8 killed in shootings, the majority of them Asian women, at 3 Atlanta-area spas (UP: Suspect caught)

I had a bad day when I lost all coordination due to Covid; I haven't gone out on a shooting rampage. Barely being able to stand up aside.

What a shitty ass flimsy excuse. The fact that he targeted Asian hotspots versus just going after women in general shows his motive.

Scary and heart-breaking. Believe it or not, many Americans are still in denial about racism and the rise of anti-Asian-American racism since COVID

This happens every time America and its media designates a country as the enemy, it fuels reactionary violence at home towards its diaspora.
As the USA continues to fall towards being a failed state, and as China continues to surpass it, anti-Asian racism and anti-Asian attacks are only going to get worse.

So many White people can't handle the thought of Asians, or any POC, surpassing them. At best, they will dismiss, or handwave away our achievements (there's a White Guy in the Canada COVID thread who brushed off how well Asian countries have handled this pandemic with "they all wear masks due to the pollution there, as if Japan is polluted!), at worst, they attack and kill us.

And the sad reality is that it's not just White People doing that to us, but Era has repeatedly shown that very few here are ready to have that conversation. Fuck! One poster even copped a permaban when they called it out!

Thanks that’s the one I saw. Who the fuck made it then and why? Jesus
Groups like the Boogaloo Boys are interested in stoking tension to get a second civil war. It also benefits Foreign States to keep Americans divided. Basically doesn't hurt to wait a few days to get all the facts.

After 9/11, my friend's mom came to talk to our class, because they were Muslim and the media was going insane about Islam and she and the school were genuinely concerned about safety.

You're not even right about the context. He didn't say the suspect said this he said our investigators talked to him and this is what they found. So framing it as the police position not the killer's position.
You're literally wrong here. Please go listen to the interview. The answer starts with "I spoke to investigators and they spoke to him this morning....".

Funny how only one kind of person gets that treatment - to be heard by investigators and have any bullshit excuse be repeated to the public.

Who else gets to tell their side of the story?

Oh right, no one, because they're either fucking murdered already or silenced.

Such fucking bull.

It feels to me very much like after 9/11 (and the lead-up to the Iraq war).
Then like now, the mainstream media was doing their respectable racism schtick while totally ignoring how the right wing media pretty much agitate for progroms in the open.

is there any reason the thread title hasn’t been changed yet to clearly reflect that this was a targeted hate crime and that ‘asian women’ didn’t just happen to be there

Someone can be an incel and be a racist asshole. In fact, if someone is an incel they are almost guaranteed to be a racist prick as well.
Yeah, exactly. Media is leaning into his "sex addiction," but it justifies nothing. Committing murder because of misogyny is still a hate crime. Moreover, this is doubly insulting because of its implicit fetishizing of Asian women (because if your mind immediately jumps to sex when you think of Asian women, fuck you).

There's actually a post much earlier in the thread that bothers me a lot, where someone just posits that these women might be human trafficking victims, and it's the same thing.

You're absolutely right.

There's something especially insidious about the "Not a hate crime but sex addiction" framing here.

‘A Temptation for Him that He Wanted to Eliminate’: Atlanta Area Law Enforcement Say Massage Parlor Massacre Suspect Claims to Have a ‘Sex Addiction’

Police said that Long, rather than being motivated by race, may have viewed these massage parlors as sexual temptations for him that he wanted to “eliminate” (Long made a point in the past to discuss his baptism and Christianity online).
Sheriff Frank Reynolds said that during an initial interview “indicators” suggested Long “has some issues, possibly sexual addiction.” The sheriff himself added that the suspect “may have frequented these places in the past.”

But a sheriff’s department spokesperson later clarified that it is currently “unknown” whether he previously patronized the two specific locations that were targeted.
“We are not going to start blaming victims,” she said—adding that as far as she and city officials knew, the massage parlors attacked on Tuesday were legitimate businesses. The mayor noted that the two locations in question had never been the subject of community complaints or any sort of law enforcement suspicion.

What's the difference between what you quoted and how I characterized it? He didn't say it was a quote from the killer, he said he talked to his investigators after they talked to the killer. So what he was relaying was what his investigators said, not the killer.

The distinction on Era has been China vs CCP. The latter is a monstrous entity and the issue becomes when Western media be they R-Wing or with deep reach conflate the ethnicity with action of the current regime even in the remotest ways possible. After all, the televising a racist degenerate vile scum and his degenerate cohorts labelling and doubling down on calling COVID19, "China virus" has far reaching consequences in a country that has not dealt kindly with people who do not look like European colonizers, forever, the "others"/"them" via the institutions of education, banking, medicine and politics.

There is no place for racism (and other bigotries) here and yet valid criticism of quasi/neo fascist/fascist adjacent governments that wield enormous socio-economic and geopolitical influence (CCP, BJP, etc) can be had (and have been had) here.

