I'm in again.

Game 1: Killing Floor: Incursion - 5 hours 1/1/18
Fun but nothing special. Really enjoyed using the pump action shotgun against a horde of zombies but it gets a little repetitive even though the game is so short. The boss fights were underwhelming and mostly just an annoyance.

Game 2: Hidden My Game By Mom 1/2 - 1 hours 1/3/18
Loved these games. So silly and fun. Some really great solutions for some of the puzzles. They're so short I'm counting them as one game.

Game 3: Brother Stole My Pudding - 30 minutes 1/4/18
I guess this is a spiritual sequel to Hidden My Game By Mom 1 & 2. Great just like those two. Short but super fun. I played it on it's own so I'm not lumping it in with the other two which I played back to back in one sitting.

Game 4: Arizona Sunshine - 5 hours 1/9/18
This was fun. The comic voice over isn't my cup of tea but it wasn't bad. Compared to killing floor I liked this better.

Game 5: Chronos - 7 hours 1/16/18
I liked this but it was kind of mediocre. Even in normal games I don't think the ICO style cinematic camera has ever worked perfectly but in VR especially it just doesn't make sense. It had clunky enough controls as is and the switching camera angles didn't help.

Game 6: Celeste - 8 hours 1/29/18
Loved this. Really fun gameplay with tons of variety. Reasonably difficult. Just great all around.

Game 7: The Lost Bear - 1 hour 1/30/18
This is short but really good. The way the 3D and 2D environments come together is really neat. I'd love to see the idea expanded upon.

Game 8: Eagle Flight - 3 hours 30 minutes 2/6/18
This is neat. Gameplay is pretty simple but it's still a lot of fun. Especially the fast paced tunnel races.

Game 9: Slain: Back From Hell - 10 hours 2/6/18
Ok. Once you figure out the best technique for each enemy type it gets pretty representative. Bosses especially are kind of just busy work.

Game 10: Koi DX - 2 hours 2/11/18
Short but enjoyable. Not a ton to do.

Game 11: Xeodrifter - 4 hours 2/24/18
Fun little game. It was neat to see some of Mutant Mudd's mechanics used.

Game 12: Typoman - 3 hours 2/26/18
Kind of neat. Wish there was more variety in gameplay and that it was a little longer.

This is my 4th time finishing this game it's just as good as the other 3 times

Wanted to get a short one in to pad the numbers, I loved the story in this game and I think the world is awesome, Boss fights are dull, I will be pumped when the order 1887 comes out and goes down to 30$ in a year.

18: Dead Rising (360) Play Time 13h~ (July/26) 8/10

19: Dead Rising 2 Case Zero (360) Play Time 6h~ (July/29) 6.5/10
Was a nice short game not much to do and game play was slow and chugged for me.

20: Dead Rising 2 (360) Play Time 20h~ (July/29) 5/10
Did not enjoy this game as much as the first one It was too long and the worst final 2 bosses I ever fought in video games.

21: Spider-Man (PS4) Play Time 22H27m (Sept/13) 9/10
This game was fun. I liked how short it was kinda refressing I pretty much 100% in 22 hours

22:Red Dead Redemption (360) Play Tim: 22h44m (Sept,19) 8/10
Wanted to play this before RDR 2 came out shows its age but still a great game

23: Assassin's Creed Odyssey (XB1) Play Time: 60H (Oct,21) 7/10
The AC games are some of my favorite games of all time but I have been very disappointed the new ones they just dumped it down to LOOK AT MY NUMBERS THEY ARE BIGGER. and man what a lame story

24:Red Dead Redemption 2 (XB1) Play Time:74h43m (Nov,14) 7/10
Another game I was disappointed in for most of the same reasons as AC I just fell story wise games are on a huge down fall besides a select few. They use cheep tactics to make us feel for the characters.

25: EA Sports UFC 3 (XB1) Play Time 4H (Nov,14) 6/10
Needed to knock fools out after the deep dive I took into RDR 2

26:Dead Space (360) Play Time 6h36m (Nov.28) 9/10
One of my favorite Horror games of all time still great

27: Dead Space 2 (360) Play Time 8h (Dec,3) 7/10
Meh

28: Emily was Away too (PC) Play Time 2h (Dec,27) 9/10
This is how you make me care about characters I felt more emotion in this 2 hour game than I did in my 70+ hours of RDR 2, I wanted Emily to love me I felt such a strong attraction to her it felt so real. Side note I had the day off it was 12:30am and I was high as fuck so that definitely had an impact on my thoughts of this game (I am in Canada it's fine)

2017 - 84 games

January
ed9j5bC.png

#1 Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy + - 8
3DS - Jan 5th - 16 hours
I was really impressed with this game, it looks and plays great, the 3D effect is one of the best. I like Ace Combat games but I'm not very good at them but this one has manoeuvres which makes it a lot easier. The game only lasts like 3-4 hours but there are 4 difficulties and extra/survival missions which I did all of.

#2 Super Mario Odyssey - 10 Switch - Jan 7th - 42 hours
First 3D Mario I've 100%ed. This game oozes creativity, the controls are perfect, there's surprises round every corner and it has a boat load of content. Only negatives were it was pretty easy other than a few post game challenges and the coin grind at the very end was a bit of a pain but that's only for completionists.

#3 Mafia - 7 PC - Jan 9th - 10 hours
Mafia is a difficult game to rate, it does a lot of things well, especially for the time. The attention to detail is great, it goes for realism/immersion over GTA-style craziness, the story is genuinely good and the best part of the game and the voice acting is solid (at least across the main cast) The gameplay however doesn't hold up as well. The cars are (rightfully so for the time) slow and painful to drive, and there is a hell of a lot of driving back and forth. The shooting is a little better, but the AI is stupid and most gun fights play out the same.

#4 Killzone - 6 PS2 - Jan 20th - 8.30 hours
This game is not as bad as I thought it might be, which I know isn't a great compliment but I had fun with it. The first impressions are poor but it gets better as it goes on. The story and characters I actually liked, the four characters you can choose each have differences which make the levels play out slightly different depending on who you choose, the graphics and sound are good, and once you realise to adopt a slower pace, the gameplay isn't too bad at all. The frustrations come from the awful frame rate, the PS2 just can't handle this game, and the later levels which end up just throwing wave after wave of bullet sponge enemies with few health packs in sight. I wish I had played the PS3 version as that has a much better frame rate.

#5 Halo 5 Guardians - 7
Xbox One - Feb 9th - 5 hours
Pretty standard stuff, shooting things is fun and the levels give you some options in how to tackle the encounters. Game is pretty drab in the first half but some nice locations in the 2nd and it feels really good at 60fps

#6 Rime - 6 PS4 - Feb 12th - 4 hours
Okay little game with beautiful graphics and soundtrack, it's a little slow and one of the chapters stood out as not as good as the rest. The frame rate is not very good which is a shame because it really takes you out of the environments when all you can pay attention to is the fluctuating fps. Most of the puzzles were fun to solve though easy and the story is pretty good.

#7 Gears of War 4 - 8 Xbox One- Feb 14th - 7 hours
Played this one co-op and enjoyed it a lot. It had a fair amount of variety (for a shooter) and the new weapons are fun. It keeps it simple but effective. Played a bit of multiplayer which seems kinda dead but was good stuff once we got in a game. Gears 4 is just an overall great package of a game.

#8 CoD Black Ops III - 4 Xbox One - Feb 20th - 7 hours
(Talking about campaign only)
whatthehellwasthat.jpg. Another we played co op and without a doubt the worst mainline cod campaign. The story is bananas which I wouldn't mind if it didn't keep hassling control away from the player for it's nonsensical bullshit. The level design is some of the worst in a fps I've played, they just throw you straight in, nearly every level is just a huge area filled with enemies, no pacing at all. The same old cod gameplay is there with some new abilities which are whatevs, so it's almost half decent but the level design sinks it.

#9 Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons - 6 Xbox One - Feb 23rd - 3 hours
The unique controls were interesting although I was still fighting them by the end of the game, and the story tries to pack a punch but its a little heavy handed and the puzzles were too easy so I was leaning towards being bored rather than engrossed.

March

#10 Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle - 8.5 Switch - March 1st - 27 hours
Actually completed this a few weeks ago but meant to come back and do the ultimate challenges, but after getting stuck on the 2nd one I'll call it a day. I was a fan of this game from the start of the rumours, I like turned based strategy games and from playing ghost recon on 3ds I knew Ubisoft had it in them and they proved me right. Super fun, challenging, funny, polished and a great soundtrack. Bring on a sequel.

#11 Picross DS - 9.5 DS - March 5th - 74.30 hours
Well like 7 months later I finally finished every puzzle in Picross DS. This was my first time playing Picross and I totally loved it, the way you self teach yourself new techniques as you get better is rewarding, at first you think how can I not take a few guesses here and there but there is always a way. One of the best value for money games I've ever bought, paid just £3. I've ordered Picross 3D but I should probably take a little break before diving in..

#12 Bayonetta 2 - 9 Wii U - March 10th - 28 hours
Replay: Incredible game that solves some of the bigger problems with the first, however I feel like some changes to the combat and the easy difficulty make me prefer Bayonetta 1 ever so slightly. I was never able to do infinite climax on B1 but here I did with pure platinum. Still, when that's the only complaint I can come up with, you know the rest of it is pretty damn good.

#13 The Beatles: Rock Band - 8 PS3 - March 13th - 5 hours
It's sort of a miracle this game even exists but I'm glad it does and they really did do a good job chronicling the Beatles. The intro and presentation as a whole are fantastic.

#14 Chrono Trigger - 9 DS - March 20th - 20 hours
Chrono Trigger pretty much does everything very well. The sprites and animation are great, the soundtrack has some great tracks like Frog's Theme, the techs keep the battle system interesting throughout the game, I like how each character has moves that can interact with every other character. I also like how the NPC dialogue changes based on your time travelling antics, especially in the side quests which were probably my favourite part.

#15 A Way Out - 8 PS4 - March 26th - 6 hours
Honestly I wasn't expecting that much from this game but it surprised me a bit. It's a little janky, the writing is kinda bad at points, the voice acting is all over the place, BUT, it's co-op integration is creative, the mini games are fun, its (unintentionally) absolutely hilarious, the second half of the game goes off the rails in a good way, and the end segment was pretty incredible. Me and my friend were laughing the whole way through and we had a great time.

#16 Call of Duty - 7 PC - March 28th - 5 hours
Not much to be said about this one, impressive and innovative for the time, been there done that nowadays, which isn't really the games fault. There were some standout levels and you feel more vulnerable than the later games but the enemy placements were quite predictable and I felt the pacing could have been improved if it jumped around the 3 campaigns rather than having you play them in order one at a time.

#17 Steamworld Dig - 8 PS4 - March 31st - 6 hours
Good stuff. Addictive and somewhat relaxing digging (until you get squashed by a rock), a cool style, and secrets worth exploring for. There's no fluff here and the sequel will definitely go on my wish list.

April
WCbJif9.png

#18 My Nintendo Picross: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 7
DS - April 4th - 13 hours
Pretty standard Picross game, though for some reason they messed up the stylus controls from the other games which I could not get used to so I had to use buttons. Other than that its fine.

#19 Dishonored - 8 - PS3 - April 4th - 11 hours
I was surprised at how much I liked this game, it has some great level design, fun tools to use (even though using them puts you on track for the bad ending..) and an interesting world. The later levels aren't as good but overall a great game.

#20 Lords of the Fallen - 5 - PS4 - April 8th - 12 hours
This game starts out fairly promising as just a Dark Souls clone but goes to shit fairly quickly. The combat is really slow and clunky, the enemies are designed to be a pain in the arse to fight, major tracking and huge shields in tight corridors is not fun. The level design later on is a mess and thanks to audio glitches I played half the game with no music or dialogue. The game was easy but tedious as the predictable bosses have an enormous amount of health.

#21 Transformers Devastation - 9 - PS4 - April 14th - 25 hours
I sort of low key love this game. I know nothing about transformers but I had a blast playing this, it's not as deep or intense as Bayonetta but its similar and incredibly fun to play. The combat feels great and you move around the battles really fast with a mix of melee weapons, guns and of course your transform. The campaign is very short so you're encouraged to go through with all the characters, which I did..In fact I got the platinum trophy which was a pain in the arse and I don't recommend it. One thing I don't like is the scoring system which is more point based than anything so going for the top rank means just extending the battles as long as possible rather than not getting hit. The loot system is pretty cool too and it feels great when you get a sick weapon but later on they become very rare.

#22 Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions - 6 - PS3 - April 19th - 6.30 hours
A quite flawed game, the story never lives up to its potential and although they give you 4 different Spideys to play with, it all ends up being very repetitive. The Noir levels stand out visually but feel like a bootleg Arkham game and the other 3 are all pretty similar. It's also quite buggy and I had to restart a lot of checkpoints due to progression glitches. The second half of the game felt like they ran out of ideas and the levels got padded and tiresome. However the game looks nice and the combat can be fun in small doses.

#23 Life Is Strange - 7 PS4 - April 23rd - 12 hours
I liked this game overall but.. the game hooks me in with good and interesting characters, a great soundtrack and world that is fun to look around and interact with but lets me go with a rushed final episode that fails to deliver a good ending and take into account the choices you made throughout the game. It went a little Mass Effect 3. Also that lip syncing is just terrible.

#24 Dragon Quest - 7
Android - May 3rd - 7 hours
First Dragon Quest game I've played and considering its age it holds up well. I think the mobile version has some QOL changes to the original which helps. The old timey speak gets a little grating after a while. There was grinding as expected but playing on a tablet made it not so bad to grind as I watched TV. There are a few annoyances but the game is brief and charming enough that it's easy enough to look back fondly on.

#25 God of War - 8 PS4 - May 6th - 40 hours
A very well made game but with noticeable flaws. The presentation and voice acting are top tier, the kid isn't as annoying as feared. The combat is quite strategic and deeper than it appears, but the enemy variety is poor, same goes for the mini bosses. The bosses were laughable compared to other GoW games and the game likes to wrestle control away from the player. I also didn't like how the story kept moving the goalposts. It felt a bit bloated with a bunch of shit to collect and hundreds of lore writings that started off interesting but the more they threw at me the less I cared. They stuffed too much into the game and the pacing suffers in the last third. While the other GoW games felt like an intense race to the finish line this felt like a stroll through the park with the semi open world. The combat is the only part of the game that requires any skill of the player, the rest is all automatic or easy. This sounds really negative but overall I enjoyed most the time I spent with the game. I give it 4 stars because the combat was genuinely intense on hard mode, the presentation is outstanding and there are some memorable moments in the story.

#26 Mega Man Legacy Collection - 7 PS4 - May 12th - 12 hours
Not much to say, it's Mega Man, they're all pretty similar. I'd rank them 3>2>4>6>1>5.
As much I as like the old mega man games, I also sort of hate them, mainly how it trolls you with obstacles you can't know are there unless you've played it before. I used save states at the start of stages with no regret.

#27 Brutal Legend - 8 Xbox 360 - May 14th - 11 hours
Replay: I really like Brutal Legend, more than I did in 2010 when I first played it. The live action intro is great. The soundtrack is quality and so is the cast, Jack Black especially. I wish the story kept the humour it promises in the first hour but it sort of fizzles out and the game feels a bit unfinished like they ran out of time. I like the on foot missions but the game sort of ditches these in the second half to focus on the RTS battles, which are fun but control a little clunky and they're pretty easy if you take your time. I enjoyed exploring the open world for secrets and while the side missions are repetitive, they are fun and short enough to not be a problem.

#28 Resident Evil Zero - 6 Wii - May 19th - 6 hours
This game would have been much less annoying without the inventory system. No item box and you have to either lug around a massive hookshot the whole game or drop it somewhere and backtrack all the way when you need it. Didn't mind the partner system as much and the story is terrible other than that it's standard Resident Evil.

#29 Sly 2: Band of Thieves - 4 PS3 - May 22nd - 11 hours
I liked Sly 1, didn't think it was great but it was decent. The sequel however is just plain bad. It starts off okay but once you realise you've seen the best the game has to offer in the first level, it goes to shit. Here's a list of things I didn't like about Sly 2. Every level has the same set of repetitive missions, nearly every mission has an insta fail state, the only difference between the levels is seeing how shitty the mini games will be in this one. Making you play a 3rd of the game as Bentley should be illegal.
The game CONSTANTLY interrupts you with unstoppable dialogue cutscenes the game is FAR too long with each level lasting at least 90 mins, for some reason the cutscene volume is like 200% louder than the in game, the hubs are hard to navigate and there is often only one path to the highest areas, you have to backtrack to the safe house after every mission, the levels aren't designed to be navigated with Bentley or Murray and it's a pain in the arse doing so, and the game crashed multiple times.
The only good points I could give it is some Sly levels feel like the first game and the presentation is still pretty good. Rarely does a game rub me in all the wrong ways like Sly 2 lmao

#30 Kingdom Hearts Final Mix - 8 PS3 - May 27th - 19 hours
Replay: Wanted to try a proud mode play through and with the right abilities and use of spells it really wasn't very hard at all. But it was fun and now I want to play KH2 Critical mode which I've heard good things about

June
VDIUvvj.png

#31 Pokemon Crystal - 8 3DS - June 2nd - 33 hours
Replay: A game I'm very nostalgic for and enjoy however I think gen 2 is a little bit overrated retrospectively. The level curve and distribution of Pokemon is pretty bad, it's like they are ashamed of the new Pokemon and hide most of them away until late game. Grinding against lvl 40 wilds to beat Red wasn't very fun. Other than that it's Pokemon and a good one.

#32 South Park: The Stick of Truth - 8 PS3 - June 7th - 10 hours
Very enjoyable and funny game, lots in there for fans of the show. Only problems I had was it was really easy even on hard difficulty and frame rate problems.

#33 Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow - 8 GBA - June 10th - 5 hours
This game just feels good to play. The soul system offers a lot of variety, the design of the castle is great and the pacing is spot on.

#34 SUPERHOT - 7.5 Xbox One - June 28th - 3 hours
The length is disappointing but other than that its challenging and innovative.

July
lJRkJgw.png

#35 Crash Bandicoot - 7.5
PS4 - July 3rd - 6 hours
Another game I'm very nostalgic for but I definitely know it's not perfect though it looks nice with a new coat of paint. Uneven difficulty and the poor hit detection bring down an otherwise good game.

#36 Call of Duty: WWII - 7 Xbox One - July 8th - 6 hours
An overall enjoyable campaign with some good voice acting and some challenging missions. The story is watchable but the characters are copy and pasted straight from other WW2 movies and the 30fps in game cutscenes are jarring.

#37 Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light - 8 PS3 - July 12th - 6.30 hours
Good balance between co op action and puzzles, a lot of replayability and overall a lot more fun than the modern TR games

#38 Genji: Dawn of the Samurai - 7 PS2 - July 15th - 4.30 hours
Was better than I expected, I didn't realise it was an Onimusha clone before playing though not the same level of quality. With a longer and more challenging campaign this game could have been a lot better however I did enjoy it for what it was, a hack and slash with mashy combat and a dumb story and one that was over before I got bored with it.

