5G may set back weather forcasting by decades

Experts are warning that the development of 5G technology could interfere with weather forecasting. The acting head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Neil Jacobs, testified on Capitol Hill last week that potential interference from 5G wireless radios could reduce forecasting accuracy by as much as 30%, CNET reports.

In March, the Federal Communications Commission started auctioning off the 24 GHz spectrum to wireless carriers for use in 5G networks, which would eventually enable far faster wireless internet. But as CBS News weather producer David Parkinson explained on CBSN, that's close to the 23.8 GHz spectrum forecasters rely on to look at water vapor in the atmosphere.

"The concern is that if you miss one of the water vapor signals at seven days out, you might not see that a hurricane is intensifying. You might not see that there are certain things going on in the atmosphere that are going to steer a storm in one particular direction," Parkinson said.

When were weather forecasts ever accurate to begin with? :P

Seriously, though, this is something that obviously needs to be looked more into, if true.

Profit is all.

Also, how come this is the first time we are hearing about this? Shouldn't the frequency been made known to relevant agencies, globally in the past?

all we got to do is ask the nearest old person if their knees os back hurt and we'll know if we're in for some precipitation.

Not worth it, more research is needed. 4g is plenty fast enough. Can't we just work on better coverage for that instead?

Uhhhhhh this really sounds like something that should have been brought up years, if not decades ago. With the spectrum already handed over I don't see what can be done to change the technology now.

Experts have all been warning about 5g. From animal migration to health effects. There have been hearings which are all damning. And all from experts. When i say experts, i mean the ones not getting paid off.

All of this hax been a concern for years. Cnn doesnt cover it though so no one knows.

Stop with the psuedoscience, let's focus on the real dangers. Or do I have to explain the difference between non-ionizing and ionizing radiation?

Don't worry, in 15 years America will ask itself how did this happen, it'll be the top story for days after some massive storm fucks a city up and it came with little warning, the country will then decide that it would be too costly to rectify the mistake and move on

Maybe I'm ignorant, but 4G already seems insanely fast already. I'd imagine 5G is for other things besides speed because I don't see why we need much more but seeing as how we are going to be streaming games and 4k video on the go...

I guess it's my fault for being an ignoramus. Generally I get most of my news from google newsstand and this is the first time I have seen this risk aspect.

Weather forecasting is far more important these days because of climate change. Although I doubt corporations will really care.

Are they broadcasting 5G off the coast of Africa? 'Cause that's where hurricanes form. And if they can blast weather radar at 23.8mhz it doesn't seem like 24mhz would affect anything else not already affected.

If there's one thing we're good at it, it's ignoring scientists' warnings about weather.

I mean I can look at the sky if I need to. But I won't because I'll be streaming 8K video.

That’s not how things work. Signals fade in intensity the further from the center frequency but you can’t fully attenuate them to zero. Satellites watch the earth’s 23.8GHz emissions to track the water vapor and the signals they’re trying to pick up are really faint. Noise from 5G will show up when sideband noise is strong enough to overwhelm the very quiet 23.8GHz emissions and show up as false positives on the radar.

More like "5G interferes with their ability to control the weather with HAARP". I ain't buying it!

Some people still got the nerve to get upset when you don't have any optimism for the future. Fuck am I supposed to do about this.

tbh I don't pay attention to forecasts so I'm fine with this.

Sucks for those who live in hurricane lands tho.