Anyway, right now, the language and tone used by the Sheriff is really illuminating. There was a momentary slip of tongue in the full clip, where he was going to say, "I got (the impression)" and the interpretative work done that almost sounds like it would befit the argument of his defense attorney is rather infuriating.

It will be interesting to see whether the investigation will push hard to find out his real motivation and whether it will meets the threshold for one of the established definitions of terrorism.

There's something especially insidious about the "Not a hate crime but sex addiction" framing here.
It demonizes the occupation first, and by extent the Asian and Pacific Islander community, before placing 100% of the blame on the killer. Noting but excuses to not face the uncomfortable truth that white supremacy is a real threat, and that the police are tied to it. It is insidious.

Yeah pretty much all the same defenses used by the white supremist was used by Era members and mods just a few weeks ago and when people called it out they got banned.

They're painting him as a sex addict? What a way to try to humanize the murderer instead of talking about his victims or his crimes.

And he "had a bad day?" Holy shit. There are no words.

Yup. A lot of racist and sexist ideologies seem to hide behind the same bullshit statistics and pseudoscience so that they can pull the "I'm just being ~logical~" card when trying to justify their shitty views. They all use similar roots to justify their sense of superiority.

The problem here is that you're already having to qualify the horrible racism going around the world with "well, the CCP is evil, but..." It doesn't actually help the conversation, and you're greatly mistaken if you think discussion on ERA successfully delineates between Chinese people and their government. So many threads based on kneejerk headlines and news immediately turn into "fuck the CCP" when China or Chinese people are involved, only for it to turn out there's no connection.

There is undeniably a culture on ERA and other liberal circles where people feel they must always bring up tenuous at best connections to the CCP to criticize them. It's essentially Cold War 2.0. If it's like that here, it's way worse in right-wing circles. And those people don't care about the victims of the CCP, you can bet on that.

Absolutely. I remember that there were folks who questioned whether or not I was really Asian when I criticized Biden's xenophobic campaign ad. Or the pushback I got when I told people to tamp down on the voyeurism with the Hong Kong protest threads.

You folks want change? You don't need to write a congressperson or even call out racism or whatever. Not yet, anyway. First, look in a fucking mirror. The racism is in the politicians you love INCLUDING the Dems and the newspapers you read INCLUDING darlings like the NYT and WaPo. Fucking shut up and LISTEN. WE saw this coming a mile away. YOU are part of the problem that made these racists comfortable enough to act on their hate.
This so fucking much.

It's annoying the mayor explicitly states the businesses were legitimate and a Sheriff fumbles it to insinuate these murders was some act of sanctimonious religious cleansing of sexual deviancy. It stigmatizes all Asian owned massage businesses to patrons.

I actually made a big post about this, but deleted it, but yeah. Wasnt the Galapagos thread closed because it was "Wow. Fuck China" and then it turned out lots of different vessels from other countries were also fishing there but somehow articles focused on China?

Anyway RIP to the victims and fuck those fucking piece of shit racists.

NGL, I have not been on here too frequently and so I have generally come across "Fuck the CCP" statements (which I have written as well) in threads pertaining to the Uyghur issue. I appreciate you filling the gaps in my knowledge. Btw, you are not wrong about it being a cold war 2.0.

So regarding that Sheriff with his ‘bad day’ hot-take.

I'm tired of seeing these bastards walk.
As morbid as it sounds, I'd rather see these bastards hang. I've had enough of these white supremacist, racist ass pieces of shit. If there was any way to just make them disappear, my patience for change has worn thin, make it happen. What hurts is so many of these fucks get away with this shit, get treated with kid gloves, get released, get to live life, grown old, grow fat and die happy with loving family members surrounding them, all the while PoC get stomped down, snuffed out, forced to live in poverty, wondering where their next job and meal's gonna come from. Fuck this situation, it's gross and literally turning my stomach.

Just some things I noticed:

In a thread a few weeks ago someone got banned because he vehemently said that Chinese citizens are also to blame for what happens in Xinjiang.
When Covid started there were lots of "Bat jokes" here, because Chinese "eat everything".
A thread about how China is racist against Black Panther which sourced 4 quotes from Douban (like IMDB).
During the trade wars there were several members "Good" and even after pointing out it might hurt farmers in China or factory workers, it was met with stuff like "I dont really care".
There was a thread about fishing near the Galapagos island that was mostly about "Fuck China" and then later someone pointed out not just China but several different nations fished there.
Heck. Even on Gaming side check out the Minmin Smash Bros thread when that was announced.
Along with "Okay. Im just asking questions but why cant we say "Fuck China" (which are mostly just these two words when a mod had a sticky thread here how it can add to sinophobia.
