I'll give it a shot. I feel like I've been spending too much time on multiplayer games and missing out on great single player experiences.

1. Katamari Re-roll - Somehow I've gone my whole life without playing the original Katamari. I really enjoyed it all of the main stages were really fun, though I wasn't the biggest fan of the constellation stages. I loved OST as well. I've had it on repeat ever since I finished the game.

2. Mario + Rabbids - I started this game a back when it launched but I never got around to finishing it. It's surpisingly good the gameplay is engaging and the characters are all very charming. I legitimetly laughed at some of the interactions they had. Also
the opera boss was great. Games suddenly breaking out in song is something I would love to see more often.

3. A Hat in Time / End: 1-20-2020 - A bit shorter than I expected but enjoyable all the way through. Platforming is solid, I really enjoyed the different hat abilites and I really enjoyed the characters, they're all so loveable. I was really surprised with how much I enjoyed the boss battles. None of them were especially hard but I could feel my heart pumping at the end of every boss fight. This is another game that had a great OST. I can see myself listening to it in the coming weeks.

4. Animal Crossing New Horizions 3/5 - As much as I love animal crossing this one felt a little content light to me. I'm sure that things will be added as time goes on but right now I feel like I'm done with it. My bigges complaint has to do with the animalas themselves. I feel like in previous iterations (especially the first one) talking with the animals was just interesting as everything else in the game. But now dialouge for the animals has been watered down so much I feel like I saw all every piece of dialouge within the first 2 weeks of release.

5. Final Fanasy VII Remake 5/5 - What a wonderful game. Definitely worth the wait and I'm super excited for the next installment. The standout elements for me were the characters and the soundtrack. Every character was lovable and I enjoyed all of the interactions between them. The dialouge was really well written and it wasn't stilted in a way that a lot of JRPG's can be. My favorite element is definitely the soundtrack though. EVERY song is incredible and OST's like this one are what inspire me to write better music.

6. The Liar Witch and the Blind Prince 3/5 - Cute, short game. Nice art style and soundtrack. I feel like if I paid anymore than $5 dollars for it though I'd feel like it wasn't worth it lol.

1. Mortal Kombat 11 - PS4 - 3/5

Normally I have a great time with these games despite being terrible. This time around I finished half the campaign and fell off not returning for an age before completing. I can't put my finger on it but this time around it didn't quite click with me.

2. Rocket League - PC - 5/5

My favourite game of all time. I reached my goal of achieving Champion rank in 3s at the end of last season so marking it as complete for this year.

3. Pokemon Shield - Switch - 4/5

This is the first Pokemon game I've completed since Pokemon R/B/Y. Once I got into it I couldn't put it down, that addictive bug of the previous titles hit me again. My team for the majority was Arcanine, Cloyster, Corviknight, Toxtricity, Boltund and Cinderace. The latter two I didn't really like/use but never got around to replacing until I caught the two Legendaries. Overall I had a great time with this.

4. League of Legends - PC - 4/5

A lockdown treat, as a group of my friends and I played LoL for the first time. Marking as complete as I reached level 30 and did my ranked placement games, enough of a target for this year. We're bad but it's fun and we even sometimes win.

5. Pyre - PC - 3/5

Interesting game with a fun premise, dragged on near the end but I wanted to play through to see the ending.

#3: Strider (1-4-2020) | 7/10 | Genesis Mini | ~ 2..5 Hours | Recommend: M
# Overall - 7| A game that is overly difficult but also has some awesome battles and gameplay
Gameplay - 8 | Good controls and fantastic sprites. Difficulty is very hard and hurt enjoyment of experience.
Sound - 8| Great soundtrack for a Ninja
Story/Online - 7| Early levels are really well done, latter levels seem to want to throw everything from all directions to keep killing you.
Asking Price- 7.33| I enjoyed the game, I bet if you mastered the game it would feel amazing but overall I wouldn't play again.

My wife and I registered for this. I have a large backlog from years of accumulating games. They lose their worth once they're installed! I'll slowly go through games on my list in hopes I can make a dent eventually. Several of the games I will have played with my wife "together", single player games we each had a copy of that we played at the same time.

