off of my backlog first. This was the first of 'em - not my favorite Platinum Games title, but I enjoyed it. Story is campy as all hell and I love it.

#33 BlazBlue: Central Fiction – Completed 7/13/18
#34 Limbo – Completed 7/17/18
#35 Umineko: Questions Arc – Completed 7/24/18
#36 Azure Striker Gunvolt – Completed 7/25/18

BlazBlue: Central Fiction - I still miss the way the story was separated by each character back in CT/CS, but at least the story is a step up from CP this time around. Actual gameplay is fantastic, I love the changes to overdrive and active flow. I'll continue to play this for a while.

Limbo - I wrote a review for this, so check it out.

Umineko: Questions Arc - The game isn't over, but since Chapters 1-4 and 5-8 are separate releases, and it took me something like 50-60 hours to get this far... I'm counting it. Too many thoughts to list here, and the story isn't over yet. I'll probably make a LTTP once I'm done.

Azure Striker Gunvolt - Got the Striker Pack on Switch a few days ago, and in-between Umineko chapters I decided to take a quick break to play something else. Haven't played too many MegaMan titles, but this was a pleasant surprise. Definitely checking out the sequel next.

#37 Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide – Completed 7/29/18
#38 BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle – Completed 8/2/18
#39 Civilization V: Gods and Kings – Completed 8/11/18
#40 Umineko: Answers Arc – Completed 8/14/18

Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide - Finally finished a game with friends, since they moved to PC! Took us long enough. Wasn't a huge fan of this one, but they were.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle - The story mode for this one was shorter than the others, and the singleplayer content is pretty lacking. Still an entertaining story, but good thing I play fighting games to, uh, play fighting games.

Civilization V: Gods and Kings - This was one of the first games I bought during a steam sale, when I first built my original gaming PC. I finally finished a game, I enjoyed it but I might wait to get Brave New World before tackling it again.

Umineko: Answer Arcs. I made a LTTP for this one. I'm still not sure if I should've separated both halves. I know that's how they released, but they really are two halves of the same story. Either way - what a fantastic story. Definitely up there with my favorites.

#41 Muv Luv Extra – Completed 8/21/18
#42 The Messenger – Completed 9/2/18
#43 Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk – Completed 9/17/18
#44 Forza Horizon 4 – Completed 10/6/18
#45 Forza Horizon 3 – Completed 10/8/18
#46 Destiny 2: Forsaken – Completed 10/14/18

Muv Luv Extra - I still need to finish Unlimited, I know, classes got me busy and then when I got Coven in for review that just set off a chain reaction of other games I had to play over reading more Muv Luv. I'll try and finish Muv Luv Unlimited before my next review game. Here's hoping! I enjoyed it for what it was, that being a light-hearted comedy VN setting up the rest of the series. Not much to say, since I haven't truly finished Muv Luv yet, even if this is technically the first part of the trilogy.

The Messenger - This was a charming platformer/metroidvania. Like others said, great game, but it drags on a bit in the latter half.

Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk - Not much to say, I reviewed it for RPG Site so you'll find my thoughts on it there. Great DRPG.

Forza Horizon 4 - I'm a sucker for Forza Horizon since playing FH3 back in 2016, and although I don't use my XB1 much since getting W10 it was what made me grab one back in the day. It's Forza Horizon, but this time with seasons! Progression still hasn't fully hooked me, I'd say, but I'm enjoying it.

Forza Horizon 3 - Playing 4 reminded me I never actually did unlock + finish that final showcase in 3. I rectified that.

Destiny 2: Forsaken - I played + reviewed the game on PS4 last year for RPG Site, and although I had enjoyed it at the time, I like many others fell off the Destiny train pretty hard after a few weeks. I kept hearing great things about Forsaken and a friend picked it up a few weeks after launch, so I made the plunge - this time on PC. Took me a while to get to it, but I eventually got to the raid and managed to clear it, and I definitely think I won't fall off the Destiny train nearly as hard this time around. I'm nearing max LL, but it feels like a more natural progression, and I can see myself continuing to come back in-between games once I do.

#47 Muv Luv: Unlimited – Completed 10/28/18
#48 Super Mario Party – Completed 11/7/18
#49 Mega Man 11 – Completed 11/13/18
#50 Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee! – Completed 11/24/18
#51 Tom Clancy's: The Division – Completed 12/3/18

Muv Luv: Unlimited - Don't really feel comfortable talking about this yet, especially since Alternative is probably gonna be my #52. I'll have to make a thread for the whole series when I'm done.

Super Mario Party - Did a full 20-turn game with a few friends. Can't say I'm a big fan of the minigames, but it's otherwise fun enough.

Mega Man 11 - This was actually the first Mega Man game I beat! Loved it. Felt hard but fair, loved the bosses.

Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee - Not only did I review this one, I streamed the whole thing too! You can find my thoughts there.

Tom Clancy's: The Division - Decided to finish this since I had picked it up earlier this year. Wasn't a big fan, but since I paid for it I wanted to "finish it" at least.

#52 .hack//G.U. Rebirth – Completed 12/16/18

.hack//G.U. Rebirth -- I love the worldbuilding, and it has a ton of charm, but I can't recommend this to anyone really. Still gonna finish the Trilogy (Quadrology?), though. Bit anti-climatic for my 52nd game!

Will be counting VN routes as different games as I'm reading them in Japanese.

In Progress:
1. Daitoshokan (True Route) [PC]
2. Persona 5 [PS4]

Beaten:

1. Sonic Forces [Switch] - 1/1/18 4/10
A game that feels like it's newest flagship title turns out not to be so good. Played this game with my brother so I wasn't able to experience the dress-up part of the game which I think would be even better than the stages themselves. The game plays out as if it's a reboot of the original sonic the hedgehog sometimes, as if they are trying to retcon the entire thing to start as how the original game did. However the story was very boring and whenever they had dialogue text boxes I just skipped it and went to the next level. Majority levels are far too simple and not very interesting themselves so it's not very fun to play in. I feel like I found 1/2 I really liked, but they ended too simply for it to be really memorable. The entire game is like 2 and a half hours, with 30 stages so it's really short too. Honestly I would pass on this game if you ever find your hands on it.

2018 Challenge: 34/52 games

Backloggery (feel free to add me!) | HowLongToBeat | Backlog Blitz

1: Emily is Away Too (1/1)
# ~1h 30m. Alright game; I thought the path choice in Chapter 3 was a little forced, but otherwise I thought it was good. Not particularly long, either.
2: Yakuza 0 (1/5)
# ~41h 30m [Started in 2016] Fantastic game, everyone should give it a try. Now I really want to play Kiwami.
3: A Mortician's Tale (1/6)
# 1h. Interesting look on death and mourning. Respectful, and reflective. Since it's short, I would recommend it.
4: Life is Strange: Before the Storm Episode 1 (1/7)
# Estimated 2h 30m. It's good to learn more about Rachel, given her importance in the original.
5: Finding Paradise (1/12)
# 4h 50m. Pretty powerful, not what I was expecting... but in a good way.
6: Peggle 2 (1/14)
# Estimated 6 hours? Peggle is cool, it's been forever since I played the first one. :)
7: Life is Strange: Before the Storm Episode 2 (1/14)
# Estimated 2h 30m. I dunno, I feel like nothing of worth really happened except for the very beginning and very end.
8: Orwell (1/16)
# 3h 50m. Very interesting game.
9: Life is Strange: Before the Storm Episode 3 (1/17)
# Estimated 2. Not really feeling this prequel. Ah well.
10: Night in the Woods (1/22)
# 6h 25m. I did Bea's path. Pretty interesting game, I wasn't quite expecting the... weirder things but still neat.
11: Ladykiller in a Bind (1/26)
# 5h 10m. It's interesting.
12: Under Night In-Birth: Exe Late[st] (2/8)
# ~10h. Review game. The Chronicles Mode honestly bores me to tears, but the gameplay itself is pretty great.
13: Picross S (2/24)
# ~8h. Beat the normal puzzles. It's Picross, that's about it.
14: BlazBlue: Centralfiction (2/24)
# ~9h. Meh.
15: Monster Hunter: World (3/1)
# 51h 47m. Lots of fun.
16: Subsurface Circular (3/1)
# 1h. Interesting, and short.
17: Aviary Attorney (3/3)
# 4h 45m. Honestly, kind of meh. Didn't like it much, and I also disliked the fact that I had to replay Act 3 because I missed something earlier.
18: The Longest 5 Minutes (3/14)
# 8h. Cute gimmick, and there was a nice twist right when I was starting to get a bit bored. Nice experience.
19: Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 (3/17)
# ~3h. I'm not particularly interested in doing the other stages or getting the true end. If anything I was a bit bored by the game.
20: Final Fantasy XV: Episode Gladiolus (3/23)
# 1h 17m. I knew I could play through this one once I got to a certain point in the main game. That said, this episode was really very boring.
21: Final Fantasy XV (3/25)
# 33h 59m. Not the best written Final Fantasy I've played, but I enjoyed it well enough. I may actually try to Platinum the main set of trophies since that doesn't seem too difficult.
22: Final Fantasy XV: Episode Prompto (3/29)
# 1h 37m. Gameplay is better than Episode Gladiolus, but the story is pretty bad. Just bad.
23: Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis (4/1)
# 1h 17m. The best of the three DLC episodes, it was pretty fun.
24: Code: Realize ~Bouquet of Rainbows~ (4/13)
# ~8h. for the new content. I love some good otome games.
25: The Council Episode 1 (??/??)
# ~3h. I forgot to add this on when I played it sometime in March, lol. A strong start.
26: Fortune-499 (5/5)
# 3h27m. A cute little RPG that doesn't overstay its welcome.
27: Omensight (5/12)
# ~7h. The story is interesting enough, but the gameplay is less than fun.
28: The Council Episode 2 (5/12)
# ~1h30m. Such a disappointment compared to Episode 1.
29: God of War (5/20)
# ~25h. Very good reboot, as someone that was repelled from the earlier entries. Good stuff.
30: Nepenthe (5/22)
# ~1h. Weird.
31: Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (6/6)
# ~2h 30m. I love how much this feels like a classic Castlevania title, but it also feels more fair.
32: Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion (6/18)
# ~4h. This expansion is haaaard, but a lot of fun. But also frustrating. But also it makes me better at the game.
33: The Banner Saga 2 (6/19)
# ~7h. It seems mostly to just set up for the third game and its conclusion, but I'm excited for that. Didn't like Bolverk much, though.
34: Yakuza Kiwami (6/29)
# 19h58m. Not as good a 0 imo, but it's also an older PS2 game. I do feel playing 0 first was for the best, as it made me care about the characters more.

Running Total: 39/52

Currently Playing:
Astrobot: Rescue Mission - PSVR

Completed:

1.The Last Guardian - PS4
Completed 1/12/18
*I had little to no expectations coming into this game. What I found was a beautiful world and an experience that Ill not likely forget for a long time. Absolutely phenomenal game, one of my very favorite PS4 games. I thought about lowering my score due to some technical issues but its a masterpiece in my eyes. 10/10

2. Undertale - PS4
Completed 1/13/18
*This is a game that Ive been meaning to play for years. Ive heard such great things and man was I disappointed. The writing and characters are definitely the highlights of this game. The combat is frustrating and at times unfair. I didn't really have too much trouble beating it but it just wasn't fun. I did not do the pacifist run which is widely referred to as the true ending but Ive had my fill of Undertale. 7.0/10

3. Agents of Mayhem - PS4
Completed 1/21/18
*This game has a really bad reputation but its not a terrible game. The writing is bad at times and the overarching story is mostly throwaway. That being said I did have fun with it. For people who likes boxes to check there are a good amount of things to keep you occupied. 7.0/10

4. Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series - PS4
Completed 1/23/18 (Platinum)
*Another game surrounded by bad buzz. I am so glad I didn't listen because I really enjoyed this game. Probably right up at the top of my list of favorite Telltale games. The voice actors did a pretty good job of capturing the essence of the characters in the movies. Highly recommended if you are a fan of Guardians and Telltale. 8.5/10

5. Pyre - PS4
Completed 1/28/18
*This game is so different and weird and I love that. Such a cool concept with some pretty cool twists and surprises along the way. The rites themselves were fun and got pretty tense at times. The music is also fantastic, I will definitely miss hearing some of these tracks. 9.0/10

6. Steamworld Dig 2 - PS4
Completed 2/4/18
*Steamworld Dig 2 does a great job of giving you meaningful upgrades and does it at a pace that feels very satisfying. The story ties in with the original but the game-play loop is where this game shines. The music is also a standout, specifically the music in El Machino. I've played all 3 of the Steamworld games and Im pretty in for whatever they do next. 9.0/10

7. The Evil Within 2 - PS4
Completed 2/10/18
*Had so much fun with this one. I normally dont play horror games, mostly because they terrify me, but this game really grabbed me. Once I came to terms with the fact that nothing in the game could really threaten me I was able to relax and really dive in. The reality bending world is one of my favorite to explore. The semi open world environments are a great direction for this kind of game. I continue to be very happy with Bethesda's single player game efforts. 9.0/10