#39 Bully - 8 PS4 - July 21st - 20 hours
Great game in a refreshing setting with a lot of side stuff to keep you busy

#40 Enclave - 6 PC - July 21st - 8 hours
Interesting game, similar to Rune but not as good. has some good stuff to it but the difficulty is uneven, the levels are very short and the melee combat is pretty bad. It looks very good for it's time.

#41 Devil May Cry HD - 8 PS3 - July 26th - 11 hours
Replay: My goal with this game was to at least beat it on hard as I'm a bit of a DMC noob and have only played them on normal before. I managed it and it's not too bad outside of the last 2 or 3 bosses which killed any hope of a DMD run, I just don't think I'd be able to beat nightmare 3 on that mode. Either way I'm happy I went back, I love the atmosphere and the amount of choice you have with how to tackle each fight

#42 Sacred 2: Gold - 6
PC - Aug 4th - 32 hours
I've had this game for years but always stopped halfway before beating it and I did have to force myself to finish it finally. I like exploring, fighting and looting..for 15 hours. Then it gets very repetitive. The game is just too big. The map is too big, too many enemies, too many boring sidequests (which you better do lest you be underleveled) and its just too long. it gets very tiring and by the end I couldn't wait for it to finish even though I enjoyed the start of the game a fair bit.

#43 The Darkness - 6 PS3 - Aug 10th - 6.30 hours
Very atmospheric with a decent plot but the execution isn't quite there. Some of the darkness powers are fun to use but the controls are clunky, the AI is dumb and the game runs like shit on PS3.

#44 Super Mario 3D Land - 8 3DS - Aug 15th - 13 hours
Enjoyable game from start to finish, if only it wasn't super easy but it was fun getting 100% nonetheless

#45 Donkey Kong Country Returns - 8 Wii - Aug 18th - 6.30 hours
The motion controls suck but other than that it's great. Very challenging which is good but occasionally felt a little trial and error

#46 Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix - 8 PS3 - Aug 21st - 35 hours
Replay: Critical mode. It's true what people say, critical does improve KH2 combat, well the bosses are much more challenging and strategic but for everything else I found it pretty much the same. The bosses are the highlight and some of the optional ones I couldn't even beat

#47 Diablo: Belzebub - 7 PC - Aug 25th - 12 hours
Holds up pretty well with the HD mod, though I didn't realise until playing the mod makes the game much harder which could be frustrating at times

#48 Splatoon 2 - 7 Switch - Aug 31st - 7 hours
(Campaign only) Some well designed and occasionally challenging levels but its over quick unless you want to grind for 100%

September

#49 Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay - 7 PC - Sep 3rd - 5 hours
Enjoyable story with good voice acting and atmosphere, I didn't think the stealth or the shooting were that good which is a shame because everything else is, similar to The Darkness

#50 Mafia II - 6 PS3 - Sep 7th - 11 hours
While the shooting and driving are much better than the first game and feel pretty good, the game rarely takes advantage of them. The story was much worse than the first game and pretty disappointing. The 40/50s atmosphere is great but this one feels like wasted potential.

#51 Ace Combat Zero - 7 PS2 - Sep 12th - 4 hours
Pretty standard stuff, I don't think it was quite as good as the other PS2 AC games, it feels like just an expansion and some missions feel identical to ones before, but more AC is still good fun

#52 Maximo vs Army of Zin - 8 - PS2 - Sep 12th - 7 hours
Even better than the first game, combat is improved and a lot of fun, level design is better, and the game is less punishing in general than 1. Platforming is better too but still a little iffy but overall a great game which deserves a sequel

#53 Red Faction - 5 PS2 - Sep 16th - 6 hours
Honestly didn't really like this one. The geo mod stuff is almost completely useless and unused, the controls are awkward, bad stealth sections and a terrible plot. Plods along at a very easy difficulty until the last hour where it gets stupidly hard.

#54 Legend of Grimrock - 8 PC - Sep 21st - 14 hours
Very challenging, great puzzles and level design, a bit obtuse at times but thoroughly enjoyable, definitely will check out the sequel.

#55 Mutant Mudds Deluxe - 7 PC - Sep 22nd - 7 hours
Pretty good, what you see is what you get, very tight controls, decent challenge and just well crafted overall.

#56 Dragon Age II - 6 PS3 - Sep 30th - 24 hours
Big step down from the first game but not altogether terrible. Has some good characters, combat is fun for the first half but then recycled environments, enemies appearing out of nowhere mid battle and boring main plot let the game down.

October
aJ5L8Wq.png

#57 Resident Evil 4 - 10 PS4 - Oct 7th - 27 hours
Replay: Masterpiece. Played through normal, the Ada missions then professional difficulty and loved every minute

#58 Costume Quest / Grubbins On Ice - 7 PC - Oct 12th - 6.30 hours
Fun writing, exploration and visuals make it an enjoyable experience even if the battle system is a bit too simple/easy.

#59 Oxenfree - 4 PC - Oct 14th - 3.30 hours
I know I'm in the minority on this one but I did not like this game. I found the characters unlikable and annoying, walking is very slow and boring and that's all you do, the story is not worth the gameplay, the dialogue system is almost good but flawed in the sense that you can't tell whether your sentence will queue up or interrupt someone else talking, which leads to moments where 2 people are talking about completely different things at once. It felt forced like the interruptions where supposed to mimic natural dialogue but end up doing the opposite.
To say something positive the voice acting is good and so is the background art.

#60 Doom 3 - 6 PC - Oct 19th - 9 hours
Not bad but felt like it was missing something. The weapons don't feel very powerful and a lot of the encounters play out identical, in identical looking areas. Later on the pace improves and you get some new locations. Enjoyable but not quite as good as it could have been.

#61 Van Helsing - 6 Xbox - Oct 20th - 4 hours
As far as licensed DMC clones go..this ain't bad. It's very short and easy and has framerate problems but has fun if shallow combat, some nice looking levels, decent bosses and a handful of unlockables. It's certainly more DMC2 than DMC1 but I enjoyed it more than the former. Speaking of DMC2 the game does rely on ranged weapons more than melee, there's like 6 guns and only 2 melee weapons, though it feels a bit more intended than DMC2.

#62 Alan Wake (+DLC) 7.5 360 - Oct 27th - 12 hours
Good atmosphere, decent story, gameplay is ok but it doesn't really change at all from the start to the end of the game. Pretty good but needed to pace myself to avoid getting bored of repetition.

November
CWPVa6X.png

#63 Warhammer: Space Marine - 6.5
PC - Nov 3rd - 6 hours
Starts off kinda boring but picks up, the mix of shooting and melee is quite fun but the level design never lets the game shine as much as it could.

#64 Final Fantasy XIII-2 - 7 PS3 - Nov 8th - 19 hours
A bit less linear than 13, the combat system is still fun and so is the monster catching but the story is just wack and scenes go on too long.
The random encounters are too easy and you only really have to turn your brain on for boss fights.

#65 Castlevania Mirror Of Fate HD 5.5 - PS3 - Nov 12th - 7 hours
Has a bit of an indentity crisis being neither a metroidvania or a classic style, ends up being an average imitation somewhere inbetween. Combat is quite boring although the bosses at least have some challenge. When the game keeps making you switch characters you lose any sense of progression

#66 Victor Vran 6 - PC - Nov 16th - 9 hours
The fast paced gameplay can be fun but it lacks in many areas compared to its peers in the same genre. There are very few weapons/skills, enemies variety is also lacking and they become increasily tedious to take down. You feel as powerful at level 4 as you do at 40. There is plenty to do but after the final boss was dead I was done. It's also full of meme humour.

#67 Enslaved 7.5 PS3 - Nov 23rd - 9 hours
Good story with great voice acting, gameplay is a bit simple and easy even on hard mode but it's still fun, I would have liked to see a deeper combat system with more combos but overall a well paced fun game

#68 Deus Ex 8.5 PC - Nov 27th - 17 hours

December

#69 Devil May Cry 3 9 PS3 - Dec 2nd - 28 hours

#70 Crash Bandicoot 2 7.5 PS4 - Dec 6th - 5 hours

Alright, let's do this. Hoping to have Gravity Rush 2 as my first game done before servers go down on the 19th.

Reserved.

I'm in for this, my backlog is monstrous. On average I finish about 25 games a year, but that's with binges and then huge lulls in between. I'd really like to spread things out, averaging one game per week sounds perfect. I'm out of work for most of this month so to be honest I could probably even beat most of these in January.

Currently playing:

NieR: Automata - About to finish route B. I reckon I can fully wrap this up this week.
Superhot - i've already played a few hours and i've heard it's short. Might be able to do it this week.
Hitman - A long term project. I've done 4/6 main missions, plus i'm attempting every elusive target per fortnight.
Cuphead - i'm in the last hub area, about half way done.
Super Mario Odyssey - just hit New Donk City.
Uncharted: Lost Legacy - progress counter last said 21%.
Persona 5 - got about 10 hours in a few months ago and stopped for some reason. Gonna resume, but very long term project.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - just started, literally watched the intro cutscene.
Thumper - level 7/9. Gotta have a lot of energy to even do one level.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle - World 3-1
Super Mario World - World 6 / 9. First time playing, the game has gotten pretty tricky. I'll resume it after Odyssey.

I am not feeling great about finishing this for my 4th year in a row but let's give it a shot.

---------------------
Game 1: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - 150 hours 1/5/18
While definitely not a bad game, it felt lackluster compared to its predecessors. The myriad QoL issues and stupid ass gacha mechanics also made it feel like a constant chore to play. I feel like with another few months in the oven this could have been a really great game but now I am leaving disappointed. These big ass RPGs really need to get their shit together on QoL issues when you have to repeat things for dozens of hours.

Game 2: Final Fantasy XIV - 40 hours 1/23/18
Playing this again with some friends and I forgot how boring the main story in ARR is for the longest time. Glad that
slog is over.

Game 3: Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward - 20 hours 1/31/18
Heavensward was a much needed improvement from the base game. The story was pretty good and the flying was a godsend.

Game 4: Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood - 40 hours 2/15/18
Really enjoyed playing this with my friends. We are just now getting into the Savage level endgame which should be a neat experience.

Game 5: Treasure Adventure World - 10 hours 3/9/18
I backed this one quite awhile ago and finally got around to playing it with the full release. Similar to Spelunky getting a "full" version this was a great upgrade and I am happy to have supported it. I got stuck in a few spots and had to actually give it a couple days in between to come back refreshed and find what I was missing. My PC actually crashed after the last boss died and there is no way I am doing that again so sadly this one won't make it to 100% like I originally planned.

Game 6: Battle Chasers: Nightwar - 35 hours 3/24/18
I didn't get around to playing this back when it released but I am glad a did now. Some of the necessary grinding was a bit much at time but overall it was a really great game. I would love to see more turn-based RPGs of this scope and quality since they are getting rarer at the AAA level now.

Game 7: Ni no Kuni II - 68 hours 4/9/18
I was really enjoying this game and planned to 100% it but a month long case of pneumonia sidetracked all games for me. I thought this was an improved sequel in almost all regards with the exception of the RTS battles and the weird overworld. I might check out the DLC when it is done but I find DLC is really weird in RPGs and most often require a new playthrough.

Game 8: God of War - 30 hours 5/28/18
The first couple hours of this were a real slog for me and I almost gave up on it. After pushing through the beginning, it really started to grow on me and I enjoyed it for the last 25 hours or so. Mimir was MVP obviously. I am probably going to get the platinum since I still want to explore the world more but I need to move onto other games soon since I am so far behind now.

Game 9: Titan Quest - 24 hours 6/5/18
Been trying to finish this game for years. Finally ended up finishing the base game with a friend and we are moving onto Immortal Throne now. If you take age into account, it is a pretty solid game. The QoL quibbles I have are largely offset by playing with friends. That being said, certain enemies causing insane lag was awful but seems to get better in the latter half of the game at least.

Game 10: Titan Quest: Immortal Throne - 12 hours 6/10/18
Not too much of an improvement over the base game but still decently fun. Starting to run out of steam on this one; I am hoping we can at least make it through Ragnarok.

Game 11: Titan Quest: Ragnarok - 14 hours 6/15/18
Ragnarok was an interesting expansion, especially after playing God of War and seeing a lot of the same lore. It got a little tiresome at the end but overall it was nice to finally play through the whole Titan Quest saga.

Game 12: The Division - 34 hours 7/9/18
I am neutral on this game after finishing it. The story and NPCs were all complete trash and the world is dull with repetitive missions. I did enjoy the shooting though and I hope the Division 2 fixes the repetitive nature and blandness. I am going to start the DLC soon with friends which I am guessing will markedly improve the experience.

Game 13: Dark Souls Remastered - 32 hours 7/11/18
Except for the rampant fucking PC cheaters, it has been fun revisiting this one. Not as polished or as good as I remembered but still an excellent game in its own right. Onward to the DLC now and the pain of trying to cut Kalameet's tail.

Game 14: Dark Souls Remastered: Artorias of the Abyss DLC - 10 hours 7/12/18
The amount of shitty invaders trying to hide with enemies or use cheese builds was unreal in this DLC. Thankfully, most of them were terrible. I am frankly glad this is over and the game (excluding Artorias himself) didn't hold up as well as I hoped.

Game 15: Elder Scrolls Online - 30 hours 7/29/18
Got this in a Humble Bundle awhile ago and decided to give it a go. I remember the beta being pretty bad but with all the updates it has been pretty fun playing with friends. Once I do all the story stuff I don't see myself doing any of the high end raids but that's not what I am really after in an Elder Scrolls game anyway.

Game 16: Chasm - 9 hours 7/31/18
This was one of the first games I ever Kickstarted. I enjoyed the game but I feel like the balance was a little off and the game would have been better served without the seeding system. Overall, this was an enjoyable game while not quite reaching the highs I hoped after 5 years.

Game 17: Octopath Traveler - 35 hours 8/15/18
I was super pumped for this game and ended up being pretty disappointed with it. The lack of a cohesive story along with not being able to swap out your main character until late game really hurt my interest. Missing a lot of the QoL enhancements from Bravely Default probably led to my burnout too. Hopefully the inevitable sequel improves on this attempt.

Game 18: Guacamelee 2 - 10 hours 8/16/18
A great sequel even if it was more of the same. The mechanics were all finely tuned and I had a great time with this one. The setting is cool too and I wish more games explored it. I hope Drinkbox thinks about another Metroidvania with a different setting and mechanics just so I can see what else they pull out.

Game 19: Torchlight 2 - 25 hours 8/20/18
Did another playthrough of this with a friend except we used the Synergies mod this time. It was fun but a multiplayer bug made it WAY more stressful than it should have been. We actually started before Torchlight Frontiers was announced and after playing through 2 again, I am really looking forward to seeing what they can do for frontiers.

Game 20: Dragon Quest - 10 hours 9/17/18
Wow, this one did not age well and I even played the remake version. I had very fond memories of playing this as a good that I should have left as memories! I did get a nice amount of nostalgia from this though in spite of the archaic mechanics.

Game 21: Dragon Quest II - 15 hours 9/26/18
Hell of an upgrade over the original game but god damn does the Prince of Cannock suck ass. I started 3 before I finished this one and it was almost hard to go back. Still it was cool to revisit gaming history again.

Game 22: Dragon Quest XI - 80 hours 9/30/18
The two difficulty settings that are both poorly balanced are a black mark on an otherwise fucking fantastic game. I did this on super strong monsters and it really turned into a slog but default difficulty was complete braindead boredom. Other than the difficulty complaints, I loved everything about the game and I hope it does well so we get XII.

Game 23: Dragon Quest III - 30 hours 10/21/18
This one was a good as I remember from being a kid. Had to do a little grinding for the boss troll but overall this was a smooth ride with a nostalgia trip.

Game 24: Shadow of the Tomb Raider - 20 hours 10/26/18
I am pretty neutral on this game. It was fun enough but felt like more of the same form the last 2. Hopefully they go back to the drawing board for the next game and come back with something new and fresh.

Game 25: Diablo III - Eternal Edition - 30 hours 11/2/18
Did I really buy Diablo on another platform and play it again even though I have played through over half the seasons to date? You bet your ass I did.

Game 26: Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country - 30 hours 11/13/18
Really enjoyed this standalone expansion. The case of characters was fantastic (except moody ass Jin) and I think I enjoyed this more than the base game. I hope more RPGs go this route for DLC as standalone instead of adding onto the main game and trying to remember wtf you were doing.

Alright I'm not confident that I can do it again this year, I'm just doing this to keep track without a particular goal in mind or with filler games.

2016: 92 games completed
2017: 94 games completed

JANUARY:
1) ARMS - Cleared arcade mode with every character and even won a ranked match with my main Lola Pop!
arms-lola-5.jpg

2) Danganronpa V3 - What a fitting possible end to the series. I don't know where they would go from here if they decided to continue so I just hope they end it with one of the most fascinating twists I've ever experienced in a game. I can tell why it was so divisive, but for me it works.

Danganronpa-V3-Key-Art.jpg

3) Doki Doki Literature Club - Played through this one over the course of a week or so with my fiance knowing that there was going to be a bizarre twist eventually. Well, the twist paid off and it was a surreal and horrifying experience for certain. Easily recommended and enjoyable for the price of free and at only 5 hours long.
DDLC-IMGMR-MAIN.jpg

4) Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - I'm shocked at just how much I ended up loving this game in spite of its myriad flaws. The combat system is a total blast once properly understood (took me about 30 hours or so before I knew what I was doing out of a total 80 hours of playtime). It's the most disastrous masterpiece I've played in years and I love it to death. The characters really grew on me over time and I found the game to only get better and better as it progressed. Xenoblade demands so much from its players, but for those that can bear it there's hardly a more satisfying JRPG anywhere, let alone on the Switch.
Xenoblade-Chronicles-2-MGW.jpg

5) What Remains of Edith Finch - A very brief game, but one that I found quite affecting and original. It pushes you along in a way that never feels as though you're being shuffled around but still manages to keep the pacing tight and purposeful. It's ultimately a tragic tale with some phenomenal short stories. Highly recommended game that I'm glad I played finally.

FEBRUARY:
6) Yakuza Kiwami - While not as great an experience as 0 was, Kiwami still delivered a good story with a fantastic main and supporting cast. I am so glad that SEGA found a way to get a new generation of people to take notice of the Yakuza series because they've not got a brand new fan in me. Looking forward to getting around to the rest of the main games in due time.