#1: Abzu (beaten 1/4/2020) | Steam | 3/5 | 2.2 hours
This was a neat game. As I've gotten older I definitely need a little more structure to my games and this one was basically just swim around, so I struggled a little not knowing what I was supposed to be doing. The exploration was fairly linear and several times when I tried to swim where I wasn't supposed to, my character would turn around automatically and go back. Sometimes the controls and camera would wonk out and I'd get lost as to where I was. Still fun though!

Might this be the year i make it? lets see.

1. Tomb Raider 2013 (9h) - 4. marts
This game was okay but I felt like it has aged in a lot of ways, like how reliant the game is on quick-time events for a lot of things.

# Overall - | Fun game to play with friends that can offer great challenge and strategy for a group
Gameplay -7.6 | Fun levels that vary in height and openess. Checkpoints are far apart on some portions which can be frustrating
Sound -7 | Enemies are loud. Background has a generaly synth sound thats nice
Story/Online -8 | Each mission feels unique in both environments and enemies thrown at you. Variety of enemies could of been better
Asking Price-8 | I enjoyed it with friends, looking forward to next two portions

I didn't know much about this game before I started playing; I don't even remember how I got it. It has customization for your party (class, race, and character) that change your passive abilities. It was a fun option to make your roles how you envision them. The story is goofy, not to be taken seriously. The graphics are bright and beautiful. The music is nice, matches the game and mood.

It did become very repetitive. Go here, kill this mob. Go there, kill that mob. Get exp. Rest. It was enjoyable for the time I put into it. There's games I have played with less content. I didn't get every achievement either, so I could have put more time into it; however, the repetitiveness wore me out.

Another 2019 holdover game. I finished this charming little 3D platformer off this evening.

Today is Mario Superstar Baseball for the Gamecube (which I made a thread recently asking to get this or the Wii version). Game is pretty fun, didn't expect it to have a story mode where you recruit players and buy new bats!

Let's do this. I've already put in calendar appointments for adventure games from last year in my backlog. However, I've started with a straightforward and overlooked QTE game from the '90s. One of my favourites and an opportunity to check out the emulation in PCem.

1. Brain Dead 13 (PC, MS-DOS emulated on PCem) | 6th Jan - 1hr 25min | 4/5

I've failed horribly at these for the past two years. Maybe I should join anyway just to keep track of the games I finish. 😅

Typically, I lurk on this thread and get jealous; but this year I am all in. Focusing on older games but might toss in a few current ones to keep the count up.

GOLDEN YEAR: All 52 games were released in 2020.

As with every year, I add my own rule on top of the thread's limitations. A Golden Year means that only games released in 2020 count toward the 52 total games. I've only ever finished it in 2017. 2019 was maybe my worst year in a decade when it comes to total games played, largely due to me heavily getting into comics again, but here's hoping for a return to form in 2020.

Good luck everyone!

Last year was tight though I made it in the end. I guess this will be my go to post for this. I'll be surprised if I make it this year as one of my goals for 2020 is what I'm calling 20 in 20 where I'm going to try to knock 20 RPGs out of my backlog. Considering the length of many of these, that will be tough to do and still hit 52 games overall, but we'll see what happens.

Today game is Gradia for the PS1

I actually started this up last year, but I stopped due to a freezing issue I would get after 30 minutes. Dunno if it was the previous PS2 going bad or me using the faster load setting. Had no problems today so I will hope to finish it this time. Would kept playing it today but I have work soon so I need to stop.

Game #1. Mega Man 3 (Mega Man Legacy Collection on PS4)

picsart_01-05-10.15.58.png

I completed a replay of Mega Man 3 from the Mega Man Legacy Collection for the first time. I haven't played MM3 in ages (probably not since the Anniversary collection back on Gamecube), but it was a lot longer than I remembered. MM3 or MM4 was my first MM game, but all of the Blue Bomber's adventures blur together from my childhood, so it's hard to recall which one I played first. I replayed MM2 last year, but I couldn't tell you what was exactly different between the two games. It felt like the stages were shorter in length, but still designed competently and a lot more fair.