8. Shadow of the Colossus - PS4
Completed 2/12/18
*I have mixed feelings about this one. I did play the original but I didn't finish it. There are moments where this game left me in awe and other moments where I was frustrated as hell. Its place in gaming history is not to be understated, the creative genius and thoughtfulness is something to behold. Bluepoint did an absolutely amazing job with the remaster. It was stunning on my PS4 Pro and 4K TV. With the $40 price point this is a must play for all PS4 owners. 9.0/10

9. South Park: The Fractured but Whole - PS4
Completed 2/21/18
*The follow up to The Stick of Truth is a clear evolution to the South Park RPG series. Improvements to the gear, ability and interface in general are welcome and made this trip to South Park much easier to navigate. The story is as zany as ever and even though the writing fell short of the first game I still enjoyed story. The combat was much improved, the grid system added some depth that made it less of a chore. Fans of South Park will enjoy this one. 8.0/10

10. Soma - PS4
Completed 2/25/18
*Played this when it first came out but hated the enemy encounters so I quit. Once the safe mode patch was live I decided to give it another try. Pretty cool story and loved the ending. The level design was not great, very difficult to navigate and got lost many times. Glad I came back to this one. 7.0/10

11. Life is Strange: Before the Storm - PS4
Completed 2/28/18 (Platinum)
*What an incredible prequel. It really gave some awesome depth to Chloe and made Rachel Amber a real person. It makes the original LiS that much better and even more heartbreaking. Great music, great characters, had so much fun with this one. 9.5/10

12. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age - PS4
Completed 3/13/18
*I have to admit, I almost quit this game towards the end. It became a drag but I powered through and over-leveled to the point where the end game was fairly easy. My college roommate saved over my game back when this originally released so I never actually finished this game. The story was not my favorite and hard to follow at times. I never noticed the parallels between this and FF Tactics the first time I played it but definitely did this time. Ivalice is probably my favorite FF world and I hope they bring it back for a future mainline FF game. Did not enjoy the license board but the gambit system made grinding much easier. Im glad I finished it and Im also glad its over. 7.5/10

13. Rime - PS4
Completed 3/17/18
*When Sony dropped support for this game I thought that it must be a terrible game with many problems. I was actually pretty happy when I saw it was free with PS+. I can see heavy influences from Team Ico games specifically Ico and The Last Guardian. I also see some Journey and Prince of Persia at times. The puzzles were all very straightforward but that didnt stop me from enjoying this one. A heartbreaking story and beautiful landscapes made this very enjoyable. 8.0/10

14. Resident Evil VII: Biohazard - PS4
Completed 3/20/18
*As mentioned above, scary games are not usually my thing. Not because I don't like them but because I cant handle them! I bought RE7 around Black Friday last year and just got around to playing it. I'm glad I finally mustered up the courage to stick with these games because I absolutely loved RE7. The story was not the strong suit here but it did enough to keep me interested throughout. The setting is what shines here. The creepy house and perpetual night were just awesome to explore. The two characters I had the most trouble with were Jack and Marguerite, only because you have to avoid them and cant fight. The Marguerite boss fight was so damn creepy and I loved it so much. Awesome game, count me in for the next RE game. 9.0/10

15. Little Nightmares - PS4
Completed 3/25/18
*This is a creepy little game that likely often draws comparisons to Inside and Limbo. The art style and atmosphere are where this games shines. The "enemies" in this game are horrific and disgusting and the level design is quite cool. The game also has a sinister twist that is never really explained but crescendos throughout the experience. There were some frustrations with the camera and not knowing exactly where Six was in the environment. 7.5/10

16. Halo Wars 2 - XB1
Completed 3/27/18
*I haven't played a RTS in quite a while so this was a welcome change of pace for me. I only played the campaign but definitely had fun with it. I might check out the DLC someday since this game will likely remain on Game Pass indefinitely. 8.0/10

17. Farcry 5 - PS4
Completed 4/8/18
*Awesome open world game with a good amount of things to do and collect. The more robust flying vehicles made traversing Hope county even better than previous Farcry games. The story wasnt the best but it was serviceable and kept the game moving forward. Some of the worst multiplayer Ive seen. Prevented me from trying for the Platinum trophy. Interested to see how the DLC turns out. 8.0/10

18. Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom - PS4
Completed 4/23/18
*I liked a lot of things about this game. The art style is amazing, I love the studio Ghibli look. The music was hit or miss for me, some songs felt out of place and overly dramatic at very slow and uneventful moments. The combat was much different than the original. I really didn't care for the higgledies, they didn't really do much for me. The story was nothing special, I liked it well enough. The voice acting was awesome but so sparse. I would have liked more voice acted lines. Interested to see where this series goes next. 7.5/10

19. God of War - PS4
Completed 5/3/18 (Platinum)
*When I started playing this game I really wasn't on the hype train. The combat was not clicking and it was really just feeling like an above average game and not much more. After getting to about the halfway mark it really started growing on me. I finally got a hold of the combat system and the story really goes places. Once I finally finished the game I could not stop smiling. Im currently doing post game content and loving every minute. I feel unstoppable, like nothing in the game can touch me in combat. Couldnt be happier with the game and where they took the series. This will definitely be very high on my GOTY list. 10/10

Update: Went back and got the platinum trophy, what a damn game.

20. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice - PS4
Completed 5/14/18
*Playing this directly after God of War may have been a mistake. It was interesting that they both took place in the Norse God mythos which I did not know before I started this game. That being said I thought this game was very boring. I considered quitting several times and really didn't enjoy the vast majority of it. The story was very unique and I liked that aspect but the gameplay is very thin and repetitive. The sound design is outstanding and visually the game does look very good. 7.0/10

21. Xcom 2 - PS4
Completed 5/20/18
*Picked this up again after putting it on my quit list last year. Got back into the loop and got addicted. Played super methodical and beat the game. Had an absolute blast this time through. Still some technical issues and the game is not a visual standout. Incredibly excited to see where this franchise goes next. 8.5/10

22. Gravity Rush 2 - PS4
Completed 5/27/18
*This series has so much damn charm. The story had its moments and the story board sections continue to be really well drawn. The combat is still a sore spot for this series. Some really confusing mid-air fights with the camera all over the place. Several insta-fail stealth sections that were not my favorite. Overall, I mostly had a great time with this game. Hoping that the series finds a way to continue. 8.5/10

23. Detroit: Become Human - PS4
Completed 6/3/18
*I really really enjoyed this game. Did it have some cringe worthy writing at times? Yes. Did it handle every situation perfectly? No. Those things aside its still a really cool story that I had fun with. The visuals were awesome including the facial animations, some of the best Ive seen. Quantic Dream continues to improve its formula, its not quite there yet but if they keep iterating they might come up with something really special in the future. 8.0/10

24. Cibele - PC
Completed 6/12/18
*Really didn't know much about this game, bought it on sales ages ago. What a deeply personal story that I was somehow able to relate to. I never had an online relationship to this degree but I could see how something like this could happen. I don't even know how to rate this game so I'm not going to. All I can say is that I'm glad I experienced it.

25. Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris - PS4
Completed 6/13/18
*I bought the special edition of Destiny 2 at launch because I was absolutely enamored with the first game. Boy was I disappointed. Both expansions released before I had even launched the game. I'm currently in a lull when I don't have anything new to play so I thought I would give this a try. Pleasantly surprised at how much fun I had with this. Its still the Destiny loop but I had fun shooting enemies and upgrading my gear. Going for Warmind next. 8.0/10

26. The Beginners Guide - PC
Completed 6/13/18
*Another game that I didn't know much about before I started. Not at all what I was expecting but I was very interested in throughout. After finishing it I wasn't really sure how I was supposed to feel. Is this a real thing or a joke? Is the person who made this game actually Coda himself? I was a bit confused but may do some research and see what is out there. Its been a few years so maybe Ill find something? Again, not sure how to rate this so I'm not going to.

27. Destiny 2: Warmind - PS4
Completed 6/14/18
*Very short but again running around shooting enemies is fun as hell. I finished the campaign missions without actually being aware of it. Afterwards it was just kind of over. Destiny still has a certain something that draws me back in, I will probably get Forsaken when it comes out this fall. 7.0/10

28. Vampyr - PS4
Completed 6/28/18
*This game received mixed reviews so I wasn't sure what to expect. Since we are currently in the summer lull I decided to go ahead and give this a shot. After finishing the game this morning I really enjoyed my time with it. I am even considering another play-through to get the platinum trophy. The general mood and setting of this game are very cool, and the citizen system is what makes this game different than other releases. Some minor gripes, no fast travel, combat is pretty basic and the game is very easy. I beat the final boss in less than a minute. I was also playing on what is considered the hardest difficulty. Interested to see if Don't Nod will turn this into a franchise. I would certainly be down for another story in this world. 8.0/10

29. The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit - PS4
Completed 6/30/18
*Some pretty cool moments in this little preview of LiS 2. The music is once again a highlight. Some of the characters just didn't seem real to me but its a minor gripe. Can't wait for the first episode of LiS 2, interested to see how this ties in with it. Not going to score this game, its almost like a playable teaser.

30. Persona 5 - PS4
Completed 8/4/18
*This is essentially my first Persona game. I tried playing Persona 4 Golden on Vita but just could not get into it. I wasn't sure if I was going to stick with this game either and almost quit after about 5 hours. Once I crossed the 8 hour mark I really started to find a groove, by the time I had finished the 1st palace I was hooked. Some of the writing was a bit off and there are some obvious cultural differences. I cant say enough about the music, these tracks were in my head all day everyday. Awesome game, absolutely loved it. 10/10

31. Heavy Rain - PS4
Completed 8/9/18
*I remember playing at least some of this game when it came out on PS4. Its been on my wish-list for a while and since it was free with PS+ I knew Id eventually get around to it this time. I want to start by saying that I actually liked the story even though it has many problems and unrealistic characters. The graphics were surprisingly good for a mid generation PS3 title as well. The negatives, however, are glaring and almost ruined this game for me. The game is quite buggy which was very surprising to me considering how long its been out. As I stated before some of the characters are just stupid and act completely unrealistic. My biggest problem with this game is the controls. They. Are. Awful. I only felt like I was partially in control of what I was doing. Some of the controller tilt movements were infuriating. I probably failed 10-15 times on several sections because its unclear just how long or how far you need to tilt the controller. Overall, I didn't hate this game even though my ending was dumb as hell. I'm glad to have crossed it off my backlog list and am ready to move on. 7.0/10

32. The Banner Saga - PS4
Completed 8/19/18
*Another older game that I decided to give another try. SRPG's may be my favorite genre so I wanted to give this another look. After finally figuring out what the stats meant I really started to like this game. It doesn't do a great job of explaining character stats so I felt like I stumbled through the first few hours. The story is pretty good with characters that have real motivations and relationships. I will probably pick up the trilogy at some point but I may take a break from the series for a short bit. 8.0/10

33. Adr1ft - PS4
Completed 8/20/18
*This game has been sitting in my backlog for quite a while. Finally decided to give it a go as I wait for the September onslaught of releases. I actually enjoyed the game quite a bit, the story was a bit piecemeal but the sprawling space-station was awesome to explore and navigate. I was hoping to give this a go in VR but it looks like the studio is now defunct. Fun game nonetheless. 8.0/10

34. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 - XB1
Completed 9/3/18
*So I'm going to say that I finished this game. There are a series of missions that are quite honestly very light on story. I had selected quick play by accident at first and started playing them out of order. I believe the game is still in early access but I definitely had some gripes about the level design. Its easy to get lost or turned around as there is no compass, mini map or way-point to guide you. The loot system is uninspired and the characters are mostly just walking talent trees. On the positive side, the combat is actually quite fun. There is an eerie sense of dread when you hear the war horn and you get rushed by a wall of enemies. I could see myself spending more time with this game if there were so many other great options out there. 6.5/10

35. Statik - PSVR
Completed 10/8/18
*This is a really clever game and cool implementation of VR. The puzzles are pretty fun to figure out but can sometimes be frustrating. The game does leave you in the dark if you're stuck so that can really slow the pace. I had to look up a solution on the very last puzzle and I still don't know where the answer was found. Actually had a ton of fun with this game although it was a bit short. 7.5/10

36. Spider-Man - PS4
Completed 10/10/18
*I can't say enough good things about how amazing this game is. The swinging, the visuals, the combat, the city, the VO were all incredible. Some of, if not, the best facial animation Ive ever seen in a game to date. Its not perfect as I did have a couple of complaints. The QTE's are not great but its a good alternative to cut scenes, I hope they can figure out how to avoid these in the sequel. The boss encounters have similar mechanics which didn't feel great. Fantastic story, I cant wait to see what they do with the sequel. I expect that it will come quicker than we think since they already have a foundation to build upon. This game only had a 3 year dev cycle so another iteration this gen is a possibility. 9.5/10

37. Shadow of the Tomb Raider - PS4
Completed 10/28/18
*This game has some pacing issues but I mostly enjoyed myself. Its my second favorite in the trilogy but living up to Rise would have been a tough task. The ending sequence visually is awesome. The level of detail in some of the crypts is absolutely amazing. The combat is still a weak point and the stealth mechanics never felt quite right. Lots to do in this game, if this came out in June I would probably spend more time with it. 8.0/10

38. Red Dead Redemption 2 - PS4
Completed 12/15/18
*Finishing this game left me with a feeling of profound sadness. I came to care about Arthur Morgan in a way that felt like saying goodbye to a friend. The mechanics and game-play were sometimes lacking but the world more than made up for it. This will go down as one of my all time favorite games and I don't think Ill go long without moseying through the wilderness once more. 10/10

39. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden - XB1
Completed 12/23/18
*Finished this just in time to make my top 10 list. I love SRPG's and this one did not disappoint. It added new elements that aren't typical for a game in this genre which was a nice change. The characters were pretty cool but not very fleshed out. The world was itself was very cool and one of my favorite aspects of the game. A local map in individual zones would be nice, I felt lost at times and wanted to check the map to make sure I didn't miss a nook with some much needed scrap or a medkit. I hope this does well enough for a bigger better sequel. 8.5/10

Quit List:

Darkest Dungeon - PS Vita - Man I really liked this game but it was just too grindy. I get what they were going for but some of the ways it forces players to juggle its systems starts to get old after a while. Solid strategic game play though. May come back to this someday.