7) Celeste - This game is an instant classic to me and worth all of the praise its received. I couldn't really be happier with it. Took around 6 hours to finish with most strawberries collected and none of the bonus content, but I'll be coming back. It's controls are exquisite and the overall story was tasteful and profound. Early contender for my top 10 of 2018 list and one that will be hard to shake from it.
celeste-game.jpg

8) Shadow Of The Colossus - The best possible version of one of the greatest games of all time. It's an unbelievable experience and an unrivaled piece of art.
ShadowOfTheColossus-2.jpg

9) Skyrim - This was my first time ever playing it and I have to say I ended up enjoying it more than I anticipated. Nice having it on the go, too. Played just through the main quest with some other optional stuff as an Argonian and it's definitely a game I would recommend to people who are into the idea of really doing role playing. Personally, I prefer more linear design and structure.
gP7Mgy2.jpg

10) Bayonetta - It's a more frustrating game than I remember and yet nevertheless it is masterful in many ways. I love the character design and the action and how tight of a package it is when you're just focusing on the gameplay. A few strange choices here and there (QTE, vehicle sections, overly long exposition), but I would still very much call this game a winner and among the best character action games ever. Looking forward to playing the sequel, which I recall enjoying a good deal more.
Wvt3uN3.jpg

11) Bayonetta 2 - While I do think that the first game is very good, this one simply blows it out of the water. It is in my view superior in every meaningful aspect and is one of the best action games I have ever played. It's simply unbeatable in my view and is both hilariously over the top, full of charm, and controls like a dream. It is challenging while never nearly as unfair as the first.
bayonetta_2_2014_game-wide.jpg

12) DOOM - I think it's the best FPS campaign probably ever. Loved replaying it on the Switch with the gyro controls after the latest patch. It made the game a great deal more satisfying and the graphics are pretty damn impressive considering the hardware. Still think the best version is on PS4, but I liked being able to take this with me!

MARCH:
13) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - The Champions' Ballad - While I wasn't overly enthused at first, once the DLC gets going it really is a substantial and wonderful addition to the base game. I'm pretty excited to keep casually playing and go after more shrines on my new motorcycle!

n5NgCzF.png

14) Fortnite - Not a game that can be "finished" as such, but I think I have played my fill of it and I'm unlikely to return so...that's that! Not a bad experience by any means, but there are superior ways to spend one's time.
H4S3w0a.jpg

15) PUBG - Almost got a chicken dinner (second place!) which may be about as well as I ever do. I've put some time in on this game since getting it Monday and I must say I'm impressed with it. May not be quite the phenomenon that Fortnite is but for my money (wait...I got them both for free) PUBG is the superior experience.
PUBG-Feature-Image.jpg

APRIL:
16) A Way Out - Was hoping I'd enjoy this game way more than I ultimately did even playing through with a close friend. It was just all over the place in terms of tone and quality and ended up doing not a lot of anything particularly well. An interesting concept but not a successful experiment.
awayout.jpg

17) Steamworld Dig - This was my second time playing through the game but on the Switch years after my first time on the 3DS. I like it way more than I remember than I did. It's a fantastic game and I think it can be safely recommended to just about anyone. It's a quick and delightful platformer with great controls and a nice aesthetic and meaningful progression. Awesome game.
steamworld-dig.jpg

18) Far Cry 5 - This is the first Far Cry I spent any real amount of time with and I loved it. Much dumebr game than I expected it to be, but nearly all of the time I spent with it was a blast. Loved my companion characters (especially Grace, Boomer, and Cheeseburger) and despised the villains which was probably the intent. Had some problems for sure but I'd say it's another early contender for my top 10 of the year.
Far-Cry-5-Logo.jpg

19) Kirby Star Allies - Played through the entire game in co-op with my fiancé and we had a great time with this breeezy game. Final boss was crazy epic for a Kirby game! I look forward to playing a lot more of it even past the 100% save file.
kirby-star-allies-nintendo-twitter.jpeg

20) SteamWorld Heist - Image & Form have officially earned my money day 1 on any game they make. From SteamWorld Dig to SteamWorld Dig 2 and now with SteamWorld Heist it's almost as if these people are incapable of making a bad game. Heist is tremendously fun and satisfying and is like the other games in the SteamWorld family only in tone and aesthetic. The gameplay is a lot like XCOM, I'm told, but I haven't played that so for me it's like Mario + Rabbids. Challenging and varied game that I loved the whole way through. Very interested in doing NG+ sometime soon.
2016-06-22-064442.jpg

21) SteamWorld Dig 2 - And my love for the SteamWorld series just keeps rolling along. In the past few weeks I went from somebody who thought "yeah these games are pretty cool" to it being one of my absolute favorite modern franchises. I think based on my own preferences that Dig 2 is the best thing they've done so far and an absolutely essential contemporary Metroidvania. The path to 100% is not overly demanding (except the final trials, which were exceptionally challenging) and it is a constant pleasure to explore and gain more abilities as well as to upgrade yourself based on what kind of strengths one values. Phenomenal game.

MAY:
22) Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope - Although I played through the other campaigns more recently, it's been a while since I played through the original Shovel Knight story. All these years later it still holds up. Easily a modern classic. Also did the gender swap thing and went for 100% completion just to change it up a bit!
shovel-knight-shovel-of-hope.jpg

23) God Of War - This is easily going to be my favorite game of the year and probably the best exclusive PS4 will get throughout its entire lifetime. It's an incredible achievement in virtually every single way and is a nearly perfect experience that I practically had to tear myself away from time and time again to you know...life my life and deal with real world responsibility. I spent a considerable amount of time in the "side-content" (that never feels secondary, somehow) and ended up going back for the Platinum Trophy. God Of War is astounding.
God-of-War-Kratos-and-Atreus-Wallpaper-4K.jpg

24) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Still going back for all of the KONG letters, puzzle pieces, and time attack stuff, but I did clear the main story including probably the toughest final boss in the series. Tropical Freeze is a tremendous game (maybe the best on Switch? It was certainly the best Wii U game) and feels just as vital and relevant now as it did 4 years ago. Funky Kong is a cool addition and having this game both portably and with drastically improved performance is a wonder.
donkey-kong-country-tropical-freeze-3.jpg

25) Yakuza 6 - Even though I only came into this series last year with 0 and Kiwami, the final tale of Kazuma Kiryu still meant a lot for me. Yakuza has some of the richest stories and environments in gaming and with 6 solidified how tremendous its lead character is. It's a magnificent game and a true achievement. Can't wait to get the rest of this franchise on PS4. It's amazing.
yakuza-6-ps4_316737_pn2-768x432.jpg

26) Mega Man - I love this game but so many aspects have not aged well! I'm really glad that the Switch version has a rewind button because it makes the game a fast an enjoyable experience rather than one that is full of trial and error. I so respect this game for being the foundation of maybe my favorite series, but at this point I think I can easily say it's the weakest of the 10 Classic games. Love you, Mega.
1000

27 and 28) Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon - Once on normal mode and once on nightmare mode. Loved everything that this out-of-nowhere 8-bit Castlevania-like brought to the table. $10 is an exceedingly reasonable price for what is the most effective recreation of the original Castlevania trilogy ever. All the characters are satisfying to play as, the big bosses are cool, and the music and visuals are perfect. Big recommendation for fans of IGA's work.
BCotM-Cover.jpg

29) Mega Man 2 - Every bit the classic that it's recognized as. I play this game seemingly every year (many Mega Man games, really) and I adore 2. The original Mega Man is decent, but 2 is when everything came together to form a near perfect game. It's almost completely free of unfair deaths, which is a big plus in a Mega Man game. Fits perfect on the Switch, too.
maxresdefault.jpg

30) Street Fighter - Cleared the arcade mode with Ryu, which is about all you can do in this awful, awful game. The original Street Fighter is one of the worst games I've played in a long time and it's remarkable just how great its immediate sequel is in comparison. It must be the biggest jump in quality from one game to the next ever. This game is nearly unplayable, extremely cheap, difficult, and unsatisfying. I'm glad it's over and I never intend to touch it again.
maxresdefault.jpg

JUNE:
31) Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition
- This game sure is great for what it is but what it is isn't entirely for me. Finished the Legend Mode and may play some Adventure Mode since that's where people say the "real meat" of the game is, but I'm worried about it not being super satisfying. Guess I'll see!
si-wiiu-hyrulewarriors-image1600w-1073738.jpeg

32) Street Fighter II - What can be said about SFII that hasn't been said already? This is in my view the biggest leap from an original game to its sequel. This game spawned innumerable copycats (and some legitimately great ones at that) and really created a genre. It's amazing all these years later and it was super cool to play the very difficult arcade original on my Switch through all the way with Ken. Took me a lot longer than it used to.
tumblr_mdt438FHin1r858p5o5_r2_12802016761619705.jpg

33) Detroit: Become Human - Probably the game that finally made me appreciate Quantic Dream. The sheer amount of options present in each chapter is staggering. I love Detroit and the characters therein. The game has some problems to be sure, but it is beautiful, fun, and surprising. As of now it's among my favorite games of 2018, but we will see if I feel the same way by the end of the year if it's top 10 material. My guess is no, but it will be close!
13448.jpg

34) Mega Man 3 - Very likely to be the best classic Mega Man of the NES era. Certainly it's at least as good as 2 with more content, character, Rush the dog instead of "ITEM", and the very good slide maneuver added. Great music, nice bosses, and a pretty fair challenge throughout. Love this game to death and will swear by it until the end.
1000

35) Beyond : Two Souls - Well I must admit this is at the very least a beautiful game and the acting by Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe is really good compared to the majority of game performances. Playing this immediately after the pretty great Detroit made its flaws stand out all the more because there is so little meaningful player choice in comparison. The plot does not do anything particularly interesting even if it does have moments and I can't for the life of me figure out why it was originally told out of chronological order since that did not add anything to the quality of the narrative. It's not a bad game but of the three Quantic Dream games on the PS4 it's the one I'm most hesitant to recommend to anyone. Detroit is such a huge step up in every way.
large.jpg

36) Mega Man 4 - I feel much more lukewarm on Mega Man 4 than I recall since my last playthrough. If it were the only Mega Man game I'd played lately I probably would have loved it, but I do think it's a step down from 3 in a number of key ways. Mostly, it is not nearly as memorable between the so-so music, level design, and bosses. It is a straight up iteration that does less for the series in terms of developing it than pretty much any game within the series prior or since. It's fine overall, but I'd definitely put it in the bottom half of Classic Mega Man games.
1000

37) Mega Man 5 - I would put this in the bottom half of Classic Mega Man games. It's perfectly serviceable, doesn't do anything wrong per se, and has the same tight and challenging gameplay that one expects from the series. BEAT is a cool addition and offers something to collect so that's nice. I remember liking 6 a lot more so I think Legacy Collection 1 will finish strong even if it sags near the end.
latest

38) Heavy Rain - I hadn't played this game since it originally came out but this copy came with my digital deluxe copy of Detroit: Become Human. The game does not hold up so well but I think it is still more interesting overall than Beyond: Two Souls even though the acting in this game is considerably worse. Heavy Rain is more experimental and interesting and there were actual consequences for when I failed in this one. I would put it about even with Beyond: Two Souls overall and say that Detroit is clearly the best of the Quantic Dream games on PS4. Can't really recommend Heavy Rain in this day and age but it has its merits to be sure.
Heavy-Rain-heavy-rain-35806007-1920-1080.jpg

39) Mega Man 6 - Although it's not a popular opinion, 6 may be my favorite of the original 6 NES Mega Man games. I think it does so many things well and the Rush power and jet adapters do a lot to enhance the design of levels. It's a great looking and sounding game that holds up really well and offers solid action and less frustrations than the rest of the series. Clearly the best out of 4-6 and at least as good as 2 and 3 if less iconic.
latest

40) Arcade Archives: Donkey Kong - Played through all 3 versions of Donkey Kong as well as the caravan 5-minute mode and it is just such a timeless classic. Nice to have this on the Switch and to be able to go back to it for a quick 3-minute game whenever.
jrp2pjqvek6jh7obfyjj.jpg

41) Mega Man 7 - I think this has finally climbed into the top half of my favorite games of the 10 Mega Man Classic games so far, even if just barely. I love the art and the music and how big and beautiful the sprites are. They really do not make games this boisterous and colorful anymore on a massive scale, so it's always fun to return to this one. My only real gripes are with the final Wily fight, which is so much harder than literally every other boss in the Classic series that it's laughable. Very unnecessary spike right at the end.

42) Mega Man 8 - I had a much better time with this game than I ever have before. For whatever reason, I had relatively little difficulty with any portion of the game and that includes the generally terrible "jump, jump, slide, slide!" that is awful but I got through faster than any other playthrough. Overall, Mega Man 8 is now a game I can say I actively enjoy despite its problems. It's very nice to look at and has good (but not particularly memorable) music, although that is tempered by awful cutscenes, horrendous voice acting, and some dorky animations for Mega Man. Really solid game overall and a better Mega Man game than I used to give it credit for. I would put it about middle of the pack in terms of quality for the Classic series.
5bdd7083fb2b13abcf4e32b0c26d2d15.jpg

43) Mega Man 9 - Having replayed every Classic series Mega Man game this year I can unequivocally state that 9 is the best of the bunch. It removes the excesses of later games in the franchise and gets back to the things Mega Man did best: jumping and shooting. The level gimmicks are all great and unique, I have a use for each and every one of the boss items, and barring a few difficulty spikes in the Wily Castle it all felt pretty fair in its challenge. I love Mega Man 9!
latest

44) Mega Man 10 - While I still think this is a step down from Mega Man 9 , it is not a huge step down. There are some great stages in here (I'm partial to Sheep Man, Chill Man, and Strike Man) but some level design is not as intentional and the music is not as good nor are the weapons as useful across the board. I think 10 was really solid, but if they were going to just keep going in this same direction then I'm glad the break between this and 11 was so long.
wp_01_1600x1200.jpg

JULY:
45) Mario Tennis Aces - Jesus Christ. I can't remember the last time I struggled so much to get through a campaign mode. The Adventure Mode in Mario Tennis Aces is brutally difficult. I think some people flew through it in a matter of 2 hours, but it took me at least 5 hours due to getting stuck at a couple of major walls in the story. The Blooper fight was the biggest barrier I've dealt with in a game in years. Boom Boom and "Bowcien" were also very difficult for me. I guess the Adventure Mode was intended as a long tutorial, but that must be the hardest tutorial since Driver. I'll play some online matches in the future, but I have a headache just thinking about Mario Tennis Aces right now.
Mario_Tennis_Aces_Header.jpg

46) The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit - A fun, free prelude to Life Is Strange 2 that shows how much DONTNOD has learned about these types of narrative-based adventure games. Chris is a great character who is very charming and his circumstances are easy to empathize with. I look forward to seeing him again in LiS 2.
captain-spirit-review-1.jpg

47) Splatoon 2 : Octo Expansion - What started out as a frustrating and intimidating DLC ultimately ended up being a great test of my skills and patience. I think Octo Expansion is remarkably good and well worth the cost. Ended up loving it from the easier challenges that I cleared on the first try to the ones I really had to dedicate time to finish there were very few bad levels in the whole bunch. Highly recommended for fans of Splatoon.
article_octoexpansion_2018-03-08_large.jpg

48) Bloodborne - Finished up a new game + that I was roughly halfway through from more than a year ago. It's still an amazing game and easily all-time top 10. The atmosphere, combat, and level design is just unbelievable and I was able to pick up where I left off without a hitch. When the generation is over I think this will be considered the masterpiece.
large.jpg

July:
49) Hollow Knight - I am utterly astounded by the quality of this game. Finished my first run in 30 hours and 96% completion and I feel like I still have so much to see and do. It is an absolutely essential game for anyone who has ever enjoyed a Castlevania, Metroid, or Soulsborne game. This is probably the best 2D game I've played in a decade and among the very best bar none. Beautiful graphics, outstanding soundtrack, snappy gameplay, and a meaningful sense of progression. Does so little wrong it's not even worth discussing. Masterpiece. EDIT: Went back for full 107% completion and finished in just under 35 hours. Loooooove it forever.
banner_image.jpg

50) Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - This is probably the cutest and sweetest little game ever. You can blaze through to the credits in an afternoon but there are so many fun collectibles and bonus content to do that it's worth playing over and over again. I did a little bit of the new 2P mode, which is unnecessary but fine, and I intend to actually 100% the game this time which is something I came close to doing on the Wii U back when it launched nearly four years ago. All in all, I think El Capitan Todd is a must play and must own game for the Switch and I couldn't recommend it more highly to people who don't need their games to be difficult or violent. It's a lovely work of art.
large.jpg

51) For Honor - The core gameplay is pretty good, but the main story/campaign is basically the same thing as Mario Tennis Aces. You get a brief (5 to 6 hours) campaign that has a totally forgettable story and sets up the premise of the multiplayer, which is clearly by far the real draw. It's effectively a long tutorial and not the kind of thing I would recommend necessarily. I will play the multiplayer, but there's nothing that would ever draw me to play the story mode again.
for_honor.jpg

52) Street Fighter III: Third Strike - This is my first time playing any of the Street Fighter III games and I have been so impressed with the animation and the technicality of the game. The characters are less appealing to me than those found in II and the Alpha series, but they are nevertheless really well designed and memorable. I ran through the Arcade Mode with Alex and could see myself playing a lot more Third Strike specifically if the circumstances were favorable to it, but I doubt I will ever prefer it to any of the Alpha games or the II series. Still, great gameplay!
npub-30301-ss10

53, 54) Sonic Mania Plus - Played through the brand new and fantastic Encore Mode with Mighty, Ray, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Went back and collected each of the 7 chaos emeralds which was fun for the most part and a huge pain in the ass to get the last one. Also did a full regular Mania run with Mighty! Mania Plus is a phenomenal upgrade to an already near perfect platformer and I would say by far the best game in the over 25 year old Sonic franchise. Encore Mode was totally worth the $5 cost and I would recommend it easily to any fan of platformers.

Let's go, 2018! This'll make year number five (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018).

Game 1: Assassin's Creed: Unity (PC, ~20 hours)
Game 2: Assassin's Creed: Unity - Dead Kings (PC, ~5 hours)

Pretty decent, actually. Definitely not as bad as I was expecting, and overall I might've enjoyed it more than Syndicate.

Game 3: Forza Horizon 3: Blizzard Mountain (Xbox One, ~6 hours)
Game 4: Forza Horizon 3: Hot Wheels (Xbox One, ~8 hours)

Two really good expansions to a great game. Hot Wheels was a little shallow, though.

Game 5: Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus (PC, ~15 hours)
Eh. I went into this expecting something truly great like The New Order, but everything just felt "off" somehow. It certainly didn't live up to its predecessor.

Game 6: Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (PC, ~19 hours)
Game 7: Assassin's Creed: Syndicate - The Dreadful Crimes (PC, ~4 hours)
Game 8: Assassin's Creed: Syndicate - The Last Maharaja (PC, ~5 hours)
Game 9: Assassin's Creed: Syndicate - Jack the Ripper (PC, ~5 hours)

Pretty good. I enjoyed it, but it definitely was wearing out its welcome by the time I was finished with the DLC. There's such a thing as too much content, especially if it's cookie-cutter.

Game 10: Gravity Rush 2: Another Story: The Ark of Time – Raven's Choice DLC (PS4 ~5 hours)
I'm always down for more Gravity Rush. This wasn't particularly great or anything, but I enjoyed being able to jump back into the game for a bit.

Game 11: Divinity: Original Sin 2 (PC, ~110 hours)
Fantastic combat system, semi-lackluster story. No single part of it was bad, but the writing was definitely the weakest link (especially as there was a lot of it). I still really enjoyed it overall, though.

Game 12: Chariot (PC, ~13 hours)
Not great, and often frustrating in co-op. Wouldn't really recommend it.

Game 13: Super Mario Odyssey - 100% Collection Cleanup (Switch, ~12 hours)
More Mario time is always a plus.

Game 14: Nex Machina (PC, ~4 hours)
Very polished, and extremely fun, but way too short and shallow. It was a good time, though.