It helps that Rush Jet (which I think you unlock based on how many total robot masters you've defeated?) trivializes some of the trickier levels. I hardly remember the boss order in any MM game, either. What you think would work against one boss is rarely what's meant to be used. Outside of trial & error, I almost always end up using the trusty ol' Mega Buster in the older MM titles, unlike how I typically approach the MMX games. MM3 also has additional bosses beyond the traditional 8 robot masters. There are weird, cloned versions of MM1 and MM2 bosses, which honestly felt like an attempt at padding the game's overall length. The Wily Castle stages were a lot easier than I was expecting them to be, too.

Now that I've started to revisit these games as an adult, I've also found myself more engaged/interested in the Mega Man universe, the lore and its attempt at world-building. I love the fact that most of the robot masters were designed for industrial/commercial use. A lot of them have real-world applications, such as Cut Man being used as a means for deforestation or how Top Man is popular around New Year's because he can produce toy tops for children, but with each iteration (including MM3), some entries seem to have gotten away from that world-view. Like, what purpose does Snake Man serve? Or was he simply designed to target Mega Man?

I think I'm overthinking things, haha! At the end of the day, I enjoyed revisiting an important part of my childhood. It's a great way to start the new year with something short, yet familiar and comforting.

A point and click puzzle game that requires sleuthing...by clicking on EVERYTHING.

My pros: the constant eerie atmosphere. The sounds and mood made me on edge nearly the entire game. It felt like there was someone watching me. The sound design was excellent; background noises to make you unsettled. The graphics appear aged; not a "polished" game. But that adds to the moody environment. There are a few animated cutscenes, usually showing simple things like you driving your car to a new location. I did appreciate that the ending had a cutscene. The puzzles were challenging at times. You do have a notebook in the game and you will use it. A lot.

The negatives: The game is eerie and dark. But some locations were D A R K. To the point where I couldn't see a bloody thing. I was stuck and scummed to a guide for a clue I was missing - it was in a poorly lit room. A bummer, but a minor issue. The voice acting wasn't too bad, but sometimes it was lacking. Certain characters just didn't feel real because of the voice. Since you don't really see them, you rely on hearing them. The two main issues I had: lack of animation after something bad happens (read at your own risk in case you plan on playing) and the unreliable narrator.
Toward the middle of the game, you have to run to avoid getting caught. I ran into a room mistakenly and was "caught." There was NO animation for this. Just a black screen with white text saying "You were caught." So I reloaded and purposely stared at the door the bad guys were supposed to come out to see if I missed anything. Nope. Black screen. That's super disappointing. I'm not asking for a minute long animation or a jumpscare. Just something more imaginative than a black screen. It effectively ripped my fear away because I knew NOTHING would come out at me in the game. I didn't have that spooky feeling for the rest of the game because all that would happen to me was a blank screen.
I'm personally not a fan of main protags not being able to tell the truth in their story. Our protag here will sleep for days and have vivid nightmares. Was it real? Was it fake? Who knows? I'm not a fan of that narrative, so for me that's a negative. I beat the game not knowing...was he actually Howard? Was he involved? Maybe that's just me.

5: What Remains of Edith Finch. End: 1/5/2020. 2 Hours. Liked.

A very emotionally powerful game that never quite wears out its welcome. Glad I took the opportunity to play this.

Game #2 - Fate / EXTELLA The Umbral Star
Time: 40 hours

I'm a little torn on this one, as the first Musou game I've ever finished and I'm left very luke warm on it. I liked a lot of it, mainly the gameplay and the flashy anime skills, but the matrix meets anime harem story was shit and the whole stuff with the waifus is kinda creepy (especially the master / servant stuff). The gameplay is very fun, with fast paced combos and action, cool looking skills and characters, but it also suffers from a problem I'm noticing with Musous (noticed it in One Piece as well), if you like the character you are playing the game is great, but if you don't like a particular character and you are forced to use it, the whole experience drags down significantely. Add to that the fact that the story mode is way too long, and like I said, I'm left luke warm. Apparently the sequel is much shorter and more focused so I'm curious to play it, as I did like the gameplay in this quite a bit.