Yakuza 0 - PS4 - I played this game for 8 hours. Got to chapter 4 which is just after the first Majima scene. I kept trying to convince myself that I was having fun, but I just wasn't. There were certain aspects of the story that I was really getting into but I just didn't have the will to keep going. Felt like an early lifecycle PS3 game and the save system, wtf.

The Long Dark - PS4 - Ive been following this game for quite some time. The survival genre has always been interesting to me so I bought this a few weeks ago after its PS4 release. This also happened to be about the time that Subnautica got its full release. After watching lets plays I really just wanted to play Subnautica and so The Long Dark just left me feeling unsatisfied. I hope to get back to it but Im putting it down for now.

Knack - PS4 - I thought I would give this another try since it was free on PS+. That was a mistake. Getting 2 shotted on normal difficulty halfway through the game is just stupid. You basically need to have a flawless run in boss fights which the souls series doesn't even ask of you. Fuck this game.

State of Decay 2 - XB1 - I heard a lot of positive impressions about this game from various gaming podcasts and thought this would be right up my alley. I don't really know what to say but its just not that much fun. Maybe I was doing something wrong but trying operate at night was awful, maybe that's the point? I don't know, but this game isn't for me.

Cuphead - XB1 - Bought this game because of how much praise it got. I didn't dislike the game, its absolutely gorgeous and the overall feel of it is dripping with personality. I also didn't want to beat my (cup?)head against the wall again and again to perfect each level. Ill keep it installed in case I want to get frustrated by how much I suck at this game.

Guacamelee - PS4 - I played this game for maybe an hour when it originally released and it just didn't grab me. Picked it back up because of the high praise Guacamelee 2 has been receiving. Got all the way to the final area and got extremely frustrated by the combat arenas. The enemies start hitting you very very hard. With projectiles flying all over the screen and enemies hitting you for a ton of damage I was just done with this game. I realized that I was just not having fun and bounced hard.

Ended 2016 with 40 games and 2017 with 37 games. Let's see if I can pull it off this year. I have a lot of shorter games on my to-do list this time around, so it might actually be the year I do it.

I'll do ratings for first time playthroughs of games. Anything without that is a replay of a game I've previously beaten. Edit: and for organizational purposes, I'm just gonna edit my first entry into my second post to give this post a bit more room to breathe.

#1. Super Mario Odyssey [Switch: 1/1/2018]: Surprising no one Mario Odyssey was one of my favorite games of last year. this time around I was going for as few boss battles as possible and managed to skip most of the moon.
#2. Dark Souls 3 [PS4: 1/2/2018]: Tried going for a more even build this time around since I always go Ultra Greatsword. For once the bosses weren't too much of a roadblock so I must be improving somewhat. Really good, not my favorite Souls game but it's become something of an annual game.
#3. Monster Rancher Explorer [GBC: 1/2/2018]: One of those games that I could never beat as a kid I have finally bested in like a day. Suck it childhood.
#4. DS2: Scholar of the First Sin [PS4: 1/13/2018]: I think DS2 is better than a lot of people would have you think, however I think the remix breaks a lot of what wasn't broken without fixing actual flaws. Having played DS3 recently however I can feel its aging already.
#5. Rhythm Thief & The Emperor's Treasure [3DS 1/13/2018]: The "what if" a Rhythm Heaven character got their own game. While the game was fun it is easily one of the sloppiest localisations I've seen in a while with some bad acting and the constant dialogue not matching the written lines.
#6. Psycho Soldiers [Vita 1/14/2018]: That was a thing.
#7. LOZ: LTTP [SNES Mini 1/20/2018]: It's LTTP. I beat it in 7.5 hours. I see the appeal of the older games.
#8 Clustertruck [PS4 1/24/2018]: One of the worse final bosses ever, in a game that should not have even had a boss.
#9. Monster Hunter World [PS4 2/11/2018]: After hating Monster Hunter for so long It finally clicked with me.
#10. Dissidia NT [PS4 2/13/2018]: The single player mode (when I was allowed to play it) was really fun. A shame that any desire to play the multiplayer was sated during the betas.
#11. Rime [PS4 2/20/2018]: A pleasant game. Puzzles were perfectly paced. I missed a lot of collectibles so I may not have made the connection to some of the imagery that they intended.
#12. Y's Origins [PS4 2/24/2018]: Y's ever the kings of the 8/10. All three campaigns were enjoyable but also get easier the further you go in.
#13. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow [DS 2/26/2018]: Started this game years ago, hated the grind to getting the good weapons. Fun but a step down from Aria.
#14. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia [DS 2/28/2018]: Man FUCK Dracula!
#15, Shadow of the Colossus [PS4 3/2/2018]: Solid remake. Will now spend the time necessary collecting shinies.
#16. A King's Tales FFXV [PS4 3/6/18]: It's a neat little beat-em-up. Reggie looks like a nerd.
#17. Ratchet and Clank (2016) [PS4 3/11/2018]: Wasn't ever a fan of the original games but I think this version is a bit more polished and I thought the game overall was fun.
#18. Breath of the Wild: Master Mode [Switch 3/26/2018]: I've softened on BotW as time goes on but it's still a really flawed game.
#19. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night [PS1: 3/31/2018]: It holds up well and I can see how it codified a genre.
#20 Yakuza 5 [PS3: 4/15/2018]: Down to the line before Yakuza 6 comes out. Enjoyed the game/story though Haruka's chapter kills any momentum.
#21. Metroid: Samus Returns [3DS: 4/16/2018]: Really liked Metroid 2 and replaying this game it is still fun.
#22. Yakuza 6 [PS4: 4/20/2018]: While their are definitely some growing pains with the new systems, Yakuza 6 is the first game in a while where I could not put the controller down because I needed to know.
#23. Kirby's Dreamland [3DS: 5/7/2018]: Kirby's a fun little game. got little to say on it.
#24. Pokemon Puzzle League [3DS: 5/9/2018]: Save scumming to defeat lance on hard yields no reward and I'm miffed.
#25. Mario Picross [3DS: 5/11/2018]:
#26. Twilight Princess Picross [3DS: 5/11/2018]: If you told me a week ago that I would dive really deep into Picross I would not have believed you.
#27. Rayman Legends [PS4: 5/24/2018]: Fun game. Musical levels are a nice reward for beating the worlds.
#28. Dark Souls: Remastered [PS4 5/28/2018]: Probably the game game I had started the most without ever finishing I can now say I've beaten it. It is fine though having played it sequels as well as watching multiple playthroughs has somewhat reduced my satisfaction. I.E. Being able to parry Gwyn to death before his theme even loops once was really dissatisfying.
#29. Code Realize: Guardian of Rebirth [Vita 5/30/2018]: Got one ending. May go back for others. Took two years to finish this game.
#30. Fortnite [PS4: 6/17/2018]: One my first game by hiding in a bush and shooting two people.
#31. Sonic Forces [PS4 6/19/18]: That was a fun 2 hours.
#32. Metroid Fusion [3DS 6/24/2018]: 2:51, 51%
#33. Zelda: Minish Cap [3DS 6/25/2018]: Probably the least memorable of the Zelda games but the Kinstone mechanic is fun and it's still good.
#34. Warioware [3DS 6/25/2018]: Still the best collection of mini-games to date.
#35. Pokemon TCG [3DS 6/26/2018]: I wish they would make a new game.
#36. Super Mario Land [3DS 6/29/2018]: I still like it.
#37. Fatal Twelve [Steam 7/1/2018]: Kickstarter game I backed but only this past week got to playing. I enjoyed it.
#38. Devil May Cry [PS3 7/2/2018]: Woof. That may be the textbook example of "Hasn't Aged Well". Glad to see where the patented awful shmups sections got their start.
#39. Devil May Cry 2 [PS3 7/3/2018]: I don't think this game is really any worse overall than the first game, but I can see why people like this one less.
#40. Devil May Cry 3 SE [PS3 7/5/2018]: It was fun but you can really tell that they were cutting corners with this game.
#41. Devil May Cry 4 SE [PS4 7/8/2018]: Man Nero is fun to play as. I can see why they decided to make him the main character of V.
#42. Journey [PS4 7/8/2018]: Accidentally skipped a third of the game, got paired up with a guy who was trying to go out of world and got wrecked by the end game snakes. I'm sad.
#43. Portal [Steam 7/9/2018]: Still a great puzzle game.
#44. Mario Hoops: 3 on 3 [WiiU 7/10/2018]: What a weird game that exists.
#45. Hollow Knight [Switch 7/13/2018]: Hollow Knight is a good Metroid-vania, but there are some control foibles and even with quick travel it's a pain to get around the map. Most of the bosses are fun except for that one battle near the end where you just fight 6 of the same enemy.
#46. Octopath Traveler [Switch 7/22/2018]: Probably the most middling game this year: For every bit of this game's visual charm there is some UE effect that drowns it out, the game mechanics are fun but the structure of this game makes playing far too repetive especially when it comes to grinding in the early parts of each chapter.
#47. Sonic Mania+ [Switch 7/22/2018]: I never cared much for 2D Sonic games but there is a lot of care put into this game that clearly shines through.
#48. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance [Steam 7/24/2018]: This is still probably my favorite Platinum game tied only by NieR.
#49. Malicious Fallen [PS4 7/25/2018]: A fun arcadey game where you megaman your way through powering up until the final boss.
#50. Kirby's Return to Dreamland [WiiU 7/30/2018]: While Squeak Squad started the trend, RtD was the game the cemented that every Kirby was going to be the exact same game over and over going forward.
#51. Kirby Triple Deluxe [3DS 7/30/2018]: Case in Point.
#52. BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle [Switch 7/30/2018]: Played a lot of this game when it first came out but only finished the story mode now. Fun game actually got into multiplayer unlike every other fighting game.
#53. Megaman 3 [PS4 8/18/2018]: Man you could tell even back in the 80's that Capcom would do anything to reuse assets.
#54. Bloodborne [PS4 8/19/2018]: First time going for a skill build and easily the fastest I've ever beaten Bloodborne at just two days.
#55. Rise of the Tomb Raider [PS4 8/22/2018]: Fine game. Had some really fun enemy encounters near the end. Story was okay, nothing revolutionary. Got Major Uncharted 2 vibes in the early game.
#56. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End [PS4 8/25/2018]: Weirdly enough this game and Tomb Raider work really well back-to-back, it was an enjoyable end to Nate's adventures but at the end the shooting sections still go on way too long.
#57. Yakuza Kiwami 2 [PS4 9/1/2018]: The Yakuza games are great little to say there, but much like Kiwami you can really tell which of the sidequests are added and which are from the original.
#58. WarioWare: Gold [3DS 9/6/2018]: Everything WarioWare in one game. It's great.
#59. Hyrule Warriors DE [Switch 9/9/2018]: 3DS version died so I needed my forever game again.
#60. Warioland 3 [3DS 9/17/2018]: Blast from the past, the final boss is a lot easier than when I was a kid. I really like how they're are no lives and it has similar progression to that of a Metroidvania.
#61. Xenoblade 2: Torna [Switch 9/19/2018]: Definitely an improvement over the base game, but I have to point out that barring main game progress with side quests is kind of a dick move.
#62. Ace Combat LH+ [3DS 9/21/2018]: That game is really fun until that one mission that took me almost as long as the entire rest of the game to beat.
#63. Kingdom Hearts Union X [iOS 9/27/2018]: Finally got all caught up with the story. Pour one out for Strelitzia.
#64. Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix [10/1/2018]: I need III now.
#65. Dragon Quest [iOS 10/1/2018]: That is a classic, really charming.
#66. LiEat [Steam 10/7/2018]: That was cute, really easy and short but therre are two more games with it so hey.
#67. Kingdom Hearts II [PS4 10/30/2019]: Platinumed