Game 15: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - System Rift (PC, ~5 hours)
Game 16: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - A Criminal Past (PC, ~6 hours)

Two decent DLCs for a great game.

Game 17: RiME (PS4, ~5 hours)
I get what they were going for here, but it's too rough-around-the-edges to fully appreciate in the manner they expect you to.

Game 18: Okami HD (PC, ~45 hours)
One of the best PS2-era games, and it still holds up today. One of my favorites from the early 2000's is still a favorite today.

Game 19: Shadow of the Colossus (PS4, ~7 hours)
Talk about the other end of the spectrum after Okami. One of my favorites from the PS2-era that's not one of my favorites today. The game's nostalgic, but the gameplay hasn't held up well at all. The remaster was really well done, though.

Game 20: Snake Pass (PC, ~6 hours)
A good, very unique game. Not sure how to explain it, but I enjoyed it.

Game 21: The Sexy Brutale (PC, ~6 hours)
This came out of nowhere for me. I had no expectations going in, but I really, really liked it. Fantastic murder-mystery/time-loop game.

Game 22: Mr. Shifty (PC, ~5 hours)
Eh, it's alright. It loses steam about halfway through, but the first half is really good.

Game 23: Transformers: Devastation (PC, ~6 hours)
Not a fan. I like Transformers, but this just felt kind of hollow and empty. Halfway in I started just rushing the levels to finish them.

Game 24: Splasher (PC, ~5 hours)
Again, starts out strong, but about halfway through veers into "cheap" difficulty spikes. Not a bad game, just uneven.

Game 25: Dangerous Golf (PC, ~ 6 hours)
Pretty decent for what it is, but there's not much to it.

Game 26: Splatoon 2 Campaign (Switch, ~5 hours)
I was hoping for something better than the Splatoon 1 campaign (which this is!) but it's still kind of lackluster. Some of the level music is very annoying, too.

Game 27: Watch_Dogs: Bad Blood (PC, ~6 hours)
I never played this when it came out, but it looks like I didn't miss much. It's "okay" but nothing amazing.

Game 28: Super Mario Run (Main Worlds) (iOS, ~5 hours)
Mario on the go. Pretty fun for what it is.

Game 29: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition (PC, ~25 hours)
I came back to this after playing The Witcher 3, as I'd never played the previous entries. Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit -- it certainly contextualized some stuff in The Witcher 3. Some aspects haven't held up well, but I'm always down for more Witcher.

Game 30: Hollow Knight (1st Ending) (PC, ~20 hours)
Game 31: Hollow Knight (2nd, 3rd Ending; All Bosses/Items) PC, ~25 hours)

Fantastic Metroidvania. Beautiful artwork, great music, never felt overly-cheap (although it is difficult later on!). Really awesome, I highly recommend it.

Game 32: Black The Fall (PC, ~3.5 hours)
Not bad for a LIMBO/INSIDE type game. The setting was interesting.

Game 33: Black Mesa (PC, ~12 hours)
I waited to play this for a while, thinking it would be done by now. Now I've played 90% of it and have to wait for Xen.

Game 34: Dishonored: Death of the Outsider (PC, ~13 hours)
Game 35: Dishonored: Death of the Outsider - Original Game+ (PC, ~3 hours)

Pretty enjoyable. Not sure if I liked it as much as base-game Dishonored 2, but it was really good.

Game 36: Lost Castle - All Normal Endings (PC, ~40 hours)
Game 37: Lost Castle - Nightmare Endings + 100% (PC, ~33 hours)

I've got a love-hate relationship with this. Sometimes it's very fun, other times it's crazy cheap. For a rogue-lite, it doesn't really nail the sense of progression. Overall I had some fun in co-op.

Game 38: Rayman Legends (PS4, ~35 hours)
Great platformer for co-op.

Game 39-41: Dark Souls Remastered (PC (NG, NG+, NG++), ~47 hours)
It's been a while since I played through Dark Souls, so I was looking forward to this. Overall the remaster did a good job (even with some of the head-scratcher changes) and I'll take any excuse to head back to Lordran.

Game 42: The Signal from Tolva (PC, ~5 hours)
Eh, it's okay. I was expecting something else, and some of the puzzles are pretty cruel in how they work. It's alright, wouldn't recommend it unless someone really likes The Talos Principle (even though that's a way better game!).

Game 43: Prey: Mooncrash (PC, ~18 hours)
Not what I wanted after playing Prey, but it actually turned out to be pretty great. It's hard to explain, but overall I really liked it -- shortcomings and all.

Game 44: Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered (PC, ~12 hours)
The gameplay hasn't aged very well, but blowing stuff up or tearing down buildings with a hammer is always fun.

Game 45: A Hat in Time (PC, ~17 hours)
Very fun platformer. I liked it quite a bit.

Game 46: RAGE (PC, ~20 hours)
Not bad, not great. It's definitely a 360-era "brown-filter" title.

Game 47: Yakuza 0 (PC, ~58 hours)
I wasn't sure what to expect with this, but I enjoyed it for what it is. The hype surrounding it was definitely a little nuts, so what I got wasn't quite what I was expecting, but I had fun with it.

Game 48: The Surge (PC, ~25 hours)
Game 49: The Surge: A Walk in the Park (PC, ~4 hours)
Game 50: The Surge NG+ Cleanup (PC, ~6 hours)

Not really a Souls-like in the traditional sense. Once I stopped trying to play it like a Souls game and started playing it as an Action-RPG with some Souls-like mechanics I enjoyed it quite a bit more. Overall I really liked it.

Game 51: Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4, ~30 hours)
Finishing out the year with Spider-Man. I couldn't wait for this -- I'd been dying to play it since it was announced. Thankfully it lived up to my expectations (it's been a while since a Spider-Man game did that!) and I finally got to play a good Spider-Man game again. It wasn't perfect, but the flaws were easier to overlook as the rest of the package was so tight and polished.

Multiplayer
Game 52: Splatoon 2 (Switch, ~30 hours)
I really enjoyed the multiplayer for this. Shame about the online services now, as it means I won't be able to play it. The hackers kind of started the downward spiral before the online subscription, though.

1 - Gears of War 2 - (XB1) - Completed 1/6/18
I'm not sure how many new games I'm going to buy this year. There are so many new ones that I never end up playing. I think I'm going to play more "continuing" games, as well as games that I enjoy playing. Gears 2 is right near the top of that second category. I really hope to see a remaster of the game at some point. It still plays great, but it's not the prettiest game in the world any longer.

2 - Gears of War 1 Ultimate Edition - (PC) - Completed 1/8/18
This seems a little backwards, but I just recently got the PC version. Looks absolutely gorgeous on my system, so I made an exception. Keyboard and mouse feel great.

3 - Gears of War 3 - (XB1) - Completed 1/13/18
I wonder how many times I've played through this game. How many hours I've spent on just the single player. Maybe I'll try out horde mode for fun some time.

4 - Gears of War 4 - (XB1/PC) - Completed 1/17/18
Frickin gorgeous game. I really hope we hear something about the next Gears game this year.

5 - Gears of War Judgment - (XB1) - Completed 1/24/18
So much damn fun. I wish there were a sub series for Gears.

6 - Grand Theft Auto V - (PC) - Completed 1/28/18
Really the only thing that I dislike about this game is that it ends. I've finished the game 6 times now, and I always feel a little sad knowing that the game is about to end. Doing side quests after the main story just doesn't do it for me. It feels hollow without an ongoing story. It's a shame that all of the work that could have been done on DLC campaign was instead done on the online portion, which I have no interest in.

7 - Nier Automata - (PS4) - Completed 2/3/18
The first ending. I like it, but performance is definitely a problem.

8 - The Last of Us - (PS4) - Completed 2/10/18
Woohoo! I picked up all the golden tickets! Slowly but surely I'm picking up all the things. That could be going for years of playthroughs.

9 - Max Payne 3 - (PC) - Completed 2/11/18
This has been a long time coming. I abandoned it many times over because really it doesn't play like other max payne games, especially max payne 2 (my favorite of the series). It's not the ballet of death that I found in MP2. The only reason I found it more palatable than before was my repeat playthroughs of GTAV, which uses a very similar combat system. MP3 is FAR more of a cover shooter than previous entries. In many ways this is not a Max Payne 2 game.
With that said, I did enjoy the game for what it was. A good cover based shooter.

10 - Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 - (PC) - Completed 2/17/18
Still tons of fun, even all these years later, and the god knows how many replays later.

11 - Call of Duty 2 - (PC) - Completed 2/25/18
This is actually only the second time I've finished this game. I remember it being fairly long, but not this long. I'd say double the length of the average COD game. Really enjoyed it. I'm glad I got the bundle. Well worth the $20 I spent.

12 - Call of Juarez Gunslinger - (PC) - Completed 3/11/18
Oh my god. So the last time I played this game (long ago back in 2014). I got to a difficult duel and, apparently, rage quit. I wasn't sure how I had left the game and I wanted to check it out. As it turns out, I rage quit at the very last duel in the game. All I did was stumble through that last duel and I was done. Credits roll. That's just hilarious. I don't think I'll finish a shorter game this year. Lasted all of 20 minutes, tops.

13 - Diablo 3 - (PC) - Completed 3/17/18
Completed campaign with crusader.

13 - Gears of War Ultimate Edition - (XB1) - Completed 3/25/18
Got a little bored, so I decided to play this again.

14 - Call of Duty Modern Warfare - (XB1) - Completed 3/31/18
Nice quick playthrough on a quiet saturday. The game was just added to backwards compatibility, so why not?

15 - Wolfenstein The Old Blood - (PC) - Completed 4/7/18
I finished this game on XB1 back when it came out. The initial stealth section of the game can be annoying, but the rest of the game is wonderful.

16 - Far Cry 3- (PC) - Completed 4/9/18
I've been working on this for years, off and on. Definitely worth playing. I thought that the there was some sluggishness in the gameplay that made some sections more difficult than it should have been. The mouse and keyboard controls were on the shitty side as well. I ended up going to a controller, because it's obvious that Ubisoft designed the game for that input.

17 - Far Cry 4 - (PC) - Completed 4/13/18
Woohoo shortest game ever!! I'm just kidding of course. I'll edit this section when I finish the rest of the game. Though I have to say that I do like this quick ending.

18 - Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus - (PC) - Completed 4/15/18
Really good game. Already looking forward to the next Wolfenstein game.

19 - Gears of War 2 ENHANCED!!! - (XB1) - Completed 4/19/18
Got my Xbox One X in yesterday. What better way to break in a 4k gaming system than with a 10 year old 720p game.

20 - God of War - (PS4) - Completed 4/29/18
Simply put, this is why I own a PS4.

21 - Gears of War 3 ENHANCED!! - (XB1) - Completed 5/1/18
Man this game looks gorgeous on the X. I've seen current gen games that look worse than this.

22 - Gears of War 4 ENHANCED!! - (XB1) - Completed 5/6/18
As powerful as the Xbox One X is, it's no match for my PC. 1080p 60fps looks really good for a console, but 1440p 144hz trounces all over it.

23 - Rise of the Tomb Raider - (PC) - Completed 5/20/18
Even better than last time with my new hardware (7700k and Gsync)

24 - Tomb Raider 2013- (PC) - Completed 5/27/18
Still fun to play through.

25 - Resident Evil 7 - (PC) - Completed 6/2/18
Hi future me looking back at this list!

26 - Destiny 2 - (PC) - Completed 6/7/18
Surprisingly I actually enjoyed this campaign. I got it as part of a humble bundle. Easily worth the money I paid.

27 - World of Warcraft Legion - (PC) - Completed 6/14/18
Major milestone as I just bought a Lightforged Warframe. I have no idea how many hundreds of hours it took to get it. I'm proud of this one.

28 - The Last of Us Left Behind - (PS4) - Completed 6/14/18
This was my E3 game. The one that I was playing to get me back into The Last of Us. I've played the base game so many times, but I've only played the DLC a handful. I remember getting a digital version of the PS4 game years ago. Might be one of my best sub $20 purchases in my lifetime. Future me, who is reading this after just finishing The Last of Us Part 2... I hope you loved that game as much as you did the original game.

29 - Doom - (PC) - Completed 6/17/18
So god damn satisfying.

30 - RE4 Separate Ways and Assignment Ada - (PC) - Completed 6/17/18
Had Separate Ways almost done a long time ago. Never bothered to finish it. Figured I might as well do Assignment Ada after finishing that. Got the typewriter unlocked in both modes. Now just need the money.

31 - Resident Evil HD Remaster - (PC) - Completed 6/30/18
Just picked this up on Steam last week, and I'm already finished. Really quick turnaround time for me. This was really fun... with a guide. I don't know how long it would have taken me without any assistance from a guide. Some of the puzzles and clues are so obtuse. On the other hand, I did manage to save both Barry and Chris. I've played through this game, I believe, three times. The is the first time I've saved both of them.
June was a solid month for me. This year has definitely been PC dominant. I'm still looking to pick up a few more games on the Steam sale before it ends. I think I'm out of Resident Evil games to buy, at least until next year.

32 - The Evil Within - (PC) - Completed 7/8/18
Some of the later level insta death sections kinda suck, but otherwise I still enjoy this game.

33 - The Evil Within 2 - (PC) - Completed 7/15/18
Couldn't finish one without the other. I prefer the original game, but this is still an excellent game. I'm curious what they'll do with TEW3, assuming they make one.

34 - Singularity - (PC) - Completed 7/20/18
Pretty standard FPS. That's something I like though. Wish it had better controller support, because sometimes I like to be lazy and use a controller on PC.

35 - Gears of War Judgement- (XB1) - Completed 7/22/18
Woohoo level 50!! All from single player campaign.

36 - Gears of War Ultimate- (XB1) - Completed 7/29/18
Maybe next time I play through the series I'll play the original original Gears of War.

37 - Diablo 3 - (PC) - Completed 8/5/18
Completed the campaign with a demon hunter. Really fun actually. A lot more movement than the other characters I've finished the game with.

38 - Vanquish - (PC) - Completed 8/19/18
Just for fun. Not sure what to play next...

39 - World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth - (PC) - Completed 9/3/18
Got my demon hunter to 120.

40 - Bioshock Remastered - (PC) - Completed 9/3/18
Still a fun game after all these years.

41 - Shadow of the Tomb Raider - (PC) - Completed 9/17/18
Good game, but I like the other, recent, Tomb Raiders better.

42 - Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - (PS4) - Completed 9/23/18
I had so much fun with this. This is one of my most replayed games of all time, but I also haven't played it for close to two years. I remembered about 90% perfectly, but that 10% was wonderful to rediscover. I should give my replays more room in the future. Otherwise they can feel like a chore.

43 - Bioshock Infinite - (PC) - Completed 9/29/18
Got a new mouse, so I had an excuse to replay this :) (for reference, future Duxxy, it's the EC2-A)

44 - World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth - (PC) - Completed 10/6/18
All revered reputation in my demon hunter.

45 - Dead Space 2 - (PC) - Completed 10/7/18
Note to self - stop using the Steam version of the Dead Space games. The origin ones have nice little perks.

46 - Resident Evil 7 - (PC) - Completed 10/20/18
I finally did it. I finally finished the game in under 4 hours. Finally unlocked the damn circular saw.

47 - The Evil Within 2 - (PC) - Completed 10/25/18
Obviously doing the Halloween horror thing this month. Also, I exchanged my gsync monitor for a newer one and most of the banding is gone.

48 - Dead Space - (PC) - Completed 10/28/18
New game plus is nice, but it can also make a game less interesting because you're not playing the game like the developer intended. The last few games on this list were new game plus. And they were all easy as hell. That's not to say that new game Dead Space is hard, but at least it was more interesting than god mode play throughs. So I'll try to stay away from new game plus replays as often in the future.

49 - Alan Wake - (PC) - Completed 11/7/18
Apparently it's been longer than I thought since I played this. I forgot nearly all of it. The graphics are showing their age a bit finally.

50 - Resident Evil 4 - (PC) - Completed 11/20/18
Believe it or not, this was only the second time finishing this game. I got the typewriter machine gun, so the second half of the game was super easy.

51 - Diablo 3 - (PC) - Completed 11/25/18
Completed campaign with the mage. Aside from high level crusader, this might be the most overpowered class in the game. Not Even sure about that exception either.

52 - Grand Theft Auto V- (PC) - Completed 11/27/18
And that's that. Game number 52. This year was a struggle because there were so few new games that I was interested in. Had to go into my backlog and also play previously played games. I played a good amount of Warcraft and Diablo 3 as well. 2019 looks to be a lot better for my tastes. Overall though, this was still a good year of gaming for me

53 - Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon - (Switch) - Completed 12/3/18
Been a long time since I finished a Castlevania game. My own preference is for metroidvania's, but I did finish a Castlevania game or two when I was a kid. I did play on easy mode, because honestly I would not have played the game otherwise.

54 - Spider-Man - (PS4) - Completed 12/7/18
Oh wow. Wow wow wow. I generally love Insomniac games, but this was truly special. I played this on the easiest difficulty possible, and even then the game was still fairly hard. At least the combat end of it. But I never got the point where I wanted to quit. The game was just too good to quit on.
I don't know if I have this or God of War at the top of my GOTY. They're both so good. If I had to guess, I would say that Spider-Man will be it for me. But we'll see in the upcoming weeks and months.

55 - Gears of War 2 - (XB1) - Completed 12/16/18
Long delay between finishing ultimate and 2. I'll start 3 at the beginning of 2019.

56 - Call of Duty Infinite Warfare - (PS4) - Completed 12/23/18
I think, with the fall of Kevin Spacey and how that effected my opinion of Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare is by far and away my favorite COD campaign of this generation. I know there's no chance we'll ever see another IW game, but I have my hopes up for the next Infinity Ward game coming out next year. Future me... how is it?

Reserving here.

I've decided not to buy any games in 2018, and focus on my backlog this year. Too many good games I've overlooked as a result of frequent purchasing. Do most people count mobile games for these threads?

Currently playing:
1. Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (PC)
2. Borderlands (PC)
3. Finding Paradise (PC)
4. Starbound (PC)
5. The Sea Will Claim Everything (PC)
6. BioShock Remastered (PC)
7. Infinity Blade (iOS)
8. Sproggiwood (iOS)

Completed: 0/52

1) Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus - Amazing game, probably my favorite video game story in at least 5 years.
2) The Evil Within 2 - Great RE4 style game, one of the few games recently that I actually wish were a bit longer.
3) Life is Strange: Before the Storm - Loved the original but I wasn't super excited for this because I'm usually not into prequels and losing the rewind mechanic seemed bad. The story between Chloe and Rachel was so good that it almost made me wish the original didn't exist.
4) Mega Man 3 - Picked up the 2nd Mega Man Collection and realized that I still hadn't gone through and beaten all of the games from the first collection. Mega Man 3 is still awesome.
5) Mega Man 4 - Not as good as MM3 but still holds up pretty well.
6) Mega Man 5 - Way easier than the previous couple of Mega Man games. Barely had to use any E tanks at all.
7) Mega Man 6 - I can't believe it took until Mega Man 6 for them to let you fill your secondary weapons back up without switching to them. Such a huge quality of life update.
8) The Turing Test - Cool little puzzle game, story was kinda cliche but I had a good time with it overall.
9) SUPERHOT - Another cool short game, fun enough that I want to go back and engage in the post game content.
10) Doki Doki Literature Club - Not as mind blowing as I was lead to believe...took too long to get to the tripod stuff and then it didn't last long enough once it did.
11) Everybody's Golf - Beat the single player mode over ~50 hours. Fun game but single player tournaments were very repetitive and didn't have a large variety of courses.
12) God of War 4 - Incredible game, reminds me of the Tomb Raider reboot as far as upgrade in game quality. I have the urge to go through and 100% it which is something that rarely happens for me at this point.
13) Cuphead - Most fun I've had in co-op with friends since Gears of War 3. Awesome game.
14) Spider-Man - Great game, amazing storytelling but I wish the combat was better. It feels like Batman but less precise which really impacted my ability to enjoy it. Beat the game on normal and I'm turning down the combat difficulty to get the 100%
15) Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Fun game but the main campaign felt shorter than the other two recent TR games. Amazing looking on Xbox One X.