Week One Update:

1. Final Fantasy VIII - I remember not liking the game as a teen and bouncing off of it. Mainly due to the junction system. Now I'm glad I played the game and really loved the characters, specifically Squall and Rinoa. Some parts I wasn't to fond of and still not a fan of the junction system, but the journey was well worth it.

2. Pillars of Eternity - Really enjoyed this and now has me looking to see what other similar RPG's I can play. The companion characters were well written and had nuances to them. Loved the quests as well and the numerous ways you could tackle them.

6: Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. End: 1/5/2020. 5 Hours. Liked.

Jumping back into my copy of N. Sane Trilogy, it's the second Crash game. It's a lot like the first one, except it wasn't as hard as the first one in this collection and I didn't put it on hold for several years, lol.

Claiming my post! Rare poster, here. Very excited to do this. Will have to focus on short games unfortunately, but still, this should be a very fun challenge. Excited to follow all of your adventures!

#5: Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition (1-5-2020) | 9/10 | Switch| ~ 50 Hours | Recommend: Y
# Overall - 9| A fantastic game that sets you off on an adventure and doesn't hold your hand at all
Gameplay -8.8 | Combat and enemies are engaging, controls good for console but little weird at times.
Sound -9 | OST is very good, the amount of voiced characters is fantastic though
Story/Online -9 | Main story is decent, side quest though are phenominal. Also areas of world tell story of past. Good party stuff.
Asking Price-9.67 | So much content that you could entirely miss by not doing it. Game lets you do as much or little as you like.

Doing it again, last year was fun doing the challenge.

52 Games. 1 Year. 2019.

2016: 26 games
2017: 68 games
2018: 47 games
2019: 53 games
H80NP97.jpg

1- Monster hunter world – 40h- 4/5

Amazing monhun, a bit late to the party and waiting a few days until the expansion comes to PC.

2- Resident Evil 7.DLC's - 4h- 3/5

Chris "not a hero" and "End of Zoe" both are interesting DLC's and worth the money if you care about the story in the original game.

3- Total War: Warhammer II: The prophet & The Warlock -30h- 4/5

THE BEST DLC they added imo, game changing mechanics for skavens faction with a lot of new tools and a Super overpowered legendary lord to obliterate enemies with magic.

January 6th is game is Castlevania Harmony of Dissoance.

Had to take the picture on the Gameboy Micro because for some reason the OSSC is freaking out when I play the game and the character sprite flickers apart. I have no idea why it doing that. Anyway the game is pretty fun if overlooked entry due to being between the honestly prettier Circle of the Moon and the very excellent Aria of Sorrow.

Update 2!

Five games at a time seems to be a good amount. If I held this pace I would be done with the challenge in February but that won't happen. Half the games have been stuff I didn't manage to finish in 2019 so it looks faster than it is. I spent about 100h on Persona 3 (coming soon to an update post near you) and Dark Souls III last year!

6. Arrog (PC) | 3rd Jan - 0.5hrs | 2/5 | 100% Completion

Prior knowledge:
Absolutely none. Got it in a Humble bundle and thought the picture looked cool.

The positives:
The style! I really love how it looks. It's sad that this is the only thing I can put here. The tale it wants to tell might fit here too since it is fine.

The negatives:
The length has to be mentioned, mostly because I wish I could see more of this great art. The puzzles also goes here... they are not even puzzles to be honest. You just click around a little. The game doesn't do anything badly, it just doesn't do much at all.

Cv9FA7b.png

7. I Am Bread (PC) | 4th Jan - 12hrs | 3/5 | 100% Completion

Prior knowledge:
I had seen some videos of the first level or so. I knew what it was about and how it controlled. It's hard to miss the "meme games" like this.

The positives:
Most of the modes! I was surprised at how fun it was to play overall, but Bagel Race and Cheese Hunt were especially fun. The first is simple and fast while the other is the most tricky while still being enjoyable. Until I got how the speedrunning works and the tricks for it I had no idea how you would be able to get A++ on every level. It was really nice to figure that out by myself!

The negatives:
The physics are wonky by choice and I understand why, but it can still be very frustrating when something flings you away so that you get stuck in an object and have to restart a run that went well. Also, Zero-G sucks. It isn't fun in any way, just dumb. I learned how to steer pretty fast but it was still a pain to finish the levels. Never again.