Played:
  1. Horizon Zero Dawn [PS4] (01/07) - Full story, all cauldrons/bandit camps/blazing sun marks. Already had platinum trophy. This was a second play-through for me, mainly to relive the story and to get to the DLC area. Game was one of my favourite games of 2017 and the second play-through didn't change my mind having now played all the other great games of 2017.
  2. Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds [PS4] (01/13) - All trophies. Story wasn't as strong as the base game, but was a great DLC nevertheless.
  3. Oxenfree [PS4] (01/19) - Platinum trophy (three playthroughs). Had decent music, story was OK. The pacing of the game felt a little slow sometimes, like there was too much backtracking. Not a game I would recommend personally as there really wasn't much gameplay, but I didn't dislike it.
  4. Cat Quest [PS4] (01/20) - Platinum trophy in 8 hours. Enjoyable game with fun combat, a little repetitive but still a nice smaller game at a decent price.
  5. Hue [PS4] (01/22) - All trophies. Puzzle platformer which I got free with PS+. I liked the art style and the quite unique play style of the puzzles.
  6. God of War I [PS3] (01/28) - Platinum trophy. Game hasn't aged well, in my opinion. I can appreciate how this game would have been amazing at the time though. The UI and menus in particular feels very dated, likewise despite being the HD version of the PS2 game there were instances of some cutscenes that were PS2 quality that felt a little jarring. Regardless, I enjoyed playing the game and it's made me look forward to playing the rest of the trilogy.
  7. God of War II [PS3] (02/03) - Platinum trophy. Huge upgrade over the first game. Some of the controls were adjusted a little over the original which took a little getting used too at first, however the game felt like a huge improvement and I can see why some people regard it as the best in the series.
  8. God of War III [PS4] (02/11) - Platinum trophy. The first thing that stood out to me with this game is how awesome the soundtrack is. The Cronos boss fight was epic, probably the biggest scale boss fight I've played in a game. Now I'm ready and looking forward to God of War 4.
  9. Knack [PS4] (02/14) - Completed the story. Such an average game at best. You can sum the majority of the game as a series of different rooms you walk through with a few spaced out random enemies which you dodge and kill. Rinse and repeat. That's the game. Also pretty much every chapter you start out as little Knack, which is the weak and boring and then by the end of the chapter you are the big Knack. Again, rinse and repeat.
  10. SteamWorld Dig [PS4] (02/16) - Completed 1 playthrough. I played that flash game called Motherload as a kid, and have also played the PS3/PS4 remake of that game Super Motherload. This game is just like that but with more depth. I actually really enjoyed this. I plan to buy and play the sequel once I can pick it up in the sale, as I know a lot of people prefer the sequel.
  11. Ratchet & Clank 1 [PS3] (02/20) - Platinum trophy. The PS4 version of Ratchet is the only R&C game I had played prior to this, and I absolutely loved the gameplay of that game. Though this game hasn't aged well I still enjoyed the gameplay and it was interesting to see what had been changed and cut when comparing against the remake.
  12. Ratchet & Clank 2 [PS3] (02/25) - Platinum trophy. Big improvement over the previous game. I particularly liked the inclusion of upgradable weapons. One area I didn't enjoy as much was the little space shooting sections as the controls were a little janky.
  13. Ratchet & Clank 3 [PS3] (03/03) - Platinum trophy. Game felt a little more linear than the previous game. I liked the whole having a motherbase aspect of the game, somewhat like the Normandy in Mass Effect. The entire UI had a piss yellow filter applied on top that was a bit excessive - Maybe this was something that was more of a problem with the PS3 version than the original.
  14. Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction [PS3] (03/04) - Full playthrough. Leap in graphics, especially with physics where the boxes could tumble over. 2 weapons which could only be used with Six-axis were introduced. I never used these weapons. It took a little while to get used to how things looked at first, as the colours in the original trilogy were more bright and cartoony. With this game they felt a little washed out and like they were going for a more realistic look. Some levels were ugly, especially the dinosaur planet. One area where it felt the game stepped up was the story - in the original trilogy the story felt very secondary where the humour in particular felt dated, childish. The story in this game felt more mature and fleshed out.
  15. Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty [PS3] (03/04) - Full playthrough. Short game where the only new addition was the ability to move objects with your wrench. Lacked the majority of aspects from the previous titles (gold bolts, etc). Felt more like a cut level from the previous game.
  16. Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time [PS3] (03/11) - Platinum trophy. Wow, what a game. Without question the best Ratchet game of the bunch. The graphics felt like a step up from Tools of Destruction where the game actually felt like it was built for the PS3. I loved the hover boots, they added a fun bit of mobility to the game. Also the Clank sections weren't boring for once.
  17. Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus [PS3] (03/17) - Platinum trophy. A lot shorter than the previous game and didn't really introduce many new aspects that the previous games didn't have. I wasn't a huge fan of the darker tone of the levels.
  18. Prototype 2 [PS3] (03/21) - Platinum trophy. Average game at best. Nothing much to say about this game, it just felt like a basic version of the early Infamous games (which are superior) to me.
  19. Far Cry 5 [PS4] (04/02) - Platinum trophy.
  20. God of War [PS4] (04/24) - Platinum trophy. Game of the year.
  21. Life is Strange: Before the Storm [PS4] (04/28) - Platinum trophy.
  22. A Way Out [PS4] (05/01) - Platinum trophy.
  23. World of Warcraft (PC) - Several hours sank into this game. Levelled a couple of alts from 100 to 110, tried the new raid, etc.
  24. Detroit: Become Human [PS4] (05/28) - Platinum trophy.
  25. Tera [PS4] (06/17) - Got to max level.
  26. Burnout Paradise Remastered [PS4] (07/15) - Platinum trophy.
  27. The Order: 1886 [PS4] (08/04) - Platinum trophy.
  28. Gravity Rush 2 [PS4] (08/21) - Platinum trophy. Also completed the free DLC.
  29. Destiny 2 [PS4] (09/02) - Got a character to max level.
  30. Alienation [PS4] (09/03) - Bunch of co-op multiplayer.
  31. Marvel's Spider-Man [PS4] (09/07) - Platinum trophy.
  32. Mad Max [PS4] (09/13) - Full walkthrough. Close to platinum.
  33. Color Guardians [PS Vita] (09/29) - Platinum trophy.
  34. Tom Clancy's The Division [PS4] (09/30) - Platinum trophy.
  35. Assassin's Creed Odyssey [PS4] (10/14) - Platinum trophy.
  36. Lara Croft GO [PS Vita] (10/17) - Platinum trophy.
  37. The Last Guardian (10/21) - Full playthrough.
  38. Red Dead Redemption 2 [PS4] (11/02) - Full playthrough.
  39. Spyro the Dragon [PS4] (11/15) - Platinum trophy.
  40. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! [PS4] (11/18) - Platinum trophy.
  41. Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon [PS4] (11/21) - Platinum trophy.
  42. Burly Men At Sea [PS Vita] (11/23) - Platinum trophy.
  43. PlayStation VR Worlds [PSVR] (11/24) - Played through The London Heist, did the ocean dive and all the mini-games.
  44. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom [PS4] (12/10) - Platinum trophy.
  45. A Hat in Time [PS4] (12/15) - Platinum trophy.
  46. Astro Bot Rescue Mission [PSVR] (12/22) - Finished story.
  47. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus [PS Vita] (12/24) - Platinum trophy.
  48. Accounting+ [PSVR] (12/25) - Platinum trophy.
  49. Super Exploding Zoo! [PS Vita] (12/25) - Platinum trophy.

Already finished something to start the New Year! Hoping to finally complete 52 in a year.

Game #1: The Silver Case[Complete]
What a crazy game this was. I really enjoy the style and wackiness this game offers but I had quite a few moments where I had no idea what even happened. Thankfully this has report cases that fill in a lot of the gaps left by the main game. The music is quite good but the gameplay is mediocre though I don't expect much from a visual novel.

Currently Playing:
Nier Automata
Crash Trilogy(I will be counting these as three separate games)
Ghost Recon: Wild Lands
Steins Gate 0
DMC
Gravity Rush 2
Fire Emblem Binding Blade
Ni No Kuni
Final Fantasy XIV MSQ

There's a lot more but for now I've made a lot of progres in these titles so I'll be finishing them first.

Depression has kept me from finishing a lot of games the last 5 or so years. I think It's time I defeat it and let myself enjoy my only hobby that brings me any kind of happiness.

Me - 15 / Depression - 37

1.) VS. Super Mario Bros. (No Warp) - January 8th - ★★★★☆½ - 1 Hour or More - (Switch)

Not much to say about this one. It's basically Super Mario Bros. but with a few power-ups and enemies moved to make the game harder for arcades. It also includes some Super Mario Bros 2 (The Lost Levels) levels to increase the difficulty. It's an interesting kind of "hard mode" for the original. Typically I can speed through SMB1 (No warp) but this one gave me some trouble. 7-3 is the hardest level in the game, In my honest opinion, but it was a fun romp that made for what I thought it was. A harder version of the original, which is a classic.

2.) Thumper - January 14th - ★★★★☆ - 5 Hours or More - (Switch)

What a strange game. Touting a genre like "Rhythm Violence" I can't say it's wrong. What an intense and stressful, anxiety raising game. Complete focus and hearing cues are essential to finish this game. A very out there rhythm game that takes chances and nails them with it's hard hitting soundtrack, crazy visuals, and simple but difficult gameplay. As a rhythm game lover, it was an extreme but wonderful departure from the norm.

3.) Kamiko (All 3 Characters) - January 14th - ★★★☆☆½ - 3 Hours or More - (Switch)

I feel like this game is basically a very simplified Zelda. There's very simple puzzles and a very simple combat system, it's a very short but sweet game. You can beat it under 40 minutes easily, so it's a good game for just going through it every so often. 3 Different characters play a bit differently (solely in attack method), but the game remains mostly the same. Would love to see a sequel that maybe makes it a bit more substantial, but for only 5$, I'm not all that disappointed for the decent amount of fun it provided. It also has a really great soundtrack.

4.) Picross <S> (Only normal Picross mode finished, no Mega) - January 13th - ★★★☆☆ - 15 Hours or More - (Switch)

Ah... this one. I love Picross, but unfortunately S was a huge disappointment. There's a lot of quantity, but some fundamental gameplay changes makes the game too boring to play. The ability to check for mistakes is a nice one, but it can easily be abused to fill in any line or two you want as long as you can remember (or take a screenshot), and there's no penalty for automatically corrected mistakes so there's no time added due to mistakes, which also makes puzzles where that's a factor feel more frivolous, due to being able to just get sloppy and make many mistakes, which just get fixed by the game for you. I love picross, but this one just wasn't worth it for me.

5.) World of Goo - January 14th - ★★★★☆½ - 5 hours or More - (Switch)

A great, great puzzle game from back in the Wii days (When I first played it!). I really loved it when I was a teen and figured I'd get it again on the Switch, and boy, it's a good puzzle game. Everything works perfectly as you'd expect. The only real issue I have is that I wish there was any kind of completion reward or the puzzles could be a bit more varied than they already are, but it's truly a puzzle game you should not pass up.

6.) Snake Pass - January 15th - ★★★☆☆ - 5 Hours or More - (Switch)

This started as a game I really liked, but as I played it my interest waned heavily. It took me since it came out till the date now to finish it, because by world 3 it just somehow lost what I really enjoyed about it. I didn't have an issue with the controls, they were fun, and moving is fun. I think it may have been the drastically different level design in world 3 and 4 where there was maybe too many ways to die. It's a fun game, but I can't really recommend going for 100% either, as it makes the game crawl to a halt, I finished the first 2 worlds 100% before just giving up on the 3rd, due to it becoming frustratingly dull to look for everything. I also think that the lack of enemies is a great thing, but some kind of boss battle at the end (Regardless if it was super easy) would have been a great ending rather than the lackluster one that's there. It just kinda... ends, and I was disappointed.

7.) Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (100%) - ★★★☆☆ - 35 Hours or More - (Switch)

It was very hard to give this game a score I'm happy with. Sometimes the game just is no fun at all in it's missions, other times I'm having a great time and really enjoying it. I decided to give it a 6 because there's just too many flaws with the game. Mario can't be removed from the party, you have to have a Rabbid character, you don't get a ton of characters till the game is half over, you can't undo movement like other Strategy games (Fire Emblem) which can result in you feeling forced to move then blindly hope you can hit. You move on a grid based system but it's impossible to tell how many "squares" something is away, and some "Challenges" that involve you usually getting flung to 3 specific spots on the map are basically trial and error, and no fun at all. They seem trivial at best and only make 100%ing the game more of a slog. I really wish a lot of these problems were fixed, and what's there works really well for the most part, but it's just filled with confusing design choices that frustrated me.