Currently playing: Horizon: Zero Dawn, Tales of Hearts R, Talos Principle, Steins Gate, Hitman Complete 1st season, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Danganronpa V3

Upcoming: Dishonored 2

Back again! Thanks again to VisceralBowl for running the previous challenge threads, and Wozzer for doing it again this year. Will I make it five years in a row? Probably not, based on how 2017 went lol no, but I'll give it the ol' college try nonetheless.
2017: full list, wrap-up

COMPLETED
1. Gorogoa (PC, 2017) - 0:44 (0:31 in 2017) - COMPLETED January 1
An intricate puzzle game that sometimes feels like an interactive art piece. (full post)

2. Lone Echo (PC VR, 2017) - 7:16 - COMPLETED January 7
A great showpiece for VR that also manages to be a good game, full stop. (full post)

3. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch, 2017) - 70:45 (+12:12 in 2017) - COMPLETED March 7
A gigantic, sprawling mess of a game that is at turns lovable and annoying. (full post)

4. Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings (PS4, 2018) - 65:05 - COMPLETED April 29
It's back to basics after the ambitious but flawed Atelier Firis, and for the most part Lydie & Suelle is a satisfying way to finish the Mysterious trilogy. (full post)

5. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (PS4, 2018) - 48:10 - COMPLETED May 15
Goodbye, Kazama Kiryu. Life won't be the same without you. (full post)

6. Regency Solitaire (PC, 2015) - 9:54 - COMPLETED July 22
Not really a solitaire game for me. It feels too grindy and you don't get the euphoria from making a particularly good chain because the card layouts feel like they fight you every step of the way. (full post)

7. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, 2016) - 9:59 - COMPLETED September 11
It's fine. The campaign strikes a good balance between throwing in new systems and keeping the mission creep to a minimum. It does feel a bit like everything's on rails, though--nothing about the war seems particularly tough, so you never get the sense that SetDef is one battle away from obliterating Earth forever. So yeah, it's fine.

8. Forza Horizon 4 (PC, 2018) - 115:38 and counting - CONTINUING October 25
It's a Horizon festival that truly never, ever, ever, ever ends, so I'm drawing a line under it now. Still reasonably fun, and the whole game-as-a-service thing Horizon 4's pushing actually works decently. And finally, for the first time seemingly ever for a Forza game, the PC port is mostly trouble-free! No horrendous performance issues, very very few random crashes, and overall a pleasant experience.

9. Donut County (PC, 2018) - 1:45 - COMPLETED December 27
Finally getting around to some cleanup of games I've let linger too long. Donut County's biggest problem is that too much of it feels like you're on auto-pilot, but the charm of the whole affair makes up for it somewhat. A couple of laugh-out-loud moments go a long way.

CURRENTLY PLAYING
Detective Pikachu (3DS, 2018) - 6:29
Valkyria Chronicles 4 (PC, 2018) - 34:35
Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee! (Switch, 2018) - 24:28
Fallout 76 (PC, 2018) - 66:34
Sokobond (PC, 2014) - 0:45
Slay the Spire (PC Early Access, 2018) - 3:08

RETIRED
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone (PS4, 2017) - 1:23 in 2017
Gran Turismo Sport (PS4, 2017) - 4:37 in 2017
Captain Forever Remix (PC, 2016) - 5:46 in 2017
Solitairica (PC, 2017) - 13:10 (+0:49 in 2017)
Rock Band VR (PC VR, 2017) - 0:29 in 2017
Tales of Zestiria (PC, 2015) - 1:14
Quantum Conundrum (PC, 2012) - 1:26
Quadrilateral Cowboy (PC, 2015) - 0:31

Detroit: Become Human (PS4, 2018) - 1:57
Overload (PC, 2018) - 9:45

I've been able to accomplish this for the last 4 or 5 years. But I also joined the 50 books 50 movies this year so it may actually be a challenge. But I'm down to give it another go.

★★★★★

Currently playing Horizon Zero Dawn.

1. Gravity Rush 2 60 hours ★★★★
Pretty damn great sequel but not as good as the original. Almost though. If it wasn't for the terrible stealth sections, it might be.

Gonna do this.
I usually track what I play but I never set a limit or goal.

1. Super Mario World: it's my New Years game. I tend to play it every year as a refresher for many reasons. It remains a classic game, Mario or not, and it's just still a joy to play since the first time.
Currently in the second world.

2. Donkey Kong Country 2: started it up and my chika picked up the controller and we didn't stop taking turns for a few hours. I know after this New Years shindig we're at, she's gonna say " let's play!!"

Super excited to do this this year. Got a few games I have planned to play but other than that I'm going in with a clean slate

1. Emily is Away (PC) (31 Minutes) (2/5)
Review:
My free game every year, always a nice story with the cool idea of it being an AOL messaging game.

2. Emily is Away Too (PC) (2 Hours) (3/5)
Review:
I bought this expecting another short sequel but this game is way better compared to the first. It's longer, with two girls to talk to, more immersive with fake YouTube and Facebook sites and much more I won't spoil. A way more interesting story and it genuinely made me feel bad. But it's still too similar to the first to warrant a bigger score

3. Doki Doki Literature Club (PC) (5 Hours) (4/5)

4. Portal (PC) (1 Hours, 13 Minutes) (3/5)

Been doing this since it's origins on GAF, back again.

First game of the year is Xenogears. PS1. Kind of cheating, but I'm counting it. Finished it on new years day even if I was over 80 hours in, lol.

#2 Xenosaga Episode I, ps2.
34 hours.
As great as ever, but man I'm never gonna hit the target if I play a bunch of jrpgs.
Still, I forgot how weird the first game's style was.

#3. Dragonbal Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch
A great port, Ran well for me, I played entirely portable though so the lower resolution wasn't super noticeable. I kinda want to try out the motion controls but this was a game I found myself playing away from home exclusively. Lots of fun though.

4. Titanfall 2, PS4.
Finished the main campaign, so good. It's criminal that respawn are going to be part of the EA machine and never get to make something so full again.

5. Silent Hill 4 The Room, Xbox
One of the less appreciated but one of my favorite horror games. It's still so foreboding and claustrophobic. And damn the Xbox still looks great

6. VS Super Mario Bros, Switch
Fun way to replay the original SMB, sort of. There are level differences, it feels slippier, and fewer power ups, but a lot of fun.

Only planning on buying a few games this year and really concentrating on my backlog. Wish me luck.

Completed

1. The Sexy Brutale (PS4) 01.01.2018
Really cool puzzle game, with an awesome premise. Quite dark and the ending caught me by surprise.

2. Squareboy vs. Bullies
Terrible game all around. Controls are horrible, extremely repetitive, boring enemies, extremely easy and the list goes on. Bought it on sale because it was an easy platinum. Not good at all.

Currently Playing
Assassins Creed: Origins

1. Gorogoa (PC, 2017) - 0:44 + 0:31 in 2017
Completed all chapters.

Gorogoa has a story, technically, but I'm not sure I wrapped my head around all of it the first go-around. This is a bit of a shame, but Gorogoa is such a good-looking and inventive puzzle game that I got a lot of joy just out of tinkering with all the puzzles. It's hard to really explain how Gorogoa works; there's a lot of zooming and moving around of picture tiles mechanically, but how that all works feels like a sort of dream logic you kind of just have to see to understand. In every picture lies some hidden mechanism--perhaps a key to unlock another tile, or a window to reframe an image into something new. As a puzzle game, Gorogoa isn't about overwhelming the player with difficult problems, but rather about the joys of discovery. Though the game is short, it's obviously very well crafted both mechanically and artistically. If you're looking for something that at times feels as much like an interactive art piece as it does a puzzle game, Gorogoa is easy to recommend.

Completed

  1. Catherine (Xbox 360) 1/3/2018 When I got to the late game, I've regretted a lot for picking normal in the beginning but after myriads of deaths, I've finally cleared the game. It was a enjoyable ride, but I don't think I'll get Full Body. 7
  2. Danganronpa V3 : Killing Harmony (PS4) 1/9/2018 After disappointing 3 anime, the V3 delivered. I enjoyed every minute of the game, except rather tedious prologue. While I disliked few members of the cast, overall I liked them as a whole. Interested to see where the series will go from now. 8.5
  3. Chaos Child (PS VIta) 1/22/2018 Hands down the best Science ADV game I've played. Really dug how Takuru grow as a person throughout the story, and where he ultimately landed. Heroines were not just cute girls like I initially thought, which was another plus. While some of the gory scenes were bit too much for my taste, it was still awesome ride. 8.5
  4. YS VIII Lacrimosa of Dana (PS4) 1/26/2018 - Solid Jrpg with great cast and spectacular OST. 9
  5. Shin Megami Tensei IV (3ds) 2/14/2018 - The best 3ds JRPG I've ever played. Loved overall dark tone of the game, and OST was amazing. One small gripe I have about the game is how forgettable the characters are. 9
  6. Celeste (NSW) 2/15/2018 - One of the hardest platformers I've ever played but dang it was fun. Loved the story and the characters. 8
  7. Shadow of the Colossus (PS4) - 3/2/2018 - While improved controls still felt stiff, and navigating around the map was tiresome, Shadow of the Colossus was still a fantastic experience. The sensation I felt when I finally conquered colossus is the experience that can't be topped very easily. The ending itself was great like Last Guardian. 8
  8. Divinity Original Sins II (PC) - 3/8/2018 - When I first started playing the game, all the mechanics and dialogues/lore felt too much for me and I wasn't able to enjoy the game at all. However, the more I got used to them, the greater the game became. I loved how the amount of freedom players are granted with are limitless, and you can approach the game in any angle. Playing through the entire game co-op with my friend was also fabulous. Now that I am done with my first play through, I'm ready to hop in for yet another campaign. 9.5
  9. A Way Out (PC) - 3/25/2018 - When I first saw A Way Out for the first time back in E3, I wasn't really sold on the concept of entirely co-op game. But then, "Fuxx the Oscars" at The Game Awards and my interest towards the game peaked. A Way Out is a very short game, but in that short amount of period, the game constantly presents players with surprises. The two characters that felt generic in the beginning eventually grew on me, and by the time the credits rolled, I felt overwhelmed after all the journey I had went through. However, the game still isn't perfect. I had experienced some glitches playing the game, where my frame rate suddenly tanked or I just couldn't move my character. The game lenght being around 5~6 hours is bad too, especially since the game loses its charm after first play through. 7.5
  10. Kirby Star Allies (NSW) -3/30/2018 - It's Kirby! 8
  11. Shin Megami Tensei : Persona (PSP) 4/8/2018 - Having only played modern Persona game, Persona 1 had lot of surprises from dark grittier settings and tones to gried-based combat. While not everything works well in this ambitious first entry, there's definitely undeniable charm in this game. 8.5
  12. Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology (3ds) 4/21/2018- While the combat nor the story of the Radiant Histroia is all that best, the game's unique premise of time traveling, and distinct characters made me enjoy the game throughout. 9
  13. Trace Memory (ds) 4/28/2018 - While the game is tad bit short, it was packed with constant mysteries to unravel and interesting puzzles throughout that made the game perfect to pick up and clear game. While the ending was tad bit disappointing, I loved the game. 9
  14. Kamiko (NSW) May/2018 - A rather shallow experience that's quite enjoyable. Well worth the price I paid for. 7
  15. God of War (PS4) May/2018 - There are many things I dislike about God of War, from dumb puzzles, to repeated enemies, to the uncomfortable camera angle and rather bland Kratos. However despite all the problems, I enjoyed my journey throughout, and was invested in the relationship between Kratos and Atreus. Also, the combat was pretty fun. 8
  16. Fragile Dreams (Wii) June/2018 - The control is one of the jankiest I've ever faced with, and I wasn't particularly fond with vulnerable weapon systems. However, despite all the janks, the game surely had charm, and it was surely one of the most memorable game I've played through recently. 9
  17. Icey (NSW) June/2018 - A fun game. Nothing much to say besides that. 8
  18. Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (PS4) June/2018 - The control feels terrible throughout the game, especially platforming parts, but the game itself is packed with charm. Definitely not amongst the best JRPGs I've played, but it was a memorable one for sure. 8
  19. Yu-No : girl who chants love at the bound of this world (PS4) June/2018 - The inherent nature of this game is what I dislike the most, but I'd be lying if I say I didn't tear up during some parts of the games. 8
  20. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (NSW) 7/1/2018 - Dark Souls of platformers. Also dixie is cool. 8.5
  21. Bloodstained Curse of the Moon (NSW) 7/5/2018 - Little short, but enjoyable experience. 8
  22. Chrono Trigger (ds) 7/7/2018 - While I didn't like this game as much as others, it was still a thrilling ride from start to finish. 9
  23. Trails in the Sky FC EVO (PS Vita) 7/28/2018 - Great JRPG with everything that makes a good jrpg, from music to cast to story to combat. One of my favorite games I've played in recent years. 9.5
  24. Famicom Tantei Club Pt 2 (SFC) 8/18/2018 - As a fan of Japanese murder mystery, Tantei Club was a blast. Shame that two other games didn't receive fan translation, and the series hasn't been continued since decades ago. Fingers crossed for it to return one day. 9
  25. Liar Princess and the Blind Prince (NSW) 8/25/2018 - Short but memorable game. Visuals were simply stunning, and the story and characters were good. Tho some frame rate drops here and there, overall bland music didn't really impress me in the end. Platforming itself was very easy overall as well. 8
  26. Trails in the Sky SC EVO (PS Vita) 9/1/2018 - A great sequel to the already great game. The added battle mechanics made the gameplay even more engaging, and experiencing its grand story finally unfolding was awesome. 9.5
  27. 428 Shibuya Scramble (PS4) 9/8/2018 - One of the greats. 10
  28. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Torna the Golden Country - While there were moments where I felt annoyed with the game just like the original Xenoblade Chronicles 2, in the end the game won me over. Another fascinating experience from Monolith Soft. 9.5
  29. Marvel's Spider-man(PS4) 9/19/2018 - While I found the "openworld" activities and stealth part of the game unbearable, I enjoyed the game overall. 8

Completed:

1. Nioh: Complete Edition | PC
(7.5/10) - 1.12.18

What better way to start out the year than by clearing out my 2017 backlog? Nioh lured me in with its first trailer and lost me with its first demo. Though I'd heard better impressions of later betas, I decided to wait to dive into what some have claimed the superior to Dark Souls. While I'll admit that combat is nearly as good as its inspiration, Nioh's lack of enemy variety and unique loot make it feel repetitive and grindy. Sub-missions bring out the worst in the game, re-using maps over and over and over again. This monotony is broken by an excellent selection of bosses from human to yokai and everything in-between.

2. God of War | PS Vita (6.5/10) - 1.21.18

The original God of War sets the stage for a trilogy that takes Kratos from a lowly warrior to a fearsome god-killer to the apocalypse itself. It's a shame, then, that it falls short of its own lofty ambitions. Scenes intended to humanize Kratos fall short of redemption and his moments of rage are almost laughably hammy. Once you accept that the game isn't quite as awesome as you remember, it's an enjoyable ride filled with sometimes-frustrating puzzles and hack-and-slash combat that holds up surprisingly well.

3. Day of the Tentacle Remastered | PS4 (6.0/10) - 1.23.18

A pretty fun afternoon of gaming with my girlfriend, all things considered. I think the social aspect made it a little more interesting to me, and my girlfriend was happy to talk about all the little things they'd changed in the NES port. The humor is cheesy and at times painfully 90's; a weird mix of potty jokes and juvenile humor with darker and more grotesque humor (didn't think watching a hamster get microwaved would happen outside of a South Park game!). We looked up a guide to beat the plat in a few hours and as much as it might have been fun to stumble across some of the solutions, others seemed like more effort than they were worth. Overall pretty fun and I think the game just avoids overstaying its welcome.

4. God of War II | PS Vita (7.0/10) - 2.8.18

An upgrade from the original title in nearly every way. The enemies are better designed, there's more variance in puzzles and challenges, and God of War II has a sense of scale that utterly dwarfs its predecessor. The final scenes are especially memorable, even if the game ends on a brutal cliffhanger. However, many of the puzzles are downright frustrating and there was more than one too many "pull this object three inches, fight these dudes, pull this object another three inches, fight more dudes" sequences. The two years between God of War and its successor really put the advancement of CGI in the mid-to-late 2000's into perspective.

5. Monster Hunter: World | PS4 (9.0/10) - 2.11.18

This is a series I've been wanting to get into for years, and what better way to start than Monster Hunter: World? This was my most anticipated game for early 2018 and I think it'll be a strong contender for Game of the Year. Of course there are still flaws: I don't need to explain anymore how lackluster the story is or how little development each character gets. But more importantly, some of the monsters are just infuriating. Zorah Magdaros is wholly uninteresting and fails to play to any of the game's strengths, while at least half of the Elder Dragons are more irritating than they are difficult. Still, Monster Hunter: World is superb when it's at its best and an absolute joy to play with friends. I have a feeling I'll end up coming back to it every so often for events, new monsters, and shenanigans with friends.

6. God of War III Remastered | PS4 (8.0/10) - 2.19.18

While its predecessors evoked a powerful sense of scale through clever use of camera angles and quick-time events alone, God of War III pushes the series to the next level. The enemies, powers, and puzzles are some of the best in the series and unlike the other two mainline games, it knows how to pace them out. Spending the majority of the first two games in their respective dungeons (or meandering about the Underworld) felt like a missed opportunity given the world it's based on, and I was glad to see more varied locations in God of War III. That being said, it felt strange hopping back and forth between the very lowest and highest parts of the world, and I think it missed the mark in some ways. The story feels more meaningful than previous entries and the world's slow descent into chaos perfectly matches with the self-destructive nature of Kratos's journey, and I think it leads the way for a potent follow-up in April.

7. God of War: Chains of Olympus | PS3 (6.5/10) - 2.23.18

Going back to the handheld games was a hard pill to swallow, but the conveniences of the second game are welcome additions. Chains of Olympus struggles most in carving out its own identity but I was surprised at how potent the final scenes turned out to be and appreciated the context behind the rage of Kratos. Better than I expected if only because they ditched some of the more annoying features of the first two (the balance beam tease near the beginning got a chuckle out of me).

8. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life | PS4 (8.5/10) - 3.8.18

I had high expectations for Yakuza 6 despite some disappointed fan impressions, but the game mostly lived up to my initial hype. Not sure if I agree with complaints about the battle system, and despite its simplicity, I would put it on part with Yakuza 0 and Kiwami. I miss the implementation of battle styles but it felt like his moveset was a culmination of his previous abilities, only with a kickass heat mode and a less impressive Tiger Drop. The story, while it may meander a bit just after the first couple chapters, was truly impressive. I always forget how likeable the cast is and how fleshed out even minor characters are.

Needed more Majima.

9. Bury Me, My Love | Mobile (7.0/10) - 3.11.18

One of the first mobile games I've played to completion, Bury Me, My Love is an excellent example of a game that knows how to use the platform it's on. The whole story is told through text messages and plays out in real-time, meaning you have to wait to hear back from Nour after she faces every challenge that comes her way. It's a small sampling of the feelings someone might have in the main character's position, from fear of losing a loved one to the frustration of knowing how little you can help. Few games tackle issues like the refugee crisis so honestly and without allegory. My only big gripe with the game is that the ending I got was anti-climactic and a little frustrating; I know I could go back and change that last decision, but part of me believes that her ending, no matter how unfortunate, is the truest to the way I played.

10. God of War: Ghost of Sparta | PS3 (7.5/10) - 3.13.18

After hearing a great deal about Ghost of Sparta, I was curious to see how the game would manage to surpass its handheld predecessor, Chains of Olympus. And boy did it not disappoint. At first I thought that it was on the same league as God of War II, but upon reflection, I've realized that I think it's the superior of the two. It's ambitious in ways I didn't expect, and feels necessary in explaining his actions by God of War III. It also avoids some of the more annoying puzzles of the original and II, and is surprisingly cinematic for the system it was originally on. The pacing near the end is atrocious, though. While I enjoyed seeing Kratos fight shoulder-to-shoulder with his brother, they gave the two absolutely no time to breathe. The mechanics of the final boss give me some hope for the new God of War, however, because on a surface level Atreus seems like a straight improvement from the concept of Deimos.

11. Metal Gear | PS3 (3.0/10) - 3.21.18

"You should play more retro games!" they said. "It'll be fun!" they said.

While there are some quality of life improvements that games have found over the years, solid game design is timeless. The old arcade classics are still totally playable for a reason. Some genres, however, have suffered from the years. Metal Gear is almost impossibly obtuse, frustrating without being rewarding, and the writing the franchise has come to be known for is completely absent. I wanted to try it first because that's how I've started my other dives into long-running franchises like Kingdom Hearts and God of War, but I quickly regretted that decision. There are some neat ideas present in the game, but they're hardly enough to make up for some truly grating parts of the game. I don't even know how I would've beat this game without a guide holding my hand the whole way.

12. SUPERHOT | PC (6.5/10) - 3.22.18

Got it for free on Twitch Prime and hey, I like free games. The concept is well-executed and there are some neat levels, but I ended up feeling like they could have done more with it. I appreciate the simplicity, however, and felt it was well-complimented by the overarching narrative.

SUPERHOT
is the most innovative shooter I've played in years.

13. Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy | PS3 (6.5/10) - 3.28.18

I continue the trend of finishing games that weren't in my backlog to begin with...

Jak & Daxter is an intensely nostalgic title that brings me back to my days with Ratchet & Clank. It's an almost perfectly paced collectathon, offering plenty of items to search for without feeling oversaturated with collectibles. There are definite issues with its camera and motorcycle controls, though, that start out easy to ignore but become more frustrating as the game ramps up the difficulty. The story and characters quickly began to grate on my nerves, and what I remembered as witty dialogue seemed more juvenile and crass... and not in a good way. Seriously, who thought Daxter would be a fun and likeable sidekick?

Reserved.. I guess 52 games is possible now.

Complete:

1) Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 1 and 2 (NES); 2.1.2018

Fantastic games. While the first game belonged to my childhood, the sequel was a new experience. Tight controls got even better in 2nd game with some gameplay additions + nice graphical upgrades to already good art style. Included them both as one game due to short length and relatively easy difficulty in either game.

2) God of Thunder (PC); 3.1.2018

Good top-down action adventure/puzzle game from early 90's. First episode was overall best but last two weren't as great as I remembered (especially second one). Plus there was one screen in third one where if you saved in wrong spot you had to restart the whole episode, which I thankfully avoided.

3) Goof Troop (SNES); 5.1.2018

Another game that proved 8-bit and 16-bit generation was great time for Capcom. Shame that this one was little too short but loved the way developers did enemy credits. Always joy to play.

4) Doom II (PC); 9.1.2018

Great gameplay that is easy to learn, but I have to say level design got worse in terms of quality around halfway through the game. It is possible to get stuck in many levels due to design/bugs so I had to make a backup save starting from level 14. Not as good as original Doom, but this one does have Super Shotgun.

5) The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC); 21.1.2018

I have had a copy of this for more than 10 years but never got past the Goron-minigames part. Now, well over a decade later I have finally beaten the game and I still do not like that part. Great game with few questionable design choices (final area excluding bosses felt rushed, for example). I might start Oracle of Seasons later in linked game.

6) The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (GBC); 29.1.2018

Couldn't resist temptation to play this immediately. I found Seasons little better than Ages but the final form of final boss drags on a little too long. Anyway, they managed to make two games that connect so well with each other. I wish Seasons had dungeon like Mermaid's from OoA Cave but used different seasons instead of ages.

7) Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons (PC); 5.2.2018

I really wish this trilogy would get a remake with much better jump physics and fixed levels, because it could do third episode some justice. That's where level designers really started to play around with platforming and dodging at the same time. First two episodes were pretty solid, but you could notice third one was rushed a lot.

8) Celeste (PC); 16.2.2018

This game is a masterpiece; a simple interface and lots of great puzzles with the exception of chapter 8 which fell quite flat in terms of design (I raged at that last strawberry so much, but I finally got it). Now to tackle B-side levels which look very interesting. I really wish Celeste gets a sequel, because it deserves one (if not more).

9) Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA); 5.3.2018

Probably my favourite metrdoidvania. Graphics and music are excellent while combat never gets bad thanks to soul system and plenty of souls to play with. Only downsides are that ithe game is little too easy and some soul drops are way too rare and completely dependant on RNG, making soul hunting boring with some enemies. Did not bother getting 100% souls because of that.

10) Adventures of Lolo 3 (NES); 17.3.2018

A brilliant action puzzle game series where pretty much everything has aged well. Only downside of the game (and in other entries) is only one stage music that just keeps looping after around a minute or so. The music can always be muted though. Japanese version has entirely different puzzles so I need to visit it.

11) Adventures of Lolo 2J (NES); 5.4.2018

Think Adventures of Lolo 3 but 90 % rooms much more difficult. I was stumped on 2 rooms and had to consult small hints. They definitely made it a huge challenge with clever solutions. Best entry in whole series.

12) Challenging Lolo 1 (NES); 15.4.2018

I just can't stop playing these games. This is a hack of Lolo 1 with lots of interesting puzzles. Many of the beginning rooms weren't really puzzles but just dodging enemies, so that's a big con. Thankfully it got better later on and 7-2 left me absolutely stumped. Some rooms were little too generous with given shots.

13) Super Win the Game (PC); 28.4.2018

Charming little metroidvania. I liked it so much that I need to try its prequel, You Have to Win the Game. Graphics were nice with references to old games, music was catchy, design was probably meant for all sorts of players so it felt pretty easy.

14) Challenging Lolo 2 (NES); 28.4.2018

I started this after finishing first Challenging Lolo, but got around to finish it now. This game suffers from same problems than first Challenging Lolo. Lots of early puzzles were more about reflexes and speed than actual puzzle-solving and even then the overall quality wasn't as good as in first one, although there were some great puzzles both early and later on that required to think.

15) You Have to Win the Game (PC); 28.4.2018

I really had to play this after Super Win the Game. Much smaller but felt tighter and more challenging. Short game so getting 100% was fairly simple, but it was great experience. I really prefer the graphics in this instead of the sequel.

16) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game (NES); 19.5.2018

Haven't played this for years and I still think it is a masterpiece. Music, graphics, level design, combat, difficulty. Everything is in perfect balance. I actually forgot how awesome Krang's battle theme was.

17) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project (NES); 21.5.2018

Great sequel to but not as good as Turtles 2. Considerably tougher, because of some weird hitboxes. Level design was nice, but lacks some variety and ideas. I liked the new special attacks, though I do miss A+B-combo from Turtles 2.

18) Quake 1 (PC); 24.6.2018

I can't believe I have never played this one. It is an incerdible game. Level design is very good and there's enough variety in enemies with their attacks. Rocket Launcher is the real MVP here in terms of weapons. Normal difficulty was fairly challenging. It is kind of shame that there were only two unique bosses in game.

19) Alwa's Awakening (PC); 9.7.2018

A superb metroidvania which is very well designed. I really wish last area would have had more complex puzzles that fully used all your abilities, so it has a slightly missed potential there. Ending was way too short, but maybe it is a nod to old games with equally nonsense endings, though.

20) Contra 3 (SNES); 15.7.2018

This game is very good game but at the same time insanely hard, even on Normal-difficulty. Last boss was kind of lame to otherwise a fun gauntlet in the last level, because it went to a game of roulette instead. Very unforgiving game, but there is no spot in the game that is impossible to avoid, so it's definitely possible to beat without dying once.

21) Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (SNES); 18.7.2018

Difficulty of this game is 80 % intentionally stiff controls. Jumping has input lag, movement isn't smooth, ladder movement is sluggish, making it very hard to avoid anything in time (therefore needing to adjust before enemy does its attacks). Other 20 % comes when combined with level design having to adjust with controls when it comes to few jumps. Bosses were much less intimidating than their levels and it feels like levels got shorter the further you got. Having to play the same game twice just to get a weapon that was not possible to get during first loop was just not fun. At least you got used to game.

22) Donkey Kong Country (SNES); 21.7.2018

Such a great game that I used to play a lot as a kid. Lots of interesting mechanics, jokes and references. Last boss fight brought a smile to my face.. so perfect. Some levels were quite difficult (4-1 was probably hardest until I actually found the shortcut) but overall not too bad. I need to play DKC 2 at some point as I'm much less familiar with that game.

23) Final Fantasy III (NES); 1.8.2018

First time completing this game I can safely say it is an incredible game. Massive amount of content considering it is a game for NES. Lots of interesting ideas unfortunately not used in later Final Fantasies. Encounter rate is pretty brutal and despite having lots of jobs, only several are really useful. Last part of the game it gets rough, because you need to go through two dungeons without any chance to save, but nothing impossible.

24) The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (GBC); 5.8.2018

Nothing much to say. A classic game full of quality that holds up very well even today in all aspects. Only minus might be overall fairly easy difficulty with no real challenges. Last dungeon required some thinking though. Must-play for everyone.

25) Contra (NES); 7.8.2018

Nice game that keeps on your toes thanks to constantly respawning enemies from off-screen. I had some difficulty with base 2 boss and I still cannot get past snowfield vehicles without dying. Last stage is fairly easy compared to previous two.

26) Super Mario Bros (NES); 9.8.2018

I just love this game and had to play it through at least once since my sister's family was visiting us and we played it fairly often. We never got past 8-3 thanks to Hammer Bros but I found rather reliable way to do it. Starting from current world after game over was a good code from Nintendo to implement. I sometimes wish they included full level select.

27) Gradius (NES); 9.8.2018

Brutal game. I had to use infinite lives to beat it, because some parts are just unpredictable to know beforehand and sometimes impossible to avoid without knowing. Level 6 was cool in terms of design but the boss killed any fun I had left. Last level on the other hand was too random and too much being blindsided. Not going to try second loop.

28) Super Mario Bros 2 (NES); 11.8.2018

Not as easy as I remembered it. Thankfully I saved at the beginning of last boss, because first time around I couldn't get to exit door as the screen stopped moving after the fight, which would have led me to play the entire game all over again.

29) Mario and Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest (SNES); 27.8.2018

This is what Super Mario World should have originally been with the obvious exceptions of music ripped from non-Nintendo games. Perfect balance with little less levels than in original SMW. Such a beautiful game: an unique scenery for almost every level, custom enemies and graphics. Only complaint is for the very last level: the midway checkpoint should be at the end of second area, to make it a less hassle to try out second half if you die as the last boss can be dangerous.

30) Assassin's Creed: Origins (PS4); 17.9.2018

I have mixed feelings for this. Main storyline is as always excellent and the game has an absolutely beautiful world filled with tons of content. However, even on Normal-difficulty, combat is absolutely too easy and stealth is almost overpowered. With the addition of Senu it removed any chances for trailing missions or made sidequests very one-trick-pony in terms of variety. Gameplay is buggy at times, because the climbing is mostly automated and targeting system feels like it is not working properly. Leveling up and the abundant of equipment you could collect did not feel right to have in this game. Smoke/firebombs had no use in this game due to reasons explained above. Overall, a good game presentation-wise with tons of shortcomings in gameplay.

Game 1-Never Stop Sneakin(2017)-Switch-Beaten on January 1
-Overall I enjoyed this game but it really was way to monotonous and way too long. The game is supposed to bring back memories of Metal Gear Solid but it really doesn't, at least for me as MGS is my GOAT. This game has you doing the exact same thing for about 12 hours or so. Same environments, same bosses, same everything, for some reason I kept playing as it was enjoyable but could have been so much better. 7/10

Game 2-Life is Strange Before the Storm Episode 3 Hell is Empty(2017)-PS4-Beaten on January 2
-This was a great conclusion to a great game. Really enjoyed this more than the original. 9/10

Game 3-Call of Duty WWII(2017)-PS4-Beaten on January 12
-Really enjoyed the 5 hour single player campaign. I had been waiting for COD to go back to WWII for a long time and I thought it was great. Hope they keep goin back to WWII e dry couple of years. 9/10

Game 4-Danganronpa V3(2017)-Vita-Beaten on January 15
-I have played and finished the entire series and loved everyone one. This was great but I must say that it is too long in my opinion. 60 hours! About 20 hours too long. 9/10

Game 5-Burly Men at Sea(2017)-Vita-Beaten in January 16
-This was a lovely little point and click adventure game. I played through several endings but after getting the same endings a couple of times, called it quits. 8/10

Game 6-Destiny 2(2017)-PS4-Beaten on January 29
-I really enjoyed the main campaign. While the story was really nothing special, the gunplay is great! I look forward to the Season pass once's it is on sale. 9/10

Game 7-Batman The Enemy Within Episode 4 What Ails You(2018)-Beaten on February 1
-This was my favorite episode of the entire Telltale Batman series. I loved it! Can't wait for the finale! 10/10

Game 8-Planet of the Apes The Last Frontier(2017)-PS4-Beaten on February 10
-I really enjoyed playing this adventure game with my family. It was from Sony's Playlink series that lets you choose decisions using you phone. It wasn't as good as Hidden Agenda but still a good time with a group of people. The animations and transitions were very janky so he graphics weren't great. 7/10

Game 9-Shadow of The Colossus(2018)-PS4-Beaten on February 15
-I played the original on PS2 and the remaster on PS3 but never beat the game until the remake. This game is magical and I just loved it. I do wish it was in 3D like the PS3one. Just a mesmerizing experience and one I will always remember. 10/10

Game 10-Bayonetta(2018)-Switch-Beaten on February 19
-After owning the Xbox 360and WiiU version, I finally played and beat Bayonetta and what a ride it was! Great game in the same vein as DMC. Loved it and look forward to the second game soon. 9/10

Game 11-The Last Guardian(2016)-PS4-Beaten on February 23
-After loving the remake of Shadow of the Colossus recently and loving Ico preciously, I decided to play The Last Guardian and have to say that this game is a masterpiece. It is an awe inspiring game. The environments, the music, the lighting, and Trico. My gosh, Trico. Trico could just as well be a real animal. I have never seem anything like it outside of real animals. Masterclass and one of my favorite games of all time. It is the only game that has ever hit me emotionally. I looked at the Metacrotc scores and can't believe quite a few outlets had given it 6 or 7's. There has never been anything like this game. Between Ico, Shaodow of the Colossus and the Last Guardian, Ueda is a true artist and one of the greatest game designers of all time. I sure hope he makes more games in the future as no one makes anything quite like these games. 10/10

Game 12-The Lost Bear(2017)-PSVR-Beaten on February 26
-I loved this charming little sidescrolling platformer. I am a spectator sitting in a theatre but am also controlling the action onscreen. The environment around me changes as the environment in the game changes. It only lasts an hour or so but I loved it! 9/10

Game 13-Bayonetta 2(2018)-Switch-Beaten on March 1
-While I enjoyed this game, I didn't like it as much as th first game which I beat a couple weeks ago. I didn't like the characters as much in this game, Bayonetta's short hair, or the fact that it seemed like a boss rush game. It seemed like it went from boss to boss to boss. Still fun though, 8/10

Game 14-Old Man's Journey(2018)-Switch-Beaten on March 2
-This was a short and very relaxing puzzle adventure game that was a nice game to play after Bayonetta 2. 8/10

Game 15-A Normal Lost Phone(2018)-Switch-Beaten on March 3
-I really enjoyed this visual novel as it was a very unique experience. I really enjoy these brief, inexpensive adventure games in between the bigger games. 10/10

Game 16-Moss(2018)-PSVR-Beaten on March 5
-I absolutely adored this game and is one of my favorite VR games I have played. I really want more games from this perspective as I get no motion sickness from playing whatsoever. Just a delight to play and can't wait for Book 2.10/10

Game 17-Theseus(2017)-PSVR-Beaten on March 6
-I know this game didn't get good reviews but I really enjoyed it for the $10 I spent on it. It was a third person action game where I am looking down from where the camera would be viewing the acting. After playing this and Moss, I really like perspective in VR because I don't get motion sickness. I wish it was longer and that's the only negative thing to say about it. 8/10

Game 18-Life is Strange Before the Storm-Bonus Episode Farewell(2018)-PS4-Beaten on March 8
-I thought this was a very slow episode even though it was only an hour long. It was just boring. It had a powerful ending though. The ending brings it up a lot. 7/10

Game 19-Florence(2018)-iOS-Beaten on March 8
-This was the first iOS game I have ever finished to completion. It helped that it was only an hour or so. It was a nice little adventure/puzzle game that was very chill and relaxing. 8/10

Game 20-The Inpatient(2018)-PSVR-Beaten on March 10
-I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It was ok. The graphics weren't great and moving was so slow in the game. Maybe it's why I didn't get motion sickness so I shouldn't complain too much. The game also got extremely dark the last third of the game. 6/10

Game 21-Layers of Fear(2018)-Switch-Beaten on March 10
-This game started out very slowly but then picked up and I ended up enjoying this horror game. Nothing too great but it had some jump scares and creepy music to keep me on the edge of my seat. 7/10

Game 22-Layers of Fear Inheritance DLC(2018)-Switch-Beaten on March 11
-This was the DLC for Layers if Fear and it was an interesting look at what happened in the game from the daughters perspective. Plays the same as the original game which is good. 7/10