BxExU8V.png

8. Gone Home (PC) | 5th Jan - 3hrs | 4/5 | 100% Completion

Prior knowledge:
I had completed the game with all journals many years ago, long before they added achievements.

The positives:
Most of the developer commentary was really fun to listen to. I loved to get confirmations about the references I understood and info about the ones I missed. It's interesting to play through a game like Gone Home when you know how it all goes, it is a very different experience. The story is still good, if a little less special now.

The negatives:
The floaty feeling when you walk isn't very pleasant and you can get stuck on corners and stuff which is annoying. The varying sound quality and volume of the dev commentary was jarring and one kind I skipped entirely because it wasn't fun to listen to due to how it was delivered.

CBJheZv.png

9. Dark Souls III (PC) | 5th Jan - 115hrs | 5/5 | 100% Completion

Prior knowledge:
I had gone completely spoiler free until I beat it once so I knew nothing about this game specifically. I just knew it was more Dark Souls.

The positives:
Pretty much everything and it has ended up being my favorite Soulsborne game. It has my favorite bosses, great areas, fun builds/spells/weapons and basically does everything I want it to. Surprising invaders with a combination of sorceries, pyromancies, miracles and my awesome "weapon skill" (that was basically a mad bullrush) was very fun. One of my overall favorite games for sure.

The negatives:
It has done most things right when it comes to QoL, but I would have liked to be able to level up at bonfires. All but one game in the series require you do go talk to a lady to level up and it's just so unnecessary. Oh, right, the covenant grinds for cheevos weren't exactly fun.

xgdXOrr.png

10. Minit (PC) | 6th Jan - 3hrs | 5/5 | 100% Completion

Prior knowledge:
Almost nothing. I knew it was something about only living for a minute at a time.

The positives:
Pretty much everything. It really succeeds at what it wants to be. I love the simple design, it sounds good and it's just the right length. The gameplay is very fun and I quickly understood what to do and how. The second run was a real challenge which I appreciated.

The negatives:
Can't think of any specifics. Loved the game.

I got away from completing many games last year but I'm hoping to have a much better 2020. Saving this past to start my list later.

So... this was fun! I was a little worried because a lot of people seemed to be underwhelmed by it, and admittedly it's much shorter than a typical fallout game (but not necessarily Obsidian imo). However, for the limited amount of time I have these days, I honestly appreciate the lack of bloat. I probably did at least 80% of the available sidequests and took both available main quest lines up to the point of no return. So while I definitely didn't do everything available in the game, I did a good chunk and it ended right when I wanted it too. The humor was spot on, there were touching stories like Parvati's companion questline, etc. It scratched the right itch, can't ask for much more than that.

1. Death Stranding - Dropped January 13th, was absolutely terrible at avoiding the BTs got frustrated and switched to The Outer Worlds. Not regretting it so far, was intrigued by the weird ass story of DS, but ultimately was not having fun at all with the moment to moment gameplay. Doubt I'll get back to it this year, but you never know. I understand why some people love it, but I don't think it's for me. Might just watch a playthrough of the story on Youtube tbh.

Note: I know the rules on what we count as a game are pretty loose per the OP. So my personal standards are pretty much going to be that episodic games only count as one game once I have played all episodes (FFVII Remake excluded, this applies more to Telltale style games that don't have much true "gameplay"), but "expansions" (read: story DLC no matter how long) to full games such as FFXV each count as their own game as they require me to go back to a game which takes skill to play and remember how to play it, etc. Maybe weird way to count things but it makes sense in my head haha.

# Overall - 8| Awesome new enemies, I wish classes were better. Customization was great, Enemy increased health was interesting. Really feels like warzone
Gameplay -8.2 | New enemies are awesome. Increased enemy health was interesting. Wish classes where better. Liked customization options
Sound - 7| A few really funny voice characters on how they pronounce words. Besides that everything is standard
Story/Online -7 | Played on hardest difficulty online. Story missions where decent, I tend to prefer mainlines setup but this was still enjoyable
Asking Price- 8.33| Good amount of content (52 missions) as well as variety in weapons and items

Work
Goal
Complete as many games as I can within the yea.