8.) Donkey Kong Country - ★★★★☆½ - 1 Hour 40 Minutes (76%) - (3DS)

I started this run of one of my favorite games as a 100% run, but dropped it due to how cryptic some bonuses are in DKC. It's not really a fault of the game considering all 100% does is make you feel good, and give you 1-UPs. Bonuses aren't extra content unlockers like in DKC2 and 3, so I was fine with dropping it. I still love the music, level design, level themes, I love everything about this game still. I like to think DKC 1 went for the most realistic art style, and I still think it holds up today. No doubt. The only real issue I have with the game is the that the bosses are absolutely lame and recycled many times. Still a fantastic platformer.

9.) DOOM (2016) - ★★★★☆½ - 15 hours or More (Ultra-Violence) - (Switch)

Rip and Tear, the game. Don't stop moving or you will die. Move, shoot, aim, jump, dodge, to win in fights. It absolutely feels amazing to play, as long as you can keep up. Finding secrets, going through the different levels, fighting tough bosses near the end... and the music. My god does the music give this game it's flow. When the music pumps up you know what to do. You like.. snap into a fast and combative thought process that's just beautiful. Also, rewarding the player with HP at low health with any kill is a brilliant way to have come-backs that feel earned. Glory Kills are always available, but in a pinch, you may over-extend your damage and just end up killing the only thing that could save you, luckily, they thought that out and basically said you get another chance if you can manage just one more kill before you get killed, you're saved.

10.) Axiom Verge - ★★★★☆ - 9 Hours 11 Minutes (79% Items, 95% Map, 10 Deaths) - (Switch)

Axiom Verge is a Metroidvania that I like, but don't love. It has a lot of collectibles but they don't do much. It has a lot of enemies, but none of them feel fun to fight (excluding bosses). So what is there to like about the game then? Well, finding secrets in the game are quite hard and if exploring is your thing, then it's definitely for you. Finding new weapons and slight damage/HP/range boosts are what makes the exploring worth it, not really anything else. The game has mostly good music and I like the graphics, even if areas seem very samey. Overall it's not a bad game in the slightest. I just think combat and too many weapons make the game a bit less interesting, especially since most weapons you get are pretty useless IMHO.

11.) The End Is Nigh - February 4th - ★★★★☆½ - 7 Hours 55 Minutes (82%, 2363 Deaths) - (Switch)

This game... what a good platformer. A tough as nails platformer like Super Meat Boy, but with level progression through side to side screens instead of a map. All levels are great teaching tools and I never once felt frustrated out of learning how I was supposed to do things. With good enough instincts most levels were easy to figure out and finish on the first time. I'd highly suggested if you want a hard platformer much like Super Meat Boy, this is a perfect spiritual successor. I actually love this game. All the secrets, the minigames and the final 4 worlds had such a neat payoff for finding secrets. I know for a fact over some dry spells for new games, I'll probably try to 100% this one.

y4r6Ojb.jpg

12.) Azure Striker: Gunvolt - ★★★★☆½ - 11 Hours 26 Minutes - (Switch)

I was always interested in this game, I assumed it was similar to the Megaman X series, and it somewhat is. It has dashing and shooting, but has a different kind of mechanic for dealing damage. As you shoot things you "tag" them and when an enemy is tagged you hold an attack button that will send lightning into them, dealing quick damage over time, it creates an interesting different feel to old MMX games. Using your electricity (the same one you use to damage things after tagging them) can also make you fall slowly to make it through tricky paths. There's also a big bunch of upgrades you can make by getting bonus crafting items after beating levels. You also level up by beating enemies and bosses but it never felt like it affected much. Either way, the game is great and is a lot of fun to complete and even play. Add in level ranks (C to S+) makes it fun to replay levels.

chW1ZCh.jpg

13.) Crash Bandicoot (Remake) - February 17th - ★★★★☆½ - (104%) - (PS4)

This was a game that I played in my childhood but never beat due to the difficulty. Coming back to the remaster, a better gamer and a much better platformer than before, I managed to 104% it. (Finished Stormy Ascent too) and now I have strange feelings about the game. It's certainly still the hardest of the original Crash Trilogy, I remember that much correctly, however I feel now, that as a grownup it was mostly just pattern recognition that was required to beat the game, and some good platforming and patience. These things can and are hard when you take the newly added Time Trials into account, (Which I also did, getting at least gold on every level) since they are very much cycle based levels, so you have to basically remember each section perfectly and do a perfect run to get a gold or better relic. I do think it's the worst of the original crash trilogy, with the least variety in level themes and the levels being very strict in how to play and enjoy them, vs how they are in the newer games, which are more free-form back to front levels rather than side scrolling platforming levels mostly. Either way, it's a great game, but maybe it shows that it's the first in the series a bit too much, and clearly says "I'm the most different, and that can make me the worst or best depending on the person."

B9uIHt1.jpg

14.) Bayonetta - February 14th - ★★★★☆½ - 10 hours or more - (Switch)

Bayonetta is a game I've been interested in for a long time. I actually bought it on PS3 back when I had one, and I never actually played it. I sold it new with my PS3 when I bought my 3DS, so it continued to elude me. Other than the drab colors, I really loved this game. It's hard, but stylish, fun, and action-packed. Also extremely goofy and I love it. The highlights for me were the last few levels, due to the changes in levels, I love levels that break up the tried and true gameplay loop. Either way, I love everything about this game. From Witch Time to Wicked Weaves, I just love everything about the game.... Except for maybe Luka. I don't like him much.

ZVhrsSH.jpg

15.) Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (Remake) - February 22nd - ★★★★☆½ - (102%) - (PS4)

This is the Crash I played most growing up. Having 100%'ed it only a while ago (Maybe 2014?) I was looking forward to doing it again, with Time Trials like Crash 1 before it. It's just as good as I remember. Some hitboxes are a bit janky, but I'm wondering if that's the remake. Either way, the game drops the pattern recognition design that the first one based most of it's levels off of for more of a focus on the back to front level design with typical enemies just coming after you and normal pits. This is also the start of the series getting a little more invested in gimmick levels, which I'm not exactly a big fan of (Jetpacks, riding on the Bears like the warthogs in 1) but the actual normal levels hold up, as do the secrets. IT makes me excited to go back into 3, which I thought was the weakest due to too many gimmick levels, but we'll see how I feel about that.... either way, I did have an issue with the time trials in this game. These levels seemed based on times using a pretty tough technique to pull off. You have to slide jump, and spin at the apex of your jump, which gives you a really high or long jump which lets you skip big sections of platforming. The issue with that is that you have to really grind your thumb against 3 buttons to do it, and doing that repeatedly is really tough on your thumb. Mine actually got really sore, and started developing a callous. I'm gonna have to take a break now, but it was fun regardless.

16.) Bayonetta 2 - February 25th - ★★★★★ - 15 hours or more - (Switch)

I actually love this game. It's more exhilarating to play and way more polished. The story is reaaaally good and I love it. It's basically Bayonetta 1 but improved in every way (Maybe minus the music). I just recommend it 100%.

17.) Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon - March 16th - ★★★☆☆ - 39 Hours 55 Minutes (Switch)

I feel like I've missed something between Bayo 2 and this, but anyway, I really am conflicted about this game. It's got serviceable gameplay and I like some story elements, but the characters and polish really could have used more work. On the absolute positive side, the story picks up great near the end, the music is awesome and the art is gorgeous. I feel like all in all it was a fun game with plenty to do. A small "Pet" system where you get creatures you can use kinda like Pokemon, and other actual human party members a plenty, all the art and music is great, and the characters/story are okay to great. Gameplay is a weird mix of an Action RPG and what I'd say Dynasty Warrior games feel like. I like it though. Overall I feel like the game could have been a billion times better with less fan service and more character development and more interesting rewards for the affection system, which was a large draw for me, considering it features mostly female characters.

18.) WonderGirl and the Dragons Trap

19.) Kirby Star Allies 100%

20.) Brave Fencer Musashi

21.) Monster Hunter World

1.) Xenoblade Chronicles 2
2.) Nights of Azure 2
3.) Fate/Extella

1: The Sexy Brutale (2/1 - 5h 23m)
Fun game with a very nice story and some interesting mechanics. Game is a little bit easy though.

2: Quantum Break (6/1 - 9h)
Interesting game with some very cool effects and combat mechanics. The game did feel a bit clunky at times for me though (played with mouse + keyboard). I liked the idea of mixing a game and a TV show.

3: Destiny 2 (7/1 h??)
Just beat the campaign of destiny 2. Always loved the game feel of the weapons and movement and the 2nd game feel even better, more so on PC. The campaign was decent enough but i liked the environments more in the first game.

4: What Remains of Edith Finch (7/1 1h 32m)
Played the game in one sitting. Very interesting story and a very cool way telling the story using ingame text and how you interact with the ingame world in various ways.

5: Subsurface Circular (15/1 2h)
Interesting take on a text-based adventure game done by the developers behind Thomas was alone. Liked the simple but stylish graphics and the story was pretty decent.

6: Slay the Spire (23/1 61h)
Love this game, it is my new go to game for a short break that used to be taken up by Binding of Issac. Finally beat the last boss with the Silet.

7. Rime (3/3 4h 20m)
Beautiful game, loved the artstyle and music. The story was also pretty good :) The pc version seems to have some performance problems tbh but it was not a big problem. The puzzles was okay but a bit too easy to solve.

8. Oxenfree (15/3 ~3h)
Very interresting game, loved the way you use the Radio in the game and the voice work was very good. To bad the game have performance issues and long load times on Switch.

9. Night in the Woods(20/3 ~5h)
Very good game. Loved the art, story and very charming and lifelike characters you meet in the game :)

10. God of War
Such a great game! Loved the story, great art and amazing combat(played on the hardest)! Graphic and performance was great on my PS4 Pro

11. FAR: Lone Sails
Amazing game, if you are fan of Inside you will feel right at home in this game. I love when stories are told by gameplay and the art instead of text or voice over. Amazing art in this game.

12. Yokas Island Express
Very fun game. An interesting mix of pingbal mechanics and platformer gameplay. Lovely art as well.

13. A Hat in Time (11/7 12h)
Loved this game and went for 100%. Some very interesting levels. The camera and controls could be a bit annoying at time and it felt like the level of polish was better in some of the later worlds.

14. Destiny 2 - Curse of Osiris (11/9)around 3 hours)
Went back to destiny 2 with the new Forsaken expansion and haven't played the other dlc. This dlc was kinda interesting. Loved the infinite forest it was a pretty unique setting.

I'm a king at dropping games (which you know, is fine. Just means I only beat games I truly enjoy), so I probably won't come close to 52, but who knows.
(date format is DD/MM, just in case)

1. Nier: Automata (01/01) - 33 hours
Started this back in November, had been playing it on and off. Could not put it down during most of route C though, incredible build-up to a fantastic ending. 10/10, its defaults are easily outweighed by being the first game to make me cry. Off to a great start :D

2. Sonic Mania (07/01) - 7 hours
I got stuck at the Oil Ocean boss (it's so badly designed...) for a while, but after getting past it the rest of the game was a lot of fun. I'm not really into Sonic, that was the first Sonic game I ever beat, nice experience.

3. Metroid: Samus Returns (14/01) - 12 hours
Got this game for Christmas. The start felt a bit slow and generic but it grew up on me as it went on. I'm still not a fan of the art direciton but the gameplay felt just like the previous 2D Metroid games :D

4. 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (27/01) - 20 hours or so, I'm not sure
This was the second time I played through this game. I loved it the first time and maybe even more the second! The themes, the structure, the foreshadowing and the overall plot all work together to create what I think is my favorite narrative video game experience ever. It's got flaws, but the story keeps you hooked, dropping tiny hints until the final twist ties it all together. It's fucking good.

5. Celeste (27/01) - 7 hours
I rarely buy games day-one, but boy I'm so happy I did it for Celeste. I love fast-paced platformers and the game delivered on all my expectations, plus it came with a heartfelt story that carefully blends supernatural elements with very real themes and issues. I haven't stopped playing it since I beat it, and I'm gonna as close to 100% as I can :D

6. 10 Second Ninja X (09/02) - 3 hours
Fun little fast-paced platformer. I haven't got much to say about it, the concept is fun (you've got 10 seconds to beat each level) but the small story parts were unnecessary and killed the pace.

7. Splasher (06/04) - 5 hours
As a huge fan of 2D platformers, I went into Splasher with high expectations... and left a bit disappointed. The artstyle is very generic and overall, the game lacks identity. Having to run around the lobby between every level got old very quickly. The gameplay itself is fine but the level design never quite reaches the heights of other indie titles, and the air control feels slippery. The ink system wasn't enough for me to get hooked.

I'll throw myself in here. Idk how many I'm gonna beat due to life and such but I'm gonna see what I can do to get through my backlog.

This will be a list of games that I finish and past games that I go for Platinum/100% for.