Game 23-The Lego Movie Videogame(2014)-Vita-Beaten on March 19
-Every so often I like to play a Lego game as they are generally pretty short, easy games and are just fun. There is something about collecting all those legos that just doesn't get old. 7/10

Game 24-Metal Slug 3(2015)-Vita-Beaten on March 22
-This game was originally released for the Neo Geo back in 2000. I enjoyed the game but it was very hard which makes sense for an arcade game. Luckily it has unlimited continues so I eventually beat the game. There is some slowdown but that didn't bother me much and it is only about 90 minutes long. 7/10

Game 25-BioShock 2 from the BioShock Collection(2016)-Xbox One-Beaten on March 29
-I had previously beaten BioShock and BioShock Infinite and enjoyed both of those games. I finally got around to BioShock 2 and I enjoyed it about the same. I have always thought that the gunplay in this series was weak and this game made me think no different. I could tell the graphics were last gen but I still really enjoyed the atmosphere of this game. Now on to Minerva's Den. 8/10

Game 26-Little Red Lie(2018)-Vita-Beaten on March 30
-Half way to 52! To say I enjoyed this visual novel game would not be the right words. It was depressing while I was playing and really the only game to ever make me feel down for quite some time after finishing. I thought it was a though provoking game and one worth experiencing. 9/10

Game 27-BioShock 2-Minerva's Den from the BioShock Collection(2016)-Xbox One-Beaten on March 30
-This was more of BioShock 2. I know it gets great ratings but I didn't like it any more or less that the main game. 8/10

Game 28-Batman the Enemy Within Episode 5 Same Stitch(2018)-PS4-Beaten on March 31
-Good finale to a good series. These Telltale Batman games have been my favorite of all the games Telltale has made. This final episode tied up all the stories but left the door open for more Joker in the future. I look forward to it! 9/10

Game 29-Reverie(2018)-Vita-Beaten on April 3
-I really enjoyed this Zeldaesque game. It was six hours of exploring and puzzle solving with some decent boss fights. Just a good old time and highly recommended. 9/10

Game 30-Garage(2018)-Switch-Beaten on May 14
-Well it has been a while since I finished a game but this one was awesome! I loved the dark atmosphere and music. I liken this game to a slower paced Hotline Miami with horror elements. Loved it! 9/10

Game 31-Subsurface Circular(2018)-Switch-Beaten on May 27
-This was a short little visual novel that I enjoyed. It wasn't my favorite but still had a decent story and is over in two hours. I am playing Detroit Become Human right now and this has some similar themes. They play nothing like each other though. I think more visual novels should be short like this one. 8/10

Game 32-Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story(2018)-Switch-Beaten on May 29
-This game is relaxing to play with the music playing in the background but the story gets serious and just makes me want to keep searching the phone and reading more and more about what is going on. It's short but I am good with that and hope more games in this series continue to come out. Love them! 10/10

Game 33-London Heist from PSVR Worlds(2016)-PSVR-Beaten on May 29
-I really enjoyed this short game and really look forward to Blood and Truth when it comes out. One of my favorite vr experiences so far. 9/10

Game 34-Quarantine Circular(2018)-PC Via GPD Win-Beaten on June 2
-This was Mike Bithell's follow up to Subsurface Circular. I enjoyed Subsurface more but this was pretty good too. 7/10

Game 35-Emily is Away(2015)-PC Via GPD Win-Beaten on June 3
-I loved this game as someone that remembers the AOL instant messaging days. Such a cool game but I also think it could have been expanded on a lot more. Looking forward to playing the sequal next. 9/10

Game 36-Emily is Away Too(2017)-PC Via GDP Win-Beaten on June 3
-I loved this game even more that the original. It was longer and had you flipping back and forth between conversations on EOL Messenger which made it even more realistic. The only issue is how fast you had to type as there was a timer for some of the conversations. Looking forward to more of these games. 9/10

Game 37-Sara is Missing(2016)-PC Via GDP Win-Beaten on June 4
-I keep seeking out games like this that allow you to search phones and communicate with people to solve, in this case, the fact that Sara is missing. I just can't get enough of these games. They are very addictive! 9/10

Game 38-DFD Chapter 1-PC Via GPD Win-Beaten on June 8

Game 39-Detroit: Become Human(2018)-PS4-Beaten on June 10
-Such a great game. Just dripping with atmosphere. It's a modern day adventure/point and click game and it is so good. David Cage gets a lot of negative press but I have loved every single one of his games and this one is his best yet. 10/10

Game 40-DFD Chapter 2-PC Via GPD Win-Beaten on June 11

Game 41-Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds(2014)-Vita-Beaten on June 19
-A fun, brief beat em up. Nothing special, but good fun for about 2 hours. 7/10

Game 42-The Exorcist: Legion VR(2018)-PSVR-Beaten on June 21
-This cost $6.99 and for that it was good and scary. He issue is that it was about half an hour which is a tad brief. Debating whether I should buy episode 2 or wait for a sale on the season pass. 7/10

Game 43-Doodle Date(2018)-PC via GPD Win-Besten on June 23
-This was a very brief but unique game where I had to draw my date, among other things, and they were then incorporated into the story. It was only about half an hour long and it was ok at best. 6/10

Game 44-Dark Legion(2018)-PSVR-Beaten on June 29
-This was a really enjoyable shooter that was a lot of fun for several hours. For a game that is $10, it comes recommended from me. 7/10

Game 45-No Heroes Allowed VR(2017)-PSVR-Beaten on July 2
-One of my favorite vr games. It was so much fun! I loved the cute graphics, the atmosphere, the gameplay and the characters in the game. It was just so engaging and it is a genre I don't normaly play. VR made all the difference. 10/10

Game 46-Appollo 11 VR Experience(2017)-PSVR-Beaten on July 2
-Not really a game but it was a great experience for me as I love history. There a few gameplay elements but I preferred to just sit back and enjoy the show. 8/10

Game 47-Digital Domain's The Monkey King(2017)-PSVR-Beaten on July 3
-This was another VR experience but one that was very good. It's really wish there were more movies like this made in VR. The weakness was that it was very short and says that more episodes are coming. I will look forward to the next installment. 8/10.

Game 48-Final Fantasy 13(2014)-PC via GDP Win-Beaten on July 7
-Being able to play this on a portable really helped me finally finish his game. I really enjoyed the game even though it gets a lot of negativity thrown it's way. Looking forward to 13-2. 9/10

Game 49-The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit(2018)-PS4-Beaten on July 7
-This is a two hour precursor to Life is Strange 2. It was ok at best. Still looking forward to LoS2 and seeing how his little story fits into it. 6/10

Game 50-Final Fantasy 10 HD(2016)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on July 19
-I am focused on playing and beating the mainline Final Fantasy games in the next couple of years. Another one is completed and I really loved this one. Great music and story and just overall a good time. 9/10

Game51-DFD Chapter 3-PC Via GPD Win-Beaten on July 28

Game 52-DFD Chapter 4-PC Via GPD Win-Beaten on July 28

Game 53-DFD Chapter 5-PC Via GPD Win-Beaten on July 28

Game 54-DFD Chapter 6-PC Via GPD Win-Beaten on July 28

Game 55-FF-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on August 2

Game 56-Final Fantasy X-2(2016)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on August 4
-I did not like this nearly as well as the first game. I didn't like the mission structure at all. It was still a decent game and one that I am glad I played through. 6/10

Game 57-North(2018)-PS Vita-Beaten on August 7
-This was a short little adventure game that was ok. Nothing special but worth the $2.99 I paid for it. 7/10

Game 58-Halo 5 Guardians(2015)-Xbox One-Beaten on August 10
-I finally got around to beating this game and overall I enjoyed the single player campaign. After playing a lot of shooters, it feels like Halo is falling behind in many categories in the shooting genre. Still good though! 8\10

Game 59-Gears of War 4(2016)-Xbox One-Beaten on August 14
-I have loved all the Gears games and this one is no different. It doesn't do anything different and I am ok with that. 8/10

Game 60-The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker(2018)-Switch-Beaten on August 14
-This was an enjoyable FMV game that required me to figure out who killed Dr. Dekker by asking patients a bunch of questions over numerous days. I will look into playing more FMV games as I really enjoyed my time worth it. 8/10

Game 61-The Walking Dead The Telltale Series The Final Season Episode 1: Done Running(2018)-PS4-Beaten in August 15
-A good start to the final season. Quite the ending so am looking forward to episode 2! 8/10

Game 62-Late Shift(2017)-PS4-Beaten on August 15
-I really liked this FMV game. This was well acted and seemed to be made with a much higher budget than any other FMV game I have ever seen. I enjoyed the Dr. Dekker game but this game blew that one out of the water. 10/10

Game 63-Dead Space 3(2013)-Xbox 360-Beaten on August 20
-I finally got around to finishing up this series. This was my least favorite of the three games but I still enjoyed thyebtense atmosphere and game overall. 7/10

Game 63-Halo Reach(2010)-Xbox 360-Beaten on August 25
-Has been on my backlog for way too long and I am glad that I finally got around to beating it. Great game! 9/10

Game 64-Battlefield One(2016)-Xbox One-Beaten on August 27
-I loved the short stories of various people from different fronts. I would love more as overall the campaign was short. Great though! 9/10

Game 65-Dead Space 3 Awakening(2013)-Xbox 360-Beaten on August 29
-This was the dlc campaign and it was good but only about an hour long. 7/10

Game 66-Killer is Dead(2013)-Xbox 360-Beaten on September 1
-This was probably the wierdest and craziest game I have ever played. The story was nonsensical but I kept playing because the swordplay was fun and I loved the art style. 7/10

Game 67-Donut County(2018)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on September 3
-What a fun and relaxing game and was a perfect break from all the serious games I have played lately. It has a Katamari Damacy vibe. 9/10

Game 68-Gears of War Judgement/Aftermath(2013)-Xbox 360-Beaten on September 3
-More Gears gameplay which I love. Fun game! 9/10

Game 69-Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition(2018)-Switch-Beaten on September 26
-I really enjoyed this shortened, condensed version of the game. I look forward to playing the full game sometime in the future. 8/10

Game 70-The Park(2016)-PS4-Beaten on September 29
-Halloween season is upon us and that means my yearly focus on horror games. I really liked this game and would honestly like more movie length horror game experiences like this. At the end, it was kind of like PT in that their is a continuous loop where thing change over time. Good horror experience! 7/10

Game 71-Telltales The Walking Dead The Final Season Episode 2 Suffer the Children(2018)-PS4-Beaten on September 29
-This was a good long episode that may or may not be the last one now that Telltale has all but closed. I enjoyed it and hope that someday this final season will get a chance to finish. 9/10

Game 72-Slender The Arrival(2015)-PS4-Beaten on September 30
-I enjoyed this brief horror game. It wasn't great but perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. 7/10

Game 73-Saya no Uta(2013)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on October 6
-This was a great visual novel to play/read during the Halloween season. It was very interesting and grotesque but not really scary in my opinion. It kept me wanting to keep reading that is for sure. I also liked the fact that it w as the so long, a out five hours or so. I wasn't abuse fan of having words over the entire screen and would prefer to have the words at the very bottom of the screen so it doesn't cover the artwork constantly. Minor gripe. 9/10

Game 74-The Evil Within 2(2017)-PS4-Beaten on October 13
I really liked the original and this one was just as good. The story is a little hard to follow but love the overall atmosphere. Great game for October! 8/10

Game 75-Resident Evil 7(2017)-PS4/PSVR-Beaten on October 24
-I really liked this game and am glad to have finally beaten it. I played part of it in Vr for awhile and I got motion sickness after awhile so I put it off for awhile as I felt that the game needed to be played in VR. I finally gave up that belief and mix d it up between PSVR, PS4 and Vita Remote Play. I liked Evil Within 2 better I think but both great games. Now for the dlc! 8/10

Game 76-Resident Evil 7 Not a Hero(2017)-PS4-Beaten on October 27
-This returned an old series favorite Chris Redfield and it was more action packed than the main game. It was good. 7/10

Game 77-Resident Evil 7 End of Zoe(2017)-PS4-Beaten on October 28
-I really liked this dlc. One of my favorite parts of the game. 9/10

Game 78-Resident Evil 7 Banned Footage 1/2(2017)-PS4-Beaten on October 28
-I played through all the episodes and enjoyed Daughters, Bedroom and 21 the most. 7/10

Game 79-Resident Evil Revelations(2017)-Switch-Beaten on October 30
-I really liked this game and I have played and really liked every game in this series(only Resident Evil 0 left). It was just a good old fashioned ridiculous Resident Evil game which after RE7, was a nice change of pace. 8/10

Game 80-A King's Tale Final Fantasy 15(2016)-Xbox One-Beaten on November 2
-Great little side scrolling beat-em up in the Final Fantasy 15 universe. Had a good time with it for the hour or so it lasted. 8/10

Game 82-Deltarune Chapter One(2018)-PC via GDP Win-Beaten on November 3
-I really enjoyed Undertale so for free, this was an awesome game. Or Demo. Or first Chapter. Not for sure but Indo look forward to more from Toby Fox. 9/10

Game 83-Red Dead Redemption(2010)-Xbox 360-Beaten on November 10
-This is the first Rockstar game I have "beat" and I really enjoyed the wild west setting. The biggest reason I played it is that I wanted to beat it before playing the sequel which I look forward to. I really hope I like the sequel as much as I liked this one. 9/10

Game 84-Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare(2010)-Xbox 360-Beaten on November 13
-I didn't enjoy this as much as the regular game but it was still fun. There were moments I got stuck because I had to do some very specific thing before the next mission popped up which was very annoying. 6/10

Game 85-Transference(2018)-PSVR-Beaten on November 17
-This was a good vr game that messed with your mind. The atmosphere was great but th sounds got annoying after awhile. Luckily the game was about two hours as I think any longer it would have gotten old. I got motion sick 3/4 of the way through so finished it up on my Vita via remote play. VR is the best way to play no doubt, but still good 2D as well. 7/10

Game 86-The Quiet Man(2018)-PS4-Beaten on November 18
-With no sound, was the worst game I have ever played. There is no sound but muffled nothingness. None. Crazy and stupid decision. I'll give it a go now with sound and see if it get up to average. 1/10.

Game 87-The Quiet Man with sound(2018)-PS4-Beaten on November 21
-Who would have thought that a game with sound is better than without? That still isn't saying a whole lot. It is a fmv/beat-em up game and a below average one at that. 4/10

Game 88-Dead Rising 4(2016)-Xbox One-Beaten on November 25
-This game was a fun romp. It took me two years to beat it but I enjoyed it overall. Never get tired of killing zombies. 7/10

Game 89-Zarvot(2018)-Switch-Beaten on December 3
-I really enjoyed my time with this game. It was a fun little shooter that had a surprisingly good story mode. 8/10

Game 90-1979 Revolution Black Friday(2018)-Switch-Beaten on December 3
-I love history. I love video games. The two go very well together and I would love more games like this which are aimed at teaching people. As a teacher, games like this could be used in school. Great experience. 8/10

Game 91-Senran Kagura Reflections(2018)-Switch-Beaten on December 4
-This was not much of a game and was very repetitive and boring. I was hoping it would have more visual novel to it but it didn't. One of the worst games of the year for me. 3/10

Game 92-Minecraft Story Mode Episode 1 The Order of the Stone(2015)-PC via GPD Win- Beaten on December 4
-This was a nice, relaxingfirst episode. It reminded me why I enjoy playing Telltale games so much. It a Minecraft fan but really enjoyed this as it really has nothing to do with Minefcraft the game. Looking forward to the rest of the series. 8/10

Game 93- Minecraft Story Mode Episode 2 Assembly Required(2015)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 5
-I didn't like this episode nearly as much as the first but it was about an hour long so it didn't last long. It was ok and am still looking forward to the next episode. 6/10

Game 94-Kirby Star Allies(2018)-Switch-Beaten on December 8
-This was the first Kirby game I have ever beaten and it was nice, fun little sidescrolling romp. The Switch is perfect for games like this. 8/10

Game 95-Minecraft Story Mode Episode 3 The Last Place You Look-(2015)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 9
-I continue to enjoy this series. Nice episode. 8/10

Game 96-Minecraft Story Mode Episode 4 A Block and a Hard Place(2015)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 10
-This Episode seemed like the end of the story so I'm interested to see where episode 5 goes. This was an action packed episode and the best one of the bunch so far. 9/10

Game 97-Gal Gun 2(2018)-Switch-Beaten on December 11
This game was below average. You stand around and shoot cute, baby, pink, demons that are attacking girls. The story is really basically nothing. Played it because it was short and took up a lot of space on my Switch. 4/10

Game 98-Minecraft Story Mode Episode 5 Order Up(2016)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 13
-This Episode seemed like a self contained story after last episode finished up the bigger story. I'm not sure what to expect on the last three episodes but I am still enjoying the series a lot. 7/10

Game 99-11:45 A Vivid Life-(2018)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 15
-A strange, short, narrative game where you think your skeleton isn't your so you steal a X-ray macine to look at your skeleton. You find some things that don't belong so you cut them out. It is a interesting look at mental disease. Free for PC and you can also play in your browser. Very short though. 7/10

Game 100-Omensight(2018)-Switch-Beaten on December 16
-I knew I would love this game as I loved their previous game Stories Path of Destinies. This game had great atmosphere and voice acting and fun gameplay. There was noticeable slowdown at times and the load times were long and frequent but it still didn't hurt my overall appreciation of this game. I do wish there would be more environments as you do have to go back to the same environments numerous times so there is some repetition. 8/10

Game 101-Minecraft Story Mode Episode 6 A Portal to Mystery(2016)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 16
-I really enjoyed this seeemingly one off murder mystery. It was different from all the other episodes and hope episode 7 and 8 are similar. 9/10

Game 102- Minecraft Story Mode Episode 7 Access Denied(2016)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 19
-This was a short but sweet episode that I once again, enjoyed. While episodes 5-7 seem to be comepletely separate from episodes 1-4, they are still a lighthearted romp. 8/10

Game 103-Minecraft Story Mode Episode 8 A Journey's End(2016)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 20
-This as a decent finale I guess. I can say that I do look forward to season two. 7/10

Game 104-Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 Eposode 1 Hero in Residence(2017)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 21
-I just doubled the 52 game goal! Wow! Well here I am playing season 2 right after finishing season 1. That shows how much I am enjoying this lighthearted series. It is a perfect game to play around Christmas. This episode was probably the weakest of any so far. It was fine but just slow. Well see how it picks up. 6/10

Game 105-Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 Episode 2 Giant Consequences(2017)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 21
-I enjoyed this hour long episode but I'm not liking this season nearly as well as the first one so far. Lets see what happens in the next couple of episodes.