Why?
I got too many damn games.

Stats
11/52 Complete

What are you doing to help obtain your goal?
I have way too many games, and have a really bad time trying to get through them. To try and help out with getting through these, I'm also running a personal challenge of streaming 1,000 hours. Will I have any luck with either? Maybe! But, we'll see. I seem to be more focused when I stream.

Currently Playing
Yakuza 0, Turok 2, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010), Final Fantasy VII: Remake, DOOM Eternal. Final Fantasy Adventure, Half-Life: Alyx, Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005)

Other things to note
I'm working on a spreadsheet in Google Sheets to go over what games I've played and everything I want to play. This will expand well past the year that these 52 games will be completed in.

GAMES I HAVE COMPLETED THUS FAR

1st. Dark Souls 3 (Steam)
1/7/20 | TTC: Unsure | Rating 4.5/5

Hey wait that was pretty good no wonder people talk about these games all the time. I've beat Bloodborne, but this is my first actual Dark Souls game I've complete. I wanna go back and play the other ones now, and the DLCs to this one.

2nd. Control (EGS)
1/13/20 | TTC: Unsure | Rating 4/5

A really solid and fresh idea from the folks over at Remedy. A game that I was excited on purely for it's visual style that ended up being a decent ride, fun to play and incredibly gorgeous.

3rd. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (One)
3/1/20 | TTC: | Rating 4.5/5

It's all you really could have asked for out of a game like this. I have a bad habit of getting far into games and then not finishing them. This was one of them. Got to the last boss then never finished it until now. Great game all around.

4th. Code Vein (Steam)
3/4/20 | TTC: | Rating 3.5/5

A pretty compotent little Dark Souls inspired anime game. Hope they make a sequel because outside of a shitty bossfight and some stiff animation this was pretty good.

5th. Red Dead Redemption 2 (One)
3/5/20 | TTC: ? | Rating: 5/5

What a fucking video game.

6th. Donut County (Steam)
3/8/20 | TTC: 1ish hours | 3.5/5

Cute little game, almost like a reverse Katamari? Charming artstyle and a pretty bopping soundtrack.

7th. Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (Steam)
3/15/20 |TTC: 9 hours | 4.5/5

I sat on this one for a long time and now I'm not at all sure why. Excellent game with a couple of slightly infuriating point, but very minor over all.

8th. Turok (Steam)
3/29/20 | TTC: 6 hours | 4/5

Got this in a Humble Monthly. I've owned it on N64 for the longest time, but never played it. Decided to give it a shot and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Look forward to picking up the modern port of 2 soon!

9th. Pilot of Star Fetchers (Steam)
3/29/20 | TTC: 40 mins | 4/5

This is free on Steam. Just go check it out. Really neat presentation. Look forward to more.

10th. Final Fanatsy VII (Switch)
4/14/20 | TTC: 32 hours | 4/5

Was better than I was expecting and for the most part (outside of graphics) doesn't really show its age until the last couple of hours of the game. Pretty good!

11th. Streets of Rage 4 (PC)
5/1/20 | TTC: 1 Hours | 4.5/5

Obviously I'll beat this game more than once but playing through this with a bud was a pretty fucking great time. Played through it a couple more times on my own to unlock some stuff and want to go back and unlock the rest/play through on harder difficulties. Soundtrack BOPS.

12th. Helltaker (PC)
5/23/20 | TTC: 1 Hours | 4/5

Fun little puzzle game with cute demon girls. And it's free!

13th. Final Fantasy VII: Remake (PS4)
?/??/?? | TTC: 35 | 4/5

Pretty good game. Definetely more emoitional, I think, than the OG was. Something I want to go back and play again to get the plat trophy for, or when it comes out on PC (surely, right?) to look at it again. I don't remember the exact the date I beat this though. Oops.

14th. Dusk (PC)
8/17/20 | TTC: ??? | 5/5

Do games without a clear end count? I feel like I'm gaming the system by writing down Viva Piñata, and it's not like I was ever going to 100% it but I'm trying to beat my personal mark when I was a kid (I believe I got to level 22...?)