X. Title (Date Finished M/D) [Playtime if possible] <Rating>

Completed:
1. Final Fantasy XV
PS4 (1/6) [38:47] <8/10>
Story got weak in the middle (post Chapter 8) but I really liked the ending and how things wrapped up! Gameplay was fun and I love the characters and the whole "Road trip with the bros" vibe. The journey was great and definitely gonna try to wrap up the postgame for the Platinum!
Update: Platinum Trophy achieved! (1/9) [63:00]

2. Destiny 2 (Platinum)
PS4 (1/13) [109:01] <8/10>
Beat the game in September but just achieved the Platinum. Micro transactions aside, Destiny 2 is still a fun game that's worth returning to. Gunplay is still solid and the initial grind is still enjoyable. While the endgame definitely needs work, I never got so frustrated with Destiny 2 to put it down unlike Destiny 1. Hope this year can give more reasons to return and sink more time into it!

3. Horizon Zero Dawn
PS4 (1/21) [63:14] <9/10>
Beat the Campaign and achieved the Platinum at the same time. Bought this launch day but was quickly overshadowed by Zelda and Persona 5. After all my friends told me to play it already, I gave in and I'm so happy I did! The story and world background were incredibly well done and the gameplay is an absolute blast once you get into it. To be honest, the first 30ish hours for me were weird cause almost all the beast scared me to fight but once the concept of deconstructing your enemy took root, I was hooked. Some of the most addicting combat I've played since Doom. This definitely would've made my GOTY list last year if I played it and I can't wait to see what Guerilla has in store next for the sequel!

4. Celeste
Switch (2/2) [8:47] <9/10>
Your first big GOTY contender is here folks! Tight controls compliment difficult but fair gameplay all while throwing on an excellent retro art style with full beautiful hand drawn scenes as well. Story is well told and the characters are all quirky and fun in their own way. The laid back nature ensures you never feel frustrated with the game with me never getting mad once. All deaths feel like learning experiences and none of the courses get to Meat Boy levels insanity through the initial play through. I still have to finish a couple more things postgame wise (you'll see when you get there) but the game is an absolute pleasure to play. For $20, it's definitely worth your time.

5. Bayonetta (Replay)
Switch (2/21) [12:44] <7/10>
While the base gameplay of Bayonetta 1 is fun, man does this game have its problems. Insta-death QTE's, immediately getting attacked from cutscenes, and unfair enemy attacks with no readability are just some of the problems here. Some parts of the game will make you irritated but the game is still worth a romp through for the characters, soundtrack, and style it has. While I wish the game held up better, it's still worth going through so at the very least you can appreciate the much better and improved sequel even more.

6. Kirby: Planet Robobot
3DS (3/4) [6:45] <8/10>

7. Bayonetta 2 (Replay)
Switch (3/10) [8:47] <10/10>
This sequel takes everything that made first mediocre and makes it so much better. The story is understandable (to some degree), action is more fluid, and everything looks and feels so much better. While the difficulty of the game itself is dialed back a bit, getting pure Platinum has been made harder through time and combo scores and balances really well. This is one of the best action games available. Buy Bayo 1&2 and see why these games are loved the way they are.

Current:
Horizon Zero Dawn: Frozen Wilds
Xenoblade 2
Persona 5 (Platinum Run)
Monster Hunter World
Dragonball FighterZ

Planned:
FFXV DLC Episodes
Battle Chef Brigade
Parappa the Rappa
The Order 1886

Gonna give it a go. Finished 52 last year but probably won't happen again unless my division addiction ends.

January:

1: Farpoint (02/01/2018) - PS4 Pro & PSVR - 9/10 - 5 Hours

Wasn't really feeling the first half of this game. The enemies and environs seemed super generic and I was just so tuned out with the story, the only shining light was playing with the PS Aim Controller which made all my childhood fantasies of actually being 'in' Time Crisis at the arcades a reality.

Luckily the second half of the game completely changed things around and I ended up liking it an awful lot, aside from RE7 I'd say this is PSVR's 'killer app'

2: DOOM VFR (03/01/2018) - PS4 Pro & PSVR - 8/10 - 3 Hours

A great showcase for VR marred by control issues. Tried playing with the intended 2 x Move Controllers but kept getting frustrated in every fight as it felt so awkward, switched over to the PS Aim Controller and the fights were just like DOOM 2016 except you were actually in there staring up at them.

The downside to the PS Aim controller is that the game clearly wasn't built for it so outside of combat it's awkward at times to interact with various interfaces and terminals.

3. Accounting Plus (03/01/2018) - PS4 Pro & PSVR - 7/10 - 1 Hour 15 Minutes

Got this after the wacky Game Awards presentation. I've played Stanley Parable so knew what to expect a bit but even so this is just bananas, that's the only way to describe it.

Like a crazy fever dream, going from one bizarre scene to the next. Some of the humour fails to land but often it had me in stitches. It's very short but I'd still say it's worth it for the £8 or so that I paid.

4. Thumper (06/01/2018) - PS4 Pro & PSVR - 8/10 - 5 Hours

In VR as well it's genuinely mind blowing, after the first half of the game I think my brain use kind of got used to all the sensory/auditory experiences it was experiencing but at the start it was truly crazy, one of the most eye opening experiences I've ever had in gaming for sure.

Didn't find it too tough at all, think it's perhaps easier in VR than 2D, I didn't have too many troubles until Level 5 when I begun to fail a few sections here and there, I failed more sections as the game reached its conclusion in Level 9 but still never really got stuck at any point.

5. Gorogoa (07/01/2018) - iOS - 9/10 - 3 Hours

I hardly play any mobile games but I read the reviews for this and decided to give it a go.

The puzzles are clever without being too obtuse or pretentious, every time I found myself stumped I just zoomed in/out on every tile, tapped everything possible and see if I could drag anything out of a tile or overlap it with another. I found the solution relatively quickly and before frustration set in, it had that eureka moment about it when you get a question right, getting that instant satisfaction and making you feel incredibly clever for cracking it.

It's so beautiful in motion too, like a big picture book. I didn't expect the sound or music to be as impactful as it is either, it's still subtle for sure, but it goes so nicely with the hand drawn tiles and animations.

6. L.A. Noire (11/01/2018) - Switch - 9/10 - 29 Hours

Had fond memories playing the original release back in 2011 and seeing as we've not got a sequel since this'll do nicely in the meantime.

It's a divisive game, but I really enjoyed the original - warts and all. What I didn't expect was to actually like it more than I did the first time around, huge swathes of the original like the Traffic and Arson sections I remembered really dragging on but - whilst Traffic still had pacing issues - I absolutely adored to overarching conspiracy of Arson and how everything ends up.

It still has its problems but there's nothing else like it, no other game allows you to get fully immersed and feel like you're a detective as much as this one, really hope there's a sequel in the works.

7. What Remains of Edith Finch (12/01/2018) - PC - 8/10 - 2 Hours

I really enjoyed it overall, but it didn't blow my socks off. The beginning before you reach the house really reminded me of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter but yeah, once you're in there they're rather different to say the least. I love how the house felt all interconnected with hidden passageways and trapdoors, the look of it was very Tim Burton as well.

But the meat of the game was the vignettes about each person in the Finch family tree. Most hit the mark - I think Barbara and Lewis' were the most affecting to me - I did find Molly's one a little twee for my liking, had a bit of an eye roll with that one.

It's the Forrest Gump of games really, it's about how life and death entwine with one another through all these different time periods and decades. The rooms acting as microcosms of how wildly different peoples lives can be and the consequences one wrong decision can make. There's something inherently beautiful about that but also melancholic and sombre at the same time.

8. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (15/01/2018) - PC - 7/10 - 6.5 Hours

Was really looking forward to this after all the positive buzz but it just left me feeling incredibly underwhelmed. The first two hours are awful, combat arena followed by a simplistic puzzle repeated ad nauseam, almost gave up after that but pushed on through and I managed to enjoy it overall but it still didn't blow my socks off.

The combat was its saving grace, it initially feels a bit simplistic but by the end of the game I loved every second of it, the moments in focus cutting down enemies in a long stream were is exhilarating.

The biggest failure for me though is that I never really cared about the lore, world or Senua herself, it just went all over my head with the talk of gods, Niflheim, hellheim etc. And the stuff with the darkness. At least it's incredibly pretty I guess.

9. Life is Strange: Before the Storm - Episode 3: Hell is Empty (15/01/2018) - PC - 7/10 - 3 Hours

This had lots of promise at the midway point, I was shocked by a certain event occurring but the rest of it just felt like a damp squib really, wasn't at all satisfying and still left me with a lot of questions around Rachel leading into the mainline LiS.

The decision at the end just wasn't that earth shattering and a lot of this episode felt like waiting around, there's one investigation moment in an office which is incredible but that's the only memorable moment.

10. Resident Evil Revelations (20/01/2018) - Switch - 7/10 - 9 Hours

I really enjoyed this. Felt very old-school Resi in lots of places, I thought the ship was superb as well, took on a character all of its own and added claustrophobia and that tight-nit locked doors/puzzle room design that Resi is known for. I also loved how grandiose everything was, there were some dull areas but a lot of the different areas felt distinct and memorable.

It does focus a bit too much on action towards the end and abandons a lot of the spooky corridor ideals of its early hours, but I enjoyed it as a whole and would recommend it.

11. Resident Evil Revelations 2 (24/01/2018) - Switch - 5/10 - 10 Hours

Really didn't have much fun with this at all. I did enjoy it at times, but insta-kill enemies, invisible insta-kill enemies and incredibly dull locale after incredibly dull locale just wore me down by the end. I also spent about an hour on one of the boss fights as no matter what I did he wouldn't expose his weak point in the 3rd phase.

Just couldn't wait for it to end when I was in Episode 3, just such a slog at times, I'm actually surprised I managed to drag myself through the rest of it.

12. The Inpatient (25/01/2018) - PS4 Pro & PSVR - 6/10 - 2 Hours

Quite disappointing this. I love Until Dawn and loved Rush of Blood so had high hopes for this but it just ends up feeling flat.

It's biggest problem is it's just not scary overall. There are 3 or 4 dream sequences which are genuinely a bit scary and feature a few jump scares but apart from this it often just feels like you're walking down dimly lit hallways with a torch, but the game never makes you feel threatened in these moments so instead you're just walking about. Sometimes it'll even stop you so you can talk to someone in a hallway - when you're meant to be escaping - so you can make some dialogue choices, not a great design choice.

The decisions, characters and plot do pull it back slightly, but the butterfly effect and the way things can pan out just isn't as satisfying here as Until Dawn.

I had fun with it, but overall it was short and quite boring.

13. Shadow of the Colossus (10/02/2018) - PS4 Pro - 6/10 - 12 Hours

It's a really odd game, there's nothing quite like it even today, the closest comparison would be Breath of the Wild I'd say and it's clear Nintendo took plenty of inspiration from this for the destroyed/past glories of the world to the shrines and the Divine Beasts.

I did enjoy quite a few of the fights, my favourites were the 5th, 7th, 13th and 14th. But unfortunately my overriding emotion after finishing it is sheer frustration, the 15th and 16th colossi just brought back some of the frustration I had early on and compounded it, I was running around for about 90 minutes on the 15th just trying to jump up ledges and stuff and the 16th - whilst amazing in terms of scale - was so incredibly annoying.

That's the thing for me, when games are as frustrating as this they're just exasperating. All the patience I have in me is sapped away and instead of enjoying the fights I'm just hoping it get it over with so I can get that one step closer to finishing it and never having to go back to it again. The controls are just not up to it and there's sometimes not even subtle signposting about what you need to do, I ended up running around aimlessly until the first tip came up most of the time - and even then that wouldn't always mean I knew what the knack was.

It is kind of satisfying when you figure one of the knack's out and then easily defeat a colossi, sure, but all the enthusiasm was usually drained out of me by that point. The spectacle of some of the fights and how graceful the colossi are is fantastic but yeah with the frustration I just couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

The graphics are also astounding, literally mind-blowingly so but I feel like it's a case of style over substance. I can see why folks would've been blown away by this back in 2005 and if I hadn't of known the story beats I might've thought more of it but as it stands it's a mostly forgettable experience, even the ending just left me nonplussed about the whole thing.

14. Monster Hunter World (14/02/2018) - PS4 Pro - 9/10 - 60 Hours

Really enjoyed it, an absolutely incredible ride from start to finish and so incredibly compelling with friends.

I was a little disappointed by the monster variety as the back half is basically just a shit load of different dragons. I would've liked to have seen some more variety thrown in there.

Another minor complaint was that it's a tad too easy. The health booster item you can equip in particular seems like a bit of a crutch and I never really had any problem with any of the Mons like I did previous games.

It sounds like I'm being negative, but throughout this has really been the MH I dreamed about after getting into 4U years back. Seeing the world in so much detail, in vivid 4K HDR and seeing these humongous intelligent monsters fighting against one another in front of me is a truly remarkable sight.

I really do think this is the RE4 moment for the series, cannot wait to see what Capcom do with the G rank stuff in the future and what new hunts/monster packs are introduced.

15. Bayonetta 2 (17/02/2018) - Switch - 8/10 - 9 Hours

The madness, humour, bombast and the absolutely incredible combat keep it ticking along until the unsurprisingly insane ending though. There's an entire level that takes place in Mechs and another that has you piloting a fighter jet, just to give folks an idea of the insanity involved.