Game 106-Gris(2018)-Switch-Beaten on December 22
-Beautiful game. Both artistically and musically. Stunning. The gameplay was also good. I wish there was a little bit more explained about the story but I think I understand game hits all the cords that Journey did for me. Great game! 9/10

Game 107-Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 Episode 3 Jailhouse Block(2017)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 25
-This was a fun, action packed episode. Looking forward to the next episode. 8/10

Game 108-Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 Episode 4 Below the Bedrock(2017)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 27
-This was a decent eopisdoe and I look forward to seeing how the series wraps up. 7/10

Game 109-Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 Episode 5 Above and Beyond(2017)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 27
-Thisnwas a pretty good ending to a pretty good season. I look at this entire series as a lighthearted, fun time and one that I don't regret playing throughout December. 7/10

Game 110-Shadow of the Tomb Raider(2018)-PS4-Beaten on December 28
-Loved this game and love this series since the reboot in 2013. I might have to go and play the 360/PS3 Tomb Raiders games sometime soon. Great fun! 9/10

Game 111-Nelson Tethers: Puzzle Agent(2010)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 30
-After beating the Minecraft Story Mode games, I decided to look into other Telltale games that I haven't played and Puzzle Agent was one that I decided to play. It was definitely focused on solving mind puzzles which I both enjoyedat times and didn't at others. I liked it good enough that I will be playing the second one soon. 7/10

Game 112-The Haunted Island A Frog Detective Game(2018)-PC via GPD Win-Beaten on December 30
-Hmmm...... Not sure about this one. It gets great reviews and were on numerous people's end of year lists for best games but for me it seemed like a 6th grader wrote it. Very simple graphics and story and over in an hour. I'm not saying it's bad it's just not anything worth remembering. 6/10

Complete!

1: Life Is Strange - Before The Storm (1/1/18, 13 hrs)

I played the first episode prior to the new year, but, didn't have a chance to finish the game proper until the new year. It's highs were higher than LiS, but, it's lows were lower, IMO. I really think it would had benefitted from 4-5 episodes instead of 3, but, it was a solid game I enjoyed to play. It works better, IMO, with thinking it as something more self-contained.

2: The Banner Saga (1/3/18, 10 hrs)

A really enjoyable strategy title, I enjoyed the mechanics of the gameplay, but I had some little niggles about things like classes, or some units feeling really weak in comparison to others. This might just be because it's the first of a series, rather than a standalone game, but, I'd have loved to see some more character development for characters outside the handful that actually got to appear more than twice. There were times I lost people and I didn't even really feel anything about it, because the character had maybe had 2 interactions with everyone. Enjoyed my 10 hours, but not rushing out to get the next installment.

3: The House in Fata Morgana (1/10/18, 31 hrs)

Holy crap. This visual novel has quickly rocketed to one of my favourite gaming experiences. It was so engrossing, I really didn't ever want to put it down (But life made me, alas). I hadn't gone in expecting it to be as long as it had been, and, there were some chapters I felt dragged on (And, a lot of groaning/grunting sound effect text boxes that could have been cut down on). But, all in all, an extremely enchanting and emotional story I am so glad that I experienced.

4. Picross S (1/13/18, 25hrs)

I miss touch controls, but, man do I need Picross like water. Still dislike Mega Picross, but, I deal.

Firewatch-02.png

5. Firewatch (1/14/18, 3hrs)

Hmmm, I'd heard good things but, I dunno. I can't say I enjoyed it that much honestly. The highlight was definitely Delilah's banter. It kinda seemed like the ran out of time developing it.

header.jpg

6. Dragon Age Origins (1/14/18, 63hrs)

I really enjoyed my time with this one, it's one of those games I've been meaning to get around to playing since forever that I never quite got around to, but I wanted a hero to carry on in my Inquisition file. Loved my party members to bits, I loved each of their interactions and banter. Combat felt a little clunky, but, that could just be its age.

7. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (1/20/18, 90hrs)

This game... This game is like, the video game equivalent of hate fucking, to me. A lot about this game pisses me off. The designs, the art style clashes, the undercutting of the main game message, the combat system... There's a lot that merely just annoys me, stabiity/performance issues, having to swap blades for skill checks, merc missions not ticking when in Sleep Mode, gatcha blades. But, there's also a lot I really really loved. Chapters 7-10 were really really good. The main lessons the story wanted to teach I feel are really important for everyone to experience, and I loved the characters it used to teach them (Except Tora). I enjoy affinity charts and merc missions, and shop ownership and development levels. I love it and I hate it, all at once, and I think I need a bit of time to sort that all out before I go back and start grinding for blades and doing their unique quests.

8. FFXIV Patch 4.2 - Rise of a New Sun (2/7/2018, 9hrs)

I'm an avid FFXIV player, so, this has been taking up most of my gameplay time of late. In the hour count, I only counted the plot + the time to run all the new casual stuff for the unlock, not any of the time learning harder content, idling around, levelling, or spending time with my friends. I wasn't sure on if I should include it, but, it has been the game I've been playing the most of late.

9. Picross e8 (2/17/2018 - 22hrs)

I mentioned I fucking loved Picross, right? Well, between Picross e8 and Pictopix on PC, I've had my Picross fix for the last few months while I've been really busy with life. After Pictopix though...I think I'll need a break for a bit. Just hitting critical mass.

header.jpg

10. Pictopix (2/27/2018, 80hrs)

So, this is why I hit picross burn out. Pictopix is super expansive, with 200 puzzles ranging from 5x5 to 40x40, with a number of variants on a few puzzles. My play time is a little inflated, I did puzzles while I waited in FFXIV queues, but, man, well worth the like..$5-6 I paid for it?

11. Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (3/9/18, 35hrs)

So, I did actually own the DS version of this game, and I started it, got through chapter 1, was intrigued ... And then life happened and I forgot about it. I'm so glad they re-released it because this game is an absolute gem. I've spent a stint in hospital this last week and this game has been my companion, and I fell absolutely in love with it. I'm honestly sad I'm finished now, but at 100% completion... There's no more story for me to discover. But the memories will remain!

12. Life Is Strange: Before the Storm - Farewell (3/14/18, 1hr)

It was nice to see Max and Chloe together again, but...I dunno. Something seemed off with Max, like, voice or modelling wise, and I found it really distracting the entire way through. It was really good to watch the pair get to interact once more, though, and I feel like it was a really strong send off for the pair. Though, I think the other ending might have given me more feels, than the one I got, given what happens in the future...

header.jpg

13. Night in the Woods (3/18/18, 7hrs)

I'd heard really good things about this game, and, I'm so glad it was recommended to me so many times, because, the main 4 leads, I absolutely love. When the game shifted gears in later chapters away from the stories of your friends, I have to admit, I was disappointed, and while I liked the -concept- of the ending, I'm not entirely sure I liked the execution. I'd also have liked the chance to get to know Angus better. But, that's probably because I identified with him the most of the cast. Eeeeeeeeeels, Resetera. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeels

header.jpg

14. Orwell: Keeping An Eye On You (3/20/18, 3hrs)

I picked up the latest Humble Bundle for this game, it sounded like a really neat premise. You were an investigator for Orwell, a government program that like the name implies, monitors everything through surveillance in order to stop crime. The game has you tracking down the culprits of a bombing attack, by listening in on their calls, reading in on their text messages, remote accessing their computers and phones... And it's up to you to pick and choose the correct evidence to submit. Had one issue with the game crashing, and, some of the dialogue was a little stilted, but, this was well worth the time and money. I'll pick up the sequel, when they've finished releasing all the episodes.

header.jpg

15. Doki Doki Literature Club (3/21/18, 4hrs)

$&%$#^&*&%$&^$#!!

Man, isn't Monika just dreamy~ I'd look into those eyes forever.

Real talk though, I honestly wish I hadn't known going in about this game. It definitely lessened the impact of the hard hits. But, I also read that some things are RNG based, so, perhaps I got good RNG. Kudos to the character of Sayori, for tackling something really uncommon to games, and in a more realistic way than most.

header.jpg

16. The Confines of the Crown (3/22/18 - 5hrs)

I bought this game a long time ago, expecting a stock standard otome game about a young girl wooing princes above her station and then rescuing her from shenanigans. I did not expect the interesting tale told, dealing with inverted gender roles in the traditional medieval setup (Women are the heirs to the throne, and have the power in relationship forming), gender identity, and routes where you got the guy, and routes where you got the girl instead, and a very intelligent, capable protagonist. You have to go through every route to really get the full scope of the plot and its characters, because as it is in real life, not everyone is told the truth, and not everyone gets exposed to the same points. Not the greatest fan of the sprite artwork, but, the CG work is really pretty. Genuinely surprised me, but, I really loved some of the ideas at play here,

header.jpg

17. What Remains of Edith Finch (3/22/18 - 2hrs)

Man, what a lovely game celebrating life, love, death and family. And just like life, it's funny, it's depressing, it's ironic, and everything in between. If I'm honest, I just wanted to continue exploring that house forever, I'd have loved more and more stories, but, I feel the right choice was made for the game's length. I was honestly feeling pretty surprised it was only 2hrs when I sat down to look at my Steam playtime, as it definitely felt as though I'd been there longer.

header.jpg

18. Secret Little Haven (4/3/18 - 3hrs)

I ran into a few glitches while I played, one which necessitated a game restart, but, this was a really enjoyable few hours. I'm not trans myself, but, I have many friends who are, and, this was a really good look at not only some of the struggles they have had to go through, but the struggles of the generation before me (I was 4 in the time this game was set). I grew up always knowing about trans people, so, Alex's confusion was strange at first, but, I took a step back, and realised, the world I grew up in was very different to the world that Alex and Sammy and Laguna all grew up in.

Getting to help each of your friends just before the final showdown face themselves, and look at what help they needed, and the steps they needed to take, was really nice, and for me, Andy listening, was probably the most cathartic. Andy legitimately terrified me, I was waiting for him to shoot up a school, or shoot Alex, or Cassandra, or just...have that toxic masculinity explode in some other direction outwards and people would be hurt.

Well worth the $5 for everyone to experience, I think. Even if you're not trans, I think many of us can relate to the struggles of Alex, of Jenni, of Sammy, and, stepping into the shoes of a young trans girl finding her way will really help people empathise or bring to light struggles people may not be aware of for trans people.

19. Recettear - An Item Shop's Tale (4/11/18 - 15hrs)

It took me two cycles, but, I did manage to beat Recettear! A lot of fun, and the game has a lot of heart, but...so many years on from its release, the localisation is definitely dated. Though it brought me back to the 2000-2010 chat rooms I used to frequent, that's for sure. I never ended up finishing the last dungeon and recruiting Griff, I didn't need to, in the end.

header.jpg

20. Bayonetta (4/21/18 - 13hrs)

I had watched my friend stream most of Bayonetta, so, I went in knowing basically what to expect, but, it was still a lot of fun to actually play. I was genuinely surprised at the portable Switch performance, so, kudos to Platinum for that. I bought the pack, so, I have the second game to go through yet, and, I'm looking forward to it.

header.jpg

21. Majotori (5/1/18 - 2hrs)

This game was a dorky, short trivia game, where not knowing what year the Matrix was released in means that you could kill a little girl's mother. Well worth the like...$2 I spent on it for the laughs my friends and I had on it

bayonetta_2___icon_by_blagoicons-db6mwb6.png

22. Bayonetta 2 - (5/3/18 - 10hrs)

I had a shorter run time, but, Bayonetta 2 felt longer to me, and, that's not a bad thing. I had a lot of fun exploring maps and trying to find every nook I could, and combat wise, it genuinely felt like that even though our 'level' was 'rolled back to 1' since Bayonetta 1, the expanded range of skills and combos made it feel as though Bayonetta had just gotten stronger since we left her.

header.jpg

23. The Charming Empire - (5/14/18 - 10hrs)

I picked this up on Switch, I'd really love for it to reach the same niche the Vita did, where it was filled with JRPGs, Visual Novels, and niche Japanese games. I read this was the better of the otome games on Switch at the time of purchase, so, I picked it up. It was fairly middling, though, alas, and, I didn't really enjoy my time with it. I liked some of the ideas presented in the story, the background political intrigue and posturing, but, I didn't really like the romance side, or the protagonist's personality in most of the routes, which took me out.

24. Final Fantasy XIV - Under the Moonlight - (5/25/18 - 15hrs)

I remain FFXIV trash, and, while the plot went basically where I expected it to for the first chunk, it threw me for a loop in the final stinger sections, and, I'm looking forward to future patch installments. Lighthouse was a fun dungeon, and the primal was good fun to learn.

Total: 24 Games, 471hrs

First year I'm trying this. Probably won't get anywhere near 52 games but my backlog needs a lot of work so I'll give it an effort.

#1 - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune | PS4 | 6 hrs 38 mins | 01.06.2018 | 7.5/10

IN51KS7.jpg

Never had a PS3 so this is the first chance I had to play this game with the Uncharted Collection. Overall, it was pretty good if a little repetitive at times. Some of the shooting sections seemed to go on a little too long and I generally enjoyed the platforming and puzzles more than the endless wave of enemies coming at me. The beginning chapters were a little slow but the game really picked up at the end and came to a satisfying conclusion. I'm really looking forward to starting Uncharted 2 as I've heard nothing but rave reviews about the sequel.

#2 - Paper Mario Sticker Star | 3DS | ~ 25 hours | 02.09.2018| 5/10

kdjxMZb.jpg

This game has been in my backlog for several years now and I finally managed to finish it. One of the main reasons why, is that the game gets pretty tedious the further on you go. I think many people have already talked about how this game fucked up in several ways but the main one for me, is getting rid of the XP system and replacing it with stickers that are found throughout the various levels. What this does is destroy any motivation for engaging in random battles in order to level up your attacks. By only the second world, I was already finding myself trying to dodge my way through all the enemies in order to get the level done quickly. There's just no point and all you're doing is wasting stickers that could be used on enemies that matter. The other thing that I found annoying were many of the boss battles, due to the fact that most of them required a very specific sticker in order to beat. It just became a game of trial and error as there didn't seem to be any logic behind which sticker to use. The last boss battle against Bowser was particularly shitty because of this.

The game did still have that Paper Mario charm though, and there were some legitimately cool moments but overall it was a disappointing entry in the series for me.

#3 - Super Mario 3D World | Wii U | 43 hrs 44 mins | 02.20.2018 | 7.5/10

GU8hDnP.jpg

So this is another game that's been in my backlog for several years now. It was a great game to just pick up and play when the time allowed for it, but I finally decided to sit down and power through the last few worlds (including all of the extra worlds right up to Champion's Road). Overall, a pretty great Mario game with lots of variety in power-ups and levels. One complaint I do have to make though, is that I thought the game played it very safe compared to all the other 3D Mario games such as Galaxy and 64. I just felt kinda disappointed because to me this didn't feel like a full on 3D Mario, and was more like a hybrid of 3D and the 2D side-scrolling Mario games released previously on the system. There was no unifying hub world and I missed revisiting levels for multiple stars like in all the other games. Still though, it was a pretty great experience excluding one thing...Champion's Road. Fuck that level and I hope there's a special place in hell reserved for it. Over 5 hours of my final play time was devoted to that one shitty little level, and it might be the angriest I've ever been playing a video game. Everything about it is designed to take as many lives from you as possible and nothing about it was fun whatsoever. Just useless padding to keep you from finishing the game. Just skip the whole thing and give me a credits scene next time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#4 - Super Scribblenauts | DS | 10 hrs 15 mins | 03.23.2018 | 5/10

oAhqjnA.jpg

More games from my 5 year long backlog. Bought this one when I first bought my 3DS years ago just to give me something else to play along with Pokemon, but over the years it's taken a back seat to other games I was more interested in playing. Finally had a bit of free time on a recent holiday to sit down and finally finish this one. Overall it's an OK game, and for younger kids I can definitely see the appeal; for me however, it got pretty tedious pretty fast and was even frustrating at the higher levels due to very vague clues on what it wanted you to do and solutions that were completely nonsensical half the time (adjective levels can suck a dick). A decent enough time killer and for the 15 bucks or so I paid for it, the game was probably worth it but don't expect a very engaging experience here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#5 - Tomb Raider 1 | PC | 18 Hours | 05.12.2018 | 7/10

wfy4B0b.png

Having never played any games in the Tomb Raider series before, I wanted to start at the beginning and experience the evolution of the series over the years. Tomb Raider 1 is still a pretty good game in my opinion and I can imagine just how mind blowing it was back when it released in 1996. The environments are incredibly varied and cool for a game of it's time, and the plot is compelling enough to keep you interested. Sure the models and cut-scenes look like shit by today's standards but it's a pretty easy thing to get over. Unfortunately the other thing that hasn't aged well and isn't easy to get over is the controls. If you can't handle tank controls then this game is not for you. It can be incredibly stiff at times which presents a major problem in some of the platforming sections, especially in the later levels when doors and traps are timed. Personally I learned to put up with this as the game went on even though it was incredibly frustrating at some points, but I imagine for a lot of people this would drive them absolutely insane. Those people may want to look at Anniversary instead, although I haven't played that game yet so can't comment on problems it has. Overall, Tomb Raider 1 is a good game that definitely shows its age nowadays, but if you can get past the clunky controls and primitive graphics, there is still a ton to like here.

#6 - Half Life Opposing Force | PC | 7 Hours | 06.19.2018 | 7/10

ist7qZT.jpg

So I finished the first Half Life last summer and found it to be a pretty great game albeit with a few fairly big flaws. It's expansion, Opposing Force, unfortunately has these exact same flaws so it's disappointing nothing was improved upon here. The first problem is that there are several sections where the difficult spikes to an insane degree, placing you in rooms with no escape surrounded by way too many enemies, many of whom are complete bullet sponges that only serve to eat up your ammo. There were several points in the game that were just exhausting to play through, as I was constantly save scumming and searching every nook and cranny desperately for just one measly med pack. Another problem in this game, like the previous entry, is that the level design can get quite confusing at times and forces you to backtrack fairly often. This is made even worse in this game by the fact that in certain sections you have a squad that you must direct through the hallways and corridors in order to advance to the next section. I'll just say that the path-finding AI was still very primitive for it's time and these sections probably should have been skipped all together. By far the worst flaw however is the fucking platforming. My god has the platforming not aged well with these games at all. There is no weight to your character and you feel like you're floating on a pocket of air or sliding on ice pretty much the whole game. Sounds like the perfect physics system to include platforming doesn't it? I was almost driven to tears in the original Half Life due to platforming bullshit rearing its ugly head in the final boss fight. Thankfully, the final boss in this game is not nearly as hair pulling, but there are still several ugly sections that require death after death until you nail the jump just right.

Now to what I enjoyed. The combat in this game is still top notch and the tension is incredibly high. There are no slow moments in this game and no chance to breathe, it's an action packed thrill ride from start to finish. I'm not sure if this is one of the first games to do the multiple perspectives on an event thing (I know Resident Evil 2 did this a year earlier), but it does it well and you really feel like complete hell and chaos is happening around you through radio broadcasts and several in game cut-scenes. The game itself starts about one hour or so before the end of the original Half Life and greatly expands on the lore of the world, adding many new weapons and enemies to keep the experience fresh. Only real complaint about the story I can come up with is that I thought the build up to the final boss was quite weak. In the original you go through a ton of shit to finally get to the creature who opened the portal in the first place and it's built up as this huge powerful entity that isn't to be fucked with. In this game you just suddenly find yourself in an ammo supply room and are told "something big is coming". It felt pretty underwhelming.

Overall it was a pretty positive experience with the same flaws as the original game. I definitely enjoyed my time with it and look forward to the next expansion, Blue Shift, to finish out the trilogy