It's very clever what Platinum has done with the story as well, with it weaving in and out of the first games' plot and reacquainting you with some familiar locales. It very much feels like the first game was the yin and this is it's yang, more colourful locales, fighting a lot of demons and a trip to hell instead of heaven alone, the juxtaposed hair styles of Jeanne and Bayonetta too seem to tie into this.

If you've got a Switch and haven't played it, it's an easy recommendation for me.

16. God of War III Remastered (21/02/2018) - PS4 Pro - 7/10 - 9 Hours

Overall I enjoyed it, but didn't love it really. Kratos is such an unlikeable cunt that I just find it hard to care about him 1 iota, it feels throughout that you're actually the antagonist and all the Gods are the usual video game protagonists, it's cool in a way like that but having Kratos with 1 emotion - anger - and his voice acting is just fucking hilariously bad, angry man is angry all the damn time, no nuance at all.

The combat, fixed camera angles and some of the puzzling was the high point. When you have the full arsenal of weapons towards the end and can switch between them all at will it feels so damn great, the electric claws are definitely my favourite though, endlessly keeping folks up in the air with it never got old at all.

The opening and the Chronos fight were really cool but it gets bogged down towards the end with just too much puzzle sections one after another and then seems to end really abruptly, with Zeus you fighting Zeus a second after getting back up to the surface of Olympus. The graphics still mostly look fantastic today, some of the lighting, the enemies and the way everything still has that sheen on it I really didn't expect on an 8 year old last-gen port.

I'm pleased I played it though, it just feels like games like this aren't really made any more, especially the fixed camera angles and so much puzzling going on, it's a nice refresher. Ultimately rather forgettable though, but I'm pleased I went through it.

17. Metal Gear Survive (05/03/2018) - PS4 Pro - 9/10 - 35 Hours

Ended up really enjoying this, even more than MGSV in fact.

It just had something about it. I think the survival mechanics and fog really made it for me, particularly in the early parts of the game. It was just so incredibly tense every time you stepped outside Base Camp and it made for some extremely tense moments when you're running out of Oxygen or just finished a mission and get lost in the fog.

The Online Co-op is cool too, but more ordinary I suppose, still quite a bit of fun though, but I wish new maps would've opened up earlier on as it got repetitive playing the same one or two for hours on end.

18. Rime (09/03/2018) - PC - 8/10 - 5 Hours

Really enjoyed it overall, specifically the first 1-2 hours where you're still getting your bearings and seeing how the island fits together.

The middle part where you're solving a lot of puzzles one after another did drag a bit but that was remedied by the fantastic end segments.

The sound track was absolutely phenomenal and moving throughout, even the opening scenes when the theme swells up I felt tears in my eyes. The soundtrack really manages to punctuate more of the emotional and impactful moments throughout and make them feel even more memorable.

The puzzle design - often one of my bug bears - was perfect for my limited puzzling abilities. I never once had to look up a solution to a puzzle, with time and patience I managed to solve every one I came across - only two stumped me which was the ship shadow puzzle and the other one was the huge energy ball puzzle towards the end of the game. But yeah, I solved every one eventually and felt satisfied that I managed it on my own without feeling annoyed or frustrated, just the right side of challenging for me.

It's just such a beautiful, poignant, moving little game and I highly recommend it.

19. Night in the Woods (13/03/2018) - PC - 6/10 - 8.5 hours

Not really sure what to make of it really. The first Act I was really sold on it, that scene where Mae first looks in the mirror and you see all the thoughts going through her head was incredible as that's something that lack of self confidence is something that has affected me personally for years.

But once it gets into Act 2 some of it's charm and quirkiness wore off. Mae as a character is still really cool and parts of the dialogue are still really cool, charming and witty but there's just something boring about it. I did this 'side quest' earlier to help a guy gather some antiques at the river and I just wanted it to end, it was just so incredibly dull.

It just feels like it needs more to it. I get that it's a very light platformer - nigh on visual novel - but there's just something missing there that makes me want to go back to it the next day or play it for hours on end. With the way the days work it ends up feeling very repetitive too, you'll get up out of bed and speak to your friends on the laptop, then go about walking over to them, chatting with them all - doing some side quests along the way - then someone will hatch some idea of an activity you can do and there'll be this segment that follows where you go the Mall or the Library or something, then you'll do much the same the next day.

The mini-games like the Rogue-like dungeon crawler you can play or the Guitar hero-esque rhythm game help to break up the monotony and tedium somewhat, but they're so simplistic that I couldn't gain much excitement or enthusiasm from them much, they're just a nice distraction.

It kind of reminds me of a cross between Kentucky Route Zero, South Park: The Stick of Truth and Persona in lots of ways. But without any of the charm or joie de vivre of those titles.

It's just boring is what I'm saying really and I couldn't wait to stop playing it if I'm completely honest. I do think it's got a lot of heart though and I'm glad I played through it, I just wish I wasn't so numbed with tedium by the time I reached the finish line.

20. A Way Out (03/04/2018) - PS4 Pro - 7/10 - 7 Hours

Overall I enjoyed it but I did didn't really find it as memorable as Brothers really. The Prison sections were excellent but I felt it loses something after that, the twist is somewhat predictable if you've played Brothers as well, albeit still very effective.

The whole last section I won't spoil but it is incredibly cool, puts a whole ton of pressure on and there's huge stakes whichever way things turn out

Definitely worth a play but I can't say I'll remember it anywhere near as much as Brothers in the years to come.

21. Sea of Thieves (05/04/2018) - PC - 9/10 - 120 Hours

So after 120 hours I decided to put this game on hiatus.

I got to Level 32-32-30 in the three factions after that amount of time, I was just playing the game to enjoy it rather than rank up necessarily, even so that is an obscene amount of time to be relatively far off Pirate Legend status so I've kind of lost motivation.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game though, it has provided me with some of my favourite moments I've ever had in games, when this game is good it is damn good. But likewise, when something awful happens you just want to be done with it and never switch it on again.

22. League of Legends (07/04/2018) - PC - 10/10 - 100 Hours

Got into this in late February and played most late evenings slowly but surely getting up to Level 30 to play Ranked matches, learning the ropes and all the intricacies and it was an absolute blast.

Learning a whole new game type in MOBAs that I'd not even touched before was exhilarating. Just playing for fun, learning the different mechanics and strategies involved and feeling the thrill of getting a hard earned win and a devasting loss, such a fantastic game.

23. Ni No Kuni II Revenant Kingdom (13/04/2018) - PS4 Pro - 6/10 - 33 Hours

Exploring the towns was great and they all felt incredibly unique. Going back to DDD after the first game was exhilarating, Goldpaw, Broadleaf and Hydropolis all felt very different than one another. There was a disconnect without the voices though, you're robbed of the general hum and hubbub of a JRPG city and it ends up not quite feeling as lived in and alive as it should do. There wasn't enough of them either, once you've seen those cities you're at the end of the game (apart from side users of course).

The music was another high point for me, although some of the tracks I felt felt too austere after you liberate them - so to speak - Broadleaf in particular feels in need of a pick me up track as when you arrive it feels very oppressive and still feels so even after all the events there which is weird. The other cities have the same issue but it doesn't affect them as much.

Overall, I really couldn't wait to finish it by the end. I would love to know the story of its development as it feels like a shadow of the first game in every way. Next to none of the charm, none of the personality or inter-party relationships, cities with less character and vibrancy. The only thing that it improved on from the original is the combat and the addition of kingdom building, everything else feels like a misstep.

24. Far Cry 5 (28/04/2018) - PC - 7/10 - 20 Hours

My only real disappointment compared to 3 would be that there isn't any real incentive to hunt animals in this. Since you don't make pouches out of animal skins anymore - you just sell them for cash - I mostly didn't bother hunting them at all unless they attacked me or if they were literally running in front of me on my way to an objective.

The ending almost put it up 1 point for me as well. I was not expecting it to be so batshit insane as it was, no spoilers but yeah I was like whoa.

I put a little bit of time into Far Cry Arcade and I was incredibly impressed with it. It really is fantastic that you can jump in and play all these user created courses, I played 3 or 4 solo ones which were incredibly cool and worthwhile and then stumbled across the MP which was surprisingly a fully featured TDM mode made with user generated maps. Very impressive.

So yeah. I think you know what to expect at this point. The Far Cry series is a safe pair of hands really, it takes the formula set in 3 - expanded upon in 3 and Primal - and injects it with some really cool antagonists and a unique setting. Worth a go, especially if on sale.

May

25. South Park: The Fractured But Whole (02/05/2018) - PC - 7/10 - 22 Hours

Overall I enjoyed myself but I can't say I liked it as much as the first game. There were just not as many memorable moments as the first game. There were lots of cool scenes and the Police Station section was probably my highlight, I did laugh an awful lot, maybe even more than the first game but I just found myself a little bored after awhile and that there wasn't enough new or exciting to differentiate it from the first game in any fantastic way aside from the combat.

It has none of the Canadian bit from Stick of Truth or anything, so it just drags a bit after awhile. There's nothing to break it up and take you to some strange different locales, it is all in the town this time around.

The combat is definitely the star, I grew tired of it in Stick of Truth, but here it never really got boring, you always felt like you had to be on your toes and it was a deep tactical system where placement and forethought were key. Unfortunately there's a few cheap bosses that'll one shot you near the end that ended up affecting my enjoyment of it, but all the fair fights were great every time, just the cheap ones that were rather frustrating.

But yeah. I'd probably recommend it, I definitely think it has got more depth to it in a lot of ways than Stick of Truth without having as many memorable or special moments. I recommend it overall, I had fun.

26. God of War (04/05/2018) - PS4 Pro - 9/10 - 43 Hours

I don't really know what to say about this spoiler free. I'll just say that it made me cry 3 fucking times 3 TIMES in a GoW game - I can't believe it either.

I have a few issues with the game and up until the last hour or so I probably would've given it a 7/8 out of 10 but the finale was just so amazing and so perfect that I bumped it up to a 9.

Masterpiece is a bit of a stretch - although I do see why some folks feel that way. But yeah, it's an excellent game with phenomenal visuals, voice acting, dialogue and level design. The story is quite slow at times and should be admired for how small and grounded it is in the overall scheme of things, it doesn't go anywhere for quite some time throughout the game but when it does go places BOY does it go places.

Never cared for Kratos at all in the previous games. He was just a one dimensional angry dude who was angry at everything - an allegory for the angsty teenager if you will - but in this they actually made him a real character with real emotions, feelings and sensibilities and that is a hell of an achievement.

27. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freese (18/05/2018) - Switch - 9/10 - 10 Hours

I finished it just now, the final boss was a bit annoying but after an hour or so perseverance I managed to batter him, if it wasn't for the platforming lifting lava move he does I wouldn't done it much easier one shot kills are not fun at all but yeah no worries now, all is finished.

Overall I probably didn't enjoy it quite as much as DKCR3D, I think in a post-Cuphead world I found it a bit easy at times to be honest whereas I struggled a lot with DKCR3D and therefore it was more satisfying when I beat a particularly hard level on that than it was on this.

Still a fantastic platformer though, definitely one of the best in recent years and lives up to the hype and reputation.

28. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (20/05/2018) - PS4 Pro - 8/10 - 39 Hours

As a long-time Yakuza fan I was always going to like this. The new Dragon Engine really shines in Kiryu's most personal story yet. Has a lovely cast of characters that you care for an awful lot and doesn't really put a foot wrong from start to finish.

June

29. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (04/06/2018) - Switch - 9/10 - 15 Hours

As my first Musou game I was unsure how I was going to find this but I ended up really enjoying it. I actually think this probably had a better story overall than BotW which I really wasn't expecting and the Zelda-ness of it really kept me invested throughout. As a Musou beginner the constant action and satisfying-but-simple combat made the entire 15 hours entertaining.

30. Illusion: A tale of the Mind (11/06/2018) - PS4 Pro - 6/10 - 4 Hours

An incredibly niche Indie game set in the mind of a young girls father and the mystery surrounding what happened to her and him in the process. Nothing special at all unfortunately.

31. Fire Emblem Warriors (27/06/2018) - Switch - 7/10 - 10 Hours

I got this purely down to my love of Hyrule Warriors. Unfortunately as I have no resonance with Fire Emblem whatsoever it didn't leave as much of an impression on me and I just wanted to see the end of it towards the end of my time with the game unfortunately. Still enjoyable nonetheless.

32. The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit (30/06/2018) - PC - 9/10 - 3 Hours

A fantastic heart-breaking prologue to Life is Strange 2. Never outstays its welcome and showcases Dontnod's fantastic story-telling expertise. Whetting the appetite for LiS 2.

July

33. Ys VIII: The Lacrimosa of Dana (24/07/2018) - Switch - 9/10 - 58 Hours

All the characters are cool, the island is a character in itself - so mysterious with lots of different locales to keep things interesting and engaging the whole way 58 hours through - picking up all the treasure chests and collectibles was incredibly compelling the whole way through (I ended up getting 99.84% completion) and even the side quests whilst maintaining a similar kind of pattern managed to stay fresh and interesting right up to the end, something which games very rarely achieve these days.

August

34. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege (20/08/2018) - PC - 45 Hours

Got into this from launch and have picked it up and then shelved in for long periods of time. This recent dive back into it was the first time I'd dived back in since mid-2017 and I absolutely loved it.

Still one of the very best Multiplayer shooters of all time in my opinion, not much comes close. It was definitely a huge learning curve learning all the new maps and getting used to the different strategies and stuff but once I was back in I was hooked on it once again.

Currently Playing:

Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4)

Next up:

Shenmue I & II (PS4)
Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4)
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (PS4)
Taiko no Tatsujin (Switch)
Pokemon Let's Go! Pikachu (Switch)

Only managed to beat 38 games last year

Got my 1st 100% (no plat)

1. Uncanny Valley = got this from ps+, only took like 2-3 hours to complete, no idea about the story because i use walkthrough to complete it faster

2. Chronicles of teddy, bought it cheap on sales like 6 months ago. Not expecting it to be so long, the puzzles are hard but the gameplay/battle quite good. Took me like 20 hours completed it 100% there is sooo much collectibles

3. Lost blade 2. Got this one from ps+ very easy to 100%

4. Megaman 9. This game is hard, but not as memorable as the classics

Final List

1: LA Noire - 26 hours
gZnoPEF.png

LA Noire feels decidedly last-gen in a lot of ways, movement, controls, rigidity of the interrogation/missions, etc. The facial scan tech is still incredible though, so while the resolution of the faces (and everything else) looked fairly old, the detail in the faces still feels like it's ahead of current-gen efforts. My biggest problem with the game is that the interrogation sections too often feel like trial and error. I was watching the character's faces closely, looking for tells, and still constantly guessing the wrong option. Often, the option that I did pick ended up with wildly different dialogue than I expected too. Since interrogations are the core focus on the game, this dragged the game down a lot. I played the Switch port, and I'll also add that playing a game as big as this on a plane without feeling like I was losing anything in the experience was pretty magical.

2: 999 – 19 hours
UkyuiRP.png

This game is rife with anime clichés, from the character personalities to the awkwardly sexualized designs for all of the female characters. For me this was very off-putting. Some of the ending(s) redeem the character tropes a little bit, but not enough to warrant sitting through a dozen+ hours of reading or listening to the main character and his anemic love interest interact. Finished all endings.

3: Assassin's Creed: Origins – 28 hours
vE2yds5.png

This would have ranked pretty high on my 2017 GOTY list if I finished it in time. As someone who had grown to dislike the AC series after AC2, with each new version rehashing the game gameplay and adding more filler content, AC:O was a breath of fresh air. The setting is awesome, the combat is much more skill-based and exciting, and the game looks absolutely gorgeous on a 4K TV with HDR. Side quest content is of higher quality overall, but is also located organically, so I never felt overwhelmed despite the massive amount of content in the game. I'm very excited to see where the AC series is going from here, which is not something I could imagine saying after being disappointed and bored with the last several years of AC releases. On the negative side, the modern-day storyline is still terrible and doesn't feel like it's going anywhere, but it isn't a big emphasis on the game and it wasn't enough to drag down what I think is the best AC game so far

4: Steamworld Dig 2 – 8.5 hours
GFhfzOA.png

I finished Steamworld Dig 1 last year and though it was pretty mediocre. The hand-crafted levels in the sequel put this leagues ahead of the original though. I never felt like I was just absent-mindedly digging through dozens of rocks, as there was always a lot of stuff to interact with on my way down (enemies, treasure, environmental hazards, etc.). What really surprised me was how much the game embraces mobility compared to the original. It's doesn't take long to unlock room-wide grappling hooks, jetpacks, and other items that all make the game play much more fluidly than I ever would have expected from a sequel to Dig 1.

5: Prey - 27 hours
A7XsV8B.png

I like that games like Prey are still being made. The player freedom in the game is impressive and Talos 1 is a really cool environment, convincing as a massive ship that you see only some parts of. Where Prey falls short for me is the story and setting. I never thought the alien species in the game was interesting or fun to fight against, and we've seen the "deserted space station where something has gone terribly wrong" set up dozens of times, usually with a more interesting pay off than what Prey accomplishes. Immersive sims feel like a genre where the level of freedom given to the player allows them to learn something about themselves based on how they respond to situations and play the game but Prey doesn't feel like it succeeds at this.

6: TACOMA - 3.5 hours
Cwdw8Zl.png

As a follow-up to Gone Home this was a little disappointing. The space station didn't have as much character and wasn't as interesting to explore as the Home, and the narrative wasn't as personal. The "found" narrative pieces didn't make my mind race in quite the same way as Gone Home did. I never felt myself fearing extreme outcomes based on the small window into the story that I found, which was the coolest part of Gone Home. I applaud them for trying something new though, and they do manage to make you care about some of the characters over a relatively short playtime. I certainly appreciated the LGBT representation in the game and how normal it felt.
7/10

7: Yakuza Kiwami - 9.5 hours
hso2Atm.png

Kiwami is really impressive as a remake. The combat was brought up to modern Yakuza standards, the environments and character models all look great, and the new story additional are the highlight of the game rather than something that tarnishes the original game's legacy. However the additions don't quite do enough to hide the core of the game's age completely. It still feels a bit too simple, a bit too short, and the story isn't as strong as Yakuza 0. I'm looking forward to playing 6 this year and I think playing Kiwami is going to add a lot to that experience in the same way that playing 0 added a ton to Kiwami, but on its own Kiwami is just okay.
7/10

8: Little Nightmares - 5 hours
TdAfCPY.png

I wasn't sure what to expect of this going in, but it's an INSIDE or LIMBO-style game with higher production values. It doesn't quite reach the heights of those games. What story there is was disappointingly shallow, and there are a couple pretty annoying chase and stealth sequences. On the plus side, the art direction in the game is fantastic. Characters look creepy and surreal without relying on gore and the game plays around with proportion and perspective in some really unsettling ways.
6/10

9: Monster Hunter World - 106 hours
jGAx2xR.png

I've been playing Monster Hunter since the PSP days, but I liked the series despite all of its idiosyncrasies – the terrible camera, tedious crafting, and bizarrely structured online options - not because of them. I was excited for MH Tri on Wii because we were finally getting a Monster Hunter game on a modern console instead of a handheld. Tri was great, but it still had a bad N64 C-stick-esque camera, blurry Wii visuals, and a weird online system. MHW is everything I ever hoped for from the series. It finally plays like something modern with the excellent combat not being marred by bad camera controls. The game looks absolutely stunning and all of the huge monsters look even more intimidating in HD and on a big screen. It actually exceeded my hopes for a modern console MH in that it also stripped out a lot of the stuff I found tedious about the series, like breakable harvesting tools, frequent load screens, and a constant need to manually craft every item. I'm so glad that other people are finally able to see what makes this series so great, and I'm excited about what the future of the series looks like.

10: Darkest Dungeon - 40 hours
OO88VPh.png

This game was such a mixed bag. I loved the presentation of it, the idea of having physical and mental damage for characters, the crazy variety of classes, skills, items, quirks, and on and on. Despite being a slow paced game it's very stressful to play, it only takes a little bad luck from a crit or two or some status effects to turn a quest that is going well into a disaster where you're going to lose one or more characters. The RNG leads to some pretty obnoxious deaths, and the time/grinding cost when you lose characters caused me to put the game down when it originally launched. The new-ish Radiant difficulty feels like a really smart response to this: the challenge of the game is mostly maintained, but it's faster to recover from losses and you get through the whole game in less time. Ultimately, the game still does feel pretty grindy. You need to put a lot of work into characters before they are ready for the end-game, and the game encourages you to do that in the safest ways possible. This means the entire max-rank of dungeon difficulties is a waste: you're just risking your characters if you go there, and the payoff of more resources vs bringing your characters to a mid-range dungeon is almost never worth it. It's a smartly made game but not without flaws. I liked it enough that I'm looking forward to picking up the DLC some day and doing another playthrough, but I hope if they make a sequel some day it's a bit better balanced and less randomized. Also, this review applies to the PC version: I found the ports on iOS and handheld devices to be totally unplayable, and it seemed like they made almost no effort to adapt the UI of the game to the smaller screens.
8/10

11: Night in the Woods - 10 hours
UrZaVpp.png

What impressed me most about Night in the Woods is how authentic the characters and the town feel. Here is a game about a small town that has already seen its best days. Given the way job opportunities and populations have trended more and more towards urban hubs over the last two decades in the US, small towns in decline like the fictional one depicted in the game are all over the place. The game reminded me of my home town and how I feel everytime I go back. Exploring the stories of the characters who were stuck there and felt trapped by lack of opportunity reminded me of the real friends I had that never moved and have really struggled. I didn't like the more fantastical parts of the game, including the ending, as the game was strongest when it felt grounded.
7/10

12: Into the Breach - 10 hours
I6vjy1K.png

Into the Breach is a strategy game halfway between X-Com and Advanced Wars, though I struggled with how to describe it when writing this and it really is its own unique thing. I love how every turn of every battle in feels like a puzzle to solve and how well the game translates what is going to happen in a turn so you can plan based on what you see in front of you. It scratches somewhat of the same itch as Advanced Wars, but the stakes always feel much higher and the game has much more emphasis on tactics. The variety in mechs and how much 1-2 ability changes per chassis can change your entire strategy really speaks to how much depth there is. If I had one change to request, it would have been for a more traditional campaign in addition to the short repeatable rogue-like game mode. That said, the price is more than fair for what you get.
9/10

13: We Were Here - 1 hour
f7edLcx.png

This is a short free "pilot" episode of a would-be series of games on Steam. It's played entirely in co-op, and the goal is to communicate with your partner over voice chat about what you're each seeing in different rooms in order to understand and solve puzzles to escape a dungeon. Basically, like one of those "Escape" group activities that people do in real life, but with neither of you ever being in the same room in-game. It's a cool idea and it's generous as a free no-strings-attached game, but it had a lot of technical issues and bugs that led to some frustrating moments. Still, if you like co-op games and have a friend to play this with, it's a cool experience.
6/10

14: What Remains of Edith Finch - 3.5 hours
dKjyIX7.png

I was prepared to hate this after the first 15 minutes where the premise is revealed: explore the stories of a bunch of unrelatable rich eccentric white people, but this blew me away. So often "walking sims" feel like they have chosen that genre with budget constraints in mind, or because it was the simplest vehicle to tell their story, but What Remains quickly shows that there is nothing simple or low-budget about it. The stories of the family members you explore go some wild places and I loved the gameplay and visual variety in each. Moreover, I loved how creative the whole thing felt. This is definitely one of my favorite games I have played in the last year.
9/10

15: Nioh - 40 hours
Py5Zg7q.png

This is a replay since I finished it last year as well. I picked up the season pass recently and then realized that the save that was left on the PS+ cloud after my PS4 Pro died was not post-game. Instead, it was at the last regular game mission: a long and tough boss gauntlet. I relearned the controls in an early mission and then gave the last mission a shot. It was a disaster of course, I was definitely not good enough at Nioh to finish the final level again after a ~1 year break from playing.

So, I restarted from the beginning and decided to mix up my build and try a DLC weapon (Tonfa). I was surprised that it still felt really really hard. I thought my knowledge of boss patterns, enemy spawn points, and how the game stats worked would make the game a cakewalk but Nioh is never a cakewalk. Whereas Soulsborne games are largely about succeeding through 80% knowledge (where enemies are, how they attack, etc.) and 20% execution, the execution requirement for Nioh is much higher. It's not uncommon to get 1 or 2-shot by an enemy you have been fighting for dozens of missions if you make a small error in gameplay. Some of the bosses actually seemed harder than I remembered in the first half of the game, somehow. My character build was much better this time around though, with light-armor and high damage, so by the second half of the game I did find that I was able to murder bosses that had given me a really hard time the first time I played.

I was also surprised that my original criticisms of the game from last year: too long, too repetitive, not enough enemy variety, didn't seem to bother me in my replay. I think when I no longer had any expectation that the game was going to show me new things, since it was just a replay, I ceased to be disappointed by seeing the same things. The game became less about overcoming new obstacles, and instead was about perfecting my gameplay and getting through enemies and levels efficiently. The game took ~20 hours less for me to finish this time (despite doing more of the side content) and I enjoyed my second playthrough more than my first.

I'll give this a shot, no idea how many games I actually finish in a year.

So far I'm playing:

What Remains of Edith Finch (one trophy left)
Kingdom Hearts (ready to tackle the final boss)
Yakuza Kiwami 2 (halfway through, aiming for 100% completion)
Sweet Home (halfway? through)
Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero (working on the Pirate Queen DLC)

On my list to play:
Horizon Zero Dawn
Skyrim
Superhot
Valkyria Chronicles
Duck Tales (Gameboy and Famicom)
Final Fight (various platforms)

I'll add to the list as I work out what else I work out what other games I'll tackle this year. Probably will be a mix of retro Capcom titles, indies and whatever takes my fancy on PS4/Switch this year.
